ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Atlanta man pulled over for traveling down Ga. 400 at over 150 miles per hour was later arrested for DUI. Around 3 a.m. on Nov. 12, an Alpharetta police officer was passed by a McLaren 720S traveling at a high rate of speed. The McLaren was originally clocked at 109 mph. After the officer activated his lights and siren, the car continued to accelerate. The driver failed to maintain lane and was weaving around traffic according to the officer’s report. The car’s speed varied from 115 to 155 mph. The officer followed the

Family returns home to discover break-in JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — More than $1,500 of American and Korean cash, along with a $1,750 earring was reported stolen Nov. 6 when a family returned home and found that someone had broken into their house. The family came home at 9 p.m. and saw that the lights upstairs were turned on. When they started investigating, they saw that the whole house had been rummaged through. According to police, the suspect likely entered through the kitchen dining area, where a glass door had been broken open. The last person had left the home close to 5 p.m. One diamond stud earring was missing along with $500 in American currency and $1,000 worth of Korean currency. Police found several footprints in the backyard that they said could have been from the suspect.

Corneal Transplant: Penetrating Keratoplasty (Part 1 of 2)
By Priyal Gadani, O.D., F.A.A.O. The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped outermost tissue of the eye, which is sometimes referred to as the window to the eye. The cornea focuses light through the lens onto the retina. A diseased or injured cornea can cause significant decreased vision, pain, or discomfort. Oftentimes, these issues may be remedied by medication eye drops, contact lenses, or other more conservative procedures, Priyal Gadani, but if the cornea still does not respond, O.D., F.A.A.O. a corneal transplant may be required. A corneal transplant is a surgical procedure in which damaged or diseased cornea is replaced by donated corneal tissue (the graft). It may restore vision, reduce pain, and improve the appearance of the damaged or diseased tissue. A number of conditions may be treated with a corneal transplant, including keratoconus (a disease process that causes the cornea to thin and bulge), Fuchs’ dystrophy (an inherited disease which causes corneal swelling and clouding), corneal scarring due to injury or infections such as herpes simplex or herpes zoster (shingles), corneal ulcers, or complications from previous eye surgeries. Penetrating Keratoplasty: When the entire cornea is replaced, it is known as a penetrating keratoplasty and when only part of the cornea is replaced, it is known as lamellar keratoplasty. Keratoplasty is another term for surgery of the cornea. Penetrating keratoplasty (PK) involves a complete transplant of the cornea, and may be a better treatment option for patients with severe corneal disease. PK is also called a “full thickness” corneal transplant, meaning the entire cornea is removed and replaced with a donor cornea. Finding a donor cornea: Corneal tissue used in corneal transplants come from recently deceased donors who have no history of known diseases or other factors that would affect the chance of success of the donated tissue or health of the recipient. Donors can be of any age. The procedure and post-op care: Penetrating keratoplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning that patients can go home the same day as their surgery. Before beginning the PK procedure, a local or general anesthesia is administered. The corneal surgeon uses a trephine, or circular cutting device, to cut the donor corneal tissue the exact size and shape needed. A second trephine is used to remove a circular portion of the patient’s cornea, after which the donor tissue is positioned and sewn into place. Antibiotic drops are applied and the eye is covered with a protective shield at the end of the procedure. The patient will return the next day for a post-operative appointment, and will use several medication eye drops to help prevent infection and inflammation. The vision will be blurry during the recovery process, and it may take several months for the eye to heal and vision to improve.

