Jewelry store employee falls victim to fraud call ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Scammers posing as executives for Piercing Pagado duped a manager of the jewelry store’s North Point Circle location out of nearly $2,500 in cash and gift cards March 27. The victim reported the fraud on March 29 and told police someone called the Alpharetta store and identified himself as a company executive doing a financial audit. The caller told the store manager he needed to be issued a $1,335 gift card. He also instructed the manager to deposit $1,075 in cash to a Wells Fargo account to cover for misappropriated funds. The manager said the caller sounded legitimate, according to police. The employee issued the gift card and made the cash deposit. Store security officials later realized both the phone call and bank account information were fraudulent. Police said by then, the gift card had already been used on the company’s website.
Man robbed at gunpoint outside Bank of America
ROSWELL, Ga. — A man cashed his paycheck at the Bank of America along Alpharetta Highway and was confronted by a gunman in the parking lot March 30. The victim said the suspect approached him as he got in his car and demanded his cash, saying “give me the money.” The suspect pulled a handgun from his hip and held it toward the ground. The victim gave the gunman the $1,200 he’d just withdrawn from the bank, and the suspect fled in a late-model Ford Explorer. Police responded to the bank, and the victim gave officers a description of the alleged robber.

Woman reports assault after argument over debt ROSWELL, Ga. — Police responded to a Studio 6 motel along Old Dogwood Road on March 31 after a woman claimed she was attacked over an unpaid debt. The victim claimed she was walking near the Economy Hotel next door when she encountered the suspect, a woman to whom she owed money. They began arguing about the money the victim owed and the suspect allegedly punched her three times in the face, then pushed her into a dumpster. The woman gave police a description of her attacker. Officers searched the two motels and the surrounding area but were unable to locate the suspect.
Teens robbed, assaulted near apartment complex
ROSWELL, Ga. — Two 14-year-olds were reportedly robbed at gunpoint and pistol-whipped late April 1 during an encounter at an apartment complex along Roswell Creek Circle. Police responded to the complex early the morning of April 2. One of the boys said he and his friend were walking through a cut-way when a man and woman armed with a gun robbed them. The teen said the suspects stole their cell phones and his backpack, pistolwhipped him, fired a gunshot in their direction and chased them from the scene. Police went back to the scene and recovered the teen’s empty backpack.
Burglar damages ATM on Old Milton Parkway
ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police were dispatched to a theft in progress call early April 5 at the Chase Bank on Old Milton Parkway where someone reportedly tried to pry open an ATM machine. Police described the suspect’s vehicle as a Dodge Ram with a camper top that had damage to the back glass. An officer spotted the abandoned vehicle wrecked a short distance from the bank. At the bank, police found the ATM lying face down with tinted tempered glass around

Roswell City Council expands restaurant district By ZOE SEILER newsroom@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell City Council voted April 12 to expand the city’s Canton Street Restaurant District east another block along Oak Street. The move adds more dining and nightlife amenities to one of North Fulton County’s most popular venues. The Canton Street Restaurant District currently includes Oak Street east to Bush Street. The council’s action expands the district farther east to Forrest Street. Within the restaurant district, businesses with an alcohol license are allowed to sell alcohol for carry out, allowing customers to take alcohol off of the premises of the restaurant. This is not the same as an open container law, City Attorney David Davidson said. It does not allow customers to drink the alcohol while in public. “It’s not a free for all,” Davidson said. “It’s basically if you have an alcohol license, you can serve somebody a drink and they can carry it outside of your establishment within this area.” The council action drew some cautionary words from Roswell resident and businesswoman Janet Russell, who raised concerns at the prospect of people
carrying out alcohol from a restaurant and drinking it while walking along Ga. 9 and to City Hall on Hill Street, which is now included in the district. Davidson reiterated that the resolution only applies to restaurants that serve alcohol, and there are other laws in place, like public intoxication laws, that deal with drinking alcohol in public spaces. “But all it is, it’s for the business. It’s not for the person walking with the drink,” Davidson said. Russell was also concerned about people who have had too much to drink walking across Ga. 9 without waiting for a signal. “I’m just real concerned about this constant expansion,” Russell said. “I understand it’s only for the restaurant and what you’re doing is relieving them of liability. But it’s not relieving anybody else of liability.” City Councilman Mike Palermo later clarified that the district does not go up to Hugo’s Oyster Bar or north of that, as this restaurant was mentioned throughout public comment. He said the district basically ends at the Georgia’s Own Credit Union. Councilman Matt Judy said, at the March 24 Community Development and
Transportation Committee Regular Meeting, that he was contacted by a few of the businesses in the Oak Street area to extend the district. Oak Street is an up-and-coming area with Oak Street Bottle Shop, The Whiskey Project, Zuzu Pizza and Gate City’s new tasting room that’s coming soon, Judy said. “I believe this will allow us to continue to attract business to the area over there and keep the area vibrant,” Judy said.

