Uninvited visitor pulls gun on hotel guest ROSWELL, Ga. — A Roswell man reported an armed robbery May 10 at the Economy Hotel along Old Dogwood Road.

The victim said he was in his hotel room when someone knocked on his door. When he answered, an acquaintance he recognized was standing on the other side dressed in a dark hoodie. He pointed a gun at the victim and said, “I will kill you, I’m real about this; don’t contact any of my clients anymore,” according to police.

The gunman then ran away and the victim said he gave chase while recording the man on his cell phone. When the suspect noticed him, the victim said he snatched his phone away and pushed him down in bushes. The victim said he got up and continued to chase the man down Old Holcomb Bridge Road until he got into a vehicle parked on the side of the La Quinta hotel and peeled away.

A witness corroborated the victim’s story about chasing the man. The victim gave officers a physical description of the suspect, who remained unidentified.

Office building burglarized, laptop stolen ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police were dispatched to a forced commercial burglary May 12 at a business along Old Alabama Road Con. The burglary alarm went off at the business late May 11, but when the alarm company called a staff member, he told them not to send police because it was likely a false alarm. The business owner told officers they’d been having a lot of false alarms lately.

When cleaning crews arrived to the office early the next morning, they found glass shattered in one of the offices. The

Deuntray Maurice Taskin, 37, of Mortons Crossing, Johns Creek, was arrested May 8 on Ga. 120 for DUI, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving and speeding.

Meagan Kerry Clarke, 26, of Stoneykirk Close, Sandy Springs, was arrested May 10 on Windward Parkway for DUI, hit and run and following too closely.

Jose Eduardo Hernandez, 24, of Creekside Way, Roswell, was arrested May 7 on Holcomb Bridge Road for possession of marijuana and possession of lysergic acid diethylamide.

Christopher John Bennett, 38, of Foal Drive, Roswell, was arrested May 10 on Holcomb Bridge Road for DUI, aggressive driving and failure to maintain lane.

Jeffrey Lynn Duncan, 54, of Park Ridge Lane, Roswell, was arrested May 13 on Old Dogwood Road for possession of cocaine.

Zachary Sharpe, 27, of North Charleston, South Carolina, was arrested May 14 on Holcomb Bridge Road for DUI and possession of cocaine.

Gerzain Penaloza Serraraz, 42, of Watercrest Drive, Cumming, was arrested May 16 on Holcomb Bridge Road for DUI, open container and failure to yield turning left.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Police were dispatched to Moe’s restaurant along Holcomb Bridge Road on May 14 for burglary reports.

The owner told officers someone cut out a side door plexiglass panel and broke in, then stole $3,000 from a safe in the back office. The owner said he didn’t have any suspicious customers lately. Police were unable to pull footage from any of the store’s security cameras.

Man arrested in strong arm robbery ROSWELL, Ga. — A homeless Roswell man told police someone assaulted him at the Exxon gas station along Old Dogwood Road on May 16 and stole his wallet and two cell phones.

The victim said the suspect punched him in the back of the head as he walked toward the gas station, then punched him 15 more times when he fell to the ground. The suspect stole his items and ran toward a nearby Economy Hotel.

Officers eventually located the suspect sitting with two other people in a Chevy Malibu parked at a Shell gas station along Holcomb Bridge Road. Ahmad J. Roberts, 39, of Woodstock, denied being involved in an altercation. Police found the victim’s cell phones, wallet and ID in a backpack Roberts was seen carrying.

Roberts was arrested and charged with robbery by force.

Victim said burglars stole $20,000 worth of jewelry from her home ALPHARETTA, Ga. — About $20,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from a home on Stratham Drive on May 15, police say. Police were dispatched to the residence and found several drawers and cabinets emptied throughout the house.

There were several items strewn across

the floor, and the suspects ransacked the closets and master bedrooms, according to police. The victim estimated about $20,000 worth of jewelry was missing.

A victim’s Ring doorbell camera footage showed a white sedan driving through the neighborhood several times throughout the day. It parked in front of a neighbor’s house about 90 minutes before the burglary was reported with its headlights off. The camera showed visible shadows from people off-frame crossing the road toward the victim’s house.

Shortly after, the sedan pulled away.

Alpharetta opens mic to public over parks bond

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta residents will have another chance to address the City Council about plans for a $29.5 million parks bond referendum this November.

Officials opened the matter up for public comment Monday (May 24), and a second public comment session is scheduled for June 7.

If approved for the ballot by the City Council and passed by residents in November, the money will be earmarked for about a dozen big-ticket projects. While cost estimates continue to be updated, city leaders stress that the tax rate — or mill levy — on property will not increase because of the added debt.

Typically, the city establishes a bond for a term of 25 years. That amounts to an annual payment of about $1.6 million for the city, a figure the Finance Department says can be managed under the current mill levy.

The city is now working to finalize its list of projects to garner public support.

“We’re on a timeline now to advertise and to hear public comment on the bond projects,” City Administrator Bob Regus told the council May 17.

Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Director Morgan Rodgers said the department is updating cost estimates on each project to provide the best picture of what residents can expect for the money. Some projects, like design and buildout of Old Rucker Park, are hard to figure, he said, because the public hasn’t had a chance to help decide on a look for the park.

As it currently stands, the city is listing 12 projects to consider for the bond. After months of discussions and workshops, council members ranked the projects by preference.

Topping the list are the buildout and improvements to the Equestrian Center at Wills Park and new turf for the Webb Bridge Park soccer field.

Upgrades and enhancements to Wills Park outside the Equestrian Center also scored high.

Both Wills Park projects have drawn estimates of about $5 million each, although final costs continue to be updated this month.

Other projects under consideration include design and buildouts for Waters Road Park, Mayfield Road Park

and Milton Avenue Park.

The list also includes design and buildout for the small Farmhouse Community site near Ga. 400 and Old Milton Parkway. The 5-acre tract is thought to be the earliest settlement for the area that would become Alpharetta. The Farmhouse Park project, estimated at about $2 million, has drawn strong support from the local historical community.

A handful of area residents spoke on behalf of the project at the May 17 council meeting.

“The Farmhouse is the beginning of Alpharetta,” Connie Mashburn, a longtime local historian and author told the council. He said the plot is in an isolated place.

“We’re never going to get floods of people down there,” Mashburn said, “but it’s something that’s worth protecting and allowing people who have an interest in that sort of thing to see.”

The Farmhouse preservation project has garnered strong support from two of the seven council members.

Donald Mitchell and Ben Burnett ranked it at the top of the list in priority. The balance of the council was less enthusiastic, placing it overall in seventh place on the project list for funding.

Even so, Mashburn said he felt privileged to live in a city that pays any attention to its heritage.

“I’m glad to be up here asking for more money, as opposed to asking for any money,” he said. “I feel very fortunate that we have the kind of city government that we do that pays attention to the history community and people who love history in our city.”

