Man indicted in Roswell fatal overdose case

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — A federal grand jury has indicted and arraigned an Atlanta man on federal charges related to the distribution of fentanyl, a powerful opioid, that led to a fatal overdose in Roswell.

Edward Culton, 25, faces charges of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, seven counts of aiding and abetting the distribution of fentanyl and one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.

In similar charges, a Roswell drug dealer allegedly supplied by Culton has pleaded guilty to distributing fentanyl.

The alleged fentanyl distribution has resulted in two overdoses, one of which ended in death, said U.S. Attorney Byung “BJay” Pak. Culton had distributed pills laced with fentanyl that were disguised to look as Roxicodone tablets, Pak said.

Between September 2017-February 2018, Culton allegedly supplied Hubert Nathans, 29, a drug dealer in the Roswell area, with hundreds of fake Roxicodon pills. Nathans then sold a number of these pills to a man who died from an overdose on Oct. 3, 2017. Nathans then sold a pill to a woman who overdosed.

“This counterfeit ‘pill peddler’ was a menace to society,” said Robert J.

Murphy, the special agent in charge of the DEA Atlanta Field Division. “Pills in the underground drug market are often diluted with dangerous and deadly substances, as was the case in this investigation. Purchasing pills on the street is synonymous to playing Russian roulette, as there’s no quality control or efficacy in the process.”

This case is presented as a part of Operation SCOPE (Strategically Combatting Opioids through Prosecution and Enforcement), an initiative launched by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to partner with federal and local law enforcement to fight illegally prescribed painkillers, heroin, and synthetic opioids.

Piano teacher arrested for child molestation ROSWELL, Ga. —Roswell police, along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office arrested a Roswell man Sept.

13 on two counts of aggravated child molestation.

Troy Lawrence Palmer, 55, had taught piano at multiple music academies as well as at Georgia State University from 1995-2000.

Two victims recently came forward saying they were molested multiple times between 2008-2012 by Palmer while inside his home.

Police investigate armed robbery at Subway ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta police are investigating an armed robbery that took place Sept. 5 at the subway on Crabapple Road.

An employee of the shop told police that a man came up to the counter at

Palmer had been teaching piano out of his home for the past 13 years. He has taught piano for over 35 years, during which he has given hundreds of students piano lessons.

Roswell police said they believe there could be more victims.

9:50 p.m. and ordered a sandwich.

While the employee was making the sandwich, the man pushed a white bag onto the counter and lifted his shirt, showing a gun in his waistband.

The man then told the employee to “remain calm” and put cash from the cash register in the bag.

The employee put $356 in cash in the bag, and also hit a panic alarm, alerting police.

Officers arrived with a K-9 unit, but the dog was unable to track the man’s scent past the parking lot.

Alpharetta log cabin restoration hits snag Historical Society seeks donations to complete work

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — It is the bane of every renovation project.

No matter how carefully you plan for that day when you draw back the curtains, something happens.

That’s the situation with the Alpharetta and Old Milton County Historical Society and its effort to restore the 83-year-old FFA log cabin. After a major fundraising event last year, the historic structure was moved from its original site at the old Milton High School campus to a small park about 500 feet farther west on Milton Avenue.

Estimates for the total project, including the renovations and landscaping, ran around $180,000, according to Historical Society President Pat Miller.

But now, there’s a hitch.

The organization learned recently it must install a sprinkler system.

“We were just looking forward to it opening in October,” said Mary Lee, who served as president of the nonprofit during much of the planning stages. “We were going to have a fall festival there.

We were so excited, and then this bombshell came.”

That’s not to say the project is at a standstill.

The outside foundation is nearly complete, a new roof is going up, the interior is framed, and the basement has been poured.

Workers are in the process of rebuilding the fireplace from scratch. The old stones from the original fireplace were too large and unwieldy, so organizers opted for smaller stones with a flat

A small bathroom and back room have been added to the original structure.

At the time of the relocation last year, the Historical Society had collected about $162,000 in donations, including $50,000 from the City of Alpharetta, and a $15,000 contribution from the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

More contributions have since

poured in.

Right now, Lee said, the nonprofit has spent around $206,000 for the project, and it needs another surge in donations.

To accommodate the sprinkler system, a larger, 4-inch water pipe must be installed from the cabin to a line across Milton Avenue. Project leaders still don’t know how extensive the sprinkler system must be because the fire marshal has

yet to determine the cabin’s capacity, Lee said.

Another added expense has cropped up in the chinking and sealing of the logs around the added room in back, she said.

“I know anytime you do renovations, it seems it always ends up more than your estimate, plus all of this development that’s going around town, that’s just upping the price on everything,” Lee said. “So far, we have spent $206,000 and we have about $32,000 in reserves, so we’re going to need about $60,000 more to finish the cabin, get it up and running.”

The Historical Society is asking for community support to help complete the project. It hopes to make the cabin a gathering place for craft classes, educational demonstrations and other community events.

Positions open for East Roswell Economic Activity Committee

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The City of Roswell is looking to shine a light on its east side, and there’s still time to join the effort.

Earlier this summer, the city approved a resolution to create an East Roswell Economic Activity Committee to stimulate growth in Roswell east of Warsaw Road. The committee will consist of 10 unpaid volunteers and two city staff members, appointed by the mayor and council. The deadline to apply as a volunteer is 5 p.m., Monday, Sept. 24.

