I love the month of September
eptember is one of my favorite months. The weather sometimes starts to get cooler, which means deck season is right around the corner. That, of course, means fire pits and red wine are close by, too. September also means football season is kicking off, so my jeans and fall gear are on stand by. And finally there is something to watch on television! No more ridiculous game shows and tired re-runs of “The Middle” or “Big Bang Theory”. But most of all I love September because it's BIRTHDAY MONTH! Lots of great people have birthdays in September -- Prince Harry, Hugh Grant, Queen Elizabeth I, Olivia Newton-John, Serena Williams, A.J. McNaughton to name a
few-- and ME! Yes, my birthday falls in the beginning of September, usually around Labor Day, so that means a long-weekend celebration is in order. But for the past 16 years my birthday has become extra special since my son Macnair was born on the same day. That was the Best birthday gift ever:) On this special day we have tried to capture the moment with a photo, but as the years progress and life gets busier it seems to get harder and harder. My hope is as we both grow older we still can take time to at least share cake together. Happy September everyone! Hope it’s a great one. ■

or almost 70 years, the Roswell Woman’s Club has served North Fulton through educational scholarships and grants, human services, cultural arts, historical preservation and urban improvement. The club’s current President Cheryl O’Donnell joined in 2005 and set a personal goal to make a positive and personal difference in the community. “I had two young daughters at that time and I wanted to set a good example of what it means to be a compassionate volunteer,” O’Donnell said. “An unexpected benefit was the wonderful friends I made along the way, both in the club and within the organizations supported by Roswell Woman’s Club. That’s truly my greatest gift.” The nonprofit service organization works to benefit the communities in which they live and work in the greater North Fulton areas, she said. The 200 members accomplish this through hands-on involvement, volunteerism in the community and monetary contributions through fundraising. Of those members, 104 have been with the club for more than 10 years. One member, Helen Owens, has been with the club for 52 years. First Vice President Laura Jones said she joined the club to give to the community she is proud to live in. But she said what she received is far greater than she could ever hope to give. “My joy is in witnessing North Fulton’s growth into a community that all residents can proudly call home, an opportunity to make life-long friends and participate in the growth and preservation of our North Fulton community,” Jones said. “I have received far greater than I can ever repay. I’m grateful to be a member of Roswell Woman’s Club.” The group supports and is involved in various projects, with its community service committee one of the largest in the club. Projects include decorating Bulloch Hall, volunteering for Foster Care Support Foundation’s Prom-a-Palooza, as well as working with the Drake House, Groveway Community, Homestretch and North Fulton Community Charities. The club has remained a non-federated organization, desiring to remain completely independent in their decisions to support local students, schools and charities, O’Donnell said. “Since 1977, the Roswell Woman’s Club has disbursed over $2,100,000,” O’Donnell said. “Each year, deserving local area high school seniors receive college scholarships, and local education and nonprofit organizations receive

grants. Annual disbursements from our fundraising efforts are given back to the community during a formal Gift Disbursement Ceremony, typically held in May.” An annual fundraising event provides funds for the club’s monetary distribution to the community, she said. In the past, a Showcase Home Tour was the signature event. Most recently, the club has ventured into new territory with the 2013 “Rockin’ Roswell CHAIRity Event” and the 2015 and 2016 Mardi Gras Balls. This year, Marty Johnson, third vice president, announced the inaugural Holiday Home Tour Nov. 4, featuring five homes in the heart of historic Roswell, showcased and adorned with holiday decor by local floral and home interior designers. Sponsorship opportunities are new this year, and Johnson expects online tickets to sell out quickly. “I was initially attracted to the club because of its wonderful reputation and rich legacy of serving North Fulton,” Johnson said. “Not only does the club provide time, talent and resources, the club is full of ladies with giving hearts. These women are givers in every sense of the word.” Visit roswellwomansclub.org for more information. ■

Networking in a new way
women in business

Flourish connects working women through friendship first By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
L
inda Barbour realizes now that her “downsizing” from a job she held for nearly 25 years turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Without the redirection in 2009, she may never have found her true calling —helping women thrive professionally and personally. In 2015, Barbour founded Flourish, a networking group for women based in Acworth, with multiple chapters in three states and others on the way. The focus of Flourish, Barbour said, is to connect, inspire and impact women in a way that supports them individually and in business. The atmosphere is about personal growth, not competition, aggression, sales tactics and other aspects that are often a part of the networking experience. “The idea for Flourish came to me in early 2015 out of my frustration with [traditional] networking groups,” said Barbour, who moved to the Atlanta area in 2009. “I found the women to sometimes be [indifferent], and I was looking for a group that was focused on helping and supporting other women.” At the time, Robinson was working for a marketing company after a long career in the telecommunications field. When she couldn’t find the networking niche she wanted, she created her own. “At the very beginning it started with two of us meeting at a local restaurant,” Barbour said laughing of the organization’s humble start. “It was simply about us connecting, helping each other, and becoming friends.” She soon invited more women to her home in Acworth, reaching out through social media and other platforms, to draw in working women who also sought a more personal style of networking. The idea resonated, and soon other chapters sprang up around the metro area, initiated by “leaders” who took on the role and responsibility for their chapters. Today, there are 18 Flourish chapters in Georgia, primarily clustered around the Atlanta metro area from Cartersville to Canton to Buckhead, including three chapters in North Fulton. Flourish has spread to Tennessee and Florida, and Barbour‘s goal is to eventually see chapters across the country and the world. Barbour is not surprised by the growth of Flourish; she said the structure resonates with many women in the work force. “Before Flourish, I saw a lot of groups with cliques and [special]

interests, and often a shallowness,” Barbour said. “I wanted to put a group together where we all get to know each other first, develop friendships and then [focus] on business.” She has no set goals on how and where Flourish chapters will evolve, preferring the organization to grow organically through the work of committed leaders. Other than a code of ethics that each leader must follow, Barbour encourages each chapter to evolve its own personality. “We have one chapter where the leader was a school teacher, so she prefers to run it by the book like a classroom,” Barbour laughed. “If you come to my meetings [in Acworth] you’ll probably find a featured guest and we just go with the flow.” Flourish draws a wide spectrum of working women, Barbour said, from corporate executives to stay at home moms with home businesses. To date, about 1,800 women have participated in Flourish events. In addition to the monthly chapter meetups, the Flourish calendar includes conferences, ladies mixers, girls’ night out and social networking events. Barbour said they often partner with businesses for special events, such as health and wellness seminars, to inspire the “spiritual side” of personal growth. It’s a far cry from traditional networking focused on business card exchanges and gathering names of potential customers, but Barbour says that is intentional. “The best way to describe Flourish is ‘our purpose is to be different on purpose,’” she noted. “We build relationships.” For more information on Flourish, visit http://www. comeflourishwithus.com ■