City Councilman Mitchell drove the point further later in the meeting when he received pushback on a proposed $12,500 expense to help continue the historical Stories Project at the Alpharetta Arts Center. The item came up as part of discussions on the proposed 2022 budget, scheduled for approval next month.

The item drew questions over how much city government support should go to the arts and cultural projects when there is little participation from the private sector.

“Remembering our own city’s history is one of those important things that we need to do out of our budget,” Mitchell said. “It’s $12,500 for God’s sake.”

Veterans groups plan ruck march for Memorial Day NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Three veterans’ groups will come together on Sunday, May 30, to hold a 10K ruck march from the Veterans Memorial at Newtown Park in Johns Creek to American Legion Post 201 in Alpharetta.

The march will include an intermediate stop at the Veteran’s Memorial at City Hall in downtown Alpharetta.

In the military, ruck marches are part of basic recruit training.

The participating groups are Sheep Dog Impact Assistance, www.sheepdogia.org; Carry the Load, www.carrytheload.org, and American Legion Post 201.

Currently 25 veterans have committed to participating in the walk, however organizers anticipate that by ‘march’ day, 40-50 veterans will be participating.

Participants will gather at American Legion Post 201 on Sunday morning. The schedule calls for them to be transported to Newtown Park at 9:30 a.m. The march will begin at 10 a.m. following a route along Haynes Bridge Road to Westside Parkway, to Thompson Street where they will pick up the Alpharetta Loop Trail to Alpharetta City Hall. Following a brief stop at the city’s Veterans Memorial, the march will continue on Academy Street/Milton Avenue to Wills Road, ending at American Legion Post 201. The entire march is expected to take approximately twoand-a-half hours to complete.

Upon arrival at Post 201, the marchers will be treated to a free lunch provided by Sheep Dog Impact Assistance and prepared by the Sons of the American Legion. Lunch will be available for sale to others.

North metro cities set own plans to revive Memorial Day observances

BY ADAM DARBY adam@appenmedia.com As the pandemic continues to alter plans for social events, north metro cities are determined to honor deceased members of the armed forces late this month.

Most cities are planning either virtual or in-person ceremonies for Memorial Day. Residents of Milton, Alpharetta, Roswell, Johns Creek, Cumming, and Dunwoody can look forward to honoring deceased veterans during the special day.

Roswell Traditionally the largest Memorial Day service in the state, Roswell has scheduled a virtual celebration streaming live on YouTube. The Roswell Rotary Club produced a video for the occasion comprising the “best of the best” moments from past ceremonies set to air on that Monday at 11 a.m.

“For 22 consecutive years thousands of people from Roswell and around the state have joined the Rotary Club of Roswell and the City of Roswell to honor the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our country,” Rotary Club President Lynne Lindsay said.

The event is held annually on the green at Roswell City Hall, but as in 2020, the city has canceled the in-person event for this year.

To commemorate the event, Army veteran Capt. Donna Rowe will be featured speaker. Rowe served as head nurse in the emergency room/triage area of 3rd Field Hospital, Saigon. It was there that she took on the task of saving a barely alive Vietnamese baby girl from her dead mother’s arms. Alpharetta Members of the Alpharetta Rotary Club are resuming their annual service virtually with a live stream from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Retired Marine Lt. Col. “On Memorial Day we honor those who sacrificed for our country,” co-chair of the event William Perkins said. “We salute the fallen and remember their lives. It is because of them that we have the freedoms we cherish.”

“The City of Milton is keeping a watchful eye on local and statewide COVID numbers while looking forward to and planning for the day when we can all safely and comfortably gather together,” Milton’s Special Events Coordinator Patricia Wolf said.

Dunwoody Meanwhile, Dunwoody is providing residents with the option to attend a live ceremony in-person or virtually. The event will be held at the Brook Run Park Veterans Memorial at 10 a.m. as a collaboration between the city and Dunwoody’s Veteran Events Planning Committee. DeKalb County Commissioner Steve Bradshaw will serve as the keynote speaker for the celebration.

“Last year, our Memorial Day Ceremony was held virtually,” Mayor Lynn

Deutsch said. “This year, I’m grateful for the option to safely gather to honor and remember those who sacrificed their lives for their country and our freedom.”

Deutsch will open the ceremony leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Dunwoody Police Maj. Michael Carlson, Georgia National Guard Captain, will introduce a moment of silence before Ralf Morales, Associate Pastor of Iglesia Adventista Church, delivers the Invocation. The ceremony will also include special music performed by the Callanwolde Concert Band Brass Quintet.

The commemorative ceremony is streaming live on the city’s official Facebook page.

Cumming Cumming has scheduled its in-person ceremony early on Friday, May 28 at 11 a.m. at the Veterans War Memorial. The event includes the new dedications into the Avenue of Flags display performed each year.

“Each flag represents one or more local veterans who have passed on. It is an extremely moving moment when each new flag is unfurled for the first time by that veteran’s loved ones,” ceremony organizer Crystal Ledford said. “This ceremony is a beautiful event that we hope brings our community together in gratitude for all those who have nobly served our nation, and particularly to those who served but who are no longer with us.

Parking is available in the Castleberry Road parking deck. The event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.

Wall That Heals receives repairs in time for Memorial Day

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Wall That Heals, a 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Newtown Park, received unpredicted, but much needed, repairs in time for Memorial Day. Visitors to Newtown Park may have noticed that the Wall That Heals, which the city acquired in March 2020, was missing some of its panels.

The removal came after the Johns Creek Veterans Association noticed several of the heavy marble slabs were in danger of falling and shattering.

Johns Creek Veterans Association President Col. Mike Mizell said no panels were damaged, but the grout holding the plaques to the concrete foundation was insufficient, and they feared the plaques would fall. Those that were removed were re-installed this past weekend using a screw and metal bracket.

“We’re re-adhering nine panels and eventually, we’re gonna have to do the same thing to the other panels, because they all used that same type of adhesive,” Mizell said. “So, I think we’ll probably be scheduling that at some future date.”

The City of Johns Creek is covering the cost for the repairs, but Mizell said that donations to the Johns Creek Veterans Association could be paid into the city for the additional repairs as needed.

Mizell said he is happy the problem became evident early enough to avoid damage to the wall. That means a lot to Veterans Association and to veterans around the state and country, he said. Newtown Park, home to the largest privately funded veteran’s park in the United States, will be the site for ceremonies honoring veterans throughout Georgia.

making plans to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The SHARE Initiative is a nationally renowned program that focuses on assessment and treatment for American military veterans who have sustained mild to moderate traumatic brain injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder during post-9/11 service.

Mizell said that he and the Johns Creek Veterans Association have high hopes for the Veterans Memorial Walk and want to make it “the most beautiful Veterans Memorial park outside of D.C.” He said he has met with a landscape engineer and a master gardener to help make the area in Newtown Park more beautiful and peaceful with shaded greenery and white flowers. They hope to partner with nurseries either owned by veterans or who would be willing to support the veterans in exchange for a placard or recognition.

