Vehicle reported stolen from outside residence ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police were called to Gramercy Lane Aug. 6 after a teenager’s car was reported stolen from outside his friend’s house.

Police met with the teenage boy and his father at the Gramercy Park subdivision, who told them the boy parked his

Woman alleges assault by hospice care worker ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman called police Aug. 6 alleging a hospice care worker beat her son and stole jewelry from her home the week before.

The woman told police an employee from a hospice care service was at her residence the afternoon of July 28 taking care of her son, who has since passed away.

As the caretaker was leaving the residence, he allegedly told the woman her son almost fell out of bed, but he caught him before he hit the ground. When the caretaker left, the woman went to check on her son and noticed several bruises on his face, legs and hands, which she suspected may have been delivered by the caretaker.

A couple of days following the visit, the mother said she noticed two rings, with a combined value of approximately $2,500, were missing from her home.

The woman said she had no photos of the bruises on her son, and the body was cremated. She told police she would like to press charges against the worker.

Woman falls victim to rental home scam ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta

car in the street out in front his friends’ house at 10 p.m. the night before. When he left the house and went to go to his car at 9 a.m. the next morning, the vehicle was gone.

The teen had left his wallet, keys, and two sets of golf clubs in the car, according to police.

The woman told police she saw an advertisement for the Bayberry Drive, Cumming, house on the Zillow website and contacted the listed real estate agent to inquire about renting.

After visiting the property on Aug. 4, the woman contacted the agent again and let him know she wanted to rent the house. She filled out the paperwork, which she returned to the agent via email, and sent a deposit and rent money, a total of $1,765, to the agent through an app.

She was scheduled to meet with the real estate agent Aug. 6 at her new home to receive the keys, but when she arrived, she found the house already occupied and no sign of the real estate agent. She tried to contact the agent, but his phone had been disconnected.

Woman’s name used in unemployment filing MILTON, Ga. — A Milton woman called police Aug. 3 after she discovered someone had used her identity while filing for unemployment benefits from the state.

The woman told police she was alerted to the fraud by her company’s human resources department, who reached out earlier in the day regarding a claim she had filed for state unemployment. According to the woman’s employer, someone used her name and information to file for the benefits.

The woman told her employer and police she has worked for the company for 20 years and is still employed there,

DUI and Drug Arrests Bernabe Resendiz-Martinez, 21, of Karr Road, Cumming, was arrested Aug. 2 on Ga. 400 for DUI-alcohol per se and DUI-less safe.

David Wendell Pippen, 34, of Harmony Court, Milton, was arrested Aug. 7 on Deerfield Parkway for DUI and failure to maintain lane.

Victoria Lynn Turner, 24, of Phillips Court, Monroe, was arrested Aug. 8 on Ga. 400 for DUI. Jennifer Lauren Dunaway, 39, of Reserve Drive, Brookhaven was arrested Aug. 2 on Holcomb Bridge Road for DUI-less safe and failure to yield while turning left. and she did not file for any unemployment.

Police advised the woman to notify the Federal Trade Commission of the fraudulent activity, freeze her credit and contact the state unemployment office.

Injured deer put down in resident’s backyard ROSWELL, Ga. — Police were called to Old Path Crossing Aug. 2 after a homeowner reported an injured deer in their backyard.

When police arrived, they said they found a deer hanging over the metal fence with a broken leg. After speaking with a police supervisor, the officer received permission to put down the injured deer with his handgun.

Dispatch called Public Works to remove the deer.

Coalition forms to render aid Feel Beautiful Today – to families Honors Healthcare Heroes in Atlanta PAID ADVERTISEMENT

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A coalition of cities, the county, businesses and charities are working with Fulton County Schools to develop an aid system for children and parents affected by the shutdown of classrooms this term.

Fulton County Schools announced late last month that it was scrapping plans to offer students a choice of online or in-person instruction. The district said it would provide remote learning only, at least through Labor Day. The decision was a curve ball for those families without teleworking options.

Alpharetta Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard said the coalition is barely two weeks old, but it has already mapped out plans to fill gaps because of the school system’s decision.

He said members of the City Council challenged city staff last spring to explore ways they could support local families with education assistance.

Part of that effort came to fruition Aug. 10 when the city signed an agreement with the Ed Isakson YMCA to provide a virtual learning site for schoolaged children in the local community.

Overall, the partnership will service about 250 children at three sites, the City of Alpharetta Adult Activity Center at North Park, Alpharetta Arts Center and Preston Ridge Community Center at the Y. The YMCA is also partnering with other metro cities and agencies to operate similar sites.

