Woman awakens to find home invader ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta police are looking for a suspect connected to a Sept. 30 burglary of a house on Broadwell Oaks Drive.

That night, a woman sleeping in the basement bedroom woke up and spotted a shadowy figure at the bedroom door.

When the suspect saw that the woman was awake, he or she bolted.

The woman attempted to follow and saw that the backyard doors were wide open. She then called police.

Officers found recent footprints in the dew of the grass but did not see any signs of forced entry.

Some bourbon and a makeup bag were missing.

No description of the suspect was provided to police.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta police arrested a woman suspected of stealing $800 worth of cloths from the Von Maur at North Point Parkway on Oct. 3.

Police arrived at 2:30 p.m. and met with loss prevention officers who already had taken the woman into custody.

When police called the suspect’s phone number, the line had been disconnected.

Woman alerted to fraud involving store purchase ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A person recently used an Alpharetta woman’s personal information to open at least two fraudulent accounts in Florida.

The woman told police she received a call Oct. 3 from an Ulta Beauty store in Destin, Florida about a purchase they said she had made. But the woman had not made any recent purchases and had not been in Florida.

Further inquiry revealed that someone opened a credit account using her name, license number, Social Security number, home address and phone number.

When the woman checked her credit report, she also found that someone had recently opened a Big Lots credit card account in Florida using her information.

The woman told police she did not know how her information had been compromised.

Man robbed at gunpoint over opioid pain medication JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek police are looking for three men suspected

of robbing a man at gunpoint Oct. 6.

The victim told police he was walking at 9:30 p.m. on Jones Bridge Road, near the Publix, when three men started following and harassing him.

The suspects said they could hear a pill bottle rattling in the man’s pocket.

At one point, one pulled out a gun and demanded the pills.

The man said he pleaded with the suspects, who said they sympathized with him and took 15 of the 20 pills.

The pills were Percocet, which contains an opioid pain reliever and is a high addiction risk.

The man said he originally went to the Publix to cash a $50 money order but could not provide the receipt from the transaction.

$10,000 worth of products stolen from closing business JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek police are looking for a suspect they say recently stole $10,000 of product from a closing business.

The owner of Bikes and Life closed the store Sept. 24. Three days earlier, he notified employees about the decision and received a notice from the store manager announcing her resignation.

Later, the owner discovered that $10,000 worth of product was missing from the inventory and had been shipped to a warehouse out of state.

The missing items include several bicycles, sunglasses and watches.

The transaction records used the previous store manager’s identification.

The owner said the woman had keys to the location as well as access to the company’s database.

City increases pay for Roswell police officers

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell police will soon get a helping hand in their recruitment efforts.

The Roswell City Council voted unanimously Oct. 8 to increase pay grades and pay of sworn officers. The decision follows a review this summer that shows the city’s pay grade is about 13-21 percent lower than the average paygrade of neighboring cities’ police departments.

“Intense competition for talented police officers” from nearby cities has caused some trouble for the Roswell Police Department’s efforts to hire and retain officers, said Human Resources Director Jim Harner.

The city currently employs almost 160 sworn officers and has 21 openings, not including command staff.

City Councilman Matthew Tyser called these numbers “fairly significant.”

“Right now, we’re looking at what could be a looming public safety crisis,” Tyser said. “I’m pleased to see us get ahead of this and be able to recruit and retain.”

During the vote, Harner also urged the council to change the pay of current officers in order to avoid pay compression.

To avoid pay compression, Harner advised increasing the pay to 10 percent for current officers, a move that would cost the city $690,000.

Staff proposed paying for the increase by defunding nine officer positions, a move that would effectively bring the net impact to the budget to zero.

Earlier this summer, several controversial incidents involving Roswell police surfaced, prompting public outrage and an ongoing investigation into the department by an independent consulting firm. At least two officers have been fired since videos of the incidents came to light.

Palermo said he had no problem with the timing.

“When looking at neighboring municipalities, we are not aligned with the right pay,” he said. “If anything, by better aligning with the pay and increasing it, it’s going to give us the ability to have greater accountability and help ensure that we move from having 99 percent of the best to 100 percent of the best. I think this will be a tool to help empower us and empower our police leadership.”

Mayor Lori Henry agreed.

“You all don’t have a bigger fan than me,” Henry said addressing police. “I’m so excited that we are treating our police officers in the manner that they should be treated and be compensated in the manner they should be compensated.”

Before the vote, Henry added that next year, the city will study all staff to make necessary adjustments to pay.

NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Early voting for the Nov. 6 general and special midterm elections has begun. And this year, there will be several outreach sites open for select days during the early voting period.

Early voting will start Monday, Oct. 15 and run through Friday, Oct. 26, with weekend voting held Oct. 2021 and Oct. 27-28.

Voters unable to vote early or make it to their polling place on Election Day can vote using an absentee ballot. Those eligible include college students, those with physical disabilities, members of the military and people whose work or vacation takes them out of town.

Requests for an absentee ballot must be made by Nov. 2 and turned in by 7 p.m. on Nov. 6.

Absentee ballots can be requested at sos.ga.gov or at fultoncountyga. gov. A valid Georgia Drivers’ license number is required for verification.

Alpharetta moves to guard itself from utility legislation

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta is making a pre-emptive strike to buffer itself against legislation that could open it up to unwanted telecommunications equipment.

But even the city isn’t ready to pull the trigger.

At a special meeting held at noon on Friday, the Alpharetta Planning Commission tabled action on proposed changes to its Unified Development Code that would give the city some authority to control standards for placement of utility poles and equipment cabinets on city-owned right of way. The code change would set limits on the height, proximity and appearance of equipment carriers can place within the public right of way.

Planners, however, said the drafted changes were incomplete, and they never received a full copy of the proposed changes during a presentation from acting City Attorney Scott Hastey.

Members said they would not vote on any changes to the code without sufficient time to study them.

Hastey admitted that revising the city code is complex because it must address new federal laws just handed down in

The city’s move to revise the code comes six months after a bill sailed through both chambers of the Georgia Legislature to allow utility companies unimpeded access to place poles and cell towers in public rights of way. The measure failed to come up for a final vote before the session ended in April.

Johns Creek and Milton had all passed resolutions opposing the legislation arguing municipalities should have control over the aesthetics of its property.

Backers of the legislation say it helps open telecommunication options throughout the state, particularly in rural areas that are currently underserved.

