ATLANTA — Fulton County Commission Chairman John Eaves called for a criminal investigation Friday of singer R. Kelly. The call comes in the face of “new evidence” that the recording artist has been sexually exploiting and holding young women against their will in his Johns Creek home.

Eaves, who is running for mayor of Atlanta, said that the Johns Creek Police Department had given “key information” about the allegations, and he is urging the district attorney to thoroughly investigate.

“I believe the citizens of Fulton County deserve this investigation,” Eaves said. “Questions should be answered and no stones should be left unturned.”

The parents of one of the women allegedly living with Kelly held a press conference earlier in July saying that their daughter was being held against her will. The 21-year-old daughter has publicly denied the accusations and said she was fine.

Kelly currently has a concert scheduled Aug. 25 at Wolf Creek Amphitheater in Atlanta. Eaves said he was contact by several constituents to request the concert’s cancellation and that last week, 36,000 people signed an online petition to cancel the concert.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A man Alpharetta police said was wanted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency was arrested Aug. 4 after he allegedly led officers on a chase.

Ely Gomes Araujo, 38, of Lexington Farm Drive in Alpharetta, is facing multiple charges, including DUI, resistARAUJO ing arrest, reckless driving first offense, failure to maintain lane and aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Officers were patrolling on Old Milton Parkway around 1 a.m. that night when they saw a 2007 Ford Econoline van drifting between lanes. When they attempted to pull over the driver, later identified as Araujo, the vehicle sped off.

During the chase, the car made

two left turns through red lights before leading police to The Lex Apartments. Araujo opened the gate with a resident keycard, hit a police car on the other side and continued driving toward the back of the complex.

Araujo’s van was eventually stopped when another police car struck the rear side, causing him to slow down. Police said he then jumped out of the van to run to one of the apartments, nearly colliding with a police car. Araujo attempted to pull away from officers when he was apprehended, according to police. He was transported to Fulton County Jail on a total of 10 charges.

After the arrest, officers received a notice that Araujo had an active warrant from ICE. “It’s my understanding that he was wanted for failing to deport,” Public Information Officer George Gordon said.

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners has unanimously voted to send a letter to Live Nation to cancel the Wolf Creek performance. Eaves noted that Fulton County does not have the legal right to cancel the concert.

As of press time, the concert is still on.

On August 21st a total solar eclipse will stretch across the country. It will be visible in a band spanning from Oregon to South Carolina.

You will be able to see the total solar eclipse in northeast corner of Georgia. Around the Atlanta area it will appear as a partial eclipse. A solar eclipse can be a breathtaking phenomenon, but certain precautions should be taken to keep your eyes safe. Here is everything you need to know about the eclipse and how to enjoy it without damaging your eyes.

What is a Total Solar Eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon blocks the sun in its entirety. This total solar eclipse will be visible across 14 states in the continental U.S. When will it cross Georgia?

The shadow of the moon will first appear in Georgia at 2:34 pm EDT and will leave the state at 2:40 pm EDT. In other words, this once in a lifetime sight will not linger. The moon’s shadow will be moving at approximately 1,800 miles per hour.

Safety guidelines Most of us were told from an early age not to stare directly at the sun and that advise holds true during a solar eclipse. Watching a solar eclipse with your naked eyes can cause permanent damage to your retinas. Sunglasses, no matter how dark, will not protect your eyes from this damage. Instead you will need a special-purpose solar filter, such as eclipse glasses. Eclipse glasses generally look like 3D glasses. They have black lenses and are specifically designed for looking at the sun. Everything else will appear totally black.

You should proceed with caution when purchasing solar eclipse glasses. Not all companies that claim to be selling these glasses can be trusted. The American Astronomical Society, a partner of NASA, has only vouched for the eclipse glasses produced by the following five companies: • American Paper Optics • Rainbow Symphony • TSE 17 • Thousand Oaks Optical • Baader Planetarium Furthermore, you should make sure your glasses meet the following criteria given by NASA • Designated ISO 12312-2 international standard • Manufacturer’s name and address printed somewhere on the product • Do not use glasses that are older than three years or that have scratched or wrinkled lenses There are some low-cost alternatives for viewing the eclipse that may be especially appealing to parents who want to do a science project with their children. One such alternative is the pin-hole viewer. This method simply requires a piece of paper, a pen, and a relatively smooth area of ground. The sun’s light will project through the hole in the paper as the moon passes across.

With home prices increasing, workers find renting is tough

NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Housing costs continued to climb in Metro Atlanta through the first part of August, and few places have seen greater value growth than North Fulton.

The latest data from online real estate tracker Tulia shows the median sales price for a home in Roswell is at $371,000. The same home in Alpharetta will fetch about $12,000 more.

Estimates from online real estate data firms such as RealtyTrac, Trulia and Zillow show home prices in North Fulton cities have risen close to 7 percent over the past year. And those values are predicted to keep climbing.

While home values climb, the inventory of affordable housing is shrinking, particularly in North Fulton. There incomes for most families have not kept up with the rising market.

The affordable housing crunch has surfaced as a chief topic of concern in some cities.

Roswell officials recently reported that only about a quarter of city employees, 21 percent, live within the city.

That figure is even lower for Roswell workers as a whole, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

In Alpharetta, city leaders are in the beginning stages of developing a strategy to provide affordable housing to its growing workforce.

Early data shows that 94 percent of workers commute into Alpharetta while the other 6 percent of employees live within the city.

And if this were not enough, a 2015 Brookings Institute study ranked Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell 10th in the nation for the decline in the number of average jobs near residents.

The figures were based on numbers from 2000 to 2012 and showed a decline of nearly 15 percent over that span.

What’s worse, a report released this week by Apartment List, which tracks tens of thousands of renters across the country, says 76 percent of renters in Metro Atlanta plan to relocate to other

areas.

Of those renters, 26 percent cite affordable housing as the chief factor in their decision.

Andrew Woo, data scientist with Apartment List, said Metro Atlanta is not alone.

“We found that only 10 of the 50 largest metros in the country have supplied enough new housing to keep pace with job growth in recent years,” he said.

“There is a strong correlation between the supply of new housing and rent growth, indicating that the lack of new construction is contributing to the affordability crisis in many parts of the country.”

Alpharetta to close lanes for Corporate Challenge

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Evening commuters should take note: the City of Alpharetta will close portions of Academy Street and Haynes Bridge Road from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 24, for the Mayor’s Corporate Challenge 5K Run and Block Party.

This is the 21st year for the event, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Alpharetta, LexisNexis and the city.

The evening will include the Kids Fun Run, Food Truck Alley and live music.

• Haynes Bridge Road between Old Milton Parkway and Academy Street will be closed to all traffic during the celebration.

• Academy Street will be closed to all traffic between Westside Parkway and Main Street.

• One southbound lane of Westside Parkway and one westbound lane of Old Milton Parkway will also be closed to traffic.

City officials say they expect heavy traffic delays and urge commuters to plan alternate routes.

Due to the complete closure of Academy Street for the 90 minute period, notifications are being sent to residents who live along the affected section of the roadway. The city will also place digital signs on the three roadways to notify commuters.

This year’s 5K run is expected to draw nearly 2,000 runners.

Participants will begin and end the race at Alpharetta City Hall, following a course along Haynes Bridge Road, to Academy Street, Westside Parkway, to Old Milton Parkway.

Alpharetta officials plan to open the course’s roadways as soon as all runners clear each affected road.

Roswell approves bond to purchase Mimosa Hall Council buys list of furniture, items inside historic home

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The City of Roswell is one step closer to acquiring Mimosa Hall and the historical furniture within its confines.

The City Council approved a plan Monday night to borrow money to purchase the building for historic preservation and to buy a portion of its furniture.

The council unanimously voted to approve a $2.9 million bond through the Georgia Municipal Association with a fixed 2.25 percent issuance for 10 years.

At the public hearing for the leasepurchase financing, resident Janet Russell urged the council to buy the property without borrowing to avoid the interest. The money that would have gone toward the interest could be used to buy the rest of the furniture, she added.

Roswell staff, however, disagreed.

It makes the most sense to borrow the money, because the city does not have the necessary cash at the moment, said Interim Director of Finance Ryan Luckett.

Shortly after, council members unanimously voted to purchase a list of period furniture and items currently in Mimosa Hall for $30,000. Councilmember Mike Palermo abstained from the vote.

The city is saving a significant amount of money because market value

for the list is almost $50,000, Councilmember Donald Horton said.

The list includes items such as clocks, paintings, chairs, candlesticks, a dollhouse and mower.

Palermo said he supported the majority of the purchases but was hesitant to include the more modern items, such as the mower.

Horton said that such items tell the continuing story of the families that lived in the house.

“When it comes to preservation, history does not stop,” Horton said.

“History has to do with the people, not just the items.”

There is still more furniture that could be purchased from Mimosa Hall.

There is a second list, also worth about $30,000, that the owner is willing to sell the city. However, the council did not vote on that list.

The remaining items, if not bought by the city, will go up for auction and will likely be purchased quickly by someone else, said Steve Gibson, president of citizen group Friends of Mimosa Hall and Gardens.

“This is a singular opportunity for us to capture many of the original items,” Gibson said. “We have to furnish [Mimosa Hall] anyway…with funds that will likely be a lot more than $30,000.”

The second list of items did not get to the council in time to be included in Monday night’s agenda for the vote, Horton said.

Mayor Jere Wood did not let Councilmember Marcelo Zapata amend the motion to include the second list as well.

The Friends of Mimosa Hall and Garden are looking to raise $30,000 to purchase the remaining items.

Many safe ways to view the eclipse

By Peter Becker More Content Now On Aug. 21, the sun will be partially eclipsed by the moon all over the nation; along a narrow track from coast to coast, will the sun be totally eclipsed. For most of America, if you use special precautions to safely look, the sun will appear shaped like a crescent, as the invisible moon slowly passes part way in front.

The sun is much too bright to look at directly without special precaution.

Looking at the sun with unfiltered binoculars or a telescope would blind a person. Fortunately, using solar filters or indirect means to see a projected image on a screen, you can examine our star safely on any sunny day.

Without a telescope, you can use special solar filters that are mounted in eyeglass frames. Several companies are selling these in anticipation of the August eclipse. They are typically inexpensive. You can search online and shop around for “eclipse glasses” or “eclipse shades.”

On any sunny day you can see the sun safely in a variety of other ways: • With a pin hole in a closed window shade, the sun will cast a small, dim image inside the darkened room, which you can catch on a white cardboard screen. This is an excellent way to see the crescent shape of the partially eclipsed sun on eclipse day.

• Similarly, you can make a shoe box viewer with a pinhole on one end and a white screen on the other; the

image will be very small.

• Another variation is to cap a long cardboard tube that held wrapping paper. Put a pinhole in the center of the cap. Rest the tube on your shoulder with the cap facing the sun and your back to the sun. Hold a white cardboard sheet in front of the open end of the tube, to see the solar image.

• Any tiny hole will do. Try this the next sunny day: Make a nearly clenched fist, leaving only a very narrow space; sunlight can be cast right on the palm of your other hand. Also look under a leafy tree. This is most amazing during a partial eclipse. The hundreds of tiny holes left between overlapping leaves will project hundreds of crescent suns on the ground.

Hint: Lay a white sheet on the shaded grass for the best view.

• With a small round mirror, or a larger one mostly covered up with paper leaving a small, round hole, you can reflect a sharp image of the sun on a white screen set up (or a white wall) in a shadowed area.

• Using a telescope or binoculars, you can safely project a magnified image of the sun onto a white screen.

