housands of women will not have to fight breast cancer alone, thanks to support from those involved with Tennis Against Breast Cancer, including local survivors who participate to spread hope.

Since 2003, the event has included more than 10,000 women who have raised over $1.5 million.

Last year, over 1,200 people played for three days to raise more than $230,000 to help fund research and provide mammograms to underinsured women in the surrounding community.

Last year, funds from this event help provide more than 1,500 mammograms, during which 17 breast cancers were detected.

Emily Bowen works with the Northside Hospital Foundation, which puts on Tennis Against Breast Cancer. The event started as a fundraiser for the Northside Hospital Breast Care Program.

Initially, it was one event a year and has grown to include three events annually throughout October.

The day of the event, participants begin with breakfast and tennis drills with professionals at the local athletic clubs. It culminates at a luncheon featuring a fashion show, raffles and gifts. During the luncheon, one of Northside’s physicians discusses the latest research and treatment for breast cancer.

“We have ladies who’ve been playing since the beginning and the reason they come back is not just about raising the money, but it’s about coming together as women in our community recognizing the importance of this cause,” Bowen said. “There’s a great atmosphere and personal touch in recognizing the survivors and the battle they faced or continue to be facing. It’s not just about coming, playing tennis and having a good time. But it’s also a special time to spend that day together and recognize all that they’ve gone through.”

Three women from Milton participate in the tournament, all for personal reasons.

Before Brenda Longoria was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer in April of 2016 at age 55, she attended a Tennis Against Breast Cancer event after learning her neighbor, Lori Ovington, sponsored a group for years.

“I remember listening to the speakers and thinking how brave they were, but never thinking, I too would be a survivor one day,” Longoria said.

That April, Longoria went in for her annual mammogram with no family history of breast cancer. She was diagnosed with cancer which led to a lumpectomy and three lymph nodes being removed later that month. Another test the month after revealed she had a fast growing cancer, so she began chemotherapy from June to August.

Her daughter was getting married Oct. 1, 2016, so her doctors allowed her to hold off on radiation until after, which she completed

nearly every day that month.

Many people do not realize that the cost of the wig may be covered by insurance. Once I had that problem solved, I shaved my head and dealt with the treatments as they came.”

She is still clear on the mammograms she gets every six months, but she takes hormone blocking medication which she’ll have to continue for three years.

Now, she hopes to help more women by participating in the annual tennis tournament. Here are some of her thoughts: What message would you like to provide women in the community?

Please have your annual mammogram. I was very cavalier about my mammograms. I thought that with no family history my chance of getting breast cancer was small. I did not always go every 12 months.

Because they caught mine early, the risks to my health were minimized and the amount of chemotherapy and radiation were minimized. I will never go past 12 months again.

Why did you want to be involved?

Again, early detection is critical, and it is so important that this service be offered to all women.

What do you all hope to accomplish?

Awareness to the community that breast cancer is rarely a family trait — one in eight women will be afflicted, so best to be cautious and make sure you have your mammograms. Also, I would love to help others as they go through the journey.

Another survivor’s story

When Barbara Ghent was diagnosed with breast cancer not once, but three times, she became an advocate to help other women.

The first time she was diagnosed was in 2001 at the age of 34 after she conducted a self-exam. The cancer was detected at an early stage, so her treatment included a lumpectomy and six weeks

Five years later, at age 39, another tumor was found, but due to it being a reoccurrence, it was treated more aggressively with a single mastectomy.

Then another five years passed, and at age 45 Ghent was once again diagnosed with breast cancer during a self-exam.

“At first I thought it must be scar tissue,” she said. “But to be safe I called and asked the doctor to do a scan before I was due to have one. Unfortunately, it was not scar tissue, but luckily we caught it early again. Because it was a third tumor in the same area, we treated it very aggressively with chest wall resection, chemotherapy and six more weeks of radiation. It's been almost seven years since my last battle, so I think we got it this time. That sucker better not come back.”

Breast cancer isn't a death sentence anymore, and that is a direct result of the money raised in tournaments like Tennis Against Breast Cancer for research and treatments, she said.

Here are some of Ghent’s observations about the battle.

What did you do to help you meet the challenges of your treatments?

I just always tried to stay positive. Deep down I knew I was going to be OK. I knew it was going to be a difficult journey but I was confident I could get through it, and my family was with me every step of the way.

In a weird way, I think having cancer changed me for the better. I'm glad I have been able to help others that have dealt with some of these same challenges.

What message would you like to provide women in the community?

Pay attention to your body and don't procrastinate. I'm living proof that if something like this does happen to you and you catch it early, you can get through it and you will be OK. Why did you want to be involved?

I know how much the money raised for research helps. I wouldn't be here today without it. This is my way of saying thank you and doing a small thing to give back.

Sharing the survival experience

When Uyen Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997 at age 46, it came as a total surprise because she had just had an annual checkup with her OB/GYN who had not seen or felt anything suspicious.

She reached out to Ghent when the mammogram came back suspicious.

“It was tremendously helpful to talk to someone who had gone through the diagnosis multiple times, each with a different circumstance, to understand what I could expect in the weeks ahead -- additional mammograms, MRIs and biopsies,” Kim said. “Throughout my diagnosis and treatment, my husband Tom was always at my side providing support by researching doctors, talking to friends who had gone through similar treatments and helping to maintain some sort of normalcy in our household during an emotional time.”

She received the name of Ghent’s breast care specialist, and her treatment began which led to a double mastectomy to minimize the potential risk of recurrence.

thing I have ever had to do,” Kim said. “I knew I didn't want to take the chance of having to have that conversation ever again.”

Here are Kim’s thoughts on the experience: What did you do to help you meet the challenges of your treatments?

Following my surgeries, I was physically unable to do a lot of the day-to-day things that we normally take for granted, which was frustrating and hard to accept. Tom and the kids really had to help me a lot. Because I was a fairly active person prior to the diagnosis, I was determined to regain as much of my physical abilities as possible. I was diligent in doing the exercises and stretches that my physical therapists showed me, and slowly my physical strength and abilities started to come back. There are still a few things that are difficult or slightly painful to do and that might always be the case. But I feel very lucky because I have friends who are still dealing with the physical effects post-treatment.

What message would you like to provide women in the community?

Many of us are busy, and it's easy to put off our regular medical checkups. Often times, we're too busy taking care of everyone else and forget to take care of ourselves. My diagnosis was a reminder that if I didn't take care of myself, I wouldn't be around to take care of my loved ones.

How did you hear about Tennis Against Breast Cancer?

This will actually be my first Tennis Against Breast Cancer event.

