Couple found dead on boat on Lake Lanier

Fake closing attorney takes buyer for $15,000 ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A woman in the process of purchasing a house was scammed out of $15,000 May 22 by a suspect impersonated a closing attorney.

The woman said she had received a call from someone claiming to be the closing attorney confirming the date and time for closing on the house. The caller then said she’d email instructions for wiring the money.

An hour later, the woman received the mail and followed instructions to wire $15,000 to an unknown account for someone living in Illinois.

The woman later became suspicious of the interaction and contacted police.

When police contacted the real closing attorney, she said that she had never spoken to the woman about a wire transfer. The company, she added, only conducts transfers through their website. The closing attorney also told police that there had been four to five similar cases in the past three weeks, but most of the clients were able to identify the fraudulent behavior before transferring the money.

The couple was found at 8 p.m. after Georgia Department of Natural Resources rangers were called to do a welfare check on a 24-foot Bayliner cabin cruiser boat. The couple had failed to make contact with their family.

The rangers located the boat anchored off the Three Sisters Island chain within Forsyth County.

After failing to make contact with

the couple, the rangers boarded the boat and found the two deceased in the front cabin area. The cause of death is believed to be carbon monoxide positioning, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Nothing is definitive until the autopsy is completed.

The case is still under investigation.

Grandmother loses $18,000 to grandson impersonator ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A woman contacted police May 29 after her daughter helped her realize that she had been scammed out of $18,000.

On May 23, the woman received a phone call from someone claiming to be her grandson. He said that he was locked up in downtown Atlanta for a DUI. While she was speaking to the man, another man, who called himself “Walter,” came on the phone claiming that he could help her grandson if she sent $8,000 to bail him out.

The woman said that she was so convinced by the story that she agreed to send cash inside a FedEx shipping envelope overnight to a man in Florida.

Two days later, the woman received another call from “Walter” who said that he had more bad news related to her grandson. He said that he would need another $9,500 because her grandson had apparently broken another man’s nose and ribs. The woman complied with the request. That same day, “Walter” called the woman again and said that he would need an additional $6,000. But this time, the woman said that she could not afford to pay any more fees.

“Walter” said that he would see what he could do and hung up.

Grandmother loses $4,200 in fake arrest scam JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman was swindled out of $4,200 when she was convinced by callers that her granddaughter had been arrested after a car crash and needed help.

The woman said that at 9 a.m. on May 16, she received a phone call from a woman claiming to be her granddaughter.

The caller said that she had been in a car cash, was arrested and needed help. She then passed the phone to a man who said he was a lawyer assisting her. The fake lawyer convinced the woman to buy six $700 gift cards from Sam’s Club and read off the numbers to him. After the woman did so, she was once again contacted by a different man who said he belonged to a law firm representing her granddaughter and that she needed to purchase another $3,000 in gift cards.

This time, the woman did not comply and instead called her granddaughter to see whether she had been in an accident.

She had not.

The woman called Sam’s Club about the incident, but employees told her that there was nothing they could do at that point. She contacted police to file a report.

Alpharetta government now running on all cylinders After three months, City Council seats have all been filled

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Three months after he left the dais at Alpharetta City Hall, Jim Gilvin returned May 29 – this time as mayor.

Gilvin, who resigned from the City Council in February, joined new council members Karen Richard and John Hipes to fill seats vacated early this year.

“It feels fantastic,” Gilvin said after gaveling his first meeting to a close. “I think we’ve got a good council and a clear direction out of the last election. I think we’re going to work well together to take care of other people’s business.”

Throughout his campaign for mayor, Gilvin emphasized his commitment to controlling growth – not only in the future, but over the course of his six years on the City Council.

He used that mantra to distance himself from his opponent in the race, former Councilman Chris Owens.

Gilvin won the May 22 election, garnering 53 percent of the 7,230 votes cast.

For the new mayor and some council members, the election represented a sea change in the attitude the city will take on development.

Alpharetta’s staggering growth over

the past six years rivals anything else in Metro Atlanta.

The city has seen a long-abandoned field next to Ga. 400 converted into one of the region’s premier retail tourist destinations.

It has teamed with that development to construct a conference center, offering 44,000 square feet of flexible event space, including 10,000 dedicated square feet of exhibit space.

It has attracted a campus for Gwinnett Technical College to help supply a workforce for a growing tech industry. It has expanded the healthcare footprint in the city.

And, it has transformed a crippled downtown into a burgeoning hub of retail, residential and entertainment.