Roswell officials to consider adoption of first Strategic Plan ROSWELL, Ga. — The City of Roswell is moving forward in the process to adopt its first citywide strategic plan.

Following a May 12 City Council work session where a consensus of revisions to the plan were discussed, consultant Management Partners is updating the plan. A resolution will be brought forward to the City Council June 14 to officially adopt the strategic plan.

If the plan is adopted, city department directors will devise their own strategies to meet the objectives. The departmental strategies would then also go before the City Council for adoptions.

Roswell Mayor Lori Henry said she is looking forward to this next step and to

seeing the community’s priorities directly reflected in city policies, programs and services.

“After extensive public outreach in the summer of 2019, we received more than 7,000 comments on what the community feels the priorities for Roswell should be for the next five years,” Henry said. “This process was important to me because it tells our elected officials and city staff what our citizens see as priorities for our community. We will now have a roadmap to achieve those goals.”

No mingling with classmates, no hugs, no group photos.

That left Alpharetta High School yearbook staff in a bind. But, production continued in the absence of all other organized social events.

Megan Eng, yearbook editor-in-chief, said with half of the student body attending school online, it was difficult to incorporate the entire student body on the pages. One of the biggest hurdles was relying on social media and other messaging tools to reach out to students.

The theme of the yearbook was set well before the pandemic transformed school operations: “You just don’t know us.”

Eng drew her inspiration from a desire to showcase and get to the essence of students at Alpharetta High School because a person is more than the image you see.

“I wanted to highlight how you see students, and you don’t really know them that well,” she said. “You can assume things that they’re associated with — clubs and friends — but truly when you get to know them, there’s a lot more beneath the surface.”

Eng said each student has unique stories to tell, and the yearbook is an outlet for them to showcase those stories.

“We wanted to help give them a platform to share what was important to them,” Eng said.

It was easier said than done.

Eng said getting timely responses, securing photos was a hassle.

The simple act of collaborating with staff was another challenge. New staff members are traditionally coached by senior staffers on the job. Staff get to know one another with social activities, and they also host professional workshops during the summer on how to use the software and improve camera skills.

The importance of communicating through a screen became essential for students to learn from one another and fill each spread of the yearbook. At least two staffers were assigned to each spread.

Eng has been on staff since eighth grade. She became editor-in-chief this year as a senior. Over the years, she said she has developed a good work ethic and the ability to collaborate with others.

“I’ve learned to show what I am capable of [by] doing my best on these pages so that I am putting out work that I’m proud of, and that’s something I can carry throughout my life,” Eng said.

“I am most proud that they’ve worked through this,” Flowers said. “There was really a team effort, and everybody tried to help everyone [in some way],” Flowers said.

“We got the book done and we were there for each other.

than 2,100 participants. A final community summit was held that fall with the public to share the information and create the community’s vision and value statements to share with elected officials.

Following that community summit, the mayor and council held a number of work sessions to discuss and come to a consensus on a vision, mission, organizational values and goals for the city.

The plan that will go before the City Council for final approval June 14 highlights eight goals that address transportation, community growth, economic development, city services, collaboration and community engagement, safety, governance and organizational excellence, and quality of life.

Alpharetta Commons sold for $24.6 million

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Hanley Investment Group has arranged the sale of Alpharetta Commons shopping center for $24.6 million to a private investor from California.

The 94,500-square-foot shopping center on the southwest corner of Old Milton Parkway and Kimball Bridge Road is anchored by Publix Super Markets and is 98.7 percent occupied.

Hanley Investment Group President Ed Hanley and Executive Vice President Kevin Fryman, along with ParaSell, Inc., represented the 1031 exchange buyer. The seller was an institutional real estate owner, operator and developer of a national portfolio, and was represented by CBRE Executive Vice President Chris Decouflé, Senior Vice President Kevin Hurley and Senior Associate Matt Karempelis.

The shopping center was built in 1997 and is located on 10.66 acres at 4305 State Bridge Road/ Old Milton Parkway.

The average household income within a threemile radius of the property is over $163,000 for the 86,000 residents. Nearly 209,000 people reside within five miles of the shopping center.

Fryman noted the Ga. 120 corridor is one of the most heavily traveled in the area, with approximately 54,600 vehicles per day passing by the shopping center. The property also has two signalized entrances. The property also benefits from the 16.5 million square feet of office and industrial space within a three-mile radius of the property, Fryman added.

In addition to Publix, Alpharetta Commons has a variety of service-based and internet-resistant tenants including Sports Clips, T -Mobile, nail salon, dry cleaners, a liquor store and food and beverage outlets.

“The service-based and restaurant tenant sales are seeing a spike in overall traffic as restrictions are easing and customers are more comfortable with frequenting these businesses now that they have the vaccine,” Fryman said.

A study by the Mayo Clinic found that a diagnosis was changed or discovered in 21% of patients seeking a second opinion, and nearly 66% of all patients seeking a second opinion had their diagnosis refined. Receiving care for the wrong diagnosis or, more often, not receiving care for an undiagnosed issue can be life altering or sometimes even prove deadly.

Recently, a surprising number of patients have told me about experiences when their own initiative or a second opinion proved to be lifesaving.

One patient was told that an incidental finding of low platelets (thrombocytopenia) was dismissed by his first physician as likely of little consequence.

This patient sought a second opinion, and a bone marrow biopsy identified leukemia and led to treatment. Another patient’s doctor told her that a mass could be watched and that since imaging was not necessary, it would not

be covered by insurance. She paid out of her own pocket for a CT scan that identified the cancer that she suspected she had. Multiple other patients shared similar stories. And whereas this may come as a shock to some, it is, sadly, not surprising to me. Physicians are not infallible. I genuinely believe that patients should be their own advocate. Good physicians support their patients seeking additional professional opinions. In fact, my patients and I share similar stories because a second (fifth actually) opinion saved the life – or more accurately the quality and course of life – of my son: I count my blessings that my wife holds to her convictions and advocates for our family. Multiple “second” opinions at her insistence saved my oldest child from a lifetime of developmental struggles and unnecessary deafness.

Our oldest effectively stopped talking at about 14 months old. He never had a diagnosed or suspected ear infection. And although he would eventually turn towards us when we called

She took him to multiple pediatricians and was repeatedly dismissed with the counsel that “boys will be boys” and “not everyone is a talker.” These were board-certified, well-trained physicians. Over the course of a year, his speech deteriorated from a dozen words at 14 months to only 2 words at 2 years old. A pediatric ENT, an audiologist and another pediatrician examined him and suggested autism, but when asked, they could not support their conclusions convincingly. The diagnosis just didn’t fit, as there were no other symptoms of autism.