From the technicians and assistants to the nurses and doctors, the staff at the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute were incredible during my pre-op and post-op. Even though I only had brief interactions with them, they made me feel so much better during what was probably the worst time of my life. When (Ghent) told me about Tennis Against Breast Cancer, I wanted to be a part of the event to show my support for the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute and all of the wonderful people who work there.

hile summer is vacation season, many of us still must work in an office on a daily basis. Whether you are the CEO of your own company or interning for the aforementioned CEO, these smart staples will keep your look businesslike during the hot summer Do you know someone who is currently receiving chemo treatments? Infusion centers can be cold and scary places. Give them a handmade fleece cape to keep warm during treatments. Giving a cape is like sharing a hug.

In 2006, Georgia resident Faye Tarsches was hired by a big box store in the Atlanta area as a regional pricing coordinator.

While becoming familiar with her job, she came in contact with Kathy, a woman 10 years her senior who lived in Florida. Kathy had a similar position with the company and helped Tarsches learn the ropes of the business. Over the phone, the two women became extremely close friends. Never meeting face to face, the women began to share their struggles, triumphs, secrets and heartaches.

In 2009, Tarsches lost her job at the company, but kept in contact with Kathy over the phone.

“We talked four to six times a day. She kept my head up through some of the toughest things I had to go through, “ Tarsches related.

By this time, Kathy was suffering with health problems. She confided to Tarsches when she was in pain, while hiding it from her family. This relationship went on for years, still never meeting face to face.

Kathy was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and began chemotherapy treatments. She admitted to her friend in Georgia that the infusion centers offered blankets to keep her legs warm, but her shoulders were cold. She also mentioned she didn’t like placing her handbag on the floor during the treatments.

Tarsches had an epiphany. She could use her sewing skills and create something for Kathy to keep her shoulders warm. A simple fleece cape. She added a pocket on the outside to hold a book or iPad. An inner pocket held keys, insurance card and ID. “I made it out of ivory colored fleece with a mint green pattern,” Tarsches recalled. “Kathy schlepped it around everywhere with her!”

The cape was such a useful gift, Kathy urged Tarsches to make and sell the capes. Tarsches was reluctant at first, choosing to find a more traditional way to earn a living. However, a seed had been planted in her mind. Years went by, and the friendship continued to grow. So did the Kathy’s cancer. After one brief hint of remission, the cancer came back with a vengeance. Kathy always said, “No, I don’t want you to see me this way.” As hard as it was, Tarsches obeyed her dying friend’s wishes. Kathy died in 2017. Tarsches lost her closest friend, whom she never saw in person or even hugged.

Tarsches wondered how to deal with this loss? Her confidant, her closest friend who literally took her secrets to the grave with her, was Faye Tarsches, founder of Kathy's Cape gone. How could she honor her memory?

During her grief, another friend, Stephanie, died of cancer in 2018. She also used one of the cozy fleece capes that Tarsches had created. With Stephanie and Kathy’s encouraging words in her mind, she created Kathy’s Cape. With permission from Kathy’s daughter, Tarsches created the logo for the business from Kathy’s own signature. She sells the capes by word of mouth, a Facebook page, and business networking groups.

Amy, Kathy’s daughter, said, “Mom, is definitely smiling down on you.”

With this encouragement, Tarsches is creating a website, and plans to sell on Amazon.com/handmade. Currently, she sews all of the capes herself. One size fits all. She makes them for men and women, with plans to create a children’s version of Kathy’s cape.

This journey has brought many people with their own stories of triumph over and loss from cancer.

Tarsches said, “Someone told me, giving a meal is good, but you can only eat so much. The cape says to the receiver that you took the time to think of something different.” ■

A mom’s cancer journey teaches lifelong friends unforgettable lessons

fter 27 years at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where she is currently a physician outreach liaison, many of Smith’s musings naturally have a medical theme. Sometimes the topic is nursing in early 1900s Atlanta, which she discussed as a historical fiction panelist at September’s AJC Decatur Book Festival.

Other times, Smith’s healthcare background plays a more personal role. In “Couch Time with Carolyn,” a memoir that earned her the first of three Georgia Author of the Year nominations in 2015, Smith detailed the optimism Carolyn Sewell, her “second mother,” embraced despite a dire diagnosis. In honor of National Breast CAROLYN KATIE HART SEWELL SMITH Cancer Awareness Month, Smith reflected on Carolyn’s battle against the disease and the impact it had on a circle of lifelong friends.

Your book is a tale of five gal pals – you, Dorothy, Susie, Susan and Carole – who met at Shallowford Elementary School, graduated from Dunwoody High School in 1982, and remained close. While the Dunwoody Girls, or DGs, shape your memoir, it was evenings later spent with Dorothy’s mom, Carolyn, that give the story heart. How did these “Couch Time” sessions start?

Smith: When I began working at CHOA, only a few miles from Carolyn’s Dunwoody home, I’d frequently stop by her house after work and take her out to dinner before making the hour-long commute home to Lawrenceville. I also had a standing reservation to spend the night at Carolyn’s when I worked late at the hospital and was too tired to make the drive home. When Carolyn’s health issues arose, I would stay and care for her. Carolyn's daughter, Dorothy, was a single mother living in Stone Mountain at the time. Between the two of us, we took turns coordinating her home care.

It was during one of your evenings with Carolyn that she first discussed her breast cancer diagnosis. What treatments did she receive?

Smith: Her initial treatment plan was chemo and radiation, but her liver and kidneys couldn’t handle chemo. So, radiation was done and it erased the tumor on her spine. She then did hormone therapy thereafter.

death to her own health challenges. You mention three lessons Carolyn taught you – listen to your heart, follow your dreams, and open your heart to love. What else did you learn from watching Carolyn embrace life despite a terrifying illness?

Smith: I learned from Carolyn the true value of family and friends because they are the ones to lift you up with their love and prayers, the importance of keeping a keen sense of humor, and while she couldn't control the terminal prognosis of cancer, she accepted it with peace and grace. Although Carolyn had cancer, cancer didn't stop Carolyn from being her authentic self. Since we are all imperfect, she taught me about forgiveness and acceptance and the boundless depths and breadths of love.

Tragically, Carolyn’s cancer returned just before the DGs 30th high school reunion in 2012. Dorothy asked you – her nurse friend – to help with her mother. What services did you provide that anyone, with or without medical training, can offer during a similar trying time?

Smith: Allow yourself time to process and understand your thoughts and feelings about grief and death. Simply be respectful, be calm, be present, and it's all right to be still in the silent moments. When a loved one is transitioning, love, compassion and empathy is all you need.

What did Carolyn teach all the DGs that women anywhere, of any age, might embrace?

Smith: Raise your glass and toast, "Girls, each day brings a new adventure. Embrace it. Life will test you. Pass it. Keep your heads held high! Walk through life with style and grace. Wear your red lipstick with your finger and toenails polished red, too! Cheers to you!” – Carolyn Sewell ■

ike us, our aging pets are susceptible to many different cancers. Cancer cells are constantly being produced every moment we live and are removed by the immune system. As this capability declines with age, abnormal cells survive, reproduce and cause the diseases we broadly refer to as cancer.

