ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Portions of Rucker Road were closed for two hours Aug. 30 morning while police and a GBI bomb squad investigated a suspicious object containing black powder and a fuse.

The road was reopened after the teams determined that it was a homemade, improvised firework.

Residents on Rucker Road called police when a couple found a large round item in their backyard with burn marks on it. Neighbors told police that they heard two loud booms

that night in the area. The fire department had been brought in to investigate then but found nothing.

“No concerns, nobody was trying to hurt, no danger to anybody,” said Public Safety Director John Robison.

Police still took the device elsewhere to safely detonate it away from other people.

Robinson said they were still investigating, so no charges have been filed yet. He added that the police take such incidents seriously and investigate each one.

Drive, Kennesaw, was arrested Aug. 21 on Webb Bridge Road, Alpharetta, for possession of marijuana and having alcohol in a park. ►► James Evan Elling, 28, of Manning Drive, Alpharetta, was arrested Aug. 22 on Manning Drive, Alpharetta, for possession of heroin, possession of Mustang zoom by. Even at 110 mph, police had a hard time catching up with the two cars.

Eventually, the Mustang slowed down but the Altima continued to speed away. Police pursued the Altima and pulled it over. The driver, Joy Ojehomon of Roswell, said she was not racing but speeding to get to her child’s school to drop off a paper before the end of the day. She was arrested for racing on a highway, reckless driving first offense and speeding.

The officer said that he did not pursue or charge the Mustang driver because he was the only officer in pursuit and could only stop one vehicle.

Fake $100 bill turns up at local restaurant FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A $100 bill, printed with “for motion picture use only,” was cashed Aug. 20 at a local restaurant. The 21-year-old waitress said her friend contacted her asking if she could get change for a $100 bill and bring it to the parking lot of the restaurant. She did the exchange and said she didn’t know the bill was fake.

She said she barely knows the friend.

No cameras were in the area of the exchange, but she said the exchange occurred in a black SUV. She had the phone number of her friend, but her phone was dead.

Keratoconus is an eye condition in which the normally dome-shaped cornea progressively thins resulting in a cone-like bulging that in turn causes significant visual impairment in some patients. In more severe cases, everyday activities such as driving or reading can be challenging due to poor vision.

Keratoconus is usually first diagnosed in a patient’s teenage years, but can sometimes go undiagnosed until a decade or two later. Researchers estimate that keratoconus affects 1 in 2,000 people, and affects men and women equally with no differences between races or ethnicities. The exact cause of keratoconus is unknown, but some patients have a genetic predisposition to developing it. It is also associated with allergies and other environmental factors, as researchers believe that rubbing the eye can cause the cornea to change shape and weaken, resulting in irregular astigmatism and vision distortion.

The cornea is often called the window of the eye, and helps to refract or bend light coming into the eye. Therefore, abnormalities in the shape of the cornea significantly affect how a patient sees. In the early stages of keratoconus, a patient may observe slight blurring and distortion of their vision. As the disease progresses, a patient may need to have their glasses or contact lens prescription changed frequently to manage their fluctuating vision and change in corneal shape. Keratoconus may progress for the next 10-20 years and then slow or stabilize. In most cases, the disease affects both eyes. Each eye may progress differently, meaning one eye may have a more severe case than the other. The timing of onset between eyes may also vary. Although total blindness is not generally the case for patients with keratoconus, in severe cases, functional vision can be so significantly impaired, that simple everyday activities can be extremely difficult.

Councilmembers have heated exchange before meeting

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Councilmembers Matt Kunz and Joe Longoria exchanged heated words prior to a Milton City Council meeting Aug. 28 that was called to extend the qualifying period for Longoria’s District 3, Post 1 seat.

Longoria had misunderstood the time qualifying ended on Aug. 25, stating it was no one’s fault but his own.

The fiery discussion continued during the meeting.

Longoria said Kunz stated to him, “Just show up,” before the meeting began. Longoria said he thought Kunz was “giving him a hard time,” but Kunz’s tone changed and he raised his voice.

Longoria stood up and approached Kunz, trying to identify the issue, he said.

“I’ve seen [Kunz] get excited and I’ve

seen him get emotional,” Longoria said.

“But that wasn’t what this was. He was mad.”

Kunz had passed a tipping point, Longoria said. After stating he felt things could get out of control, Longoria said he backed off KUNZ and ignored what Kunz was saying.

When the meeting began, Kunz shared his discontent with Longoria.