Ethics panel dismisses charge against Milton organization Ruling clears path for local blogger in political feud By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. – The case against a Milton organization under investigation for campaign ethics violations has been dismissed. Milton resident Francia Lindon filed the ethics complaint against the Milton Coalition in July claiming it constituted a group of more than one person and that it had violated state law by expending funds to influence an election either for or against identifiable candidates. Under such conditions, the complaint stated, the Milton Coalition was bound to register with the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission. Lindon’s filing named Milton resident Tim Becker as the head of the Coalition. But earlier this month, the agency dismissed the charge stating it found no evidence to support the claim that the Milton Coalition included more than one member. Becker has described himself as a local blogger with influence to mobilize large numbers of residents to rally behind local issues. As a one-person entity, however, The Milton Coalition does not fall under the purview of the Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission. Becker declined to comment on the ethics ruling. The Milton Coalition has been engaged in a feud with other factions over the city’s proposed Conservation Subdivision Ordinance, which would allow smaller residential lots in certain

Tow truck driver gets stuck under car FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A tow truck driver became trapped under a car Nov. 11 in the Lakeland Plaza parking lot. The car’s owner called the tow truck company to help her after she was hav-

Conservation subdivisions allow developers to congregate housing into one or several areas of a site and commit the other acreage to green space. Housing density on the site can vary, but the overall development would still conform to agricultural zoning limits. Lindon has been involved in landuse issues since the city’s founding more than 10 years ago. She now is a board member of Preserve Rural Milton, a nonprofit that has taken the opposite side of the subdivision ordinance issue from Becker’s stance. Becker filed an ethics complaint against Preserve Rural Milton in September. That case has yet to be decided. The Milton Coalition’s recent advocacy against the ordinance has included blogs identifying candidates’ positions on the issue. Some City Council members have expressed frustration over just who the organization represents and how many members are involved. The ruling by the state commission found that the first iteration of the Milton Coalition was formed in November 2015 by a loose grouping of individuals opposed to a land-use issue. That group remained intact until June of 2016 when the original group of members disbanded. During the time the group operated, the Milton Coalition expended no funds for the use of its WordPress hosting service or any other form of communication in their campaign, the commission found. It further found that during the time the organization had more than one member, there is no evidence it ever advocated the election or defeat of any identifiable candidate or engaged in any form of lobbying.

Milton High seniors turn out in droves for local service projects By PAULINA OSENENKO paulina@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton High School recently took the leap to be the first Fulton County public school to participate in local service projects. Milton’s senior class decided they wanted to spend a day giving back to the community as a group instead of attending a senior celebration at Six Flags or Main Event. On Nov. 14, Milton seniors gathered on the front lawn of Milton High and awaited the 13 buses that would take them to their chosen projects. The students were given 18 different service options, ranging from sorting clothes for foster care, to helping in elementary schools, to landscape work at various locations and spending time in assisted living facilities. Each project drew from 10-40 students, and each student completed three hours of service. In all, 460 of the 520 seniors signed up for various projects. “We have had many more seniors sign up for the service day than we had signed up for the senior celebration at Six Flags last year,” said Jeannie Yancey, Milton High School assistant

Cambridge FFA captures second national title Ag communications team deemed best in nation By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Cambridge’s FFA chapter is still in its infancy having been created just three years ago. But already it has been named one of the top 10 chapters in the country, and on Oct. 27, it captured another national championship. Led by Cambridge agriculture, agri-science and veterinary teacher Sarah Nerswick, the Ag Communications team captured a second straight national title in Indianapolis, as well as multiple individual awards. Composed of Cailey Doyle, Aalia Garrett, Brittany Breedlove and Hayley DeSander, the team competed in multiple areas of communications to capture the title of nation’s best. The students wrote an opinion piece and press release, took quizzes on the Associated Press Stylebook and created a website and video. They also crafted a media plan to promote FFA and expand it to the 13 counties in Georgia that do not currently have a chapter. Doyle’s website was awarded best in the nation, while Garrett took top honors for video editing. Those scores enabled the team to take their “Gold Emblem” award, but not before much anticipation. “They announce winners starting from the very bottom and go through all the states alphabetically,”

Doyle said. “We were all sitting there holding hands, and when they announced second place, we all looked at each other and Haley and I started crying,” she laughed. With the nationals win, all four students earned $1,000 scholarships that will go toward their veterinary degrees. In addition their Ag Communications award, the Cambridge chapter was in the top 10 of over 8,500 chapters for the Model of Excellence.