New drugs (e.g. small molecule inhibitors), better targeting of drugs to tumor cells only, different schedules (low dose daily chemo = metronomic therapy) and cancer vaccines make this even more possible. Radiation therapy has also advanced. We now have more exact targeting of cancer masses, deeper penetrating beams, and less damage to normal tissues as a result. Aggressive surgery is the mainstay in many cancers with chemotherapy and radiation utilized as follow up.

Diagnosis of cancer requires looking at cells, in some cases by tissue aspiration, or more often by biopsy. Our abilities to identify cancer cells also has advanced. Entire new modalities, such as flow cytometry and PARR, are now available to animal patients. Protein targets (antigens) have been identified for many different cancers and allow us to differentiate different types of cells by immunohistochemistry staining.

Mast cell tumors (MCT), often raised red hairless skin masses or firmer lumps under the skin, are the most common skin tumor of dogs. They run the gambit from non-aggressive to rapidly fatal tumors. Boxers and Pugs are predisposed, but fortunately in these breeds they are often the less aggressive types.

Therapy is aggressive surgery, sometimes followed by radiation or chemotherapy. Cats infrequently get MCTs of skin, and when they do the disease is benign (non-cancerous). Malignant mast cell disease occurs in cats internally in liver, spleen, and intestines.

Lymphatic cancer, also called lymphoma or lymphosarcoma, is a common cancer in both dogs and cats. In both species, this is treated with chemotherapy and many forms are very responsive.

disease, although any dog can be affected. Dogs generally present with sudden onset of enlarged lymph nodes in the jaw, neck, armpits, groin and behind the knee. In our feline children, lymphoma generally involves internal organs, and can be more subtle and difficult to diagnose. Response to chemotherapy depends both on the site and on the specific type of lymphatic cell involved (e.g. T-cell or B-cell, small or large cell).

Mammary gland tumors (MGT), recognized as lumps in tissues associated with a nipple, are more common in dogs than cats. In dogs about half of MGTs are benign and about half are cancer. The extent of surgery and need for follow up radiation or chemotherapy is dependent on the exact tumor type. The feline situation is much more grave. MGTs in cats are almost always extremely aggressive and require radical surgery with follow up therapies.

Looking in your pet’s mouth and getting yearly thorough veterinary physicals, will help you to identify oral cavity cancer.

Cats most commonly get squamous cell carcinoma, which looks ulcerated, erosive and inflamed. Kitties may stop eating due to pain from these tumors. A common site, under the tongue, may require sedation to identify. In dogs, oral tumors can be highly aggressive malignancies (malignant melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, cancer of bone), benign or non-aggressive cancers.

All oral cavity masses should be biopsied. Treatment is usually surgery or radiation therapy along with pain management.

If your older dog develops straining to urinate, blood in urine, or increased frequency of small quantities urine passed, bladder cancer is one of the diseases to be evaluated. Shelties, Westies, and Scotties are the most common breeds, but all dogs are susceptible. Bladder tumors in cats are extremely rare. Very mild chemotherapy is often used to slow disease progression and numerous new surgical options may help to allow removal of urine from the body.

Hemangiosarcoma (HSA), a devastating cancer, is also rare in cats and not uncommon in dogs. This tumor of blood vessels usually occurs on the heart, spleen, or both of large breed dogs.

These sites, and the fact that HSA rarely causes abnormalities on screening bloodwork, make early diagnosis rare. The first symptoms you see may be acute collapse, panting, pale gums and weakness. Surgery and chemotherapy may improve comfort and survival times, but the overall prognosis is poor.

Bone cancer, osteosarcoma (OSA) most commonly, again is uncommon in cats and most common in large breed dogs.

Dogs usually limp, demonstrate pain on touching the area, and eventually a swelling may be seen with this very aggressive cancer.

Radiographs (X-rays) will help differentiate bone tumors from other causes of lameness, such as arthritis. Most pets with bone cancer are euthanized because of pain. Amputation, medications, such as Fosamax, and analgesics may help to improve quality of life and survival times. An innovative surgery done at Colorado State University removes only the cancerous section of bone and utilizes a cadaver bone graft to spare the limb.

Yearly physical exams in younger pets and twice yearly exams in older pets are your best chance of early identification of cancer.

Early diagnosis is key in ensuring the best outcome and keeping your pet comfortable and happy for the longest time.

Meditation can benefit your heart and soul

ids. Job. Finances. Health. In almost everyone’s life, stress is a constant and unwelcome companion. But the ability to manage stress makes all the difference in quality of life.

According to a growing body of science-based research, just 20 to 30 minutes a day of meditation can make a bigger impact on your health than a handful of pills.

“Meditation reduced symptoms associated with depression, anxiety, pain and insomnia, and increased the overall quality of life,” said Dr. Sara Lazar, a neuroscientist with Harvard University, in a recent TED Talks. “In virtually every study [on effects of meditation] people are just happier and more satisfied with their life.”

Kim Saunders, owner of Lift Yoga and Body in Alpharetta, agrees with the science, and says the benefits go beyond medical.

“Meditation, breath work and yoga practice can create mental clarity and calmness,” said Saunders.

“Even a few minutes a day can improve your body awareness, improve your concentration and relax your mind.”

The first documented references to meditation appeared in India in 1500 BC, however many scholars believe the ancient art of relaxation has been around for more than 5,000 years.

Simply stated, meditation is “the act of giving your attention to only one thing, either as a religious activity or as a way of becoming calm and relaxed,” according to Webster’s dictionary.

Although numerous religions include elements of meditation, it is an integral part of the practice of Buddhism. “[Meditation] is the most important thing we can do,” according to the Buddhism Centre which has sites across the United States. “Buddhism teaches it is the only real antidote to our own personal sorrows, and to the anxieties, fears, hatreds and general confusions that beset the human condition.”

The roots of meditation are deeply planted in Eastern Asian culture and countries, but its influence began spreading into the Western hemisphere in the late 1700s as ancient texts were translated into English.

Meditation went mainstream in the late 1950s in the United States with the release of author Jack Kerouac’s book, “The Dharma Burns,” which chronicled his interest in Buddhism and meditation. That book coincided with – or perhaps helped fuel - the growing interest in Eastern religions in the 1960s.

There are a variety of meditation methods (see sidebar), but the one most often practiced in the U.S. is yoga. In a 2017 study by the National Institutes of Health, 18 million people (about 8 percent of the U.S. population) said they meditate on a regular basis, with the majority citing yoga as their preferred technique.

Meditation and illness

Stress kicks the body into “fight or flight” mode, releasing a torrent of hormones into the body to defend against a perceived intruder.

While it may be necessary for survival going back to our “caveman” roots, it can also disrupt the normal functions of major organs — the brain, stomach, nervous system and everything else that keeps us upright.

“You may think illness is to blame for that nagging headache, your frequent insomnia or your decreased productivity at work. But stress may actually be the culprit,” according to researchers at the Mayo Clinic.