In recent months, lack of development along the Holcomb Bridge corridor has been a source of great concern for residents after several anchor tenants, including the Target and Kohl’s, pulled up stakes. Residents have consistently commented in council meetings and forums that the steady economic decline of East Roswell has left them feeling neglected in favor of the west side, especially Canton Street.

The new committee is charged with developing recommendations to provide tools city leaders can use to stimulate business and revitalize underutilized areas on the east side.

The sessions, which the general public is encouraged to attend or observe, will provide opportunities to discuss regional economic, demographic and geographic factors influencing East Ro-

swell. After each meeting, the committee will present results with recommendations for the city.

The city likewise plans to make reports, videos and presentations from these committee meetings available to the public after each session.

One of the best parts of being a journalist is getting to meet many different types of people from all walks of life. I love getting to hear why people are passionate about their community, their family’s history and how they’re working to make their hometown

a better place.

But with that comes the gloomy stories of houses being torn down due to new development or homeless children who stuff food into their pockets during school lunches to bring home to their younger siblings.

That latter story is one I heard last week while I was covering a fence installation at Fill Ministries in north Forsyth.

Fill Ministries grows the food used by Meals by Grace which feeds thousands of hungry kids in our community ever year.

It’s a noble effort, and I enjoyed seeing the community rally around Fill Ministries Founder Stephen Daniels and his farm to help future families.

But that’s not the story that stuck out to me the most.

Years ago, Daniels and his wife were at church one Sunday giving out bags of food to the hungry. He felt good about his efforts until the end of the event when plenty of bags were left. At first, Daniels said he was shocked to see all this food sitting there not being picked up.

He quickly learned the real reason was so many people in the community don’t have reliable transportation. These are people who truly need just a little bit of help in the form of food or other necessities who are unable to even reach the help being offered.

That’s what inspired Daniels to create Fill Ministries.

His story got me thinking. When will we decide as a community enough is enough?

I’ve lived in Alpharetta basically my entire life and I’ve been involved as a professional journalist for nearly four years, so I’ve heard plenty of pros and cons regarding MARTA moving north.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, most of the anti-transit rhetoric is frankly ridiculous.

We have families, children and workers who can’t make it to a job, school or

I read hundreds of police reports every week from Forsyth County and I consistently see the same issues regarding burglaries, fights and domestic violence.

I hate to break it to you, but crime is already here. With the community growing bigger by the day, it is inevitable “bad people” will come, too. But there have always been people looking to do harm. Giving them access to a station won’t increase the chances you see someone stealing a big screen TV onto a MARTA train. For starters, where would they even hide it?

But that shouldn’t deter lawmakers from making a far larger scope of people have an easier and better life.

It’s time we start to see how much potential our area and its people have and let them show it by giving them the option of better transit.

Maybe then we won’t have to create charities to deliver basic necessities to hungry kids because we’re “too scared” of what reliable transportation will bring.

Printers were a mistake Just don’t print things.

It’s not worth it.

For the past few weeks, without fail, when I’ve gone to print something, the printer fails on me.

Think of a printer erJulia Grochowski ror, and I’ve probably encountered it.

Check.

Low toner? Check.

Streaks making text illegible? Check.

Some combo of “toner,” “spool,” “tray,” and “error”? Check.

No magenta? Can’t print a black and white document now.

No paper? Well, actually, there is.

The tray is overflowing in abundance.

“I’ll just take some out,” I say, foolishly. “Or better yet, spoon feed it one page at a time.”

But it’s not enough.

No amount is good enough to register for the printer. No lowly document you have is good enough for the printer to deign to acknowledge, let alone print.

The printer knows you’re in a hurry when you press “Print.” It knows you’ve got something important in the queue. It knows your handwriting is so awful that you need to print out anything you write so people, yourself included, can actually read it. It smells desperation. And. Thrives. On. It. Guttenburg had his heart in the right

place, creating the printing press – a beautiful marvel of a machine. It helped create books, after all, one of my favorite things in the world. And don’t forget the paper this is printed on right now.

No, commercial printers are off the hook. I’m talking about the home printers and office printers, the ones that always laugh when you send them a document, print off half of it, and then eat the rest with a horrible mechanical grinding noise. That half of the paper that sticks out tauntingly during a paper jam always looked like the printer was sticking its tongue out at me.

“You almost had me,” it says.

What’s the solution? I don’t know.

Maybe it’s the printer’s way of trying to become green in a more eco-conscious world. You can’t litter if you can’t even print off the litter first, after all.

Maybe it’s the printer’s way of trying to gently stage an intervention. “You’re really becoming too reliant on paper,” it might say. “It’s starting to become a problem. I mean, just look at how many papers surround you at any given moment. You really need to tone it down a bit.”

Or maybe, the printer is just lonely.

Maybe the printer errors are just its way of saying that it wants me to slow down in life and spend more time with it, so it’s warm, mechanical whrrrrs can lull me to sleep.

I’m sure there’s a life lesson in here somewhere. When I figure it out, I’ll be sure to print it off for you.

By LEE CHADWICK Guest contributor James A. Johnston was 19 years-old when he and his regiment began their 600-mile march to Gettysburg in 1862. And he was 95 when he returned there Chadwick for the 75th Commemoration of that battle in 1938. It seems impossible to think that James and 2 year-old John McCain could have both attended that event.

