Alpharetta plans virtual Memorial Day tribute ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The City of Alpharetta and the Rotary Club of Alpharetta will host a Virtual Memorial Day Tribute at 9 a.m. Monday, May 25. The ceremony will feature a combination of live and recorded content that will be livestreamed from Brooke Street Park behind Alpharetta City Hall. The public is invited to tune into the program at youtube.com/alpharettagov.

“While we are observing Memorial Day in a very different way this year due to social distancing, we knew it was important to provide a way for our community to honor the heroes who gave their lives

and go back to my old, normal life,” Singh said. “But then I wonder, is this the new normal?”

Singh said she had not realized the social environment being in school afforded her until it was halted by the pandemic. She says her social time is now spent texting and calling people digitally, but those means of interactSINGH ing do not give her the level of social satisfaction she desires.

She especially feels for those who have even less interaction. Prior to the pandemic, Singh said she and her family volunteered on weekends at a nearby Arbor Terrace assisted living center.

“Now I look at the news and see that the retirement homes are also undergoing quarantine,” she said. “And it breaks my heart, because the seniors can’t even have their family members visit them or have people from outside come in to entertain them. And all they can do is stay inside the building every day, hoping that they can see their family once this is all over.”

There are also the stories of those who are unemployed or homeless, Singh said.

Wanting to help in some way, Singh asked

her mother to donate funds to those is need, and she agreed to do so. Singh said she has always wanted to be a doctor and help people, and the pandemic has increased that desire as she watches medical workers risking their lives “to make sure that ours are still intact.”

Though middle school years are a mostly carefree time, the pandemic does still weigh heavy on those entering their teenage years.

“It’s not so bad to not leave the house to go shopping or go out to eat every once in a while, which has led me to believe that in these times we should all be close to our dear ones and care about our families,” she said. “It’s weird because there are days when I’m having the time of my life just staying at home and relaxing, but then there are the times when the discombobulated feelings of helplessness, boredom and loneliness plague my time alone.”

But, there are some silver linings.

“To my surprise, quarantine has also brought many good changes in my life, such as me trying to eat healthier, work out way more than I did before, and just change my lifestyle for the better,” Singh said. “Despite no apparent end of this virus in sight, I hope quarantine brings out the best in me, in society and in nature.”

Next, there will be a reading of four “Letters Home” sharing correspondence sent home from soldiers during World War II, The Korean War, The Vietnam War and The War in Afghanistan by presenter Marty Farrell.

Former U.S. Army Ranger 75th Ranger Regiment Grant McGarry will

give the keynote address.

McGarry, is a best-selling author of “A Night in the Pech Valley” and a combat veteran with five deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan in the War on Terror. Upon graduation in 2006 from the University of Alabama with a degree in finance, Grant reported to Fort Benning with an enlistment contract “for the hardest thing the Army has to offer.”

The program will then feature a “We Remember” video with moving images of past and present U.S. military service members. The event will close with a playing of “Taps” by Nick Amundson.

The Roswell Memorial Day service, the largest in Georgia, has been cancelled.

Chattahoochee national parklands begin reopening

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area has begun reopening areas previously closed for health and safety concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The national parkland borders the Chattahoochee River in areas of Sandy Springs, Roswell, Johns Creek and runs north into Forsyth County.

All park trails and river access were reopened on Monday, May 11 with waived entry fees. Some parking areas were reopened, including at the Abbotts, Medlock, Jones, Island Ford, Paces Mill, Powers Island, Akers Mill, Interstate North and Johnson Ferry North locations.

Picnic areas, shelters, comfort stations and the Hewlett Lodge Visitor Center remain closed.

“We welcome visitors back to the park to use the trails and river for recreation,” said Acting Superintendent Ann Honious. “Where parking areas remain closed or are full, we ask visitors to please park safely and legally, following all regulations, to assist in creating a safe visitor experience for all.”

Honious said the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is following guidelines from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state and local public health authorities for increasing access. It will implement a phased approached for reopening any remaining closures on a park-by-park basis.

Roswell lays plans to reopen city facilities

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The City of Roswell is bracing itself for reentry into life’s new normal.

At the May 11 City Council meeting, elected officials presented information on where the city currently stands with its closings and what may change in the coming days.

“While many have had time off and City Hall has been closed, our employees have been in City Hall anticipating the next move,” said Mayor Lori Henry. “Our employees were ahead of the curve as far as what we need to put in place, from the very beginning… It’s a very complex issue, but we are on top of it.”

City Administrator Gary Palmer said he has been meeting with each of the city’s department heads to determine what reentry will look like for them, and how it will affect citizens and the city.