Indeed, representatives from the industry spoke to Planning Commission members Friday saying they want to help craft a policy that could benefit

both the city and the carriers.

Ellen Smith, an attorney representing Crown Castle, America’s largest provider of shared communications infrastructure, said the city’s current code doesn’t even allow providers to co-locate on traffic signals. She said collaborating to find reasonable solutions to aesthetic concerns could benefit everyone.

“You’re not encouraging the thing you want to encourage,” Smith said.

The next meeting of the Planning Commission is scheduled for Nov. 1.

Alpharetta’s quest to address the telecom industry is designed to give the city protection in case the legislation is revived at the Capitol this January, said City Councilman Ben Burnett, who serves as liaison to the Information and Technology Department.

“Local control is absolutely everything to a city like Alpharetta,” Burnett said. “It matters a great deal what downtown looks like. It matters what North Point Parkway looks like. ALPHARETTA, Ga. — City leaders have committed another $2 million to major capital projects this year, dropping most of it in resurfacing work on Alpharetta streets.

The action comes three months after the city formally adopted its budget for the fiscal year, which runs from July through June. City officials decided to wait till now to begin allocating some of the nearly $5 million it had set aside for capital projects because of uncertainty in anticipated revenues.

They needn’t have worried, though, because revenues from property taxes are expected to come in stronger than anticipated, thanks in part to an increase of 14 percent in property values.

Mayor Jim Gilvin said another reason for the delay was that the City Council had at least two new members seated in May who had not had the opportunity to absorb the budget process from its beginning.

The list of new capital projects includes $1 million for milling and resurfacing of neighborhood streets. Council members had argued that one of the

best ways to pay back taxpayers for a higher tax bill this year due to higher valuation would be to improve residential streets. The approved capital budget passed in June already includes $2.5 million for this work.

The extra street work comes as the city is already in the first two years of a massive spending plan that will pour close to $100 million of local money into streets, sidewalks and pathways.

More than half that local money, about $63 million, comes from the city’s share from a countywide transportation sales tax passed in 2016. The remainder, about $26 million, is part of a $52 million bond Alpharetta voters approved two years ago.

The updated capital spending budget for this year also includes $60,000 for conceptual design work on widening Wills Road south of Milton Avenue to Old Milton Parkway. Councilman John Hipes had commented in August that the city needs to take the lead in opening pathways for student traffic when the new STEM school begins classes in the fall of 2020.

Wills Road, he said, could provide an alternate route for buses that might

otherwise travel through downtown.

Other initiatives approved for capital funding include: • $250,000 for Buice Road traffic calming. Earlier this month, the city signed an agreement with the City of Johns Creek to share costs of traffic calming measures, such as roundabouts, along the route between Kimball Bridge and Jones Bridge roads.

Although the road itself falls under the jurisdiction of Johns Creek, providing access to its Ocee Park, residents on either side of the street are Alpharetta citizens.

• $80,000 for additional lighting and security for the City Center Parking Deck. The facility has seen some share of cars vandalized in recent months, and its use is only growing with the opening of new shops, restaurants and residential units in the downtown.

• $50,000 for design of a downtown centralized waste and recycling facility.

The current waste facility is no longer adequate to accommodate its growing use by surrounding businesses.

• $600,000 for design and construction of new park spaces.

Public safety officers share Halloween safety tips

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — As Halloween approaches, public safety officers aim to educate the public about how to stay safe during the holiday.

“My goal is just getting people to slow down and be careful,” said Officer Madhusudana Meberg with the Johns Creek Police Department.

The department recommends trickor-treating before dark if possible. If after dark, families should bring a flashlight and walk facing the traffic. Wearing reflective tape is an extra precaution parents can take.

As always, pedestrians should look both ways before crossing the street and use sidewalks whenever possible. Police recommend not crossing over lawns because they may have unseen objects or uneven ground that can cause someone to trip and fall.

Trick-or-treaters should only go up to houses that have a light on, preferably only homes where they know someone. Police recommend never going into strangers’ homes, instead let them bring the treats to the door.

Parents can inspect their children’s candy to ensure everything is factory

wrapped. Avoid homemade treats unless you know the person well.

If a child is old enough to go out without their family, parents should discuss their route and a set a firm time to expect them to return home.

Drivers should be extra careful on Halloween.

Not only should they be wary of the children walking around, but drunk driving incidents often increase on the holiday, according to the National High-

way Traffic Safety Administration.

Fire departments have their own recommendations.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends using battery-operated candles or glow sticks in jack-o-lanterns.

If families use candles, they should teach children to stay away from open flames.

People should also be conscious of fire risks as they decorate and pick out their costume.

Police and fire departments recommend wearing costumes that fit and not wear clothes with long trailing fabric.

Face paint is preferable to masks, but if your costume must include a mask, make sure you can see, hear and breathe easily.

All exists should be clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.

Decorations like dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper catch fire easily and should be kept away from open flames, light bulbs, heaters and stoves.

From 2011-2015, decorations placed too close to heat sources started an average of 840 home fires per year, according to NFPA. These fires caused an average of 2 deaths, 36 injuries and $11.4 million in direct property damage per year.

Feral children, raised by books “Libraries are not child-care facilities, but sometimes feral children raise themselves among the stacks.”

That’s from one of my all-time favorite, if not outright Julia Grochowski favorite, authors: Neil Gaiman. You Reporter julia@appenmediagroup.com might know him from works like “Coraline,” “American Gods,” or, my favorite, “Good Omens,” which was co-authored with the late Terry Pratchett.

It’s not hard to figure out that I love books and reading. Like Gaiman, I have several fond memories of heading down to my local library after school or on a weekend, where I was determined, as a kid, to read every book in the young adults section. (Unsurprisingly, I never reached that goal, but I like to think I made a nice dent.)

Libraries are, undoubtedly, one of the best ways find books and information.

And, as you probably are already aware, many libraries are in danger of shrinking or disappearing altogether.

Just as several chain bookstores – like Chapter 11 and Borders, to name a few – have gone the way of Blockbuster: discussed now only to talk about how old you are, that you can still remember going into their stores.

Experiencing these closures in real time definitely hurt. But none hit so close to home as when the Roswell Bookmiser pulled up stakes, after decades of selling used books.

It almost sounds silly to get emotional about a store closing. But used bookstores, like libraries, offer so much more than just selling a product.