In Dr. Lazar’s study (https://scholar. harvard.edu/sara_lazar), mediation was shown to literally change the brain.

She compared the brains of people who regularly meditate to a control group of those who don’t. She found the meditators maintained much higher levels of gray matter in their brain compared to a gradual loss in the control group.

Is it the gray matter in the front part of the brain that controls memory and executive decision making, and which tends to diminish as we age.

“Meditation can slow down or prevent the natural age-related decline in the brain,” she noted.

IN 6 EASY STEPS brain. The parts of the brain which deal with empathy and compassion was larger in those who meditate; the parts that deal with “fight or flight” — the stress makers — was smaller.

“This means the more you meditate the less time your body spends in this high stress behavior,” she said. “So people still had their stressful jobs, but they were able to respond to this stress better. It changed their reaction to their environment.”

Health officials caution that meditation is not a replacement for traditional medical treatment, but it may be a useful addition to other treatment.

Guided meditation. Sometimes called guided imagery or visualization, this method has you form mental images of places or situations you find relaxing.

You may be led through this process by a guide or teacher.

Mantra meditation. In this type of meditation, you silently repeat a calming word, thought or phrase to prevent distracting thoughts.

Mindfulness meditation. This technique focuses on achieving an increased awareness and acceptance of living in the present moment. The goal is to broaden your conscious awareness by focusing on what you experience during meditation, such as the flow of your breath.

Qi gong. This practice generally combines meditation, relaxation, physical movement and breathing exercises to restore and maintain balance. Qi gong (CHEE-gung) is part of traditional Chinese medicine.

Tai chi. This is a form of gentle Chinese martial arts. In tai chi (TIE-CHEE), you perform a self-paced series of postures or movements in a slow, graceful manner while practicing deep breathing.

Transcendental Meditation®. With this technique, you silently repeat a personally assigned mantra, such as a word, sound or phrase, in a specific way. This form of meditation allows your body to settle into a state of profound rest and relaxation, find inner peace, with little concentration or effort.

Yoga. This technique involves a series of postures and controlled breathing exercises to achieve a more flexible body and a calm mind. As you move through poses, you're encouraged to focus less on your busy day and more on the moment. ■

Choose your mantra. A mantra is a word or phrase that you silently repeat to yourself during meditation. This allows you to direct your attention on something other than your thoughts. You may use any phrase you like.

Some people like to use words like "Peace" or "Love." You may wish to use the So Hum mantra. This is a commonly used Sanskrit mantra, which literally translates to "I am."

Find a comfortable place to sit. Find a quiet location where you won't be disturbed.

There is no need to sit cross-legged on the floor unless that is comfortable for you. You can sit on a chair or sofa or on the floor with your back against a wall. The goal is to sit as upright as possible while still remaining comfortable.

Close your eyes and begin taking deep breaths. Start with a few "cleansing breaths" by inhaling slowly through your nose and then exhaling out your mouth. After a few cleansing breaths, continue to breathe at a normal relaxed pace through your nose with your lips gently closed.

Repeat your mantra silently to yourself. The repetition of your mantra is soft, gentle, relaxed and effortless – not forced. The mantra does not need to correlate with the breath. However if you choose to do so, do not become overly fixated on this. As your meditation continues, allow the breath to fall away into its own rhythm.

Do not try and stop your thoughts or empty your mind. As you continue, you will inevitably find you drift away from the mantra.

It is human nature for the mind to wander.

Whenever you become aware your attention has drifted away, simply return to silently repeating the mantra.

End the mantra. After approximately 20 to 30 minutes, you may stop repeating your mantra and continue sitting with your eyes closed. Be sure to spend a few minutes relaxing with your eyes closed before resuming activity.

Cancer and sex – really!

During and after the diagnosis

ost people respond to a cancer diagnosis with just one objective: how to survive. But there’s more to life than just survival; thriving through cancer means reclaiming those parts of life that bring us joy – including sex!

About 10 years ago, Kris Carr created a film called “Crazy Sexy Cancer,” a documentary about her experiences fighting cancer. While most people would think cancer is anything but sexy, Kris’ approach is to refuse to allow cancer to limit her experiences. She makes certain that life goes on after a cancer diagnosis; for more and more people, surviving cancer may not mean living cancer-free, but living with cancer.

For anyone in a committed relationship, coping with cancer is a couple’s challenge. At a time when the support of a loving partner is more important than ever, physical intimacy may suddenly be unthinkable. Besides the effects of the disease, treatments for cancer like surgery, radiation and chemotherapy are brutal and physical pain, exhaustion and nausea won’t make anyone feel sexy.

Even after treatment, how do you enjoy sex in a body that looks and feels very different than before? Women who lose one or both breasts to cancer, men who lose a testicle, have to focus their sense of sexuality on other aspects of themselves. Cancers of the cervix and prostate don’t change the outward appearance, but they affect sexual functioning. In the face of change, both partners have to adjust to “the new normal.”

Whether you are the survivor or the spouse, there are ways of keeping sex alive through cancer and beyond: Accept the changes. Know that there will be changes in sensation and function, as well as possibly appearance. Be open about your feelings. Grieve the losses. Acknowledge that you may have different 16 | northsidewoman.com | october2018

needs now, and that the healthy partner’s feelings and desires are important, too.

Focus on connection. Sex in a long-term relationship is not just about two bodies; it’s about the whole person. Think about the things that you cherish about each other that go beyond the physical, and let sex be an expression of those feelings. While some kinds of touch may be painful, other touch can be soothing; when tiredness is a problem, use some of the limited energy to connect with your partner in non-sexual ways Explore. If you or your partner’s body is different, find out what has changed. Some areas may have lost sensation, while others may be uncomfortably sensitive. Find out what feels good, what creates arousal, what leads to orgasm. Notice when energy levels are highest, and what environmental cues or mental turn-ons lead to eroticism.

Experiment. Now is the time to throw away the “should.” It’s ok to use tools (toys) and enhancements when you need them. If the old positions don’t work, try new positions, and augment with pillows or other supports as needed. If intercourse isn’t possible, use other forms of stimulation. “If it feels good, do it!”

Get help. Look for books on cancer and sex. Many oncologists fail to address issues of sexual functioning – don’t be afraid to ask. Seek out other professionals: urologists, pelvic floor therapists, sex therapists.

Communicate. Talk to each other about what you want and need.

Talk about how things are different, talk about what feels good and what doesn’t. True intimacy is about more than just sex – it requires openness and trust.

One final word: for people who are not partnered, a cancer diagnosis doesn’t have to mean living your life alone. You are more than a diagnosis, more than the sum of your body parts. If you want to experience life, love, sex, and intimacy, don’t be afraid to reach out for it.

Decorated Swimmer Makes Waves to Fight Cancer

umming resident Mary Ellen Blanchard Warta is a household name in the swimming world. In 1989, 15-year-old Warta broke the world record for the 200 yard short course, and held it for over 10 years. She was inducted to the Georgia Aquatic Hall of Fame in 2012. She has other accolades and awards during her swim career, but now she looks at her finish line as a cure for childhood cancer.