Nerswick attributes the chapter’s achievements to the students and the support of the Cambridge community. “I think it’s great students and high expectations,” Nerswick said. “That, and everyone is so supportive. We wouldn’t be able to do these things without their support. Teachers have allowed [students] to make up work and have helped them with their projects. The administration is understanding that we are developing life skills.” Breedlove said having a true passion for the organization is also vital. “We feel like with that love you give yourself the ability to succeed,” she said. It is also a focus to grow the chapter and to shake the notion that FFA is restricted to farming. “We want people to see that FFA is more than farmers,” DeSander said. “We want to show them we can win a national championship in something that is more than plowing a field.” And Cambridge students are certainly taking notice. The chapter has continued to grow, adding a second teacher at the school while the program continues to solidify itself as one of the best in the nation. “I’m just so thankful to be a part of the community and was given the opportunity to start this program,” Nerswick said. “These students are going into colleges for agriculture. They might have thought beforehand that they wanted to be a veterinarian, but now they have accolades that will help them to be able to get into vet school and great experience. I’m just so very thankful.”

North Fulton Charities feeds hundreds for Thanksgiving By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – For more than 500 families, Thanksgiving came a bit early this year. After months of collecting donations, North Fulton Community Charities handed out turkeys, three bags of food each and gift cards to grocery stores to families in North Fulton on Nov. 19. Director of Programs Eden Purdy said the annual event is community-wide because 180 volunteers came the day before to sort through the food donations and bag them. All food and gift cards were donated, including those from food drives at local schools. For 25 years, Purdy said North Fulton has held holiday events for Thanksgiving and Christmas. About 10 years ago, Purdy started volunteering and has seen the program grow, becoming better each time. “The busiest year was during the recession and we had 1,500 families total,” Purdy said. “This helps the folks living in our community who are struggling paycheck to paycheck, working minimum wage. This helps relieve that financial stress and to allow them to celebrate their traditions with their families and not incur any additional financial burden.” Each year the families are vetted by North Fulton and qualify after they prove their need, which could be

I have family members who come, too, because we need it sometimes. It means a lot because North Fulton helps people a lot, especially in this season. I’m thankful they help people.” Serving people gets Purdy up in the morning and is her passion, she said. “These are the people who struggle but work hard,” Purdy said. “They are the work force that really make our community thrive. Their struggles are our struggles. All of us know people either in our families or we have some kind of connection. We can relate to their struggles.” The holiday program is special for Purdy. “If we can help people celebrate with their families in their homes and have a holiday meal, and help get the children gifts and toys for Christmas, and not feel a financial stress and burden,” Purdy said. “For most of us the holidays are such a happy time. Well some people will think I’m crazy, but I’m a not afraid to admit: I’m not a big fan of Thanksgiving, never have been. Plus, half the items cooked (mostly vegetables) I don’t even like! One year, we decided to visit family in Florida. All I wanted to do was sit at the beach. But I spent most of the vacation either at the grocery story, cooking or cleaning…not at the beach. Instead of perspiring in the hot sun, I was sweating in a hot kitchen! The next year I had family come to my house (small group of 20). Five of them were an hour and half late for dinner and left in the middle of dinner to hit the Black Friday sales, only to return with Tupperware to put leftovers in after I had already cleaned up and put everything away. Then they requested I serve them dessert! Another year, I thought it would be great to go to the mountains and stay at a resort that has one of those giant Thanksgiving buffets. Well that was a bust. The food was awful, way too many different smells in one room and way too many people. No idea what I’ll do this year for the holiday. My newly married (Nov 3rd) daughter wants me to come to her house in Virginia and cook her turkey for her…not sure that’s in the plan. No offense to her. She has a really cute house, but her oven just doesn’t really work like mine. I do love leftover turkey sandwiches, though. Those are the best!

