ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Four people were arrested Dec. 10 for allegedly trying to use fake credit cards at the Best Buy on North Point Drive.

Employees said three men and a woman were all trying to use fake cards to buy items. Jonesha Z. Arnold, 19, of Decatur, had a credit card denied when she tried to buy two computers. The card came back as a fake. When told of this, she quickly walked out of the store. Justin Donnell Tiller, 23, of Atlanta, allegedly tried to do the same thing with the same result. JC politics trumps all for top story of 2013 Bodker solidifies position as ‘face of Johns Creek’

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@northfulton.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Head and shoulders, Johns Creek’s first real political battle was the political campaign for 2013 City Council elections. There was not much it did not have.

Heretofore, council races scarcely raised an eyebrow in the city. Truth be told, most residents couldn’t name all seven councilmembers. But the one name everyone knows is that of Mayor Mike Bodker.

There isn’t a ribbon that gets cut, a school that remains unvisited or a community event that the ubiquitous mayor seems to miss.

The term most people use to describe him is “face of the city.” He was the most visible spokesperson for the drive to cityhood and the only mayor in the city’s short history.

But what most people did

CITY CHARTER CHANGES HAVE LONG-RANGE EFFECT

MAY – A little-known legislative body reared its head this year and exercised heretofore unused power to assert control over Fulton County.

The Fulton County legislative delegation, made up of Fulton’s elected members in the General Assembly, had for the first time a Republican majority, thanks to some fortuitous redistricting.

The delegation was able to bring legislation before the General Assembly that no city or the county had a say in.

Most importantly to Johns Creek and Milton, the delegation did allow the amendment of the cities’ charters to make plain that the cities would be

Councilmembers Bev Miller, Randall Johnson, Karen Richardson, Ivan Figueroa and Brad Raffensperger had been waging a campaign to rein in what they said was a mayor who was out of control. Only Councilwoman Kelly Stewart stood apart in her support of Bodker.

There had been flashes of the discord, most noticeably when the city charter was amended to curtail the mayor’s powers. Chief among those changes was a clause that said the mayor must “represent the will of the council.”

That clause was a signal to the mayor to curtail actions that they did not condone or support.

This charter amendment would also give the council the power to remove the mayor by a super majority vote of five votes.

But ultimately, they chose another method to try to unseat Bodker. It fell like a bombshell in a June council meeting when the five members announced – Stewart was not present, nor allowed to have bond referendums decided by a majority of those residents casting ballots.

The original wording in both Johns Creek’s and Milton’s charters required a majority of registered voters to approve bond referendums.

Given the disarray of the Fulton Board of Elections, it would be hard to know how accurate such a roll would be.

Never mind the fact it would be a rare vote in cities today that even brought a majority of the registered voters to the polls.

Other actions taken by the legislative delegation sought to rein in the powers of Fulton County. Not all of the delegation’s proposals were signed into law, but it does bode for a proactive delegation to contin-

Clearly, the election was a mandate for the mayor. would she support – an investigation of certain “allegations” of wrongdoing by Bodker.

Decatur attorney Robert Wilson was hired to begin the investigation of what were still undisclosed allegations. Later, the cost of the investigation would become as big an issue as the investigation itself.

Then just as election qualifying was approaching, Miller announced her resignation from council to challenge Bodker for mayor. Bodker supporters said the reason for the investigation was now clear, and that it was to sabotage his bid for a third term.

Miller said that was not the case, but critics harped that

the investigation, the resignation to oppose the mayor and the “interim report” released just days before the election all pointed to careful planning.

In the end, it backfired on the five members of council who sought to bring Bodker down.

The mayor and newcomers Lenny Zaprowski and Cori Davenport all won handily in a race where the only real issue was Bodker’s character.

But it put the spotlight on Johns Creek politics more brilliantly than ever before. It is not likely that future city elections will come and go unremarked as they had before 2013.

VETERANS BREAK GROUND ON $300 WAR MEMORIAL

NOVEMBER –The Johns Creek Veterans Association took on two projects shortly after forming in 2012. One was heartwarming and the other breathtaking.

The former was to begin an archive of local veterans on video telling of their experiences in the military. The latter project was to raise $300,000 for the Johns Creek War Memorial. They took on the project suggested by Leadership Johns Creek, a communitybuilding project of the Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce.

The Johns Creek City Council joined in by providing the land in Newtown Park. The JCVA broke ground on Veterans Day weekend with more than two-thirds of the cost already pledged.

ALCON INVESTS $250M IN JOHNS CREEK

Bringing 300 jobs to city JANUARY – It was the bottom of the ninth with two outs, and then came the grand slam homerun. Alcon, the international eye-care products manufacturer owned by Swissbased Novartis, had already merged its headquarters with Ciba Vision and relocated the new national headquarters to Texas. Then Novartis was rumored to be shutting down its Johns Creek campus of 850,000 square feet entirely and the leaving the city.

Instead, the plan was changed to stay and expand. According to a Novartis filing on the Securities and Exchange Commission, its subsidiary Alcon will invest $250 million in the Ciba Vision campus in Johns Creek to expand operations to produce a breakthrough contact lens product.

Eventually, 300 jobs, many of them top research and development positions, will be coming to the city.

Why the turnaround? When ominous noises started coming out about Novartis leaving, that’s when Georgia’s economic development engine got cranking.

Johns Creek authorities, the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce and North Fulton Progress Partners teamed up with the Governor’s Office and the Georgia Department of Economic Development to show Novartis why the campus should remain open, a knowledgeable source said.