Overall, the city’s economic outlook has seldom looked better. In the past six years, more than 12,000 technology jobs have been added, and vacant office inventory has dipped to 11.9 percent.

All along the way, Gilvin often provided the only “no” vote on the City Council when developers came calling, especially those seeking zoning changes to add apartments or other high-density residential. Gilvin lost most of those fights, and his election comes months after the last large piece of downtown property available for residential was approved for

Nevertheless, Gilvin has reason to believe the City Council he presides over will be different.

Both new members, Richard and Hipes, spent time on the Alpharetta Planning Commission and are familiar with the recent history of the city’s development. They also both professed an adherence to controlled growth, again distancing themselves from the recent surge in high-density, mixed-use developments.

three new officials occupied most of the May 29 meeting.

Mayor Pro Tem Donald Mitchell welcomed the newcomers and thanked the other three sitting council members for helping him navigate the city’s business over the past three months.

“I love it when the voters decide what direction they want to go in,” Mitchell said. “That’s always helpful.”

The City Council was scheduled to meet this week to address a number of zoning issues and continue work on the 2019 budget.

Council considers metered parking on Canton Street

entertained the idea of converting the current free parking into metered parking to help open the spots up to more use.

Parking spots that would be affected include the 15 spaces on Canton Street, across from Pastis and Mac McGee, and the 21 spaces on Elizabeth Way, between Go With The Flow and the Heart of Roswell Park.

“The council has been kicking this around as part of the growing parking movement in Roswell,” said Councilman Sean Groer. “This [idea] has generally been well received by the business owners on Canton.”

The idea is to increase parking turnover so people don’t park all day or even overnight in one spot, Groer said.

It would free up spots and, in turn, drive more business.

This discussion comes on the heels of a council vote in April to adopt a parking fee schedule for the new East Alley parking lot, which holds 18 spots behind Zest and Ceviche. The fee schedule varies slightly depending on the time of

day. The first two hours of parking prior to 6 p.m. is free, with fees capping at $16 for more than 5 hours. Details on a proposed fee schedule for other Canton Street and Elizabeth Way parking spots have not been discussed yet.

The parking registration device could be compatible with the ParkMobile app, the same app used for parking at Ponce City Market that could also be used with other parking spots along Canton Street as a pilot program, Groer said.

Councilwoman Marie Willsey said she was concerned about how metered parking would be enforced.

Staff members said that the city would have to adopt a new ordinance to nail down those details.

Other details to iron out if the council goes through with metered parking include establishing how the money collected at the kiosk would be used.

The council plans to collect more information and meet with ParkMobile to get more details about the feasibility of more metered parking before discussing the topic again.

Roswell Council passes $144M budget

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The city’s budget for fiscal year 2019 passed May 29 without much fuss after reviewing the second reading.

Only one change was made from the first reading two weeks prior: the addition of $14,200 in funding to help support the Bike Roswell festival.

Both the change and the adoption of the FY19 budget passed unanimously by the council.

The approved budget is $144 million, up almost $2 million from last year. The budget is based on a 4 percent increase in property values.

The council did not make any changes – additions or deletions – discussed at the last council meeting, most of which passed nearly unanimously. Councilman Marcelo Zapata voted against adding funding to many of the city’s partner organization, saying that he wanted to

see more accountability from the organizations and more participation from the city on the organizations’ boards.

But this time, the vote on the budget was unanimous.

“Even though I do not agree with the adds and deletes approved two weeks ago by my fellow council members,” Zapata said, “I still think that Mayor Lori Henry and the staff members put together a reasonable, basic budget that will allow and continue a very good level of service and investments in infrastructure in the City of Roswell.”

Highlights from those additions and deletions include adding $174,000 to support partner organization such as the Roswell Arts Fund, the Roswell Historic Beautification Project and Roswell Inc. Other major votes included adding $500,000 to improve Ga. 9 connectivity, reducing funding for Sun Valley Phase 3 engineering by $400,000 and removing $296,000 for the River Parks Master Plan.

Millage rate still undecided While Fulton County residents should have received updated property assessments by now, city officials must still wait to receive word on overall property values in their cities. Without a value digest, cities like Roswell cannot set a tax rate – or mill levy – on property.

The digest is expected to be available to cities in the first week of June.

Roswell’s current millage rate, 5.455 mills, has stayed the same since Fiscal Year 2009. One mill brings in $1 for every $1,000 of taxable value.

Initial reports indicate a potential median countywide increase in property values of 28 percent, according to the city’s budget manager Harpreet Hora.

The jump is in part because 2017 property values were rolled back to 2016 levels by the Fulton County Commission last year after many homeowners complained of spikes in their assessments.