Wallace said it began innocently enough when a friend asked his help in creating a business for a singing group of young boys the friend had organized when they were preteens and now were nearing their 20s. “Well, one thing led to another I wound up in Nashville at the ASCAP (the member-owned professional organization of songwriters, composers and music publishers) offices.” he said. “I started taking a little bit of interest in one of the better-known songwriters there and he wound up at my house. One thing led to another.” “One thing led to another” is a term Wallace uses a lot. It means the bird dog in him has picked up the scent. The songwriter knows a lot of performers ready “to go large” as they say in Show Biz. One of the first acts that Wallace took an interest in was a duo called Lance &Lea. He filed them on the backburner, but his mind kept to returning to them. Meanwhile, he was investigating the music business more thoroughly. He describes it as “the most complicated business in the world with rules that change daily.” In other words, one thing led to another, and he was back at ASCAP in Nashville. Now he is looking at music publishing and what is called a 360 Degree contract. That means when the talent signs on they sign over the music rights, marketing rights, live performances – everything. He has signed Lance and Lea to a “360” and they have some 40 concert dates already lined up for 2018, but Wallace says they will triple that by
January. In return, the talent gets bankrolled, marketed and the opportunities they would not have the means of taking assuming they even knew where to look. One thing led to another, and now Wallace is spending time in Nashville every month. He has a (music) publishing and recording company with a library of 300 songs so far. As he explored how to make it all support itself, Wallace found out it is mostly chaos. There are the songwriters, the artists, the recording studios. There are labels for distribution and production. Other people do the accounting, publicity and legal work. No one does it all, he said. Well, Wallace knows how to do things under one roof. So one thing led to another, he brings in some investors and meets Paul Worley, one of the names with Clout in Nashville (think Dixie Chicks, Big and Rich, Lady Antebellum). By now Wallace has signed another artist, Cherie Oakley, who wrote the Reba McIntyre hit “Turn On the Radio.” Wallace bought out her contract and has musician-producer Dann Huff working Cherie’s new record with her own version of “Turn On the Radio.” “We think we have two or three hits on the six songs we mastered of her,” Wallace said. His company, Number One Group, is now a record company and a publishing company with legal, accounting and marketing under one roof and its own catalogue. So that is where Wallace stands today with several irons in the fire. Where music impresario Ron Wallace ends up, who can say. But hey, one thing does lead to another.

Georgia economy moderating after good 2016 Growth rates slowing but still remain robust By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA – Rajeev Dhawan, director of the Georgia State University Economic Forecasting Center, sees the economy cooling somewhat after a really good 2016, but with the exception of manufacturing jobs, job growth has been good this year and Dhawan trends well into 2018. Nearly 25 percent of all job growth in Georgia and metro Atlanta falls in what the forecast calls “premium” jobs – high-paying – but after a high in 2016 will be moderating through 2019. Georgia is on track to create 87,800 jobs in 2017. But that will slip to 70,400 in 2018 and to 65,000 new jobs in 2019. Not surprisingly the lion’s share of job growth, around 75 percent, will occur in the greater Atlanta region. Meanwhile, nationally, Dhawan compares Congress’ tax cuts with an opening gambit in chess. The gambit is the sacrifice of a piece (tax cuts) for a greater advantage later on. Congress (at least the Republican majority) is banking on giving the middle class tax relief in the short run – thus cuts do expire unless renewed. Meanwhile big business and Wall Street can see $1.4 trillion in tax savings 10 years down the road. Will the tax cuts create the capital to fuel the kind of GDP growth the United States has not seen since the Kennedy-Johnson era? The GOP majority says yes. But the trickle-down growth policies of Reaganomics in the 1980s never materialized. Dhawan said he thinks in the end there will be tax cuts for the middle class in the first quarter of 2018 – it is an election year after all. But Congress – read the Senate – will have to back away from some or most of the corporate giveaways as its razor-thin majority cannot withstand more than two defections.