Fetch Park to open in mid to late June for man’s best friend By TIFFANY MORGAN newsroom@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Just in time for warmer weather, a new business, geared toward animal lovers, is opening in Alpharetta. Fetch Park, 11440 Maxwell Road, is set to open mid to late June. The park will feature outdoor amenities like TV, Wi-Fi, cooling stations, and a dog bath area. The park will feature “Bark Rangers” to “ensure the dogs are playing nicely.” Stephen Ochs, founder and CEO of Fetch Park, said opening Fetch has been his dream for some time. The Alpharetta location will be the second park to open with Ochs’ concept. Ochs has been a dog person his entire life. His parents bred dogs, and he developed a love for the animals early on. Ochs first came up with the concept when, while attending a baseball game, he saw a family rope off their tailgate area to let their dogs run. That was his “aha” moment. With little reference material to base his idea on, Ochs said he continued working on a concept. He was rejected by 86 banks when looking for funding. But he persisted, and he is excited to see his brand built from the ground up. “I knew this is what I wanted to do, I knew it would be successful and I was going to do whatever it took to make it happen,” Ochs said. “I’m extremely lucky that I get to spend my days outside surrounded by pups.” His first location is at Old Fourth Ward and has been open for over three years. The concept of the park in Alpharetta will go into what Ochs called “Phase Two,” which will offer two beach volleyball courts, food truck lane, on-leash dog patio, shaded
seating, and additional amenities with the large space being constructed. The park will also provide a vintage Airstream equipped with a selection of beer, wine and spirits, as well as a complete coffee selection with exclusive blends, which Ochs said is the “Fetch staple” and “crown jewel” of the park. Entry to Fetch is free, with a membership system for dogs. The daily cost for the park is $10 but there will be monthly and annual memberships to select. All canines are required to have up-todate vaccinations on file (DHLPP, Bordetella, and rabies) and be spayed or neutered if 8 months of age or older to enter the property, according to Fetch Parks website. Janet Rodgers, Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau president and CEO, said they are excited to have Fetch Park coming to Alpharetta. “Fetch Park adds to our wonderful selection of attraction offerings that brings both locals and visitors to have fun in our city,” she said. “I’ve seen a tremendous

Office Evolution enters Roswell office space market By ZOE SEILER newsroom@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell residents Jackie Blyth-Gottlieb and Mark Gottlieb have found their niche after opening a business that changes the office landscape. Office Evolution, a coworking space, has had consistent clients since the beginning of the year, and Mark feels optimistic about the future. “There’s gonna be a shift towards this type of use from the old standard office situations going forward, not just because of the pandemic, but because of what’s transpired because of the pandemic,” Mark said. Office Evolution is based out of Denver, Colo., and has 75 locations across the country. Three locations are in Roswell, Alpharetta and Johns Creek. “We’ve been around this area for a long time, in the Roswell area, so we have a lot of connections, so it’s been good being here locally,” Mark said. Office Evolution operates 24/7, and members are given a fob to access the building. Members can also use any Office Evolution facility across the country.
The Gottliebs closed on their building in July and opened the business in November. Mark said it was nerve-racking closing on a property in the middle of a pandemic. “Even though it was obviously rough opening during the pandemic, I think [with] the market shifting towards our product, we’ve been fortunate,” he said. “We’ve had a really good January, February, March and start of April.” The couple is fortunate to open in Georgia in the sense that people are allowed to work in offices. Some states, like New York and California, have greater restrictions. The space houses a variety of businesses, like a South African macadamia nut farmer, a chiropractor, a massage therapist and lawyers, Mark said. The goal is to create an environment where the entrepreneurs can work together and refer to businesses in the coworking space. Jackie said it’s been fun watching the business unfold. She said she enjoys seeing clients come together as a community, build business with each other and hang out together outside of the office.
Office Evolution has 36 offices, 24 of them occupied, as some open spaces and meeting rooms. “We have TV hookups, obviously high speed internet, a whiteboard for working, brainstorming and then we have a big 1,000 foot room that can accommodate 25 plus people,” Mark said. The large meeting room hasn’t been utilized a lot due to COVID-19 but once people are vaccinated and things open up more, Mark thinks that space will be used often. Most people wear masks while in the building, unless they are in a closed office. Tables in the open areas are spaced 6 feet apart and have plastic shields. “We recommend that they do [wear a mask], but some don’t, just like everywhere else you go in Georgia, they don’t always do that,” Jackie said. “If people are keeping their distance, then we’re not going to get too crazy about it and most of the time people keep their distance.” Surfaces in the open spaces and offices are immediately sanitized after people leave. The Gottliebs also installed an ionic filtration system that kills viruses, bacteria and molds, and they use a sanitation spray that kills germs and