nne Cicconi first discovered Flourish on Facebook and was drawn to the approach which focuses on relationships first, and work
second. “I found the women who attend Flourish meetings to have exceptional hearts ... and [that] is important to me,” said Cicconi, a native of New York who moved to the Atlanta area in 1991. “I look forward to connecting with them on a monthly basis and nurturing solid relationships.” A designer and renovator who owns her own business, Cicconi attended several chapter meetings Anne Cicconi. before approaching founder Linda Barbour about starting her own chapter. “I asked Linda is there was a chapter in Johns Creek and she said ‘no, how about if you start one?’” Cicconi laughed. “So I did!” She has a business marketing degree from Kean University and an interior design degree from Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, and spent years in the furniture business. “I have been in design my entire career,” Cicconi said. “I started my own company two years ago – finally fulfilling a lifelong dream of being in charge of my own destiny.” She believes it is in the nature of most women to want to help other women, but they often don’t know the best approach. “Women are great at relationships, and if we are given the right forum, with guidance, we can join together and achieve great things,” Cicconi said. “I think more opportunities, more outside the box thinking, etc., would facilitate more participation.” That’s where Flourish comes in, she added, providing the opportunities to grow your own business, while at the same time helping others grow theirs. “I [encourage women] to get rid of your fear and preconception and join a Flourish group!” Cicconi urged. “It is only through reaching out to others that we can be helped.” ■

fter a long career in education, Lisa Petersen transitioned to a new profession a few years ago, taking on a new role as a real estate agent with her own agency. “My career change into real estate was exciting and daunting at the same time,” said Petersen, who works for Palmer House Properties. “Being an agent is so much more than just showing pretty houses and negotiating contracts.” She knew success in the ultra-competitive real estate industry required strong business skills and decisionmaking abilities – along with lots of advice from others Lisa Petersen. in the field. Petersen was directed to Flourish through a business contact and jumped at the chance to become a chapter leader in Milton/Alpharetta in January. “I thought what an excellent opportunity to lead a group of like-minded business women! It was exactly the type of networking group I was looking for,” said Petersen, who lives in Canton. Flourish fits her needs for a number of reasons. It provides members flexibility on attendance at chapter meetings, and it focuses on relationship building as a core value. “Being women only, Flourish is also much less intimidating for some,” said Petersen, who majored in communications and special education in college. “Here, we are able to let our guard down more and get to know each other on a personal level.” Professionally, she noted Flourish has expanded her network of potential clients, both directly and indirectly, and she in turn has helped others build their own businesses. “More than that, though, I learn a lot from these ladies on what works for them in their businesses and what doesn’t,” Petersen said. “It’s a chance to share ideas, empathize, and celebrate. Personally, I consider my Flourish meeting my ‘Girls Night Out’ [with] some great laughs!” She said gender inequality still exists in the workplace, so it’s important that women support and mentor each other. Networking with other women helps build that support. “Any woman who relies on referrals for her business should join a networking group,” Petersen advised. “It never hurts to expand your circle and gain a new idea or a new friend.” ■

Suburban Mom in Jeans owner
previews, discusses fall trends Jill Myrick talks about business, lifestyle, inspiration By LORI WYNNE Style Contributor
I
began this company a few years ago with my youngest in diapers. My plan was always to do this part time and learn as much as I could by the time she entered kindergarten. My five-year plan was to pursue this more full time once she was in school. That is now. I am focusing on proactively growing the business this year with new retail partners, Mart visits, etc. I have so many things planned, including trips to Chicago for fabric sourcing, Miami for the 2018 Swim Show and Nashville to work on new beach wear designs, including the cutest resort pants EVER, new shorts and new cover-up designs. Of course, we'll be on the beach every chance we get, too. We have some SMIJ signs in Mercantile in Seaside, Fla., and we love an excuse to go visit 30a and Mercantile.
Are your products made locally? Yes, and that is a core business value for us. Our tags say "Made in the South". The cover-ups are designed here in Milton and sewn in Nashville. Jill Myrick, owner of SM
The tees are also designed in Milton, and they are sourced locally and then printed by my dad who I pulled out of retirement. He prints my tees in between rounds of golf and tennis matches. He has been in the T-shirt printing business for 20+ years on the side of his "real job."
IJ.
Do you create custom products? We work with booster organizations and schools to create custom SMIJ tees to be sold exclusively through their events — orientations, games, spirit wear, etc. We currently have a very popular one selling fast at Cambridge High School. I also work with my retail partners to create custom designs for their stores — ZIP Code tees, high school color tees, college game day tees and our popular St. Patty's Day tees, etc.
What is your favorite trend for fall? As a self-proclaimed "suburban mom in jeans," I tend to follow the trends in denim and casual styles. This fall season I'm looking forward to all the cropped denim with released, boot-cut and staggered hems. These are designed to show off the fall shoes, and I'm a big fan of anything that loves shoes as much as I do. I'm also loving the variety of sleeve styles this fall. Basically, anything BUT a basic sleeve goes this year. Then, bringing me right back to high school is the luxe, but casual look of the velvet-look this fall. It's showing up in T-shirts and other casual pieces. Sneakers continue to be "in," and my personal collection is definitely growing. Love how comfortable yet stylish this fall is shaping up!