They have also been working with neighboring cities on this issue.

Roswell has implemented several teams to handle the effects of COVID-19 and how city services may reopen to public visitation. Representatives from a range of departments, including Finance, Logistics, Communications, are sorting through the options.

“It’s worked very well for us,” Palmer said. “A lot of our surrounding jurisdictions have to come us for information.”

Henry herself started a Business Recovery Task Force in late April to analyze how various industries have been impacted and determine their short- and long-term needs. The task force is made up of about 20 members, including representatives from local small businesses, city staff, Roswell’s economic development arm, Roswell Inc, and the East Roswell Economic Action Committee.

The City Council also discussed the possibility of reopening parks and park facilities.

Roswell accounts for virus impact in FY 2021 budget

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The COVID-19 pandemic has forced cities like Roswell to completely reevaluate spending and economic priorities for the upcoming fiscal year.

“The economic issues are severe,” Mayor Lori Henry said at the preliminary budget presentation May 11. “We don’t know yet how deep or how long this recovery is going to be.”

Roswell’s budget team had nearly finished assembling its proposed plans for fiscal year 2021 in February when the pandemic hit.

It changed everything, said Budget Manager Harpreet Hora.

“The economy that was looking very positive a couple of months back is no longer so positive anymore,” she said.

“We’ve had to go back and change all of our revenue projections, the budget numbers, and what we were planning to fund.”

Hora and her team is bracing for a projected $9 million loss in revenue, the majority of which can be attributed to sales tax, which is expected to see a 10.4 percent drop in revenue.

These numbers and uncertainty have informed the priorities of the upcoming

year, namely, to focus on maintaining current levels of services and programs.

The budget team does not recommend increasing any employee compensation and anticipates a hiring freeze except for critical positions. The city currently employs 625 full-time positions.

The budget team also recommend deferring most maintenance and one-time capital requests, and Hora said they will be monitoring the situation each month to see if there are any changes or any requests could potentially gain funding in the future.

The upcoming fiscal year will see the first downward trend in the city’s funds since fiscal year 2015. Fiscal year 2021 is projected to net $147 million in revenues, down from $156 million in fiscal year 2020.

Despite a slight decline in property tax revenue because of COVID-19, the city’s millage rate is expected to stay at 4.955 mills, the same since fiscal year 2019, Hora said. One mill brings in $1 for every $1,000 of taxable value on a property.

The Heart of Roswell Park on Canton Street and all picnic pavilions, outdoor gym equipment and playgrounds remain closed.

In the meantime, Henry said the city

will continue to monitor the situation and keep in contact with state and federal officials daily for updates regarding COVID-19 and reintegration policies.

Georgia’s Public Health State of Emergency will continue through Friday June 12, and high-risk residents, including people 65 and older and those with chronic diseases, are still included in the shelter-in-place order.

Free COVID-19 testing for anyone, not just those suspected of having the illness, is now available in North Fulton at 4700 North Point Parkway, Alpharetta. People must call 404-613-8150 prior to appearing to schedule a testing appointment.

“If someone would have given me the choice of where to be during this pandemic, I would have chosen Roswell,” Henry said. “With the caliber of our staff, the preparedness of the City of Roswell, I feel very comfortable, as I always do, going forward.”

Early voting locations open for June 9 election FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Early voting for the June 9 Georgia Presidential Primary and Special Election began May 18 at a number of locations across North Fulton County.

Registered voters can visit polling stations through June 5. Special polling sites are open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and on Saturday, May 30. Early voting will not be held on Sundays or on Memorial Day. Votes cast during the early voting period and absentee ballots will be counted at the time of the June 9 election in accordance with Secretary of State guidelines.

Those visiting polling sites are asked to wear a face covering and practice social distancing out of consideration for fellow voters.

Alpharetta begins phased plan to open parks

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The City of Alpharetta announced May 12 a phased plan to restore operations and will begin reopening some public facilities this Friday. The city closed most of its facilities and has had most non-essential employees working remotely since March 15 in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“While the situation surrounding COVID-19 continues to evolve and makes it difficult to set hard deadlines for returning all of our operations to normal, we have created a plan that establishes benchmarks to be met in order to return our employees to the workplace, open specific facilities and restart some of our activities and programs,” Alpharetta Mayor Jim Gilvin said. “Those benchmarks ensure that we will move through each phase of the plan only as we can reasonably ensure the safety of the public and our employees.”

The benchmarks are based upon current guidance issued by the CDC and other public health agencies. They include items such as the ability to ensure social distancing, availability of critical cleaning supplies and sanitizers, as well as having safety protocols in place.