Last summer, Gov. Nathan Deal was in Switzerland to negotiate with Novartis officials. For instance, Alcon’s concerns about adequate water for production were satisfied. Georgia officials were able to convince Novartis that it would be cheaper to produce its innovative contact lenses in Georgia than overseas.

Alcon plans a 70,000-square-foot addition to the existing plant that is scheduled to start in September. The project will take three to five years.

BELL ROAD SAYS HELLO TO $355M SUBDIVISION

Residents are worried what effect the additional homes will have on already congested roads in the area and the impact on local schools.

RESIDENTS DEMAND ACTION ON MASSAGE PARLORS

APRIL – Residents went to the Johns Creek City Council April 22 to demand action against the proliferation of illicit massage parlors in the city.

They complained of “darkly lit” establishments open until the wee hours and of Web ads describing in lewd detail the services offered.

Eight parlors were identified along a 4-mile stretch of Medlock Bridge Road, outnumbering gas stations and fast food establishments along the same stretch.

City officials explained that the problem has not gone unrecognized, but that it is a problem in most north metro cities. Cases are difficult to make and require undercover police operations.

And then the owners or operators are given a small fine in Superior Court and are back in operation the next day.

During surveillance, a Henry County assistant district attorney parked a Henry County government vehicle and entered the establishment. He resigned the next day.

JUNE – Johns Creek received a number of accolades during the year – it was named the richest city by virtue of its median family income, and it was named the best place in Georgia to find a job.

But perhaps most pleasing to residents is that Johns Creek was named the safest city in Georgia in 2013.

According to neighborhoodscout.com’s analysis of crime data, Johns Creek is 14th in its compilation of the 100 Safest Cities in America and No. 1 in Georgia. Milton, at 39th, is the only other Georgia city to make the list.

The website’s research examined all cities with 25,000 or more people and based results on the total number of

property and violent crimes per 1,000 residents.

Crimes include burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, murder, forcible rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault.

Mayor Mike Bodker called it a validation of one the major goals of Johns Creek residents when the city incorporated six years ago.

“The people wanted an improved public safety. And when you look at things like this, you see we’re being recognized for creating a very safe community,” Bodker said. “That’s important because we have a lot young people living in our community.”

EMORY ADDS $1.5M BREAST IMAGING CENTER JULY – In July, Emory Johns Creek Hospital opened a new $1.5 million Breast Imaging Center to better serve the women of the Johns Creek area.

The 4,000-square-foot center treats women for breast surgery, mammography, ultrasound, biopsy and surgeon referral.

All cancer patients who come to Emory Johns Creek for cancer care can expect a multidisciplinary, team approach in treating their cancer, said Emory’s Dr. Kimberly Lairet.

A complex group of diseases requires consultation among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists, she said.

This multidisciplinary partnership results in improved patient care.

Teen hospitalized after crash ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Seventeen-year-old James Cobb is in the hospital with serious injuries Dec. 21 after running his car into a monument sign on Mid Broadwell Road, igniting his car.

Police say the driver was the only occupant in a black Mercedes sedan and driving eastbound on Mid Broadwell from downtown Crabapple at 3 a.m.

Missing boy, father found dead

ROSWELL, Ga. – What began as a search for a missing boy ended late Friday morning, Dec. 20, after police found the body of a man and a boy in the woods near where the child was last seen.

Four-year-old Jesus Dominguez was reported missing Dec. 19. His father was suspected of kidnapping him.

Both are believed to be the bodies that were found.

Police responded to an Old Holcomb Bridge Way home at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 19 and found a woman unresponsive.

woman Lisa Holland. Police are not releasing her name; however she is still in North Fulton Hospital in critical condition.

It was discovered the woman had a 4-year-old son who was unaccounted for, Jesus

“We knew he was missing and endangered,” said Holland.

Alerts were issued for the boy, and agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Natural Resources came in to help in the search of the surrounding area.

Mid-morning Friday, the teams found two bodies – a man and a child – in the woods only a half-mile away.

Holland said it appeared to be a murder-suicide.

Final confirmation on the identity of the bodies rests with the county coroner.

The JCCA is an association of homeowners’ associations dedicated to preserving

quality of life and raising home values in Johns Creek.

JCCA membership includes 45 homeowners’ associations, consisting of more than 8,000 households.

The JCCA is actively involved in zoning, government relations, community education and transportation – all from an HOA perspective.

Elected board members will serve two-year terms and are installed at the annual meeting.

Board members are expected to commit the time neces-

sary to assist the JCCA in the achievement of its goals.

Alpharetta development vestige of prominent families Ruth’s Farm part of Spence, Wills, Peevy history

By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – At the corner of Mayfield and Bethany roads, on the border of Alpharetta and Milton, sits a 22-acre parcel of land, one of the few remaining large parcels in the area. Sitting just outside downtown Crabapple, it will soon become a neighborhood called “Ruth’s Farm,” but it was once farmland belonging to one of North Fulton’s prominent families.

Ruth’s Farm will feature 49 homes with one entrance on Bethany Road. The houses to be built inside will be all brick and start at about half a million dollars each. It is owned

by KM Homes and developed by the Providence Group.

“I got them to name it after [Ruth],” said Jack Peevy, the only son of Ruth Spence Peevy Wills, the former owner of the land. “The houses will look nice. They will be all-brick with three-car garages. Whatever is on that pasture land will reflect my mother.”

Ruth died in 2007.

