Bicyclist hospitalized after incident in traffic ROSWELL, Ga. — A bicyclist was hospitalized with serious injuries June 16 after being cut off in traffic at Houze Way and Bellingrath Boulevard.

Officers responded to the intersection where the bicyclist fell off his bike. He told police a motorist cut him off as he was making a left turn.

Police questioned the driver who confirmed the bicyclist’s story. The victim was taken to North Fulton Regional Hospital to be treated for a serious neck injury and a broken finger.

Police say two suspects tried to sell stolen items ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested two men for allegedly trying to fence stolen electronics June 20 at the Guitar Center along North Point Drive.

Sanchez Corleon Braxton, 20, of Douglasville; and Jedarius Fernando Baker, 22, of Griffin, were both charged with theft by receiving.

PUBLIC SAFETY According to police, the suspects came to the music store trying to sell five keyboard controllers, a DJ party mixer, two mini launch pads and a pair of lighting control systems. The items were valued at $1,470.

A store manager told officers he immediately suspected the items were stolen because they were still in their original Guitar Center packaging.

The manager scanned two of the items and they showed up in the system as “in stock” at a Guitar Center in Kennesaw, according to police.

Couple posing as police grill man about lost dog ROSWELL, Ga. — A Creekside Way resident reported that a man posing as a detective showed up to his home June 15.

The homeowner told police the suspect was accompanied by a female, and they questioned him and his father. The suspect presented a badge and accused the complainant of stealing a missing dog. He claimed he would return June 18 to follow up on his investigation if the dog was not returned.

The man recorded a video of the interaction. Police said it showed a suited man in his 50s standing in the complainant’s doorway carrying a plastic folder. A woman who appeared to be in her 40s stood with him.

North metro cities alter fireworks ordinances for July 4th

BY ADAM DARBY adam@appenmedia.com It is no surprise north Atlanta metro cities and counties enforce strict rules on the residential use of fireworks. While they are a celebratory staple for events and holidays, the noise, light and fire risks they produce have prompted governments to place limitations.

Every city has its own designated times and noise ordinances for fireworks usage. Residents in Alpharetta, Milton,

Roswell, Johns Creek, Dunwoody, and Cumming might not be aware that the regulations change for major holidays such as the Fourth of July. Here is a breakdown of each city’s ordinances for fireworks usage when celebrating the birth of our nation.

Alpharetta Alpharetta has long extended the time for fireworks around Independence Day. For July 3 and 4, residential fireworks are permitted until 11:59 p.m.

No one under the age of 18 can purchase fireworks, and the minimum age for possession is 16.

Roswell Roswell allows fireworks until 11:59 p.m. on July 3 and 4. Anyone wishing to use them outside of the established hours must have a permit from the city. For safety reasons, fireworks cannot be used within 100 yards of water

Council candidate frustrated Alpharetta bond referendum over alcohol ordinance deadlock passes final council hurdle

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A candidate in this fall’s municipal election says he is “disappointed” by the Alpharetta City Council’s failure to act on a conflict in the city charter that will complicate his run for office.

Brian Will, a local restaurateur running for the Post 2 council seat, said the council ignored its own city attorney’s advice by failing to remove restrictions on elected officials from being issued a liquor license.

The current ordinance prohibits the city from issuing an alcoholic beverage license to elected officials, city employees or appointed officers, like city clerk or municipal judge. The ban extends to immediate family members.

“In addition to the fact we think there’s a clear conflict, it is antiquated,” City Attorney Sam Thomas said.

The vote to amend the ordinance failed 3-3. Post 2 Councilman Ben Burnett, who has announced he is not seeking reelection this fall, recused himself.

The city charter sets only four criteria for elected officials. It requires they must: • Have established residence in the city for six months • Be 21 years of age • Maintain residence within city during their term • Be qualified to vote in the city Thomas said the city charter — basically Alpharetta’s “constitution” —supersedes any city ordinances. He said the city was contacted about the possible conflict between the city ordinance and the charter by “a candidate.”

Upon study of the matter, Thomas said he and the legal staff concurred that the license ban on elected officials conflicts with the charter.

Councilman John Hipes called the ordinance out of date, saying a person could qualify to run for U.S. President

with fewer restrictions.

But others said they had misgivings about moving too quickly.

Councilman Jason Binder said he was uncomfortable lifting restrictions on elected officials while keeping them in place for others.

Councilwoman Karen Richard said the proposed change appeared as an addition to the original council agenda, and she preferred vetting the proposal more carefully.

Richard also posed a scenario that left everyone befuddled.

She said the city’s ethics policy would require a council member who has an alcohol license to recuse themselves from voting on liquor license applications. What happens, she asked, if four members of the City Council have liquor licenses?

In such a scenario, the council would not be able to approve liquor licenses at all because the three remaining council members would not constitute a quorum, she said.