See For Yourself...

Never use the small “finder scope” to look through, to line it up with the sun. Instead, adjust your telescope by watching the shadow of the tube; once it becomes round, you have targeted the sun. Hold white cardboard several inches away from the eyepiece. You may need to slowly adjust the tube but the sun’s image will come onto the screen; focus and look for any dark sunspots, or during the eclipse, watch how the crescent progresses while the invisible Moon passes in front. NOTE: Be careful if children are around.

Cover up or remove the finder scope, and do not let ANYONE look through the telescope unless there is a safe solar filter properly attached.

• Use a Sunspotter. This marvelous device was invented and patented by my late friend Daniel R. Janosik Sr. in the late 1970s. He made over 1,000 of these in his home near Hawley, Pennsylvania, and sold them to schools and individuals across the country.

His first version was cube-shaped. The second and most successful version was shaped like a triangle and open to see inside. It uses lenses and mirrors to conveniently project a sharp, magnified image of the sun onto a white screen inside the device. It’s handy for group observing. 10 things to know about the total solar eclipse

By MORE CONTENT NOW Something rare and awesome is about to happen in the U.S. On Aug. 21 there will be a total solar eclipse, and if you live in the path of totality, you will have the opportunity to have your day turned to night as the moon will totally block out the sun. Here are 10 things you should know about the event.

1. The total solar eclipse will take place around 10:16 a.m. PDT in Oregon, 11:46 a.m. CDT in Missouri and 1 p.m. EDT in South Carolina.

2. Along the “path of totality” — where the eclipse will be seen the best — the total solar eclipse will last for about 2 1/2 minutes or less.

3. The path of totality will darken the skies from Oregon to South Carolina.

4. The total solar eclipse will cast a 70-mile wide shadow.

5. Those outside the path of totality will witness a partial solar eclipse — rest assured, it will still be cool.

6. The last total solar eclipse viewed from the contiguous U.S. was Feb. 26, 1979.

7. The total solar eclipse of June 8, 1918, crossed a similar path, traveling from Washington to Florida.

8. Total solar eclipses occur approximately once every 18 months, but it depends where on Earth you are if you have a chance to see them.

9. The next annular solar eclipse that can be seen in the U.S. will be Oct. 14, 2023, and will be visible from Northern California to Florida.

10. The next total solar eclipse will be visible from Texas to Maine on April 8, 2024.

Fulton Schools plan eclipse schedule Schools encouraged to provide opportunity for student activities

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Fulton County students will participate in the nation’s biggest science spectacle when the solar eclipse on Aug. 21 makes its way across Georgia.

Last month Fulton School leaders joined the growing list of local systems to adjust dismissal schedules to accommodate both student safety as well as the desire to give students a front seat at the once-a-century event.

The skies will begin to darken after noon, but the time of greatest darkness, 2:35 p.m., is smack in the middle of elementary dismissal. Fulton Schools will delay dismissal for elementary grades till 3:05 p.m., which will also cause delays for bus riders in middle and high schools.

“The 45-minute delay will both ensure safety for students as well as give schools the opportunity to have educational experiences in real-time,” said Susan Hale, spokesperson for Fulton Schools. “There are some very exciting [instructional] opportunities...and we are looking forward to sharing them with our students.”

As a charter system, Hale said individual schools have flexibility on how they will conduct eclipse activities, but there are standards in place for safety and accountability.

If students are outside, the event is considered a field trip so the proper adult-student ratios must be in place, and all participants must use safety equipment.

If parents wish to keep their children home that day, or check them out early, the absence will be excused, she added. Each school should have their eclipse plans on their website for reference, and information will be emailed/ sent home with students as well.

Waivers are also available if a student chooses not to participate.

Construction well underway downtown behind blue veil Alpharetta City Center begins to take shape

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – If you’re wondering what’s going on behind that blue curtain around much of downtown Alpharetta, just listen.

Heavy machinery, hammers and trucks ring out the rumble of construction on an $85 million project city leaders say will transform the area into a business and entertainment hub.

At the site where local officials ate cake for a groundbreaking three months ago, scaffoldings, footings and subfloors now carry the landscape.

Cranes swivel with heavy beams dangling toward a framework that will soon house a women’s boutique.

Workers trod on dirt paths and uneven terrain to grab a tool or a spec sheet to lug back to another skeletal building at another corner of the site.

“We’re in merchandizing and air traffic control mode right now,” said Cheri Morris, president of Morris & Fellows, which is heading the retail portion of the project. “We are very close to 100 percent leased for the shops.”

All will be anchored on the east end by the new City Hall and Fulton County Library, which were completed more than two years ago.

It will encompass five city blocks.

Before the first spade of dirt was turned, Morris said she researched the history of the downtown to match as much of the old architecture as possible. Every building, every shop will be constructed to match late 19th and early 20th Century architecture, she said.

The Highland Bakery will occupy a building on the corner of Main and Academy streets that replicates the 1847 Milton Courthouse. Another building is fashioned after the old Cotton Exchange, where goods were bought and sold on the first floor and commodities were stored on the second floor.

Farther south along Main Street, the 1915 Jones House is being restored for conversion into a restaurant.

Next door, Hard Baily’s early 20th Century blacksmith shop is being recreated as “The Workshop,” where Phillip Cooper, owner of Vin 25 in Roswell, will open a new concept restaurant in the spring.

In all, retail plans call for about a dozen restaurants, eight ladies’ apparel stores and a men’s clothing store.

Shops will occupy the ground level of two multi-family buildings, each ranging from three stories to four stories. These apartment buildings are a little hard to nail down visually because their faces and heights will vary within each structure.

Some parts of the facades will be brick and some stone. It’s all to give the impression that there are more than

Deliveries are another consideration at the site.

“This is a very intimate district, and delivery trucks just can’t get everywhere,” Morris said. “It’s more important for us to be a downtown district than for us to get delivery trucks at every shop.”

As a result, those shops requiring large deliveries are situated at the east edge of the development where trucks have easy access.

The four-story office building includes retail on the ground floor, with DataScan, a technology finance service company, occupying the top three floors.

Overall construction is expected to last 18 months, but some shops should open earlier as work moves from Main Street eastward.

Right now, there’s little except the height of some frameworks to distinguish one building from another, but Morris said the plan will begin to take shape soon.

She sees it all in her head.

“I wish I had more space,” she said wistfully. “Everyone wants to be in downtown Alpharetta.”

ALPHARETTA, Ga. − The Alpharetta City Council this month added a new amenity to its downtown City Center Project.

The council voted unanimously Aug. 7 to pay $335,000 to have service lines for AT&T and Comcast buried along Academy Street from Park Plaza to Main Street. The cost will be absorbed by reducing AT&T’s franchise fee accordingly over the next four years.

The price tag does not include the city’s contribution of $275,000 to bury lines from Georgia Power.

Under the latest proposal, AT&T would relocate the overhead lines to coincide with the Georgia Power work, saving hundreds of thousands in costs, city officials said. Comcast would use the AT&T conduit for its service line as well.

The decision was prompted when developers for the project learned that utilities would have to install concrete poles along the street to support new lines when relocation work was performed. Under terms of an agreement last fall, the developer, MMS Alpharetta, would pay the first $100,000 of the costs for utility relocation.

Cheri Morris, of Morris & Fellows, one of the three firms involved in the project, said MMS has spent closer to $150,000 for the utility work.

At the same Aug. 7 meeting, the City Council approved an amendment to the local noise ordinance that allows an exception for City Center. The provision relaxes some of the noise levels within the development so that, for example, restaurants can operate below residential quarters.

City Attorney Sam Thomas said the amendment does not permit excessive noise levels traveling outside the development. Those restrictions remain in place, he said.

City Center received one other adjustment to its original agreement earlier this year when the City Council allowed a variation in the height requirements on some of the buildings.

The city had set height requirements of 24 feet on Main Street, but Morris said the restriction would mean an homogenized street front.

“By relaxing the height restriction and allowing a variance of 1 foot to 2 feet the street will offer a visual diversity that was more authentic to late 19th century to early 20th century Alpharetta, Morris said.”

Truck passenger killed when vehicle strikes telephone pole ROSWELL, Ga. — A passenger was killed in a single-vehicle accident Monday when a truck crashed into a telephone pole.

According to police, the incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Hardscrabble Road. The passenger was already dead when help arrived.

The driver was still alert and conscious when taken to a hospital, police said.

Hardscrabble Road, from Crossville to King Road, was closed for several hours while emergency services worked on repairs. The crash split the pole in half, sending live wires down on the truck, police said.

Power for thousands of nearby homes was temporarily shut off so emergency services could rescue the driver. Georgia Power arrived on scene to repair the pole.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Man kills daughter, self in standoff with deputies SWAT team discovers tragic scene inside home following 3-hour vigil

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — An 11-month old child died after she was shot by her father Aug. 7 while he barricaded them in their South Forsyth County home, later killing himself.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a 911 call around 3:30 p.m. Aug. 7 from a female victim of a domestic dispute on Carleen Way in South Forsyth.

The victim called from a neighbor’s house and said her husband, Salman Ashraf, 34, threatened her and their 11-month-old daughter with a handgun.

Responding deputies reached the suspect by phone and asked him to come outside and talk. The subject agreed at first but never exited the home. Deputies had no further communication with him.

During their brief conversation, the sheriff’s office said nothing threatening was said or implied by the suspect, and no shots were fired at or by any deputies.

For the next three hours, deputies attempted to regain contact with the man through various means as well as through a family member.

With growing concern for the child, the sheriff’s office SWAT team entered the house and heard the sounds of an infant upstairs.

The child was found seriously injured from an apparent gunshot wound as well. A SWAT medic and other deputies immediately began administering aid to the child, who was transported by an ambulance already on scene to a local hospital.

The child was later air lifted to an Atlanta area hospital where she was in critical condition, but later died.

Deputies transported the wife to the hospital to be with her child.

The sheriff’s office Major Crimes Unit is continuing the investigation.

Delayed tax bills push Fulton Schools System takes out short-term loan to cover budget

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - Delays in property tax payments could cost the Fulton School System $185,000 while it awaits local tax receipts to begin flowing into the system’s coffers.

This year Fulton County homeowners have an extra 60 days to pay their tax bills after controversy erupted over increased property assessments. That delay means money directed to Fulton Schools – about half of the average residential tax bill – may not arrive till December.

This week the Fulton School Board is set to approve a $75 million tax anticipation note to cover the gap in revenues and expenditures. Without the note, school officials said the system could face a cash crunch toward the end of the year.

Nearly 65 percent of the school system’s budget comes from local property taxes, leaving few options to cover shortfalls.

“Every month our payroll alone is $66 million,” noted Robert Mo-

rales, chief financial officer for Fulton Schools. “When tax [receipts] are delayed our cash balances are going to reach their lowest levels in November.”

Fulton Schools can borrow up to $75 million, and will pay 1 percent in interest, plus other fees and expenses, for a potential price tag of up to $185,000 on top of the loan. The note is short term, and must be paid back

by Dec. 31 or the school system could jeopardize its AAA credit rating – an unlikely situation, Morales said.

Until November, Morales said strong reserve funds held by Fulton Schools should mitigate the financial situation and pay all bills till the loan kicks in. He hopes the system will need to borrow no more than $50 million of the approved $75 million to weather the storm.

The delay in tax payments stems from the decision by the Fulton Board of Commissioners to rescind the original 2017 residential property assessments sent out this past spring. The move came in response to an eruption by thousands of homeowners who saw the values of their homes inexplicably

In June Fulton officials voted to freeze residential assessments at 2016 levels. Homeowners were issued new assessments in early August, and tax bills will be sent out next month.