And given Alabama’s soap opera Senate election, that once golden Red State seat in the Senate up for election could be lost reducing its majority to one. With elections coming up, Senate Republicans may well decide it is better to live and fight another day for Wall Street. “It will end up being a tax cut for the middle class,” Dhawan said. Internationally, the picture is murkier. Speaking on that issue was guest speaker Stuart McIntosh, executive director of Group of 30, an international financial think tank comprised of senior banking, financial and academic figures. He noted that history tells us when there is a global economy, there is economic stability in the world. That was evidenced by the Roman Empire as a time of relative economic and social stability. And when it fell, there were hundreds of years of economic chaos known as the Dark Ages. With first Britain and then America leading what
McIntosh called the globalization of a world economy there has been relatively stable and continuous economic growth. What has given rise to concern is President Donald Trump’s “America First” trade policy which suggests America is retreating from leadership of the global economy which clouds the future a great deal. As Trump disassociates the U.S. from trade and environmental agreements to renegotiate “better deals” for America, it creates a leadership vacuum for the rest of the world. “If America steps out of the role of leading the world economy, there is a very short list of who could step in to assume that role,” McIntosh said. He did not say China, but the list gets short indeed if it is taken away. McIntosh pointed out that upon the U.S. stepping out of the multi-lateral Asian trade treaties, it was China that has taken the lead role to negotiate pan Asian deals without the U.S.

Thanksgiving is here! If you’re like me, you’re looking forward to getting together with family and friends for good conversation and good fellowship – and good food. Yep. If you’re STEVE HUDSON like me, that means Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net lots of good food. Every year I face the challenge of what to do after the Thanksgiving meal. The call of the sofa is strong, and the prospect of a post-dinner nap becomes overwhelmingly seductive. You know how that goes, though. One minute you’re saying to yourself, “I think I’ll just stretch out here for ten minutes,” and then the next thing you know it’s three hours later and time to eat again. This year, I’ve decided to try to break the cycle. My after-meal plan is to force myself to stay vertical and flee the siren song of the sofa. This year, I’m going to go on a postmeal hike instead. Where should I hike? I’ve been thinking about a neat Corps of Engineers trail just east of Buford Dam, the Laurel Ridge Loop Trail. The Laurel Ridge Loop Trail offers almost four miles of good hiking and also connects with a spur leading into the eastern part of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area’s Bowmans Island Unit. There are many access points for this trail; I’ll probably start at the CRNRA Bowmans Island trailhead in the first parking area on the west side of the river. To make this hike, first walk up the road through the second parking area and cross a field to the footbridge which crosses over the Buford Dam spillway. Across the bridge, follow the trail to the right, eventually crossing a long fishing bridge and then climbing to an intersection with the Laurel Ridge Loop. To hike the loop in a counterclockwise direction, turn right. The trail follows the river for about a quarter mile, then swings left and passes two spurs which mark undeveloped trails leading into CRNRA’s Bowmans Island Unit. Beyond the spurs, you’ll traverse several bridges and boardwalks before crossing a road. Beyond that road crossing another bridge awaits, followed by a power line clearing and (after re-entering the woods) the rusted remains of an old, old car. After another road crossing, the trail turns right at a playground and follows a paved walkway around a parking