Meanwhile, Will, who operates nine restaurants, including three in Alpharetta, has not tipped his hand about what he plans to do about the ordinance. Qualifying for municipal races doesn’t begin until mid-August.

He said he was heartened by the city attorney’s opinion.

“I was very happy to hear that Sam Thomas, who has been legal counsel for the city for the past 36 years, found that the ordinance in question was improper and in conflict with the city charter,” Will said in a statement. “It was discouraging to then see several members of the council make the decision to ignore Mr. Thomas’s legal advice and instead put the city in jeopardy of potential litigation, when this should have been a simple administrative change. I cannot recall any time in the history of Alpharetta that the city council has ignored their legal counsel’s advice.”

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta officials formalized plans June 28 to place a $29.5 million bond referendum on the November ballot.

Money from the 25-year bond will go for development and major upgrades to city parks.

The 4-3 vote was uneventful, a sharp contrast to the fiery dialog June 21 when council members debated the wisdom of placing a bond referendum on the same ballot with a transportation sales tax.

Opponents of the fall bond referendum said they want to move the election to May, six months after county residents vote on whether to extend the .75-cent transportation sales tax — or TSPLOST. They argue the city would be foolish to commit nearly $30 million for parks while leaving itself vulnerable to underfunding transportation if the TSPLOST fails.

In his remarks at the June 21 meeting, Mayor Jim Gilvin called it “financially irresponsible” to push for a bond this fall.

If passed by Fulton County voters, the TSPLOST could bring close to $60 million in transportation funding to Alpharetta over the next five years. If it fails, many of the road and sidewalk projects the city has identified for needed upgrades will have to wait or find alternative funding.

Councilman Jason Binder, who has pushed the parks bond for more than six months, said he is tired of waiting.

He said he has never received a commitment from the mayor that he would ever support a parks bond —

this fall or in the spring.

Binder also said he had asked opponents of the fall bond referendum to provide the council with a list of projects a May referendum would include in the event the TSPLOST is voted down this fall.

Such a list would presumably include a mix of parks and transportation projects.

Binder said he never got the list, and it’s time to move on.

Council members Karen Richard, Donald Mitchell and Ben Burnett joined Binder in support of the November referendum.

Mayor Gilvin and council members John Hipes and Dan Merkel were opposed.

In other action at the Monday meeting, the City Council voted unanimously to approve a memorandum of understanding with the City of Milton to waive certain non-resident fees for those participating in special needs summer camps.

Up until two years ago, Alpharetta and Milton had operated under an agreement through which residents of each city could participate in parks recreation programs without paying non-resident fees. The agreement expired in 2019.

Under terms of this latest agreement, Alpharetta will waive nonresident fees for Milton participants in Camp Happy Hearts, and Milton would waive non-resident fees for Alpharetta participants In Camp Joyful Soles.

The Milton City Council has already approved a more broad agreement for reciprocal use of parks with Alpharetta that included special needs summer camps.

economic impact of hosting the KPMG LPGA Tournament Championship is $1.8 million.

The event supported approximately 267 jobs throughout and generated $51,000 in local sales tax.

“We are so excited to have the LPGA Championship event in our great city and hosted at the prestigious, nationally renowned Atlanta Athletic Club,” said L ynda Lee Smith, chairwoman of the Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The JCCVB welcomes events that have a positive impact on our hospitality industry, especially after such a crippling year with the pandemic.”

Johns Creek Public Works augmented traffic patterns on Medlock Bridge Road to allow for an allow for an increase in pedestrians at the venue.

Director of Public Works Chris Haggard said the impact has been minimal thanks to the city’s traffic control center.

“We have a camera at each signal where we can watch the traffic and watch the pedestrians,” Haggard said.

Historic Milton church reopens building following tropical storm Zeta damages

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Pastor Randall Cagle said he “cried like a baby” last October when a mighty oak smashed the fellowship building at Boiling Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Milton.

High winds from then-Tropical Storm Zeta had felled the tree, cutting the building in half.

Given the significance the church has had on his spiritual and personal life, Cagle’s reaction was understandable.

Dedicated in 1837 off Birmingham Road, Boiling Springs was the first in North Georgia to be constituted as a Primitive Baptist church.

Cagle’s grandfather served as a deacon at the church. His father was the pastor of the congregation for 20 years. Cagle said Boiling Springs was the first building his father was taken to following his birth, and it was the last he visited a week before his death.

For Cagle, it was where he has attended services all 64 years of his life. He was baptized there in 1966 and was ordained as gospel minister in 1987. After stints with other Primitive Baptist churches in the area, he was called home to serve as Boiling Springs pastor last March, just ahead of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With so much of his life invested and influenced by the church, Cagle was devastated last October when he fielded a call that a tree had fallen on the congregation’s fellowship building. And he was overcome when he saw the extensive damage the massive trunk fall had caused, practically bifurcating the structure.