checkitout! What product is your biggest seller right now? Fall is a big tee season for SMIJ year after year. We sell them through our retail partners. Henry & Pearl in Milton has been everyone's go-to for SMIJ tees and I appreciate their partnership so much. Our high school colors, college colors and Game Day tees are always anticipated and big sellers. We love H&P customers! We have new "Tailgate Y'all" tees coming out which I predict will go fast. Also, I'm working with a local company and friend from my church, Alpharetta UMC, to make SMIJ Game Day hats for the first time ever. Both should be available by September. By the time this article comes out our "Tailgate Y'all" tee will be in the store, and I'm so excited for that one! Of course, we are always planning for the next beach season for our cover-ups. Thanks to the school breaks built into the calendar year round,cover-ups are always in season. Personally, I'll be on the beach October and December, at least!
Please share anything else you would like our readers to know about you, your website or products. I love to write the blog. It's my way to share my love for fashion and style with those who love it like I do. I also love my local area and the U.S.A. I love to share experiences with our city, trips beyond our area and local small businesses. I am fortunate to have SMIJ in 12+ local stores (listed under "Locations" on my website). In the North Fulton area, we are in Henry & Pearl (30004) in Milton, All Inspired (30022) in Johns Creek and Serendipity (30075) in Roswell. They all carry ZIP Code tees for their area. Henry & Pearl is the first store to give me a chance and I'll NEVER forget that. I love to work with them! It's a great local store with the best team. The best way to stay up to date with SMIJ is to follow us on Instagram (smijbyjill). â–

SUMMER READING FROM OUR INTERNS By JULIA SANDERS
M
‘Gone Girl’ keeps its readers guessing until the end (Released 2014)
arriage can be difficult for everyone, especially when both husband and wife go into the relationship expecting different things, and when neither communicate what they want. It is easy for a person to get wrapped up in their expectations for marriage. Gillian Flynn’s “Gone Girl” is a thriller that sheds light on the tensions in a modern marriage, but the book is not a “happily ever after” romance. Instead, it is a thriller full of deception, lies and suspense that keeps the readers guessing all throughout the book. The suspense and thrill in “Gone Girl” would make anyone’s skin crawl. The book comes with unexpected events, unpredictable main characters and an even more shocking ending. The book starts off innocent enough, despite the fact that the husband describes his wife’s head shape with extreme detail. His wife, Amy, is famous, not for what she did in real-life, but for her book persona, “Amazing Amy,” a book series about Amy that her parents wrote when she was growing up. Throughout the whole book, the reader gets to read Amy’s diary entries, which she wrote diligently for five years. Amy’s diary portrays her as a sweet, innocent wife who has a husband that has anger management issues and seems to be pulling away from her. Amy writes in her diary that her husband did not want
kids. Their marriage was not a happy one, full of secrets and lies. At one point, Amy writes in her diary that she fears for her life, and she is afraid that her husband might kill her. Then, on their fifth wedding anniversary, Amy disappears. Police later find blood on the floor of the kitchen that has been cleaned up, which leaves police wondering if Amy was murdered. Readers will not be able to put this book down until the end because they will want to know where the “gone girl” went Gillian Flynn has written many other novels, such as “Dark Places” and “Sharp Objects,” both of which are thrillers. However, out of all Gillian Flynn’s books, “Gone Girl” is the most popular. It made it on the New York Times Bestseller list for over 130 weeks. Gillian Flynn has won many awards for her book, including International Author of the Year in 2013, and Entertainment Weekly’s Entertainer of the Year in 2012. “Gone Girl’ starred in Publisher’s Weekly, Booklist, Kirkus and Library Journal reviews. The book was later made into a movie, which was released in theaters in October 2014 and nominated for four Golden Globes. ■

Give Your Hardwood Floors A Face Lift Do you want to restore your aging floors but you aren’t ready for a complete refinish? Then RESURFACING may be the solution! This system is set by doing a deep cleaning, lightly sanding down the surface, then applying a new coat of finish of your choice. This process is done usually in one day and the cost is considerably lower than a full refinish. But if you simply want to get a full renovation, completely repair damaged/scratched floors or even change the color stain, REFINISHING is the best option. Both choices are done with our dust containment system equipment to ensure creating a minimal amount of dust while floors are being processed. Give us a call to perform a free assessment.

R
eaders looking for a pleasant, captivating romance to dive into while relaxing at the beach or pool this summer should look no further than Julie James’ ninth novel, The Thing About Love. James immerses readers in the world of FBI agents Jessica Harlow and John Shepherd, former rivals at the FBI Academy. The agents cross paths when Jessica, still reeling from a recent divorce, moves back to her hometown of Chicago to work in the city’s field office. As fate would have it, Jessica and John are placed on an undercover case together, and the two must get over their past animosity to work to take down a corrupt mayor. Annoyance turns into friendship, and soon, the agents find themselves tangled up in a love affair. The Thing About Love gets off to an immersive start, and it was a fast and fun read. The back story of Jessica and John’s adversarial relationship at Quantico was entertaining, especially because readers got the story from both agent’s points of view, which conflicted outrageously at many points. The novel is part of James’ series of books known as her “FBI/US Attorney” series. As a former lawyer, James writes knowledgeably in all her books about the law and crime, and her attention to detail adds realism to the story. Readers not only are treated to a satisfying romantic plot
but also a thorough description of the inner workings of the FBI. Due to James’ attentiveness, the preparations Jessica and John needed to make for their undercover case were intriguing. The agents pieced together new identities from scratch, using creativity and experience. The importance of family is a theme sprinkled in among the romance and action. Jessica is supported by a large family, including two headstrong siblings that bicker tirelessly but are always there for Jessica. John became close with his father and brother after his mother’s death, and his family enjoys dinner together every Sunday. These supporting characters give the story much of its wit and heart. Jessica and John have a lot of wit themselves, constantly bantering and having fun. James first establishes a friendship between the two characters, so once their relationship turns romantic, their connection and passion for each other is realistic and convincing. My favorite aspect of the novel is Jessica’s confidence and ability to fight for herself in a profession dominated by men. Jessica is a strong, complex female protagonist, focused on her career but open to love at the same time. Although James keeps readers in suspense until almost the last page, The Thing About Love has a satisfying ending that perfectly wraps up Jessica and John’s story. ■