“The normal time frame for tax bills [to be sent out] is late July or early

August, with taxes due 60 days later in October,” Morales explained. “This process is going to be delayed by two months at least.”

The situation places Fulton Schools in a quandary. The $1 billion budget for the FY18 general fund, which covers school operations, went into effect July 1 and includes a $48 million increase over FY17. The jump in expenditures was to be covered by an expected 6 percent increase in local tax revenues.

Morales said he will not know till the end of August when the tax digest comes out if revenues will balance expenditures. The freeze on tax assessments does not apply to commercial properties, which Morales said appears to have seen growth from last year.

The most significant decision facing Fulton Schools is the adoption of the millage rate. The FY18 budget assumes the millage rate will be the same as last year. But if revenue drops with the revised assessments, the system could face cutbacks or a potential increase in millage.

Once the tax digest is approved, Fulton Schools will hold public hearings on the millage rate if needed, and expects to have the rate set by mid-September.

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Drake House recently received the coveted 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, a national nonprofit evaluator. The nonprofit joins 73 other charities in the state of Georgia with this recognition.

Four stars is the highest rating a nonprofit can receive from the Charity Navigator, indicating that the charity exceeds industry standards and outperforms most of its peers in its cause.

Charity Navigator bases its ratings on fiscal responsibility and transparency.

“The Drake House’s 4-star rating puts it in a very select group of high-performing charities,” said Michael Thatcher, president and CEO of Charity Navigator. “Out of the thousands of nonprofits Charity Navigator evaluates, only one out of four earns 4 stars. Drake House supporters should feel proud and much more confident that their hard-earned dollars are being efficiently used.”

About a quarter of the rated charities in Georgia, 74 out of 219, have been given four stars. Other local 4-star charities include Habitat for Humanity – North Central Georgia in Roswell, Hire Heroes USA in Alpharetta and North Fulton Community Charities in Roswell.

This is the first year The Drake House has been eligible for a Charity Navigator rating.

But this year’s arrival of seven new head coaches is unprecedented, mirroring the changes all around the state which will see 97 KEMPER new head coaches this year.

Five North Fulton public schools have new leaders at the helm this season, as well as West Forsyth and Pinecrest Academy in Forsyth.

Two of those coaches have come CLACK from within the North Fulton/Forsyth County area – Matt Kemper and Adam Clack.

After two seasons at Johns Creek, where he led the Gladiators to their first region title in 2016, Matt Kemper will make his debut at Roswell. Kemper is the first Roswell head coach to be hired outside the program since the 1950s.

Kemper will lead what is almost an entirely new coaching staff for the Hornets with 10 of 12 coaches entering

their first season with Roswell.

The Hornet’s rivals, Milton, will also be under new direction on the sidelines when Adam Clack enters his first season for the Eagles.

Clack led West Forsyth, Milton’s Region 5-AAAAAAA opponent, for three seasons.

West made two playoff appearances and went 20-12 under Clack.

Mathis spent 13 seasons in the NFL, including eight with the Atlanta Falcons, as CAHILL a receiver. He brings his knowledge of NFL experience to the Paladins, as well as assistant coaching experience with Savannah State University.

West Forsyth’s Cahill will make his head coaching debut when the Wolverines play Woodstock Aug. 18. He has 15 years of coaching experience, most recently spending three years as the offensive coordinator at Lanier.

Alpharetta has talent, experience in 2017 squad Raiders seek to recapture region title

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta head coach Jacob Nichols says the goal for his 2017 team is to get the Raiders back to wearing the crown of region champions. He also understands how difficult that may be in Region 7-AAAAAA, where his team placed third last year after losing to two region opponents by a single score.

In fact, all four of the Raiders’ losses in 2016 came by a single score. So Nichols is well-aware that getting his team

back to region champion status will require focus on finishing games.

“In all of those situations we had the opportunity to win the game,” Nichols said. “Whether it was a matter of experience, youth or lack of execution, unfortunately the ball never really fell on our side in those situations.”

Those demoralizing losses will be used as motivation this year.

“We know how close we were a year ago and how much further we can go just by fixing those little things and making sure we don’t leave anything out there on the field,” Nichols said.

Much of the same core of last year’s squad will take that experience and motivation to move forward in 2017, with Alpharetta returning 16 starters and boasting a 28-man senior class.

“Look across our depth chart and it’s

two-deep with seniors,” Nichols said. “It always helps to have that many players come back with experience and we are definitely blessed with numbers.”

Leading the Raiders’ spread offense will be three-year starters in quarterback Matthew Downing and running back Nolan Edmonds, the keys to Alpharetta’s offensive success, Nichols said.

Downing threw for over 2,200 yards with 24 touchdowns last year, while Edmonds led the Raiders in rushing yards while sharing duties.

“I think we are definitely clicking on all cylinders,” Downing said. “We’ve added a new dynamic to our offense and hopefully we can put our defense in better situations [than last year].”

Roswell looking for new talent to emerge in 2017 First-year head coach looking to continue Hornets’ successful run

safety Jesse Bridgeman, who compiled 53 total tackles last year.

“He’s an incredibly smart football player and a great leader,” Kemper said.

“He’s played in all the big games and doesn’t get rattled.”

Bridgeman will be joined by free safety Sam Antona and cornerbacks Jaiden Harris and Joshua Reid to make up the Hornets’ secondary.

Roswell’s linebacker core, which Kemper called the strength of the team,

includes Cole Anderson and transfers Tyrone Hopper and Jamal Littlejohn, who Kemper said are talented and athletic.

Kemper will continue to run Roswell in a spread offense, and for the thirdstraight year, the Hornets will have a senior transfer at quarterback.

At 6-foot-4, Cordel Littlejohn already has Division 1 scholarship offers, and will lead the Hornets’ offense. “[Cordel] brings a lot to the table,”

Kemper said. “He has a good arm, runs when he has to and is a great competitor.”

Coming from an air-raid offense at his previous school, Kemper said Cordel has been working on his running prowess in the offseason.

Three rushers will share carries for Roswell, led by 5-foot-10, 210 pound junior Kamonty Jett. Jamal Littlejohn, who Kemper called “big and powerful” will share time with senior Joseph Daniels who will likely earn receiving yards out of the backfield.

The Hornets receiving core will be led by Walt Warren, who has moved to receiver after serving as backup quarterback the past two seasons.

Joining Warren will be athletic Caleb Guidry and Ryan Pike, “a crisp route runner,” Kemper said.

The Hornets’ offensive line will be all new for 2017.

Kent Donalson and Carson Barrett will step up as guards, with Hudson Chuck and Trey Zimmerman at tackle.

Junior Alek Nikolich will start at center.

Graduated kicker Turner Barckhoff has left a gap in kicking duties. Kemper said the team is still seeking a replacement.

Roswell will have five non-region games to see where its inexperienced squad stands, but Kemper said his team will still be out to win.

“It’s a pretty high bar, but it’s the last five that count,” he said.

The Hornets’ will seek to capture a third straight region title, something the program has not accomplished in its 68-year history.

But with a more experienced Woodstock team, a talented Lassiter team and Cherokee, who nearly beat Roswell for the region championship last season, Kemper knows there are tests throughout the region schedule.

“There are no gimmies,” he said.

Defensively, the Raiders’ return all of the 2016 secondary and five of their front seven, in what Nichols said will be one of the top defenses in the state in their class.

Included in that mix is three-year starter Reid Schultz at linebacker, who was second on the team in tackles last season, and defensive lineman Nick Markus who had 14.5 sacks and 57 total tackles.

Joining Markus on the defensive line is Jack Stanton, who missed nine games last season with a broken arm, but made 5.5 sacks in just two games.

“I feel we don’t really have any holes on defense,” Schultz said. “We feel pre-

pared and strong.”

And preparation will be key for the Raiders seeking a third region title in five years.

“We have a very tough schedule and a very tough region,” Nichols said. “We are a few years removed from our last region championship, and that’s what we want to fight to get back to.”

“We have high expectations and those expectations are to compete for championships.”

The Hornets are coming off two straight 14-1 seasons, have not lost a regular season game since Halloween of 2014, and have sent over a dozen players to Division 1 programs, including two Under Armour All-Americans.

Even with an almost entirely new coaching staff and just two returning starters, first-year head coach Matt Kemper knows his team is still expected to win, no matter its inexperience.

“This is Roswell. Our kids and our community expect us to be good and win games,” Kemper said. “It’s part of the beauty and the pressure of a job like this.”

With 22 new starters expected to carry the torch, Kemper is looking for his new leaders to emerge.

“The only way you can help that is working very hard and letting the team find each other,” Kemper said. “We certainly hope that has happened and is happening.”

Roswell’s success of late has been due in part to its stout defense which allowed an average of 10.5 points per game over its last 30 games. Since his hiring in January, Kemper has implemented a three-man front to contrast with the four-man front of the past.

Kemper said to keep legs fresh and pressure on opposing offenses, six players will rotate on the defensive line, including senior Oscar Garcia and sophomore Caden Bondurant.

Milton hungry for success under new leadership Youth dominates roster as team looks to build on mediocre 2016

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton enters its 68th year of football in 2017, making it one of the longest running programs in North Georgia. But history doesn’t always equal success.

In its nearly seven decades of football, Milton has endured long stretches mired in mediocrity, including a 37game losing streak in the mid-1980s and just three winning seasons from 1997-2010.

Things looked brighter in the first few seasons under Howie DeCristofaro, when the Eagles put together three straight winning seasons, won the program’s second region title and earned a quarterfinals appearance in the state playoffs in 2014. But that success didn’t carry over, and the Eagles went 9-11 the past two seasons.

With so many yesteryears ended in frustration, the Eagles are perhaps hungrier than ever for a region title and a deep playoff run. And they think they’ve found the right man for the job of leading the Eagles to greatness – Adam Clack.

Clack takes over the Eagles program after a successful stint with Milton’s region rivals West Forsyth, where he went 20-12 in three seasons.

With a sophomore quarterback, and youth throughout its ranks, the Eagles went 5-6 last season but return much of the same talent, now with an added year of experience.

Under Clack, the offense will run a spread-style scheme, but the new coach said the focus is on maximizing the potential of the personnel.

Leading the charge will be dual-threat quarterback Jordan Yates, who threw for 917 yards and rushed for 433 yards with 14 total touchdowns. “[Yates] has very special leadership qualities and a tremendous work ethic,” Clack said. “He knows our offense well and I feel like he can have a big season.”

Also in the backfield will be running backs Solomon Vanhorse and DJ Albright, Clack calling the duo “a great one-two punch.”

Creating gaps for those backs will be an experienced offensive line, which returns four starters.

“You can’t overstate the value on in-game experience, and those guys are tested,” Clack said. “They’re going to be

Standout receiver Dash Hairston will likely again be Yates’ go-to target.

Hairston led the team in receiving yards and touchdowns in 2016. He will be joined by Kevin Murphy, Holdon Shaw and Dylan Leonard, all of whom are playing well, Clack said.

Milton’s defense will run a 3-5 this season, and like the offense, Clack said the lineman will lead the charge.

“We have a lot of senior leadership on the defensive line, and we are really going to lean on them to create pressure,” Clack said. Justin Blanks, London Best and Juan Uribe, all seniors, will make up the first line of defense for the Eagles.

A far more seasoned team than the youthful 2016 roster, Clack is confident this year could propel the Eagles out of their .500 ways.