When I realized that my sister (who is still living) had been bounced upon that man’s knee, it made that ancient Civil War something brand new and very real to me. My mother‘s grandfather - a freer of slaves.

What could have made him go?

How did the issue of slavery have real relevance to him or to his community?

And then, what about the other 360,000 northern soldiers who lost their lives in the interest of others.

Imagine the negative impact of leaving families made up of women and children to face the natural dangers of a world without any convenience; with real vulnerability to much worse.

This choice was made purposefully. Was it actually undertaken to gain the freedom of strangers? People whose welfare had no direct impact on these men or the lives of those they loved.

I have come to understand that they were defining the nation they wanted America to exemplify: A country built on

freedom.

This was a time of nation building - by farmers and teachers and blacksmiths and barbers. Justice and righteousness were the tools of a people determined to create a civil society. Their intention was to create individual sovereignty unlike the monarchies of Europe and the rest of the world.

So how is it possible to have a conversation about race in America that is not informed by the sacrifice of those 360,000 mostly white men given to gain the freedom of slaves?

I once felt like a revolutionary when I boarded buses to walk in Washington D.C. with Dr. King, but I was not; not anymore than those who choose now to take a knee. In a world where we are all hungry for evidence of wisdom, or even common sense — for compassion and natural virtue, I offer this column. It will be about how human experience is altered by those serving ideas or ideals beyond their own personal needs. How real transformation is possible when communities of people join to build solutions to inequality. You will be inspired by their insight, but I also hope you’ll be empowered by them to join in building a more civil and inclusive society.

Fulton Schools to stay the course on redistricting process ‘Tweaks’ for clarity the only change moving forward

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – After a lengthy review of the process used to realign school attendance zones, the Fulton School System has determined it will maintain the existing policy it has used for nearly 20 years, with a few tweaks for clarity.

The decision to hold to the current course was based on input received from two lightly attended redistricting information meetings held last spring in both South and North Fulton. The forums were intended to explain the redistricting process and gather community comment.

An online survey was also available for additional comment.

Only 23 people attended the public meetings, and approximately 200 comments were submitted online, noted Yngrid Huff-Jones, chief planner for Fulton

Fulton Schools launches app to track buses NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Parents and students can now track their school bus schedule through a free app offered by the Fulton County School System.

Launched recently by the district’s Transportation Department, the “Here Comes The Bus” app uses GPS technology to locate and track a school bus.

“Similar to ride-sharing apps [like Uber and Lyft], buses will show up as an icon on a map, and they can follow its progress as it moves toward the bus stop,” explained Fulton Schools Transportation Director Sam Ham. “The [app] also counts down the minutes before the bus arrives.”

No more waiting in the rain and cold for the bus to come, or wondering where the bus is because of traffic delays or other factors.

“The ‘Here Comes The Bus’ app eliminates the age-old question, ‘Where is my bus?” Ham said. “It lets us be more customer-focused so our families know when the bus is on its way and can follow its progress online.”

To sign up, parents need their child’s student ID number, which is available from the school and is the same number used for the Home Access Center and school meal programs (MyPaymentsPlus). Fulton County Schools’ code – 87428 – also is needed.

“Based on the feedback we received, parents’ overwhelming concerns were those based on a lack of knowledge and understanding of the current process, rather than the policy itself,” Huff-Jones said.

She noted the redistricting policy has proven successful since 2000 in more than 30+ school redistrictings countywide. The district does acknowledge there needs to be more information provided to the community prior to redistricting.

“To help parents understand the process more clearly, staff has recommended clarifying language in the redistricting procedure as well as adding an informational meeting before the process starts,” Huff-Jones said.

She noted the pre-session will be called “Redistricting 101- A Beginners Course” and will typically occur one month prior.

“The intent is to allay concerns about the process and to clearly define the process used in changing attendance boundaries,” Huff-Jones said.

A video detailing the process will be developed, and Fulton planning staff will attend board member community meetings prior to any future redistrictings to answer questions.

While longtime parents of students in North Fulton schools are familiar with attendance zone adjustments, new parents will have fewer opportunities to go through the process.

Huff-Jones said there are no planned rezonings in North Fulton at this time, including any tweaks of boundaries.

Redistricting generally occurs when new high schools come on line, or when population changes impact enrollment.

The only high school planned in North Fulton in the next five years is the STEM high school in downtown Alpharetta.

That school will have open boundaries which will not impact existing attendance zones.

NORTH FULTON, Ga. – The National Merit Scholarship program has named 128 students as semifinalists this year – more than any other school system in the state. Northview High School, with 45 seniors selected as semifinalist had the most students on the list.

These 128 students will continue in the national competition for more than 7, 500 Merit Scholarship awards valued at $31 million. This is the first round of competition for the program, with finalists named in February and scholarship winners announced in April.

Congregation breaks ground on meetinghouse ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Mayor Jim Gilvin joined area leaders of The ​Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Sept. 8 for a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the congregation’s new meetinghouse (church) at Union Hill and Windward Concourse in Alpharetta.

Church officials report the denomination is experiencing substantial membership growth in North Georgia, and the new building will allow for needed expansion. Church leaders Elder Rene Alba of the Seventy and Roswell Georgia Stake President Verne Ernst spoke at the ceremony.