The main trail goes left, crossing a long bridge and then traversing another parking area before re-entering the woods and (at a large field) following more paved walkway around another parking area. You’ll eventually re-enter woods, albeit briefly, and then climb some concrete steps before skirting yet another parking area on a paved walkway. The trail continues beyond the lot, crossing a bridge and then traversing timber steps and a pair of boardwalks. Beyond them the trail soon widens somewhat, then trends right and passes through a stretch lined with large stones. Some massive boulders will be visible to the right just before you cross another road. Beyond the road is an extensive wetlands area, which you cross mostly on boardwalks. At times it’s prime birding territory – and, when it’s warm, prime mosquito habitat too. The path soon comes to a pond and cabin where it turns left. More wetlands (and possibly more mosquitoes) follow. You’ll soon cross a clearing and another road. Beyond that road, follow a sidewalk around the back of a restroom building and turn left at an

intersection near the first picnic table. The trail continues to another road crossing; beyond it, stone steps climb back into the woods. You’ll cross a tiny boardwalk and then pass behind a cluster of buildings before arriving at an intersection where you’ll go right to continue the loop. Soon, you’ll come to an observation deck located on the left side of the trail. Beyond it, descend a set of extremely steep stone steps, followed by some equally steep wood steps, followed by a short boardwalk – and then a road crossing. From there, it’s just a short distance to the end of the Laurel Ridge Loop Trail. Maybe I’ll see you on the trail this Thanksgiving. Be sure to say hello! I’ll be the one in the Indiana Jones hat – or, if resolve fails me, the one napping in the hammock between those two trees! Now is a perfect time of year to explore this and other hiking trails near the Chattahoochee River. For atypical moles, what’s the typical treatment? Brought to you by: Dr. Brent Taylor Premier Dermatology and MOHS Surgery of Atlanta A changing mole is a common complaint that leads a patient to a dermatologist. And it’s also one of the most important issues that a patient can have because a changing mole could be a melanoma. Dr. taylor Melanoma is the most deadly common form of skin cancer and can spread even when it is the size of a pencil eraser or smaller. That is why dermatologists are so focused on catching melanoma early. If a skin cancer has not yet spread, then a sim-
ple surgery and a few stitches are often sufficient to provide a complete cure. If a cancer has spread, then lymph node biopsies, radiation, chemotherapy and other measures are sometimes necessary to try to save someone’s life. A dermatologist can help determine if a growth requires a biopsy. In general, a biopsy is a procedure intended to sample (not eliminate) a growth. A biopsied specimen is submitted to a pathologist who will determine if the growth is clearly benign, malignant, or somewhere in between. For atypical moles, pathologists typically grade how abnormal the mole is by grading them – mild, moderate or severe. This sounds simple, but there exists tremendous variation in how