“The art of building a team is setting those goals and aspirations and to have the belief you can have that long run do something that’s unprecedented,” Clack said. “But what we must do is dial that back and focus on getting better each day.”

First-year head coach sets sights high

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Centennial head coach Michael Perry won’t be happy with a mediocre “transition” year as he takes over the Knights in his first season as a head coach. He wants a region championship and to put Centennial “on the map.”

Perry certainly has a history of putting programs and players in the spotlight.

An offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with Gainesville from 2011-15, Perry led Gainesville to its only state championship in 2012 and coached perhaps the biggest name in college football in 2016 –Clemson’s Deshaun Watson.

In his sole season at Coffee last year, Perry’s offense led the team to a quarterfinals appearance in the state playoffs, just the third in the program’s

48 seasons.

With a history of getting teams and players recognition statewide, Perry said to put the Knights on the map, the region title must be the focus.

In Centennial’s 20-year program history, the Knights have never won an outright region championship.

They shared a title with Cherokee in 2002, the school’s winningest season.

And though he is new to the region, Perry fully understands the challenge of capturing the region title in the dogfight that is Region 7-AAAAAA. “After our first two non-region games, we immediately have to face Alpharetta and Johns Creek, two really good football teams,” Perry said. “Once we get into region games, we have no time to get better. We have to be playing our best football from the beginning of the season.”

Perry has implemented an air-raid offense for the Knights, perhaps no surprise given his quarterback-based offensive background. He said the offense will go high-tempo and no-huddle.

With a pass-heavy offense, the quarterback is key. For 2017, the Knights will feature a new starter in junior Max Brosmer.

Brosmer steps up to replace graduate Casen Conway who threw for over 2,200 yards and 16 touchdowns last season.

“Brosmer is a heady, intelligent kid who is accurate with a strong arm,” Perry said. “With any new quarterback there are going to be some growing pains, but Brosmer doesn’t make the same mistake twice.”

Brosmer will have a standout target in receiver Blane Mason, who returns for his senior season after leading the Knights in receptions and yards last year.

Perry said Mason has the uncanny ability to get to the ball and is “something to watch.”

But the Knights won’t be a passonly team, Perry said, and leading the rushing attack will be Emeka Nwanze, a transfer from Northview who rushed for over 1,500 yards his sophomore season.

Leading the offense in the trenches will be 6-foot-2 junior center Will Edwards.

The Knights’ defense can also look to a new scheme as Perry has implemented a 3-5-3. He said the goal of the scheme will be to ensure stopping the run while pressuring the opposition’s quarterback.

“You’re going to see guys flying all around the ball,” Perry said.

After a standout year as a freshman in 2016 where he led the team in tackles, sophomore linebacker Max Able returns to lead the Knights defensively.

Able will be joined by fellow linebackers David Gaffney and Drew Sherman and corners Malcom Gallagher, Freddy Fairley and Mason.

One of the state’s best lacrosse players will strap up for football this season when Nicky Solomon will handle kicking duties for the Knights.

With the team transitioning to new schemes, Perry has a transition of his own – being a head coach.

“The biggest challenge for me is having to worry about the whole program and find that balance,” Perry said. “But I’m working on it and getting better every day.”

And he will need to if the Knights are going to capture their first region title.

Cambridge program built upon unity, grit Bears family attitude has bred success

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Sixth-year Cambridge head coach Craig Bennett talks about his team as one often speaks of beloved family members. He uses terms like “joy” and “pleasure” to describe his time with players. He speaks of their fortitude and perseverance like a proud parent and never fails to mention the most important aspect of his job is not winning games, but building relationships.

And he’s seen that as the reason for Cambridge’s success on the field.

“Over the years as our program developed, the kids responded well to all they went through,” he said. “Our kids have a lot of grit, and in the daily grind of a high school season in Georgia, seeing how these kids respond and the relationships you build, that’s the joy in coaching.”

For Bennett’s seniors and juniors, the grit Bennett speaks of came through the adversity of going 7-3 two straight years and still being locked out the playoffs due to playing in a Class 5A sub-region.

“Going 7-3 and not making the playoffs was a hard thing to swallow,” Bennett said.

CRAIG BENNETT Cambridge head coach But after a move to Class 6A last season, the Bears finally overcame the playoff hump, earning their first trip to the postseason.

And Bennett said now that Cambridge has made that step, they refuse to move backward.

Besides grit and a family-atmosphere, the cornerstones of the Cambridge program has been physical play, and this year will be no different.

“We are typically undersized, but we play tough,” Bennett said.

The offense will continue to establish the run this season and will do so with a new running back and two new starting lineman.

Standout running back Kaelin Byrd, who rushed for over 1,400 yards last season and 23 touchdowns, has graduated. In to fill that role will be senior Matthew McCree. “[McCree] has done a really great job this summer and credits Byrd with mentoring him last year on what it means to be the go-to guy,” Bennett said.

McCree racked up 311 yards rushing on just 32 carries last season.

Cambridge will also look to a new starter at quarterback in Hogan Dykes.

Though Dykes is inexperienced, Bennett said he has done a phenomenal job of taking over the starting role this summer.

“We’re excited about him,” he said.

“He is a smart kid who studies the game, is big at 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds and has an accurate arm with the ability to run. He brings a lot of tools to our backfield.”

He averaged 9.7 yards per carry on 32 rushes in 2016. time, and each has a unique skill set, Bennett said.

The offensive line returns three of five from last year, including four-year starter Kasra Bojnordi.

Seven returners, including three at linebacker and all of Cambridge’s secondary, will line up more seasoned.

The Bears started five freshman in their playoff game against Mays last season.

In returning multiple starters on both sides of the ball, Bennett said experience should pay dividends for the Bears this season.

“The kids knowing what we’re doing and the experience they have brings confidence,” he said.

Bennett’s team is also more sea-

soned in their region after moving in last year.

“You have to be prepared week-in and week-out,” he said. “To be competitive, we have to be the best we can be.

And we don’t talk about where we want to be at the end of the season or how many games we want to win. We talk about getting better each day.”

And though they face a daunting task in their region schedule, Bennett knows his “family” should have success.

“We’ve been competitive with those teams even when the talent-pool is stacked against us,” he said. “If they work hard they’ll have a chance. And it’s special to coach kids like that.”

Chattahoochee strives to ‘be elite’ in 2017 Cougars look to improve on 5-5 season

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The mantra for Chattahoochee head coach Vince Strine and his team this season is “be elite,” challenging the Cougars to reach for the pinnacle in all they do.

To lead a team aiming for greatness will be an elite coaching staff, the best Strine has been a part of, he said.

“We have a lot of guys who have a lot of years’ experience coaching, and we have a lot of young guys who are very energized and knowledgeable,” Strine said. “We have two former head coaches and some former players, so these guys coach with a greater purpose. Hooch matters to them.”

The Cougars’ coaching staff will lead a team hungry for success after narrowly missing out on a playoff berth last year after three straight losing seasons.

Running Hooch’s spread offense will be quarterback Jack Corrigan, in to replace graduated standout Chase Owens.

A state champion as a goalkeeper in soccer, Corrigan is a fierce competitor, Strine said.

“That’s what I really like about him,” Strine said. “He demands excellence from the players around him.”

Corrigan saw some playing time last year with an injury to Owens, compiling 429 yards with three touchdowns.

Strine said the senior has improved his throwing mechanics and is a physical runner.

Last year’s leading runner Joseph Daniels transferred to Roswell, opening the running back position for Max Webb and Marcus Stephen. Webb brings speed, while Stephen is a powerful runner, Strine said.

A weakness is year’s past has been Hooch’s offensive line, but Strine said this year’s squad is bigger and stronger and he expects “big things” from his starting five.

Hooch will have five or six receivers who will rotate, including safety Joseph Sayles and receiver Hunter Patterson.

Strine said the offense will play to its strengths, but the biggest difference

in this year’s team is its ability to get the ball in the hands of a variety of players.

For the Cougars’ defense, Strine said a focus for this season will be to play with more comfort.

“The past few years the kids have been afraid to mess up and are robotic,” Strine said. “We want to be confident in what we’re doing.”

Leading a strong secondary will be Sayles and corner T Lee, who has garnered interest from multiple Division 1 schools after his sophomore season.

Brenden Huet, Danny Gladwell, Bobby Spradlin will lead the linebacker core with Anway Jackson heading the defensive line.

Getting Hooch to elite status is in the development stages, Strine said, with a focus on improving each day.

“The buzzword is ‘process’ around the college and NFL ranks, and I believe in that,” he said. “Our guys are grinders, hard-workers and fun to be around. They’re developing into a brotherhood and playing for each other.

When you play for each other you play better. This team is learning to do that and we are watching them develop in a positive way.”

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — This season will mark West Forsyth’s first under head coach Shawn Cahill, a former offensive coordinator at Lanier and Harvey High in North Dakota.

Joining Cahill is new offensive coordinator Chad Davenport, who led Northview as head coach from 201016. Cahill and Davenport had coached together previously at Peachtree Ridge.

Cahill, who employed a run-based offense at Lanier, said he was impressed with Northview’s passing game, and wanted to implement Davenport’s scheme with his own.

“I told [Davenport] we want to keep the running game from Lanier, but I liked what you did with the passing and getting the ball out quick at Northview,” Cahill said. “Because he and I have such a good relationship, we’re both just trying to get our kids in the best position to be successful.”

In addition to a new offensive scheme, Cahill brings a “play both ways” mindset to West, which senior Cade Vela has appreciated.

“With coach Cahill, he really overlooks all sides of the ball,” Vela said.

“In adapting us to playing both ways, it allows us to develop as players.”

Vela has made the move from safety to cornerback, just one of two returning starters on what will be an inexperienced West defense.

Junior Abraham Camara will step into the starting role at safety with Malachi Claiborne joining Vela at cornerback.

Ryan Wnek, 6-foot-3, 190-pounds, will start at outside linebacker with Jacob Weldy starting as inside linebacker.

West’s offense returns more starters, but it will be led by a new quarterback in senior Bryce Jones.

Jones takes over for Kiernan Hamilton who passed for nearly 2,500 yards and 26 touchdowns last season. Jones went 11-22 for 119 yards with a touchdown. Jones said West’s new offense will highlight the offensive squad’s strengths.

“We think [the new offense] is going to fit our personnel well,” he said.

“They’ve really made an offense that fits who we are and what we have.”

Jones will have a go-to target in returning receiver/tight end Ben Bresnahan, West’s leading receiver in 2016. Senior receiver Zach Burns, who caught 47 passes for 633 yards last year, also returns.

Clay Crocker will likely lead the rushing attack for West behind an inexperienced offensive line.

Titans unified under new head coach James Thompson enthusiastic about first year

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — According to first-year Northview head coach James Thompson, unity is the only way you win games.

His focus in the offseason has been changing the culture for the Titans, creating a family atmosphere and putting an emphasis on having fun.

His players have taken notice.

“It’s a whole different aspect when you like your coach,” said starting quarterback Colton McDaniel. “It’s more personal to play for someone you care for.”

Defensive lineman Kadeem Shabazz said, “Last year we got down on each other and played the blame game, but now we’re in this together.”

Thompson said the unity of the Titans’ and their reception to him in his first year has been amazing.

With a decade of coaching experience at the high school and collegiate level, Thompson said, “I’m having more fun coaching now than I think I ever have.”

Northview certainly didn’t have much fun last year, struggling to a 1-9 season after two consecutive playoffs berths. But now, among the players and coaching staff is a palpable excitement for the 2017 season.

