Fake closing attorney takes buyer for $15,000 ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A woman in the process of purchasing a house was scammed out of $15,000 May 22 by a suspect impersonated a closing attorney. The woman said she had received a call from someone claiming to be the closing attorney confirming the date and time for closing on the house. The caller then said she’d email instructions for wiring the money. An hour later, the woman received the mail and followed instructions to wire $15,000 to an unknown account for someone living in Illinois. The woman later became suspicious of the interaction and contacted police. When police contacted the real closing attorney, she said that she had never spoken to the woman about a wire transfer. The company, she added, only conducts transfers through their website. The closing attorney also told police that there had been four to five similar cases in the past three weeks, but most of the clients were able to identify the fraudulent behavior before transferring the money. The woman contacted her bank to

The couple had failed to make contact with their family. The rangers located the boat anchored off the Three Sisters Island chain within Forsyth County. After failing to make contact with
the couple, the rangers boarded the boat and found the two deceased in the front cabin area. The cause of death is believed to be carbon monoxide positioning, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. Nothing is definitive until the autopsy is completed. The case is still under investigation. Foul play is not suspected.

Grandmother loses $18,000 to grandson impersonator ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A woman contacted police May 29 after her daughter helped her realize that she had been scammed out of $18,000. On May 23, the woman received a phone call from someone claiming to be her grandson. He said that he was locked up in downtown Atlanta for a DUI. While she was speaking to the man, another man, who called himself “Walter,” came on the phone claiming that he could help her grandson if she sent $8,000 to bail him out. The woman said that she was so convinced by the story that she agreed to send cash inside a FedEx shipping envelope overnight to a man in Florida. Two days later, the woman received another call from “Walter” who said that he had more bad news related to her grandson. He said that he would need another $9,500 because her grandson had apparently broken another man’s nose and ribs. The woman complied with the request. That same day, “Walter” called the woman again and said that he would need an additional $6,000. But this time, the woman said that she could not afford to pay any more fees. “Walter” said that he would see what he could do and hung up. The woman tried “many times” since
Grandmother loses $4,200 in fake arrest scam JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman was swindled out of $4,200 when she was convinced by callers that her granddaughter had been arrested after a car crash and needed help. The woman said that at 9 a.m. on May 16, she received a phone call from a woman claiming to be her granddaughter. The caller said that she had been in a car cash, was arrested and needed help. She then passed the phone to a man who said he was a lawyer assisting her. The fake lawyer convinced the woman to buy six $700 gift cards from Sam’s Club and read off the numbers to him. After the woman did so, she was once again contacted by a different man who said he belonged to a law firm representing her granddaughter and that she needed to purchase another $3,000 in gift cards. This time, the woman did not comply and instead called her granddaughter to see whether she had been in an accident. She had not. The woman called Sam’s Club about the incident, but employees told her that there was nothing they could do at that point. She contacted police to file a report.

New community prosecutor targets drug epidemic By CONNER EVANS interns@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Fulton County Tag Office hosted a meet and greet May 30 to introduce Bailey Rogers, the new Fulton County community prosecutor. Rogers has worked as a criminal prosecutor for more than 10 years ROGERS in Atlanta, where she focused on the opioid epidemic and gang activity in the community. Rogers works with local police officers, helping them build cases, coordinate jurisdictions and build relationships between “white collars” in the District Attorney’s office and uniformed officers on the ground.
But she said that there are some common misconceptions about her position. “I’ve had people call me after getting arrested and ask me to represent them,” she said. “Some people don’t get that I’m not a free attorney — I’m a community prosecutor.” One way Rogers is trying to combat the opioid epidemic is by providing officers with Narcan pens that can save individuals who overdosed. The statistics on opioid use are tough to track, she said, because even while overdose rates are decreasing, Narcan use has increased. And precise numbers for Narcan use and sales can be difficult to find because they are now sold over the counter. Rogers said she has had to ask local CVS stores individually how many Narcan pens they sold to get an estimate for the area. Although people tend to think of drug
problems as isolated to Atlanta, drug operations can happen even in the affluent suburbs of Roswell or Alpharetta. And opioids in particular have become such a problem in the area that large portions of North Fulton have become known as the “Heroin Triangle.” But those are not the only kinds of drugs making their way into the suburbs. Just recently, a mother in Sandy Springs was arrested for making THC pens in her home, Rogers said. She was only discovered because her child called the police. Several other officials from the district attorney’s office at the meet and greet shared similar goals as Rogers in trust-building to help prevent gang activity. Deputy District Attorney Keith Lamar, who joined the office in 2012, said he works to build trust between law enforcement and teenagers by talking
with students at local high schools and middle schools. “When I was younger I might have said ‘eff the police,’” he said. “But now, I can’t say that after being behind the scenes. No matter what you see on the news with cops, that’s really just one guy out of a lot. There’s going to be bad guys anywhere.” Ian Elmore-Moore, who previously worked at a mentorship program and now works as a gang prevention and intervention coordinator for Atlanta, said that work with the youth has been incredibly rewarding. “Getting a million dollar grant is really big for these programs,” he said. “Helping 20 kids at a mentor program is still great, but there’s more I can do here even if it’s less hands-on.” To learn more about Rogers and to get in touch with her, visit atlantafultoncountyda.org.