“I am ticked that we have to be here,” Kunz said. “I don’t think there’s any excuse for people to not give effort as a city councilman. I come in here day-in and day-out to fight for the very promises I make. I see people that don’t give effort and they want us to make amends for an entitlement issue.”

“I can’t vote for this,” Kunz said later in the meeting. “[The citizens] deserve people who show up, people who work and people who come to meet-

ings.”

In a statement on Facebook, Kunz said he was “disappointed in a councilman with incredible talent failed to make the effort to qualify during the qualifying period. The football coach in me let him know we need to give effort to make Milton a great place.”

Longoria wasn’t happy with that reasoning.

“That makes no sense whatsoever,” Longoria said. “It’s 100 percent inapplicable.”

Longoria said the council members are all professionals, not football players.

“We don’t draw inspiration from conflict,” he said. “We draw from rational discussion. We seek leadership in those who can inspire, not those who berate or show inappropriate emotion.”

Kunz said both councilmembers have since apologized.

“I regret the circumstances that happened between councilman Longoria and me,” he said. “I hope that time can heal the wounds between us and we can put this past us.”

But Longoria stated he did not want the occurrence to be a “non-event.”

“I’m embarrassed the event occurred at all,” he said.

John Eaves steps down as county commission chairman

ATLANTA – Fulton County Commission Chairman John Eaves resigned his seat Aug. 23, citing plans to run for Atlanta mayor this fall. Eaves first took office as chairman in 2007, and was re-elected in 2010 and 2014.

Vice Chairman Bob Ellis, District 2, will serve as the commission’s interim chairman until the seat is filled.

Ellis gained notoriety recently by joining with Eaves to campaign against the 2017 property assessments mailed to residents in June. Ellis and Eaves EAVES hosted close to a dozen town hall meetings, many across North Fulton, to address large increases in property values assigned to homeowners.

That protest ultimately resulted in a successful move by the County Commission to roll back residential property assessments to 2016 levels.

A special election will be held on Nov. 7 to fill the remainder of the current term for the chairman’s seat, which ends December 31, 2018.

The Fulton County Board of Registration & Elections is expected to hold a special called meeting this week to formally call for the election and to establish the qualifying period.

Local groups organize help in wake of Hurricane Harvey devastation

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA — Local businesses, organizations and residents are gathering items, collecting money or heading down to Houston to help in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

Employees at Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road, whose corporate office is in Houston, are collecting small items including diapers, canned food and toiletries.

Harry Norman Realtors, 1664 Market Place Boulevard, in the Cumming area is working with PALS, a local nonprofit that works with animals and their owners. They’re collecting bottled water and pet food.

Volunteers said they are hoping the people and animals make it through safely. They said they take particular interest in those with animals who are struggling to keep them while evacuating.

John Adams at Indigo Restaurant, 12635 Crabapple Road Suite 120, in Milton said they are holding a Texasstyle dinner from 5 p.m. to closing on Sept. 13 with all proceeds benefitting the Harvey victims. “I’m saddened to hear the news,�

Adams said. “It breaks my heart to see those people suffering like that. We just wanted to reach out and give them a big heart to go along with the big Lone Star State over there.�

Fulton Schools still waiting for more than 1,400 students Actual enrollment below projected numbers; increases expected

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Schools across Fulton County are still waiting for a surge in students after Labor Day, with enrollment after the first two weeks coming in at 1,430 students below projected numbers.

Fulton School officials say the numbers tend to rise after the first holiday of the school year when students from other parts of the country accustomed to later start dates come into Fulton Schools.

While this trend is most often seen in South Fulton schools, increased numbers after the first two weeks occurs system-wide.

“Looking at the 10-day report, we are under what we projected but that’s not uncommon,” said Susan Hale, Fulton Schools’ spokesperson. “We traditionally experience a surge in enrollment after Labor Day.” School planners had projected 96,676 students for the 2017-18 school year; the 10-day count came in at 95,246. That total retains Fulton School System as the state’s fourth largest, behind Gwinnett, Cobb and DeKalb.

The lower student numbers were seen across the system and through all grade levels, including high schools in North Fulton where parents had feared the projections were way too low.

Most area high schools came in below or near projected numbers, which could be an issue if the post-Labor Day surge occurs.

As anticipated, elementary numbers in North Fulton continue to fall – a combination of lower birth rates and housing prices moving beyond the reach of young families. In the 30 elementary schools in North Fulton, actual enrollment was 165 students below projections, with wide swings seen throughout the area.

And there is no one quite so perfectly situated to prick the balloons of self-puffery as a spouse. A spouse sees you at your best, your worst and all ports in between. It is a rare person indeed who can maintain one’s public persona once inside the four walls of home. Inevitably one gives in to those human foibles that we are all heir to.