A major factor in the spike in enthusiasm is the Titans’ newly implemented, pro-style offense.

Leading the new look will be returning starting quarterback McDaniel, who Thompson describes as a mobile, efficient competitor.

McDaniel is ready to lead the new scheme.

“It’s more dangerous,” he said. “We have a lot more ways we can move the ball and be successful. And it’s very adjustable.”

Last season’s leading rusher Emeke Nwanze has transferred to Centennial, opening the role for Farid Nana-Yeboah and Will Caylor.

Providing gaps for its rusher and protection for McDaniel will be a young offensive line, but it’s one that Thompson said has been working well as a unit.

McDaniel will have go-to receivers in Mac Bolton, Colin Ferguson, Christian Watson and Kane Siebold.

“We are able to do more offensively with how intelligent these kids are,” Thompson said. “I have more offense

Defensively, the Titans will operate out the 3-4 but have multiple looks.

The Titans will look to Shabazz on the defensive line and linebackers Connor Hint and Zach Billings to lead the defensive front.

Kicker Mike Owen, who Thompson called “fantastic,” returns.

Thompson isn’t one to make predictions, but he expects his unified team to compete well this season.

“What I’m concerned with is our team,” he said. “How we stack up is unknown, so we are going to take everything play by play. I feel confident we have turned a corner, now it’s just about execution.”

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A year after winning the program’s first region title, Johns Creek will have a new look in 2017. The Gladiators will be under new leadership in head coach Matt Helmerich and will have a slew of young players making their starting debuts.

The Gladiator’s offense only returns a few starters, but that’s still far more than the defense, which returns none.

But in his short time at the helm, Helmerich says though his team lacks starting experience, the Gladiators’ talent runs deep.

“We have a lot of young talent that is enthusiastic and wants to work,” Helmerich said. “We still have talent up and down the roster, we’re just young in certain areas.”

Much of that talent resides in the offense’s few returners, all at skilled positions.

Quarterback Zach Gibson returns after his standout sophomore season to lead the Gladiator’s spread offense. He will have a go-to and highly-touted receiver in Zach Williams, who has gathered interest from 22 college programs.

“I don’t think teams will be able to limit Williams as much as they think they can,” Helmerich said.

The Gladiators also have a number of talented slot receivers, including Tommy Tremble.

Where the offense lacks experience is on the line, which will see just one returning starter and no seniors.

“They are undersized, but they are the hardest working group on the field

each day,” Helmerich said. He hopes the line will be “clicking” when Johns Creek begins region play.

That line will be creating gaps for running back Nate Hope.

It’ll be all new on the defensive side, and the Gladiators have been filling the entire starting roster.

Helmerich will use a 3-3 stack and multiple coverages in what he calls an undersized, but fast and aggressive defense.

Johns Creek will also be inexperienced in its kicker after consistent and powerful Jake Friant graduated. The Gladiators will call on a soccer player and first-year football player, for its kicking duties.

“As a young team, our goal is to get better each week, but there’s enough talent on this team to win quite a few games this year,” Helmerich said.

Johns Creek’s inexperienced team will have little time to come together – the Gladiators open their season against two 7A opponents in Lassiter and North Forsyth.

“On paper, Lassiter might be the most talented team we face all year, and they’re week one,” Helmerich said.

“Follow that with North Forsyth right out of the gate and its certainly going to be an early test.”

The challenging opening games of the season will expose any weaknesses and show the team what they need to work on, Helmerich said.

The Gladiators will then have a bye week to make those adjustments before starting Region 7-AAAAAA play, where they will look to defend their region title.

“It’s a pretty balanced region,” Helmerich said. “I think we can beat any team, and any team can beat us.

We’ve got to bring our ‘A’ game every week.”

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Under Tim McFarlin, Blessed Trinity has gone 61-17-1, has captured four consecutive region championships and has made a playoff appearance in all his seven years with the program. But BT’s defense, a key to the Titans’ success under McFarlin, will have a new look this year under new defensive coordinator John Thompson.

After retiring from coaching at the collegiate level where he was on the staff of 10 Division 1 programs, Thompson has decided to get back in the fray of football and lead the Titans’ newly implemented scheme.

“We were very fortunate to pick up coach Thompson,” McFarlin said. “He spent his whole career at the college level and he welcomed the opportunity to come coach in high school.”

Out of a 4-3 base, the Titans will use multiple looks.

Most of last year’s defense – which gave up an average of 19 points per game despite a challenging schedule – will return, including the entire secondary.

Linebackers Jake Rudolph and JD Bertrand, some of BT’s top tacklers last season, also return.

BT’s defensive front four will feature some new faces due to graduations.

Raleigh Barden, who missed much of last season due to an injury, may miss the Titans’ first two games, but he should be cleared to play by the end of the month.

The offense returns key skilled players, but will have a new front-five with three standout lineman from the 2016 roster lost to graduation.

Quarterback Jake Smith returns after a successful sophomore season where he compiled 1,569 yards with 16 touchdowns. He will be joined in the backfield by running back Steele Chambers who rushed for just under 1,500 yards with 21 touchdowns.

Three defensive starters – Jake Rudolph, JR Bivens and Mickey Skole – will share time at fullback.

After leading the Titans in receptions, yards and receiving touchdowns in his sophomore season, Ryan Davis will once again be a go-to target for Smith. McFarlin said the offseason has also seen the emergence of senior

Junior Ethan Chauvin will step up to replace consistent and powerful kicker Brooks Hosea, now at West Point.

“Ethan has had a really good summer and we think he will do well in that role,” McFarlin said.

With his retuning players and new starters, McFarlin said he hopes to continue the tradition of “hard-nosed” football at Blessed Trinity.

“When all is said and done, I don’t think much about what our record will be,” he said. “We are going to focus on the ceiling of our players. However far that takes us, I don’t know, but we want to look back and say we went as far as we could go.”

The Titans will see where they stand in the early going of the season with another schedule featuring a demanding non-region schedule.

BT will take on rivals Westminster, who defeated BT in overtime in the 2015 Class 3A state championship game, as well as St. Pius X to open the season. They then take on two teams in a higher classification in Marietta and Creekview before ending non-region play against Tennessee powerhouse McCallie School.

“We will absolutely know where we stand after our non-region games,” McFarlin said. “It will get us battle tested.”

BT will then turn its attention to capturing a second straight Region 7-AAAA title.

“You have to go through Marist, which is a great program, West Hall is always good and White County has a new coach,” McFarlin said. “We know we’ll have our work cut out for us but we’re looking forward to it.”

Fellowship Christian faces high expectations after historic 2016 Paladins return after best year in program history

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Everyone loves a good underdog story. Playing the part of underdog in 2016 was Fellowship Christian.

The Paladins entered the 2016 season having not put together a winning season in nearly a decade. They had gone 14-34 in region games in the same span, hadn’t been in the running for a region title, and they were 21-24 all-time against opponents on their schedule.

But in the span of 13 games, Fellowship Christian became one of the most talked-about teams in the state – the underdogs reeling in an unprecedented 13-0 run, which would win them a bid to play for the ultimate prize of a state title.

The Paladins ultimately fell to defending state champs ECLA in a double overtime heartbreaker, but the effects of that improbable season carry into the 2017 season – the Paladins are aiming higher than ever.

“Last year set an expectation,” head coach Al Morrell said. “It was a special year and definitely gave us something to build on.”

With his program thrust into the spotlight after a single season, Morrell said he can’t say if this team will be able to match, or perhaps better, the 2016 squad’s state runner up title, but he’s looking forward to the upcoming season.

“You always set goals high, but a lot of it has to do with your competition and what they have coming back,” he said. “If we can get the same chemistry and confidence we had rolling last year, I don’t know how far we can go, but we are optimistic.”

Though some of last year’s Cinderella squad has graduated, including quarterback and Class-A Player of the Year Jack Hardin, the Paladins return a large core of the 2016 team.

The offense returns three standout offensive lineman, which Morrell calls the key to his Wing-T offense. Guard

Tad Aycock and tackles Mason Russell and Davis Shaw all return, and will be joined by Matt Morton at center and tackle Mason Russell.

“In our scheme, our guards do a lot of pulling and trapping,” Morrell said.

“We have two big, strong kids who also have the ability to run well.”

That offensive line will be tasked with protecting a new starter at quarterback, and Morrell said there is competition between senior Hunter McMickle and junior Brooks Bryant.

Morell said the nod will likely go to the senior, but either way, the Paladins will lack experience under center.

McMickle missed opportunities to gain playing experience last year after breaking his hand.

If he’s passed over for the starting QB job, Bryant will still contribute to the offense as a receiver, where the Paladins also lack experience. Casey Barham, who perhaps caught the football bug after seeing Fellowship’s run last season, will be strapping on a helmet for the first time this season. In his first season of football, Morrell said Barham has shown promise.

Though the “Andrew duo” of Andrew Johnson and Andrew Minkert were lost to graduation, plenty of capable rushers return. Merrick Haigler, making the move from wingback to fullback, will join Cameron Gill at running back and share most of the rushing duties.

Where the offense had many gaps to fill this offseason, the Paladin’s 4-4 defense will return eight starters.

Russell, Shaw and Aycock will man the interior defensive line while Reed Bott and Billy McCurry – who led the team in tackles, sacks and tackles for loss last season – return at defensive end.

“Our defensive front is solid,” Morell said. “McCurry is probably one of the top players in the region.”

But the keys to the defense will be inside linebackers Matthew Curry and Matt Morton, Morell said. The duo combined for 136 total tackles last year.

Safety Cameron Gill and cornerbacks Merrick Haigler, James Milhollin return to the secondary.

Though he can’t say if his 2017 team can repeat last year’s magic, Morell is still confident.

“If each game we can stay healthy and play mistake-free, I know we have a chance to win each game.”

Mount Pisgah returns offensive firepower in 2017 Patriots seeking sixth-straight playoff appearance

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Since its program was founded 15 years ago, Mount Pisgah has enjoyed its most successful stint under head coach Mike Forester, who has compiled a 32-15 record and has made the playoffs all four years since he came on board, what Forester called the goal for each season.

The team will seek to continue its playoff streak this season, as well as capture the program’s second region championship, with a seasoned offensive and inexperienced but promising defense.

Standout senior quarterback Jacob Cendoya returns to lead the Patriots’ offense. He not only led the team in passing yards and touchdowns, he was also the Patriots’ leading rusher, compiling 2,468 yards passing with 22 touchdowns and added 1,169 yards on the ground with 10 touchdowns in 2016.

“Cendoya is an incredible talent,” Forester said. “He loves playing and gives us a spark and enthusiasm.”

Cendoya will get the ball into the

hands of senior receiver Kai Williams, who had 843 yards receiving with 11 touchdowns, including four 100-plus yard games, last year.

Joining Williams in the receiving core will be Jacob Wooten and David Woodward.

The Patriots’ also bring size and experience to the offensive line with 6-foot-3 tackle Chad Peden and 6-foot-5 Connor Getchell leading the line.

Trey Murphy will likely lead the rushing attack for the Patriots who averaged 34 points per game last year.

“We’re hoping our offense is going to be what drives us,” Forester said.

“We’re counting on them to win us quite a few ballgames.”

Mount Pisgah will need to fill more gaps on what Forester called a “young defense,” but he said he has been pleased with his “promising” new starters.

Defensive end Connor Pursell, linebackers Charlie Smith, Jackson Grant and Jonathan Giglia return for the Patriots’ defense.

The Patriots’ allowed an average of 29 points per game in 2016 with one shutout.