Gilvin, who resigned from the City Council in February, joined new council members Karen Richard and John Hipes to fill seats vacated early this year.
“It feels fantastic,” Gilvin said after gaveling his first meeting to a close. “I think we’ve got a good council and a clear direction out of the last election. I think we’re going to work well together to take care of other people’s business.” Throughout his campaign for mayor, Gilvin emphasized his commitment to controlling growth – not only in the future, but over the course of his six years on the City Council.

He used that mantra to distance himself from his opponent in the race, former Councilman Chris Owens. Gilvin won the May 22 election, garnering 53 percent of the 7,230 votes cast. For the new mayor and some council members, the election represented a sea change in the attitude the city will take on development. Alpharetta’s staggering growth over the past six years rivals anything else in Metro Atlanta. The city has seen a long-abandoned field next to Ga. 400 converted into one of the region’s premier retail tourist destinations. It has teamed with that development to construct a conference center, offering 44,000 square feet of flexible event space, including 10,000 dedicated square feet of exhibit space. It has attracted a campus for Gwinnett Technical College to help supply a workforce for a growing tech industry. It has expanded the healthcare footprint in the city. And, it has transformed a crippled downtown into a burgeoning hub of retail, residential and entertainment. Overall, the city’s economic outlook has seldom looked better. In the past six years, more than 12,000 technology jobs have been added, and vacant office inventory has dipped to 11.9 percent. All along the way, Gilvin often provid-
ed the only “no” vote on the City Council when developers came calling, especially those seeking zoning changes to add apartments or other high-density residential. Gilvin lost most of those fights, and his election comes months after the last large piece of downtown property available for residential was approved for a high-density development. Nevertheless, Gilvin has reason to believe the City Council he presides over will be different. Both new members, Richard and Hipes, spent time on the Alpharetta Planning Commission and are familiar with the recent history of the city’s development. They also both professed an adherence to controlled growth, again distancing themselves from the recent surge in high-density, mixed-use developments. The swearing in ceremonies for the three new officials occupied most of the May 29 meeting. Mayor Pro Tem Donald Mitchell welcomed the newcomers and thanked the other three sitting council members for helping him navigate the city’s business over the past three months. “I love it when the voters decide what direction they want to go in,” Mitchell said. “That’s always helpful.” The City Council was scheduled to meet this week to address a number of zoning issues and continue work on the 2019 budget.

Roswell Police share summer safety tips By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Summer is heating up, but that’s no reason to relax your guard, police say. Representatives from the Roswell Police Department met May 31 with Roswell Rotary Club members to give an update on their department and provide summer safety tips for residents, whether at home or out of town. Summer tends to be the time that people go on vacation and let their guards down, but that doesn’t mean that crime takes a break, police said. Several types of scams become more prominent during the summer months, according to Officer Sam Wolfson. Some of the biggest scams people
report in Roswell are related to fraud. The department has seen several cases where someone receives a call from a suspect claiming to be an agent with a police department, IRS or other government agency, often threatening the victim with arrest if they do not pay them money. The suspect will frequently ask for money to be sent through prepaid cards, such as Green Dot cards or iTunes gift cards. Police and other such agencies will never ask for any sort of fee to be paid in such a manner, Wolfson said. Scammers also frequently impersonate a loved one and claim that they need money to get out of jail or some other sticky situation. It’s not uncommon for the scammers to research the victim’s family through Facebook or other social media sites to obtain information that
sounds legitimate, Wolfson warned. People might also encounter contract or repair scams, especially after hazardous weather, where the scammer will ask for money upfront or offer cheap services but will not deliver. Be wary of such situations, research any potential contractor and protect yourself with a contract, Wolfson said. The City of Roswell requires any solicitors to have a permit from the city and show the permit prominently when going door-to-door. Some groups such as Girl Scouts and campaign volunteers are exempt. When in doubt about suspicious activity, from strange solicitors to an unknown vehicle circling the neighborhood at an odd hour, call the police, Wolfson said. He also provided several tips for vacationers to protect themselves and their house while they are gone. Some commonly shared advice includes avoiding large cash withdrawals while vacationing, avoid wearing flashy clothing that might make you a target for robbery, checking hotel reviews and alerting your bank before traveling. During the Rotary Club meeting, Roswell Police Chief Rusty Grant also took a moment to provide updates about the department. Overall, there has been a 3 percent decrease in crime rates in the City of Roswell over the past year, Grant said. The city’s recently passed budget has also been a boon to the department as it has created four new positions that had been greatly needed, Grant added. And, the department is currently hiring.