Finally, at our second pediatric ENT and audiology appointment, the audiologist determined that the way sound waves bounced back from his ear drums was not consistent with open, air-filled middle ears. Dr. Matthew Whitley (Pediatric Ear Nose and Throat of Atlanta) scheduled an appointment to place tubes in his ear drums and explore further. Shortly into the surgery, Dr. Whitley discovered that my son had “glue ear,” which is when a glue-like semisolid forms

Our son could hear sounds, which explains how he passed his first hearing test at one year old, but sounds were heard as if underwater, and he could not differentiate between many sounds which made speech unintelligible. Dr. Whitley inserted tubes, removed the glue-like material from our son’s middle ear and restored his hearing. Within one week our son went from speaking two words to twenty words. We were informed that in a case such as our son’s, it would likely have taken years for the glue ear to resolve on its own.

Had we stuck with our first, second, third, or fourth opinion, our son would have been severely affected by deafness (and thus speech) during critical developmental years.

As a Mohs surgeon, I have had many of my greatest successes in the field of skin cancer, oftentimes in the context of my serving as a second opinion. One patient was told by his previous Mohs surgeon that further surgery was not possible on his scalp, which was riddled with painful cancers. However, my patient and I selectively employed photodynamic therapy, 5-fluorouracil cream and Mohs surgery with skin grafts. His scalp is now healed and pain and cancer-free.

that a biopsy was not necessary. The most common scenario has been that of growths that the patients were reassured were cysts but that ultimately proved to be squamous cell carcinomas. Biopsies have often identified the presence of skin cancers that, if left untreated, could metastasize to other organ systems.

Perhaps most frustrating to my patients, innumerable individuals have come to me upset that at their previous practice they were never told that Mohs surgery is an option. Frequently, patients first see me when cancers treated elsewhere begin to regrow.

Usually, these cancers were treated by a scrape and burn (ED&C), standard excision or freezing by another doctor.

Each of these methods is appropriate in certain circumstances, but what frustrated these patients is that they were not offered the choice of Mohs surgery.

Mohs surgery is a method of curing skin cancer by removing small pieces of tissue and checking the edges under the microscope until clear, cancer-free margins are obtained. Mohs surgery has the highest cure rate (usually 99%) of any procedure for the most common skin cancers and is considered the gold standard treatment for skin cancer on the head and neck.

Physicians have an obligation to present patients with the most rea-

sonable treatment options, even when that treatment option is not available in their own practice. I sleep well at night knowing that I genuinely give my patients treatment that I would not necessarily pick for myself. My job is to present facts and to be a guide but not to choose for my patients. Just today, I saw a patient who was referred to me for Mohs surgery of a basal cell carcinoma on the lower edge of the nose. We reviewed his treatment options together. He had never considered radiation therapy until I presented it as an alternative to Mohs surgery, and ultimately radiation therapy is what he selected.

Likewise, I occasionally have patients referred to me for Mohs surgery who select imiquimod cream instead of surgery after I present it as a treatment option for certain types of basal cell carcinoma. When non-surgical options exist, it is a surgeon’s responsibility to help educate a patient about treatment options worth considering.

Painted Horse affairs create rift with city, some neighbors

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — The Milton City Council may burn the midnight oil June 7 when it hears three use-permit requests for the Painted Horse, a working farm and Fulton County’s first farm winery located along Hopewell Road and Bethany Way. At issue are requests by the company to continue holding events like kid’s birthday parties, church or corporate events, summer camps and weddings the Painted Horse contends it has been hosting for decades. Owner Pamela Jackson said these types of events have occurred since she bought the farm, well before the City of Milton was established, and she is questioning why her business is suddenly being required by the city to obtain permits.

She also said she thinks she is being singled out, claiming dozens of farms in Milton host agricultural-related events and are not being required to obtain permits.

The city disagrees with the Painted Horse’s claim its business has a legal non-conforming use under its zoning regulations, or the events are “grandfathered” because they were potentially permissible when the property was under the county’s codes.

Nearby residents who have spoken

against granting the permits, citing traffic, safety, noise and other issues, with some claiming the farm his now infringing into commercial territory.

The issue came to a head at the Planning Commission’s April meeting, where nearly six hours of discussion resulted in the board recommending denial for two of the use-permit requests.

Defining allowable events Jackson contends the three use permits deal with events on the farm outside the operations of the winery.

One permit is for “agricultural related activities.” It allows for certain events like children’s birthday parties or summer camps. The city cites the permit as related to “children’s activities.”

Ellen Smith, an attorney representing Jackson, said the city’s codes allow for more uses not directly dealing with kids.

Another permit is for the Painted Horse to operate as a “rural event facility,” which includes, but is not limited to, events like weddings, private parties or corporate events. Though the city’s permit allows later times, Jackson’s request includes allowing live music until 10 p.m., with noise restrictions.

The third permit deals directly with a new initiative by the Painted Horse,

its “Uncorked” concert series that began last year. To continue the series, the city is requiring the Painted Horse to apply for an indoor/outdoor festival or event permit.

These ticketed concert events have encountered the most resistance from residents.

City staff has recommended approval, with conditions, of the three permits. The Planning Commission voted to recommend approval of the agricultural activities permit, but voted 6-1, to recommend denial for the others, with Zach Middlebrooks opposed.

Owner: Events are no nuisance Jackson, who has lived at the property for about 30 years, says her property is exemplary of the rural character the city touts. As other farms in the area continue to subdivide, Jackson says she has a “commitment to preserving land” and to operate her property as a farm instead of allowing some 18-home development.

But to keep her property viable, it is “crucial” to host events.

“If I’m going to keep this agricultural, I have to have a way of making money,”

She also said the events have been generally well received — reinforced by many who spoke in favor of them at the April Planning Commission meeting — and have not been a nuisance, though that point has been contended by several neighbors, specifically related to noise and traffic.

Jackson said the business has adhered to the city’s noise ordinance, hires two off-duty officers to direct traffic on weekends and during other large events, and she has not received a citation for any violation in about 25 years of running the farm and events.

Jackson maintains that the events are in keeping with a farm.

“We don’t want to be a full-time events facility,” she said. “We do want to afford folks the opportunity to use our greenspace and property on a limited basis. We are looking to complement and supplement the farm winery use.”

Jackson maintains that her business’ events are either grandfathered or a legal non-conforming use, she is seeking the permits to “be a good neighbor.”

That includes being a good “neighbor” to herself. Jackson said the Painted Horse only operates four days a week and shuts down the winery portion of the venue at 8 p.m. on weekends because she lives on the site.

City reacts to complaints The city says during last summer and fall, it “received various complaints regarding an increased number of visitors to the site, issues with off-premises parking and loud music coming from the property.”

After it met with Jackson “multiple times” last year, the city moved to require the permits, opposing her stance that the events were grandfathered from Fulton County.