With NFL experience, Mathis brings pro-style play to Pinecrest Ex-Falcon settles in for first year at helm

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — Terence Mathis spent 13 years in the NFL, including seven with the Atlanta Falcons, where he played over 200 games and racked up nearly 9,000 yards receiving. He was a Pro-Bowl selection in 1994 and was integral in leading the Falcons to the 1998 Super Bowl.

Needless to say, Mathis has serious NFL experience. He has taken that time and experience at the professional level and implemented an all-new look for the Pinecrest Paladins in 2017.

Gone is the triple-option offense, to be replaced by a pro-style offense which will feature multiple looks. The defense will also run a new scheme, replacing last year’s 3-5 with a 3-4.

Mathis said his team is loving the new systems.

At the helm since mid-May, Mathis hasn’t had much time to implement his new schemes, but said he has already seen significant progress.

“Coming from what they were used to, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how far they’ve come,” he said.

Senior Brooks Binkley said he is on board with the transition.

“On the first day I felt the energy,” Binkley said. “It was easy to transition.”

Leading the new offense will be senior quarterback Micky Mangan.

Mathis said junior Ryan Difazio is also getting equal reps.

Sharing the rushing attack will be Brinkley, Michael Birozes and Hogan Palmer, who Mathis said provides breakaway speed. All will likely see receptions out of the backfield.

The most difficult transition to the new offense has been with the offensive line, Mathis said.

“They’ve been taught power blocking, and now they are being asked to zone block, be more athletic and provide pass protection. If there’s one area that’s a work in progress, it’s the line,” he said.

Mathis will look to junior defensive end Stone Brown to cause confusion for the opposition’s front-five and for inside linebacker Nolan Stafford to stop the run and lead the Paladins’ new defense.

Pinecrest’s new schemes will face a baptism by fire when the team opens

the season against two 7A opponents, South Forsyth and Discovery, before the gauntlet that is Region 6-A. With the schedule in place before his hiring, Mathis said the Paladins won’t use the two non-region games to pad their playoff seed-deciding power rankings — Pinecrest is still out to win.

“I know a lot of high schools play

non-region games to get ready for region games and don’t put a lot of emphasis on them,” Mathis said. “Our philosophy is this – if you’re on the schedule, we’re going to look to beat you.”

“We’re planning to go to South Forsyth and win. It’s not a measuring stick for us,” he said.

King’s Ridge implements triple-option offense Team continues to ‘turn the bus around’

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — A first-year head coach in 2016, the Tigers’ Jimmy Chupp aimed to “turn the bus around” at the King’s Ridge which had gone 1-9 in 2014 and 2015. After a 4-6 season last year, Chupp said that redirection has begun, and will hopefully continue with the Tigers’ newly implemented offense – the triple-option.

While most teams are beginning to move away from the offensive scheme, including region rivals Pinecrest Academy, the Tigers are looking forward to playing with their new look, Chupp said.

“We’re excited about changing the [offensive] plan,” he said. “The kids are working hard on that transition, and the retuning kids have been successful with the change.”

Chupp said the offense’s success will be determined by how much the Tigers’ grow as a unit, with team play crucial to the triple-option.

Last year’s leading passer, rusher and receiver have graduated, leaving openings in skilled positions, but Chupp said this year’s squad looks promising.

Hayden Milling finished out last

season as the starting quarterback over Gresham Shepard, and will likely lead the Tigers’ offense.

Milling should be suited for the new offense. Chupp said Milling is better suited to running than passing.

Though Milling will likely lead the Tigers, Chupp said it will still be

quarterback by committee with Casey Flanagan and Braxton Chadwick also in for snaps.

The backfield will include a trio of Smith brothers, Christian, Thomas and Nick, who will lead the rushing attack along with Kevin Howard, Robby DeFelice and Joshua Stallworth.

Led by 6-foot-1, 240 pound center Parker Lefton, the offensive line has transitioned well to the new blocking schemes, Chupp said.

Leading the receiving core will be Jackson Rich and Evan Dyers.

Six starters will return on defense, including linebackers Kaleb Harris and Nick Smith, who combined for 94 tackles last season. Stallworth and Milling will secure the secondary with seniors Phillip Trainor and Sean Barden returning to lead the defensive line.

Joseph Patti will handle kicking duties this season.

Since the Tigers’ program began in 2008, King’s Ridge has failed to make the playoffs, but Chupp said his emphasis will be on building up his players, and that wins should fall in place.

“We’re looking forward to a great season of building young men,” he said.

“Last year we had a great start to that, and we are looking to build on it.”

St. Francis still young but more seasoned for 2017 Knights look to bounce back from 2-8 season

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The label “young” is often assigned to high school football teams, but perhaps no team in the state was as young as St. Francis last season.

Of the Knights’ entire 2016 roster, only 11 were upperclassmen. That youth and inexperience was revealed when St. Francis struggled to a 2-8 finish in Tim Mathis’ first year as head coach.

Given the team’s youth, many of the Knight’s starters on Fridays had also played in JV games the night before.

But those players earning six quarters of game-time a week should pay dividends this season, Mathis said.

“Last year we were so young, and as a new coach, I was trying to learn my team and they were trying to learn me,” Mathis said. “But now we are

familiar with each other, we learned what worked and what didn’t and we’ve gotten better.”

Mathis’ team will still be young with just four seniors on the roster.

The Knights return all skilled positions on offense and four of five linemen, including Jonathan Pittman who was named All-Region as a freshman last season. Defensively, a majority of starters will be back and more experienced.

St. Francis’ rushing attack will be led by the junior duo of Robert Jones and Sean Paradise. Isiah Wadsworth, the Knights’ top receiver last year, joins sophomore TJ Tampa, football newcomer Jai Smith and senior Caleb Schneider to make up the receiving core.

Finding those receivers will be a new quarterback with the departure of Matt Davis, one of just eight seniors on the 2016 team. Mathis said the Knights’ two scrimmages will determine who gets the starting job between sophomore Sam Hines and junior Nick Kreitner.

Pittman leads an offensive line that Mathis called bigger, faster and stron-

ger than last season.

“After that first year, everyone knows the system, and we definitely have potential on offense and should be very explosive,” Mathis said.

Defensive end Paradise, linebacker Aaron Strozier and safeties Hines and Josh Harps-Zhu will lead the Knights’ defense again this year.

Those returning players not only benefitted from the experience gained in 2016, they are also using last year as motivation.

“We’re still 2-8 until we prove different,” Mathis said. “The kids weren’t satisfied with last season and they are anxious and ready to improve.”

It didn’t help the Knights’ chances last year that seven of the 10 teams they played earned playoff berths.

“In our region you can be beat by anyone,” he said. “It’s such a tough region, but if you can do well, it gives you a great chance to make a run in the playoffs.”

And making the playoffs is the goal for the more mature Knights this season.

Expectations raised for Longhorns Lambert confident for 2017 season

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com SUWANEE, Ga. — Lambert head coach Louis Daniel called the Longhorns’ 2016 season “special.” And for good reason.

Lambert completed its seventh winning season in eight years, captured the program’s first region title and won its first playoff game with a 44-14 drubbing over Central Gwinnett in the first round.

Last year’s season has set the bar higher for the Longhorns.

“Going into this year you keep the same goals,” Daniel said, “but now it’s an expectation.”

With Lambert looking to build on last year’s success, he is confident in his 2017 squad.

“I feel very optimistic. We have a good senior class and some D-1 talent in there, and on that front, we’re the best we’ve ever been. But scholarships don’t win football games. We are going to play hard and continue a good tradition,” Daniel said.

The Longhorns will open the season with five non-region games, including the talented teams of Mountain View, Cherokee and Lanier, a schedule that should prepare the Longhorns to defend their Region 5-AAAAAAA title.

“We really focused on improving in those first five games last year,” Daniel said. “In those games, you may make choices that are not advantageous to your record, which happened to us last year, but it sets you up for those last five games.”

The Longhorns’ offense will aim to improve in the non-region games under new leadership in senior quarterback Bobby Gabriel. “[Gabriel] opens a lot more options on offense,” Daniel said. “He is more of a dual-threat guy.”

Joining Gabriel in the backfield will be returning senior tailback Justin Bruno, who led the Longhorns with 968 yards rushing last season. Fellow seniors Marcus Chatelain and Will Kohlins will also add to Lambert’s rush attack.

Gone is 2016 leading receiver Tyler Gillis, who transferred to Buford, but Lambert will have multiple targets for Gabriel, including tight end Alex Snyder and receivers Michael Wilkins and Jacob Grieser.

look to continue the same game-plan as previous years.

“When you grow up playing the same scheme, it becomes a traditional learning situation,” he said. “We have a tradition and the boys have confidence in it.”

Lambert returns half its starters, but lost its top four tacklers from last season to graduation. Daniel said he expects big seasons from defensive lineman Bryce Chason, David Standeven and Snyder, cornerback Kenneth Dicks III, linebacker Chris Taylor and safety Will Chatelain.

Coming off their first region title, Daniel said he is assured in his team, but that it’s anyone’s championship this year.

“We have quality opponents up and down the schedule,” he said. “You lose the wrong game and you’re bound for second right away,” he said.

The Longhorns will focus on staying healthy and maintaining stability, Daniel said, in order to defend their title.

South Forsyth seeks playoff run in 2017 campaign

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — South Forsyth head coach Jeff Arnette said the War Eagles’ 2016 run of 7-4 was “good,” but it’s not where the team wanted to be.

“Last year, we had higher expectations than what we achieved,” he said.

“It was a good season, but it wasn’t what we were shooting for, and that has fueled our coaches and players through the offseason.”

South’s defense will certainly be using last season as motivation as the group returns nine starters.

Ryan LaFlamme, who led the team in sacks last season at defensive end, returns for his senior season along with fellow lineman Ian Hunt. Linebackers Jack Perhson and Jess Lucas join safety Landon Sims and corner Myles Ellis in South’s seasoned defense.

On offense, 2016 saw multiple injuries to the quarterback position when starter Davis Shanley and backup Cal Morris both went down with injuries, thrusting Cal’s sophomore brother Drew into a starting role for the final three games of the season.

Though Drew excelled in his three games, Cal will be the starter this year.

“We like to have a vocal quarterback who can run and throw it,” Arnette said. “We know what Drew is capable of, but Cal will be starting. He had a great offseason and has done a tremendous job.”

South will also be looking to get more production out of returning back Jared Honey this season. “[Honey] is a physical runner who can block, run

and catch out of the backfield. We have to find ways to get him the ball even more this year,” Arnette said.

Tyler Bowman, who rushed for 314 yards and four touchdowns last season, will add to South’s rushing attack.

Top receiver Ryan Pontrelli also returns after a high-production junior year and will be joined by what Arnette called a “great string of receivers we’re excited about.”

And though South only returns one offensive lineman in Jordan Nelson, Arnette said this year’s line has the potential to be the best South has ever seen despite the lack of experience South has the opportunity to make some noise as soon as the season starts in being selected to play Roswell in the Corky Kell Classic at Georgia State Stadium, formerly Turner Field. The War Eagles also face Centennial, Pinecrest Academy, South Gwinnett and Lassiter before starting their challenging Region 5-AAAAAAA schedule.

“It is an extremely tough schedule against some of the top teams in the state,” Arnette said. “But playing that kind of competition prepares us for the stiff competition in our region.”

South will need to start playing well out of the gate, Arnette said, and that includes when region play starts against Lambert. South will seek a second region title in three years.

“Last year we finished second [in region] and we weren’t happy about it,” he said. “We start with Lambert, which is not only a tough team, but a rival.

