ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Alpharetta Police Department announced “with great sadness” that Karlo, a 6-year-old German shepherd, died unexpectedly Dec. 29.

Department officials shared the sad news on their social media pages Dec. 29, revealing that Karlo suffered an allergic reaction to anesthesia during a teeth cleaning.

Karlo began his stint with Alpharetta’s canine ranks in February 2014. His handler was Lt. Ronald Splawn.

“The doctor’s office did everything they could to save Karlo

but he did not survive,” the post stated. “We are very thankful for K9 Karlo and are our hearts are with Lt. Splawn.”

Nearly 200 people expressed condolences on the department’s Facebook page.

The Roswell Police Department also shared the post with sympathies for Karlo’s loss.

“The men and women of the Roswell Police Department join the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety in mourning the sudden loss of K9 Karlo,” the agency stated.

Weapons found in car leads to two arrests ROSWELL, Ga. — Police tried three times to conduct a traffic stop on a Mercedes Benz spotted traveling along Warsaw Road with a suspended license plate Dec. 21.

According to police, the vehicle fled through the parking lot of an Olive Garden, sped onto Sway Road and came to an abrupt stop along Holcomb Bridge Road.

Officers found a 9mm pistol, an AR15, marijuana and Ecstasy pills in the car, according to the arrest report. The three occupants were taken into custody for questioning. Two of them were arrested.

Anthony Trae Welles, 26, of Greenhouse Drive, Roswell, was booked on charges of possession of MDMA, possession of marijuana, obstruction of law enforcement officers and possession of firearm during commission of a felony.

Alexander Steven Brown, 35, of Lenox Road, Atlanta, was charged with driving while suspended or revoked license, felony fleeing and attempting to elude, driving with no insurance, suspended registration and obstruction of law enforcement officers.

A 19-year-old Roswell teen who was a passenger in the vehicle was released to his mother after being questioned by police, the report stated.

Hector Gonzalez-Palacios, 31, of Eagles Crest Village Lane, Roswell, was arrested Dec. 21 on Alpharetta Highway for DUI, driving while unlicensed and failure to yield to oncoming traffic.

Anthony Trae Welles, 26, of Greenhouse Drive, Roswell, was arrested Dec. 21 on Holcomb Bridge Road for possession of MDMA, possession of marijuana, obstruction of law enforcement officers and possession of firearm during commission of a felony.

Donaldson Nelson, 30, of Brook View Ave., Doraville, was arrested Dec. 28 on Holcomb Bridge Road for DUI and improper lane change.

Burglar removes window to gain entry to liquor store ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta police responded to a commercial burglary at the Old Milton Beverage liquor store along Old Milton Parkway on Dec. 22.

According to the incident report, a glass window pane next to the front door had been pushed out. Security cams showed a suspect using tools to remove weather stripping around the pane. The burglar then pushed the glass pane out of the way and crawled military style into the building. The suspect crawled to each register, removing $430 in cash from each one, stole $2,000 from a cash

Death threat reported at Roswell apartment ROSWELL, Ga. — Police were dispatched to The Crossings at Holcomb Bridge on Dec. 22 after a threatening note was left at the front door.

According to the incident report, the complainant said there was an “aggressive knock” at the door. When residents opened the door, a message handwritten on a piece of notebook paper fell to the ground. The note, which appeared to be written by a child, stated “I’m coming for you Die!” and had a drawing at the bottom. The note was directed to an 11-year-old boy living in the home, the report stated.

The boy told police he didn’t know who would’ve sent the note.

The suspect stole cigarette cartons and cigarillos near the register, then crawled to the manager’s office. There the offender picked the lock to the office and stole $14,367 in cash then crawled to the front of the store and loaded liquor bottles into a bag. The suspect then stood up, ran to grab another box of cigarettes and more cigarillos, then exited the building through the window pane, the report stated.

The owner said $17,727 in cash and at least $3,032 worth of inventory was stolen. Investigators were unable to identify the suspect, who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt tightly drawn around their face to the point only their eyes could be seen, the report stated.

First in line for COVID-19 vaccine, physicians urge continued vigilance Alpharetta A LOOK AHEAD

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH METRO ATLANTA, Ga. — While COVID vaccine distribution continues to roll out across the state, healthcare experts are cautioning this is no time to let up.