Local high school sports: Why I need a vacation I believe there is no better area in the state to be a high school sports journalist than North Fulton and Forsyth County. Unless you are a lazy sports journalist, that is. In this area, you JOE PARKER can expect so many Reporter joe@appenmediagroup.com great games each week your head will spin. You can expect that the first round of the playoffs will contain more teams than you can count, and you are nearly guaranteed that a local team will be in state championship contention in every sport. Flip through this publication and
you will find an article highlighting the 2017-18 season for North Fulton and Forsyth County programs. Local teams captured 19 state championships, 12 state runner-up titles, and 25 athletes won individual state titles in swim and dive, track and field and wrestling. It is a truly remarkable area to cover, with standout athletes, sharp coaches and strong fan support at every school in nearly every sport. And, it is a very tiring area to cover. The season starts in July as we ramp up for the start of football, softball and volleyball season. Those sports are still going strong when basketball, wrestling and swim and dive begin. Then comes the busiest time of year. With winter sports still wrapping up, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, golf, tennis and track and

field all kick off. And as stated earlier, you can expect at least one, but more often than not many, teams making deep playoff runs on their way to the state finals. Though sports overlap constantly throughout the year, I understand the GHSA schedule is about as good as it can be. But if I could make a suggestion, perhaps the implementation of a mid-year “sports journalist” week where no sports are played to help us keep our sanity. That said, I still look forward to game day. Having attended hundreds of local games, I still get excited when two teams are duking it out and exchanging blows. Chills still descend my spine whenever the crowd roars in celebration. I feel the adrenaline surge when the band and drumline fire up the crowd. And the smell of hamburgers grilling and buttery popcorn almost provide an olfactory home away from home. I truly love what I do, but I will also enjoy the summer months. When schools are out of session, I can finally relax a little bit. There are no more Friday night football games to attend, then hurry home and have the article and a recap of all other local games on our website. There are no more baseball doubleheaders, volleyball

In summer, my weekends are suddenly open. My nights are filled with a whole lot of doing nothing. And finally, I can take a well-deserved vacation. But truth be told, I know in a few weeks I’m going to be itching to get back into it. I’m going to miss the Friday night lights, the echoing of a basketball bouncing off the hardwoods, the punch of a fastball hitting a catcher’s mitt, the roar of the crowds and the sights and smells of local high school sports. Because this is the best place in Georgia to be a high school sports journalist.