The city plans to discuss the millage rate and hold a public hearing “at a later date” once more information is available, Hora said.

A similar delay occurred last year when property values were rolled back.

Reeves wins 5th term on Fulton School Board

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Katie Reeves will retain her long-held seat on the Fulton County Board of Education, after fending off a challenge from retired teacher Tom Pemble for the District 1 seat.

First elected in 1999, Reeves will be sworn in for her 5th four-year term on Dec. 31. Pemble, who serves on the Milton High School Governance Council, ran a strong campaign, picking up much of his support in the Milton area. His platform of smaller school sizes, school security and support for teachers resonated with many voters.

But in the end, Reeves won easily – garnering 5,000 of the nearly 8,500 votes cast. She credited her victory to

Local high school sports: Why I need a vacation I believe there is no better area in the state to be a high school sports journalist than North Fulton and Forsyth County. Unless you are a lazy sports journalist, that is.

In this area, you JOE PARKER can expect so many Reporter joe@appenmediagroup.com great games each week your head will spin. You can expect that the first round of the playoffs will contain more teams than you can count, and you are nearly guaranteed that a local team will be in state championship contention in every sport.

Flip through this publication and you will find an article highlighting the 201718 season for North Fulton and Forsyth County programs.

Local teams captured 19 state championships, 12 state runner-up titles, and 25 athletes won individual state titles in swim and dive, track and field and wrestling.

It is a truly remarkable area to cover, with standout athletes, sharp coaches and strong fan support at every school

in nearly every sport.

And, it is a very tiring area to cover.

The season starts in July as we ramp up for the start of football, softball and volleyball season. Those sports are still going strong when basketball, wrestling and swim and dive begin.

Then comes the busiest time of year.

With winter sports still wrapping up, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, golf, tennis and track and field all kick off. And as stated earlier, you can expect at least one, but more often than not many, teams making deep playoff runs on their way to the state finals.

Though sports overlap constantly throughout the year, I understand the GHSA schedule is about as good as it can be. But if I could make a suggestion, perhaps the implementation of a mid-year “sports journalist” week where no sports are played to help us keep our sanity.

That said, I still look forward to game day. Having attended hundreds of local games, I still get excited when two teams are duking it out and exchanging blows.

Chills still descend my spine whenever the crowd roars in celebration. I feel the adrenaline surge when the band and

drumline fire up the crowd. And the smell of hamburgers grilling and buttery popcorn almost provide an olfactory home away from home.

I truly love what I do, but I will also enjoy the summer months.

When schools are out of session, I can finally relax a little bit. There are no more Friday night football games to attend, then hurry home and have the article and a recap of all other local games on our website. There are no more baseball doubleheaders, volleyball tournaments, girls basketball games followed immediately by the boys or soccer games stretching into penalty shootouts.

In summer, my weekends are suddenly open. My nights are filled with a whole lot of doing nothing. And finally, I can take a well-deserved vacation.

But truth be told, I know in a few weeks I’m going to be itching to get back into it. I’m going to miss the Friday night lights, the echoing of a basketball bouncing off the hardwoods, the punch of a fastball hitting a catcher’s mitt, the roar of the crowds and the sights and smells of local high school sports.

Because this is the best place in Georgia to be a high school sports journalist.

Family Promise hires new executive director

By CONNER EVANS interns@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — Family Promise of North Fulton and Dekalb recently announced Andrea Brantley as its new executive director.

Family Promise is a nonprofit organization that provides weekly accommodations for the homeless through partnerships with local churches and other congregations. Unlike many other organizations that separate boys from their mothers at age 12, Family Promise works to keep families together.

Brantley previously worked as director of marketing and fund development for Center for Children and Young Adults in Marietta and was selected as Family Promise’s new director for her expertise in fundraising and special events.

“We needed someone who didn’t want to do social services for the new executive director position,” Board President Gerald Aldridge said. “We needed someone more focused on fundraising, community partnership and management.”

Brantley said her goal is to raise awareness and partner with more congregations.

“Homelessness isn’t just in the city,”

she said. “It’s right in our own backyard, and people need to know that.”

Brantley said 40 percent of students in Dunwoody qualify for reduced price lunches, showing that low-income situations exist in affluent areas and schools.

Family Promise provides about 14 people a week with shelter, food, showers and job preparation. They work with the structurally homeless, those experiencing homelessness for the first or only time in their lives.

The organization also tries to track the progress of guests after they leave, but this can prove to be difficult, Aldridge said.