The warning comes as Gov. Brian Kemp outlined the second phase of vaccine rollout to long-term care facilities.

Speaking at a press conference Dec. 28 in Gainesville, Kemp said sections of the state continue to see a spike in COVID cases, and he urged all Georgians to remain vigilant.

“COVID-19 is still here, and it still presents a threat to the people of our great state,” Kemp said. The state is working to set up temporary facilities at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta to help relieve patient surges at hospitals, he said.

Meanwhile, local healthcare workers have been lining up to receive their vaccinations to continue their frontline service.

Dr. Lori Randall, a physician with Ravry Medical Group in Sandy Springs, said she received the Moderna vaccine Dec. 29, and she expects to receive the second dose in about four weeks.

Randall is part of the Northside Hospital System and was notified through email of her eligibility.

The Roswell resident is a general practitioner at Ravry and treats an array of ailments. Right now, she said, the practice is handling clients with COVID or who have exposure to the virus through telemed. The vast majority of all other patients are seen in person, with staff and visitors donning masks.

“I do think the universal masking in healthcare that kicked in maybe a couple of weeks into the pandemic, that definitely helped a ton,” Randall said. “The non-urgent healthcare places that were staying open early on where masking was not universal were having some issues with patients and healthcare workers getting infected, but that has gotten a lot better.”

Randall said Ravry has had no issues with patients or staff contracting the virus, although they do offer telemed to patients who want to exercise added caution.

Receiving the vaccine has not moved her to let her guard down.

She said there are countless reasons to continue safety protocols even after vaccination. While both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are effective, 95 percent is not perfect, she said.

“If healthcare workers are unmasked, then up to 5 percent of us could end up getting symptomatic COVID infection,” she said.

A bigger issue, Randall said, is that there is no data on whether those vaccinated can transmit the virus. Best estimates now are that when 70 percent of the population is vaccinated, the risk of transmission will fall dramatically, she said.

Her family will have to wait for their turn.

“For now, I have boys that are 3 and 5, I have a husband that works from home…and for us, in terms of getting

back to normal, doing the things we miss, it’s going to be a while.”

Dr. Asma Agad, a certified nurse anesthetist with Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sandy Springs, was part of a team of specialists who prepared the Pfiser vaccine for distribution to healthcare workers. The Alpharetta resident received her vaccine last week.

Agad said Emory had set up an efficient system composed of certified professionals for unpacking, preparing and administering the vaccine.

The product, which must be kept at or below -76 F, first must be thawed, then diluted before being administered. The whole process, following thawing, can take no more than six hours, Agad said.

She estimates Emory Hospital System was performing more than 2,000 vaccinations a day, running from early morning into the evening.

“My fear is people are assuming that with the vaccine, you don’t have to wear a mask, you still don’t have to do the precautions,” Agad said. “But the vaccine is only 95 percent effective, and you can still get COVID with the vaccine. I think the public should be educated about that.”

By the time the vaccine rolls out for general distribution, she said, she hopes everyone will be on board with continuing the safety protocols.

“I’ve had people ask me why do you still wear a mask?” she said. “Well, I’ve only gotten the one dose, and I could still get COVID, and I could still pass it easily to you. I don’t want people to get the vaccine and feel like [they] don’t need to wash hands or wear a mask.”

METRO ATLANTA, Ga. — Residents of senior living facilities are stepping up for the first round of COVID-19 vaccine.

The Village Park Senior Living and Corso Atlanta communities were among the first in Georgia to receive the vaccines.

More than 95 percent of the residents in Galerie Living communities in Alpharetta, Milton and Peachtree Corners opted to receive the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

Village Park Peachtree Corners was the first, with distribution on Dec. 23. Marketing Director Emily Hamrin said residents felt relieved and hopeful.

Then, in March, COVID-19 cases were detected in Georgia and everything changed.

Our nation had not faced a deadly pandemic in more than 100 years, so there was no proven blueprint for governments to follow. As the City of Alpharetta worked with county, state and federal authorities to coordinate efforts and create emergency policies, the people of Alpharetta took unprecedented precautions to protect themselves and their neighbors.

Alpharettans immediately started following the Centers for Disease Control recommendations to combat the disease and “flatten the curve.” People stopped shaking hands and began using hand sanitizer throughout the day when washing their hands was not possible.

Families began self-quarantining, and businesses avoided large gatherings of employees. Working from home became the new normal as companies made employee safety their top priority.