They’re often gathering spaces for book clubs, authors and fans, and one of the best places to go to get a personal book recommendation. There’s no rush to get in and out. They’re warm, inviting spaces that encourage you to take all the time you need to find that one, perfect book for you, no matter what stage of life you’re in.

And, unlike new bookstores, used bookstores carry books that aren’t just the most popular or successful books, the names you’ve heard a million times over.

I’ve found some real gems among the teetering stacks of Bookmiser that I would have never found otherwise in person or online, if only because I had no idea they existed. I can’t tell you how many favorite authors or new series I picked up this way.

But now, ironically, with the internet and so many bookstore closures, it’s become harder and harder for me to

Yes, the classics and bestsellers will always be there. And don’t get me wrong – I love ebooks and how portable they are.

I’ve heard many times that smell is the sense most closely associated with memory. If you ever doubt that, just walk into any bookstore and take a whiff.

I will leave you with this.

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to visit Warsaw, Poland for a month. One of the oddest things about it that stuck with me the most was how easily accessible books of all types, old and new, were.

It is a culture in love with reading, and it shows, with every book store found on almost every block corner.

There were even traveling book cart shops – something I’ve never seen in person before – at almost every train and metro stop.

Can you even begin to imagine something like that here?

Roswell Council to discuss solar energy campaign

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell City Council will soon vote on a new green initiative for citizens and businesses.

During its regular Administration, Finance and Recreation and Parks Committee meeting Oct. 9, members of the City Council unanimously approved the Solarize Roswell Campaign for discussion at an upcoming council meeting.

The campaign, led by Solar Crowdsource, would help inform citizens on how to solarize their homes and businesses in Roswell. The goals of the campaign are to ramp up adoption of solar energy throughout Roswell and educate people on the benefits of clean energy sources.

Through the initiative, the company would organize bulk purchases of renewable energy technologies to provide a discount. Those who participate will work closely with professional installers to determine what solutions work best for their house or business.

Because the campaign relies on bulk purchasing, more participation means greater savings.

Prices and materials would be determined up front.

Solar Crowdsource has led similar campaigns in Athens, Dunwoody and Decatur-DeKalb, saving residents an average of 20-25 percent by signing up for the initiative.

Over half of residential solar installations in the state have come from Solar Crowdsource campaigns.

The initiative would come at no cost to the city. All tools, support and experience would be provided by the organization.

Solar Crowdsource highlighted several possible benefits of solar power, including lower electricity bills, no harmful emissions or pollutants, and tax incentives. As an added bonus, solar power comes with more predictable electricity costs that don’t fluctuate as much as other utility rates.

Councilwoman Marie Willsey said she was excited about the program and would be happy to see such options available for citizens.

The item will be discussed and voted on at a future City Council meeting.

Real world stress of life off the trail The last few months have been, let’s say, interesting.

I got back from my hike on the John Muir Trail at the end of August. It was a good, albeit really hard, hike, about 200 miles and almost Ray appen a month long. I doubt Publisher ray@appenmediagroup.com I will ever underestimate again the impact that elevation has when one is trying to walk, hike, climb or just move.

It’s a whole different ballgame.

When I got back — just like when I returned from my Appalachian Trail hike — I figured I would just jump right back into reality. In both cases that was how it went — for a very short while. Then, reality’s smiling face gave me a quick poke in the ribs, reminding me that, yep, life on the trail is way different from life off it.

On the John Muir, I was without cell service most of the time.

That trail is remote.

Almost every night initially I had panic attacks — something that I have never had in my life — thinking about “what if.” On that trail if something happens you are almost always roughly 15 to 25 miles away from a paved road or anything resembling civilization. And those 15-20 miles are hard miles. No phone calls for help. No ambulances coming to get you. No law. Just you, the other hikers and unforgiving mountains.

About two weeks after returning to Alpharetta, I realized something was different, something subtle. Then it dawned on me; I felt unhealthy.

I could feel it in how I moved. I could smell it when I sweated — it was different. And I could feel the difference from one day to the next. Each day I felt incrementally less well. Once I realized what this feeling was I started thinking about it.

Part of the cause was not rocket science. I was not eating healthy back home. On the trail my nourishment was basic, but it was consistent and it was

healthy — lots of water, protein and fiber meal replacement, lots of peanut butter, nuts, and raisins — no sugar, no processed food, no ice cream, no sodas, no fast food. On the trail I stayed hungry but it was a healthy hungry and my body felt like it was burning all the calories it had access to and leaving an empty but healthy engine waiting for more fuel.

The second issue I instantly recognized was that I was not exercising, again — just like after I returned from the AT. I didn’t exercise for about two years after completing the AT. Why? Mostly because of a general weakness of internal fortitude and character combined with hikers “post-trail depression” — something I think is very real and that most long distance hikers experience.

Neither reason was an acceptable excuse to me. I have always believed that we are in charge with how our lives go — at least most of the time.

The third culprit that was sinking my post-trail life I realized was a six letter word — “stress” — largely self-induced.

Of the three, I believe the last one is by far the most debilitating, and it is linked to and to a degree regulated by how one manages the first two — nutrition and exercise.

Stress is possibly the most toxic disease human beings face. I am sure that it is directly linked to most if not all of the big killers — heart disease, cancer, diabetes and more. The stress I felt off the trail, now in hindsight, I realize was multiple times greater than how I felt out there hiking. The difference in stress was like a hard slap in the face with an ice-cold towel.

Life on the trail for any length of time removes one from almost everything that constitutes “modern life” and “civilization.” Your day goes from driving in traffic, answering and making phone calls, catching news reports about how our lives and values are imploding and how limited our power is to do any-

3 Fulton Schools land on Blue Ribbon list Lake Windward, Shakerag elementary earn 2018 honors NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Three elementary schools in the Fulton County School System were named 2018 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education — the most ever named in the same year in Fulton’s history.

Lake Windward and Shakerag elementary schools in Johns Creek, along with Heards Ferry elementary in Sandy Springs, are three of 349 public and private schools across the nation to earn the distinction this year.

“This honor affirms the hard work of our teachers, staff, students and parents, all of whom deserve credit for motivating and encouraging students to perform at their highest level,” said Fulton Superintendent Jeff Rose.

All three Fulton schools were recognized in the “Exemplary High Performing” category, placing them among Georgia’s highest performing schools based on state assessments or nationally normed tests.

Period. Nothing more. Nothing.

While this probably sounds defeatist, I maintain I have always seen the glass half full. I will always see opportunity in any situation and believe that the bad stuff, if you have faith, patience, and strength, always passes and the sunrise will be beautiful, nourishing, and redeeming.