You learn to curb most of them. You don’t kick off your shoes in the living room and leave them there. The laundry basket is there for a purpose. You learn to leave the seat down.

The point is there is one person who has got the goods on you. And that person knows that there is every possibility that all your failures, all your sins of omission and commission, all of your shortcomings could be revealed at the drop of a pin.

And if you can get past that, you have a good chance having a happy marriage.

My Lady Wife and I have shared more than a few years together now.

We know when to give some space and when to fill a void. We negotiate and bargain over a raft of those small arenas that collectively make up living together. This bargaining is almost always unspoken.

To name it is to create a problem.

But you see a thing left undone, and so you do it.

Again, you see a thing left undone and you do it again. After a certain period of time you realize this is your part of the collective tasks that makes up living together.

It is one of those small negotiations that I could ignore or take on. And if I really think of the negotiations I have lost over the years, I usually think about the perks that make up for them.

There is the self-replenishing sock and underwear drawer in the bedroom.

It wasn’t always that way. I can remember My Lady Wife early in the marriage would always comment on how “manly” I looked in doing some task. She would comment on she liked how “decisively I drove” or how “graceful I looked” as I flitted around making the bed.

And so it went until one day she could not restrain herself from saying, “You look so masterful taking out the garbage.”

That’s when the light went on. OK, I have a healthy amount of male ego. But NOBODY looks masterful taking out the garbage. And only on the rarest of occasions has my name and the word “graceful” ever appeared in the same sentence (unless accompanied by the words “three-legged billy goat”).

So score one for My Lady Wife. But I have a few tried and true tactics of my own. And no, I won’t give them up now.

Every once in a while she does read one of my columns.

My thoughts turned in this direction because she has been gone almost a week now. She and two friends from the neighborhood went off for a week at the beach. My neighbor Russ agreed to be their driver, host and bartender.

In fact it was Russ’ idea for the trip (there’s a birthday involved). So I have had the week off, as it were.

Needless to say, I am getting weary of bumping into the furniture with no one to provide directions.

So I have spiffed up the place, all spic and also span. I won’t have to say anything. But she will have certainly noticed the housekeeping. Just my way of saying, “I missed you.”

And so it goes, not game perhaps, not set, but certainly a match.

Handel hosts first town hall meeting Telecom call covers protestors, immigration issues

Karen Handel held her first town hall meeting Wednesday, Aug. 30 over the phone to address issues facing Georgia’s 6th Congressional District. Between 400-1,000 people were connected to the call at any given time, according to organizers.

Handel gave an update on her work since being sworn in and answered over 20 screened questions during the hour-long meeting. At least another

20 questions went unanswered due to time constraints, District Director Ashely Jenkins said. Handel will reach out to those individuals and answer their questions over the next few days, she added.

HANDEL Communication with constituents in general was emphasized multiple times during the call.

Handel said that she will be launching several new outreach initiatives, including more telecom and physical town hall meetings. She also envisioned “Coffee with Karen” meetings for weekend availability.

Several of the questions focused on

national events. One of the first questions sought her reaction to the rallies at Charlottesville, which took the life of one counter-protestor.

“Charlottesville was a terrible, horrible day,” Handel said. “Out of the tragedy and evil of that day came an opportunity for America and Americans to reaffirm that we reject bigotry, racism and antisemitism without equivocation.”

She added that leaders of their communities need to stand firm against such ideologies and “violence in promoting a point of view.”

When asked about antifa protestors, who resist white supremacist, neo-Nazi and fascist groups, Handel said they are “a hate group just like the Ku Klux Klan.”

She likewise condemned “rogue cities” who have sanctuary policies for people who are staying in the nation illegally as well as birthright citizenship and amnesty. She added that immigration in general was a big issue for her and that she wanted to devote more resources for ICE to help get the current situation under control.

Local law enforcement also needs more support, she added. Atlanta especially has a human trafficking problem and police need more resources to help combat it, she said.

Some callers were concerned about how close her race against Jon Ossoff had gotten and wanted to know how she would work to represent all of her constituents, not just those who had supported her during the election.

Handel, who has previously emphasized that she is the first conservative woman representative from Georgia, responded that she doesn’t like labels.

“I try to look at people in the district as citizens of the district,” she said. “We need a whole lot less name calling and labeling and a whole lot more problem solving.”

She echoed that message when she said she would not support a government shutdown if there wasn’t enough money to build a border wall with Mexico. It’s not a constructive scenario, Handel said.