Churches, restaurants, stores and hotels closed to the public.

Fortunately, the precautions taken in those early days prevented the horrific projections of the time from becoming reality. Local hospitals were never overwhelmed, and over the last nine months the City of Alpharetta has consistently had one of the lowest rates of infection in Fulton County.

However, even the drastic precautions we took could not completely protect us from the devastating effects

Roswell continues effort to overcome COVID challenges 2020 was a year like no other in our lifetime. COVID-19 drastically changed how we live, how we work, and how we interact with one another. As we begin 2021, there is hope and light at the end LORI HENRY of a very long tunCity of Roswell Mayor nel with two vaccines being distributed worldwide. We are all hearing this winter will be one of the hardest we’ve experienced because of COVID-19. Unfortunately, the numbers across the United States, including Georgia, are rising. Since the outbreak this past spring, the City of Roswell is doing everything it can within the law to do our part in slowing the spread in our community. As your mayor, the health, safety and welfare of our residents is always my first priority.

We have taken the CDC guidelines and recommendations from the Georgia Department of Health very seriously these past months. While we have had to modify how we do business in our city facilities, city employees have continued to deliver the high-quality services you have come to expect and deserve. Excellent customer service is something the city prides itself on, even during these trying times. In mid-March I formed an internal COVID task force and meet with this group regularly to review the latest COVID-19 data from Georgia Department of Health and the Atlanta/Fulton County Health Department, along with Gov. Brian Kemp’s executive orders. This information helps guide decisions about what to include in my executive orders.

We have also continued our commit-

ment to open transparent government by holding our public meetings through Zoom and inviting residents who would like to comment on agenda items to join the mayor and council meetings from the comfort of their own homes. Our goal is to make attending these meetings as convenient as possible for you. We also live stream them on Facebook, YouTube and roswellgov.com, so even if you do not want to speak directly to mayor and council, you can watch the meetings and keep up to date on what is happening with your city government.

While COVID changed how we do business and, in some cases, deliver services, the city did move forward on a number of important initiatives.

Business Recovery Task Force — To help address the fallout of COVID 19 for our local businesses, I formed a Business Recovery Task Force made up of local business owners, Roswell Inc and the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

As you all know, the business community has been hit especially hard by the virus. Many of our restaurants and retail establishments had to close in-person dining and shopping for months. The subsequent restrictions in the governor’s orders have also had an impact on our local businesses. I’m working with this group to create business opportunities and make suggestions on how to do business differently to make it through these trying times.

One of the initiatives to come out of this task force is the “Come Back Safely Pledge Campaign.” The pledge is a promise from businesses, residents and visitors to assure their neighbors and the broader community that they will take necessary precautions, like washing or sanitizing hands, following physical-

distancing guidelines, wearing face coverings/masks, and staying home when feeling ill. So far, hundreds of people and businesses have taken the pledge.

Mayor’s Racial Equity Advisory Committee — Following the protests over racial inequity this past spring, I formed the Mayor’s Racial Equality Advisory Committee consisting of a diverse cross section of people from our community.

The committee is meeting every couple of weeks when schedules allow. The Advisory Committee will be determining its

own goals and is committed to examining areas where improvements can be made to advance racial equity within the community. I am looking forward to continuing the conversation and identifying areas where racial inequities need to be addressed and where there are opportunities to drive change.

Coffee shop looks to add location in tough year for small businesses

On the wall is a menu that includes items named “GA 400 Blend,” “Snowpocalypse” and “Downtown Connector.”

It’s clear you’re in a coffee shop for the community.

Although many small businesses have closed or otherwise cut operations in 2020 due to the pandemic, Peach Coffee Roasters, a cafe and roastery in Johns Creek, has continued to engage with residents and organizations through its quality coffee.

Peach Coffee Roasters, located at 10875 Jones Bridge Road, is the only Georgia coffee shop to have one of its coffees selected as a finalist for the 2021 Good Food Awards, which takes place later this month. The small business has also continued to partner with organizations — including the Atlanta Humane Society, the Howard School and the Drake House — that share their community-giving mindset. A second location, in Alpharetta’s Henderson Commons Shopping Center, is underway pending rezoning to allow for a drive-through.