Beginning Friday, the following City of Alpharetta parks facilities will reopen to the public, provided that appropriate social distancing and other CDC guidelines are followed: • Tennis and pickleball courts • Athletic fields for non-organized play

Chambers team up to offer regional online job fairs

Sessions will target specific industries

NORTH METRO ATLANTA, Ga. — The resources of two area chambers of commerce have begun a collaboration to connect industries with potential labor forces in a series of virtual hiring events.

The Greater North Fulton Chamber and Forsyth County Chamber are hosting online events that will feature representatives from local employers who will briefly discuss open positions, qualifications and how job seekers can apply.

Attendees will also be able to participate in a break-out session with employers to ask questions about their company and specific opportunities.

“This is definitely new territory for all of us,” said Kali Boatright, president and CEO of the Greater North Fulton Chamber.

The Chamber’s focus over the past nine months, she said, has been launching and nurturing its new job website, northfultonjobs.com. Director of Economic and Talent Development Mark Goodman has been responsible for the launch and assisted in the collaboration with Forsyth County for the virtual job fair, Boatright said.

Right now, employers and employees are hurting, some industries more than others, Goodman said.

“Food service and hospitality is still kind of lagging behind,” he said. “The restaurants that do want to open are having struggles finding workers. Manufacturing and assembly work, they seem to be needing people.”

Construction seems to be the only sector that hasn’t slowed over the past couple of months, he added.

Boatright said she hopes the job fair will be one more tool the chamber can use to help get businesses back on track.

“So many of them, you know their hearts are broken that they have had to lay off or furlough employees,” she said.

“This really gives them an opportunity as they come back to be able to expand workforces if that’s what they need to do, but also for those employees to find solid, local jobs. That’s what we’re really working on and why we collaborated on this.”

Laura Stewart, vice president with the Forsyth County Chamber, said that since the pandemic hit in early March, the organization has stepped up efforts to regularly survey members to get a read on what types of assistance could be offered.

said the Chamber wanted to get ahead of the curve.

“Now, as businesses begin to reopen, we know that some of those employers are going to be looking to build back their workforce, and we are trying to give them a platform to do that.”

Prior to this season, the Forsyth Chamber had only dealt with in-person job fairs. How to execute one online was something different.

In a virtual setting, she said, it makes sense to split sessions by industry. Part of that is logistics — cyber sessions can be difficult to manage when the number of participants and interests are massive. Also, businesses are different, and certain employers are looking for specific skills in their applicants.

It just made sense to stagger the sessions by industry, Stewart said, because job seekers and employers would be of like mind when attending the online sessions.

“We partnered with our friends at the Greater North Fulton Chamber because we realized that employment doesn’t have county borders,” Stewart said.

The North Fulton Chamber has been a great partner and helped bring in a lot of employers and supply information on how to conduct an online job fair, she said.

There is no cost for job seekers or employers to participate.

The first session, which focused on manufacturing, was held May 15.

The keyboard expert If the coronavirus has shown us anything, there are far more epidemiologists, virologists and health experts in America than most could have ever imagined.

Well, if you consider the comments being JOE PARKER thrown around on Reporter joe@appenmediagroup.com social media, anyway.

It seems as if far more of those around us are experts on this new virus than those who actually hold positions or offices that deem them far more knowledgeable in such matters.

These newly minted health experts take up arms, in this case, keyboards, to combat these “so-called” experts at every turn. They dismiss anything they say that does not conform to what they want to hear. They label any article that does not paint a rosy outlook for the pandemic as “fearmongering,” regardless of what information the article contains.

Because of course, they know the truth.

They have turned heroes — those working to combat this virus head-on from behind desks, in hospitals and in laboratories — into villains.

But everyone is still entitled to their opinion, even if it has no factual basis.

And most of these statements and social media comments can be ignored, but those who are still spewing that COVID-19 is a “hoax,” or “basically the flu,” or “has only killed” what this person suggests is insignificant numbers, are despicable.

That is because there are people who see these comments who have

been impacted greatly by this virus and know a hell of a lot more about it than a twit belching out incredibly callous statements while hiding behind a keyboard.

And hiding they are, because I can simply not believe there are those in this world who could actually be so heartless as to say these things, face to face, to people who have been devastated by the virus.

Look Hilary New in the eye and tell her things are being “blown out of proportion.” Her 65-year old mother from Rome, Georgia, contracted the virus in early March. New’s mother told her to “pull the plug” if she had to be placed on a ventilator, and her daughter had to make the gut-wrenching decision to comply.