As a mother of three children, Warta settled into family life. Tragically, cancer struck her young family. Her young son Jonas, battled a retinoblastoma and lost his right eye in the process.

NSW: What drew you to SAA?

Warta: “Growing up swimming and knowing the leadership team at Swim Across America definitely drew me to the organization. When Swim Across America first came to Atlanta, Jonas was in the middle of his battle with retinoblastoma. We were asked to share our story and to motivate others to get involved. Sharing our story is always difficult, but if it means helping another child or family, we gather the strength to do it.”

Warta: “Yes, I am a senior enterprise account manager for Dell EMC here in Atlanta. My husband Jeff is in real estate and is also passionate about raising money to support ending pediatric cancer.

Life is always busy, but having gone through this experience with Jonas put our lives into perspective. Our family, led by our faith in God, has learned to appreciate every day and every minute with each other.”

Lanier Islands Sunset Cove was the location for the most recent open water swim fundraising event for the SAA in September. Over five hundred registered swimmers and former Olympians attended the event.

Kids Just Choose Books donates books to area schools

A

s a longtime educator, Shelby Steinhauer knows the path to success in school, and ultimately life, begins inside the pages of a book. Within the pages, the world unfolds – teaching lessons, prompting questions and making the unfamiliar familiar.

It does not take a scientific study (although there are many available) to prove the critical link between literacy and achievement. And the earlier the love of reading develops, the more that child will thrive.

Inside her classrooms, Steinhauer was able to reach students who came her way and instill those lifelong lessons. After transitioning from a high school and middle school French teacher to a paraprofessional this year, her focus is now on expanding that reach to bring books and love of reading to all children, regardless of circumstances.

“I want all children to have access to books, no strings attached,” said Steinhauer, a teacher’s assistant in special education at Alpharetta Elementary. “I want children to also know the joy of passing on their books to someone who will love them.”

Her project began several years ago, with the seed planted by a long-time friend and colleague at Milton

“Gayley mentioned her sister, Melanie Middleton, a kindergarten teacher in Durham (N.C.), had a bookshelf outside her classroom where children from any grade could come by and choose a book — not just to borrow — but to keep,” Steinhauer said. “Gayley suggested we could go to thrift stores and look for some books for the shelf.”

It was more than a love of books and children that tied Steinhauer and Crockett together. Both had suffered profound losses – the death of Crockett’s daughter, Kate, in 2012, from cancer, and the death of Steinhauer’s sister, Natalie Richman, two years later following a long battle with depression.

“Gayley helped me to survive that first year as I struggled with the shock and finality of my sister's death,” recalled Steinhauer, who stayed with the Crockett’s in the year following her sister’s death. “At a time when I couldn’t do much of anything, I somehow thought, well, maybe I can do this.”

They began searching thrift shops and garage sales, collecting gently used books. Steinhauer started book drives in her classes and clubs and the books began coming in.

her small group of volunteers and book lovers were collecting for schools and children in the Atlanta area, as well.

“Somewhere between that day and now, we've been finding the most beautiful children's books – thousands and thousands of books. And somewhere along the way, as each Gayley and Shelby biking on the American Tobacco book made its Trail in Durham. way to a child, I realized I was doing it for Kate.

And somewhere farther along the way, I realized it brought me joy,” Steinhauer said.

And that’s how Kids Just Choose Books began, named after Katherine Julia Crockett who inspired Steinhauer.

Gayley Crockett said her daughter, Kate, had a lifelong love of reading. She recalls her daughter as a young child taking her books with her to basketball games when her father, AG, coached at Roswell High School.

“After she majored in English and ended up as a literary agent in New York City, we always joked that she was working in a box of books, as the office was lined with book shelves of free books,” Gayley said.

Although Gayley and her husband moved back to Durham a few years ago, they pick up boxes of books when they visit Atlanta, and

Steinhauer also drives the books there when she visits.

Collected books that do not go to schools are donated to Little Free Libraries in Roswell where people can take or leave books as they choose. That relationship helped solve a dilemma of what to do with books that were too “loved” or “adult” to be given to school children, Steinhauer noted.

She and her mother, Carol, are in the process of sponsoring two Little Free Libraries in Roswell. One would be in memory of Kate Crockett; the second for Natalie Richman, who was the principal of Sweet Apple Elementary in Roswell at the time of her death.

Looking into the future, Steinhauer says she would love to expand Kids Just Choose Books to other schools – locally, regionally and state wide.

“I have a vision of collecting books in Fulton County to distribute to other areas of the state where students may not have access to programs that provide books,” she said. “This is long-term, far-reaching goal, and I would need community and school district help/support to achieve it.”

To that end, she knows it is not a solo effort, but the commitment of many. Steinhauer said she never wants KJC books to be about her, but simply about providing children with a “refuge” in a book.

SHELBY STEINHAUER “I want to be a part of making sure that every child, no matter the background or level of education of his/her parents, has access to books,” she said. “Success to me means delivering as many books as possible to as many children as possible.”

For Steinhauer, being involved in this project is not intended to replace her grief with purpose.

“This may be true for some people, but for me the loss is permanent,” Steinhauer said. “I don’t believe that collecting books is ‘a good that came out of tragedy’...I just believe that it is good. Period.”

And this is where the books come in.

“Each day I have a choice: sit and stare at the wall, which is what I did and still do on many days, or do some good in the world. I choose door number two as often as I can. It is always good to give a kid a book.” ■

Are you a Free Range Parent…or the new term given to us parents…A Lawnmower Parent ?

It’s been said that children do not come with a manual….but in today’s world of parenting scrutiny, parents seem to adhere to a “manual”…. their own chosen style of parenting that they become “known for” in their child’s social and academic world.

The Helicopter Parent: Parents that hover over their child not allowing frustration management to naturally occur in the development stages. This takes place from the toddler to the college level child and may create a young adult who doesn’t have self-management skills or self-reliability to make their own decisions.

The Hummingbird Parent: Parents that swoop in IF they see a situation becoming too hard for their child to manage. While being similar to the Helicopter Parent, the Hummingbird Parent allows their child to try and manage situations, but if the outcome is not one that is desirable for the child or the parent, the Hummingbird Parent will intervene and correct.

The Free Range Parent: A parent that allows their child to manage choices that do not require a parent’s decision making…letting their child take the risk of a decision and having them withstand the consequence of that decision. This type of parent believes that allowing children to be comfortable or uncomfortable with a decision will make them better decision makers when the consequences are higher as they become young adults.

And now the Lawnmower Parent who will, without a moment’s hesitation, “mow down” anything or anyone in the way of whatever they see as may be an obstacle in their child’s happiness or success.

Do you see yourself in any of the above descriptions? Some of us may see ourselves as a combination of all three, but leading psychologists argue that cannot be the case. My boys are both in their 20s and I am still navigating the parenting waters! I was not “parented” into my 20s…..were you?