“We want to meet people where they are,” co-founder David Pittman said. “We invest in the community, and when the pandemic hit, the community invested in us. There’s going to be good times and bad times for all of us. When COVID hit, there was a call to help small businesses, and the community has been nothing short of amazing.”

The shop’s Good Food Awards finalist is its Costa Rica Cordillera de Fuego coffee, which it purchases from Costa Rican coffee farmer Luis Eduardo Campos.

Peach Coffee Roasters is a Johns Creek-based cafe and roastery that opened in 2018.

According to Pittman, who previously served in the military and worked for several other Atlanta coffee shops, Peach Coffee Roasters’ goal when choosing and roasting coffee beans is to pick the green, or unroasted, coffee that highlights specific countries or regions. The shop purchases beans from countries including Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Ethiopia.

“We want to create coffee that we believe represents the origin of where it came from and something that the consumer can resonate with,” Pittman said.

When Peach Coffee Roasters’ team, which includes Pittman, co-founder Landon Bonner and a team of coffeegrading staff, was trying out coffee from Costa Rica, they’d gotten through 30–40 samples when they hit one — Campos’ Costa Rican coffee — that they just knew was a special coffee, Pittman said.

Pittman and Bonner are Q Graders, those certified to be able to grade and score coffee through smell and taste.

There are only 400 Q Graders in the United States.

coffee stood out because it had a fruitiness, silkiness, sweetness and complexity that “creates a sensory experience where everything just came together,” Pittman said.

Once the team selects coffee beans, team members develop a complex, formulaic method of roasting the beans based on each coffee’s unique attributes.

Pittman said the roasting process, which takes around 10 minutes, is analogous in some ways to caramelizing sugar.

Although several coffees created by Peach Coffee Roasters have won local and national awards, Pittman said the business “doesn’t get their validation from the coffee” but from “how we treat people and how we treat customers.”

Peach Coffee Roasters hires and serves on seven core values that spell out the acronym “PEACHES.” In addition to goals around environmental and social responsibility, one of the business’ key values is community involvement.

Even as the pandemic has isolated most, Peach Coffee Roasters has continued to partner with community organizations. Each month, the coffee shop donates to a local cause. For December, 3 percent of sales went to the Atlanta Humane Society. And 1 percent of the shop’s 2020 proceeds will go to the conservation group Chattahoochee Riverkeeper.

Pittman said Peach Coffee Roasters does what it can to help the community, and the community has helped them get through the pandemic.

This month, the Alpharetta Planning Commission will consider the Peach Coffee Roasters drive-through proposal in that city.

Don’t discard your classic lamps they can be instantly updated with new shades, consider changing the shape, color and texture when selecting a new shade.

Wall coverings have made a welcomed return to the well appointed home, making a perfect addition to the powder room walls. Subtle patterns and textured papers will create a beautiful ambiance to your dinning room walls.

Local legislators serve up priorities for 2021 session

By JEFFREY ALBERTSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Gold Dome will be flush with issues when the 156th Georgia General Assembly gavels in for a 40-day session on Jan. 11.

Among the key matters legislators will address this session are whether to restore $2.2 billion in cuts to the fiscal year 2021 budget.

The $25.9 billion budget signed by Gov. Brian Kemp in August represented the steepest cuts the state has imposed since the height of the Great Recession. About $1 billion in funding was cut from schools and the Georgia Department of Education.

Later this year, the Legislature will take up redistricting — redrawing state and federal legislative districts — after the 2020 Census data is available. By controlling both chambers in the assembly, Republicans will have the upper hand in how districts are redrawn. Democrats had hoped to cut into the Republican majority in the House in November but fell short in statewide races.

Republicans hold a 12-seat lead in the Senate and a 26-seat lead in the House.

Sen. John Albers (R-Roswell) is focusing on a $2,000 pay increase for teachers, a senior citizen school tax exemption and keeping Georgia’s economy strong against the pandemic.

He says he is focusing on final passage of the Max Gruyer Act, meant to end fraternity hazing.

“Unfortunately, some hazing rituals at colleges and universities across the country have caused injuries or even deaths,” Albers said. “One such victim was Max Gruver, a Roswell native who passed away following a ritual who this bill is named after to honor his legacy.”

Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick (R-Marietta), whose District 32 encompasses part of Sandy Springs, said her attention is directed to controlling COVID-19, the economic fallout on small businesses and families and healthcare.