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The 2017-18 GHSA athletics year was filled with thrilling comebacks, last-second wins, underdogs slaying Goliaths and tightly contested battles. With another year in the books, here are some of the most thrilling contests from the season. Appen Media has compiled, in no particular order, its best games of the year for North Fulton and Forsyth County team sports. Lambert 15, Centennial 14 (boys lacrosse semifinals) For the second straight year, Lambert and Centennial met in the boys lacrosse playoffs with a berth in the state finals at stake, leading to a thrilling, overtime battle between two of the top programs in the state. In the high-intensity contest, Lambert opened a 9-4 halftime lead, but the Knights came fighting back in the second half. Centennial eventually tied the game at 10-10 before taking a 13-11 lead with just over six minutes remaining. With both teams exchanging blows, Lambert pulled to within one goal in the final minute and forced overtime on a goal with just seven ticks remaining on the clock. In the sudden death overtime, Benny O’Rourk scored the game-winning goal to send the Longhorns to the state finals. Northview 61, Coffee 57 (girls basketball state quarterfinals) Northview earned its second straight trip to the final four on Feb. 27 against Coffee, but not before staving off a fourth-quarter comeback from the Trojans. The Titans led by 12 entering the final period, but Coffee forced multiple turnovers and tied the game with just three minutes remaining. Both teams battled through missed shots over the next two minutes with Northview clinging to a one-possession lead. The Titans looked to ice the game in the final 60 seconds, but in front of a hostile traveling Coffee crowd, Northview missed four free throws, keeping the Trojans within striking distance. With 30 seconds left, Coffee looked for the tying 3-pointer. After missing on the first attempt, Coffee retained possession as the crowd collectively held its breath for the second attempt. The second 3-point attempt also missed, and Northview’s Maya Richards gathered in
the rebound to ice the game and secure the thrilling win to advance the Titans to the semifinals. Blessed Trinity 21, Cartersville 17 (second round football playoffs) In order to reach their eventual 2017 football state championship, Blessed Trinity first had to get past the two-time defending state champs Cartersville, who entered their contest against the Titans riding a 41-game win streak. Undaunted, the Titans scored a goahead touchdown in the final minute to end the Canes’ remarkable winning streak. BT led 14-3 at the half, but the Canes scored two unanswered touchdowns to claim a 17-14 lead. In the fourth quarter, Cartersville looked poised to extend their lead, but a Canes receiver had the ball punched out of his hands near the goal line and BT recovered. Though they were forced to punt, the Titans were back on offense after stopping Canes quarterback Trevor Lawrence, at that time the nation’s top QB recruit. The Titans drove to Cartersville’s 26yard line in the final minute. Jake Smith rolled to his right and connected with receiver Ryan Davis with 12 seconds left for the game-winning score. Milton 2, Roswell 1 PKs (girls soccer quarterfinals) No North Fulton rivalry can compare to the history and love-to-hate sentiment of Roswell and Milton. On May 4, the rivalry that spans nearly seven decades had one of its most exciting recent chapters with the Hornets and Eagles meeting in the Class 7A girls soccer quarterfinals. With their seasons on the line, both teams played with fervor throughout the contest, but the match remained in a scoreless deadlock until Milton broke through with a go-ahead goal in the 69th minute. Facing elimination at the hands of their rivals, Roswell upped its pressure and forced overtime with a goal in the final minute. Riding the momentum of their thrilling tying goal, the Hornets came out shooting in overtime. Though the Hornets put multiple shots on goal, they were unable to find the back of the net and Milton held on to push the game to PKs. In the shootout, Milton’s Alexandra Bicknell made three saves to give Milton the 3-2 advantage to win and keep their eventual state runner-up season alive. Alpharetta 34, Centennial 31 (football, Sept. 9) Alpharetta football earned their

games of the year fourth region championship this season, and it all started with a thrilling comeback win over Centennial in the Raiders’ region opening game. Centennial’s high-powered offense came out swinging and opened a 24-7 lead in the second quarter. Alpharetta chipped away at the lead over the next two quarters but still trailed by a touchdown in the final minutes. Facing a fourth-and-two in their own territory, Raiders quarterback Matthew Downing kept the ball on a zone read, found a seam along the sideline and scrambled 65-yards to tie the game with under three minutes remaining. On Centennial’s ensuing possession, cornerback Jaycee Horn intercepted a pass and returned it to the Knights’ 14yard line with just 34 seconds remaining. With just three ticks left on the clock, the Raiders called a timeout to set up Dylan Schorr’s 21-yard, game-winning field goal to complete the stirring comeback. Chattahoochee 2, Cambridge 1 OT (boys soccer finals) Chattahoochee and Cambridge boys soccer met twice in 2018, and each time
a championship was at stake. In the regular season, the two programs met for the de-facto Region 7-AAAAAA title, with Cambridge ending Hooch’s 33-game region win streak for the title. But on May 12, Hooch earned their revenge by denying Cambridge its first state championship in an overtime thriller. Battling in a scoreless stalemate, Chattahoochee broke through with the go-ahead goal with just eight minutes remaining. However, Cambridge used a fortuitous bounce to force overtime. In the final minute of regulation, a deflecting Hooch clear careened off a player, landing near Cambridge’s Ryan Walker. With just 28 seconds remaining, Walker scored the tying goal to force overtime and keep the Bears’ state title hopes alive. Though the Bears had scoring chances in the first overtime period, it was Hooch who netted the eventual game-winning goal. In the first overtime period, Hooch scored on a corner with a Ryan Kapper header to earn the Cougars their second straight state championship.