The land belonged to Peevy, a retired colonel with the Army, and descendent of the Peevy and Spence families.

Both have a rich history in the North Fulton area. Peevy sold the family land while keeping two historic family houses on it preserved. Peevy’s grandparents, Bascom and Oma Spence, purchased the farm in 1918, he said. Scotch-Irish descendants, they ended a spate of progressively moving south, from Forsyth County to Bethany Bend to Mayfield Road. The house long predated their purchase, however.

“Parts of one house date back before the Civil War,” said Connie Mashburn, a local historian. “If you look under

I don’t know how far back that type of construction goes.” Both houses on the land were donated by Peevy to the Alpharetta Historical Society in 2012. They sit on a few acres along Mayfield Road. All the land around them will be developed with houses.

The Spence family has been in the area since the Civil War. “My great-grandfather went into the Civil War and was shot in the jaw,” Peevy said. “He was sent home to die. That was the practice at the time. But his jaw fell out, healed up and he went back into the war.”

The house eventually passed down to Bascom and Oma’s daughter, Ruth Spence.

Ruth Spence Peevy Wills married Hoye Peevy in the 1930s. He was a Fulton County deputy marshal.

“Like everybody her age, she got married right out of high school,” Peevy said. “She went to work at the Fulton County Courthouse.”

From there, her career took her into education. She became a secretary at a school in Sandy Springs where they encouraged her to go to college and where she eventually earned several degrees.

“She went ‘cafeteria-style,’” Peevy said. “She took a course here and a course there.”

As temperatures become colder, maintenance is required.

She and Peevy divorced in the 1950s. Ruth then married Ed Wills, the nephew of Quilliam “Quilly” Wills, the mayor of Alpharetta, who sold what is now Wills Park to the county.

Ed ran a successful cattle feed store on North Main Street.

One of Ruth’s relatives, Bill Spence, was a prominent lawyer in the area, head of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and also mayor of Alpharetta. He won a race against Quilly Wills, which surely provided interesting family dinners.

“He called Quilly a damned Republican, and he beat him,” laughed Peevy. “That was probably the last time a Democrat beat a Republican up here.”

At the time, Democrats were considered the conservative party. Now, the Spences and Willses have all died out or moved off. That is why he sold off the family land. Money from the sale of the land went to the University of North Georgia, where he says he wants to build a military museum.

“I felt that preservation was more important than money,” Peevy said. “I’m not done with doing good deeds.”

Boy Scouts to collect, recycle Christmas trees

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Boy Scout Troop 2000 wants to help the environment this holiday season with a “Recycle your Christmas tree” campaign.

Boy Scout Troop 2000 will pick up discarded Christmas trees from Johns Creek residences on Saturday, Dec. 28 and Saturday, Jan. 4.

A tax-deductible $10 donation (credit card and PayPal accepted) per tree will help support the local Boy Scout troop.

New Eagle Scouts for Milton District invested NORTH FULTON, Ga. – The Milton Boy Scout District announced its newest Eagle Scouts, Connor McNamara, Zachary Rinehart and Christian Ames, who passed their boards of review Oct. 24.

McNamara of Troop 3000, sponsored by Birmingham United Methodist Church, chose as his project to design and construct an outdoor workout area for Milton High School. He built three free pullup stations and three step-up boxes.

designed and built three large benches for the prayer trail at Birmingham United Methodist Church Ames of Troop 1459, sponsored by St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, chose to design and build an additional 20-foot handrail made of pipe for a handicap ramp.

He also painted all of the railing and ramp, bringing it up to code. In addition, he painted the front porch deck and awning and leveled the handicapped parking area for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5245 in North Haverhill, N.H.

FSA HS drops state charter school application Fulton County provides ‘better choice for now’

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Just days after receiving approval from the Fulton County Board of Education, the governing board of the Fulton Science Academy High School (FSA HS) has opted to suspend its pursuit of becoming a state

charter school beginning in the 2015-2016 school year.

Under state rules, existing charter schools must receive a waiver from the local school board to apply to become a state-commissioned charter school. FSA HS still has nearly 18 months remaining on its charter contract with Fulton Schools.

During the Fulton School Board’s Dec. 12 meeting, the waiver request from FSA HS was approved unanimously.

However, after discussion at a meeting on Dec. 18, the governing board of FSA HS

opted not to proceed with the application.

In a letter to parents outlining the decision not to pursue state charter status, Principal Namik Sercan said there were numerous factors that led to the decision.

“While there are good arguments for and against seeking a state charter, the FSA HS Governing Board elected to withhold our application for a state charter this year,” he wrote. “In weighing the pros and cons, it became clear that keeping our charter with Fulton County is the better choice

The high school currently has an enrollment of 173 students.

During the first month of its recruitment for students next year, Sercan said more than 150 students have submitted applications.

The relationship between the Fulton School System and FSA HS has been a rocky one for the past few years, although Sercan noted it is improving.

“We have worked hard to bridge our differences with the school district and are grateful for their willingness to work with us,” said Sercan. “It’s too soon to know where things will end up, but progress is being made.”

Last December, the Fulton Board of Education voted to terminate the school’s charter based on what it perceived as operational and financial deficiencies.

in terminating local charters – opted in June to send the issue back to Fulton Schools for additional information.

Since then, FSA HS has continued to operate as a Fulton charter school and is actively recruiting students for the 2014-2015 school year.

For its part, the Fulton School Board has opted not to take any further action toward a termination, and will apparently allow the charter school to continue its final two years of operation under the current charter.