But when he was approached by someone who had witness the damaged, Cagle responded that the church would not just bounce back, it would “bounce forward.”

After months of cleanup, renovations and community action, the church’s fellowship building reopened its doors last month to continue as a hub for the local congregation. And with new amenities and finishes, it has, in Cagle’s words, bounced forward.

“We’re very blessed and we are very pleased,” Cagle said. “Everybody is excited.”

The new building, separate from the nearby worship center, will host the church’s Tuesday night Bible study and other gatherings, including an upcoming meeting of Primitive Baptist church leaders.

The renovations to the building from last October are transformative. The tree crashed through nearly the middle of the structure, which left just one major wall usable in the upgraded building. Despite the congregation’s efforts to navigate the debris, the church’s library was left exposed to the elements.

But now, there are now additional restrooms, a modern HVAC and electrical system, finishes that still smell of fresh paint, and an all-new roof, cabinets and countertops with other features.

And the tree that caused the extensive damage to the building is now a part of its structure. Pieces of the tree were taken to a local mill, and the lumber was used for the building’s steps. Another large piece serves as the mantle over the new fireplace.

Cagle said he thinks people have to make the effort, but “the Lord will make the way,” and he feels that was evident throughout the cleanup and renovation process. From small by-chance happenings, like finding a

tree removal service at just the right time, adopting an expedited build schedule and the congregation unanimously agreeing to the renovation plans, Cagle said everything worked out well.

The renovations were also a part of a larger community effort. While the church’s insurance covered much of the costs, there were other aspects that required funding. Cagle said the church received several anonymous donations, and even churches outside Georgia contributed to the $45,000 additional dollars that were required to construct the new fellowship center.

Despite the emotional day when he saw a vital part of the church that has so impacted his life destroyed, Cagle is thrilled with the end result.

“We didn’t know it would be a blessing, but it has been,” Cagle said.

Halcyon underway with second phase of development

By ANTHONY PARLOGEAN newsroom@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — In the aftermath of last year’s economic downturn, Halcyon continues to draw new business.

The 135-acre, mixed-use community in south Forsyth County has an array of new developments underway this summer as part of its second building phase.

Of note is the third creative office space, Building 1100, which is set for completion by the end of the year.

Phil Mays, principal of Halcyon developer RocaPoint Partners, said the four-story Building 1100 will add 60,000 square feet to the mixed-use community.

Alex Warner, Existing Industry project manager at Forward Forsyth, said Building 1100 already has occupancy agreements for nearly 90 percent of its office space.

Forward Forsyth is an economic development wing of the Forsyth County Chamber and local governments.

“The office vacancy and the want to be here at Halcyon is blowing up so much, in fact from an economic development standpoint we have multiple projects that are bidding to take up the entire second office tower,” Warner said. “Just one company taking up all the square footage.”

Mays said other phase two developments include The Forum Athletic Club, occupying a 23,000-squarefoot space, and a 5,000-square-foot dog boarding and grooming studio. Embassy Suites by Hilton has a 152room hotel set for completion early next year.

Overall, Mays said Halcyon withstood the economic downturn well. In all, 14 new businesses have opened since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020. They include Rise & Wine, Salata Salad Kitchen, Derbyshire and Board & Brush Creative Studio. CMX CinéBistro has reopened after being closed during the pandemic, Mays said.

No restaurant in Halcyon had to close its doors during the pandemic. In fact, according to an economic analysis by the Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce, there were no restaurants in the entire area of Forsyth County that closed their doors during the pandemic — there were two restaurants that relocated at the end of their lease.

“I think people already kind of knew about us and the different involvements that we had in the community prior,” Tanner-Wall said. “I think that definitely helped ensure that people were supporting us as much as we tried to support them.”

In addition to local initiatives, the Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce implemented an aggressive economic recovery plan primarily focused on restaurants and retailers.

“We worked with everybody to varying degrees on how to be resilient to change up the way they were doing business,” said James McCoy, president of the Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce. “[This allowed businesses] to understand what the emergency powers were that would let them do things that they weren’t

able to do under normal circumstances.”

Georgia’s state of emergency provided businesses some leeway in operations. Restaurants, for example, were allowed to perform home deliveries without requisite inspections, McCoy said.

Forsyth County implemented a grant program, FOCO Cares, which allocated $2 million to eligible small businesses affected by the pandemic.

Federal assistance came through Small Business Administration programs like Economic Injury Disaster Loans and the Paycheck Protection Program.

Mays said the combination of community outreach, state and federal resources and the ongoing phases of development have contributed to the economic resiliency of Halcyon.

“While the world slowed down over the course of the pandemic, Halcyon has been able to successfully bounce back thanks to the ongoing support and engagement from the Forsyth and surrounding metro Atlanta communities,” he said.