Beginning Aug. 24, the Alpharetta YMCA will host children from K-6th grade. The city will host a micro-learning center for up to 50 kids in the 7th and

Johns Creek pushes forward with McGinnis Ferry funding Alpharetta, Forsyth County on board to help with costs

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Improvements to a major east-west corridor moved closer to the starting gate Aug. 10 when Johns Creek officials advanced plans to add two lanes to a 5-mile stretch of McGinnis Ferry Road.

At its bimonthly work session at City Hall, Johns Creek City Council members agreed to push forward a measure that calls for additional funding for the project.

Formal adoption is set for consideration possibly later this month.

It’s a major step for a road project that has languished for more than five years as cost estimates have ballooned.

Originally estimated at around $35 million, widening 4.7 miles of McGinnis Ferry Road from Sargent Road in Johns Creek to Union Hill Road in Alpharetta now carries a projected price tag of $60 million. Each city shares about 2.3 miles of the stretch with Forsyth County on the north.

Both Johns Creek and Alpharetta originally committed $4.9 million from transportation sales tax (TSPLOST) funds back in 2016. Earlier this year, they upped their contributions to $5.9 million.

The new agreement increases each city’s contribution to $8.9 million. Forsyth County, which originally pledged $18 million when the project was first

proposed in 2015, has upped its share to $23 million.

The state plans to kick in almost $20 million. The project is of major significance to GDOT because it is already underway with projects to add McGinnis Ferry exits off I-85 in Gwinnett County and farther west on Ga. 400 that will make the corridor even more inviting for commuters.

Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker said having a major east-west corridor at the northern edge of the city could divert a tremendous amount of traffic now tying up major arteries farther south.

“I think it’s important that we keep this moving forward, and I hope you will support it,” Bodker told the council.

City Councilman Lenny Zaprowski said that while he appreciates the significance of the project, he was still not clear how a 5-mile project can nearly double in cost from its original estimates over five years.

Brian O’Connor, the city’s TSPLOST manager, said original estimates were made in 2016, based on a generally accepted estimate for lane additions of about $6 million per mile. But the estimates failed to consider two bridges along the route that will require widening, and the estimates for right of way acquisitions were woefully low, he said.

Alpharetta approved the agreement July 20. Forsyth County has yet

to formally adopt the pact, but county commissioners gave a preliminary nod at their work session Aug. 11.

O’Connor also told council members that the city’s extra share could be made up through a $1 million grant from the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank and by transferring another $2 million from other TSPLOST projects. That does not include a possible $1 million in extra expense for sound abatement measures for Johns Creek neighborhoods affected by the increased traffic.

Construction on the first phases of the project – in Johns Creek that’s from Seven Oaks to Sargent Road – is expected to begin early in 2021, O’Connor said.

A formal council vote to adopt the agreement is slated for the next meeting, Aug. 24.

Cities mount fight against Fulton over COVID relief funds

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Cities are waging a fight with Fulton County over its proposed distribution of federal COVID relief money.

At stake is more than $100 million in federal aid to compensate local governments for extra expenses related to the pandemic.

Fulton County received $104 million in federal aid dollars this spring to distribute to 14 of the 15 cities within its borders. The City of Atlanta received its own award directly from the federal government.

The money was part of the $2.2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act that passed Congress and was signed into law by President Trump in March.

Fulton County has proposed distributing $2.5 million of its award to the 14 cities. That’s a little over 2 percent of the total it received.

Roswell City Attorney David Davidson said all the cities are joining to press for a more equitable distribution.

He pointed out that, except for a small area along Fulton Industrial Boulevard, all of Fulton County’s population lies within cities. It is the cities, he said, that have born the major brunt of extra expenses in public safety and admin-

istrative operations stemming from the health crisis.

“That’s not to say that Fulton County isn’t providing any services, because they are,” he said. “They have the Health Department and other services that they do provide, but the cities have a lot of expenses due to the COVID that were not budgeted for last year.”

Fulton County wasted little time spending the money it received through CARES. In early April, it committed more than $13 million to nonprofits serving the homeless and providing meals to the disadvantaged.

In July, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners set aside $1.5 million to create the Virtual Arts Initiative for individual artists and nonprofit arts organizations adversely affected by the health crisis.

Roswell Councilman Matthew Tyser said he hopes the cities and county can come to an understanding before legal action progresses.

“I’m always troubled when one part of government sues another part of gov-

ernment because we’re basically using up citizen moneys,” Tyser said. “I’m hoping that everyone will come to the table and work through this.”

Other North Fulton cities will consider joining the coalition in the coming weeks.

Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker said he plans to ask the City Council to approve the agreement at their next meeting.

“As you may or may not realize, Fulton is the last county to receive direct funding that has not been able to come to an acceptable agreement with its cities,” he said. “To date, Fulton has only been able to share about 2 percent of the funds it received with its cities. This is completely unacceptable and not in keeping with the guidance provided by the state.”

Milton officials were scheduled to consider the item at their meeting this week.

Alpharetta had a meeting scheduled for this week, but that session has been canceled.

Rotaries partner to expand learning opportunities ROSWELL, Ga. — What began as a conversation to help the kids at HomeStretch have better access to educational resources through new laptops, turned into the first-of-its-kind Rotary Learning Lab. The Rotary Clubs of Roswell, North Fulton and Milton partnered to receive a $10,000 grant from Rotary District 6900 to provide the seed funding for the lab.

In addition to the grant funds, countless partners in the trades provided everything from design, materials and construction to electrical, HVAC and interiors. The total value of the project tops $100,000.

The Rotary Learning Lab will allow HomeStretch to expand its educational programs for youth and adults. Currently, students have tutoring available, but

it is located at a remote site that can be hard for kids to visit when their parents are at work. The Rotary Learning Lab provides a place for students and tutors to meet right in their neighborhood.

Students will be able to attend school in the lab so their parents can continue to work.

The uses for the Rotary Learning Lab will expand from there, allowing HomeStretch to write new grant requests for additional educational programs.

Founded in 1993, HomeStretch has been guiding working homeless families toward increased self-reliance and stability. The organization provides supportive housing and programs that equip working families to regain and sustain permanent housing.

We are all in uncharted territory trying to figure out what we are dealing with in this pandemic. It reminds me of Plato’s parable of the blind men and the elephant. What we know and understand depends on which part of the elephant we have touched, so our understanding evolves each day with each experience, and it is different for each one of us.

To a limited degree, time and history are teachers we can turn to for help. From a business point of view, we recall past recessions and past economic

malaise. The world financial crash of 2008 felt like the end of the economic world as we knew it. For months, there was absolutely no end in sight. Everything just kept getting worse. The event was catastrophic, uncontrollable, and felt like a runaway locomotive barreling down the track at 100 miles per hour.

But it passed. Somehow, we kept going because we collectively — worldwide — pulled together and did what was necessary to survive.

On a local level, I recall that we had to take drastic measures. We made big cuts everywhere we could and shut down our prized new paper that we had worked so hard to launch and which was beginning to thrive — the Gwinnett Herald. But we did what we had to and kept moving forward one step at a time, one day at a time.

It was the same thing a few years prior to the great financial crisis, during yet another recession. This one cost us our business newspaper, The Business Post, and our Lake Lanier Herald which was delivered across three counties around the lake. I remember that vividly because I was the one driving and delivering most of those papers each week.

Time travels in great repeating arcs.

So, when I heard that the pandemic was taking the newest news competitor in our market out of the game — they were shutting down — I was not surprised. Initially when they announced their entry into our market, I remember wondering what they were thinking. This is one of the most competitive markets in the country. How could they miss that?

I also recall speculating about how I would feel if, in fact, they didn’t make it.

I had anticipated that I would feel possibly validated or relieved or something like that, but when I heard the news, I only felt introspective and a sense of loss.

“No one should ever feel good because someone else feels bad.“ While doing more with less is now the order of the day for business in general, it has been the marquee business model for newspapers for at least a decade. This pandemic is just making it worse.

Area food pantry reopens for guided in-store sales Charity also assists with school supplies

ROSWELL, Ga. — North Fulton Community Charities Food Pantry is back in operation with modified in-store service to those in need.

After four and a half months of operating without the volunteers and on an appointment or drive-thru basis only, the pantry, located at 11270 Elkins Road in Roswell, has established new protocols that limit the number of people in the building.

Masks and temperature checks are required, and the charity will continue stringent cleaning routines.

The charity has a short YouTube video that explains the new protocols. The video is available at youtube.com/watch ?v=PbFna2cdDFw&feature=youtu.be “NFCC has continued to operate the food pantry during the pandemic.” said NFCC Executive Director Holly York.

“However, families had transportation issues and challenges picking up during an assigned specific window. By reopening the pantry, our families can come when it works for their schedule.”

York said the number of requests for assistance the charity received doubled after COVID-19 began shutting down businesses in mid-March. She said the charity has provided more than $675,000 in financial assistance for housing from March to July in addition to operating a food pantry for hundreds of local families.

“As the numbers for this virus continue to climb and with many businesses remaining closed or operating with reduced hours, we expect this crisis to continue well into the fall,” York said.