Parenting…..it’s the most confusing and rewarding experience of our adult life. Boy – sometimes I wish I had a Helicopter or Lawnmower Parent of my own to make decisions for ME ! ■

Color me fall!

Here’s a fall color tour that you can fine tune to suit, no matter how ambitious you feel.

o we were talking about discovering fall colors for this month’s edition of Northside Woman.

“Sure!” I said. “We can talk about lots and lots of great fall leaf drives!”

“Great!” said Suzanne, Northside Woman’s worthy publisher. “How about 800 words?”

What? Just 800 words? I was thinking more like 35,000, give or take a few.

But in the interest of journalistic obedience, 800 it is. I decided to focus on a single fall color road trip and profile it for you here. The drive alone is a tasty treat for anyone who appreciates fall color, and (for those who have time) I’ll season it further with a dash of hiking and a pinch of waterfall spice too.

So grab the camera and let’s go!

This particular loop begins in White County near the storied town of Helen. Starting at the Alt. 75/Ga. 348 intersection, turn onto Ga. 348.

The scenery is immediately spectacular, but to experience the area’s fall color even more completely you’ll want to look for the Dukes Creek Falls parking area on your left. Parking costs $4. Bring dollar bills.

Once you’re parked, it’s a moderate 1.2-mile downhill hike to the falls. The first tenth of a mile is handicapped accessible and provides a view for those with mobility challenges. For the close-up, though, take 28 | northsidewoman.com | october2018

the trail. After a couple of switchbacks, it ends LOOP OVERVIEW: at two observation platforms. Note that the From the intersection of Ga. Just before Helen, turn right on Ga. Alt. 75 You’ll love Dukes to complete the loop.

Creek Falls and the fall color that surrounds it, but eventually it’ll be time for the (uphill) hike back to your car. Including time to appreciate the falls, give yourself 1.5 to 2 hours to make the roundtrip hike.

A bit further along 348 is another trailhead of interest to fans of falls — Raven Cliffs Falls, to be precise. This unique waterfall drops through a fissure in the face of the mountain itself, a crack which formed eons ago when a massive piece of mountain split free and slipped a few yards downhill.

The trail to Raven Cliffs Falls ranges from wide and easy to (in a few places) rough and challenging. It’s particularly so right at the falls, where there are no formal observation areas and where the footing can be quite tricky. Do not try to climb the falls itself under any circumstances.

The hike to Raven Cliff Falls is about 2.5 miles each way, and you’ll pass several other impressive falls as you go. This one is uphill all the way to the falls…but blessedly downhill most all the way back. Allow

about three hours to make the roundtrip hike.

Back on 348, you’ll notice several scenic overlooks as you continue along. Check them out as you go. When 348 ends, turn right on Ga. 180 and go about seven miles to a left turn onto 180-Spur and the next stop on this loop. In fact, it’s the high point of the trip – literally – at the summit of Georgia’s highest peak, Brasstown Bald.

With an elevation of 4,784 ft., Brasstown Bald is the perfect place to see fall color. There’s a $5 admission fee, which includes a shuttle to the summit. However, if you’re up to it, you can also get there on foot by hiking the paved trail from the parking area to the top. It’s a moderate six-tenths of a mile from the parking area to the summit. The spectacular scenery along this trail is worth every bit of effort, and many consider this to be one of the most beautiful fall hikes in Georgia. If you only have time for one hike along this loop, this one may be the one to choose.

After experiencing Brasstown Bald, return to Ga. 180. Turn left to continue the loop, which (after about 5 miles) takes you to Ga. 17/75. There, turn right – and if you’re up to it, there’s a little more hiking ahead!

You’ll find that hiking at Unicoi Gap, where you’ll cross the Appalachian Trail. Yes, it’s probably getting late, and you’re probably ready for supper. But you may want to stop in the parking area at Unicoi Gap and hike at least a few yards of the AT – maybe just so that you say that you have hiked a piece of this storied trail.

Whether you have just a few minutes or several hours left in your day, stretching your legs on the AT is a perfect way to wrap up a day spent awash in the incredible fall color of the north Georgia mountains. ■

A great fall color route (one of many in the state!) is the GA 348-GA 180-GA 17/75 - GA 75 Alt loop near Helen. In addition to the stops mentioned in the article, also consider a hike to High Shoals Falls, a visit to Smithgall Woods State Park, and a stop at Vogel State Park too. Gasthaus Tirol, 310 Atlanta Road in Cumming, has been serving goulash, schnitzels, spatzle and other traditional German dishes for decades along with newer culinary delights and vegetarian options. And of course, no meal is complete without a German draft beer — over a dozen different varieties to choose from — that visitors can enjoy in the restaurant’s Bier Garden.

Originally opened in 1995 by Herman and Heidi Eisele as the Gasthaus la Cafe, Gasthaus Tirol is still going strong under new management.

Brian Noeske and Reinhold Weger have co-owned the restaurant for more than four years after Weger bought the business from the Eiseles in the early 2000s. Weger, the Austriantrained executive chef, renamed the restaurant after a state in Austria, Tirol, where he had his apprenticeship.

The new management came with more additions to the menu, namely more food options when Gasthaus Tirol transitioned from a cafe to a restaurant. But longtime fans and new visitors can still choose from a hearty selection of specialty drinks, coffees and desserts Gasthaus la Cafe was known for.

And no matter what, Noeske said the staff strives to maintain the restaurant’s original vision with good food, service and smiles.

“We want to maintain its authenticity for food and service, a nice meal and atmosphere, to make it a pleasure to eat here,” he said.

On select nights, diners are also treated to live music and shows as they dig into their schnitzel or salad. Other events include beer or wine tastings, spätzle eating contests and Oktoberfest deals.

Noeske, who has served as the general manager for over eight years, has been in the restaurant business since high school, where he learned the “ins and outs” of the business.

His first experience got him hooked. The best part, he said, is helping people smile.

“It’s a very pleasurable business,” Noeske said. “You’re making people happy.”

That hasn’t changed with his latest venture at Gasthaus Tirol.

The restaurant is open Tuesday thru Sunday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and again from 5-9 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, it is open till 10 p.m.

Its most popular dishes, Noeske said, include Wiener Schnitzel and the Sampler Plate, which offers a trio of meats – a Weiner Schnitzel, sauerbraten and choice of either bratwurst, knockwurst or Debrezina sausage.

Football season means football parties and games, and before you spend a ton of money this season, I’m here to give you a few tips on how to navigate the next few months cheaply: • Use INWEGO: With this app, $29/month gives you unlimited access to shows, concerts, games, etc. in your city. Yes, it’s actually unlimited. I also thought it sounded too good to be true, but I have seen friends use INWEGO and it is legitimate.

• Save on parking: If you are attending a game, have one friend park close to the stadium while everyone else parks farther away. Cost can then split among everyone, making it cheaper overall while still having a good tailgating spot.