through fall
Fall looks fantastic from the seat of a bicycle. These seven great bike trails have something for riders of all levels. By STEVE HUDSON
Outside Georgia Contributor
F
all is coming – I promise it is — and once the weather starts to cool it’s hard to beat a day of bike riding with your family. But where should you go? There are literally dozens of great rides on Atlanta’s north side, but here are seven of my favorites. No matter what your skill level, there’s a perfect ride here for you!
Big Creek Greenway (Forsyth County)
We’ve got a real treasure in the Big Creek Greenway. The Forsyth County section extends from McFarland Parkway north to Bethelview Road, with three official parking areas – off Bethelview Road north of Castleberry Road, at Fowler Park (off Ga. 9 north of Post Road), off McFarland Parkway east of Ga. 400, and off Union Hill Road. Currently, this section offers 9.6 miles of wide, smooth trail. It’s truly a great place for a family ride. Info: bigcreekgreenway.com
Big Creek Greenway (Fulton County)
The Fulton County section of the Greenway offers an additional 8 or so miles of great family-friendly riding. The portion in Fulton extends from Marconi Drive to just south of Mansell Road. Official parking is available across from North Point Mall and also off Haynes Bridge Road, Kimball Bridge Road at Rock Mill Park, Preston Ridge Road near the YMCA and Marconi Drive south of Windward Parkway. Official parking for the Roswell segment is at Big Creek Park. For a bit more adventure, check out the dirt mountain bike trail area about 0.4 miles south of Webb Bridge Road. I Info: bigcreekgreenway.com
Blankets Creek
Looking for off-road biking excitement? Then thank

the Southern Off Road Bicycle Association of Woodstock for the world-class mountain bike trails at Blankets Creek. This great riding location is about 1.8 miles west of I-575 off Sixes Road (exit 11). From the Mosquito Flats trail (great for beginners and families) to other trails rated intermediate, advanced and expert, it truly has something for every rider. Remember your helmet! Info: sorbawoodstock.org
Cochran Shoals Loop Trail
The Cochran Shoals Fitness Loop is a level, graveled 2 -mile loop trail in the Cochran Shoals Unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. It’s perfect for families! It’s accessible from the south via a half-mile connector trail from the parking area off Interstate North Parkway, or directly from the north from the parking area at the end of Columns Drive. One leg of the loop (as well as the approach trail from the Interstate North parking area) closely parallels the Chattahoochee; the other leg follows the toe of a ridge. By the way, if you’re inclined to serious off-road mountain biking adventure, check out the mountain bike trail in the adjoining Sope Creek Unit of CRNRA. A daily parking fee is required at CRNRA sites. Info: nps.gov/chat/planyourvisit.
Noonday Creek Greenway (Cobb County)
With a length of about 7 miles, the Noonday Creek Trail in Cobb County extends from Bells Ferry Road to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Access is at the Bells Ferry trailhead (3001 Bells Ferry Road) which offers limited parking, at Town Center Mall, and at Kennesaw Mountain. Bike rental is available at several spots on this trail. Part of the trail is a “side path,” which means that it parallels a road. Info: cobbtrailplan.com
Noonday Creek Greenway (Woodstock)
Here’s another Noonday Creek bike trail, this one a short 1.5-mile trail connecting Ga. 92 with Woodstock. Access to the middle of the trail via the Woofstock Dog Park (150 Dupree Road). The northern end of the trail is at the intersection of Elm Street and Market Street in Woodstock. There’s no trail parking at the Ga. 92 (south) end of the trail. This trail is mostly level once you’re south of the dog park. Speaking of which, don’t miss crossing the bridge that carries you from the trail over the creek to Woofstock. And if your four-legged friend is tagging along, make a stop at the dog park too. You’ll be a hero! Info: woodstockga.gov/800/Trail-System
Olde Rope Mill Park bike trails
Here’s another SORBA mountain bike experience -the Taylor Randahl Memorial Bike Trails at Olde Rope Mill Park, just off I-575 at Exit 9 (Ridgewalk Parkway) at the far end of Rope Mill Road. This network of three trails offers no fewer than 10 different loops with names like Raceway, Powerhouse and Turbine. Non-bikers in your group will enjoy hiking these trails while you ride…but remember that bikes have the right-of-way. Don’t forget your helmet! Info: sorbawoodstock.org ■

Do I need pet insurance to cover my vet bills? By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
W
hile pet insurance has been around for more than a century in some countries, the idea of insuring one’s pet in the United State is a relatively new concept. The first pet insurance policy was offered in the early 1980s in the U.S., and still fewer than 2 percent of American pet owners have taken out policies. Compare that to Sweden, where 60 percent of pets carry insurance, and in the United Kingdom where nearly four in 10 pets are insured. But with pet ownership at an all-time high in the U.S., the amount spent on vet bills is also skyrocketing. Last year, Americans spent nearly $16 billion on veterinary bills, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA). There are multiple companies offering pet health insurance policies. Even traditional “people” insurance companies, notably Nationwide Insurance, is now offering pet insurance. One of the emerging trends in the business world is offering pet insurance as a benefit for employees. Premiums are based on a number of factors, including age, breed, pre-existing conditions, genetics, comprehensive, accidents and emergencies only, etc., and can vary in price widely. According to a recent Consumer Reports analysis, premiums averaged about $500 for dogs and $300 for cats annually. But regardless of whether pet insurance is right for you, responsible pet owners should have a means of funding unforeseen circumstances if they arise, advised Dr. Jeff Werber, a practicing veterinarian in Los Angeles and one of the few veterinary medical journalists in the U.S. “It is definitely essential to have something for that rainy day…whether it’s insurance [through a third party] or something I call self-insurance,” Werber explained. Self-insurance takes away the “lose it if you don’t use it,” approach to traditional insurance. Start by setting up a separate account for your pet and making monthly deposits, similar to insurance premiums, for the sole purpose of your pet’s needs. “The goal is you have to be disciplined in making those monthly payments,” said Dr. Werber. “You will be building up resources [for an emergency], and if you don’t ever have to use it, you get to keep it.” Either way, your available budget may dictate the level of care and services your pets receive. With insurance, an owner may be able to go beyond what a self-pay person is willing to do, said Dr. Werber. The goal for all pet owners, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is to limit future medical expenses by keeping your pet as healthy as possible. Those steps include asking your vet which vaccines you can skip, guarding against parasites by mitigating for ticks, fleas and heartworm, and making sure your pet is spayed or neutered. ■

