Debbie Williams ‘semi-retires’ after four decades in nursing By CANDY WAYLOCK

t the end of her 40-year career as a nurse, Debbie Williams still finds herself at the beginning – working for the doctor who gave her the first, and only, nursing job she ever held. After four decades of working for Dr. Michael Papciak of Preston Ridge Pediatrics in Alpharetta, Williams has a simple answer for why the grass was never greener in another practice. “I stayed with Dr. Papciak because he is a great physician and a wonderful boss,” said Williams, who lives in Woodstock with her husband, Allen, and children John and Rachel. “His patients, their parents, and staff all appreciate and admire him...I couldn’t have asked for a better place to spend my career.” The admiration is mutual. Years ago when Dr. Papciak was in the early years of his practice, he remembered the young Georgia Southern University nursing student who had impressed him with her skills and demeanor. “I needed my own nurse after one year of practice,” said Dr. Papciak, past chief of pediatrics at Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital. “I knew Debbie from her student rotation in our office while she was at GSU. I contacted her before she graduated to ask if she wanted to work for me... and the rest is history!” Reflecting on 40 years of nursing has given Williams a unique view of the changes in medical care over the decades. She has seen childhood diseases eradicated (smallpox), controlled (measles, mumps and chicken pox), and the emergence of new health issues that are a part of every new parent’s concerns (autism, aggressive flu and even Zika). Williams said children today seem to grow up quicker, with more direction and activities than kids from years ago.
3 “Children are exposed to more at younger ages, and they are very ‘busy’ with structured play, school and community sports [and all the other activities],” said Williams, who has lived in the Atlanta area since she was a young child. “But what is the same, and has never changed, is the parental love for their children...that remains constant over the years.” Improvements in medical care have significantly changed the way doctors and patients interact, she noted, giving both entities more control over the child’s health. “We do more in the office now than when I began, which decreases the need for specialty care or emergency department visits,” Williams explained. “The speed with which we can diagnose common illnesses with rapid tests such as flu, strep, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), enables us to treat more quickly when appropriate. Parents love the quick results.” She always knew nursing was a career she wanted, since it combined her two loves: children and the medical field. It is still a career she urges young people to follow. “I feel that working in the medical field is a ‘calling,’ not a job,” said Williams. “And anyone who feels that call should pursue it. We need them!” Although she is not working full time, Williams said she has no plans to step completely out of nursing, coming in a few days a week to continue the job she began 40 years ago. Her longevity with Dr. Papciak makes her among many long-term employees among the office staff. “We do have a number of staff who have been with Dr. Papciak for many years, myself included,” said Kelly McGraw, the office manager for Preston Ridge Pediatrics. She points to the current clinical supervisor, Terri Webb, who has been there 17 years, and who replaced Denise Jones who had been with the practice for 30 years. “I think that speaks to his management style and the culture that creates in the office,” said McGraw. But Williams is looking forward, at some point, to full retirement and traveling across the country with her husband. Just not quite yet, she laughed. Looking back over the past 40 years with Williams as a presence in his practice, Dr. Papciak said she never lost her sense of commitment to the patients and her love of nursing. “Debbie is always kind and polite to parents and kids and thoughtful of her co-workers,” he noted. “I never imagined she would work with me for so long. She works with me, not for me. As the years passed, we never counted them as a goal. It just happened so quickly.” ■

articipants and visitors of the Alpharetta Arts Streetfest will be seeing a new face this year, and she wants to help everybody smile with her work. Local artist Lucia Stewart will bring her Stressie Cat originals May 27-29 to delight the whole family with whimsical acrylic paintings of cats, dogs, birds and other animals. “I hope to put just a smile on somebody’s face,” Stewart said. “Whether it’s to touch them in a soulful way or to just make them smile, then my job’s done.” The works are inspired mainly by her pets, but the bright and cheerful style of Stressie Cat did not evolve until a few years ago. Stewart, a life-long artist, originally started her career painting realistic portraits of people in the United Kingdom. Originally from South Africa, she began cultivating this work as a way to find a niche for herself during her family’s frequent moves. “I had to find something while raising the kids that I would enjoy, and I