“Tithes and other charitable donations help the Church carry out its mission of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, caring for the poor, and strengthening members’ faith and commitment to Jesus Christ,” Ernst told the crowd of around 100 attendees. “Additionally, and importantly for our purposes here today, tithing funds the construction and maintenance of church facilities. All meetinghouses are paid for before construction begins.”

The 18,000 square foot structure will include a chapel for religious services on Sundays seating between 200 and 300 people. It also will house classrooms, offices, a small church library, a kitchen and a cultural hall with an indoor basketball court that can also be used for musical productions.

The location will feature a Family History Center, free to the public, for the purpose of genealogical research.

When completed next year, the building will provide a home to a number of congregations (referred to as Wards) in the immediate area. Members attend church

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the fourth largest denomination in the United States, and with more than 16 million members worldwide, it constructs between 300 and 400 buildings each year.

The church buildings are also used for community service during times of natural disasters, such as in

the 2017 flooding in Houston.

“When completed the signage for this meetinghouse will say ‘The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – Visitors Welcome.’ And we really mean that,” Ernst said. “We hope many of our new neighbors and friends will visit, socialize, play and worship with us here.”

Roswell Council outlines expectations for partner organizations Officials also defer vote setting sidewalk widths

On Sept. 10, the City Council unanimously passed a resolution stating what information and documentation partner organizations, such as Roswell Inc and the Roswell Historic Beautification Project, must provide to the city for public record.

The information includes: • The organization’s formal name and any other aliases it uses • The type of organization and whether or not it is a nonprofit • The names of the officers and board of directors • The organization’s mission • The organization’s overall goals it plans to achieve by partnering with the city • The work the organization expects to accomplish in the coming fiscal year • A marking plan • The most recent audit and/or finan-

cial statement Councilman Marcelo Zapata first brought up the city’s lack of standards for partner organizations earlier this summer while the council was going through the budget process for fiscal year 2019.

While going through the list of additions and deletions for the city’s budget, Zapata opposed several additional funds for partner organizations, which still eventually passed despite his vote, stating that he wanted more accountability and transparency from these organizations.

Councilman Mike Palermo joined Zapata, stating that he liked the new measure because it “increased transparency and accountability” with these organizations and the city.

Speakers from the public likewise said they supported the initiative because finding information on partner organizations in the past has been difficult.

“It’s taken too long for this to go through,” one resident said.

The resolution passed unanimously.

In other action at the Sept. 10 meeting, the council deferred voting on a text amendment to the Unified Development

Palermo said his goal, with this amendment, is to increase walkability and connections throughout the city.

The new 8-foot requirement would allow pedestrians, bicyclists and golf carts to share the path.

Staff decided on the 8-foot width because it is the legal definition of a multiuse trail, said Director of Transportation Steve Acenbrak.

Councilman Matt Judy said he is not necessarily opposed to the proposed amendment, but he sought a deferral to see the amendment more fleshed out and to discuss the roads it would affect.

Palermo agreed to a two-week deferral, but the council vote ended in a tie, with Palermo, Judy and Zapata in favor of deferral. Mayor Lori Henry acted as the tie-breaker and voted to defer it until the next council meeting.

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Rivalries can be founded on many factors, including proximity, the familiarity of two teams slugging it out for decades or a history of thrilling wins and heartbreaking losses. The Milton and Roswell rivalry includes all those factors, but Friday night’s contest will undoubtedly continue the love to hate sentiment between the schools.

Roswell erased a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter and scored with just five seconds remaining to down their bitter foes in electrifying fashion at Milton.

The Hornets trailed 20-16 with just over two minutes remaining when their defense stopped the Eagles on a thirdand-long in Milton territory to force a punt. The ensuing kick sailed out of bounds just 14 yards beyond the line of scrimmage, setting up the Hornets with a short field and two timeouts in their pocket.

Roswell drove inside the red zone over the next minute but faced a fourthand-4 to keep their comeback hopes alive. Going for the throat, Roswell threw a backward pass to Ryan Pike who then teed up a pass to John Copenhaver in the end zone. The throw fell incomplete, but a pass interference call against Milton gave the Hornets a fresh set of downs.

Two plays later, quarterback Ethan Roberts connected with running back Kamonty Jett inside the 5-yard line. Jett broke a tackle, then broke the hearts of the Milton faithful by scampering into pay dirt with just five ticks remaining on the clock.

But, the drama was not over. After a squib quick gave Milton three seconds to work, the Eagles ran a hook and ladder play.

Dylan Leonard caught the pass and quickly threw a lateral. After another lateral, quarterback Jordan Yates was back in possession and began rushing down the sideline. As he crossed midfield and saw a swarm of Hornets approaching, Yates threw completely across the field to Holden Shaw who ran into the end zone untouched.

Roswell remembers fallen in 9-11 ceremony

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The weather matched the solemn atmosphere Sept. 11 as residents met at the Mike Gann 9-11 Memorial in Roswell Area Park for a memorial service on the 17th anniversary of the terrorist attack on America.

The Roswell Rotary Club once again partnered with the City of Roswell for the service, which included several Roswell dignitaries and dozens of attending residents.

The master of ceremonies was retired radio personality Moby Carney.