Roswell Spotlight Artist shares lighthearted works By JULIA GROCHOWSKI
julia@appenmediagroup.com
O
ne local artist’s mission is simple: to bring a little more joy to everyone’s lives. “I don’t try to necessarily change the world with every piece,” artist and Roswell native Heather Lund said. “It’s not below me to only draw puppies wearing hats… I just love to make people laugh or smile.” Throughout the summer, Lund has been the Spotlight Artist at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, where her artwork has graced the entrance room of the theater. Her lighthearted pieces will still be available to view through August, and Lund herself will be present during a closing reception Aug. 6 featuring live music by Will Moore. Most of the pieces have humorous undertones and feature animals. She is also frequently inspired by some of her favorite media, including “Game of Thrones,” “Steven Universe” and Wes Anderson movies. Lund does not constrain herself with one type of media but explores a variety of paths. “It really depends on the day,” she said. “Which is kind of weird for an illustrator. A lot of illustrators tend to reel it in and keep it really specific to their style.” Her preferred media is watercolor, pen and ink. But she also dabbles in everything from acrylics to collages and frequently uses digital programs for her illustrations. Most the artwork at the gallery is screen-print or watercolor. But her main goal is to “bring happiness” with each work and to keep creating art. “Art is just a part of me at this point — to create is an outlet for me,” Lund said. “I always end up coming back to expressing myself through art just because it’s just so satisfying to me. Being able to do a craft with your hands and have a physical product afterwards is just something I love.” Lund’s passion for art has been lifelong and began as early as 5. She said she became “obsessed” with the craft after watching artist Bob Ross on TV teaching viewers how to paint nature scenes. Her parents were supportive and helped nurture Lund’s talents, which eventually helped her earn a bachelor’s degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design. She is now the only one in her family with an art background. Lund did not go immediately into an art career

after graduation, and instead ended up as an admissions counselor at SCAD’s Atlanta campus. But she didn’t let that road bump stop her. As a perk, Lund’s position at the college allowed her to take one free class per semester, which she fully took advantage of. It eventually led to her earning a master’s degree in illustration. She has since been working for a marketing company, whose clients include Universal Studios, The Coca-Cola Company and Paula Dean. “I’m lucky enough to have made my love of art into a career,” Lund said. In her free time, she also teaches classes at The Art Place, a community arts center in Marietta. Her one piece of advice for budding artists is to always keep working at it. “Always draw and always keep a sketchbook,” Lund said. “It doesn’t matter if everything in the sketchbook is terrible. With practice, you’ll just keep getting better and better.” Lund frequently visits local art shows, like the annual Indie Craft Experience in Atlanta, to share her works. She also has an Etsy shop. E
dward Bailey is not only the executive director of No Longer Bound, he is also a former client, and one of hundreds of success stories. Founded in 1991 in Cumming, NLB is a faith-based, 12-month residential program for adult men with drug and alcohol addiction. The program is effective: approximately 70 percent of men will leave NLB free of their addiction and ready for a second chance at life. NLB is primarily self-sustaining through revenue earned
from four industries: NLB Furniture – custom farmhouse furniture and other home décor; NLB Studios – full service print, graphics and web design studio; NLB Thrift – two upscale thrift stores in Cumming and Woodstock; and NLB Cars4Recovery – accepting donations of all types of vehicles for resale. The remainder of the operational budget is raised through fundraising. For more info, please visit: www.nolongerbound.com
How did your involvement with No Longer Bound begin?
Edward Bailey, wife Jennifer, and daughters Falyn and Farrah.
I was homeschooled and came from a twoparent, loving Christian home. A restless, reckless and rebellious spirit led me to experiment with drugs and alcohol. Before I knew it, I had a full-blown addiction to meth. Thankfully, my family found help for me at No Longer Bound, which I believe saved my life. I entered the program on July 21, 2004, ultimately finding hope and healing, which transformed into a mission and a call for me to help save those impacted by addiction.
great churches and non-profits that do incredible good throughout our area. There are also outstanding schools, which has moved to the top of my list because I have two young daughters and a lovely wife, Jennifer, who works as an assistant principle. They are my heart and my world. I’ve found a true sense of community in Cumming…and I couldn’t imagine living any other place.
You remained in the area after your treatment ended. What keeps you here?
The mission of NLB remains the same: rescuing addicts, regenerating men and reconciling families. What has changed is the deadliness of the drugs that we are now dealing with. Heroin and synthetic opioids have changed the trajectory of
I’ve chosen to remain here for many reasons… we have an amazing philanthropic community in metro Atlanta, a growing and vibrant economy,

addiction because it has become so deadly for those using these drugs. Every day, 142 people die in the U.S. from opioid overdoses. This equates to a loss of life equal to the 9/11 attacks every three weeks. We, as a country, have to do something. At NLB, we are now operating with more of a sense of urgency — people simply aren’t getting second, third or fourth chances anymore. People are dying from addiction at pandemic levels. It’s really so tragic and what keeps me up at night.
What does NLB need to be successful?
As a staff, we cannot do it alone; it requires the support of the community. Our organization is based on a servant leader model. For those who answer “addiction” to the question of, “What breaks your heart?” our ministry is an amazing place to plug in and serve. We literally are saving lives, and you can physically see it happening daily in the 40 men who are here now, and the approximate 1,200 who were here before them. So while we do have amazing support, with the current opioid crisis, the need is becoming increasingly greater for a program like ours. Financial resources will always be our greatest need. If addiction is breaking someone’s heart, I’d love to personally talk to them to see how we might be able to get them plugged in to give and serve at No Longer Bound. ■