It’s anybody’s region but we’re going to be physical out there to compete all season long.”

Central enters 2017 with a chip on shoulder Bulldogs out to make amends for 3-6 season

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — Second-year Forsyth Central head coach Frank Hepler said just a day after the Bulldogs’ 59-0 loss to Lambert on Nov. 3 last year, his team set out to prepare for this season and ‘make amends’ for a season that saw the Bulldogs go 0-5 in its first season in Region 5-AAAAAAA. “We got to play games and learn a lot about the region, but we were not in the mix,” Hepler said.

“Lambert, West, South and North, those are all great programs and each one of them kicked our tails,” he said.

“That’s been the chip on our shoulder all off-season.”

His team was outscored 194-22 in region games in their first year in Class 7A, up from 5A in 2015. But Hepler said last season was a necessary step in making the monumental jump in classification.

“It was a great learning experience for us and we had to take that step,” he said. “We found out 7A football is very good and our county football is very good.”

Now that the Bulldogs’ have seen the talent of teams in 7A, they will look to implement an updated offense.

“The offense we put in last year was a new-program offense, teaching the basics of what we wanted to bring into our program,” Hepler said. “We’ve stepped it up with the improvements we’ve seen.”

Leading the offense is senior quarterback Brad Thiltgen, who said he has improved on his defensive recognition and is “more crisp” in his reads.

Junior Dalton Edmunds and Spencer Pagley will likely be the go-to receivers for Thiltgen.

Changes were in store for the Bulldogs’ defense when their top-four tacklers for last season were lost to graduation. Hepler said the team has built speed at the outside linebacker position by moving safeties Jackson Leak and Hunter Cagle to that spot.

Hepler said the defense will have more depth because his program has gone from 105 players to 165 this year.

“That’s going to help us in the longrun,” he said.

Since his initial stint as a coach in Forsyth County, opening the program at West in 2007, Hepler said the level of football played in the area has improved immensely.

And it stands to reason he hopes his team’s first taste of 7A football, and their county rivals, from the 2016 season will set his team up for a more successful run this year.

“We’re still a young team,” he said, “but we are a lot better.”

Raiders aim to take the ‘next step’ this season North Forsyth head coach looks for playoff finish

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — North Forsyth head coach Robert Craft said last year established the Raiders’ under their new coaching staff. Now that the foundation has been set, North is looking to that next-step – the playoffs.

“I would expect nothing else from our seniors,” Craft said. “I’m proud of their work [in the offseason] and they have done everything they’ve had to do to have a successful year.”

North went 4-6 in Craft’s first season, which set the initial groundwork for a playoff berth this year, Craft said.

“Last year we were a new staff coming in, and I felt in a lot of ways we took positive steps forward,” he said. “It set the foundation for the future, and we are going to continue to dig those roots deep.”

The Raiders offense will continue to run a shotgun, spread offense

with tempo, led by returning starting quarterback Ben Bales. Bales compiled 2,005 yards with 15 touchdowns last season.

“Ben is a great leader and is very coachable,” Craft said. “He has put himself in a position to be a top player in North Georgia. Anytime you return a starting QB it makes the coaches and the team feel more comfortable.”

Craft is expecting a breakout year for junior running back Bryson Trigg, whom he expects will also make receptions out of the backfield.

Others looking to make receptions will have to step up to replace Simon Holcomb, who set multiple school receiving records last year.

Craft said he is excited about junior Charlie Aiken to be the go-to receiver this year. Aiken will be joined by Nicky Dalmolin, who caught 15 receptions as a freshman last year.

But Craft said North’s passing game won’t rely solely on one or two receivers.

“Last year a lot of our offense funneled through [Holcomb]. This year we will be more balanced and spread the ball out,” he said.

The offensive line returns two

starters in guard Daniel Espinoza and highly recruited tackle Jeremy James.

North’s defense will lack experience entering the season, though Craft said the unit is filled with seniors.

“Some played in backup roles or significantly on special teams, but they lack game-night snaps,” he said.

Linebacker Robert Faulkner does bring experience to the defensive side and will be joined by defensive line starters Cade Jensen and Will Chavarria.

Safety Honus Wagner also returns after a breakout sophomore season in which he led the Raiders in total tackles, fumble recoveries and sacks.

Craft said North’s goal for this year is to take the “next step,” in earning a playoff berth, a feat North has accomplished just once in the last six years.

“We did some really good things last year and got a lot of things established,” he said. “But that next step is the playoffs.”

“We have come ready to play, and if we can stay healthy and avoid some things that hurt us last year like turnovers, we should be right back in a position to compete for a playoff spot,” Craft said.

Deluxe garage proposed off McFarland Parkway ‘Man caves’ designed to provide storage for expensive cars

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Builders of a proposed luxury car garage got the green light Aug. 8 to begin the process for the 26-acre property.

Jeff Beal, co-founder and principal partner at Destination Development Partners Inc., said the project will be called The Stables Motor Plaza and will be built at 425 McFarland Parkway.

The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners approved starting the process for two county-initiated rezoning applications.

Beal said the project has two sections, retail in the front and garages in the back.

The retail could consist of a highend car wash, coffee shop, rooftop restaurant and a high-end car dealership.

There would also be an event space for public or private use, as well as a wetlands area that will be maintained similar to a nature center.

Plans call for the back of the property to be gated garage buildings, similar to condominiums, where buyers store their luxury cars.

The clientele targets anyone who owns a luxury car, Beal said. The group performed a study of luxury car owners in and around Atlanta, and found the core area of people who own cars

“When we pulled out the zip codes,

there are 3,500 cars registered north of Atlanta valued at $125,000 or more,” Beal said. “At this location, there are more than 1,700 cars within five miles of this site. You pull from south Forsyth, Cumming, Johns Creek, Alpharetta and Milton. That core group of cars are registered right here.”

Building will have different prices and sizes from 15 feet by 35 feet, up to 40 feet by 35 feet. Prices are still being discussed, but Beal said similar garages charge around $350 per car per

month, but this will cost more because it’ll be more high-end.

The owners may store their cars during the week while they’re at work, and stop by the garages on the weekend to pull out their cars to work on them and have informal car shows with their neighbors. The cars will always go back into the garages overnight.

Occasionally, they may open the gates for the public to view the cars, but the majority of the time it’ll be closed off for the owners.

No one will be allowed to live in the garages, although the areas will start unfinished and the buyers can customize them to their liking.

“Most of these guys have a garage with three to four cars in it,” Beal said.

“They know how they want it and like it.”

Mezzanine areas will be above the car storage areas, so the buyers can install things like bathrooms, pool tables or have an office area.

No businesses will be allowed to operate out of the garages, but car owners can perform work.

“You can come and work on your own vehicle, that’s fine,” Beal said. “But we’re not bringing our neighbor’s vehicle and grease monkey it all day long.

Most of these guys we know who will do this have mechanic skills. But they want someone who’s reputable to work on their vehicles.”

A management company will run the garages, including an owner’s association that will determine rules. A security guard will be the only person allowed to live on-site.

Many of you have done the same thing. I know it. So I’m going to get things started, because we have to: The Falcons lost the Super Bowl in the worst blown lead loss ever.

It was the biggest punch in the gut I’ve ever encountered in sports. By halftime, I knew we had it won. Then I got a text from my mother asking me if I was taking my boys to the victory parade – what a grandmother thing to do by the way. We’re lost in a lifetime of pent-up exuberant celebration and she’s at home imagining her grandsons at the parade.

Anyway – as soon as I saw that text, that’s when I got worried.

Looking back, I’m glad she sent it. It tempered me for what was about to happen.

It pulled me down from the clouds and back on solid ground so I didn’t have as far to fall when everything fell apart. It’s like my mother, who raised her children here, had seen enough Atlanta sports seasons to know that we were setting ourselves up for disappointment.

While others stayed in the clouds, I knowingly watched the Patriots methodically disassemble our hopes and dreams. As soon as the game was over, I gathered my family, walked out of the party we were at and have not mentioned it since.

Well, it’s time to deal with it.

And truthfully, I feel better already.

I’ve read up on them. We are fully blaming Kyle Shanahan, who is now the head coach of the 49ers. Can’t wait for that game.

Teaching entrepreneurship: Learning outside the box Lee Heisman wants millennials to learn craft of ‘next big thing’

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. – There is no greater gathering of business people and entrepreneurs in Roswell than when the Roswell Rotary Club convenes its weekly luncheon. So it was an avid audience of Rotarians who listened last Thursday to Lee Heisman, who runs Savant, a full-service technology company.

He is passionate about entrepreHEISMAN neurship and spoke about entrepreneurism as a subject that should be taught in business school. Speaking to these Rotarians about entrepreneurship is akin to preaching to the choir.

Yet in the Information Age where companies grow up quickly and then die because they can’t adapt (remember Blockbuster?), there is a need for business people to have the skills to adapt, morph or go off in another direction altogether.

That is just what Heisman is doing at Kennesaw State University. There are a lot of great ideas out there, and technology is the fertile ground to make them happen, he said.

“But there are skills people need to acquire to be successful. But once they have them, there is no telling what they can do,” he said.

Heisman grew his company in a new direction when he realized there was a growing need for an IT provider that understood both technology and how that technology should be used on a daily basis to accelerate a business’s growth and productivity.

“What I teach is a mindset,” he said.

It’s not about building one company and making it work, said Heisman. In this day and age it is about building a series of ventures as markets and technologies shift and change.

KSU only Georgia college offering entrepreneurial degree

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmdiagroup.com KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State University is the only college in Georgia that bestows an entrepreneurship business degree and has created the KSU Entrepreneurship Center on campus.

Christopher C. Hanks is the founder and executive director of the Entrepreneurship Center which represents an entirely new approach to preparing students for the business world.

“KSU not only is the only college to offer an entrepreneurship degree in the state, but is one of the very few to offer it in the Southeast,” Hanks said. “A lot of schools offer entrepreneurship classes or entrepreneurship as a minor. But we offer a BBA degree in entrepreneurship.”

Hanks said KSU’s entrepreneurship curriculum takes a unique approach from other colleges.

“We emphasize mindset first, then skillsets.

That is one of the reasons, I believe, that gives us the results we’ve been getting. The information is out there in many forms already.

“You can Google it and get tons of information.

The difference maker is changing the ways students think and act. Then you give them the skills they need to be successful,” Hanks said.

The first course in the curriculum is “The Entrepreneurial Mind.” Its focus is to get students to think like entrepreneurs first. In many ways it sounds simple, but it is about approaching work, your job and even life from a new perspective.

Take jobs for example. The standard mindset is one works and produces x amount of product or service for y amount of wages.

The entrepreneurial mindset is about finding ways to be more useful and valuable to employers and exceed their expectations. In many ways, Hanks said, the idea is to treat the boss like the customer. And the only way to win over the customer is to give a better value.

“So, every day I’m working to exceed my boss’s expectations, I receive more rewards or time off,” he said.

Two things happen with that mindset, KSU has shown. First, entrepreneurial students perform the nuances of a market and finding a niche to exploit – and then find another, and another, he said.

“What we want to do is to turn young entrepreneurs’ dreams into businesses,” he said.

Jacque Digieso, cofounder of The Cottage School, is a disciple of Heisman’s ideas. Students at The Cottage School don’t fit in the cookie-cutter world of public education. Yet shown another way to learn, with a different set of skillsets, they can thrive.

Digieso met Heisman through the work his company, Savant, did at her school. A past president of Roswell Rotary, she recruited him to be a guest speaker.