Since Handel couldn’t get to every question in one hour, she vowed to answer the remaining questions individually over the next few days.

Rep. Collins talks healthcare, Lake Lanier, mental health

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — U.S. Rep. Doug Collins, who represents parts of Forsyth County and Gainesville, stopped by the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce International Engagement breakfast Aug. 30 to talk about local and national issues.

“The international footprint here in Forsyth County is great,” Collins said.

“It shows others they can come in and it’s diverse here. Georgia has a great climate for international business.”

One of the most talked about issues across the nation is healthcare, Collins said.

“My hope is healthcare isn’t dead,” Collins said. “The bottom line is what happened in the Senate a few weeks ago, when it didn’t vote on the last measure to send it to Congress, did not kill the bill. It just killed the process.”

Most people thought the process had to start over, but Collins said it wasn’t moving forward at that point in time.

“It didn’t fix the problem,” Collins said. “I defended it all summer at town halls and was not the most popular person in the room by any count. For people wanting to keep the current system, my question back was always, ‘what do you want to keep in healthcare that’s already there?’”

There are four providers in the state of Georgia currently, but almost 90 percent of the state’s counties are represented by one provider, which often is not accepted by doctors, he said.

“At the end of the day, you don’t have an insurance plan and you’re still having the same problems we’ve

developed over time,” Collins said. “It’s a system that’s going in on itself.”

For the future, Collins said they’re still pushing for a system that will provide relief.

On a more local level, Collins addressed issues with Lake Lanier.

“What matters to me is the northeast Georgia area including Lake Lanier,” Collins said. “We made a commitment to engage the Army Corps of Engineers. Without any public input, they decided they’d ban irrigation. We went to them, confronted them and we won. The [Army Corps] general actually called me saying they were removing it.”

Collins also said he’s heard plenty about the antiquated system the Corps uses for dock permitting. He said some people have been fired because of the procedure.

“I’ve advocated for firings,” he said.

“There needs to be more because it’s ridiculous what’s happening. We’re working with the homeowners and get people calling us all the time. We’re able to get this process going.”

Mental health in the county was another issue brought up. Collins said a piece of legislation has passed on the Criminal Health and Mental Justice Act. “One of the issues is how do you know if you’re coming up on somebody who’s just belligerent toward the police and want to react, or are they dealing with a mental or substance abuse issue?” Collins said. “Our bill gives more money so we can begin the process of letting officials and officers be able to identify that.”

He also said they are working on issues related to jails such as many

“We have to stop treating our jails like mental health facilities,” Collins said. “This has to stop. Because of some of the cutbacks on institutionalization and community based programs, we’ve had to think about how we’re putting folks in jail where they aren’t getting their medication.”

Drug problems are often associated with the inner city, low-income areas or gangs, he said, but in Forsyth County

and surrounding communities, the people who are overdosing break those stereotypes.

“I’ve toured almost every jail in my district,” Collins said. “Most people think of people in jail who did something wrong and that’s true. But when you have 35 to 45 percent of your local prison population with either an addiction or mental health condition, this is a money and moral issue. We’re spending too much money to keep them in jail and a moral issue because these folks need their medicine.”

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Jim Cregge never set out to be Milton’s Parks and Recreation director, but he was being primed for the role without knowing it.

After coaching his three children in youth sports, creating an umpiring program and serving in multiple capacities for local park organizations, Cregge eventually fell into his role with Milton.

Cregge worked over 30 years in the electronics industry, mostly in the field of security technology.

When his three children became involved in youth sports at Bell Memorial Park, Cregge began coaching and scheduling games. That role evolved into Cregge serving as the Hopewell Youth Association president and being appointed to Alpharetta’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Meanwhile, Cregge founded a mentorship program that is now in its 22nd year.

While coaching at Bell Memorial, Cregge was made aware that there was no association that could provide umpires for coach-pitch baseball and softball.

He recruited teenagers from local neighborhoods, paying them out of his own pocket while they were taught to umpire. While the program is aimed at teaching the rules associated with umpiring, Cregge said it also an avenue to instill life skills.

“It’s called a youth umpire program, but I prefer to call it employment 101,” he said.

Cregge said the program instructs teenagers on decision-making, how to

work as a teammate, applying for jobs and conflict resolution.

“We are trying to get these young people further ahead of their peers,” Cregge said. “The program itself is challenging. We make the kids work to get in.”

Cregge believes his mentorship program was crucial in his appointment as department director. It showed that he was in it for the long haul.