As easy as pie Amanda Wilbanks’ career path is lined with family recipes By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
I
t wasn’t the end result of her mother-in-law’s tutorial on baking — a delicious buttermilk pie — but the creative process itself that inspired Amanda Wilbanks to set off on a new career path. From that visit five years ago when she was introduced to the art of baking pies, Wilbanks has created a pie empire in metro Atlanta, with three locations of Southern Baked Pie Company churning out hundreds of pies each day. “I really didn’t know much about baking pies back then, but as I watched her make it there was an ‘aha’ moment,” recalled Wilbanks, who at the time was at a crossroads in her career. “It was about the process, and the artistry, but most important the connections and memories that were part of it.” The two women took the just baked pie from the oven and set it outside to cool, with Wilbanks resisting the urge to quickly cut into the pie. “She made me wait,” she said, laughing about her mother-in-law’s gentle admonishments. “The first bite was heavenly. The whole process from start to finish made me fall in love with it and I started baking pies for fun.” Originally from Habersham County, Wilbanks graduated from UGA in 2009 with a marketing degree. She quickly focused on climbing the corporate ladder of an established company. But after a year in insurance sales where she felt she hit the glass ceiling, Wilbanks knew she needed something different. “I had always wanted to own my own company,” said Wilbanks, who moved to Gainesville in 2012 when she and husband, Alex, married. “Both my parents were entrepreneurs and business owners, and dinner table conversation was always about business. I was surrounded by it.” She had grown up cooking at the feet of her grandmother and mother, but baking was new to her. With a handful of her mother-in-law Sandy Wilbanks’ recipes, Wilbanks set out to learn. Her first pies were simply for friends and family, but with rave reviews and encouragement, Wilbanks soon began selling her pies at area festivals. During the fall festival season in 2012, Wilbanks was making hundreds of pies each month out of her home kitchen. “In December alone I made close to 500 pies,” she said. “I knew this was something 20 | northsidewoman.com | september2017
goodeats
that could be a business…and that was the best decision I ever made.” Six months later, in August 2013, the Buttermilk Pie Company officially opened in Gainesville, named after the pie that started it all…and still Alex’s favorite pie. Wilbanks used her marketing and social media savvy to tap into the base of customers she gathered from previous sales, reaching out through Facebook and other platforms to let people know about the new brick and mortar business. But still, venturing out on her own was a scary prospect, even with Alex by her side as her business partner and chief financial officer. She was also the mother of a young son (she now has two, ages 7 and 2), and balancing parent and business duties required a lot of juggling. “On opening day I was scared to death,” laughs Wilbanks. “I couldn’t even bring myself to pull the craft paper off the windows, so my mom and aunt just ripped it down!” Wilbanks had nothing to worry about. On opening day, customers began to trickle in immediately and the lines grew as the hours went by. After three years of expanding sales, Wilbanks opened locations in Buckhead and in Alpharetta across from Avalon – both in October 2016. Wilbanks said she never planned to open two stores within weeks of each other, but construction delays outside her control made it necessary. It was one of many challenges she faced, and lessons learned, on the way to becoming a business owner, she noted. The company also changed the name to Southern Baked Pie Company, which better described the shops’ expansive menu of both dessert pies and dinner pies. Signature dessert pies include the caramel pecan pie which won the 2016 Flavor of Georgia Food Product Contest, along with chocolate chess, French coconut and apple. Popular mealtime pies include chicken pot pie and tomato. Seasonal creations are always a fixture on the menu depending on the time of year and include Georgia peach, pumpkin, blackberry, beef stroganoff and Southwestern taco pies. Today, the three stores employ 20 full-time people. Wilbanks loves that her staff is nearly all women, and said empowering women and supporting them in their careers is important. “My employees range from women who just need the opportunity to get back on their feet to those who were at the top of their game in the corporate world and just wanted to do something different,” she said. Despite the growth, Wilbanks says the pies remain identical to the ones she baked, one by one, in her home kitchen years ago. The recipes are from family, and the pies are made on location using locally-sourced ingredients. “Every single recipe came from my mother in law, with a few from my mom and grandmother,” Wilbanks said. “We don’t have anything on our menu that hasn’t been tried and tested.” Looking forward, Wilbanks said new locations will likely open in the next few years, and franchise opportunities are being considered. She is also excited about a cookbook coming out next year containing recipes for all the pies, even the prized all-butter crust. And despite being surrounded by pies all day at work, Wilbanks says they remain a huge part of her home life as well. “Honest to goodness you’ll definitely see pies in our house every day!” she said. ■

Every recipe available from Allrecipes comes from a community of more than 30 million. This extends to the photos, reviews, and ratings, which gives this particular app more of a social feel than others. One huge benefit to this is that you’re able to see what ingredients are on sale and what recipes are the cheapest to make on any given day. The app will also recommend recipes when you walk into certain stores, which could come in handy if you’re in the mood to make something special, but don’t really know what yet. Aside from all of that, Allrecipes comes with all the usual features, like the ability to create shopping lists, save your favorite recipes, and filter your search results by diet, cooking time, and foods you don’t like.

ittens is a sweet, social adult cat who is looking to become a constant companion to her “person.” She would be ideal for an elderly or single person who is seeking an indoor lap cat as a companion to be by their side, purring and content. She is approximately 8 years old, healthy, indoors only, spayed, front declawed and litter box trained. A change in her current home situation has led to her owner to try and find her a new safe place to live. Mittens is happiest around humans, will always be around your feet or reaching up for a hug, but also does very well around other kitties and dogs (who don’t chase). y mother’s reason for every command was “because I said so!” Today’s relationship of reasoning with children, especially when it comes to routines, is much more complicated than that and a lot more time consuming! Getting to bed on time, getting up on time, homework time, soccer, ballet, piano, baseball, football, and on and on, the life of a child is very busy! If parents don’t establish a routine for their child, things will go haywire….not to mention parents’ schedules and time management being in chaos. September is the perfect time to establish the reason for routines with children. If anyone is like me, the remaining couple of weeks of August still had a summer time vibe even though it was back to school time, so it was pretty tough to establish a reason for a routine when there was still the argument from kids that the pool was still open and it was not getting dark until way past when children should be getting in bed! September is soon enough to say
“ok everyone, you know what to expect with getting up early for school, the pool is closed, it’s back to business”…and a routine…. and take it from there. Brain research supports that whatever a child’s home life is like is what their brain will search for as a pattern in school. If a child’s home life is without rules, structure, or reason then they will find it hard to reason why they should follow rules and structure at school. Establishing boundaries that model reasonable expectations for time management and routines makes home life so much more productive and enjoyable, makes a child’s school life predictable for them and just makes for a happier child. Children who know what to expect and what is expected of them are just happier. So ~ we are all reasonable adults. We know that routines need to be established for a productive home life and school life for children. Will they accept it without a lot of whining, arguing, reasoning of their own, or creative manipulation? Who knows? But stay strong and if all reasoning fails, you always have the wisdom of our parents……”because I said so”……. ■