could move with me to any place,” Stewart said. “I found that in painting.” It wasn’t until the family had adopted Memo, the original Stressie Cat, in 2004 that Stewart developed her whimsical style. “It all started with Stressie Cat - Memo,” Stewart said. “I was doing a portrait of someone, and it was all messy, so I just painted over it.” But some of the paint still showed a little underneath on the canvass. According to Stewart, the resulting shadowy figure looked a little like a cartoony cat, like Memo, and she ran with it. “That was the first painting of Memo that I did,” Stewart said. “I really felt something real about that painting. It felt right.” She put it online to sell, but Stewart wasn’t prepared for the popularity that

painting would bring her. Soon after the original Stressie Cat painting sold, Stewart received multiple emails from interested customers asking if the painting had already gone and if she was planning to make more. That good feedback helped kick start what would later become her brand, Stressie Cat. “I had had a little bit of a tragic incident around that time, and I just stopped painting,” Stewart said. “I just stopped. I realized that there was so much bad out there in the world that I couldn’t just sit there and paint the ‘perfect’ picture of somebody. By the time I got back to painting, this is what I wanted to do. I wanted to put some happiness in the world.” In that first year alone, she sold over 4,000 Stressie Cat paintings. Stewart has since created a host of reoccurring characters in this line of work, including a pink dog, the little mouse, a pair of whimsical birds and the crows. Lucia Stewart works on her latest painting. These characters also show up in her other products, including greeting cards, pillows, T-shirts and the book, “The Clowning Crows.” The book is now taught as part of the lesson plans in some Luxembourg schools. Stewart will be at the Alpharetta Arts Streetfest, set for May 27-29 this year. This will be her first time in any arts festival. For more information about Stressie Cat and Stewart’s works, visit stressiecat.com. ■ “The Clowning Crows,” written and illustrated by Lucia
Stewart, features her reoccurring characters: the four crows.

Beauty Regimens

Then and Now ... By LORI WYNNE Style Contributor
B
eauty regimens and treatments have changed over the years, just like you. Remember getting a hair permanent to look your personal best? Here is a short list of your former beauty regimens and how you can upgrade to kinder and gentler ways to look your best.
Then:
Tweezing your eyebrows. Back in the day, your eyes could see those random eyebrow hairs just by looking in the bathroom mirror. You were a self-tweezer, and probably tweezed your brows just a little too aggressively. As your near-vision started to wane, you switched to a magnified mirror, but you kept it small because looking at a large one with its own lighting became an all too eye-opening experience by revealing every pore, wrinkle and imperfection on your lovely face. After a shocking self-revelatory experience during a past Christmas season, I stay away from the Brookstone and Sharper Image stores for that very reason.
NOW:
Threading your eyebrows. Even though it is relatively new to the Western Hemisphere, it has been practiced in Middle Eastern countries for centuries. Cotton threads are twisted and then wound around the applicator’s fingers. As the thread moves across the skin, it catches the unwanted hairs and pulls them out, including the follicles. Unlike tweezing, it catches several hairs at once and usually lasts longer because it removes the entire hair including the follicle. It is less painful than waxing and can be used on sensitive skin or for those using acne medication such as Retin A. Threading is also recommended for upper lip or chin hair.