The keynote speaker was Travis Ellis, the co-founder of Shepherd’s Men, a volunteer group that works to help rehabilitate veterans with traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. The organization has raised more than $3.2 million so far.

“It should always be too soon for all of us,” Ellis said about 9-11. “Today is a day that should be forever in the fabric of who we are as a people. It is a day to remember, but also a day to challenge ourselves to earn the sacrifice made by so many – to be more, to do more, and to give more.”

Ellis, along with several other speak-

ers recounted where they were that day and emphasized that Americans have an obligation to remember the events of that day.

During the ceremony, representatives laid wreaths in memory of fire, police, civilian and military efforts on 9-11.

“This is something that needs to reside in our hearts and our souls daily, not just one day of the year,” Ellis said.

“We need to be consumed by the fire that is protecting our republic. And we should never rest on the fact that liberty is always guaranteed, because you can look through the course of our history, and it’s not.”

Ellis and his organization strive to raise awareness of the problems of veterans whose ranks are reduced by 22 suicides a day, he said.

His efforts have earned him a Citizen Honors Award, the highest recognition a civilian can receive, for his work with the Shepherd’s Men. “You don’t have to put on the uniform; you don’t have to fire rounds down range; and you sure don’t have to take down a private jetliner to a field,” Ellis said. “But what you have to do is serve. You have to engage in the fight, because we must remain vigilant to be free.”

City further refines code for future North Point development Plan sets theme for revitalization within district

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A framework for major revitalization of Alpharetta’s North Point area could be in place within the next two months.

Alpharetta city leaders met with TSW design consultant Caleb Racicot Sept. 11 for a special workshop to hammer out final details of revised zoning and building requirements for the district.

With two massive mixed-use developments completed over the past 10 years, the city is now turning its focus to North Point, which has suffered sizeable losses recently with the closures of Sears and Toys ‘R’ Us retailers.

“We’re focusing now on the North Point corridor much like the city focused on Avalon and City Center in the past,” Mayor Jim Gilvin said.

Avalon, which opened four years ago, and the nearly completed City Center already have established momentum as commercial and residential attractions.

“We want to continue to make sure that City Center turns out like it needs to and downtown continues to grow and prosper,” Gilvin said. “We still want to make sure Avalon keeps its crown as being a dynamic location. But they’re in different stages now. They have their momentum, while we’ve got to get that momentum started in North Point.”

The focus of the workshop was to put the final touches on codes governing the size, uses and makeup of developments

for North Point.

Much of the discussion revolved around development requirements that fit into a designation for an ecodistrict — an urban planning method that integrates sustainable development and reduces the ecological footprint of projects.

Racicot presented a slate of suggestions governing allowable uses and building sizes for construction in the district.

Suggestions included, for example, setting percentages for the amount of space a building should set aside for community or amenity space. Plans also call for limiting residential-use building sizes to a maximum footprint of 50,000 square feet.

Racicot said the residential codes were meant to fit between the allowances provided at Avalon and at City Center for residential.

The code also suggests limiting density to eight units per acre in most cases.

Most of the discussion at the workshop focused on requirements for open space.

Racicot said the plan is set up with open space requirements in the zoning and the overlays within the district.

For a non-residential development would be required to have at least 5 percent amenity space, things like outdoor dining or a rooftop patio.

City Councilman John Hipes suggested that sliding back the scale for open space requirements on smaller developments might encourage developers to pursue more small tracts to circum-

Community Development Director Kathi Cook said she doubts anyone would take that approach because each property is governed by setback requirements, and that would deter developers from taking a piecemeal approach to building.

Though there was no general consensus among council members, one idea was to apply a uniform percentage devoted to civic or amenity space to all developments, possibly 15 percent. One suggestion was to give smaller properties leeway in how the open space is used, whether for private or public access.

Other areas addressed at the workshop included determining block sizes, which are, for now, set with a perimeter of 1,600 feet.

Following the workshop, the mayor

stressed that property owners will ultimately determine what’s to be built at North Point. The city, he said, is trying to provide some guidelines that follow the North Point Livable Centers Initiative.

“I think the general consensus is we want to be an area at North Point that is walkable, does have the same type of mixed-use development that’s in Avalon or City Center but with a focus more on technology and greenspace – actual living things like trees and grass where people can relax and get away for a little bit,” Gilvin said.

Barring any snags, the updated codes and overlay for the district should be ready to go before the Alpharetta Planning Commission in October, then be considered for City Council approval the following month.

This long stretch of state highway could very well be one of the most nondescript developed roads in North Fulton.

The area was mostly developed in the 1980s when strip malls and contemporary condos were in fashion, and when there was no City of Sandy Springs and every developer with half a pulse got approval for projects from a very distant Fulton County government in downtown Atlanta.

Growing up in Roswell, the only time we really went south of the River on 9 was when my Pop Warner football team traveled to play those Sandy Springs Saints. When I got to high school, because I lived on the East Side of Roswell, I got to attend Crestwood High School.

The school was just south of the river and east of Ga. 9. It was built in the 1970s and put out of its misery in 1991. If you ever saw Crestwood, you’d know what I mean. (The fact that the building was mostly demolished after only 20 years of existence should say something.) It was rebuilt and today is a much-improved Sandy Springs Middle School.

There were great memories there.

It kind of reminds me of the bar in the old movie “Footloose” that they’d go to just outside the city limits so they could dance.