Johns Creek swears in new police chief

Veteran officer named to head department damaged by scandal

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Less than a year after it severed ties with Police Chief Chris Byers, the Johns Creek City Council swore in Mark Mitchell as the department’s new head June 21.

City Manager Ed Densmore, who served 12 years as Johns Creek’s first police chief, led the search, enlisting the help of the International Association of Chiefs of Police for the nationwide search.

“We chose [IACP] specifically because they offered to do a turnkey selection process,” Densmore said. “And they were one of the few [third party search firms] that were able to incorporate community feedback using surveys and those types of functions that we were specifically looking for.”

Using input from the city manager, the City Council and survey responses from the community, the organization began compiling an ideal candidate profile. The community survey, conducted

through the city’s website, drew 456 resident responses, according to Johns Creek Communications Director Bob Mullen.

The IACP screened applications and shared a shortlist with Densmore. At the same time, three panels of five members each were assembled for preliminary interviews with candidates. The first panel, Mayor Mike Bodker said, was composed of citizens who were either nominated

by City Council members or who had expressed interest in joining the process.

Those candidates were then screened and approved by the IACP. The second panel included members of surrounding local law enforcement agencies from Forsyth County, Alpharetta, Roswell, Sandy Springs and Brookhaven.

The third and final panel featured Johns Creek government department heads, not including law enforcement.

Each panel interviewed four candidates, drafted a list of pros and cons for each, and submitted their findings to Densmore, Bodker said.

The city manager then met with the candidates several times before extending the offer to Mitchell and submit his nomination to the City Council on June 7. Densmore said he considered the input from the community survey and from the three panels to form a desired candidate profile. He also registered informal conversations he’d had with residents throughout the search process.

“It really kind of boiled down to somebody who could restore some of the trust, help with the morale of the department… somebody who had a passion for the position,” Densmore said.

“It was somebody who had been in that role before as a chief. Somebody of high ethical standards, somebody who can really show a pattern of being able to work with the community.”

For Mitchell, the decision to lead Johns Creek Police was not difficult.

“Johns Creek has always had a very excellent reputation in the law enforcement community as one of the top-notch departments in the state,” Mitchell said.

“The more I went through the interview process, the more intrigued I was about the department, the more I wanted to be part of the organization.”

Mitchell joins the department with 28 years of law enforcement experience, having served as chief of police for the City of Canton and most recently as the chief of staff for the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice.

Mitchell said his time with the Canton Police Department taught him a lot about the importance of building trust within the community and gave him the opportunity to put the pillars of 21st century policing into practice.

The phrase “21st century policing” comes from a task force formed during the Obama administration that established policing best practices.

The six pillars governing the principle are: • Building trust and legitimacy • Policy and oversight • Technology & social media • Community policing & crime reduction • Training & education • Officer wellness & safety Mitchell said he sees good implementation of the pillars in the JCPD already.

“I believe my experience, along with what this department already has, as it relates to that mindset for community, engagement and building partnerships in the community, may definitely be a good marriage,” Mitchell said.

“We can sit here and talk about community policing all day, ‘It’s what we’re going to do, this is what we can do,’ and all that,” Mitchell said. “We’ve got to follow through with what we say we’re going to do, to continue to build that trust and those partnerships because communication is going to be the biggest key.”

Trust in the JCPD was damaged in the wake of the former chief’s exit last August. Before quietly settling with the city for $325,000 and resigning, Byers was investigated and found guilty of sexual harassment within the department.

Mitchell said he plans to uphold a zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment that was maintained during Interim Police Chief Roland Castro’s administration.

The road back to positive community relations is a long one, but Mitchell said he is determined to build that bridge.

“This is not an overnight thing,” Mitchell said. “But it’s a daily thing, a daily reinforcement, daily consistency, because we want our citizens to say, ‘That police department has our best interest at heart.

They’re going to professionally and procedurally treat us justly. And if they make a mistake, they’re going to tell us that they made a mistake… But they’re going to also put things in place to fix it.’”

Milton students spearhead effort to offer glass recycling in city on Maxwell Road, but with the onset of the pandemic, the center stopped accepting items from non-Roswell residents. The only other viable option was to haul glass recycling to a Sandy Springs center, far from ideal from a convenience standpoint.

So, Guo and Katekovich stepped up.

“We saw this as an initiative,” Katekovich said. “Milton is such a lively city, and we consume lots of glass through residents, restaurants and businesses.

We didn’t want all that glass to be trash, because there are so many benefits to glass recycling.”

The students interviewed waste haulers about the possibility of bringing glass recycling to Milton, and after months of organizing, Strategic Materials signed on.

Later, Katekovich, Guo and the city staff identified Bell Memorial Park as a prime location to place the glass recycling bin.

Since its installation in June, the response has been outstanding.

Guo said she has received word from many people who share their excitement glass recycling is again an option in Milton.

Katekovich said everyone she has spoken to has been pleased with the outcome.