“When I heard him talk about entrepreneurism being taught in the classroom, I fell in love with idea,” Digieso said. “It is so timely.”

“Today, colleges teach you to go to work for some-

better in the workplace and thus earn 27 percent more after graduation than peer students.

“We have employers lined up to hire our students because they value the way these students think and act in the workplace,” Hanks said. “They strive to exceed expectations.”

Just preaching the mantra of HANKS exceeding expectations is not enough however. KSU courses are designed to create ways for students to experience the rewards of the entrepreneurial mindset. At the core is the idea to treat your boss like your customer. Exceed his expectations.

“We give the students courses that challenge them and also change them. So that even if the go on to a job rather than founding a business, they will be more successful,” Hanks said. “To get students to internalize these ideas, they have to understand why the process works. When they do, they begin to act differently and people perceive them differently.”

The coursework is also about instilling successful skillsets to help students succeed in their endeavors, Hanks said.

Among these skills is the ability to overcome the fear of failure. That is something everyone has, but only a few conquer it to be successful.

How do you discover what you really want and then how do make a plan to get it?

These are tools, not gimmicky platitudes. In entrepreneurial classes students learn to identify and then overcome those fears by finding solutions.

“If it sounds messy, that’s because it is.

Getting there is messy, but if you persevere you will get there,” he said. “But create an action plan and then you hold people accountable, including yourself.”

That’s the question of the week, and I’ve been asked it about a half dozen times in the last few days.

Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net Monday, August 21, is just around the corner, and that’s when you’ll have a chance to experience something that some never see at all – a total eclipse of the sun.

Quite a few of Georgia’s state parks are offering special eclipse events; check out gastateparks.org/ Eclipse2017 for details on what and where. It might be crowded, but it’s sure to be unforgettable.

Will you be viewing this rare event?

I will. But you can bet that I’m going to be sure that I do it safely. Unsafe viewing poses extreme danger to your eyes and can cause permanent damage.

You don’t want that.

How do you safely view an eclipse?

There’s been much talk about this all over the news for the last few weeks, and there’s a ton of eclipse info (viewing and otherwise) on the web too.

NASA weighs in at eclipse2017.nasa. gov, and the American Astronomical Society has great info too at eclipse. aas.org.

Here’s the short version of what they have to say.

As the NASA site points out, “The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as ‘eclipse glasses’ … or handheld solar viewers.”

NASA and many others emphasize that homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun. The only safe ones are eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers which you are certain are compliant with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard for such products.

Here are other important points emphasized by NASA and by the American Astronomical Society: • Always inspect your solar filter before use. If it is scratched or damaged in any way, discard it. Read and follow any instructions printed on or packaged with the filter.

• Always supervise children using solar filters.

• Stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer

The Aug. 21 eclipse will pass directly over some northeastern Georgia cities. before looking up at the bright sun.

After looking at the sun, turn away and remove your filter. Do not remove it while looking at the sun.

• Do not look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical device.

• Similarly, do not look at the sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eye(s), causing serious injury.

• Seek expert advice from an astronomer before using a solar filter with a camera, a telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device. Note that solar filters must be attached to the front of any telescope, binoculars, camera lens, or other optics.

• If you are inside the path of totality, remove your solar filter only when the moon completely covers the sun’s bright face and it suddenly gets quite dark. Experience totality, then, as soon as the bright sun begins to reappear, replace your solar viewer to look at the remaining partial phases.

• If you are outside the path of totality, you must always use a safe solar filter to view the sun directly.

• If you normally wear eyeglasses,

keep them on. Put your eclipse glasses on over them, or hold your handheld viewer in front of them.

An alternative to filters is a pinhole camera-type viewing device.

You’ll find instructions for making and using such a viewer at eclipse2017. nasa.gov/how-make-pinhole-projector-view-solar-eclipse. I built one of them just to try it out, and it works!

And what will I be doing during the eclipse? Well, I’ve always wondered what the fishing is like during a total eclipse. I just might mosey over to my favorite stream and try my luck during those moments of totality.

I’ll be the one with the flyrod in hand – and with the cereal box sun viewer and the ISO-certified glasses too.

Eclipses are neat, but so are my eyes!

Roswell seeking applications for Emergency Response Team ROSWELL, Ga. — The City of Roswell’s Fire Department is accepting applications from residents who are interested in becoming part of the City’s Community Emergency Response Team, a volunteer group of trained community members who will be integrated into emergency response efforts in their area.

The program educates and participants them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. This training will allow members to assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Adults age 25 and up can now experience the city of Roswell’s Adult Aquatics Center.

Starting on Aug. 1, the RAAC— which was previously reserved for participants 50 and older—will expand the age range of those served, as well as extend hours on select days and offer new evening fitness classes.

The city is still committed to providing dedicated services to its 50+ population at the RAAC, said Jeff Pruitt, Interim Director of the Roswell Recreation, Parks, Historic & Cultural Affairs Department.

The decision to extend hours on Tuesday and Thursday (to 8:30 p.m.) and Saturday (to 6 p.m. for lap swim only) came about because the center has not been heavily utilized by 50+ participants during those times. Those hours are convenient for participants wanting to use the RAAC after work.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Hundreds of families poured into Zoo Atlanta after hours June 3 to celebrate their babies.

Miracle Babies Party, presented by the Northside Hospital Foundation, is held annually at Zoo Atlanta with admission free to anyone born at the hospital. The celebration includes a reunion of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurses and the babies — now toddlers — they once cared for.

Among the sea of strollers this year, 42-year old Roswell resident Miracle Brooke reflected on her own connection to families and babies there.

Miracle was born in 1975 weighing just over one pound. She required a specialized team of NICU nurses and doctors to care for her around-the-clock for four months before her body and organs were developed enough to function without support from equipment.

Survival rates for babies born that small is 26 percent, but Miracle, with the help of her care team and her mother, beat the odds. That’s how she got her name.

Today, Northside Hospital Foundation raises money to provide financial assistance and support for families with newborns in the hospital’s NICU. Proceeds from the sale of refreshments and souvenirs during the Miracle Babies Party at Zoo Atlanta benefit this cause.

Local rowing club places in national competition ROSWELL, Ga. — The St. Andrew Rowing Club Men’s Lightweight Four recently placed sixth at the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championship.

The championship was held June 9-11 in Sarasota, Fla. It is the premier junior rowing event in the United States, drawing nearly 1,500 athletes from over 150 teams from across the country.

The boat qualified for nationals with a second place finish at U.S. Rowing Southeast Regionals in May. To earn a spot in the Grand “A” Finals, the boat first successfully raced in time trials followed by a third place finish during

semi-finals. The St. Andrew boat was the only boat in the Atlanta area to make it to Grand Finals this year.

St. Andrew’s Lightweight Four was comprised of Jerod Bayly of Sequoyah High School, Nick Patterson of Walton High School, Dylan Tanasijevich of Walton High School, Brice Hudson of Cambridge High School, coxswain Jordan Katz of Walton High School and alternate AJ Hall of Cambridge High School. Roswell native inducted to U.S. Gymnastics Hall of Fame ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell High School and University of Georgia graduate Jay Clark was recently inducted into the U.S. Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

After graduating from UGA, Clark worked as assistant coach with the Lady Gym Dogs, coaching the uneven bars and handling all the recruiting. He served as head coach at Georgia from 2009-2012. He then went to Louisiana State University as associate head coach where he coaches all events with emphasis on the uneven bars.

In 2011, Clark was named ninth best recruiter in college athletics by “ESPN The Magazine.” Clark has earned several awards, including the 2001 USAG State of Georgia Coach of The Year, 2006 National Assistant Coach of The Year and 2017 NCAA Assistant SPECIAL Coach of The Year, among others.

Jay Clark has helped Clark is known as a coach, recruiter and a strong UGA’s gymnastics team voice in the sport of women’s gymnastics. During his win multiple awards.

20 years on UGA’s coaching staff he helped guide the Gym Dogs to seven NCAA National Titles and 14 Southeastern Conference Championships. Mars rover draws hundreds to North Point Mall Young, old flock to see futuristic Mars explorer

He’s extraterrestrial.

Yes, NASA’s 23-foot-long Mars Rover is a sleek and powerful concept vehicle sponsored by the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex to showcase how American astronauts will motor around Mars.

Visiting North Point Mall last Saturday, hundreds of visitors stood in line to see the prototype with its detachable science lab-trailer.

The Rover looked futuristic indeed.

It’s all part of the Summer of Mars to promote interest in NASA’s long-range space dream and whet the appetites of kids who may one day pilot the vehicle over the red, sandy Mars surface.

NASA Tour Manager Dana Jondahl has spent the summer touring the East Coast from New York City to Northpoint Mall and points in between – including the Smithsonian National Air and

Space Museum.

“I couldn’t tell you how many visitors we’ve had since the tour began.

But I can tell you it’s been pretty popular,” Jondahl said. “People have flown to cities on our tour just to see it.”

While the vehicle is only a prototype, it gives a fair idea how it will navigate Mars’ sandy soil.

And it has a detachable science lab through which scientists will be able to collect samples of rocks and soil for study and perform other experiments, Jondahl said.

She noted that no taxpayer money is involved in the creation of the prototype Rover. It was fully funded through proceeds from the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

“It’s commissioned as an educational tool,” Jondahl said. “But I just love seeing the kids run around dressed in space suits. One little girl came dressed as a space princess.”

The girl dubbed the vehicle “Sally’s Ride,” after the first U.S. female astronaut in space.

Jondahl said the tour’s mission is to “inspire and educate.” After this, the Mars Rover’s last stop, she said they could stamp it mission accomplished.

Miss Mary’s Ice Cream Roswell hosts Homeschool Day Crankin’ returns Aug. 27 ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell Square Park will once again host the annual Miss Mary’s Ice Cream Crankin’, the signature fundraising event for The Drake House, from 2-4 p.m. Aug. 27. This year’s event is presented by BurgerFi who has teamed up with the agency to offer a fundraising match on the day of the event.

The 13th annual Ice Cream Crankin’ brings together local businesses, civic, faith and friend groups for an old fashioned ice cream social, offering over 100 flavors of home-made ice-cream to ticket holders. ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell Convention and Visitors Bureau and “A Southern Trilogy: The Historic House Museums of Roswell” will host a Homeschool Day for homeschool students Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall and Smith Plantation will be open for tours. Demonstrations and handson activities will be held at all three house museums so students can experience life in the 1800s.

Grant helps seniors with pets provide food for animals ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Meals on Wheels Loves Pets is a grant program from Meals on Wheels America aimed to help ease the cost of pet ownership and keep pets and seniors together. Senior Services North Fulton, a nonprofit that has been supporting older adults in the North Fulton community since 1991, received a $2,500 grant from Meals on Wheels America to help grow this program.

Volunteers meet the first Friday of every month at the Senior Services North Fulton office in Alpharetta to sort 30 days’ worth of pet food and deliver it to their clients.

Michelle Williams is the Volunteer Program Manager for Senior Services North Fulton and oversees the Meals on Wheels for Pets program.

“We started the program in 2013

and currently deliver food to 74 pets - we have cats, dogs, two turtles and a gecko,” Williams said. “These pets are the only family some of our clients have. Without the support of this program many of these animals would end up in local shelters.”

In total, Meals on Wheels America has granted $300,000 to 193 Meals on Wheels programs through the Meals on Wheels Loves Pets initiative this year. Funding is made possible in part through a donation from Banfield Charitable Trust. To date, the grant program has distributed more than $2.4 million in funding and pet food donations.