Interiors
orth Atlanta is a hub for trendy-yet-refined interior decor. With plenty of brick and mortar stores to choose from, the difficult part is picking which styles best reflect your personality and taste. Below, experts offer their views on designing for the Life Styles of today.
Let’s Discuss Window Treatments...
T
he first question I ask clients who are considering window treatments is whether they are necessary to ensure privacy or will they become an embellishment? In either situation, the proper selection can make or break the best design plan. Here are some suggestions that may assist in your quest for the perfect window treatments. I recommend stepping outside of your home and view your windows as you will also want to ensure their curb appeal. Create a uniform look across the windows on the front side of your home, even the garage windows, makes for a well thought out plan. Be consistent with your choice of coverings, wood blinds, shades, plantation shutters should be the same on all windows, allowing your over treatments to be shielded from the exterior view. Plantation shutters remain a popular choice for many home owners as they begin the window treatment process, they are available in a variety of styles and finishes and very often make a striking
design statement eliminating the need for further treatment. If privacy is not a concern and your view is beautiful, enjoy it without covering the windows, you may wish to have your glass tinted to reduce the fading of furniture and lower energy costs. When selecting windows during preconstruction or the replacement process keep in mind that built in shades are an available option, affording touch of a button functionality. Simplicity in your choice of over treatments is a good rule. Colors, textures and styles must only enhance your interior design not over power it. Choosing panels, I suggest keeping them tailored and neat. The can be sewn lined or unlined, their width size is determined by deciding if they will be opened and drawn or kept stationary. When hanging draperies, whether they be hung pleated, rod pocketed or from grommets have them graze the floor not touch, puddling is no longer considered vogue. The hardware is designated by scale of the window and
room, in addition to enhancing the fabric selection. Valances are a good way to bring color, dimension and texture to a room without obstructing your view, again keep them simple in style. Roman shades are a nice alternative for glass doors.

Minimally invasive options in gynecologic medicine
T
he field of gynecologic medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds over the last several years. Gone is the necessity for large incisions and long recoveries. According to Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga and Dr. Annie Kim of Modern Ob/Gyn, minimally invasive procedures are almost always the best options for patients. Heavy bleeding and painful cycles can now be treated with same day procedures that require no downtime. “There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times,” Dr. John Reyes said. “da Vinci robotic surgery is also an amazing service.” Endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts and other common issues are sometimes best addressed with robotic surgery. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci gynecologic robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes pioneered the implementation of this fastgrowing service in our community. Patients benefit from robotic surgery by having less risk for complications, short overnight hospital stays, faster recovery times, and minimal pain. Modern Ob/Gyn dedicates its gynecologic practice to minimally invasive surgeries and is an experienced leader in our community for robotic gynecologic surgery, performing these procedures at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth. The physicians at Modern ObGyn enjoy providing second opinions and consultations because they believe it is vital to make patients aware of their choices. “We really value educating our patients so they understand their medical issues, why certain treatments are better than others, and what their options are for treatment,” said Dr. Ingrid. ■

Reasons to seek varicose vein treatment By DR. BRENT TAYLOR Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery
W
hile varicose veins may seem like a cosmetic problem, they can also be the cause of leg pain, skin problems and other medical issues. Varicose veins do not always show above the surface of the skin, so even symptoms that might seem unrelated like leg swelling, discomfort, itching, tired or easily fatigued legs should prompt a visit to a vein specialist. Your leg problems might be easily correctable! The sooner that you receive treatment for a vein problem, the easier the problem is to treat. Early treatment can prevent some of the permanent skin changes that can accompany long-standing vein disease. With modern technology, vein treatment is now minimally invasive and a breeze to go through. When your veins fail to move the blood from the feet back to the heart, the blood will begin to pool in a vein. This is called venous stasis. Once a vein begins to leak backwards, pressure in the vein increases and the situation usually worsens. The tiny valves in the veins that help the blood continue against gravity stop working. Blood backs up further and a vicious cycle continues. The veins become engorged or swollen with blood that does not have much oxygen. The reason the veins look blue or purple is because the blood is deoxygenated. The vein should be bringing blood to the heart and lungs to be re-oxygenated, but instead it begins to act as a reservoir. This puts stress on the tissues around the vein and the areas of the leg and foot that the vein is supposed to be serving. Veins become weak for several reasons. The main reason is heredity. If your parents or grandparents have varicose veins, there is a good chance you will also develop them. Other causes are: • Hormonal changes due to pregnancy, puberty, menopause and taking birth control pills • Obesity that puts too much pressure on the legs, causing the veins to overwork • A sedentary lifestyle without
much exercise A job in which you sit or stand for hours, causing the veins to overwork • Injuries to TAYLOR the vein from trauma or blood clots • Some of the main reasons to seek vein treatment are: • Pain and soreness of the lower legs • Leg swelling • Restless legs • Problems with fragile veins getting easily injured and bleeding • Inflamed skin from blood clots in the veins • Skin breakdown or to prevent the development of venous ulcers • The improved appearance of your legs when the varicose veins are gone Once your veins are treated, the symptoms should be eliminated. The aches and pains, fatigue, swelling in the lower legs and ankles, itching and burning and cramps improve. For the vast majority of patients, symptoms from varicose veins are gone immediately after treatment. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, we offer several different kinds of treatments for both spider and varicose veins. During a consultation with our specialist, you can learn about the severity of your condition. A diagnosis may be given and a treatment recommended. Once the affected veins are removed via vein treatments, the blood will naturally flow through healthy veins. If you already have problematic veins or you suspect you may be developing varicose veins, it is in your best interest to receive treatment immediately. Your overall venous circulation will improve as well as your overall health. Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta is located in Alpharetta. Contact us today to schedule a consultation to learn more about your options for vein treatment. ■ •