It’s just that I suspect it is very hard to see how screwed up our modern life has become if one has not been able to step away from it — far enough away — to put it in perspective.

Vacations usually don’t take us away from the worst of it. Until we park most of our modern day stressors on the side of the road, it is almost impossible to see the color of the poison we try to live in each day.

On the trail one of the mantras has always been to “hike your own hike,”

We’re all different.

So, what I need to do — again — is reengineer how I live. It will start simply; I will again be at the YMCA at 4:45 in the morning most mornings waiting for them to open at 5:00 a.m., and not leave until around 6:30, close to exhausted but an empty and clean exhausted.

I will also get my running shoes on again and get back to the backboard with my tennis racquet. That is step one.

Once I get that down, it causes me to self-correct and move onto steps two and three. It’s a chain reaction. The health/ exercise and the nutrition steps will be by far the easiest ones.

Neutralizing or eliminating stress — much of it caused by the internet and modern forms of communication — will be much more of a challenge. I know I have the ability and shall eventually get back to this better place — a healthier place, a more sustainable one.

I have seen what our lives used to be like before we were overwhelmed by the pace and demands of modern life, and I have, for a few short amounts of time, lived that life.

It’s worth the hard work to go back to it. It is.

Winning the war on opioids

By LEE CHADWICK Guest contributor If you have not experienced a personal loss resulting from the current epidemic of opioid addiction, you may be totally unaware of who is being affected by the rampant and indiscriminate destruction around us.

Individually, more people die from Chadwick prescription drug use every three days in America than all of those who died in 9/11. If this epidemic were a terrorist plot – if these deaths were the result of an act of war by a known enemy, the outcry would be loud and long. The death toll would rank it as the most successful terrorist action ever waged in the free world.

The poorly informed assume that those affected are the disadvantaged dregs of society. People who by their own sad self-indulgence, fuel the proliferation of these poisons. We might find it easy to believe that we are safe, that the failure to avoid addiction is the moral defeat of the weak. Instead it is now the leading cause of death in people under 50 in the US. Clearly federal leadership is lagging far behind.

Why? Because the makers of opioids have spent more than $800 million lobbying our legislators into indifference…and submission. To offer some scope, the heavily funded gun lobby spent only $100 million in the same period.

Vikings to camp Oct. 20-21 at Roswell’s Barrington Hall

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Vikings are returning this year to Roswell’s historic grounds.

From Oct. 20-21, everyone is invited to visit a Viking encampment at Barrington Hall, 535 Barrington Drive.

At the encampment, people can get a taste of Viking life, thanks to costumed reenactors from the Sons of Loki. The group has staging similar reenactments annually at Barrington Hall since 2015 as well as at several schools in Georgia and South Carolina.

The weekend will boast several demonstrations of Viking ritual combat, crafts and camp life, complete with a Kids Zone for children.

The camp will open 10 a.m. on Saturday with a raider tribute to the Jarls (rulers) as well as a blessing to the Norse gods and elves. Then, around 1 p.m., the group will call a Thing (assembly) with several trials relating to property damage, a cursed farmer and murder.

The afternoon will close out at 5 p.m.

with several activities, crafts, stories, rune casting and axe throwing. Sunday’s schedule will repeat Saturday.

The events are a little different each year, said Special Events Coordinator Bill Browning, but the group always aims to help visitors have a good time while learning about Viking culture.

Each year’s encampment features something different. Last year, for instance, there was a reenactment of the crowning of a new Viking Jarl and feast.

And two years ago, the Sons of Loki reenacted a Viking Wedding.

Since the beginning, it has been well received,” Browning said. “The first year we held the event it was raining steadily and cold all weekend, but we still had approximately 200 people attend.”

Each year since, the number have doubled.

“It really is a family event with children of all ages in attendance,” Browning said. “We’ve had a positive response to the Viking Encampment from all ages.”

Gypsy Rose brings live music to downtown Roswell

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Music fans rejoice – a new music venue is opening soon in Roswell’s Historic District.

Gypsy Rose Music, founded by local resident Brittany Crooms, an intimate venue devoted to original Crooms live music and private events is slated to open by the end of the year. It will be located at 964 Alpharetta St., near Canton Street, in the same building previously occupied by Classy Clutter.

Crooms is opening the venue out of a passion for merging music, entertainment and community.

She said she has loved music from a young age and nurtured it with singing and acting. That passion only grew once she moved to Athens, where she regularly worked closely with local musicians and bands.

After she moved to Roswell a year ago, Crooms said she felt inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit and drive that the city’s business owners are known for, and eventually, created the concept for Gypsy Rose.

“As a community-loving resident and passionate music lover, I began to crave somewhere where these two things collide,” Crooms said. “The more I talked to people, the more others seemed to want somewhere devoted to original live music with a vision similar to mine.”

Current plans call for Gypsy Rose to be open Wednesdays through Sundays.

Gypsy Rose, a new music venue, will occupy the same building that once housed Classy Clutter on Alpharetta Street.

Some of Crooms’ favorite music genres for the venue range between blues, funk, Americana, jam, southern rock and indie.

“People can expect to find an upbeat and comfortable venue full of good vibes and a staff that will quickly feel like family,” Crooms said. “We are strategically selecting the most talented musicians to perform, and patrons can expect quality music they won’t see anywhere else in this area.”

When it is not putting on concerts and shows, the 2,700 square foot building will host workshops, classes and camps for singer-songwriters and budding musicians. Live band karaoke and themed parties are also slated to become regular events.

Crooms said she plans for every inch of Gypsy Rose to be devoted to some form of the arts. The walls, for example, will serve as a rotating gallery for local artists.

“By nature, music brings people together and builds a bridge for different generations and people of varying cultural and political beliefs to all come together in a shared passion,” Crooms said. “It helps promote acceptance and deeper connections. My main goal is to support artists’ dreams and strengthen the relationships between members of this community I love and call home.”

In addition to hosting music and art, Gypsy Rose will also host rotating food trucks and serve a selection of local and

craft beers and cocktails.

“Roswell is regionally known for our strong hospitality industry, and with the recent growth of this sector, there’s been a growing need for live entertainment and event spaces,” said Steve Stroud, executive director of Roswell Inc. “Gypsy Rose is satisfying two major markets while bringing a new dynamic to our popular Historic District.”