Moles: Continued from Page 22 dermatologists manage moles that are assigned these grades. Some dermatologists watch almost all abnormal moles. Some dermatologists recommend cutting out (excising) almost all abnormal moles. Who is right, and why is there variation? Historically, some dermatologists believed that all atypical moles were precancerous. Such moles were (and often still are) called “dysplastic” nevi, although some dermatologists favor labeling them Clark’s nevi to avoid confusion over malignant potential. The term “dysplastic” connotes a tendency towards becoming a cancer. However, research now supports that many so-called dysplastic nevi will never amount to anything and are not “pre-cancers.” There is a pattern of growth that some healthy moles can take that can make them look a bit disorderly, but for many moles “dysplastic” is a misnomer. As a result, a debate exists in the dermatology community over whether dysplastic nevi are precancers and whether they should be excised. A multitude of studies have followed patients whose dsyplastic nevi were excised versus observed. From these studies, we know that people who have dozens of dysplastic nevi still have a very high chance of developing melanoma even if they have every single mole on their bodies removed. We also know that removing mildly atypical nevi is generally not necessary and does not seem to decrease one’s chance of developing melanoma. What about moderate and severely atypical nevi? Mounting evidence now suggests that nevi with a grade of “moderate” probably also do not have to be removed and can be safely observed. Some studies have even suggested similar observation for severely atypical nevi, but the norm for them continues to be excision. There are exceptions to the above rules: For some moderately atypical nevi, a pathologist may issue a recommendation that might read, “re-excision is recommended to ensure complete removal of this lesion.” This is pathologists’ way of signaling that the pathologist is still uncomfortable enough with
the microscopic appearance that the mole should be removed. Alternatively, the mole might be graded as moderate atypia, but the dermatologist may have noted that clinically the mole looked severely atypical. Clinical impressions matter, and a mole that is moderately abnormal under the microscope but severely abnormal to the naked eye would also likely warrant complete removal. Patient factors such as immunosuppression, a history of melanoma, etc., all also might play a factor. However, in a world where profits sometimes drives people’s actions, patients are wise to be informed and be their own advocates. Unfortunately, multiple mildly or moderately atypical nevi are too often removed. Based on current evidence, many of these “dysplastic” nevi in all likelihood could have been safely left in place. Patient sometimes receive a few or, sadly, many scars unnecessarily. No dermatologist wants to leave in place a mole that becomes a melanoma, but neither should we subject patients to procedures and scars unnecessarily. By agreeing on regular skin exams, partnering with our patients to be vigilant for changing growths, and practicing evidence-based medicine, dermatologists can often safely leave mildly and moderately atypical nevi in place. Patient-centered, individualized medicine taking into account the patient’s entire history and risk factors can help guide the decision of how best to protect patients from the dueling perils of missing a melanoma and performing unnecessary procedures. If you have a changing growth or even a recently biopsied growth, seek an opinion from a dermatologist who you trust. Do not hesitate to ask why a procedure needs to be performed. If the answer does not seem reasonable or easily explained, then never hesitate to seek a second opinion. One additional tip: if you are worried about a possible melanoma, then ask your dermatology practice about adding an emergency “spot check”. Milton drops heavyweight battle to Broncos to end season By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com SNELLVILLE, Ga. — One of the most successful seasons in Milton’s 68-year program ended Friday night in a tough battle against Region 7 champions Brookwood. Milton fell 28-23. Though the Broncos led the majority of the game, the Eagles continued to fight to the last minute. That was the ultimate takeaway for first-year head coach Adam Clack. “That embodied what this team has been all year,” he said. “They never quit and I was so proud of that.” It was a frustrating loss though, as the two teams matched up evenly in almost every statistical category. Both teams had just over 390 yards of total offense. Less than a minute separated their time of possession. Both teams incurred five penalties. Milton was 6-13 on third down, while the Broncos went 6-12. Both teams scored
on three trips to the red zone. There was just one turnover, an interception, that went in Milton’s favor. “It turned out to be a classic matchup we felt it was going to be,” Clack said. “We just came up a few minutes short.” Trailing 21-10 in the fourth quarter, Milton capped off a 17-play, 85-yard drive with a rushing touchdown from Solomon Vanhorse to cut the lead to a single score. But a 50-yard touchdown pass from Brookwood’s Dante Black to Angelo DeSpigna extended the Broncos lead to 28-16 with two minutes remaining. The Eagles then drove 79 yards in just 50 seconds — scoring on a Dash Hairston touchdown reception —to give Milton hopes of a comeback. But as Clack said, the Eagles fell just a few minutes short. On the onside kick attempt, a Milton player touched the ball before it had traveled the necessary 10 yards,
allowing Brookwood to take possession and run out the clock. “Our kids played their tails off and theirs did too,” Clack said. “It was just one of those nights.” Jordan Yates was 1425 passing for 229 yards and two touchdowns. He was also the leading rusher with 90 yards, followed by Vanhorse with 77. Dash Hairston led receivers with six receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown, followed by Syaire Waters with three for 67 yards and a touchdown. The loss brought an end to the careers of Milton’s seniors, which Clack called an incredible class. “What I love about football and my profession is that you put 16 and 17-year-olds in a situation where they have to respond,” he said. “They accepted this transition, me and my

coaching staff, in a way that was we were going to go forward no matter what.” That leadership brought the team to a 9-3 record and the second round of the playoffs for just the third time in program history in Class 7A, what Clack called arguably some of the toughest football in the nation. “If it weren’t for those seniors it would have been a completely different season,” he said. With Friday night serving as the first day of the 2018 season, Clack’s confidence is high for the Eagles’ program. “Now we begin,” he said. “That’s our rallying cry right now. I really believe we’re building something special here at Milton, and this season set the bar extremely high. I’m excited about raising that bar next year.”