Moving forward into its extended future, FSA HS has two options before it. It can still apply to become a state-commissioned charter school or work to renew its charter with the Fulton County Board of Education beginning in the 2015-2016 school year.

A spokesperson for Fulton Schools indicated FSA HS must submit its request for renewal by September in order to be considered for a renewal.

The state charter application has a separate timetable.

Top players of 2013 not among top recruits Efforts of Grauss, Biondich lauded by coaches

By MIKE BLUM news@northfulton.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – The 2012 North Fulton high school football Players of the Year were both heavily recruited by elite Division I schools and spent their freshman seasons playing extensively for a pair of teams in the SEC. The 2013 North Fulton high school football Players of the Year are not being heavily recruited by Division I schools, with one of them more likely to play lacrosse in college after he graduates in 2015.

You might not find Northview receiver Matty Biondich or Alpharetta linebacker Bryce Grauss near the top of any football recruiting lists, but the two players were hard to miss when playing for their respective teams this past season.

Biondich and Grauss are the North Fulton Players of the Year, with Grauss earning defensive honors and Biondich the area’s top offensive player.

Grauss, a senior, was the

Defensive Player of the Year in Region 6-AAAAAA and spearheaded the defensive effort that led the Raiders to an undefeated region record and a victory in the first round of the state playoffs.

Although he was slowed by an injury late in the season, Grauss continued to play defense from sideline to sideline, making tackles all over the field, causing fumbles, intercepting passes and generally causing havoc for opposing offenses. “If what you’re looking for is production and an impact on the game, I don’t think there’s been a better football player in North Fulton the last five years,� Alpharetta coach Jason Dukes said of Grauss.

In the Raiders’ playoff victory over South Gwinnett, Grauss did a little bit of everything despite having to come out of the game more than once due to a knee problem.

He had multiple quarterback sacks, forced a fumble, blocked a punt, made a long interception return and simply would not allow Alpharetta to lose, with the Raiders coming away with the first playoff victory in school history. “He made everything go,�

At least Grauss (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) looks like a football player.

Biondich is all of 5-foot-7, 155 pounds and is likely to play lacrosse in college at West Point, having already committed to the U.S. Military Academy. Army, which rarely throws out of its triple option offense, would not have much use for Biondich’s football skills, which are impressive despite his slight stature.

The 2012 North Fulton Offensive Player of the Year, Alpharetta’s Joshua Dobbs, ended this past season as the starting quarterback at Tennessee.

Northview coach Chad Davenport needed only one word to describe the kind of season Biondich had for the Titans.

“Unbelievable,” Davenport said. “He does not drop anything.”

Biondich, a junior, compiled a highlight reel’s worth of amazing catches throughout the season, finishing with 75 receptions for 1,225 yards and 13 touchdowns, with his yardage total second in the state and first in AAAAA.

Even though opposing defenses knew the ball was going to Biondich in key situations, he managed to make one big catch after another, frequently down the field against double coverage.

“He runs very good pass routes, has great speed and tremendous concentration,” Davenport said. “And he’s a smart receiver. He knows how to break off the route if he has to and make an adjustment.”

Biondich had at least one touchdown reception in each of the Titans’ last nine games, and had at least 100 yards receiving seven times in 2013.

Biondich also had a punt return for a touchdown and handled the CHAD DAVENPORT punting duties Northview Coach for Northview, kicking a field goal in his only attempt.

With both Biondich and quarterback D.J. Pearson back next season, the Titans’ opponents in 6-AAAAAA will have a new pass threat duo to deal with after the graduation of all the region’s collection of standout receivers from the 2013 season.

Coach of the Year: Shar-

ing honors as North Fulton Coach of the Year are Mount Pisgah’s Mike Forrester and Blessed Trinity’s Tim McFarlin.

Forrester helped guide the Patriots to the semifinals in the Class A private school division, where they lost 17-16 to Aquinas, which won the state title the next week with a 27-7 victory.

Coming off a 6-5 season and a first round playoff loss in 2012 to the top-ranked team in the 16-team bracket, Mount Pisgah finished with a 12-1 record in Forrester’s first season as head coach.

McFarlin led the Titans to a third straight playoff berth in Class AAA, with BT capturing a region title against some very tough competition.

The Titans, who faced playoff teams in all four of their non-region games, ended with a 9-4 record, reaching the quarterfinals before losing to state finalist Washington County.

BT has won at least one playoff game in each of McFarlin’s three seasons as head coach.

“The toys will go to North Fulton Community Charities.

The toy drive was also a chance to thank staff and supporters for the work they do for the people of North Fulton, she said.

Hausmann said the elections in 2014 will be a “game changer” for the Fulton County Commission. Redistricting will cut her district in half. She will have the east side of Ga. 400, and a new District 2 will be created on the west side.

River will be a new District 3 with Sandy Springs joining with Buckhead to be a greatly altered district as well.

Redistricting has eliminated the at-large commission seat now held by Commissioner Robb Pitts.

“I will be looking forward to working with another North Fulton commissioner,” Hausmann said. “I think it has been long overdue for North Fulton to have the full representation it deserves.”

Fashion show raises money for Marcus Autism Center

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Local women took to the runway to show maternity wear can be fashionable as well as practical, all to raise money for children with autism.

Izzy Maternity at North Point Village has an annual holiday fashion show – this is their seventh – that not only previews the new holiday look, but also raises money for charity. This year, the recipient was the Marcus Center for Autism, a part of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Hannah Vahaba, the daughter of the founder of the company, said what makes their fashion show special is they use their customers as models.