“We can only keep up as much as people allow us to,” he said. “People staying here are often at the lowest point of their lives and don’t always want to look back.”

However, Brantley says success stories are important and there have been some guests who stay involved with the organization to provide inspirational examples for others.

Family Promise will host a gala with the theme “Point of Light” on February 16, 2019 at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, an event Brantley wants to make a tradition. The “Point of Light”

Another championship year for local schools Local teams capture 19 state titles, 25 individual championships

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The 2017-18 GHSA athletics season marked another remarkable year for local athletics and ensured North Fulton and Forsyth County retain their status as a state hotbed for athletics.

During the year, 19 local teams won state championships and 12 finished as state runner up.

In addition, 25 athletes won individual state titles in wrestling, track and field and swim and dive.

The titles continue an impressive streak for the area. A North Fulton school has won a state championship in at least one sport every year since 1995.

Forsyth County has earned at least one state title since 2011.

With the wide range of spring sports ending in May, it is no surprise that the month saw an influx of state titles to the area. Over half of the area’s team state championships were captured last month.

In soccer, six local teams earned berths in the state championships, with the Alpharetta girls and Chattahoochee and Lambert boys winning titles in their respective classifications. Lambert downed crosstown rivals South Forsyth in 7A finals, and Chattahoochee beat fellow North Fulton team Cambridge in the 6A title game.

This year marks the most state soccer titles won by North Fulton and Forsyth County teams.

Previously, only the 2012 Lambert boys and Milton girls had won titles in the same year.

Just a week after the soccer finals, five local teams battled for lacrosse state titles.

Blessed Trinity earned the Class A-5A sweep with their boys and girls crowned state champs. For the girls, it was their third straight and the boys’ first in program history.

Lambert met Lassiter for the third straight year in the Class 6A/7A boys finals. Lambert completed its undefeated (22-0) season to capture the title, their

fourth since 2011.

The Milton girls continued their dominance over the entire state, winning their 12th state championship in 14 years.

Since the GHSA recognized lacrosse as a state championship sport in 2005, local teams have won 24 state titles.

Also in May, Johns Creek area schools continued their dominance in golf.

The Johns Creek boys team captured its third straight state championship on May 22.

The Northview and Johns Creek girls finished as state champion and runnerup for the second straight year, with the 2018 title going to the Titans.

While the Johns Creek boys continued their run of titles, Lambert girls golf saw its impressive streak come to an end.

The Longhorns fell short of their sixth-straight state title this year, placing third in Class 7A. For the second consecutive year, a Forsyth County boys tennis team lifted

a state title trophy with South Forsyth winning its program’s first championship. The Johns Creek boys and Northview girls also won 6A titles. In all, 13 local tennis teams made berths in the quarterfinals.

In track and field, the Alpharetta boys fell just short of giving North Fulton its first team state championship since Roswell’s in 1961.

However, 11 individual state championships were won from athletes representing Milton, North Forsyth, West Forsyth, Roswell, Alpharetta, Centennial, Johns Creek and Mount Pisgah.

Kai Williams of Mount Pisgah captured three titles in the 100 and 200-meters and long jump.

In other spring sports, local schools were denied baseball state championship rings but Alpharetta and Blessed Trinity reached the semifinals.

Despite five teams earning football state championship berths in 2015 and 2016, North Fulton teams went without a state title.

Police share summer safety tips

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Summer is heating up, but that’s no reason to relax your guard, police say.

Representatives from the Roswell Police Department met May 31 with Roswell Rotary Club members to give an update on their department and provide summer safety tips for residents, whether at home or out of town.

Summer tends to be the time that people go on vacation and let their guards down, but that doesn’t mean that crime takes a break, police said.

Several types of scams become more prominent during the summer months, according to Officer Sam Wolfson.

Some of the biggest scams people report in Roswell are related to fraud.

The department has seen several cases where someone receives a call from a suspect claiming to be an agent with a police department, IRS or other government agency, often threatening the victim with arrest if they do not pay them money. The suspect will frequently ask for money to be sent through prepaid cards, such as Green Dot cards or iTunes gift cards.

Police and other such agencies will never ask for any sort of fee to be paid in such a manner, Wolfson said.

Scammers also frequently impersonate a loved one and claim that they need money to get out of jail or some other sticky situation. It’s not uncommon for the scammers to research the victim’s family through Facebook or other social media sites to obtain information that sounds legitimate, Wolfson warned.

ask for money upfront or offer cheap services but will not deliver.

Be wary of such situations, research any potential contractor and protect yourself with a contract, Wolfson said.