Tell Chanda Grubbs, a North Carolina woman who lost her husband and father of three children, Adrien, to coronavirus that the virus is “not a big deal.”

Face Linda Green and tell her “it’s pretty much just the flu.” Her 37-year old daughter Brent, a Georgia native and mother of twin 12-year old boys, died from coronavirus without having any preexisting conditions.

Call up Nancy Hopkins of South Carolina who was unable to visit or speak to her father in the hospital as he died from COVID-19 that it’s “just a hoax.”

Tell your neighbor that a virus that has killed 80,000 people in our nation alone, that these “so-called health experts” are fearmongering.

If a person can still stand by those statements as they meet those whose lives have been devastated by this impact, they are not an enlightened person. They are unbelievably callous.

And anyone who would say such things is damn sure not a health expert.

Local Girl Scouts give back

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — While COVID-19 has disrupted many camps and volunteer activities, two local Girl Scouts have

not let the pandemic stop them from serving their community.

When Aditi Mohan learned that after wearing masks all day long, healthcare workers’ ears become irritated, she came up with a solution: crocheted “ear savers.”

These short strips of yarn are worn behind the head so that facial masks can attach to buttons rather than a person’s ears. Mohan has made more than 200 and has delivered them to Georgia Clinic, Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Northside Hospital and Eastside Urgent Care.

“Everyone working on the frontline is taking an enormous personal risk for themselves and their families, and are demonstrating courage and benevolence,” Mohan said. “They are heroes and deserve our recognition and deepest gratitude.”

Mohan is working to grow her project across Georgia and into neighboring states.

Meanwhile, Himani Kalra, who like Mohan is a Girl Scout and member of Student Leadership Johns Creek, continues to work on her Gold Award project from home.

Kalra’s project is to raise public awareness about female gendercide. Female gendercide refers to the deliberate elimination of a female child, either before birth through sex-selective abortion or after birth by killing, abandonment or neglect.

Scouts: Continued from Page 12 Kalra said she saw the impacts of female gendercide when she visited a family in India, but last summer, when an infant girl was abandoned in Cumming, she realized this problem is not confined to one region of the world.

“It’s deeply impactful to know it’s happening here too,” she said. “It may seem like a far away problem, not really relevant to us, but in the long run it will impact everyone. It will literally destroy a society.”

Gendercide has claimed the lives of more than 160 million girls globally, according to the research of author and Pulitzer Prize finalist Mara Hvistendahl.

Kalra has worked to raise awareness of

COMMUNITY this problem, creating a video and website “Save the Girl Child.” Her Facebook platform “Every Girl Matters” now has more than 7,000 followers.

She has also distributed brochures, made public presentations and organized community letter drives that have delivered more than 500 cards with messages of support to girls rescued by the Invisible Girl Project. The nonprofit provides care for girls who were abandoned and are vulnerable to trafficking.

Realizing that tackling this problem involves not only raising awareness, but also actively working to empower young girls in underprivileged communities, Kalra created a “For the Love of Science” program for Asian immigrant girls in Clarkston, Ga. “One of the major reasons female gendercide happens is because girls aren’t as valued in society,” Kalra said. “Males

are the ones who provide for the family.

If girls are educated, they can find jobs, they can increase their status in society, and the mindset that causes female gendercide to happen can slowly decrease.”

Kalra has traveled to India and worked in the Bhalswa Slum District in Delhi, one of India’s poorest and most populous areas where infant girl mortality is over 65 percent. There, she distributed gendercide awareness fliers and care kits with books and hygiene supplies to families with girls.

Through fundraising, she has supported the creation of 10 rural village schools in India by the Ekal Foundation and for two medical camps in the Jahangirpur Village in India. Kalra has written articles about female gendercide for national and international media platforms and has been appointed Youth Brand Ambassador for the Invisible Girl Project.

Sports journalism students scramble with no games to cover

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH METRO ATLANTA — The coronavirus pandemic put a hard stop to sports at all levels in mid-March, leaving sports journalists out in the cold.

Filling TV airtime and newspaper pages without any games to cover, most seasoned writers have made due adjusting to the altered landscape. But with the complete absence of live games, those studying sports journalism in school are facing an added burden.

Carlo Finlay, assistant director of Grady Sports Media at the Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communication at UGA, said the adjustment for his classes been significant.

“It has been tough,” Finlay said. “Our first class, intro to sports journalism, is based on going to a sports game, and when that disappears, what do we do?”

Finlay said this semester had been building up to covering the NCAA Final Four Media Day in Atlanta, and the cancellation of the event was hard on his students.