The city also consulted its attorney, Ken Jarrard, who “concurs with city staff’s analysis on the grandfathering issue.”

Several nearby homeowners have spoke in opposition to the permit requests.

Many have expressed they take no issue with the winery, or some activities like kid’s birthday parties or horse riding lessons. But the ticketed concerts and other large events with amplified music have caused headaches, and some feel the farm is entering commercial-use territory.

“This small, quaint winery that we were very excited about on the front end has evolved into a full-blown commercial business that’s impacting everything we love about living in Milton,” one resident told the Planning Commission.

Sara Rich told the Herald she lives about one-half mile from the Painted Horse. Starting last year, she said, she noticed traffic issues at the farm and could

hear music well enough at her property to sing along.

“When the winery first started, we thought it was so cool and a great use of the land,” Rich said. “We were totally in support of that.”

However, Rich said she built her home in Milton for the “peace and quiet” the area offered, and the issues presented by large events at the Painted Horse are “too much” of a commercial use, and they are unfair to those who live nearby.

She is worried about the City Council’s upcoming decision on the permits.

“It’s scary to think that all it takes is one too many favorable Council members to effect all of these neighbors,” Rich said.

Mimi Sullivan also lives near Jackson’s property, and shares those worries.

Sullivan said after the Painted Horse was granted its farm winery permit by the state, the issues with traffic and noise began.

“We live in a residential area,” Sullivan said. “We are deeply imbedded in the middle of residential area with farms and subdivisions, and it’s not an appropriate place for a concert venue with alcohol. I find it puzzling that [Jackson] says she is doing this to preserve rural integrity, but nothing about a concert, alcohol venue screams rural farm or rural integrity. It’s really disruptive.”

Sullivan, Rich and other neighbors are in favor of the agriculturally related activities permits, though.

“Those are the kinds of things that have actually been occurring there for over 20 years, and I spoke in support of [that permit],” Sullivan said.

Planning Commissioner Marty Luck said with the right regulations, the Painted Horse could be an asset to the city, but he thinks “things are beginning to change,” and the business could be transforming into something “more commercial.”

off on more concerts going beyond those scheduled through the end of this year.

However, they still want to honor their contract, which is why they have requested the permit.

If the City Council chooses to deny the indoor/outdoor festival or event permit, Jackson said the Uncorked series will be forced to cancel its remaining scheduled events.

‘This isn’t Matlida’s’ Jackson and Smith said they want clarification on what is allowable under the permits versus the actual events the Painted Horse wants to host.

While certain stipulations of the permits allow for extended operating hours or added uses, the company wants to keep operations to what they have historically been, plus the remaining Uncorked schedule.

Fears that there will be an amphitheater, or that the Painted Horse is setting up to be another Matilda’s concert venue, are unfounded, Smith said. While it is seeking the same permit afforded to Matilda’s, Smith said Painted Horse’s events fall in the same light covered under the permit.

“This isn’t Matilda’s,” Smith said. “We proposed additional limitations, and it’s a much smaller operation, and intentionally so, to maintain that agricultural character that Milton is and loves to be.”

The Planning Commission meeting included a dizzying array of proposed limitations on the number of people allowed at certain times or for some events, but Smith fears that pinning down hard numbers is difficult on the Painted Horse because of the array of events held at the site. For instance, a birthday party could be taking place simultaneously with another small gathering, she said.

The next step, she said, is for her and Jackson to “simplify and tell our story,” and address the noise and traffic concerns of neighbors to let the company continue operating as it has.

Elementary students dig deep into agri-business

But close to three dozen visitors, students, teachers and staff assembled at Cogburn Woods Elementary School’s Agriculture Education classroom May 18 for a lecture and tour of the program.

Instructor Matt Brown, who operates a small farm at his home in Cherokee County, has led the program and has taken students through the various elements of agri-business.

It’s more than getting your hands dirty.

The pilot program, one of 24 approved in the state, sets a specific curriculum that teaches more than growing and harvesting.

Students at Cogburn Woods presented brief reports about the farm they learned to create, how it was built, how it is managed and how it turns a profit.

The list of guests included Fulton County Schools Superintendent Mike Looney.

The reports included details about the price they paid per acre, the number and type of livestock and how much income the farm brings in. Students highlighted

examples of how they rotate crops and grazing areas to ensure high yields.

Now in its second year at Cogburn Woods, the AG Ed classes teach concepts and theories relating to a broad spectrum of agricultural and agri-business topics. Students also participate in laboratory work where they receive hands-on skills.

Brown said he recalled a time asking someone for a pair of pliers, and the person had no notion what he was talking about. He said he teaches all students about tools and includes an overview of some machinery, like tillers.

The outdoor classroom area has raised beds for gardening, a full-size chicken coop with about a dozen chickens producing eggs, fruit trees and the beginnings of a greenhouse.

The course curriculum was created through legislation created three years ago.

State Sen. John Wilkinson, a former FFA program manager and agricultural education teacher who now serves as chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Consumer Affairs committee, sponsored the legislation.

Cogburn Woods Elementary Principal Lisa Garosi said she jumped at the chance to join the pilot program.

The program is open to students in 2nd through 5th grades, about 800 students, Garosi said. The school’s kindergarten and 1st grades classes have the opportunity to visit the class-

room as well.

Garosi said she’s proud to have landed a program that teaches children about farming.

“This is essentially what Milton was years ago,” she said.

The lure of greenways You hear a lot about greenways these days – and for good reason too.

Just what, exactly, is a greenway? Most dictionaries define greenways as linear, strip-like stretches of relatively undeveloped STEVE HUDSON land which are there Get Outside Georgia, for recreation (mostly aa4bw@comcast.net hiking and biking) or for environmental protection. They’re usually urban, mostly paved and often follow creeks or traverse other ecologically interesting terrain. For urban adventurers, what’s not to love?

Over the years, I’ve become especially fond of greenways. Close to home, I’ve spent untold hours walking on the Big

Creek Greenway, which more or less follows Big Creek. I think I’ve walked or biked just about the whole thing at one time or another. There’s still a gap in the middle, but they’re working on that. It’ll be great when the connection is complete.

Another greenway I’ve been enjoying these last few years is the Noonday Creek Trail which follows (you guessed it) Noonday Creek over near Woodstock. Ellie the resident mini Schnauser is especially fond of this one because it provides access to Woofstock, which is (in her words) “bark-bark-bark-bark-BARK!!!” If you don’t speak Dog, that means “a really cool place for dogs to RUN!!!”

Those two get a lot of my greenway time. But there’s another greenway-type trail that I’ve been getting to know, and that’s the Suwanee Creek Trail.

This one, over in Gwinnett County, is just far enough off my usual beaten track that it slipped under my radar for a long time. We really are creatures of habit, aren’t we?

But the other day I was looking for somewhere new to do some walking. I did a little searching, and the Suwanee Creek Trail came up. It looked promising, so off I went.