The City of Roswell requires any solicitors to have a permit from the city and show the permit prominently when going door-to-door. Some groups such

“You mention his name in any of the annals of law enforcement, and they know who you’re talking about.”

Kraus previously served as a United States Marine. In 1979, when he was 22, Kraus was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Tehran when it was attacked, and Kraus was taken hostage by Iranian militants. He was tortured and sentenced to death before his release was secured.

Kraus later on went to serve over 20 years with the City of Roswell Police Department as a crime scene investigator and detective.

“He really brought a level of professionalism to our forensic program that just wasn’t there before,” said Roswell Police Chief Rusty Grant.

Roswell Mayor Lori Henry presented Kraus with a key to the city in thanks for his years of service.

Wise also presented Kraus with a proclamation by Secretary of State Brian Kemp thanking him for his service and honoring Kraus as an “outstanding Georgian citizen.”

“I am truly humbled,” Kraus said. “My whole life has been about service... It has been a privilege and an honor – I’ll never forget that.

And I’m glad to be back in Roswell.”

He also provided several tips for vacationers to protect themselves and their house while they are gone.

Some commonly shared advice includes avoiding large cash withdrawals while vacationing, avoid wearing flashy clothing that might make you a target for robbery, checking hotel reviews and alerting your bank before traveling.

services. Wolfson also advised getting mail and any paper or magazine subscriptions held during vacation so as not to alert anyone that the house has been unguarded for a while.

During the Rotary Club meeting, Roswell Police Chief Rusty Grant also took a moment to provide updates about the department.

Overall, there has been a 3 percent decrease in crime rates in the City of Roswell over the past year, Grant said. The city’s recently passed budget has also been a boon to the department as it has created four new positions that had been greatly needed, Grant added.

And, the department is currently hiring.

New community prosecutor targets drug epidemic

By CONNER EVANS interns@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Fulton County Tag Office hosted a meet and greet May 30 to introduce Bailey Rogers, the new Fulton County community prosecutor.

Rogers has worked as a criminal prosecutor for more than 10 years in Atlanta, where she focused on the opioid epidemic and gang activity in the community.

Rogers works with local police officers, helping them build cases, coordinate jurisdictions and build relationships between “white collars” in the District Attorney’s office and uniformed officers on the ground.

But she said that there are some common misconceptions about her position.

“I’ve had people call me after getting arrested and ask me to represent them,” she said. “Some people don’t get that I’m not a free attorney — I’m a community prosecutor.”

One way Rogers is trying to combat the opioid epidemic is by providing officers with Narcan pens that can save individuals who overdosed.

The statistics on opioid use are tough to track, she said, because even while

overdose rates are decreasing, Narcan use has increased.

And precise numbers for Narcan use and sales can be difficult to find because they are now sold over the counter.

Rogers said she has ROGERS had to ask local CVS stores individually how many Narcan pens they sold to get an estimate for the area.

Although people tend to think of drug problems as isolated to Atlanta, drug operations can happen even in the affluent suburbs of Roswell or Alpharetta. And opioids in particular have become such a problem in the area that large portions of North Fulton have become known as the “Heroin Triangle.”

But those are not the only kinds of drugs making their way into the suburbs.

Just recently, a mother in Sandy Springs was arrested for making THC pens in her home, Rogers said. She was only discovered because her child called the police.

Johns Creek permanently adds Vietnam memorial replica

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — City staff announced May 22 that Johns Creek will become the permanent home to a beloved memorial replica.

The city will permanently house “The Wall That Heals,” a 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. the monument, created to honor the more than three million Americans who served in Vietnam, bears the names of over 58,000 men and women who died in that conflict.

“The City Council and I are thrilled that our community has been awarded ‘The Wall That Heals,’ and we are looking forward to adding it our already impressive Veterans Memorial Walk,” said Mayor Mike Bodker.

“From being named a ‘Purple Heart City,’ to the many veterans activities that take place throughout the year, Johns Creek prides itself as a patriotic community that supports and honors our veterans.”

The wall replica visited the city from March 29-April 2, 2017.

It is part of a program of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization that built The Wall in Washington. The organization recently retired the replica after displaying it at over 250 cities across the nation over the course of 10 years.

When they decided to retire the replica, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund staff gave cities the opportunity to bid on the project to own it permanently. Johns Creek was successful in bringing it home.

The city’s $80,000 proposal included a full maintenance plan and calls for it to be housed in its Veterans Memorial Walk in Newtown Park. The bid was made possible by the Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau and through a donation by local residents John and Cori Davenport.

Cori, a former city councilwoman, and her husband were also the largest donors to the city’s four-acre Veterans Memorial Walk.