“I am working on two insurance reform bills and two healthcare bills left over from last year,” Kirkpatrick said.

“One is a patient safety bill, and one is about patient brokering in the mental health and substance abuse industry.”

Rep. Mary Robichaux (D-Roswell) said healthcare access, education, economic recovery and stability are her top issues. Food and housing security will be of additional focus.

Plans are in the works to file legislation related to healthcare and the microbrewery industry.

“One specific bill proposes to extend the payment structure for telemedicine services that have been proven a very effective and efficient delivery model through this pandemic, and I want to make sure that appropriate reimbursement continues and look for additional ways this innovative system can be utilized,” Robichaux said.

A second proposal would require a comprehensive review before healthcare

Longing for the old Brandon Beach When I was 8 years old, I saved up about $150 to buy one of my dad’s newspaper boxes from him, one of those heavy metal boxes that you’d put 50 cents in and buy a newspaper. Once I’d sold 300 newspapers, I’d be making a profit.

Instead of selling lemonade, I’d sell newspapers, just like my dad.

Once I saved up enough money to buy a box, the question then became where to put it. I needed to find a place with plenty of foot traffic, close enough to ride my bike to, that had an owner that would help me keep an eye on it.

My dad knew just the place.

I remember walking into a sandwich

shop across from Alpharetta City Hall with him to ask the owner for permission to put my box outside his restaurant.

The restaurant was called Nantucket and the owner’s name was Brandon Beach.

Brandon was an Alpharetta City Councilman back before Alpharetta was Alpharetta. He’d go on to run the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce for over a decade and most recently was elected to the State Senate and is chair of the influential Transportation Committee.

I went off to college, and my little newspaper box is long gone. We still have some scattered around town, but Nantucket, the old City Hall and Alpharetta’s quiet downtown are long gone, too.

I came back home to work in our family newspaper company, and Brandon and I have crossed paths many times since. I’ve gotten to know him outside of the context of the man who owned the restaurant my newspaper box stood in front of.

Democratic Rep.-elect Shea Roberts of Sandy Springs, who defeated incumbent Deborah Silcox (R-Sandy Springs) in the Nov. 3 general election, said she will focus on economic recovery, healthcare access and public education funding. “(Since) state revenues reportedly are up, I hope (the) majority leadership will work with us to restore those budgets and prioritize our children’s education and our citizens’ health,” Roberts said.

She said she is concerned that the spread of misinformation and conspiracies will have a lasting impact on future state elections.

Rep. Angelika Kausche (D-Johns Creek) said she is worried about small business recovery in her district, unemployment, children returning safely back to school and healthcare access for 600,000 uninsured Georgians. The

most pressing issue for the assembly is addressing budget concerns.

“The hot topic should be revenue and the budget,” Kausche said. “We cannot cut ourselves out of this crisis. We need to have a plan for sustainable state revenue in the future.”

Kausche said to prevent future budget cuts, legislators could increase taxes on tobacco and vaping products. She fears political hype over election fraud allegations will sidetrack the budget formulation.

Kausche, who is a German immigrant, said changes to voting law without reason is troubling.

“It really concerns me because I come from a country that has a terrible history of disenfranchising groups of people for all the wrong reasons,” she said.

Rep. Josh McLaurin (D-Sandy Springs) is directing attention on affordable housing, increasing job opportunities and restoring funding to the budget. The prison system is of particular concern.

“The prisons were some of the hardest hit facilities in this past round of budgeting, for a lot of people it’s out of sight out of mind,” McLaurin said. “Right now, Georgia’s prisons appear to be so understaffed that every day there are basic security concerns.”

Homicides, suicides and COVID-19 infections are on the rise in state prisons.

McLaurin is working on a bill addressing suburban deer bowhunting. His proposal would allow local governments more control over the practice within city limits.

I have admired many of Brandon’s accomplishments, his tireless work ethic, and his good-natured spirit. He is a people person.

Under the Gold Dome, he is known to be an effective legislator. He is the type of person who knows how to get a bill passed and is a bit of a wonk when it comes to anything involving transportation and infrastructure improvements.

He was into transportation projects as a way to develop local economies before it was cool.

If you’d have asked me two months ago to put my money on someone who could help rebuild and lead a Georgia Republican caucus that had just seen its state elect a Democrat for president for the first time since 1992, I’d have put my money on Brandon.