I started at the Suwanee Creek Park end of the trail. This access is located off Buford Highway a half a mile or so south of McGinnis Ferry Road. Besides being the beginning of the trail, it’s also the site of a neat disk golf course. That’s something else I’m playing with, though I am unbelievably terrible at it. But I have fun.

On this trip, though, I was hiking. I parked the trusty gray truck, put on the walking shoes, and set off down the paved trail to see what I would see.

The trail meanders down toward Suwanee Creek and then turns to follow the creek.

For the first leg of this adventure, I hiked from Suwanee Creek Park to the McGinnis Ferry access point. The trail actually goes underneath McGinnis Ferry Road, so there’s no need to risk life and

limb trying to cross that busy thoroughfare.

But once you’ve passed under the roadway, how do you regain the trail?

That, as it turned out, was a bit confusing. Eventually, I found myself standing with another hiker at the trail map trying to figure it out. He too was trying to decide how to continue beyond that point. Eventually we discovered that the secret was to follow the trail under McGinnis Ferry Road and then continue along the paved trail to a parking area. Once there, make your way from the parking area to a wide paved sidewalk along McGinnis Ferry Road, then cross the creek on the sidewalk via the McGinnis Ferry Road bridge, and then (once across the bridge) turn left to pick up the trail. It’s easy once you know how, but it’s confusing till you figure it out.

From that point, the trail zigzags down the side of a hill and then continues to follow the creek, rising and falling as it goes.

At one point you’re far above the creek as it flows along sedately a long ways below you. The view is great, and you may want to linger.

But I’d used up a lot of my lingering time trying to figure out how to regain the trail, so I kept moving. In fact, I didn’t have time left to finish the whole trail as I’d hoped. I only made it as far as the Martin Farm Park trail access before I had to turn back toward the truck and then head home to supper.

How was it? Supper was great. You should have come by – we had plenty!

Oh – of course, you mean the trail. Like I said, I love greenway trails, especially if they’re shaded like lots of this one is.

That’s something to appreciate more and more as we move toward summer.

I also appreciated the boardwalk sections, which have always been a favorite trail feature. Boardwalks often cross wetlands, areas rich in wildlife, and you can bet I’ll be carrying binoculars on future excursions.

There’s one other neat feature worth noting– a tiny little covered-type trail bridge not far from McGinnis Ferry Road.

The bridge carries you over a tiny creek and was an unexpected surprise.

It’s always nice to find new places, and this one was definitely in the new-to-me category. I’m looking forward to checking out the rest of it – maybe starting this very afternoon!

A critique on a useless cleaning device In this rendition of “Consumer Advice You Didn’t Request,” I will outline why the Swiffer mop/Wet Jet is perhaps the most useless cleaning device on the market today.

Yes, I have previJOE PARKER ously been awarded Editor for investigative joe@appenmedia.com journalism, and I’m coming at you with more hard-hitting stories today.

My wife and I recently listed our home for sale, which involves mopping the floors approximately every 17 minutes. During this process I have found that the Swiffer Wet Jet is only a good product if you are looking to change the location of dirt and dust from one section of floor to another while simultaneously making your floors extremely wet.

And don’t bother avoiding walking through a room because you’ve “mopped” with a Swiffer. In fact, absolutely walk over them, because rubbing a wet foot across your hardwood, vinyl or tile floors after they have been “Swiffer-ed” is actually more effective

at cleaning your floors than using the Wet Jet. That’s because dirt and grime will actually stick to a wet foot, whereas a Swiffer pad just likes to take it for a quick ride from, say, under the kitchen table to a more prominent place, like the middle of your living room.

The tagline of “Stop cleaning, start Swiffering” even implies that by using a Swiffer, you are, in fact, not cleaning.

Hey, at least they’re honest.

And it’s not even particularly easy to use.

Just slap on a pad, press a button to spray some floral-scented mop juice and have at it sounds easy enough, but there’s more to it than that.

I am a man of average height, but when using a Swiffer, I have to adopt a position that could also be used to tie someone else’s shoes. Showing plumber’s crack is guaranteed.

Using any bit of elbow grease while Swiffering, which we have already established makes no difference, causes the mop’s pole to bend. My model now looks more like a fishhook than a cleaning device.

And sure, a conventional mop gets grimy, greasy a generally nasty after being used, but that also shows that

grime, grease and schmutz was actually transferred from the floor to the mop head, whereas a Swiffer pad seemingly just has a chemical that makes the pad change colors to imply it actually did something other than relocate dirt.

But that’s not how things are portrayed on Swiffer commercials.

No, Swiffer ads show their product erasing the most colorful of messes by people that seem to really, seriously, enjoy mopping. These ads could be the modern-day equivalent to the “This is

your brain on drugs” commercials.

Do you dance around, smiling giddily and show hardcore satisfaction from mopping despite the fact you aren’t actually cleaning anything? This is your brain on drugs.

And can I have some? Because any drug that makes cleaning you floors a joy should absolutely be legal and readily available. That’s especially true when I’m attempting to “mop” approximately 56 times a day and could use a nice pick-me-up.

GEORGIA — Three local teams earned championships at the Georgia High School Association golf state finals held at several courses May 17-18.

The Lambert girls continued their dominance of the competition in the state’s highest classification, winning their seventh state championship in the last eight years. The Johns Creek boys also extended their championship streak to five, and the Milton boys won their second state title and first in nine years.

Several other local teams had strong showings at the finals.

Class 7A boys Milton boys golf led throughout the Class 7A boys finals at Spring Hill Country Club in Tifton, outpacing the field by 16 strokes to capture the program’s first state championship since 2012.

The Eagles finished the two-day tournament at 22-over-par, 16 strokes ahead of Lambert and more than 40 strokes ahead of West Forsyth in third.

Milton led by nine strokes after the first round and cut their team total by six strokes in the second day of play.

The Eagles were led by three golfers placing in the top-5 in individual play, including a low-medal win by Craig Long, who shot a 73 and 72 for a 1-overpar finish.

Long had six birdies, 23 pars and seven bogies through the tournament to beat the field.

Teammate Rahul Rajendran started the second round tied for seventh and improved his second-round score by five strokes to take second at 3-over-par.

Will Jones tied for fourth at 5-over-par through both rounds.

Mason Fundingsland rounded out the Eagles’ scoring with a 13-over-par performance, good for 16th overall.

Though Lambert couldn’t keep pace with Milton, the Longhorns bested the rest of the field by 25 strokes to finish as state runner-up.

Lambert had all four of its scoring players place in the top-20, led by Myles Jones, who tied for fourth at 5-over-par.

Nick Schwendiman was ninth, Luke Cusick tied for 11th and Wesley Hu improved his second-round score by five strokes to finish 18th.

West Forsyth, the 2019 Class 7A champs, earned another podium finish this year by placing 25 strokes behind Lambert for third.