hat if you or an older adult in your life could slow or even reverse the decline typically associated with aging? Residents at Atria Senior Living’s five Atlanta-area communities are doing just that through Better This Year, Atria’s forward-thinking approach to greater well-being. According to research conducted by Dr. Henry Lodge, coauthor of The New York Times bestseller Younger Next Year: The New Science of Aging, a surprising 70 percent of how successfully we age is determined by four key lifestyle choices. Dental Insurance- Use It or Lose It! By DR. USHMA PATEL AND Dr. BRITTANY CORBETT, D.D.S Center for Advanced Dentistry
A
Choosing your Orthodontist By DR. JEFFREY JORDAN Jordan Orthodontics
T
he person you entrust to provide your orthodontic care will deliver the smile that will be with you for important events like a first date, high school graduation, your wedding JORDAN day, and from the beginning of your career until the end. This is an important decision! If you know what to look for in an Orthodontist, it can help make a difficult search easier. An Orthodontist is a specialist, trained in aligning the teeth and jaws, usually a top graduate from dental school, completing an additional two to three years of rigorous training. This instruction makes him or her uniquely qualified to deliver a healthier mouth, a more pleasing appearance, and teeth that are more likely to last a lifetime. Only an Orthodontist can be a member of the American Association of Orthodontist or be a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics. So, look for the logo, making sure you’re getting an Orthodontist! An Orthodontist with a full time practice is more likely to be available for the reality of poking wires, broken brackets, or any other emergency situations that need to be addressed. Over the course of your treatment, your Orthodontist will evaluate your
t the end of every calendar year, patients tell us they have gotten busy with work, school and holiday activities and have simply run out of time. They haven’t scheduled necessary dental treatment for themselves or their family and haven’t used their entire dental insurance benefit. Those benefits will not roll over to the next year and that means you are wasting your insurance payments. Bottom line: When it comes to dental insurance benefits, USE IT OR LOSE IT! Unlike medical insurance, dental insurance and dental plans provide you with a specific dollar amount to spend on your care each year. This means you may have dental dollars that will disappear if your plan, like many, renews in January! Dr. Patel advises, “It’s always smart to try to maximize dental insurance coverage this year so that next year’s benefits can be used for any unexpected treatment that may arise.” Additionally, many plans will reset in January and that means you will again be required to pay 100% of your annual insurance deductible before your
insurance company pays any dental benefits. We’re halfway through the year so we have time to schedule the treatment you need. Now is the perfect time to achieve the PATEL smile you’ve always wanted and avoid the holiday rush! REMEMBER: DENTAL HEALTH IMPACTS REGULAR HEALTH. You may be surprised to learn that unhealthy teeth can contribute to disease CORBETT such as heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and infection of the heart lining. Sleep apnea, a condition where you stop breathing repeatedly during the night, increases your risk of stroke, high blood pressure and heart disease. Contact our office at 770-884-6623 or visit our website: www.HiTechSmiles.com , and together let’s make sure you are in excellent dental health and getting the full value of your insurance. ■
bite at each appointment, making the continuum of care unbroken. You will want to find an Orthodontist that offers convenient office hours, including after school appointments. You will see your Orthodontist often; so, compatibility is important. Today, there are a variety of treatment options, but only an Orthodontist has the training and expertise to design a plan to achieve your desired smile. Ceramic braces deliver the esthetics of clear braces with the functionality of metal braces. For bite problems that previously required braces, Invisalign is available. Invisalign does the software imaging and the manufacturing process, but you need a qualified, certified, experienced Orthodontist to achieve great results! Here are a few helpful questions when interviewing an Orthodontist: 1) What needs to be done? 2) What are my options? 3) What are the consequences if I don’t do the treatment now? 4) How long will the treatment take? 5) What are your office hours? 6) How long have you been in practice? 7) How much will this cost? 8) How is the treatment cost determined? Whether you are considering orthodontic treatment for yourself, your child or just someone you love, an Orthodontist will guide you through the process, align your teeth, correct your bite, and create a smile that you love. The laughter is up to you! ■ september2017 | northsidewoman.com | 33

Taking care of your skin vs. taking care of your oral health
I
t’s odd to think of the skin and mouth being similar. But they both have many things in common. For example, both are indicative of good health. Skin rashes and poor gums are indicative of imbalances in our body’s health. Both healthy skin and oral health are first-line defenses against viruses and bacteria. Washing your face in the morning and evening is similar to brushing your teeth in the morning and at night. Using a moisturizer with sunscreen and rinsing with oral mouthwash form a protective barrier between us and harm - think of UV rays that cause cancer and pathogens in our air and food. Do you exfoliate your face, floss your teeth or use a dental pick? Debris removal whether in between your teeth, accumulating in your pores or hiding amongst epidermal skin layers are unfortunately ideal sites for harmful germs to live and multiply. Good regular homecare can reveal and clean these hiding places. Just as poor health habits can wreak havoc through your skin and mouth, so can stress. Stressful outbreaks such as acne, rashes, and canker sores are white flags notifying us that our immune system is overwhelmed. Stress causes deleterious biochemical processes that force our immune system to work even harder. Releasing the stress allows our immune system to concentrate its efforts on the pathogen. Sometimes we forget or are too tired to take care of ourselves on a daily basis. Sometimes despite all that we do, we cannot achieve the health we desire. Be pro-active before things get worse and schedule your facial and dental appointments. Regain your health, reduce your stress, and take care of your mind and body so that it can take care of you for many years to come. ■

NEW PATIENT SPECIAL
HyperSensitive Teeth & Treatment By DAVID REMALEY, DDS Roswell Dental Care
I
s the taste of ice cream or a sip of hot coffee sometimes a painful experience for you? Does brushing or flossing make you wince occasionally? If so, you may have sensitive teeth. Possible causes include: • Tooth decay (cavities) • Fractured teeth • Worn fillings • Gum disease • Worn tooth enamel • Exposed tooth root In healthy teeth, a layer of enamel protects the crowns of your teeth—the part above the gum line. Under the gum line a layer called cementum protects the tooth root. Underneath both the enamel and the cementum is dentin. Dentin is less dense than enamel and cementum and contains microscopic tubules (small hollow tubes or canals). When dentin loses its protective covering of enamel or cementum these tubules allow heat and cold or acidic or sticky foods to reach the nerves and cells inside the tooth. Dentin may also be exposed when gums recede. The result can be hypersensitivity. Sensitive teeth can be treated. The type of treatment will depend on what is causing the sensitivity. Your dentist may suggest one of a variety of treatments:
Desensitizing toothpaste. This contains compounds that help block transmission of sensation from the tooth surface to the nerve, and usually requires several REMALEY applications before the sensitivity is reduced. Fluoride gel. An in-office technique which strengthens tooth enamel and reduces the transmission of sensations. A crown, inlay or bonding. These may be used to correct a flaw or decay that results in sensitivity. Surgical gum graft. If gum tissue has been lost from the root, this will protect the root and reduce sensitivity. Root canal. If sensitivity is severe and persistent and cannot be treated by other means, your dentist may recommend this treatment to eliminate the problem. Proper oral hygiene is the key to preventing sensitive-tooth pain. Roswell Dental Care can answer any questions about your daily oral hygiene routine or concerns about tooth sensitivity. Regular dental cleanings and checkups can treat minor dental issues and prevent further damage to your teeth. We always welcome new patients.