If you are not Ubering to the North River Tavern after midnight, the other reasons you might head down this stretch of road is to avoid Ga. 400 traffic, or to get your tag or driver’s license renewed. A select few of you might also be heading from the Ferrari dealership in Alpharetta down to the Lamborghini dealership.

The area has been largely ignored.

Since becoming a city in 2005, Sandy Springs has had its hands full with organizing a government that suddenly had oversight of more than 105,000 residents and a workforce that includes the headquarters of four Fortune 500 companies, numerous regional headquarters and more than 5,500 businesses. But by a wide margin, most of that is south of Abernathy Road. There is a huge difference between north and south Sandy Springs.

According to a report the city published earlier this year, the median in-

come of residents living in the southern part of the city is $102,960, while those living on the north end earn $57,595.

In a recent article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul said he appointed members of the nonprofit community to the task force to ensure this area remains affordable for those on the lower end of the income ladder. These include “people who work in the restaurants and retail stores, and in landscaping and other jobs that we collectively call the essential economy,” he said. “People working at the hospitals, teachers, police and firefighters, and middle managers in the corporate realm.”

One member of the task force said it will look at ways to incentivize redevelopment that will “change some of the retail development patterns.” The article mentioned Tax Allocation Districts, Community Improvement Districts and new transit improvements that could have a significant impact on this stretch of road.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The haunted house on the corner of South Main Street and Wills Road is making way for a new senior housing community.

The old House on Horror Hill building, a Halloween favorite among residents, was recently demolished to make way for construction on the Village at Wills Park.

The Alpharetta City Council approved the 130-unit project last June on the seven acres that formerly housed the haunted house, a place of worship and a barn.

The project is being developed by

Village Park Senior Living, which has existing branches in Peachtree Corners and on Morris Road in Alpharetta.

The new Wills Road location will offer a “unique, farmhouse-style senior living community” made up of assisted living and memory care.

The developer’s plans include a main building and several single-story cottages and duplexes, as well as an independent living portion. As set forth by one of the conditions, the exteriors of these buildings will be made up of at least 40 percent stone or brick. A bus shelter will likewise be built near the development.

Five oak trees within the property will be preserved.

Appen Media welcomes interns ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Two Milton High School seniors are taking on the role of intern with Appen Media this school year.

Jillian DiMarco is from Alpharetta and hopes to go to Auburn University next year to DiMARCO study journalism and mass communications.

DiMarco is involved in the National Honors Society, student council and is the girls varsity tennis captain.

She said she plans to use her communication skills at her internship, while she masters AP Style and learns techniques that will help her in college and at a future job.

“I wanted to intern with a newspaper because I love to write and wanted to get the hands-on experience,” DiMarco said. “I chose Appen because I live down the street from their office and wanted to be able to have people I know read my

writing.”

Nikaya Glatt, or Nik for short, was born in China, but now resides in Roswell. She wants to attend the University of Georgia or Clemson University next fall.

Glatt is vacillating between a double major GLATT in psychology and literature, or a major in literature with a minor in either business and communications or marketing.

At Milton, Glatt is part of the National Honor Society and the National English Honor Society. She is active in other extracurricular activities outside of school.

“I wanted to intern with a newspaper company because I wanted to broaden my experience of literature with a different type of genre,” Glatt said. “I hope to become a better writer and participate in a little bit of everything before the end of the semester.”

An interview with Dr. Taylor

By Alyssa MacNamera I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Taylor after his 2018 Best of win to ask him about his recent success.

As we sit in the bright, clean, welcoming waiting room of Premier Dermatology, Dr. Taylor is holding his newborn son, his third boy, only 15 days old. He apologizes for the squeaks of the sleeping baby and smiles apologizing when those squeaks interrupt our interview.

After speaking with him for an hour, I am well aware of the reasons for his renown. He is warm, instantly calming, respectful and shockingly intelligent.

Despite having a youthful face that, at first glance, might make you question his experience, his knowledge and surgical ability are well established: both are touted in patient reviews and displayed in a vast surgical portfolio. He is loved and respected by his patients and his staff, and it is easy to see why. He is, to say the least, a genuine individual and accomplished physician.

Congratulations on winning both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist of North Atlanta! As a new practice, it is quite an honor to win these titles, let alone winning Best Vein Specialist 2 years in a row. To what do you attribute to your success?

Dr. Taylor: Well thank you very much! You’re right. It is an honor to win and I am extremely appreciative of the accolade.

I am very fortunate to live and work in an area that has exceptional healthcare including outstanding dermatologists and remarkable Mohs surgeons.

Moreover, residents of North Fulton are smart consumers, who do their research on their potential physicians. Given this, I truly value the confidence that my patients have placed in me.

I don’t have any hidden secret to Premier Dermatology’s success per se. I have been trained by exceptional physicians and I work with exceptional people. I strive to always be patient-centered, to put the patient first, to read up, perform extra research for my patients and advocate for them. Quality controls, back-up systems and patient care processes are an area of special interest for me. I have been an airplane pilot for over ten years, and I believe the strategies for safety and quality that aviation emphasizes have translated into improved processes within my own practice.

But most importantly, I really owe so much to our amazing staff! Given that we are a small practice with only 7 staff members, I am beyond thankful for their expertise, compassion and the concern that they have for our patients.