MILTON, Ga. — After years of hauling glass waste to other cities for recycling — or just throwing it away — Milton residents now have their own service, thanks to an extended effort by two local students.

Milton High School seniors Jeslyn Guo and Ella Katekovich began their push to bring glass recycling to the city over a year ago after discovering that curbside glass recycling was no longer an option to residents. After months of discussions with a waste hauler and the City of Milton staff, their efforts have paid off.

Last month, Strategic Materials placed a large glass recycling bin at Bell Memorial Park and will offer free hauling and recycling services to residents, an ideal end result for the two students.

“It’s such a good feeling to the bin and see it slowly fill up,” Guo said. “Last week, we were taking with (Milton Conservation Projects Manager) Teresa Stickels, and she told us that the bin was already around halfway full, which is very exciting. That’s many tons of glass recycled already.”

Katekovich said there were times they weren’t sure their plan would come to

fruition, given all the details to work out, but to see residents using the bin at the park is “amazing.”

Stickels said the city is “extremely grateful” to Katekovich and Guo for heading the effort.

“Both girls feel passionate about recycling and making a difference in their community and environment,” Stickels said. “While the city understood and was exploring ways for residents to offer glass recycling, Ella and Jeslyn provided muchappreciated enthusiasm, energy and ideas — including the connection to Strategic Materials. We are incredibly thankful to have them as part of the team making Milton, and our world, a better place.”

Through their efforts, Milton residents now have a local, and free, option for glass recycling for the first time since 2017.

At that time, local recycling centers stopped accepting glass due to the complications associated with processing it, so the material could no longer be placed into a curbside pickup bin with other recyclables.

Milton residents who still wanted to recycle glass had to do the hauling themselves.

people wouldn’t have seen this specific issue come into question,” Katekovich said. “But to see people say, ‘Finally, glass recycling is an option,’ is very cool.”

The city also read a proclamation celebrating Katekovich and Guo for their initiative at the June 21 City Council meeting.

Katekovich and Guo are not done with their recycling efforts, though. The students are working on plans to hold monthly recycling events they hope will draw those who don’t typically recycle glass into the fold.

“In school, we are always taught that one person or just a couple people can make a change, and especially dealing with the environment, it takes a lot of community outreach and determination,” Guo said. “It feels really good for Ella and I to be able to do this.”

For its part, the city is also looking to expand glass recycling.

“The city’s goal is someday to have another bin elsewhere in Milton where people can drop off their glass,” Stickles said. “We see the container at Bell Memorial Park as a test run to determine the efficacy and need for this important service.

If we can find a suitable spot, we would love to have other such bins in other parts of Milton.”

DUNWOODY, Ga. — Nobody thought Dunwoody’s Brooks Curry could swim his way onto the U.S. Olympic team.

But he did.

Brooks swam the fourth fastest time in the 100-meter freestyle finals to secure a position on the 4x100-meter men’s relay team that will represent the United States in Tokyo come July.

“I think if you looked around the pool that day (at the Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska), there was nobody who thought that Brooks had a chance, except maybe Brooks and me,” Steve Mellor, his coach at Louisiana State University, said.

Brooks, 20, who grew up in Dunwoody Club Forest and attended Vanderlyn Elementary and Peachtree Charter Middle School, had been a standout during his freshman and sophomore years at LSU, but few thought he had a chance to make the elite team out of the 65 or so invited swimmers that competed last week for the coveted slots.

He was ranked 15th in the 100-meter freestyle coming into the trials, but in the preliminary round, his time dropped to 48.23, leading to the finals, where he swam the best race of his life.

His time, a personal best clocked at 48.19, earned him a spot on the team, joining veteran Caeleb Dressel, 24, Zach Apple, 24, and Blake Peroni, 25, as the top four qualifiers. Mellor said that male swimmers usually peak in their mid20s, another reason that Curry was an unlikely candidate for the team.

“There are a lot of stories about women peaking when they are 15 or 16 years old, but it’s different for men,” Mellor said. “I feel like these Olympics are sort of a freebie for him because I think he

has about another seven or eight years of great swimming in him.”

Curry, who trained with Atlanta’s Dynamo Swim Club during his elementary and middle school days, agrees that he has a lot more swimming ahead.

Included in his goals for future competition are swimming individual events, and possibly returning to his first love, the backstroke.

“That used to be my best stroke,” he said.

Curry leaves for Hawaii next week to join the rest of the team at the U.S. Olympic training camp, and then onto Tokyo for the Olympics, which begin July 23 and run through Aug. 8. At camp, he will train for about five hours per day, with about an hour of dry-land work, and four more hours in the pool.

Mellor said this year’s team, as far as speed, is as fast or faster than the 2016 U.S. freestyle relay team, which won the gold in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. That team included the legendary swimmer Michael Phelps, as well as Dressel, Ryan Heid and Nathan Adrian.