Crooms will serve as Gypsy Rose’s venue manager. She has already secured a sales and marketing director, booking agent, sound engineer and beverage manager. She plans to hire seven to eight bartenders and four cocktail servers before opening.

Downtown Gulch mobilizes city As an outsider looking in, with high rises seeming to break ground on a monthly basis, I take for granted that the City of Atlanta sometimes has similar conflicts as other metro cities when a Geoff smith new project is subAssurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com mitted for approval.

The proposed Gulch development has started a debate that has mobilized groups all over the city to weigh in and try to move it along.

If you are not familiar the Gulch, it is about 40 acres of parking lots and rail lines that sit just east of Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Most of the property sits well below street level, and initial plans are to bring all of it up to street-level in the way of a platform. This alone is estimated to take three years. Once built, developers and planners are envisioning 15 brand-new city blocks with roads, sidewalks, bike lanes, gathering spaces and parks. The developer’s plan is to add between 1.8 million and 9.3 million square feet of office space — a big stretch that leaves the door open for a major company to agree to move in and drastically influence how it is developed.

And yes, it has been said that the Gulch would be a top target should Amazon decide to move its headquarters here.

But even if the project was only about building the city blocks on raw land, it would be massive in scale. To raise the street level makes it a massively massive project. A developer friend of mine told me there are probably only a handful of developers who would be able to attempt such a project. The entire thing has been estimated to cost up to $5 billion. Because of the immense cost of just preparing the site for development, the developer has asked the city of Atlanta for up to $1.75 billion in public financing — and that is where the rub is coming from. The public financing would

come in the way of tax incentives.

Some on the Atlanta City Council are listening to some citizens and advocacy groups who claim the city is giving away a chance to secure a major income stream.

“You’re giving almost $2 billion away for a $5 billion deal,” Deborah Scott, executive director of the downtown community advocacy group Georgia StandUP, was quoted as saying in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. “We want the Gulch to develop one day….This is not the deal.”

No one seems to be arguing in favor of not developing the Gulch. There’s no real way to make a case for it needing to remain as it is – which is a kind of dark hole surrounded by office buildings and the state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

But because of the complexity in improving the site and readying it for development, many view the current project, which has been brought forward by Los Angeles developer CIM Group, as a gift that should not be turned away.

“From our view, redeveloping the Gulch is an imperative,” said Hala Moddelmog, president and CEO of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce in a prepared statement. “Delaying or dismissing this opportunity is not optional. It may be decades before another developer puts forth the time and resources to turn one of our city’s greatest economic development challenges into the opportunity of a lifetime.”

In addition to taking on a task very few developers would want to take on, City Council members also credit the developer with agreeing to several conditions that would benefit the community.

Those include putting aside $28 million for affordable housing, $12 million for economic development, $12 million to enlarge a nearby fire station and $5 million to replace a bridge connecting the Gulch to the Castleberry Hill neighborhood.

Other advocates for the project say that it is in the unique geographical

Commercial realtor JLL in Atlanta put out an Op-Ed in the Atlanta Business Chronicle that endorsed the project, saying “the development...will connect areas of downtown that have been partitioned for decades, rejoining Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the newly renovated State Farm Arena, CNN Center, Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia World Congress Center, Underground Atlanta, Five Points MARTA station and Downtown proper. Our downtown will no longer be a collection of interests isolated from one another.

Crooked Creek Club members play the newly renovated course at its reopening on Oct. 11.

Crooked Creek Country Club reopens MILTON, Ga. — Milton’s Crooked Creek Country Club reopened Oct. 11 after a $1.3 million renovation.

Updates to the club include Primo Zoysia turf on the greens. Crooked Creek is the first 18-hole club in the world to feature the warm-weather turf.

The course’s bunkers have also been updated and the club now includes a monarch butterfly habitat.

The clubhouse renovation includes new flooring, banquet and patio furniture, hitting tee lines on the driving range with new bag stands and curtains to close off the outdoor pavilion for weddings or special events. New hitting pads and bag stands were installed on the driving range.

The club is under new ownership and will be managed by Billy Casper Golf.

The Davis Academy Peachtree Park Prep To celebrate 20 Years of Loving to Learn at Peachtree Park Prep there were several Alumni events including the 1st ANNUAL “I WAS A PREPPIE” national tee shirt Day. A recent PPP graduate has had photos published in a luxury Atlanta magazine and the PPP community is following a former graduate “super model” on the international stage, as well as a PPP Alumni appearing in a

feature film due in theaters in 2018.

The accomplishments and achievements tracked and recorded through 23 years of PPP Alumni are outstanding! The point being two-fold.

Consolidating accounts can lead to clear financial strategy None of us can completely control all the things that happen to us. Over the course of their lives, many people pick up a variety of financial accounts from multiple sources. They might have a few IRAs from different providers, a couple of old 401(k) plans from past employers, an insurance policy (or two) purchased many years ago, and a scattershot of stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit and other investments.

If this picture describes your situ-

ation, you may want to think about consolidating. For one thing, having a variety of accounts can run up a lot of fees. Furthermore, you’ll have lots of paperwork to keep track of all your accounts, including several different tax statements.

Plus, just by having so many accounts, you risk forgetting about some of them – and if you don’t think you’d ever forget about your own money, consider this: Well over $40 billion in unclaimed cash and property, including 401(k)s, pensions and IRAs, is awaiting return to the rightful owners, according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators.

But beyond reducing your possible fees, paperwork and potential for lost assets, consolidating your accounts with one provider can give you a centralized, unifying investment strategy, one that can help you in the following ways: • Diversification – If you own several

different financial accounts, including IRAs, 401(k)s and online accounts, you might have many similar investments within them. You might even own a cash-value insurance policy containing investments that closely track the ones you have in the other accounts.

This type of duplication can be harmful, because if a market downturn primarily affects one type of asset, and your portfolio is dominated by that asset or similar ones, you could take a big hit.

Johns Creek downs Cambridge to extend win streak

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Johns Creek extended its win streak to five games and remained atop the Region 7-AAAAAAA standings with a 38-20 win over Cambridge in Milton Friday night.

The win will likely not go down as the Gladiators’ prettiest of the year after they incurred 11 penalties and had some assignment issues, according to head coach Matt Helmerich. But the Gladiators used another impressive offensive performance and limited Cambridge’s playmakers to power the win.

“We’re coming off a few pretty good games of fundamental football,” Helmerich said. “We preached all week Cambridge beat us last year, they’re very well coached and Johns Creek has never beaten Cambridge. We made some silly mistakes. Cambridge is a good football team and they capitalized for the most part in the first half.”