We spend a lot of time together given our 10 to 12 hour work days, so it is invaluable that we all get along and not only like our jobs but strive to excel and improve our processes. We’ve been open 18 months now and are constantly Dr. Taylor trying to improve wherever we can. I think that’s part of our success: patients recognize our genuine concern and commitment to excellence.

Is there something you feel sets yourself apart from the other physicians in the area?

Dr. Taylor: Actually I do believe I spend an unusual amount of time with my patients. As a procedural dermatologist, I am used to a smaller volume of patients with longer visits so that translates over to my general dermatology patients. (With a laugh) Granted sometimes that means my schedule runs behind, but ultimately our patients leave knowing that they received thorough, high quality care. And I appreciate the understanding my patients show me, because I think that they can tell that if I am running behind that it is because I chose to give a prior patient the time he or she needed rather than run on schedule.

Regarding Mohs surgery and vein care, my fellowship covered multiple aspects of surgical dermatology, so I feel that I am able to address some of the extra concerns that patients may have that would otherwise be referred out to other specialists, and I perform these services at the level you would expect from someone who is fellowship-trained and board-certified. For example, I can treat medically significant vein disease with various procedures such as laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy then, once resolved, clear up the cosmetic vein issues with sclerotherapy or laser treatments. I am also one of the only physicians in Georgia with the ability to cure melanoma with true Mohs surgery. In general, these would be treated by different specialists or would be treated using non-equivalent techniques.

Anything else you’d like to say?

Dr. Taylor: I really just want to say thank you very much! Thank you to our staff: you are valued and wonderful and we wouldn’t be continuing to excel without each and every one of you! My staff and I often run into former patients and parents around town as we live, work, and play in the area.

Our first office was located where the Avalon is now, so we’ve seen the area transform from a small town into a bustling metropolis. We moved to our current location on North Point Parkway in 1996. Many of our earliest patients are now bringing in their own kids. I always get a kick out of showing the current teen patients the pictures and even models of their mom and dad’s teeth way back when. In some cases, we have treated 3 generations of the same family. We are so thankful for the loyal following that we have received over the years.

We also want to thank our patients for voting us “best” orthodontic office for the last five years! You don’t win many awards after high school, so it is

a great honor to be recognized. We have seen over 22,000 new patients over the years, so we have a little head start.

Experience counts, and we have a lot of that. Because we take before and after photos on each and every patient, we have a huge portfolio of different orthodontic problems and treatment options. So no matter what your smile looks like, we have seen something similar or worse! We can show you the before and after photos of someone else’s treatment that had a situation that is similar to your situation. With the help of these visual aids, we can help you visualize the treatment outcome and the options.

Since most orthodontic treatments only last for a year or two, we have to have a whole new set of patients every two years. Thank you to all the patient’s who have referred friends and neighbors over the years. We truly appreciate your recommendation.

Is the question we hear most frequently” says co-owner Peter Schnieper, “and the answer is always yes. We’re real general contractors and we have the electrical, structural, and carpentry resources to move any wall” The company uses a staff of certified designers to render the reinvented home with state of the art, mini super computers. “It’s so wonderful to see the homeowner’s eyes light up when they see the re-designed space” says John Hogan, “it’s like they get validation of what they’ve been imagining for the past 10 years”. They never proceeded with the project because no company could show them that it could be done.

Hogan continues “homeowners get so excited about how beautiful it’s going to look and they’re even more excited about how easy it was.”

To deliver this enormous amount of inspiration and design support to hundreds of homeowners per year, Remodeling Expo Center built an impressive Design Center where customers can interact with the company’s profession-

Get ready to ‘party like it’s illegal’ Oct. 13

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — It’s almost time to party like its 1920 again. The Georgia Ensemble Theatre is hosting its firstever speakeasy, with 1920s attire highly encouraged, to help raise funds for its programs and shows.

And in true speakeasy fashion, Bob’s Hooch House & Speakeasy location and the password to get in is secret. They will be revealed only to ticketholders 48 hours beforehand.

And ticket buyers can be assured that while the exact location cannot be revealed yet, the party will be held somewhere within a 10-mile radius of the Georgia Ensemble Theatre at 950 Forrest St. in Roswell.

Those who join on Oct. 13, starting at 7 p.m., will be treated to a slew of specialty speakeasy cocktails and buffet items from several local restaurants and breweries, including 1920 Tavern, Lucia’s Italian Restaurant, Vino 100, Osteria Mattone, The Whiskey Project and Alpine Bakery.

And of course, no speakeasy experi-

ence would be complete without live jazz music, games, performances and a “black market” auction filled with goods and experiences, such as concert and travel tickets.

“We’re encouraging people to dress up for this – flappers, gangsters, and the like,” said Georgia Ensemble Theatre Director of Marketing Michael Van Osch.

“And we’re going to party like it’s illegal.”

In the past several years, the Georgia Ensemble Theatre has held an annual fundraiser that was usually structured as a dinner mystery theatre or some sort of performance. But this year, organizers decided they wanted to do something “totally different” and interactive.

The speakeasy concept, Osch said, got people “very excited.”

“We know that these are really popu-

lar whenever they are done,” Osch said.

“But we’ve never seen one done here.”

It is named and in honor of local theatre icon and the Georgia Ensemble Theatre co-founder Robert “Bob” J. Farley, who unexpectedly died at age 69 last November.