“We greatly appreciate all that the Davenports do to support our veterans and to help the City of Johns Creek demonstrate our deep respect and gratitude for those who have served and sacrificed for our nation,” Bodker said.

During the 2017 tour, over 8,500 people came to visit the then traveling “The Wall That Heals” during its five-day stop in Johns Creek. The stop included a motorcycle escort from the Patrio Guard as well as several veterans’ ceremonies.

Details on when “The Wall that Heals” will arrive have not been released yet, but the city and the Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony once it is installed and ready for public viewing.

“We are honored to partner with the city to bring this meaningful new asset to Johns Creek,” said Lynda Lee Smith, chairwoman of the Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau. “’The Wall that Heals’ will be a great addition to the Veterans Memorial Walk, creating a truly unique experience for both visitors and residents.”

Alpharetta students nominated for 15 audio-video awards ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Several Alpharetta High School students were recently nominated for a total of 15 Student Production Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Each year, schools from across the Southeast upload and enter their best work, which judges from the Southeast Emmys examine.

The judges award nominations for Student Production Awards based on professional criteria.

Students in Tracy Misner’s AudioVideo Film and Technology class garnered several nominations, including for Best Writing, Best Cultural Affairs Story, Best Photographer, Best Producer, Best Sound, Serious News, Light News, Arts

and Entertainment, and Sports Program.

Audrey Zermuehlen and Matthew George both received six nominations.

Kiel Cole received four nominations. Kyle Monahan and Eric Traugott received their third nomination in three years.

Many former Alpharetta students have entered the film and video industry with companies such as Turner and CBS Sports as well as YouTube influencers and video start-ups.

This year, the film and video program sent students to University of South Carolina, University of North Carolina and Savannah College of Art and Design.

The Student Production Awards will be hosted by David Chandley and Karyn Greer on June 9 at the SCADShow.

Alpharetta honors its fallen soldiers

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Even the weather agreed - Alpharetta’s Memorial Day service was a somber affair.

Overcast skies and drizzle greeted the crowd of over 300 people who gathered on the lawn behind City Hall for the fourth annual observance sponsored by the City of Alpharetta and the Alpharetta Rotary Club.

As is often the case, the message from the rostrum was clear: Americans have an obligation to remember those who died in service to their country.

One ray of sunshine fell over the crowd when, in a brief acknowledgement to those service members present, Alpharetta’s oldest veteran was recognized.

Four months following the attack on Pearl Harbor, on March 10, 1942, George Jones enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Commissioned a 2nd lieutenant, Jones served in battles waged against Japan in the South Pacific.

He returned to Alpharetta after the war, leaving the service with the rank of captain.

Jones, now 97, stood from his frontrow seat Monday to the applause of the entire assembly.

The keynote speaker was Maj. Gen. Maria Britt, retired, who served as Commanding General of Georgia’s 11,000

Army National Guard soldiers from 2007 to 2011. A 1983 graduate of West Point, she was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for her leadership in 2014.

“Today is so important,” Britt said.

“We must remember: we must carry on the tradition.”

She then recounted “real memories of real Georgians,” eight young Guardsmen who lost their lives in Afghanistan in 2009. The remembrance included accounts from friends and family of what kind of person each soldier was and how they exemplified honor, bravery and duty.

She pointed out that America serves overseas not to conquer, but to liberate.

“The only foreign land we ask for is to bury our fallen heroes,” Britt said.

WellStar breaks ground on new Avalon Health Park

On June 4, WellStar Health System held a groundbreaking ceremony for the WellStar Avalon Health Park – a facility that will house both primary and specialty physician practices. Medical practices and departments will include cardiac diagnostics, OrthoSport Physical Therapy, urgent care, pediatrics, lab outreach services and OB/GYN. It will be located at 2450 Old Milton Parkway, Alpharetta.

“WellStar is always seeking innovative ways to increase patient access to

world-class healthcare, and we have found our network of health parks to be very successful at doing just that,” said Joe Brywczynski, senior vice president of WellStar Health Parks Administration & Development. “We are thrilled to bring this innovative, one-stop shop for outpatient healthcare services to patients and families of Alpharetta as it will complement the variety of WellStar outpatient and inpatient services in the area, including WellStar North Fulton Hospital located just a few miles away.”

The two-story, 40,000-square-foot facility is expected to see over 80,000 outpatient procedures and patient visits in the North Fulton area its first full year of operation. It is expected to create 5075 new jobs.

The total cost of the project is approximately $15 million, and its completion is scheduled for summer 2019.