Alpharetta makes history with win over Douglas County By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — This year’s Alpharetta squad has accomplished what no other team in program history has done — earn a quarterfinals berth in the state playoffs. The Raiders advanced beyond the second round for the first time Friday night with an exciting 24-21 win over Douglas County at home. “I’ve been here for nine years,” head coach Jacob Nichols said. “I’ve seen everything from the 3-7 seasons to the first playoffs to the first region championship. This is definitely at the top of my list. It’s something that this school and these boys will remember for a long, long time.” The Raiders got off to a swift start by scoring on their opening three drives of the game. But big plays from the Tigers and their defense against Alpharetta’s rushing game kept the contest close. Both teams incurred costly penalties that negated long gains or scores. In an especially chippy second half, two Douglas County players and an Alpharetta player were ejected following a scrum on the Raiders’ sideline. Even with the penalties and missed opportunities, Alpharetta’s defense shut down a trio of talented Tigers’ rushers. Jack Stanton, Nick Markus, Deplores Schletty and Reid Schultz were staples in Douglas County’s backfield throughout the night, forcing errant passes with pressure. Markus and Stanton each had sacks. “We knew they have a stable of running backs and our guys played awesome,” Nichols said. “If we can continue to do that and continue to have our bases covered we’re going to be in good shape.” Alpharetta’s offense was forced to rely on its passing game when Nolan Edmonds and Kevin Watkins were held to minimal yardage by the Tigers’ sizeable and quick defensive line. “We knew all week it was going to be tough-sledding through the tackles,” Nichols said. “Sometimes you have to have multiple game plans and find the one that works.” That game plan was to let quarterback Matthew Downing and his receivers lead the charge. Downing connected with Spencer Gaddis for a touchdown on the Raiders’ opening drive of the game. He hit Marcus Hill for a 50-yard score early in

Hill would also bring in the final score of the game on a nifty double move in the end zone late in the third quarter. Receivers Luke Estes, Michael Marbaugh and Robbie Ruppel added receptions throughout the game. Though Downing had an impressive night, he also had two interceptions. Nichols blamed himself for the first, stating he put Downing in a tough position. The second, which was returned 30 yards for a touchdown to give Douglas County its only lead of the game in the third quarter, was tipped. But on Alpharetta’s subsequent drive, Downing looked poised and connected with multiple receivers, driving the Raiders 53 yards on seven plays to reclaim the lead. “That’s the kind of kid [Downing] is,” Nichols said. “Nothing scares him and nothing gets him upset. He had to get rid of the ball quick all night because [Douglas County] has a tremendous defensive line and he did a great job of it.” Leading 24-21 with four minutes remaining, Downing and the Raiders’

The Raiders attempted to kill the final ticks with Downing scrambling and throwing a high pass out of the end zone, but half a second remained when the ball hit the turf. Douglas County lined up for a final Hail Mary attempt, but their quarterback was flushed out and pressured by Alpharetta defenders. His pass barely left his hands as he was being taken down, a fitting end to a stout defensive
performance from the Raiders. Their defense may be without two key players next week. All-American safety Jaycee Horn went down with an injury in the third quarter and never returned. Defensive lineman Mustafa Nassar also left the game with an apparent leg injury. On Horn’s injury, Nichols said the team is “staying positive.” “It’s something that has nagged him for a while so we’re hoping it’s something he can rehab from and get back,” he said. “But we’re going to plug in some guys and do whatever it takes.” And they’ll do whatever it takes in the formerly unchartered territory of the quarterfinals. Alpharetta will host Coffee this week in the third round.