“As eviction courts reopen and unemployment runs out, we anticipate that we will see another spike in the need for

assistance.”

North Fulton Community Charities was forced to cancel both of its major in-person fundraisers this year due to the virus. Last year, those fundraisers raised over $200,000.

“Financial donations are the best way to support NFCC right now because they allow us the flexibility to make your donations go further, faster,” York said.

The nonprofit also reported recently that its annual Back to School program distributed backpacks filled with school supplies to more than 900 children this year. The Back to School program presented by CAS Group and Northside Hospital serves local families in need.

“In spite of a global pandemic, our community really came together this year to provide underserved children in our community with the tools they need to succeed during the school year,” said Program Coordinator Jacquie Tracy. “We were overwhelmed with the outpouring of supplies and financial donations for this year’s program.”

Triton Claim Management, LexisNexis Risk Solutions, JM Family Enterprises and State Farm Agent Celia Sandoval were also sponsors for NFCC’s Back to School program. The space for the program was donated by the Hubert Realty Company.

North Fulton Community Charities will soon kick off its Holiday Program that encompasses multiple events including Warm Coat Day and Thanksgiving Food in November; a Sponsored Families program and Santa Shop in December; and Senior Baskets in November and December.

Founded in 1983, North Fulton Community Charities serves as a human services agency dedicated to building self-sufficiency and preventing homelessness and hunger for residents in North Fulton in the cities of Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, Mountain Park and Roswell. The nonprofit assists families with basic essentials such as food, rent and utilities and clothing for short- term emergencies. Adult education classes ranging from GED Prep and English to Financial Literacy and OSHA Certification are offered at no cost to help create a path to self-sufficiency for their clients. NFCC serves nearly 10,000 individuals and over 4,000 families each year.

Here’s to adapting your entire meeting platform Toastmasters adapts to new online forum

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — You’ve got to hand it to those who turn lemons into lemonade.

CHAT Toastmasters of Alpharetta faced some pretty yellow fruit when the pandemic struck this spring, forcing them to cancel in-person meetings. So, how do you practice public speaking, much less draw a good laugh, with no audience in front of you?

You get good online.

“The whole gist of the organization is to help people achieve through effective evaluations with whatever they’re doing,” said Scott Hoehn, CHAT Toastmasters vice president for membership. “It’s in all the Fortune 500 companies now. The Coca Cola club, The Sparkling Speakers is the name of their club. They find that it’s really built for leadership now.”

While not limited to business professionals, Toastmasters draws its share of members from the corporate world, businesses that promote effective speaking skills among their employees. There are close to two dozen Toastmasters chapters in north Metro Atlanta, each with from 15 to 50 members.

In a typical meeting, there are two or three assigned speakers who give short, five to seven-minute talks on any subject they choose, following the guidance of the many program materials provided

by Toastmasters International. Those programs range from humorous talks, speeches to inform, persuade, entertain, motivate and more.

After the talk, the speaker receives a short evaluation, stressing the strengths they have as well as a thought or two on how they might improve. Some members say their club gives them a “bomb-shelter” where they can try out new material, say a sales pitch, before presenting it to their company or a client “Aside from building self-confidence, it helps them in their community roles,” said Hoehn, who is a past district gover-

nor for the organization.

CHAT Toastmasters President Christian Dixon said she was urged by her employer, Nielsen, to join the club. She brought on co-worker Madelyn Michels later.

“Our company actually believes in it since we’re both in sales-oriented or client-service roles,” Dixon said.

The skills learned and honed through Toastmasters, she said, are even more

important now that the business world has turned to online meetings. The same communication skills needed to succeed online can only be enhanced with the kind of coaching you receive from Toastmasters brethren, she said.

“Now, we’re really understanding how to use the camera better, hand expressions and where to look,” Dixon said.

“Working on some of the skills have really helped us all.”

Michels agreed the lessons learned in public speaking have helped her career.

“I participated in one meeting, and I just fell in love,” she said. “I always was very conscious of how I spoke to people, especially when I landed this new role at Nielsen. I was very conscious of how I talked to clients.”

Now, she said, she speaks with more confidence. The club has sharpened her skills in reading people, grammar usage and pronunciation.

As far as humor, Hoehn seems to be the critics’ choice. In his last talk, he applied a screen background that put him aboard a commuter bus. He even raised an arm to mimic holding onto a strap.

Daniel Schwartz, public relations director for CHAT Toastmasters, said it’s easy to join any club. He suggests going to the toastmasters.org website to find a nearby location that seems to fit your interests. Fees are around $50 for six months, he said.