“We want to show the holiday look, but we want to put it on a real woman’s body. So we try to get women of all shapes and sizes and let women see what it really is going to look like,” Vahaba said. “We’ve found women really like to shop this way. They say, ‘Oh I love that on her, I want that.’”

Nineteen model/customers participated in the event, wearing everything from casual party attire to ball gowns.

“We do everything from business casual to all the dressy stuff,” Vahaba said.

Alpharetta mulls convention center in Avalon Retail 90% leased

By HATCHER HURD and JONATHAN COPSEY hatcher@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – A new wrinkle in the $600 million Avalon mixed-use project going up at Ga. 400 and Old Milton Parkway could include a fourstar hotel and a 47,000-square-foot convention center.

Alpharetta and North American Properties are in discussions to partner in building the convention center pending a study on costs.

Phase one is already on schedule for an October 2014 grand opening that includes nearly 400,000 square feet of retail, 250 multi-family units, 101 single-family units and 83,000 square feet of office space.

Mark Toro, managing partner at North American Properties and the developer of Avalon, announced the project is 90 percent leased with many leading national retailers and restaurateurs having signed on.

North American Properties is the same real estate company that turned around Midtown’s Atlantic Station. In 2011, it paid $22.8 million for what was then called Prospect Park, an ambitious suburban luxury shopping center and mixed-use development that went south when the recession hit. North American called the new project Avalon.

Alpharetta had issued in March an “indication of interest,” asking for ideas and proposals for a convention center.

Avalon was chosen by the city as the better of the two responders.

The idea for a hotel and convention center has been pushed by Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle, and Avalon was always on the city’s short list of sites.

The City Council took the first steps in partnering with Avalon at its meeting last week.

The city has anted up $60,000 for a predevelopment design and cost analysis, with North American picking up the rest of the cost. It is estimated the convention center would cost in the neighborhood of $25 million.

The city and the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau will split the cost of the city’s end.

Belle Isle said if the convention center could be brought in for that amount, the city could pay for the revenue bonds to build it through an increase in the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau tax on hotel beds.

“That is the only real potential source to pay for those bonds that this Council would consider is through an increase in the hotel-motel tax,” Belle Isle said.

It is conservatively estimated that moving the tax from 6 percent to 8 percent would raise more than $24 million.

The proposal at Avalon calls for 300 hotel rooms in a full-service hotel along with up to 47,000 square feet of convention space, but the agreement is not binding.

Coldwell Banker rolls out new tool for consumer websites JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage is a residential real estate company

“Within 10 miles of here [downtown Alpharetta], there are 63 hotels,” said Jim Stormont, with Stormont Hospitality Group.

“Almost every single one of them is limited service and the only full-service hotel is the Marriott, which doesn’t have a lot of meeting space. There is a huge need for meeting space in this market, and we see a big opportunity.”

Stormont has partnered with Avalon on the hotel, and has a history of building highend hotels, most recently the Marriott at Hartsfield-Jackson

Airport.

He said the hotel and conference center would be placed in the Avalon project along the Ga. 400 side and feature prominently in the designs.

The benefits, he said, would be many.

There could be as much as $42 million in total economic benefits to the region, with 210 jobs created directly. Hundreds more would be created indirectly and supported by the center.

By the third year of operations, Stormont said there would be $1.5 million in taxes generated each year by the convention center.

November sales for North Fulton and Forsyth County.

Comparing sales year-over-year for the month of November unit sales dropped a modest 4 percent in North Fulton, but went down a whopping 22 percent in Forsyth County.

The seasonal shift to lower unit sales was expected but it is interesting that the numbers varied so much between the two areas.

The good news though is that sales prices are still showing a solid increase over the same period last year.

The average sales price in Forsyth County is up 12 percent over last November to $277,116 and up 13 percent in North Fulton to $411,218.

Additionally, the average days-onmarket is down 35 percent in Forsyth County and 38 percent in North Fulton.

So, on average homes are selling for more than last year and selling more quickly.

make gains next year, but those gains will not be quite as robust with the additional inventory we’ll see from new home building and with more sellers having crossed over the negative equity threshold into positive territory.

Tax changes and expiring tax breaks to be aware of before end of 2013 Throughout the year, I often discuss taxes with my clients – including the tax changes that affect them as small business owners and the expiring tax breaks that they face on their individual returns. Here are some important changes to keep in mind.

Tax changes for corporations and sole proprietors in 2013: Health care tax credit. Small businesses that employ fewer than 25 full-time equivalent employees may qualify for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit. To do so, the employees’ average annual wages cannot be more than $50,000, and the business must pay at least half the premiums for employees’ single health insurance coverage. The maximum credit is equal to 35 percent of the premiums paid by the business. The credit can be claimed in tax years 2010 through 2013 and for any two years after that.

Hiring qualified veterans. Businesses that hire veterans who have served our country can receive certain tax credits. In 2013, the maximum credit for hiring qualified veterans at a for-profit business is $9,600 per worker, while tax-exempt organizations can claim a $6,240 credit per worker.

Deduction for equipment purchases. The Section 179 expense deduction for equipment purchases for 2013 is $500,000 of the first $2 million of certain business property placed in service during the year. For qualified property that exceeds the threshold amount, the bonus depreciation is 50 percent.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell city leaders welcomed the expansion of 64 new suites at the Tapestry House assisted living facility.

A groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the occasion took place Friday, Dec. 13 at 9212 Nesbit Ferry Road in Alpharetta.