While he acknowledges that the sport requires a lot of self-motivation, Curry says that his parents, Scott and Amy, and coaches, including Mellor, were driving forces in his success.

“My friends and family really encouraged me when it wasn’t that much fun, and Steve is a great coach,” Curry said. “He really focuses on technique and goes into the mental aspect of swimming as well.”

In normal times, Mellor and Curry’s family would be making travel plans to see him compete in Tokyo. But because of pandemic-related restrictions, they will not be allowed to attend the games.

But Curry said he will take it in stride.

“I plan to have a lot of fun,” he said.

“And keep on swimming after this.”

Milton High School students set to premiere their stage play with Milton Community Theatre

However, Milton High School students JackDUNLAP son Dunlap and Madeline Parker are taking on the larger task of directing their own award-winning one act show, Trainwreck! The Musical, which is set to premiere as a mainstage production at Milton High School’s theatre from July 9-11. The PARKER two have collaborated with Milton Arts Council and Milton Community Theatre to bring their farcical murder mystery to a larger audience.

“It has been a pleasure to work with this talented and dedicated group of community members to bring arts to the city of Milton,” said Shelley Hogan, Milton Arts Council Director, and the show’s Executive Producer. “When I saw it, I was immediately excited about the possibility of producing a full, one act version and bringing it to a Milton stage.”

The “melodramatic spoof” is set entirely during a train ride featuring original songs and a variety of colorful characters. The cast is composed of current or recent graduates of the high school’s Advanced Drama program with rehearsals running throughout the summer. Bringing their own distinct vision for the show’s set, lights, costumes, and music, Dunlap and Parker are excited to put their first “full-on writing experience” to the stage.

“It’s definitely a new experience being on the directing side of things, especially since we are working with our friends and peers as the cast. But they are genuinely some of the most talented kids in this community,” Parker said in a press release.

“We are beyond excited to have the Milton community on the edge of their seats guessing whodunnit,” Dunlap said in a press release.

It is laugh out loud funny and it shines through that the kids love what they’re doing,” Hogan said. “I am in complete awe of the creativity, professionalism, talent level, and sheer commitment that these actors have brought to the process. I have been thoroughly impressed with Jackson and Madeline‘s dedication to not only telling a funny story, but doing it with a great set, original music, and thoughtful direction. Johns Creek In July 2018, Johns Creek adjusted its laws regarding fireworks regulations and times. Unlike most cities, they permit the use of consumer fireworks between 10 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on any day of the year including July 3 and 4. However, fireworks are prohibited in the city’s public parks without a written permit from the city. The fire department wants all users to place their used fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them away to ensure they are extinguished.

Airline marketing gurus know that to be true, hence loyalty programs featuring frequent flyer upgrades to first class as a coveted perk. With Delta as the dominant carrier in Atlanta, the competition for upgrades is fierce.

Delta SkyMiles members may move through four Medallion tiers: Silver, Gold, Platinum, and ultimately chasing pinnacle status, Diamond. Prior to COVID-19, given the amount of business flying from, to and through our airport, upgrades to first class grew increasingly rare unless one maintained Diamond status. Even so, on busy travel days it was common to see travelers with Diamond luggage tags sitting in coach.

Air traffic is increasing but still lagging pre-pandemic levels. Airlines are scrambling to make perks more attractive, wary that many business travelers that pay premium fares will not return anytime soon, if at all. This scribe thinks the fear that Zoom and other internet tools will inhibit travel is a bit overdone. In many circumstances, especially for building relationships, face-to-face is far superior to cyberspace. Plus, people want to “get out there.”

Travel to Florida is booming. For a week in mid-June, the Ritz-Carleton in Sarasota was virtually sold out.

The only room left was a Club Level King at over $1,300 per night with taxes and fees. Over a weekend in late March, the storied Grove Park Inn in Ashville was at 97 percent occupancy.

What may save the airlines from a dearth of premium flyers are WOOFS, “well-off-older-folks.” WOOFS are those that planned well, accumulated reasonably sizeable stock portfolios and other financial assets, perhaps built and sold a valuable business, or may also have holdings of productive assets such as real estate, timberland, energy reserves, etc. Unlike the 20072008 market slump, after the drop early in 2020 midst pandemic uncertainties, the U.S. stock market roared

back. Recognizing that many people suffered in the pandemic, and continue to do so, WOOFS have stepped up tax-wise charitable giving, especially those that can make donations with untaxed dollars out of qualified retirement plans.

But WOOFS also like to travel, and many of those that can are buying first and business class tickets. Partly out of COVID-19 sensitivity, but also out of comfort considerations, they eschew being crammed sardine-like into 3-across rows with minimal leg room, preferring the spaciousness of seats up front and lay-flat beds for long distance international travel. This trend is likely to accelerate as more countries ease travel restrictions.