“You can try out as many clubs as you wish,” he said.

In normal times, CHAT Toastmasters meets at Serindipity Labs on North Point Center East. Meetings are now held on Zoom.

more arriving daily. There are so many incredibly talented reporters available and hungry to write — to be productive, to contribute, to have a reason to get up in the morning.

According to son Carl, about a third of all the reporters in the United States now work for two companies —The New York Times and Washington Post. That is, two newspapers now employ a third of the universe of “all” working reporters. That is something so dark to me. It feels ominous.

It feels threatening. But I’m a news guy.

“Aren’t we all in some way though, news guys?

As I approach the end of this column, maybe I am feeling a different part of Plato’s elephant. It occurs to me that “doing more with less” maybe isn’t just limited to business. Maybe it better applies — with a twist — to everybody’s life in general right now.

“Doing more with less” may more accurately mean “living differently,” as opposed to “doing more,” and the “less” may not so much refer to available resources as much as our current circumstance — “less structure, less security, less closure, and, um, less freedom.”

We shall have to wait and see for that answer.

The Alpharetta Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department has also developed programs for a “virtual after-school.”

Department Director Morgan Rodgers said the programming will be offered in the afternoon. Another program is called “After School Fun Stop,” available for parents to drop off K-6 children off at 2:30 and pick them up by 6:30. Dance and gymnastics programs are also being offered.

The agreement also states that cleaning and safety protocols will be in place at all facilities. It also provides for a charge of $39 per day, per child.

Drinkard also told the council of another, broader initiative aimed at aiding children and parents. At the council’s urging, he said, city staff began contacting area cities, businesses, nonprofits and schools to devise a plan that would render assistance where it is needed most.

Drinkard said the initiative is not just aimed at working parents but will assist vulnerable students as well.

“For the vulnerable students, oftentimes the schools are their safe place,” Drinkard said. “That’s where they may get their only meal. We don’t think bout North Fulton that way, but it’s here. It may be the only place that they get their daily

bath or shower. It may be the only place where they receive positive reinforcement.”

Meetings among city and school officials and business leaders began barely two weeks ago, Drinkard said, and already major progress has been made. Three days after the first meeting, Comcast stepped up to help fill in any gaps in internet service.

United Way has also developed a special website focused on North Fulton to provide a complete catalog of the services being offered. Drinkard said the website should be up and running in the coming days. Meanwhile, he said, information will be posted on the city’s website, alpharetta.ga.us.

Drinkard emphasized the initiative is being set up to address the current crisis but with a vision for long-term service. The need in the community will continue to some extent even after COVID subsides, he said.

Councilman Jason Binder said that while the students’ and parents’ needs are being addressed, the coalition might want to look at support services for some of the area’s senior residents.

“There’s just a lot of isolation going on, and I’m glad that you all are responding,” Binder said.

Mayor Jim Gilvin said he was overwhelmed by the progress the coalition has made in a short time.

“I had no idea some of this had even occurred, because it’s happened since the last time I talked to you all four days ago,” he said. “It’s remarkable to watch this community come together when challenged.”

Fulton School District postpones fall sports until Sept. 14

14, a ruling that will affect the crosscountry, softball, volleyball and football seasons.

In a statement, the district said it will continue to monitor the impacts of COVID-19 and decide on the remainder of the season by Sept. 14.

the marching band to continue practice and condition[ing] through this time.”

The move pushes back the volleyball, softball and cross-country seasons as many schools were preparing for their first competition of the season.

It also delays the start of the football season by an additional two weeks. The Georgia High School Association had already pushed back the start of the regular season from Aug. 21 to Sept. 4.

These programs are now facing a massive logistical challenge. All North Fulton programs play in regions that include teams from outside the county, and those districts may opt to begin play on Sept. 4 creating scheduling headaches.

Alpharetta, Milton and Roswell

The district said it will continue to monitor the impacts of COVID-19 and decide on the remainder of the season by Sept. 14. compete in a region with three Cherokee County teams. The situation is similar in Region 7-6A where Cambridge, Centen-

nial, Chattahoochee and Johns Creek play against Riverwood of Atlanta and three Cherokee County schools.

This year, Northview has been placed in a region as the only Fulton County team.

For softball teams, the move cuts the regular season in half even if play resumes Sept. 14. The GHSA’s final date for a regular season game is Oct. 10.

Volleyball teams face a similar outlook with the final day for a match set for Oct. 17. The final day of the crosscountry regular season is Oct. 31.

On Aug. 6, the GHSA moved back the start date for competition cheer to November and delayed one-act play until spring.