Milton L. Cruz, owner of Insignia Senior Living, was in attendance along with Dean Peacock, principal of Peacock Construction.

Invited guests included Maria Rose of the Johns Creek Chamber of Chamber, Roswell city leaders, Julie Vickers, executive director of the Tapestry

House, Zee Jennings, executive director of Tapestry House, and Tracie Kolody, executive director of Carlton Senior Living in Sandy Springs.

All three of these senior living facilities are owned by Milton L. Cruz.

The health care real estate and investment group last year opened the first assisted living and memory care facility in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The latest project, a 64-suite addition to Tapestry House Senior Living and Memory Care will offer studio and one-bedroom apartments with assisted living amenities as well as medication manage-

ment.

The facility will also accommodate a 30-day rehab stepdown program from hospital discharge.

Construction for the expansion is expected to be completed by the end of September 2014.

Regular Eye Exams Are Important For Seniors (NAPS)—Many seniors will be glad to learn that there are steps they can take to protect against vision problems— starting with an eye exam. A regular exam is key for seniors because some eye conditions and diseases do not show warning signs.

While it is commonly known that eye troubles increase rapidly with age—particularly after age 65—a lesserknown fact is that vision loss is also associated with a higher incidence of falls, injuries, depression and social isolation.

A Regular Examination As part of an overall healthmaintenance strategy, the American Academy of Ophthalmology urges seniors to have a comprehensive eye exam, especially if they have not had one in the past two years, whether or not there are symptoms.

The Academy also encourages seniors, their loved ones and caregivers to be aware of signs that indicate vision problems that require an eye exam.

These problems can include: • Bumping into or knocking over objects • Stepping hesitantly • Squinting or tilting the head when trying to focus • Missing objects when reaching

• Discontinuing everyday activities such as reading and writing.

Simple, painless eye exams are crucial in detecting an eye disease or condition in its early stages, to help preserve your sight. During the exam, an ophthalmologist—a medical doctor who specializes in eye care—will provide a diagnosis and treatment of all eye diseases and conditions.

Making Eye Care Available Despite medical evidence that healthy vision plays a critical role in overall health and happiness, many older adults in the United States do not seek regular eye care or face difficulty accessing and paying for health care services.

To ensure that all seniors throughout the country have access to eye care services, nearly 7,000 volunteer ophthalmologists are available to provide eye care at no outof-pocket cost to qualifying seniors 65 and older through EyeCare America, a public service program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, which matches patients to volunteer ophthalmologists.

This is done through Chopin Society concerts throughout the year bringing internationally known artists to perform in North Fulton.

These have included acclaimed pianists as Ilya Yaku-

shev, Alexander Kobrin, Ingrid Fliter, Christopher O’Riley, Sa Chen, Joyce Yang and of course Johns Creek’s own Piotr Folkert.

The Chopin Society also promotes music education among North Fulton students through their performing at fundraising events, offering free concert tickets and conducting after-concert essay

contests.

Lato-Folkert said it is important to pass on to the next generation the love of classical music, both as art and for the enrichment they receive from it.

“We believe that music increases young people’s intellectual abilities and stirs their imagination,” Lato-Folkert said.

Irish pub book arrives after blizzards’ delay Midwest storms held up copies

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@northfulton.com MILTON, Ga. – The new book on Irish pubs by local author/ photographer Robert Meyers has been much anticipated, but only now has become available locally because of ice storms in the Midwest.

“Irish Pubs in America: History, Lore and Recipes” came about as an idea by Meyers and friend Ron Wallace to explore the phenomenon of Irish pubs and their effect on American culture.

That led to their sojourn from Boston to Honolulu visiting more than 100 pubs, which were culled down to 52 in the book.

“These pubs were a stopping off place for communities,” Meyers said. “They stopped off on their way home from work, after athletic events, weddings and funerals – all of the events of their lives.

And often, they were the only cheerful place they had.

“But they were a jumping off place, too,” he said. “Often,

it was an Irish pub like Sorley’s in New York that put up newly arrived immigrants and gave them a job and a room until they could launch themselves into America.”

Meyers explores the richness of life these pubs bring into a community that is unique to the Irish pub alone. And then there are the recipes that make an Irish pub distinct as well.

With each richly made photograph comes the personal story of each pub, shaped and shaping the communities in which they sit.

But really, an Irish pub in Honolulu? Wallace says there is not one, but two, and they are on opposite corners near the city’s Chinatown.

“One is all Red Sox, and the other is for the Yankees.

But they come together for the largest St. Patrick’s celebration – not a parade – called the Sea of Green, and raise thousands of dollars for the University of Hawaii,” Wallace said.

NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The Georgia High School Association has released its preliminary region assignments for the 2014-16 seasons, with some changes to each of the regions including teams from North Fulton.

Region 6-AAAAAA is scheduled to add two schools, with Northview moving up from AAAAA as expected.

Habersham Central, which has played in 7-AAAAAA the past two seasons, is being switched to Region 6, making it a 10-school region, equally divided between North Fulton schools and non-North Fulton schools.

Habersham Central is the lone school from northeast Georgia in the AAAAAA classification and has one of the smallest attendance numbers among AAAAAA schools. The Raiders went 1-19 in football the past two seasons in Region 7, considered the state’s strongest.

If Habersham winds up in Region 6 after the appeals pro-

Pinecrest replaces Whitefield Academy, which moves to Region 5.