Despite a sluggish start, the Gladiators racked up 501 total offensive yards.

Quarterback Zach Gibson connected with seven receivers and went 26-29 for 373 yards with three touchdowns.

Yong Min Lee led all receivers with 159 yards, including an 86-yard touchdown.

Giovanni Dyer had nine receptions for 101 yards, and Matt Casey and Dalton Pearson each had over 50 yards receiving.

“Gibson made some incredible plays tonight that got us going, and the offensive line is getting better each week,” Helmerich said.

Cambridge’s defense held in the red zone on the Gladiator’s first drive, forcing a field goal from Jack Linne.

The Bears came up with another stop on Johns Creek’s ensuing drive, and a fumble on an attempted fake punt set Cambridge up in Gladiator territory.

The Bears looked to tie the game with a 24-yard field goal, but Patrick Taylor blocked the kick.

The Gladiators then used 11 plays to advance to the Bears’ 35-yard line but faced a fourth-and-12. Receiver Giovanni Dyer, who had implored his coaches to go for the conversion, caught a slant at the 7-yard line and fought his way into

the end zone to put the Gladiators up 10-0.

The Gladiators extended the margin two minutes later after their defense forced a punt that was returned 39-yards for a touchdown by Pearson.

Cambridge’s running game was limited in the first half, but the Bears found the end zone with 10 seconds remaining on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Zach Harris to Ridge Polk.

Helmerich said he told Ridge Polk following the game that he had lost sleep over containing him, but his defense held the senior receiver mostly in check.

Polk had three receptions for 67 yards and was held to negative yards on sweep plays.

“We eliminated his touches for the most part, but we have some things to clean up,” Helmerich said.

Milton defeats defending region champs South Forsyth

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com Milton 35, South Forsyth 21 Milton prevailed in what should be a crucial battle for the Region 5-AAAAAAA title by downing defending region champs South Forsyth on the road Friday. South handed Milton its only region loss last season to claim the region title.

Milton led 6-0 after a low-scoring first half, but the Eagles found an offensive rhythm and took advantage of South turnovers in the second half.

South Forsyth capitalized on a Milton fumble early in the third quarter to take its only lead of the game. The Eagles responded with 29 unanswered points behind three touchdown passes from quarterback Jordan Yates and a Josh Edwards rushing score to build a 35-7 lead in early in the fourth.

While South found pay dirt twice in the final period, both Drew Morris passing scores, Milton’s margin was too great to overcome.

Milton (5-2, 2-0) will look to continue their win streak at home against Forsyth Central Friday. The War Eagles (4-3, 1-1) are home against North Forsyth.

After a tight first half, the Raiders pulled away to secure the win on home turf.

Alpharetta quarterback Bradley Rowlinson put the Raiders on top early with an 80-yard touchdown rush, but Chattahoochee responded with a 60-yard touchdown pass from Damon Stewart to Max Webb just 20 seconds later.

Webb found the end zone again midway through the first on a 62-yard scoring rush.

Continuing the streak of long touchdowns, Rowlison hit Jaden Slocum on a 68-yard score a minute later.

Emory physician educates on sports injury risk

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Sports medicine specialists know intense specialization among young athletes increases risk of injury, and they want to use that knowledge to change the culture of youth sports.

Dr. Neeru Jayanthi is an Emory sports medicine physician who works with local athletes. His research has shown when young athletes focus all their energy on one sport it increases their risk of serious injury with little to no benefit to performance.

“Many, many kids, especially kids from affluent households such as our community here, have so much opportunity to [get involved] in sports,” Jayanthi said. “A lot of them are encouraged to only play that one sport, give up all the other sports, thinking that will help them in their long term future, but we’re not finding that in the data. In fact, it may be opposite to that.”

Jayanthi recently published an article titled “Socioeconomic Factors for Sports Specialization and Injury in Youth Athletes.” The study showed that young athletes from high income families reported more serious overuse

injuries than athletes from a lower socioeconomic class.

More affluent athletes reported higher rates of sports specialization, more weekly hours in organized sports, less frequent opportunities for free play Dr. Jayanthi and greater participation in individual sports, all of which correlates to higher risk of injury.

Jayanthi’s main recommendations for parents: children should engage in more than one sport or athletic activity, the number of weekly practice hours should be less than the child’s age and there should be a 2:1 ratio of directed practice and free play.

Just letting children spend a few hours each week playing for fun without coach supervision can significantly reduce risk of injury, Jayanthi said. But beyond these individual recommendations, he hopes there will be a culture change.

Britt Lee is a Johns Creek father with 16-year-old twins who are competitive tennis players. He said the specialization culture is so strong, fighting it is like “paddling upstream.”

“The culture is driving faster and faster towards specialization and ultracompetitiveness,” Lee said. “How am I going to not swim completely against that, because you can’t swim completely against that and compete, but how am I going to navigate this in a way that’s healthy for my kids?”

For Lee, it has been important to follow the physical recommendations of the sports medicine physicians, but also care for his sons’ emotional and social wellbeing.

Jayanthi and Lee agree parents should keep their child’s long-term health in mind. A life-long love of sports is more important than being an elite athlete by the age of 12, Jayanthi said.

“My goal as a parent is not to raise my kid to be a tennis player,” Lee said.

“My goal is to raise my kid to be a healthy young man. One day tennis is going to end. It may end in high school, it may end in college, for a small percentage it may end after a pro-career, but it is going to end.”

Jayanthi acknowledged sports shouldn’t be all or nothing. Rather than simply saying specialization is unhealthy, physicians should help athletes find the balance between minimizing risk and maximizing performance.

Milton High inducts Hall of Fame members

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Five Milton High School graduates donned the red jackets of the Milton Hall of Fame at an induction ceremony during halftime of the Eagle’s Oct. 5 football game. The inductees, include a current NFL player, a former school principal and the first female athlete to receive a full scholarship. All were honored with the distinction and escorted onto the field by current students.

Peyton Barber, a 2013 graduate, was the youngest inductee. A running back for the Eagles, Barber rushed for 1,700 yards and 22 touchdowns during his time at Milton. Barber competed at the collegiate level with Auburn, was named the 2015 Offensive Player of the Year and rushed for over 1,000 yards with 13 touchdowns.

He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in May 2016 and is currently the starting running back.