Local schools rank among state’s top athletic programs By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Each year the Georgia Athletic Director’s Association awards the top athletic programs in each of the state’s eight classifications, and this year many of the Director’s Cup trophies will reside in local schools. Lambert, Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Blessed Trinity were all awarded for their athletic programs in boys and girls play. A points system is used to determine the winners. Each school is awarded points based on its eight best performing sports during the athletic year. In Class 7A, Lambert was named the best overall athletics program. It is the fourth-straight year the Longhorns have taken the top spot in the state’s highest classification. The Longhorns captured state titles in boys soccer and boys lacrosse and earned four state runner up finishes to lead Class 7A’s 48 schools. The boys programs topped all schools in the classification, and the girls placed second. Lambert finished ahead of Milton, who placed second overall. The Eagles were led by state championships in boys cross country, coed cheerleading, girls lacrosse and a state runner up finish by the girls soccer team. South Forsyth placed 28 points behind Milton as the third best overall program.
South earned two state championships in boys tennis and cheerleading and two runner up titles in girls cross country and boys soccer. In Class 6A, Alpharetta’s 2017-18 season was not only its best in program history, it was the best in the state. The Raiders won their first Director’s Cup as Class 6A’s top overall program. Alpharetta captured the girls soccer state title and finished as state runner up in volleyball and boys track and field. The Raiders were also boosted by deep playoff runs in baseball, boys soccer, football and top-10 finishes in boys and girls swimming. The Johns Creek girls program earned the top spot in Class 6A, leading the school to third in the overall standings. The Gladiator girls swim and golf teams placed as state runner up, while the volleyball, soccer and tennis teams earned trips to the quarterfinals. The Johns Creek boys were led by two state championships in tennis and golf. Blessed Trinity narrowly missed out on being named the best overall program in its class for the fourth-straight year, falling just 52 points short of Marist. However, the Titan boys earned the title of best boys program in Class 4A. BT earned the football and lacrosse state championship and were second in tennis to lead the Titans. The BT girls captured the 4A/5A swimming state title and the lacrosse program won its third consecutive state title to finish second in the girls standings.

She also began a new family wedding tradition by pinning into her bridal bouquet the favorite brooch of each of Joanna’s and Ryan’s four grandmothers, in honor of or in loving memory of them. Joanna is a 2013 graduate of LaGrange College, in LaGrange, Georgia, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree, with double majors in English and Theatre. Joanna received a Master’s Degree (M.A.T.) in English Education from the University of Georgia at Athens in 2016. This fall, she will begin her third year of teaching English in North Fulton County. Ryan graduated in 2011 from Columbus State University, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. He received a Master’s Degree (M.Ed.) in Curriculum and Instruction from LaGrange College in 2015. Following graduation, Ryan taught in Gwinnett County. He is currently working on a degree in the medical sciences professional field to become a Registered Nurse. After returning from a honeymoon in England, France, and Italy, the happy couple resides in Johns Creek, Georgia, with their four fur-babies--two dogs, Penny and Pepper; and two cats, Monica and Chandler.

WellStar breaks ground on new Avalon Health Park By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Construction is underway on a new one-stop health center in Avalon. On June 4, WellStar Health System held a groundbreaking ceremony for the WellStar Avalon Health Park – a facility that will house both primary and specialty physician practices. Medical practices and departments will include cardiac diagnostics, OrthoSport Physical Therapy, urgent care, pediatrics, lab outreach services and OB/GYN. It will be located at 2450 Old Milton Parkway, Alpharetta. “WellStar is always seeking innovative ways to increase patient access to
world-class healthcare, and we have found our network of health parks to be very successful at doing just that,” said Joe Brywczynski, senior vice president of WellStar Health Parks Administration & Development. “We are thrilled to bring this innovative, one-stop shop for outpatient healthcare services to patients and families of Alpharetta as it will complement the variety of WellStar outpatient and inpatient services in the area, including WellStar North Fulton Hospital located just a few miles away.” The two-story, 40,000-square-foot facility is expected to see over 80,000 outpatient procedures and patient visits in the North Fulton area its first full year of operation. It is expected to create 5075 new jobs.
The total cost of the project is approximately $15 million, and its completion is scheduled for summer 2019. “WellStar North Fulton Hospital has been a fixture in this community for years,” said Jon-Paul Croom, WellStar senior vice president and president of WellStar North Fulton Hospital. “The opening of the WellStar Avalon Health Park creates a wonderful opportunity for patients and consumers to experience the high-quality care they have come to expect at the hospital in an outpatient setting.” WellStar is one of the largest health systems in Georgia and includes 240 medical office locations and 11 hospitals. A new mobile app makes connecting
information between these offices and hospitals easier for patients. “With WellStar Connect, our electronic medical record platform, a patient’s medical record follows them wherever they go across the system,” Croom said. “[It] is available to the patient online and on our mobile app.” The Avalon center is one of five WellStar Health Parks. Existing health parks are located in Acworth, East Cobb and Vinings, while construction is already underway for the Cherokee Health Park at Holly Springs.