Pisgah’s Forester Coach of the Year First-year coach best in Class A football

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@northfulton.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Mount Pisgah’s Mike Forester has capped a 12-1 season in his first year as head coach by being selected Class A Coach of the Year by both the Atlanta Falcons and the North FultonForsyth Touchdown Club.

Forester came to Mount Pisgah in 2012 to be the defensive coordinator for the Patriots. When head coach Doug Dixon left the next season to coach in Savannah, Forester was named to replace him. He did not disappoint.

He led his Patriots to a perfect 10-0 regular season and the school’s first football region championship. Forester then notched two wins in the playoffs before his boys lost a heartbreaker in the closing minutes 17-16 to Aquinas, the eventual state champion.

Forester had coached for 19 years at Briarwood Christian School in Birmingham, Ala., a 5A school in the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

There, Forester helped Briarwood to three state championships (1998, 1999 and 2003), as well as two state runner-up finishes (2007 and 2010).

“It is quite an honor to receive this award. I am thankful for what this reward means.

Anytime you receive an award like this, it is symbolic,” Forester said receiving the Falcons tribute. “It really reflects the great coaching staff, administration, players and parents that we have at Mount Pisgah.”

Forester took his Patriots almost to the state title game in his first year. He says he owes a lot to the years he spent at Briarwood and the success of the program the head coach there had.

“There were a lot of situations when I asked myself what he would do,” Forester said. “I was part of a great program, and I’ve tried to bring the things that made that program so good to Mount Pisgah.”

How does he plan to improve next year? Forester said he likes the rising underclassmen’s attitude. “I think since that night was over, that they will feel we have unfinished business. The juniors, sophomores and freshmen on this team have gotten a taste of it.

Hopefully that will provide us with the motivation to take it a step further,” he said.

Forester has made his mark on the Pisgah program and on the young men he coaches.

“Coach Forester has come in this year and totally changed the dynamics of our program. He has been a posi-

tive influence on me on and off the field,” said Pisgah senior Patrick Messinger.

“He is a man of great faith, and a tremendous mentor to our team and the Pisgah community. I could not have asked for a better senior year. We are all blessed to have Coach Forester in our lives.”

Forester may have been destined to be a coach. He certainly has football in his DNA. Not only was he a three-year letterman at the University of Mississippi, his father was a member of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.

Bill Forester was a linebacker for Green Bay from 1953 to 1963 and played on the 1961 and 1962 championship teams. A captain of Vince Lombardi’s defense, the elder Forester also held the Packers’ consecutive games played record until it was broken by Brett Farve. Forester’s uncle, Herschel Forester Jr., played at Southern Methodist University and was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. He was one of Paul Brown’s first “messenger” guards and a member of the Browns’ 1954 championship team.

“Coach Forester has done a phenomenal job especially in his first year as head coach.

What he has meant to these players, their families, the coaches and this school can’t be measured in wins and losses,” said Pisgah Director of Athletics Blake Davenport.

“I look forward to seeing him guide this program to new heights on and off the field in the years to come.”

O Tannenbaum, where art thou now?

I know I am not breaking new ground when I bemoan the commercialization of Christmas. Many have trod that path ahead of me.

But when Christmas lights go up in stores the day after Halloween, well it is a sign of the times.

What I am bemoaning as I turn the final corner before Christmas is the fate of that iconic emblem of Christmas – the tree. Their cost can easily run to three figures.

Once home, it is likely to be “themed” with all-white ornaments, or all Duck Dynasty, or whatever. It will have no personality.

What about the Christmas tree of yore? Yes, that sylvan emblem embossed with tinsel, lights and brilliantly speckled ornaments that once stood sentinel by the fireplace. It awaited only the arrival of that Jolly Old Elf to complete his mission of joy, while those visions of sugar plums danced in our dreams.

The decorating of the tree was a festive occasion, yet laden with traditions. It was a family affair in which even I, the youngest, was allowed to participate. Later on, I would attend the selection of the tree, an equally serious event although quite exciting as it was always done at night after my father got home from work.

Rituals performed at night heighten the senses and take on an aura of portent, even if your brother keeps poking you in the side. And it involves a transaction, also a sign that this is more than just frivolity.

But once the tree is erected in the house, cradled in its stand and barren of all adornment save the emerald green needles endowed by God, it becomes a canvas. Boxes stored a twelvemonth are unearthed and brought into the living

room to begin the transformation.

Many of the glass balls – these were the treasured decorations brought into the family like a dowry – I was not allowed to handle. I could be trusted to hang some of the more newly bought globes. But those imbued with tradition, with memories, with that auld lang syne, those, I could not touch. I had not earned the right to place those.

Some were made of cardboard. They were left over from World War II when you couldn’t use materials that were needed for the war effort. One decoration had my name on it, and that was for me alone to place upon a bough.

And what lights we had on our tree. We didn’t trifle with those penny-ante twinkly blips that pass for tree lights these days. We had real tree lights.

I am talking war-surplus searchlight lights. You had to place aluminum reflectors around the business end of them before screwing them in to protect the tree from the heat they emitted.

My cousins had these really fancy lights that were tubes filled with liquid that bubbled when they heated up. They made the tree look like it was moving. They were really cool, but not really, well, traditional.

When all the decorations were up, the last was the tinsel. That was my favorite.

You never know what others are going through “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind.”

Someone posted that on my Facebook wall, and I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind since – not that I necessarily want to.

When I first saw it, I immediately started processing how true it was – how many times the idea hit close to home.