Milton alum Karen Head, executive director of the communication center at Georgia Tech, was also honored. Head, a 1985 grad, is the recipient of the Oxford International Women’s Festival Poetry Prize and serves as the editor of

Former Milton teacher and coach Van Keys, a 1979 alum, was also inducted.

Keys worked for Fulton County Schools for 32 years and spent 27 years at Milton. Keys was teacher in the physical education department and was named the athletic director. He served as a head coach for the boys varsity basketball

team and the girls varsity tennis team, and was an assistant coach in football, baseball, softball and track.

Tina Blalock Smith, the first female athlete to earn a full athletic scholarship and 1980 valedictorian, was also honored.

Smith served as the co-captain of the girls basketball team from 197880, leading the Eagles to two region championships and the Fulton County title. Smith was named to the North Fulton All-Star team, the Fulton County

All-Star team, the Atlanta Tip-Off Club Team of the Year, All-State Honorable Mention, All-State Second Team, Region 5-A All-Star team, Region 4-AAA All-Star team, and Region 4-AAA North All-Tournament team.

During her playing career at Milton, she amassed 14 school records before competing with Georgia Tech at the collegiate level. Smith is a currently a math tutor.

Former principal Phil Thomas was also inducted to the Hall of Fame.

Thomas began his tenure at the school in 1971 as a social studies teacher and later served as the social studies department head. He was named principal in 1986 and served in that role until 1998.

Under Thomas’ direction, Milton was named to the 100 best schools in the country by USA Today, received a Blue Ribbon award as a Georgia School of Excellence and was nominated for the national Blue Ribbon schools program.

Thomas received the first Governor’s Innovation Award for promoting the use of technology in the classroom.

In 1998, Thomas was named the director of instructional technology for the Georgia Department of Education. He is currently a consultant for the Georgia Accrediting Commission.

Covered bridge magic at Stovall Mill One thing you learn if you hang around very long is that things change.

I’m thinking in particular of a bridge – a covered bridge – the Stovall Mill covered bridge near Helen, Ga. STEVE HUDSON I like covered Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net bridges. I always have. There’s usually something vaguely magical about them, and it’s just the thing for an incurable romantic like me.

With a length of just 33 feet, the Stovall Mill Bridge crosses Chickamauga Creek in White County (there’s another Chickamauga Creek in northwest Georgia with an altogether different claim to fame). It’s the smallest of Georgia’s remaining historic covered bridges.

The first time I saw this covered bridge, and that was decades ago, it was shaded by an enormous tree. I remember taking a few pictures of it (how I wish I could find those negatives).

But nowadays the tree is gone and the bridge’s interior has morphed into a gallery of graffiti.

Yuck.

Why do some people feel a compulsion to spray paint names and dates on old historic structures? Beats me.

Somebody once called it part of the “new urban ecosystem,” whatever that means.

But I like the old and graffiti-free ecosystem just fine.

Still, it’s intriguing to read what those graffiti writers write. You learn things when you do. On a recent visit, for example, I learned that John C. loves Susan M., or at least he did at one time.

I wonder if they made it? Did their affection for one another survive? Maybe.

Maybe not.

But the bridge which immortalizes their one-time devotion is doing okay – even after all these years and graffiti notwithstanding.

Constructed in 1895, it was actually the second covered bridge to be built there. A previous one, built in the late 1800s, washed away a few years before the current one was built. In 1917, Fred Stovall, after whom the bridge is named, purchased the water-powered mill operation, which included a grist mill, sawmill, and shingle mill. The mill dam and mill washed away in a flood in 1964, but you can still see the remains of the old dam.

From Helen take Ga. 75 toward Cleveland. Turn left on Ga. 17 and continue to Ga. 255. Turn left and continue about 2.5 miles to the little parking area at Stovall Mill covered bridge, which will be in a curve on your right. to point out that it was featured in the 1951 movie “I’d Climb the Highest Mountain.” The film starred Susan Hayward and William Lundigan.

The thing you hear most often, though, is that the bridge is haunted.

“Yep, haunted,” said the elderly lady I met there the other day. “You cross that bridge after dark, and you’ll hear babies crying. And horse-drawn buggies too creaking while they cross over. You ever heard ‘em?”

I had not.

“Well, I have,” she said. “Scary, sure enough.”

There was a pause.

“Don’t you worry about those haunts now?” I asked, not really knowing what else to say.

“Naw, not right now,” she said. “It’s daytime. But after dark....”

Of course, all covered bridge legends are not so spooky. I remembered one that I like a little better: You’ll hear that if a young woman makes a chain of clover and strings it across the entrance to the bridge, the first person to break the chain will prove to be her one true love.

I remembered another one too. It’s said that if you drop a penny through

the cracks between the deck planks and make a wish before it hits the water, then the wish will come true.

Hmmm.

I had a fishing trip coming up, a trip with a good friend to a place where there are big fish.

I felt in my pocket. Sure enough, there was a little bit of change.

I fished out the coins and pulled out a penny. Then I walked along the bridge until I found a good gap between the floor boards. Below it, the creek flowed quiet and peaceful.

Looking around to be sure no one was watching, and feeling a little silly, I bent down and dropped the penny and wished fast – fast! – before the copper coin landed with a tiny splash and disappeared.

What happened?

Well, a couple of weeks later, on the way back from that fishing trip, we stopped at the bridge for a few more photos. I walked out onto the little span one more time. I found the gap where I’d dropped the penny, all the while thinking about that enormous trout that I’d landed just a few hours before.

Covered bridge magic?

Just saying…

Once homeless veteran credits nonprofit for changing life

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Two years ago, U.S. Air Force veteran Tyler Bowser was homeless, unemployed and struggling with both mental health issues and alcohol addiction.

“I remember very vividly, sitting on a wall down by Georgia State, drinking beer out of a bag, and I was indistinguishable from any other bum,” Bowser said. “I remember a family walking toward me with a stroller. And when I looked up at them, they careened around me…I could not go any lower.”

Bowser spoke Oct. 11 at the Roswell Rotary Club and shared his story of recovery with the Veterans Empowerment Organization.

Bowser had served honorably in the Air Force from 1996 to 2000 as a satellite and wideband communications journeyman. He was deployed to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Southern Watch.

But when he attempted to rejoin civilian life, Bowser said that he found it difficult to adjust. The camaraderie and support that was so easily given in the Air Force was scant in corporate America.

Eventually, Bowser took a job at

Starbucks to tide him over and found that he really enjoyed it. He said he thrived there and found some of that camaraderie that he was missing so much.