Many airlines provide an alternative between coach and first or business class, at fares above coach but lower than first and business class.

On Delta domestic, it’s Economy Comfort. On most of Delta’s aircraft, the seating is 3-across, but you get a bit more leg room and perhaps better snacks, and you’re farther forward in the cabin compared to coach.

But if you’re traveling solo, or with a companion, on full flights you or your traveling partner may be next to a potentially sneezing or coughing stranger.

On longer international flights, a number of carriers, Delta included, have inserted a separate cabin between first or business class and coach. For fares lower than first or business class, but higher than coach, Delta’s new Premium Select class offers more leg room, a wider seat, a bit more recline, and upgraded food and beverage service. On Delta’s Airbus A-350-900 and some B-777-200ER aircraft, the seating is 2-4-2. A window and aisle seat on the 2-seat side of the plane is ideal for a couple.

Other long-haul carriers may offer a similar arrangement. Check seatguru. com for seat maps for all carriers.

Seatguru highlights “good” and “bad” seats, those too close to galleys or rest rooms, limited or no recline, missing window, etc. If you’re going to pay a premium fare, snag the seat(s) you want!

Plan ahead. If you’re going abroad, most countries require passports to be current and more than six months from expiration date. Due to pandemic-related factors, the processing time for new applications and renewals has been stretched out. Per a current State Department update, allow at least 10-12 weeks for new passport issue or renewal for a $60 fee. For $120,

you can pay for expedited service of 4-6 weeks. For peace of mind, allow even more time.

Humorist and newspaper columnist Robert Benchley (1889-1945) opined, “In America there are two classes of travel first class and with children.”

But we see more WOOFS springing for a family adventure with their children and grandchildren in America and abroad. Think about it. A creative trip is an amazing education, a memorybuilding legacy that even Mr. Benchley likely would applaud were he still with

Mary Helen Adams

Mary Helen Adams was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend who left us on June 19, 2021 at age 89.

She was born to Marie and Ted Gross in Chicago, Illinois, where she grew up with her three siblings Ted, Marguerite, and Loretta. Her high school senior class prophecy read “still bike-riding, has been feted as the only cyclist who has toured the whole of North America…” Her St. Gregory senior picture highlighted her as a “fashionable miss with a keen sense of humor with consistent courtesy”. While she did not become a cyclist, she did have a whirlwind tour. After graduating nursing school from Saint Francis Hospital School of Nursing, she decided to leave Chicago with eight other nursing friends to live in Hollywood, California. They lived in a two bedroom, eight bed apartment (none of them had jobs yet), where she worked as a nurse.

She later moved back to Chicago to live with her family and continued working as a nurse.

A few years later, she decided to join the military to see the world, and picked the Air Force because they had the best uniforms!

Soon afterwards, she was stationed in San Antonio, Texas. It was there that she met Challie Adams, and Mary fell in love and got married. Mary worked as a nurse on the surgical team at the Lackland Air Force Base Hospital performing some of the first open heart and heart by-pass surgeries.

After the birth of their son, David, in Texas, the family moved back to Chicago for 12 years. The family grew with the births of daughters Joni and Lisa. She continued to

work as a nurse. Mary was known for hosting great parties at the house for family, friends, and neighbors.

The family then moved to Tucker, Georgia, in 1973, where Mary continued her nursing career. She was a nurse at Egleston, Kennestone, and Piedmont hospitals.

She was a great mentor to David and Joni, encouraging both to study at Georgia Tech and become engineers. She later influenced Lisa to take on nursing as a new career, something that bonds them forever.

She eventually retired in the 1990s, but continued to inspire all around her.

Mary loved to travel and take cruises, and had a special fondness for going to the beach. She loved family and took great pride in it. Mary is survived by her children David (Andrea), Joni Roberts (David), Lisa Puckett (Reid); eight grandchildren (Michelle, Jonathan, Christopher, Kelly, Adam, Marie, Carter, and Sam); and five great grandchildren (Vivian, Ryan, Clara, Cassidy, and Thomas James). She will be missed, but never forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the Daisy Foundation (www.daisyfoundation.org/donate) , an organization that recognizes and honors extraordinary nurses. A “Celebration of Life” gathering to remember Mary will be planned in late Summer-early Fall of 2021 with family and friends. Both Mary and Challie will have interment with full military honors at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia in the Fall of 2021.

New places, new discoveries can happen by accident Have you heard the saying — how does it go? — that there’s nothing new under the sun?

If you’ve poked around in the outdoors for very long, you might think that’s just another STEVE HUDSON way of saying that Get Outside Georgia, there are no new aa4bw@comcast.net places to go.

But is that true?

I don’t think so. There will always be new-to-me spots that I haven’t found – yet!

Take the other Sunday afternoon as a case in point. My friend Marty and I had carved out a few hours for a bit of exploration-oriented fishing. We were targeting the Pine Log Wildlife Management Area – specifically Stamp Creek, a stocked trout stream.