City of Roswell selects fire chief By ZOE SEILER newsroom@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The City of Roswell has hired a new fire chief to assume duties from Ricky Burnette who retired. Joe Pennino will assume command of the department on June 1. Pennino worked with the Largo Fire Rescue in Florida for over 18 years and served in almost every capacity from firefighter to interim fire chief. He has served as the department’s deputy fire chief since
2017 and has overseen five operational divisions, helped improve the department’s response times, conducted an organizational analysis and served as Largo’s incident commander. “I am excited to join the talented team of professionals at the Roswell Fire Department and to be a part of the City of Roswell’s bright future,” Pennino said in a statement. Pennino also has a doctorate in public administration from Valdosta State University and a master’s degree in public policy
from Liberty University in Virginia. Additionally, he serves as an adjunct instructor at Liberty University where he teaches fire service leadership and public administration ethics, statesmanship and governance. The Roswell Fire Department has 210 employees with more than180 firefighters and seven fire stations. “The Roswell Fire Department is composed of the best firefighters our region has to offer and has a long history of solid professional leadership,” City Administrator Gary Palmer said. “We knew going into
this recruitment we would have our work cut out for us finding the right leader, the right chief for the Roswell Fire Department. I am confident we found that leader and chief with Joe Pennino.” Mayor Lori Henry also extended a warm welcome to Pennino ahead of his first day on the job. “We are looking forward to Chief Pennino joining the City of Roswell and leading our fire department,” Henry said. “I know with his experience and education that he will be a great leader for our firefighters.” Burnette served as fire chief for six years. He contracted the coronavirus last summer and survived a long and arduous recovery, which included time in intensive care.

Legion Box Program keeps troops in the minds of residents By TIFFANY MORGAN newsroom@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — With a virus and a border situation drawing most of their attention, many Americans may forget the troops serving overseas. For Roger Wise, a U.S. Army veteran who served in the 1960s, says receiving a letter while in the platoon was a big deal. A lot of his platoon mates were not so lucky receiving handwritten letters. Wise took the initiative to send the addresses of those not receiving mail to his mother, who had her Sunday school class write letters expressing their appreciation. Wise said it lifted the morale considerably. Receiving letters is still a big deal to the troops, Wise said. In 2004, American Legion Post 201 in Alpharetta began mailing out letters and care packages to troops. Steve Olesnevich — Steve “O” — is the man behind the scenes, packaging all the boxes and mailing them out to local troops. The boxes that are sent out to the troops are uniform dimensions; 12 inches by12 inches by 6 inches. Boxes cost $20 to ship, and Post 201 accepts donations for items and the cost of postage. The packages contain sweets — cookies, bubble gum and other candy — books, movies and letters. The post has mailed out more than 10,000 boxes since the program was established. Steve “O” said the program took on a life of its own. “No one knew what to do to support our troops in harm’s way, so we decided to send stuff to Georgia troops,” Steve “O” said. “Some troops
had to let their belt buckles out a notch or two, a very good thing.” Wise’s granddaughter, Caroline, who is in kindergarten, rallied her class to raise money for two care packages. They also took the time to write letters to the troops.
One box from Caroline’s class donations will go to a service member in the Navy and another will go to an Army service member. After Caroline presented Steve “O”

to moving it to the other side of Highway 9, but I’m really glad this council ultimately unanimously supported it.” The district had included part of Oak Street but not the whole street nor all of the businesses located on the road. “I think like half of the block didn’t get included for some reason, so this would take it all the way down to Forrest ,and that would include all of the businesses that are located [there] without any doubt,” Assistant City Attorney Bob Hulsey said at the March 24 meeting. “So I think it’s just to clarify things and to add that last piece.”

He was inducted into the Georgia Military Veterans’ Hall of Fame in 2019. The nonprofit organization honors Georgia military veterans for their accomplishments. Up to three inductees can be Medal of Honor recipients. Wise said he was humbled to be inducted. “I never dreamed of anything like this,” he said. But one of Wise’s proudest accomplishments is his granddaughter.