But since November 3, I don’t recognize the official Senator Beach has become.

He seems to have swallowed the “election was rigged” narrative hook, line and sinker. He has railed against our Secretary of State, who to his credit ran the most seamless Georgia election of my lifetime — in a pandemic no less.

Incidentally, Brandon has been a champion for the voting rights of his constituents. He helped secure expand-

ed early voting hours and locations for his district and has always preached the importance of early voting.

The Brandon I know would recognize the accomplishments of Secretary Raffensperger and be the first to condemn the threats of violence against him and his family.

Instead, in recent weeks we have seen him parrot the talking points of the conspiracy fringes of the Republican Party, welcome a lawsuit from Texas aimed at his own state and call for official inquiries into fraud that does not exist — stoking dangerous fires that do nothing more than cost the taxpayer millions of dollars and sow doubt in the sanctity of our elections.

The easy thing to do right now is recognize the attacks and step out of the way.

The Brandon I know embraces the hard thing, because he is a bayou bulldog, and tough is what he does.

The Brandon I know told 8-year-old me not to worry about my little newspaper box in front of his sandwich shop.

He told me he’d keep an eye on it for me and ward off the vandals.

I miss that guy. We need him right now.

This local organization needs your help Because you’re reading this, I already know that you are a communityminded person who is becoming weary of seeing restaurants, organizations and businesses disappear. Georgia Ensemble Theatre is one such organization.

I am its co-founder and producing artistic director. Some of you are regular patrons of Georgia Ensemble Theatre (GET), and you may know that we have been in business for almost 30 years, serving the communities north of the perimeter from our home stage in the Roswell Cultural Arts Center.

We are the only professional theatre in the Ga. 400 Corridor. Our mission is simple: “To create a connection between audiences and artists of all ages.”

We do this through our mainstage musicals & plays, our conservatory classes, our apprentice training program and our Theatre for Young Audiences tours into schools. We are part of a national industry that was shuttered in March. Since then, we have either laid off or been unable to hire 93 actors, 10 directors, 40 designers, 44 production workers and 12 administrators — every one of them taxpaying residents of the Metro Atlanta area, including a few who live here in Roswell. It broke my heart to tell our performers we had to cancel the show planned for April, and even more to tell our staff they would have to be furloughed. Before the pandemic, our annual budget was $1.5 million; year-to-

The task force brings together the city, our Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce to bring this industry to Roswell. So far, they have been very successful in their efforts. Just since July, we’ve had seven television and movie productions in Roswell. These productions brought thousands of dollars into our community when we most need it.

We’ve also had some major development projects, while slowed by COVID, are now moving forward.

We have been shuttered for over nine months and unable to generate revenue. It is going to take time and money to bring us back full force, re-hire our furloughed staff, regain access to the space we use in a city building, and gather the necessary resources to put on a show.

We at GET are beginning a campaign in 2021 to “Bring up the Lights.” We are seeking 500 individuals who will make a year-long commitment to contribute $20 per month.

Your contribution to our continuation is tax deductible, and if we meet our goal, it will go a long way toward reopening our doors and paying the dayto-day bills that did not go away when we closed.

The arts are so vital to our community. GET is a gathering place for over the full site development of the project and has already removed the existing buildings. There are currently four building permits in the review process, including the parking garage. Armada Hoffler is waiting on the approval of these permits before they begin excavations required for building construction.

As with many construction projects around the country, the pandemic has slowed the start of the project. Armada Hoffler is holding discussions with future tenants for the buildings and has signed several tenants for both retail and office space to date. The developer expects to begin construction sometime in the first quarter of 2021.

Pickle Social Developer Mayfair Acquisitions LLC is moving through the city’s conditional use process to build a pickleball facility where the empty Kohls is located in East Roswell. The developer is asking the city for two conditional uses for outdoor recreation and event facility.

In a normal year, the arts & culture industry in the United States contributes over $870 billion to the economy every year. That’s about 4.5 percent of the GDP, more than agriculture, transportation and construction — almost all of it lost this year due to the pandemic. Keeping our arts institutions afloat until we’re able to safely open again will help save America’s economy. Besides all that, great theatre can lift you when you’re down, give you a new perspective, and help you connect with the people around you. Children who take theatre classes become more confident, more capable of teamwork, more effective at communication and more literate.