I’ve got to say that Stamp Creek is a remarkably beautiful flow. When we were there, the stream was crystal clear.

I could see every pebble on the bottom even in several feet of water — and among the pebbles there was a lot of life. Minnows nosed among the stones, looking for something to snack on. Tiny snails crept along the top of submerged rocks.

And then there were the crawfish.

Have you ever really looked at a crawfish in a creek? This water was absolutely clear, and I was amazed at how colorful those little crawfish were.

Spotting one, I tucked my fly rod under one arm and focused my attention on the crawfish as it inched slowly forward. For perhaps five minutes I just stood there watching as the crawfish crept along in front of me in 6 inches of crystal-clear water, going whatever it is

that crawfish like to go.

After a little while I forgot that the small fly on the end of my line was still dangling in the water. In fact, I’d forgotten it completely until I felt a slight tug on the line.

My mind flashed back to fishing.

Had I managed to catch a trout without even trying? No such luck. Instead, what had grabbed my fly was not a fish of the finny sort but yet another crawfish.

Turning to look at it, I saw that it had somehow found my fly on the bottom of the stream and appeared to be trying to eat it. Eventually, it gave up, turning the fly loose and wandering off in search of more palatable fare.

But did we catch any trout?

We saw a few. But in water this clear, the fact is that they saw us long before we spotted them. No fish were caught, at least not by us. But that’s fishing!

After a while, we decided it was time to call it a day. We exited the creek and turned downstream, following the streamside path, and that’s when we saw it: a tapered stone structure about 30 yards away, barely visible through the thick summer vegetation.

It looked for all the world like some artifact of a lost civilization.

We picked our way through the undergrowth, approaching for a closer look.

The ancient ruin turned out to be a 19th-century iron furnace. There are several of those in the immediate area, the best known of which is Cooper Furnace near Allatoona Dam. But this one was new – at least to me.

This particular furnace, known as the Lewis Furnace, is one of several built in 1847 by Dr. John W. Lewis, who lived in nearby Cartersville. It was part of a thriving iron ore processing industry from the mid-1800s through the years of

In operation, the furnace was fired up and iron ore was dumped into the top. A water wheel powered a bellows system, which forced air into the furnace to smelt the ore and produce metallic iron.

To find this furnace yourself, start at the Pine Log Wildlife Management Area where Stamp Creek crosses under Stamp Creek Road. On one side the creek is the WMA’s check-in station, where you can usually pick up a paper map of the area.

After picking up a map, cross the bridge to the gravel road which leads away from the highway and into the management area. That road is gated.

If the gate is open, you can drive in. If not, you’ll need to hike. Follow the road (which more or less parallels the creek)

until it turns left and crosses Stamp Creek on a concrete creek crossing.

There’s space on either side of the creek for a few cars to park.

Now walk upstream along the trail on river-right (that is, on the right side of the flow as you’re looking downstream).

Look to the left for the stone outlines of the old furnace to appear.

It’s always fun to find new places like this one, especially when you find them by accident.

I’ve since learned that there are other old furnaces to be found in the area Pine Log WMA area. I like tracking down things like that, and you can bet that one of these days I’ll track down the others too.

New places? No. But new to me? Absolutely – and that’s half the fun!

No more pup-cups

So, I wrote my column a couple weeks ago about “pup-cups.” These are little cups filled with whipped cream that you get when you go through the drive-thru at Starbucks when you have RAY APPEN a pup in the front Publisher Emeritus seat with you or in ray@appenmediagroup.com the back. The reason — the main reason — I wrote a column about pup-cups was the fact that, in addition to being a cool little treat for our pets, this “pup-cup” thing I suspect is totally organic; it just happened — not planned by corporate or the “new product development team” at Starbucks. Probably just some barista on a whim one day decided to offer a patron a little treat for their dog, and the rest, as they say, is history. I love stuff like that.

offer pup-cups are even aware that their staff is treating the local pups — well, all but one, at least. How cool is that?

Starbucks doesn’t charge for their pup-cups; they are free. I mentioned in my column that I had turned detective to discover what other fast-food chains were doing the pup-up thing, for free. Most of the restaurants — like the Dairy Queen location in Alpharetta and the McDonald’s location I contacted — knew what I was asking for and happily handed one over to me for my pup, for free. The one exception was the Chick-fil-A location where I asked for one and was told “my pleasure, that will be 27 cents.”

So, if you’re a bit bored and even a tiny piqued with Chick-fil-A for charging for their pup-cups help me start a movement! Tell Chick-fil-A that pup-cups want to be free! Post it. Tweet it. Ask the “my pleasure” person in the drive thru line why the cups aren’t free like they are in Starbucks and everywhere else!

Tell them that even cow-lovers love pupcups! Let’s “do this thang!”