“WellStar North Fulton Hospital has been a fixture in this community for years,” said Jon-Paul Croom, WellStar senior vice president and president of WellStar North Fulton Hospital. “The opening of the WellStar Avalon Health Park creates a wonderful opportunity for patients and consumers to experience the high-quality care they have come to expect at the hospital in an outpatient setting.”

WellStar is one of the largest health systems in Georgia and includes 240 medical office locations and 11 hospitals.

A summer of leisure, or not of leisure – that is the question If the sticks in the backyard outlining our future pea-gravel walkway are any indication, there could be some incoming turbulence in my summer of leisure.

My wife is an GEOFF SMITH art teacher, which Assurance Financial, means she is very gsmith@lendtheway.com creative. But she is also very industrious. Her last workday before summer break was May 29.

When I got home from work on May 30, I saw new mulch, a re-arranged back porch, an organized garage, a new spreadsheet up on the computer detailing the boys’ summer camps, and those rows of sticks going from the stairs of the back deck to the gate in the fence.

Our boys are typically knee-deep in activities. At one point we realized that our oldest boy was in six different after-school activities — he kept asking, and we kept signing him up. We’ve since capped him at four.

The school year claims most weeknights and weekends, leaving a scant evening or Sunday afternoon where we stare at each other and wonder what to do with all the free time. It’s kind of like clinging to a bullet-train where you have a vague idea where it’s going, but you’re doing everything you can to make sure you stay on-board and in as orderly a fashion as is possible. Then finally the train slams to a stop, and that’s called summer.

All of a sudden, weeknights and weekends are wide open. Last summer was our first in our new house, which we bought as a fixer-upper. So I spent sun-up on Saturday to sundown on Sunday fixing it up. After a summer like that, I was looking forward to getting off that train this year and setting up shop in fun-land. In fact, I was so proud of the work I did last year that I declared out loud that this would be

my summer of leisure. I have dreams of hanging out at the neighborhood pool playing bocce ball with our friends.

Going camping. Golfing a Saturday or two. My mind really hasn’t even begun to wander yet.

But driving home and seeing what Brenda had done to the house on only her first day of summer showed me that her mind wasn’t wandering at all.

If my first move for summer is to head to the pool with the boys and a cooler, hers was to roll up her sleeves and initiate the myriad of projects that have been piling up in the back of her mind.

And there is the divide.

It’s hard to head to the pool when your wife is hauling 20 lb bags of pea gravel. My guilty conscience starts to act up (I’m Catholic after all).

So that’s kind of it. There’s no real message here, nor is there any break-

Rainstorms, webcams and waterfalls Can you believe the rain this past week? The amounts that fell in some areas were amazing (and a bit terrifying, too, especially if you were one of the folks affected by out-ofthe-banks creeks STEVE HUDSON and flash flooding).

I think about that TV video showing the normally quiet Chattahoochee through Helen as it rampaged through the town. Rain in the mountains flooded small branches, which then flooded small creeks, which in turn flooded bigger creeks and, eventually, flooded the Chattahoochee through the town.

The result? A zillion gallons of water roared right through the middle of the community, right through places that I recognized from days spent fishing the river earlier in the year. But there was no fishing in the midst of that maelstrom – just awe at the force of a flooding river.

Watching this on the news was scary enough, but watching it in real time was another. Thanks to the U.S. Geological Survey’s live webcam in Helen, I could see the river “right now” without leaving the comfort of home.

You can see it too. Here’s the web address: www2.usgs.gov/water/southatlantic/ga/rivercam/webcam-helen.html Watching the river this way is always interesting, and for a few seconds at a time you can even take control of where the camera is pointing. If we get more rain, and they say we might, this will be a compelling way to see firsthand what’s going on as the rain comes down and the rivers come up.

There’s another waterway webcam you might enjoy checking on too – the one that overlooks Big Creek near Rock Mill Park. Find it here to see what happens to Big Creek when heavy precipitation comes: www2.usgs.gov/water/southatlantic/ga/rivercam/webcam-bigcreek.htm I found this one by accident one day while fishing this part of Big Creek at low water. Right away, I called my wife on the phone and told her I was on TV, sort of, and that she should check it out. So she went to the site and, sure enough, there I was (waders and fly rod and all) standing on the paved greenway trail. I waved and blew her a kiss.

She liked that.

But I digress. Here in the southeast, we’ve got good live webcam coverage

An angler does some Trout fishing in the mountains between rain bands. of a number of different rivers. In fact, there are currently some 17 USGS river cams in operation in Georgia and in North and South Carolina. You can access them via the USGS site, usgs.gov/ centers/sa-water.