Around the same time, however, Bowser’s home life became troubled when his 16-month-old daughter died from a genetic disease, then divorce.

Reeling from this upheaval, Bowser once again found some comfort serving again in Afghanistan in 2008 for three years in a war zone.

But when he returned home, Bowser once again found it difficult to rejoin civilian life. He eventually lost his job and, living out of his car, moved to Atlanta. His car too was soon repossessed.

Bowser said he had reached his lowest point.

“God came to me and spoke to me,” Bowser said. “He said, ‘I love you so much buddy. I’ll be here for you if you want to continue down this path to an early death, or you can jump off right now.’”

The next day, Bowser sought help from the Veterans Empowerment Organization in Atlanta. July 2016, he had his last drink and enrolled in an outpatient program for substance abuse at Ft. McPherson. And that October, he found employment with the Veterans Empowerment Organization, a privately funded,

Bowser now works as a Veteran Community Ambassador to raise awareness about veteran’s struggles and help other veterans like himself find housing, employment and an overall better quality of life.

Currently, there are about 3,000 homeless veterans in Georgia.

“The government has certain, particular ways it can utilize its dollars, and unfortunately, that does not cover every veteran,” Bowser said. “We believe that veteran that ever served in our United States military deserves a roof over their head and three meals a day.”

Veterans Empowerment Organization has an 81 percent success rate in helping veterans obtain sustainable income and sustainable permanent housing.

Bowser is just one of many who has seen first-hand how powerful this organization can be in helping turn veterans’ lives around.

“Two years ago, I was having my final beer in a paper bag about a mile away from the Atlanta Falcon’s new stadium,” Bowser said. “This year, in July, I was having a root beer with Arthur and Angela Blank at their ranch in Montana.”

History in the making Groups merge to commemorate Armistice Day centennial

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — It’s only fitting that groups dedicated to preserving history would set out to make a little history of their own.

For the first time since they were formed, historical societies from Alpharetta, Roswell and Johns Creek are collaborating to commemorate a single event: the 100th anniversary of the end of hostilities in World War I — “The War to End All Wars.”

It occurred on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

To recognize the occasion, the Alpharetta and Old Milton County Historical Society will host an afternoon program Nov. 11 that includes historic displays, a guest speaker and a chance for visitors to mingle with their neighbors.

It will be a reunion of sorts, because North Fulton cities share a lot of the same history, including genealogy.

“I went to the Johns Creek meeting last night because their speaker was my third cousin,” said Pat Miller, president of the Alpharetta and Old Milton County Historical Society. “I had communicated with him by email, but we’d actually never met. That was kind of fun.”

Miller is spearheading a drive to bring North Fulton historical societies together in a loose-knit umbrella they hope will expand memberships and heighten interest in local history.

“It’s the first time we’ve gotten together to do a project, so we’re pretty excited about it,” she said.

The program starts at 2 p.m., Nov. 11, with a social gathering in the meeting area of Alpharetta City Hall, just outside the new museum. Displays of World War I memorabilia from area historical societies will be set up for visitors to the museum. The exhibit, which runs for about 10 days, will feature some special items.

Autrey Mills Nature Preserve and Heritage Center in Johns Creek is loaning a World War I uniform. Roswell Historical Society will display an historic service flag from the era.

At 2:30 p.m., local historian Michael Hitt will share research he has discovered about North Fulton residents who distinguished themselves during the war years.

Johnson said her organization is loaning a number of pieces for the Alpharetta museum display.

Fulton historical coalition so we can share some of our resources,” Johnson said. “We tend to have some of the same speakers, so if we can mix it up and maybe have more collaboration, we can attract some different names to speak before our societies and our membership can mingle more.”

Those who know the area’s history, she said, know much of North Fulton is intertwined.

“A lot of the families that have lived in this area over the last 100 years, many of them moved from, say, Gwinnett to what’s now Milton or Roswell,” she said. “There’s a lot of mingling of these families.”

Johns Creek Historical Society President Joan Compton said the collaboration is bound to boost her young organization.

“We’re less than 2 years old, so being able to collaborate with these established historical societies, for one thing, it gives us more credibility,” she said. “It certainly widens our audience.”

As a young organization, Compton said the Johns Creek Historical Society is still finding its footing, and the neighboring organizations have already helped in that regard.

One disadvantage, she said, is Johns Creek has only existed as a city for 10 years, so a lot of the local history was not saved.

STAR House Foundation announces new roles, new hire ROSWELL, Ga. — A familiar face has taken the reins at STAR House Foundation. Stephanie Christiansen, former Development Director of the Roswell-based nonprofit, has been named its Executive Director.

As Development Director, Christiansen managed all STAR House fundraising initiatives and events, including the Roswell Beer Festival, a signature event in the city’s square every spring. In this position, she raised much-needed

funds for the foundation’s programs at Mimosa and Esther Jackson elementary schools and Holcomb Bridge and Elkins Pointe middle schools. In her new role, Christiansen will take on the additional responsibilities of operational strategy and staff leadership.

Additionally, STAR House has named Stephanie Mitra as its Program Operations and Finance Manager. Mitra is also a familiar face at STAR House, having worked part-time as its Finance Manager

since early 2016. Mitra will continue her responsibilities for all financial aspects of the organization and will work with Christiansen and other foundation staff to insure the program’s children are achieving or exceeding academic standards.

STAR House has likewise recently welcomed Leena Kiber as Grants Manager. Kiber is a seasoned grant and givings manager, most recently serving in that capacity at The Lovett School. Kiber will

be responsible for grant identification and response, which will help generate the funds needed to support existing programs and make it possible for the organization to expand its programs into additional schools.

In North Fulton County, 3,514 children live in poverty and 7,818 children receive free or reduced lunches in school.

Roswell receives AmeriCorps grant for after-school programs ROSWELL, Ga. — The city of Roswell has been awarded an $89,709 grant from AmeriCorps to support local youth for the second straight year.

Last year the city received a $74,000 planning grant to begin the process of providing enhanced after-school programming at select Roswell elementary schools.

This year’s grant will be used by Roswell to continue its effort to support afterschool programs at four area schools with the goal of increasing elementary literacy and providing additional STEM and health and wellness education.

Roswell is contributing up to an additional $39,748 in monetary and in-kind funding to facilitate the project.

The city is also recruiting 20 AmeriCorps members to work with teachers to provide additional instruction and homework support to participating students.