“We have helped them come up with story ideas and did what we could, but without live sporting events, it’s not the same,” he said.

Amelia Ray Green, a 2018 graduate of Cambridge High School, is wrapping up her second year at the University of Georgia. She is a public relations major with an English minor and is pursuing a sports media certificate from UGA’s Grady College.

Along with her classmates, Green’s studies were completely altered by the cancellation and postponement of sports seasons. Instead of covering live events, Green compiled pieces on prior seasons, created an infographic and story on Baylor’s men’s basketball and compiled an article on the impact to senior runners in Blessed Trinity’s track and field program.

However, those assignments do not fully replace covering live events.

“Nothing can match or compare with the real-life experience of sports,” Green said. “That’s the point of going to things

like [the Final Four media day] and games. You learn so much from talking to people and by doing and learning from your mistakes.”

Recently, most of her time has been spent polishing pieces she had compiled before the pandemic.

Green credited her instructors for pivoting the curriculum on almost no notice.

“The professors did a good job of helping us continue developing our skills,” she said. “UGA itself has done an outstanding job in handling this situation.”

The pandemic’s impact to Green’s education extends beyond the classroom.

She applied for 10 summer internships.

All of them have been nixed.

Cecily Stoute, a sophomore at UGA and graduate of Chattahoochee High School, had a slew of events set for the spring, from the Final Four media day to Atlanta United matches, UGA women’s basketball games and UGA gymnastics meets.

“My sports reporting class was directly affected,” Stoute said. “It pretty much caused a halt in all our upcoming projects.”

As a substitute, Green reported on factors and critical stats that led to the success of LSU men’s basketball in the abbreviated 2019-20 season, and she wrote a piece on how three former Chattahoochee football players are dealing

with the pandemic.

Stoute said she was drawn to sports journalism to keep in the game if she decides not to extend her athletic career to the professional level. In addition to covering sports, Stoute is a defender on the women’s soccer team at UGA. “Honestly, that has been the toughest part from this whole thing,” she said.

“Having no clue when we can go back to training is really hard. I don’t have many resources, and there is only so much you can do on your own when soccer is a team sport. I definitely miss my team and our field.”

As all sports fans await the return of all live sports, Green is ready to jump back into what she believes will be a reinvigorated sports atmosphere.

“I’ve come to realize that sports is so much more than numbers and how athletes perform,” Green said. “It’s the community glue for some cities, and now more than ever we need that sense of belonging. I think things will come back stronger than before, and all this anticipation will pay off. Everyone has had a lot of time to think about things, and I think that will be really beneficial for the sports world. Whether its those in sports media, sports journalists, or just the athletes themselves, this is going to give them a lot more motivation.”

Conner Riley Kendall

SSgt Conner Riley Kendall, 26, of Ray City, Ga., passed away on May 7, 2020, from injuries sustained in an accident. He was born in East Point, Ga., to Christopher Jon Kendall, Sr., and Shannon Lynn Freeze McPeek.

He was a proud member of the 723rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Moody Airforce Base (GA), where he worked on the Pavehawk Helicopter as an Avionics Mechanic. Conner first developed his love for the Air Force through his involvement with Civil Air Patrol. He was a member of “The Flying 45th” cadet squadron in Sandy Springs where he earned the Billy Mitchell Award.

In 2014, Conner enlisted in the United States Air Force. Upon his graduation from Basic Military Training and technical school, Conner was stationed at Kadina Air Force Base, Okinawa, Japan, where he worked as an avionics mechanic on the C-130 air frame. Throughout his brief military career, Conner received several

citations and awards. Most recently, he was awarded The Air Force Commendation Medal (posthumous) for meritorious service.

Conner deeply loved his family, his friends, and his country. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Gary Freeze. Survivors include his father and step-mother, Chris and Ellen Kendall, Sr., Alpharetta, Ga.; mother Shannon McPeek (Brent), Grand Prairie, Texas; sisters, Rebecca Kendall of Savannah, Ga., Jordan and Addison Tribble of Grand Prairie, Texas; brother, Christopher Kendall, Jr., of Alpharetta; paternal grandparents, Dennis and Nancy Kendall of Newnan, Ga., and maternal grandmother, Sandra Marvin (Charles) of Peachtree City, Ga. Full military honors will be rendered at a later time in Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, Ga. The Kendall and McPeek families are being served by the caring staff of Music Funeral Services of Valdosta, Ga.

She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Mercer University. She also attended Athens Area Technical Institute and received an Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy. She loved all animals and at one time owned a horse named Charanda, and many dogs throughout her life.