Cregge began his current role in 2012 and said he is “blessed” to have the opportunity.

“The saying is that it takes a village to raise a child and this village helped me to raise mine,” he said. “It is an honor to serve this community and to be able to give back to the many people who have helped me and supported me over the years. I tell people all the time that I think I have the greatest job in the world.”

As director, Cregge creates programming and schedules facilities for Milton’s parks and youth athletics and ensures that participants’ needs are being met.

He also states the importance of public input for the Parks and Recreation Department.

“We want to encourage the people of Milton to get out and use the broad range of facilities we already have while we ask for their help figuring out what do they want next,” he said.

Cregge’s role as a youth coach has continued during his time with the city, and he is now coaching his 65th youth team. He and his wife, Kathleen, will celebrate their 33rd wedding anniversary this year and are adjusting to an empty-nester lifestyle, he said.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – For as long as Alpharetta has been a city, the flock associated with St. James United Methodist Church has been spreading the word in the community.

Founded by former slaves in 1867 as the Alpharetta Colored Methodist Church, the congregation is celebrating its 150th anniversary this week with an array of church and community events.

St. James is the largest predominantly African-American church in the area, and its numbers continue to grow, said Senior Pastor the Rev. Dr. Michael T. McQueen.

The church has undergone numerous iterations over its long history.

Its first location was at 109 Cumming St., but as its membership grew and different divisions within the Methodist Church merged, the local Colored Methodists formed to build a new facility on Kimball Bridge Road in 1968.

That location served the congregation for close to 40 years until the current church, located on Webb Bridge Road, was constructed.

Today, St. James UMC boasts a membership of close to 3,700, and McQueen said plans are in the works to expand the facility with a new sanctuary.

But numbers alone have not defined the church, McQueen said. The congregation is noted equally for its community involvement and message of inclusion for all races and beliefs.

“We model ourselves after what the kingdom of God looks like,” McQueen said. “I believe heaven will model that same diversity.”

That diversity was on display a year ago when St. James sought to quell tensions after a series of police-involved shootings across the country left the African-American community reeling. The church hosted its second Community Reconciliation and Hope Service, drawing a crowd of close to 200 people of all nationalities and walks of life.

The meeting featured dialog between members of the community and local police, corrections and city leaders.

That diversity is on display each November when St. James hosts its annual Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service, inviting people of all faiths to join in worship. It is on display each January

At an Aug.28 City Council ceremony recognizing the church’s contribution to the community, Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle presented the pastor with a proclamation honoring the long history and accomplishments the congregation has made to spread the word of inclusion into the fabric of the city.

Reflecting on that ceremony, McQueen said he is pleased with the relationship the church has with the city and its Public Safety Department.

“I feel the church plays a critical role in the success of Alpharetta to exemplify the best of what Alpharetta can be in regard to inclusiveness,” he said.

Milton’s offensive line forming cohesive unit Senior-laden front 5 bring size, experience

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Offensive linemen are the unsung heroes of football. They won’t make the Friday night highlight reels. They won’t load up the stat sheet.

And, as Milton head coach Adam Clack put it, they get recognized most often when they aren’t performing well.

Considering every offensive play the line is working hip-to-hip in the trenches with little acknowledgement, cohesion is vital.

In the early goings of the 2017 season, Milton’s front five is becoming such a unit.

“Every offensive line I’ve been a part of has been the closest unit on the team,” offensive line coach Steven Stromie said. “And our guys do everything together,” he said.

From group dinners at Waffle House, working out together, practicing together and working side by side each day, the group of four seniors and one sophomore have created a close-knit unit.

“And then they go back to Waffle House,” offensive line coach Jayce Ratliff quipped.

From all those workouts and waffles, the line is also packed with size, with all five starters over 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds.

Seniors Nate Thompson, Blake Watson and Austin Paden have also taken a leadership role on the line, having played together last season. They have

The only non-senior on the line, Tchio, said his fellow lineman have been helpful in his transition to Milton’s varsity squad.

“At one point, [Paden] was telling me what to do every play,” he said. “I love them.”

Tchio said as the season has progressed, the front five have become even closer, a sentiment shared by Thompson and Watson.

“We’re a real tight-knit unit,” Watson said.

The returning starters have learned a new offensive scheme under Clack and Stromie, both in their first year at the school.

Clack said before the season that his team’s offensive success would be dictated by the offensive line, and he is pleased with the progress.

The new scheme calls for zone blocking, much of it done on the fly in response to defenders.

“It requires lots of coordination and chemistry, so [the O-line] playing together is vital to our offense.”