Already, ticket sales are going very well, and the theatre is considering repeating the event next year, Osch said.

Proceeds from the event will support the Georgia Ensemble Theatre’s productions, classes, camps and keeping the arts alive in North Fulton.

This year will be the theatre’s 26th anniversary, and this season will include shows like “9 to 5 the Musical,” “I loved, I lost, I Made Spaghetti,” “Moonlight & Magnolias,” “Driving Miss Daisy” and “Bullets over Broadway, the Musical.”

Tickets for the speakeasy are $125 each and include food, drink and activities. There are a limited number of tickets available, so anyone who wants to join is urged to purchase them soon before they sell out.

Alpharetta gears up for Brew Moon Festival Sept. 29 Popular event follows annual Scarecrow Harvest ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Downtown Alpharetta will be the place to be Sept. 29 when the Alpharetta Business Association stages one of the year’s biggest festivals.

The fall Brew Moon Fest regularly draws crowds in the thousands who come to enjoy live entertainment, dancing, wine, food, and of course brews. Organizers have estimated crowds in recent years at between 8,000 and 10,000.

The Brew Moon Fest has become a not-to-be-missed event every fall and spring for the downtown area. The event will run from 6:30 to 11 p.m. on Milton Avenue which will be closed to traffic for the event. Jekyll Brewing is once again providing a variety of beers and wines.

“The Brew Moon Fest started in 2012 and is growing and becoming more popular each year,” said Alpharetta Business Association President Peg Hussing. “There’s nothing like it in downtown Alpharetta. If you’re interested in attending, reserve your spot soon – especially for tables which sell out quickly.”

Several bands are booked to perform, including: KRP and Band X. The cost of Brew Moon Fest is $10 per entry fee, $100 for a table of six, and $130 for a table of eight.

Beer and wine costs $5 and there will be light fare for sale.

You can bring your own chair, but backpacks are not allowed.

Alpharetta Presbyterian Church announces new associate pastor

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta Presbyterian Church recently welcomed Anne Fyffe as the new Associate Pastor for Youth and Young Adults.

Fyffe is a recent graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey, and her undergraduate degree in Community Organization and Civic Engagement came from The Ohio State University.

Ollie Wagner, the church’s senior pastor, said the church hopes that Fyffe’s work of supporting and serving teens and young adults will not only benefit the church, but the community at large as well.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Two women reported their car had been burglarized Sept. 9 while they were at work at the Hyatt Place on Medlock Bridge Road.

The women said they had parked the vehicle at 3:30 p.m. About 30 minutes later, a co-worker alerted them that the driver’s side rear window was broken.

Two purses, worth a combined $200, were taken. Also taken was an iPhone X, valued at $1,000, and an iPod, valued at $50.

MILTON, Ga. — Police are searching for a woman suspected of stealing a Milton Target employee’s credit cards and cell phone while the employee tried on clothes after clocking out.

The store employee said after her shift ended on Sept. 9, she decided to shop for clothes before leaving the store.

She left the fitting room to select another size from the sales floor, but when she returned, she found another woman in the fitting room with her potential purchases and her personal belongings, including her purse.

The employee asked the woman if she could have her things, but the suspect threw the clothes over the fitting room door.

At this time, the employee noticed her purse, which had been in the fitting room when she left, was on a nearby desk.

The victim said she did not open her purse after picking it up from the desk and continued to shop for 15 to 20 minutes. When she reached the checkout line, she discovered her wallet and

Car window smashed, purse snatched at work

Samsung S5 cell phone were missing.

The wallet contained five credit cards.

The employee said she briefly saw the suspect and described her as a “dark-skinned female” between 30- and 60-years old wearing a green T-shirt and an unknown color ball cap.

The victim said she cancelled all the credit cards immediately, and officers advised her to closely monitor her credit to detect any fraudulent activity.

Police were in the process of obtaining security footage at the time of the report.

Thieves make off with 30 car batteries MILTON, Ga. — Two men are suspected of stealing 30 used car batteries from the Milton Walmart after midnight on Sept. 11.

Police received a call that afternoon regarding the theft. An employee with the store said the batteries were stolen from the “battery cage” around 1:30 a.m. and that the cage was pried open without disturbing the lock.

Surveillance footage showed a dark Honda Accord pass in front of the building to the rear. Two men are seen walking up to the battery storage area before one of the suspects backs the car up to the cage. Footage, which did not show the rear of the car or the cage, showed the vehicle driving off “shortly after.”

According to the report, both men were wearing white shorts and a black shirt. One of the suspects appears to be black while the other was either white or Hispanic.

Cameras did reveal the Accord’s license plate, which is owned by a woman from Norcross.

Woman’s purse stolen during gym workout JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek woman called police Sept. 5 after her car window was smashed and some items were stolen from her car while she was at the Lifetime Fitness on Johns Creek Parkway.

The woman had parked her car, a white 2015 Lexus RX450, at 11 a.m. in the parking lot.

An hour and a half later, she returned to find that the right rear window was shattered.

Her purse, valued at $500, was missing.

While police were speaking to her, the woman received a text alert from her bank that her credit card used fraudulently in a nearby Kroger.

Store employees described the suspects as a black man wearing a white T-shirt and blue shorts, and a white woman with long, brown hair wearing a green shirt.