Jimmy Coleman led the Wolverines, tying for seventh at 7-over-par.

Roswell improved its second-round team total by 14 strokes to place seventh overall in a logjam of teams. The Hornets were edged by Lowndes by one stroke but beat out North Gwinnett by a single

The Longhorns outpaced the field by 21-strokes in each round to finish at 10-over-par, 42 strokes ahead of Peachtree Ridge.

The Longhorns nearly had a perfect tournament with their four scoring players all finishing in the top-5 in individual play.

Averi Cline defended her crown as the low medalist in 7A girls competition, shooting a 73 and 72 for a 1-over-par finish with eight birdies, 19 pars and nine bogeys.

Cline beat out teammate Sara Im, the individual state runner-up at 4-overpar, who shot two rounds of 74. Iris Cao completed the podium sweep for Lambert with a 5-over-par finish.

Sharon Mun rounded out the Longhorns’ scoring with a 9-over-par performance, good for fifth.

Alpharetta placed fourth in team scores, finishing three strokes behind Colquitt County. The Raiders’ Mahima Vurupatur led the field after the first day of competition at even, with a 79 in her second round, placing her fourth overall.

South Forsyth entered the second round tied for ninth, but the War Eagles improved their second-day total by 10 strokes to finish sixth. Kennedy Arnette led South with a 22-over-par performance to place 12th.

Forsyth Central’s Samantha Dewendt competed as an individual and shot an

84 and 88 to tie for 17th.

Class 6A boys Johns Creek now has a handful of consecutive championships. The Gladiators took their fifth straight 6A championship May 18 at Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrolton. Johns Creek is the fourth team to win five straight championships in boys golf since 2002.

Johns Creek led the field by seven strokes after the first round, ahead of North Fulton foes Cambridge, but they improved on that round by nine strokes in the second day of play to beat hosts Carrollton by 17 shots.

Devel Patel led the Gladiators and finished second overall at 5-under-par.

Patel improved on his first round by three strokes to edge a Carrollton golfer for state runner-up.

Teammate Bruce Murphy placed fifth, Taiki Miyagi was ninth and James Baker tied for 12th to round out Johns Creek’s scoring.

Cambridge’s second-round total increased by nine strokes, but the Bears still captured a fourth-place finish in team scores, two strokes behind Dalton and two ahead of Creekview.

The Bears were led by Jake Peacock, who shot two rounds of a 1-over-par 72 to tie for seventh. Teammates Patrick Burns (T12) and Clay Taylor (T19) also placed in the top-20.

“Go-go” refers to active retirees. They’re the ones off of a cruise ship in Antarctica sporting bright red parkas and climbing an ice- and snow-covered hill on the way to view a glacier. Or on a bespoke tour of Australia hiking a trail in the Outback. Hoofing it through European cities and villages on a Rick Steves tour. Still running the Peachtree Road Race after all these years.

They’re the older walkers and runners in the park. The tennis and pickleball players at the senior center. The active volunteers.

The helpers. They have money and the stamina to do what they wish and to serve others.

Invariably you slow down at some point. The slow-go phase of retirement may be precipitated by physical limitations and/or financial limitations. You can’t quite do what you did as a go-go retiree, certainly not with the same intensity.

There was a time when reaching old age was a definite achievement. Per Wikipedia, in 17th-century New England, about 40 percent of people died before reaching adulthood. Of the Founding Fathers, Ben Franklin lived to age 84. George Washington died at 67. Alexander Hamilton perished at 47 from a gunshot wound in a duel, an extreme form of cancel culture when people disagreed.

“No-go” reality is foretold in the Bible.

In John 21:18, Jesus warns, “I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.’ Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God.” Anyone involved in caregiving understands this reality.

Women generally end up as caregivers to their husbands in the no-go stage of life. But a husband may be called upon to care for an ailing wife. Often, however, it’s daughters or sons in their 40s and 50s who step up to help an infirm mom, dad, widow, widower, grandparent or other loved one. Have in place up-to-date powers of attorney for assets and health care, advance directives, wills, and perhaps, a trust, to avoid frantic situations involving “now what?” You don’t roll up to a nursing facility or care home and check in the

patient like it’s a Four Seasons hotel.

The French poet Jean de La Fontaine advised, “Death never takes the wise man [or woman, we might add] by surprise, he [she] is always ready to go.” Have you prepared for “what if?” so you don’t wreck your spouse’s, daughter’s, or son’s life? If you have complex holdings, or real estate in different states, have you explored trust planning? If you’re a closely held business owner or key person in an enterprise, have you provided for succession in the event of disability or death?

Then again, live life without fear. Henry Van Dyke, Dutch-American poet, academic, and clergyman, observed, “Some people are so afraid to die, they never begin to live.” Clients sometimes ask their financial adviser, “Can I (we) afford to do so-in-so?”

A client, now deceased, wanted to take his family, along with a passel of grandchildren, on an Alaskan adventure, including a cruise. He said, “It’s gonna cost more than a new Mercedes.” I pointed out that a Mercedes ultimately will wear out, but the memories of the trip will last a lifetime! He and his wife talked about that experience over and over until they passed away, reveling in the fact that they had the means and gumption to do it.

It’s about setting a goal, figuring out what your dream will cost, and accumulating the capital to make it happen within your desired time frame. You may have to drive a used car or fly coach before you can buy that dream machine or fly first class. But the saddest thing in old age is to suffer from “shoulda, woulda, coulda” regrets.

“Dream achievement” often takes time, patience and discipline. “Hard dream accomplishment” is often far more rewarding than what comes easy. Consultant, coach, speaker and writer Matthew Kelly, in his book “The Dream Manager” said, “Dreams bring us to life. Dreams animate us, and what dreams do for individuals, they also do for relationships . . . and companies...The pursuit of dreams creates passion, energy, enthusiasm, and vitality...

Every relationship improves when we are mindful of each other’s dreams.”

Providence Park to shut down to install new amenities

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Frequent visitors to Providence Park will likely be disappointed the park is set to close for several weeks, but they are bound to enjoy the new amenities offered once its gate is opened again. The 42-acre park in the southern portion of the city is set to close for two to five weeks while a new trail, pavilion and fishing pier are installed.

Milton says it is closing the park

during the construction period so work can be done “safely and efficiently.”

Interim Parks and Recreation Director Tom McKlveen said the city should have a definitive start date for the construction by the end of this month, and the work is expected to begin in June.

The city recently signed off on contracts with Tri Scapes to construct the new features, which should be completed by Nov. 30. In a boon for taxpayers, Milton will only be on the hook for about half the cost of the renovation.

The city previously received the

approval of a $200,000 grant from the Department of Natural Resources to construct a new trail at the park. One of the stipulations of that grant is that the new path must be ADA accessible, which presented an issue. With an 80foot decline from the parking area to Providence Lake, plans were put back on the drawing board to accommodate an ADA mandate that the grade of the trail cannot exceed 5 percent at any point.