I thought of the kids in our community who took their own lives this year and the pain endured by the friends and family of those kids. I thought of the principal and the teachers who taught at the schools where those kids went and the herculean efforts they made to prevent more tragedies. And I imagined the indescribable pain and frustration when despite their efforts, it continued. I thought how hard it must have been and how brave and heroic it was when those administrators showed up at school – or back home every day – and somehow managed to slip on masks of positive attitudes, smiles and engagement with those around them.

I thought of the people I know who lost jobs, who lost careers in mid-stream, out of

the blue and who didn’t know what to do. I thought about what it felt like to pretend that everything was OK, that their pride really wasn’t hurt when they stayed unemployed or when they took jobs that maybe their kids would have qualified for.

I thought about the frustration and emptiness they must have felt when they couldn’t provide for their family. I imagined one of them in front of me at a traffic light a bit distracted and not noticing that the light was green – and my hand moving toward the horn.

When I saw that Facebook post, I thought about my kids growing up in this Internet age where all personal information is public and where all secrets are found, and where kids are surrounded by pressure and stress from corners of their lives to which we parents are

oblivious. I imagined how hard it is to be a kid today – or a parent, and I wondered if the short tempers, the ugly comments, the seemingly self-centered behavior that seems to permeate our lives today might somehow be related.

Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind.

I thought about the single moms struggling to support their children, hold down jobs, pay bills and still try to have a life. I thought of the ministers carrying the burdens of their congregations silently on their shoulders and working more hours than they would ever admit to and never complaining. I thought of those holding two or three jobs to try to make ends meet and how that might look on their faces when they were in line at the grocery, in the bleachers at the ball game, sitting in a restaurant or watching others complaining about the difficulty of finding a court or chatting on their phones at the red light in a hurry to get to lunch at a local watering hole.

Be kind. Walk in their shoes. At least try.

for a parent to teach a child is the concept of empathy. Being the center of attention is how we are born and what is hardwired into us, and it does not necessarily go away as one grows older. It has to be unlearned. One of the best ways is to be exposed to someone who has unlearned it. Children’s and adults’ behavior is learned; it is modeled. That is, we learn by example.

My daughter Amelia has been babysitting recently for a single mom. The woman holds down a modest-paying job and is raising two young foster children. She recently took on a third foster child because, I suspect, no one would take the child because she is older. The mom never stops. Between her job and trying to raise those kids, I don’t know how she finds time to sleep. But Amelia is not babysitting for this woman to give her a break. She is babysitting for her because the woman is organizing – on her own – a mom’s night out for all the other foster moms so they can have a break. She is coordinating babysitters. She is finding a place and a way to entertain and “sit” all these foster kids, all in her “spare”

time and with her “extra money.”

This mom is fighting a battle that few would be aware of or consider, and she does so willingly and with love. She deserves your patience, your admiration and, yep, your compassion and empathy. I think that most of you, if you knew what she is doing would gladly give her a helping hand or, at a minimum, not be mean or impatient with her in daily life.

But here is the rub: “she” is everyone. She doesn’t wear a label that says she deserves or needs your understanding or support.

You just have to have faith that “she” needs you – and you need her. And, no, my daughter is not charging her.

In the case with our family, I have probably learned more by modeling my children – and my wife – than anything else during my 59 years on this planet.

Be kind, and even when you can’t be kind, be kind anyway.

At the end of the day, making someone else’s world a little better in some way is making everyone’s world a little better – including your own.

YMCA seeks weight management participants ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The YMCA of Metro Atlanta is looking for women ages 21 to 60 to participate in a new weight management research program.

The goal is safe, effective and maintained weight loss through use of moderate exercise and changes in eating behaviors. There is no cost to qualified individuals.

This study is related to the Coach Approach, which was developed by the Y in 2003 as a highly supportive coach-

ing process that helps build the habit of regular physical activity.

The program will be conducted at the Ed Isakson/ Alpharetta Family YMCA at 3655 Preston Ridge Road, Alpharetta.

Program participants must be female, 21 to 60 years old and have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 40. For example, a female 5 feet 4 inches tall would be required to weigh between 174 and 232 pounds.

Participants also must not be exercising regularly (less than 20 minutes per week).

They must have a goal to lose weight, but are not presently be enrolled in another weight-loss program.

This exasperated my mother who would patiently place single strands of the silvery ribbons until they were all gone.

But I wanted the effect to look as if it were snow, and snow just falls from above, right?

Finally the tree was done, and now all that was left was to wait for the presents to accumulate beneath it – as if all that waiting was something tolerable. It was quite a chore too, checking each morning and evening to see if any new arrivals had my name.

I don’t check the packages anymore. I don’t get many gifts anymore. Not that I have been a naughty boy all year, but I am of an age where I enjoy the giving rather than the getting.

And it is not much of a tree anymore. Years ago, we gave over to the “Made in China” tree. So rather than the anticipation of finding the right Christmas tree, it was a lonely plod down to the basement to bring up the same one for assembly.

This year, it was not even the big tree, just a little brother, it too made of plastic.

I just put a plastic bag over it in situ last year and carried it down. This year, I brought it up and pulled the bag off like a magician, and voila, instant Christmas tree! It’s just not the same.

But no worries. Early on Christmas morning, My Lady Wife and I will get up, gather up breakfast casseroles and drive 10 minutes to the kids’ house. There, two little boys will have been up for an hour but banished from the downstairs until our arrival.

Then at last unleashed, we will sit back and watch the awe, the excitement and the wonder as they roam for plunder under their Christmas tree.

And that will be enough.