• Choose cheaper games: It’s obvious that some games will be much more expensive than others. Choose to attend cheaper games throughout the year so that you still get the experience without the price tag.

• Light snacks instead of full meals: If you’re throwing a party, tell your guests that you will provide “light snacks” so they will know to eat a full meal before arriving. This will reduce your overall party cost and hopefully make your day a little less stressful.

• Don’t buy the merch: There’s no reason for needing a new team shirt every year. Wear last year’s apparel and save a ton on this year’s expensive jerseys. Trust me, it’s worth the savings.

Perfect pumpkin Fall decor tips spice latte

2 Tbsp. vanilla protein powder with about 100 calories per serving (like the kind by Quest Nutrition or Tera's Whey) 1 packet no-calorie sweetener (like Truvia) 2 tsp. instant coffee granules 1/4 tsp. pumpkin pie spice, or more for topping 2 Tbsp. canned pure pumpkin 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk Optional: natural light whipped topping

DIRECTIONS: 1.

Place protein powder, sweetener, coffee granules and pumpkin pie spice in a tall microwave-safe mug or glass. Add 3/4 cup water, and mix well. Microwave for 45 seconds, or until hot.

2. Stir until protein powder and coffee granules have dissolved. Add canned pumpkin, and stir until uniform.

3. Add almond milk, and mix well. Microwave for another 45 seconds, or until hot.

all is by far my most favorite time of the year. I just love when the crisp air starts rolling in and the leaves begin to change color. As the weather transitions from summer to fall, it is time to add those simple touches of fall accents to your decor. See below for my easy tips on adding fall decor to your home.

1. I am usually very picky about faux greenery or plants, but recently I spent some time at 9 Design in Roswell and discovered the most beautiful faux foliage throughout the shop. Adding fall branches or stems to a large vase, urn or even a metal bucket can give you and your guests a warm, all welcome. Try placing your foliage on your mantel, kitchen island or a dining room table. If brightly colored fall foliage isn’t your thing, think outside the box and cut some bare branches from your yard instead.

2. Cozy and fall are two words that go hand in hand in my opinion. Swap out your summer pillows and throws for cozy ones. Maybe bring in a wool plaid or checkered print pillow, or even an antelope or leopard print. If those patterns don’t work with your decor, add a solid fur or leather pillow for a different texture on your sofa. Adding fur throws to the backs of chars or layering a chunky knit blanket in a basket is also a cozy, fall look.

3. Lastly, an easy fall display is to fill a dough bowl, vintage or new, with lots of fall! Gourds of all shapes, sizes and color, pumpkins, pine cones and faux leaves will give interest and texture without being too fussy. Another favorite tip is to fill your dough bowl with lots of mini white pumpkins for a simple fall look!

Planting a crazy rich fall vegetable garden

ere in the South the growing season, like the social season, never ends. The arrival of fall doesn’t mean goodbye to your vegetable garden. More like hello to new priorities and plant varieties.

During the hot dry days of summer we went full throttle on irrigation to keep crops alive. The temperatures are declining; now is the time to start tapping those water brakes. You won’t need to be so heavyhanded to keep fall vegetables hydrated.

When it comes to soil prep it’s time to pick a side: #TeamDig or #TeamNoDig. For #TeamDig go full on Rihanna and get ready to werk, werk, werk, werk, werk werk, the dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt. See what I did there?! Incorporate amendments such as compost or well-rotted manure into your vegetable plot. This will make the soil more fertile come spring. Or maybe you rock with #TeamNoDig. Then come on through with your MC Hammer pants and gold-rimmed shades. Y’all

Woman-focused rideshare comes to Atlanta

Safr to start service this month

omen who use rideshare services are often wary when riding alone – and with good reason. Last year alone more than 100 assaults on women by rideshare drivers were reported to police; and law enforcement officials believe many more crimes go unreported.

In August, a 25-year-old student at the University of Georgia was raped by a 54-year-old man posing as a rideshare driver. The driver was preying on his victims in downtown Athens late at night, scouring for women waiting on a rideshare. He had picked up a 21-year-old student just an hour before, but that woman was able to get out of the car when she realized he was not her Uber driver.

While both Uber and Lyft are ramping up their safety protocols to keep passengers – and drivers – safe, a new entry into the rideshare marketplace is taking the safety of women to a new level.

Boston-based Safr is getting set to launch in Atlanta this fall, with a women-only ridesharing service focused solely on the safety and empowerment of women. Atlanta joins a handful of other cities in the country, including Boston, Orlando, Dallas, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. where Safr will be available.

“In light of the recent sexual assault allegations on drivers of other ridesharing companies, Safr was built with the needs of women in

mind and aims to improve the lives of women everywhere through safe transportation, job creation, and financial security,” said Kelly O’Shea, spokeswoman for Safr.

She added Safr drivers are personally vetted and undergo comprehensive background checks in criminal and motor vehicle history at a level higher than other rideshare services.

“Safr’s in-ride security features make sure riders arrive at their destination safely, or immediate assistance will be on the way,” O’Shea said. “Our drivers are also paid more than the industry standard and are incentivized to provide best in-class service.”

To keep both passengers and drivers safe, Safr allows riders to preselect the gender of their driver though their app profile. Currently that option is not automatically allowed on other ridesharing services.

Other Safr features include: • In-person interviews and driving sessions with each driver.

• Drivers and passengers are assigned a color for each ride, and colors must be verified by both parties to ensure the driver is picking up the correct passenger.

• Rides are tracked by Safr Command Center to make sure drivers do not deviate from the appropriate route.

• If a passenger or driver is uncomfortable in their Safr ride, or in case of an emergency, users can hit the Safr SOS button. The app will notify the user’s “in case of emergency” contact list and will respond to the user via text.

Safr also donates a portion of every fare to charities supporting women, children, animals, environment and communities.

“Wherever women go and whatever they are doing, Safr wants to be a part of their lives and help make them easier,” O’Shea said.■

I don’t have any hidden secret to Premier Dermatology’s success per se. I have been trained by exceptional physicians and I work with exceptional DR. TAYLOR people. I strive to always be patient-centered, to put the patient first, to read up, perform extra research for my patients and advocate for them.

Quality controls, back-up systems and patient care processes are an area of special interest for me. I have been an airplane pilot for over ten years, and I believe the strategies for safety and quality that aviation emphasizes have translated into improved processes within my own practice.

But most importantly, I really owe so much to our amazing staff!

Given that we are a small practice with only 7 staff members, I am beyond thankful for their expertise, compassion and the concern that they have for our patients.

We spend a lot of time together given our 10 to 12 hour work days, so it is invaluable that we all get along and not only like our jobs but strive to excel and improve our processes. Is there something you feel sets yourself apart from the other physicians in the area?