In November, the city presented an updated plan that calls switchbacks and

a waving design that can accommodate the slope regulation and is moving forward with that plan.

The 8-foot wide, paved trail will run about one-half mile from the parking area to Providence Lake.

The two existing trails at the park will be relatively unchanged. The red trail on the western portion of the property will run a similar path, but the trail will be redirected farther from the park’s western border, which abuts residential

The city received additional funding — $100,000 also from the state DNR — for the pier and pavilion at the lake.

While no firm opening date has been set, the city does anticipate the park to be open in the fall. All con-

struction must be completed by the end of the year under the provisions of the grant.

A permanent restroom facility is also slated for construction at the park, but McKlveen said that is not included within this phase of renovations.

“After getting estimates based on previous plans, we have asked DNR for a modification of the terms for the restroom-related grant,” McKlveen said. “We will wait on that process to unfold before moving forward with the restroom facility.”

Local student wins tennis state title ALPHARTETTA, Ga. — Conley Raidt, a freshman at Rivers Academy in Alpharetta, won a Georgia Independent School Association tennis state championship April 28. Raidt, who also earned All-State honors from the GISA, took the AA division title as the first girls tennis player in the school’s history.

Raidt is currently ranked top 30 in the country in the Girls U16 age division. She is coached by Pete Bauer and Joan Sala at Sanchez Casal Academy at Lifetime Fitness in Peachtree Corners.

Cambridge placed 10th in team scores in the 12-team tournament. The top four scores for the Bears shot two rounds of 322 to finished at 218-overpar. Elle Roberts led the team with rounds of 100 and 91 to tie for 26th.

Centennial’s Elizabeth Powell competed as an individual and earned a strong finish at 6th, making her the highest non-team player in the tournament. Powell was ninth after the first round and improved her second-day total by a stroke to finish at 21-over-par.

Class 5A boys Northview competed in its first state finals since moving down to Class 5A and earned a top-10 finish at Green Island Country Club in Columbus.

The Titans scored a 342 in each round, resulting in a 116-over-par finish, five strokes ahead of Union Grove.

All four of the Titans’ golfers placed in the top-20. Alicia Choi improved on her first-round score by six shots to place ninth, Lauren Siegel tied for 13th and Julia Yun-Thayer tied for 17th.

The Blessed Trinity girls placed 33 strokes behind Northivew and earned a fourth-place finish. The Titans cut 14 strokes off their first-round total to finish 13 shots ahead of Calhoun.

Allie Kantor was the low-scorer for Blessed Trinity, shooting 9-over-par.

Kanto shot an 81 in the first round but improved by seven strokes on May 18.

Class-A Private boys No local teams competed in the boys Class-A Private finals, but Jack Schoenberger of King’s Ridge had a strong showing in individual play.

Schoenberger was tied for seventh at 1-over-par after the first round of play and improved on that mark by three shots in the second round to finish sixth overall. The junior had one eagle, six birdies, 22 pars and seven bogeys in the tournament at Heritage Golf Links in Tucker.

Johns Creek Arts Center event celebrates Eid al-Fitr

BY ADAM DARBY adam@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Arts Center held another swag bag art to-go drive-up event on May 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to commemorate Eid al-Fitr. Residents and families were welcome to drive up to the entrance and receive giftbags of child-friendly art items themed after the Muslim holiday.

Eid al-Fitr means the “festival of breaking the fast” and was celebrated between the evenings of May 12 and 13.

“This marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan in which Muslims fast for a whole month during daylight hours and reflect on those who are less fortunate and are encouraged to be generously active in charities,” said Arts Center Executive Director Stephanie Donaldson. “The diverse groups we have focused on have been very happy that we are reaching out to their communities fostering a sense of good will, inclusion and community.”

This is one of a number of the organization’s drive-up events focused on an important cultural landmark or holiday.

A giveaway was held for Earth Day last month. The initial idea for these swag bag events came as a response to COVID and the organization’s willingness to continue bringing the arts to the community.

“Our commitment to outreach and community service is an integral part of our programming… as a way to continue our community service we decided to celebrate the holiday traditions important to the members of our community.”

Donaldson said. “Our city is recognized as one of the most diverse in the nation, and we felt it important and exciting to celebrate along with our neighbors and learn along the way.”

The Arts Center has plans to continue providing elementary-aged children with educational art activities centered on cultural celebration and representation.

Despite the struggles of the pandemic, Donaldson said she loves the idea of

allowing a child to complete an artistic activity independently at home.

“With each swag bag family drive up day we learn about cultural traditions that are not our own. We feel it is important in a community such as ours to understand the relevance of and respect traditions which we may be unfamiliar with,” Donaldson said. “The diversity of our board of directors reflects our community, and it is important that our programming does the same. We want everyone in the community to feel welcome and embraced by the Johns Creek Arts Center.”

Local group to produce documentaries through humanities grant JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A few Student Leadership Johns Creek class of 2023 members will become documentary personalities in the coming year thanks to a recently awarded Georgia Humanities Spring 2021 Grant. Student Leadership Johns Creek worked with the Johns Creek Historical Society and Mercer University to apply for this grant. This alliance will be working on four videos that will be shown to residents during a question-and-answer event in Johns Creek and then at a reception at Mercer University. The videos will be used by educators in the future throughout Georgia. The grant is titled: “They Were Here: Preservation and Commemoration of the Macedonia African Methodist Church Cemetery of Johns Creek.”

Four groups from the Student Leadership Johns Creek class of 2023 will each be creating one of the videos as their community group assignment. The project will involve student-driven research and production of four documentaries that focus on different aspects of the history of the Cemetery and Johns Creek.

“We see this as an incredible opportunity for our student leaders to meld the past with the future; learn and articulate what happened in history as they move into their futures,” said Irene Sanders, Student Leadership Johns Creek executive director.

The first documentary will highlight the history of the cemetery and historical context of slavery and racial segregation from Reconstruction through the 20th century.

The second documentary will highlight the legacy of the Cherokee and how the lives of local farmers of Cherokee descent were intertwined with Black residents who were buried in the cemetery. The third film will

focus on April Waters, a notable resident of Johns Creek who is buried at the cemetery.

For years, scholars and residents assumed Waters was an enslaved woman who was freed upon her master’s death.

However, genealogical uncovered that April Waters was a man who was not freed as per his master’s will. This documentary will highlight the implementation of historical methods that are required when examining documents for accuracy when building a historical narrative.

The fourth film will focus on the living descendants of those buried in the Macedonia Cemetery. Interviews from community members will highlight the cemetery’s founding, its neglect, the impact of Jim Crow on the African American community, and the community effort to revitalize this space as a civil rights sanctuary for the multigenerational and Solution diverse Johns Creek residents.