Lidl Grocery This German international supermarket chain is building a new store in Roswell at Grimes Bridge Road and Holcomb Bridge Road behind Hola Taqueria. It is a $15.5 million investment in our city that will employ 40-50 people. The supermarket will be 28,000 square feet and is slated to open in summer 2021.

I, like all of you, am looking forward to eventually returning to our normal activities. The vaccine distribution has begun across the country. I hope and pray that we will be able overcome this virus and return to our normal activities at some point in 2021. Even people fortunate enough to avoid direct losses suffered the severe effects of long-term social isolation and inability to conduct their lives as before.

Yet, through it all, Alpharetta has fared better than most. While some communities allowed the stress of COVID-19, job losses, racial injustice and political conflicts to divide them, the people of Alpharetta responded with compassion and resiliency.

The outpouring of support for Alpharetta’s front line workers and first responders has been remarkable. And as the needs of our most vulnerable populations have grown dramatically, members of our community have responded with exceptional generosity.

So what does all this mean for the year ahead? There are still too many unknown variables to be certain of much but there are some things we know.

Commercial real estate trends have changed dramatically over the last year.

Many large companies will probably not bring most employees back into office buildings until June or July. Even then, many employers may be implementing more flexible work from home policies and reduce the number of employees on site at one time. Fortunately, as trends like working from home may negatively impact Alpharetta’s economy in the short term, longer term real estate trends are very positive for our community.

The pandemic has prompted an exodus of people and companies from urban core locations into safer, more affordable suburban communities. Simultaneously, millennials are now moving to suburban areas to raise families of their own while working from home. Responding to these trends, commercial property owners are seeking new investments in safe, suburban locations close to that talent pool. These trends are great news for Alpharetta.

Based on all of this, the next few years promise to reflect those changes as some employers downsize their office spaces and others move in from other areas. Traffic may remain a little lighter for a year or two, but as Alpharetta and surrounding areas benefit from the flight of people and businesses into suburban environments, the transportation projects currently underway will be desperately needed.

Yes, the difficulties of 2020 have been immense and have taken a toll on all of us. Thankfully, we are blessed to live in a community where people faced those unprecedented challenges in ways that brought us together and make our community stronger. Thankfully, we live in Alpharetta.

Approximately 37 percent of Georgia’s 9,800 COVID-related deaths came at nursing homes. As the first wave of vaccines arrive, case rates have shot above the previous tramission peak in July with now around 5,000 new cases daily.

So far, the state has spent $78 million in coronavirus relief funds to support COVID-19 testing in nursing homes throughout Georgia.

Just last week, Gov. Brian Kemp announced rollout of a new program for longterm care facilities to partner directly with CVS and Walgreens for vaccine delivery.

Already 95 percent of the state’s long-term facilities have enrolled in the program.

Since the statewide shutdown in March, Galerie Living senior communities have adapted visitor protocols for the safety of residents. The company currently allows visits with residents outdoors. If conditions are too cold, the facilities have indoor areas that allow for ample spacing.

Kari Samuelson, chief operating officer, said they are hopeful that after the second vaccination is administered, 21 to 28 days after the first dose, they will be able to change some of the policies for vaccinated residents.

“We do anticipate that it will provide more freedom for residents that have had the vaccine,” Samuelson said. “In general, our hope is to turn to the most normal sense that we can, and we’re just waiting for the CDC and Department of Health to tell us the best and the most safe way to do that.”

Staff at Galerie Living communities have the option to receive the vaccine but are not required to. Samuelson said that as time goes on, they will determine when they will require staff to be vaccinated.

Charles Platz, president of Managed Health Solutions pharmacy services, said they were pleased to be able to administer the vaccine to the senior com-

munities and are already planning to vaccinate other local retirement homes.

Platz said the major difference between the two vaccines is the storage.

The Pfizer vaccine requires ultra-cold storage, while Moderna’s serum does not.

They plan to administer both vaccines as there is no notable difference in success, both around 95 percent effective.

Samuelson and Platz reported that there have been no extreme reactions to the vaccine in the communities. To avoid reactions, recipients are screened five minutes prior to vaccination for a fever or symptoms and are monitored 15 minutes after the injection for any reactions. Platz said the only reactions he had witnessed was a fever among some of his staff who had already been exposed to the virus.

Platz said he could feel the excitement and eagerness among the community for some glimpse at the light at the end of the tunnel.