Dr. Taylor: Actually I do believe I spend an unusual amount of time with my patients. As a procedural dermatologist, I am used to a smaller volume of patients with longer visits so that translates over to my general dermatology patients. (With a laugh) Granted sometimes that means my schedule runs behind, but ultimately our patients leave knowing that they received thorough, high quality care.

And I appreciate the understanding my patients show me, because I think that they can tell that if I am running behind that it is because I chose to give a prior patient the time he or she needed rather than run on schedule.

Regarding Mohs surgery and vein care, my fellowship covered multiple aspects of surgical dermatology, so I feel that I am able to address some of the extra concerns that patients may have that would otherwise be referred out to other specialists, and I perform these services at the level you would expect from someone who is fellowshiptrained and board-certified.

For example, I can treat medically significant vein disease with various procedures such as laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy then, once resolved, clear up the cosmetic vein issues with sclerotherapy or laser treatments.

I am also one of the only physicians in Georgia with the ability to cure melanoma with true Mohs surgery. In general, these would be treated by different specialists or would be treated using non-equivalent techniques.

Screening can save half of Americans from Cardiovascular Disease

merica’s number one killer is on the rise. New statistics show 18 million Americans died from some form of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in 2015. The American Heart Association predicts this number will increase 25% by the year 2030. That’s over 26 million deaths per year. Fortunately, advancements in screening prove that it’s possible to prevent CVD before it’s too late.

CVD includes heart and blood related conditions. Heart disease is responsible for 1 in 3 deaths making it the top killer among Americans.

However, strokes are just as serious. Every 40 seconds, someone in the US has a stroke and almost one-quarter of the attacks are recurrent.

Genetics, lifestyle and environment can play a key role in determining your cardiovascular health. However, even those who live healthy lives can still be at risk for CVD. About half of American adults have at least one of three major risk factors and a majority do not realize until a heart attack or stroke strikes. These factors include uncontrolled high blood pressure, uncontrolled high LDL cholesterol, and current smoking. Controlling these factors can decrease the chance for heart attack or stroke by 80%. Luckily, all of the risks can be easily screened for to help patients prevent CVD. Age is another factor in a person’s life when it comes to CVD. By the time an adult reaches 45, their risk for deadly heart and blood conditions has more than doubled. From there it nearly doubles again once a person

hits 80. This is one of the reasons that the AHA claims early prevention to be so important.

Those who are aware of their own risk factors at an early age and work to control them through a healthy lifestyle can reduce their chances of suffering from CVD later in life.

Despite the cost on sufferer’s lives, CVD can become expensive when left untreated. In 2013 heart attacks and Coronary Heart Disease accounted for over $21 billion worth of hospital treatments making them the most expensive conditions in the U.S., and they aren’t getting any cheaper. The AHA projects these medical costs to double by 2030.

“Rather than treating illness when it is far advanced,” Says the American Heart Association in its Projections through 2035, “ [We] advocate for heart-healthy habits and wellness throughout a person’s life – and the earlier the better. The patient is then escorted to the dental chair. They gradually progress to a deeper level of sedation but are still able to respond to their environment and to questions from the doctor. Dr. Patel explains, “The patient will feel no pain and in fact will have little or no memory of the experience after it’s all over.”

The patient’s vital signs are constantly monitored throughout the treatment. “When they awaken a friend drives them home and in an hour or so they are pretty much back to normal,” says Dr. Patel. “The best part is that they have no bad memories, and they don’t experience any pain or anxiety.”

The patient isn’t “knocked out” or in total sedation like they would be for a surgery. The level of sedation isn’t that deep, but just deep enough so that they feel nothing but are still conscious.

When is the best time to get the flu vaccine?

Each year, it is important to be prepared and protect you and your family from getting the flu. It is especially important for adults 65 years of age and older, people living in nursing homes or long-term care facilities and those who are at high risk for flu-related complications.

The cold and the flu are similar, yet they are two different conditions. They are both caused by viruses that are contagious. The cold is often mild, starts slow, and can last longer. The flu (influenza) is often much more severe and appears very suddenly but does not last long.

There are several things you can do to protect against getting sick.

You may still get a cold and the flu, but these tips can help prevent or lessen your symptoms.

• Wash your hands often. This can help stop germs from spreading.

• Eat healthy, be active, and get enough sleep. These help to boost your immune system and keep your body strong.

• Cough and sneeze into your elbow. Think about all the germs you spread if you use your hands.

• Use antibacterial products to clean surfaces. These products help to disinfect germs and should be used throughout your home.

Common areas are tables and countertops. Do not forget to clean door handles, light switches, and your child’s toys.

• Stay home when you are sick. You can be contagious before you have symptoms and after you start to feel better. Avoid places where you may spread the virus.

• Stay away from people at risk. Try to avoid young children and

babies, pregnant women, people age 65 or older, and anyone with a chronic condition, such as asthma. People in these groups are at higher risk for flu-related complications.

The best way to protect against the flu is to get the seasonal influenza vaccine. People 6 months of age or older should get the flu vaccine. This is by recommendation of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Bringing women’s pelvic health to the forefront

M

ore and more we read about the struggles of prominent personalities and celebrities dealing with issues such as pelvic pain and urinary leakage. As a physician helping women deal with these common issues, I feel a sense of satisfaction in knowing that women are opening up more readily about their unique pelvic floor disorders. Just as much as diabetes and stroke DR. ANSARI detection and prevention are pertinent to us, so should women’s pelvic health as it has societal implications and impacts families every day.

According to a 2014 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, 61% of women over 65 years old not living in an institution (e.g. nursing home) suffer from urinary or bowel incontinence. Among those living in a state-regulated residential care facility, 41% of women suffer from urine and/or bowel incontinence. Last calculated, the national cost of bladder incontinence was approximately $20 billion per year, which includes purchasing of daily anti-incontinence products and laundry. Incontinence is not only a costly burden, but prevents those suffering from living life to the fullest. Simple pleasures like going out to a movie with a loved one, watching your grandchild’s extracurricular game, impromptu lunches with friends, and romantic dates become seemingly insurmountable challenges. Still other issues, like interstitial cystitis or levator spasms, may cause chronic pelvic pain and difficulties with intimacy. Unfortunately, even among physicians, the knowledge of these disorders can be limited to the point that diagnosis and treatment are further delayed. Women may have unrecognized co-existing pelvic conditions or be misdiagnosed with recurrent urinary tract infections, endometriosis, or psychologic condition.

Research over time has furthered our understanding of normal female pelvic function and related disorders. Likewise, our ability to prevent, manage and even cure some pelvic floor conditions has grown immensely. However, the biggest remaining obstacle we face in addressing women’s pelvic health issues is often our inability to discuss these “taboo” issues freely. We can change this by speaking up about our pelvic issues with our mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, and partners. By encouraging dialogue, exchanging information, and enhancing our pelvic health knowledge we can breakdown the barriers that make discussion of pelvic floor disorders “taboo” and allow more women to get therapies they deserve in order to live happier and fuller lives. ■