Look for the link at the right side of the screen (it’s the second entry under “SAWSC Quick Links”). Then click on the “Overview” tab, which takes you to the links to the various webcams. But be forewarned. These live river cams will eat up a ton of time if you don’t watch out.

Yes, river cams are nice. But there’s nothing like experiencing a creek or river firsthand, even in the rain. My buddy Marty and I managed to squeeze in a couple of hours of fishing last Monday far up in the mountains, between the worst of the rain bands, and the trout fishing turned out to be better than you might have expected. The trout, as my dad once pointed out to me, are already wet and don’t mind the precipitation at all (at least until things get too high and too muddy).

But the big rainy-weather draw isn’t fishing. It’s waterfalls.

There’s no doubt about it. If you’re a waterfalls enthusiast, the days right after a big rain event are the best time ever to check out some of northern Georgia’s falls. Otherwise, tiny falls become impressive cascades, and medium to large falls take on epic proportions that just may be a photographer’s dream come true.

Of course, you’ve got to keep safety in mind when visiting waterfalls during

or after a rain event. For one thing, there’s a wee bit of danger associated with all that fast-flowing, hard-falling water. Don’t forget that. Stay out of the swollen creeks, and don’t go climbing in search of a better angle, etc. etc. You know the drill.

Be careful hiking in too. The same rains that turn the falls into unforgettable scenes will also make trails slippery and footing unsure.

Are there any particular falls you should check out? Everyone has favorites. One of the most accessible (and most spectacular) post-rain waterfalls is Anna Ruby Falls (accessible via Ga. 356 and Anna Ruby Falls Road near Unicoi State Park) not far from Helen. Fed by creeks that come out of the mountains, this falls truly has been in world-class form these last few days – and the fact that a paved trail takes you to a couple of observation platforms makes the adventure even more appealing.

Other falls in the area will be equally impressive. In that context, I’ve got to mention Dukes Creek Falls, accessible from the parking area off the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway/GA 348 which turns west off Highway 75A just north of Smithgall Woods State Park). You’ve got to do a bit of hiking to get there, but it’s worth it at any time – especially after a lot of rain. Need I say more?

Just be safe as you visit these falls.

Never forget the power of a rain-swollen stream – even the little ones like you find up in the mountains.

Just don’t forget that camera – and a dry change of clothes!

3. Narrow your search by home type Another way to filter out homes you don’t need to consider is to decide on a specific kind of home and only look at those homes. For example, if you are open-minded about buying either a luxury condo or a single-family home, now is the time to decide between the two.

You can even take it further: would you like a newer home or a restored historic home? A classic bungalow or something more modern? The more detailed you are, the shorter your list becomes.

Add flair and personality: Another subtle way of giving you home a one-of-a-kind appearance is to add custom cutouts to your shutters.

Let your home’s personality shine with just about any shape you can imagine, from stars and crescent moons to palm trees and hearts. Go bold and traditional with a full cutout, or subtle and interesting with only a small relief cut on the outside corner. This obviously only works on paneled or Board and Batten style shutters. The exterior of your home is the first impression for people coming up to your house. Shutters play a crucial role in making or breaking that first impression. Boxes for the Troops program gains recognition ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Twenty-three recruiters, supervisors and key staff members from Division 1 of U.S. Navy Recruiting District Atlanta held their monthly training meeting April 27 at Alpharetta’s American Legion Post 201.

Following the meeting, three members of the group spent a few minutes examining the contents and talking to post member and Army veteran Stephen Olesnevich about the Post’s “Boxes for the Troops” program.

During the past 14 years, Olesevich has supervised the packing and shipping of more than 8,700 boxes of “goodies” for soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines deployed overseas. Olesevich sent 37 boxes to be mailed.

Like the football team, the Blessed Trinity girls swim and dive team captured their first state title in 2018. The Lambert girls and both Johns Creek teams placed as state runner-up.

Milton captured its first cheerleading state title over the winter, securing the co-ed championship. After winning six championships from 1997-2003,

South Forsyth rose to the top of the state podium again this year for their seventh title.

West Forsyth captured its second straight gymnastics state championships on April 20.

Cambridge won the first local titles of the 2017-18 season, sweeping the Class 6A cross country championships.

Milton’s boys team also earned the top spot of the podium in Class 7A. It was the first state championship for all three programs.

In volleyball, Blessed Trinity and Alpharetta earned berths in the state finals, but each team fell, ending North Fulton’s streak of consecutive titles since 2010.