Then:
Using tanning beds. We all know tanning beds are not good for your skin. The FDA and the CDC both suggest that you avoid using tanning beds in order to prevent developing skin cancer. There really is no such thing as a safe tan from a tanning bed. In addition to the risk of developing skin cancer, exposure to UV rays causes your skin to age prematurely.
NOW:
Sally Hansen Air Brush Legs. If you are like me, your arms, upper chest and face tan quicker than your legs. This product immediately gives you the color you desire without skin damage from over-exposure to the sun or tanning beds. It is easy to apply, lasts longer than a spray tan and can be easily removed with a soapy washcloth. Spray a small amount of the product from the aerosol can into the palm of your hand and spread onto your legs. I use three handfuls on each leg, which covers from my lower thighs to my toes. Confidence in a can from Walgreens! I’m available for in-home demonstrations.
Then:
Curling irons. Every time I think about curling irons, I think about that on-line video of the poor girl who burnt a section of her hair with her curling iron and it literally came off of her head! Even if you have mastered the art of using the curling iron, consider upgrading to a hairstyle that doesn’t need a curling iron with a spring hinge clip. This design has been around since the Civil War. I release you from this antiquated beauty regimen and gladly introduce you to another.
NOW:
Hot Tools curl bar. Sara Gault at Aura Salon in Alpharetta loves this styling tool because of its unique 90-degree angle to prevent any shoulder, elbow or wrist strain. A vibrating timer lets you know when you remove it from your hair to prevent burning. It has an adjustable temperature gauge to use just enough heat to curl your hair without damaging it. See this innovative product at www.hottools.com.
Then:
Bikini line waxing. After a few years of shaving, your hair stylist or friend suggests waxing your bikini line. They said it was so much simpler. One quick movement and all of your unwanted hairs would be gone. It doesn’t hurt, they promised. It will feel so smooth, they purred. You decide you deserve this extra pampering and subject yourself to hot wax that is applied, then promptly removed by applying a small piece of fabric that quickly “lifts” the unwanted hair away from your skin. If you were lucky, they even showed you the hair trapped in the wax on the underside of the fabric. My advice: just get the hair lasered and skip the red skin and in-grown hairs. I have another beauty regimen in mind for all that wax.
NOW:
Nose hair waxing. I’m here to tell you that if you are past a certain age, you need this beauty regimen. Everyone can see your nose hairs, but no one has the courage to tell you to do something about it. This experience will change your life! It will be a breath of fresh air, literally. Warm liquid wax is applied to the end of a small wooden stick and inserted just inside your nostril. The nostril is gently pressed from the outside to encourage those nose hairs that have been seeing daylight to adhere to the wax. After waiting just a minute or two for the wax to cool, the esthetician swiftly pulls the stick out of your nostril along with the errant nose hairs. You will breathe easier, blow your nose more efficiently, and have less chance of anything embarrassing hanging out of your nose. I promise you it doesn’t hurt and is less tortuous than tweezing each individual errant nose hair. Not every person in the hair removal business can perform this procedure with precision. Years later some of the children, now adults, are brought back together. The story begins when a young attorney has a connection with one of the ladies while visiting a local nursing home. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings lived a magical life aboard their family's Mississippi River shantyboat. Tips on Developing Better Habits in your Senior Years
D
id you know that more physical activity over the age of 65 can improve mood, lower the risk of injury and prevent chronic illnesses? According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, many medical conditions improve with some exercise later in life. This is just one change that you may be thinking of making after retirement, but there are many others you can make which will have a positive effect on your life. Take a look at our tips below to successfully develop better habits as a senior.
1. Don’t Just Eat - Cook
Developing eating habits as a senior doesn’t have to be a chore. Avoid scouring packets for ingredients and counting calories by making your own meals and substituting ingredients to suit your tastes. Why not try adding some superfoods to your diet to improve your health? According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, foods such as broccoli and walnuts are thought to help prevent breast cancer as part of a balanced diet.
2. Don’t Walk - Run
There is no reason that getting older should prevent you from getting fitter; your health will benefit from exercise no matter what age you are. There are lots of gym and swimming sessions targeted at seniors, and studies show that exercise after the age of 50 improves strength, mobility and enhances sleep. Your new regime
will also prevent post-menopausal weight gain so exercising will ensure hormonal changes don’t impact on your health.
3. Replace the Old with the New
If you are a smoker or have a habit of eating lots of takeaway meals, replace these habits with new ones. Instead of reaching for a glass of wine or a cigarette, reach for something healthy to eat or go for a long walk. The substitutions will become habits themselves and will feel more natural the longer you do them.
4. Plan for the Future
Plan your approach to allow for relapses or obstacles to your goal. What will you do if there are no senior gym sessions in your area? How will you cope while under stress? It is easier to go back to old habits than form new ones, so being prepared will help you succeed.
5. One Habit at a Time
Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many changes at once. Research shows it takes around a month to form a habit, so start with one change and continue until it feels natural. Research conducted by University College London has shown that a positive outlook in your 50s can significantly extend your lifespan. Think of your new habits as a positive step toward building a happier, longer future. ■ —Jessica Walter, Contrubiting Writer

candy@northsidewoman.com Shane Jackson, President of Jackson Healthcare City of residence: Milton Hometown: Sandy Springs, GA College/Major: Harding University (Ark.); Emory University (MBA) Family: Wife, Celeste; sons Langston and Chapman, and daughter, Emerson. Community Connections: Has served on several non-profit boards and is currently on the board of Junior Achievement of Atlanta, the Goodman Institute and the North Fulton Community Improvement District. Also serves as a deacon at Grace Fellowship Church.
S
hane Jackson describes Jackson Health Care as a “mission driven company” that aims to improve the delivery of patient care through its network of 17 individual companies that provide healthcare staffing and services nationwide. He started the company in 2000, partnering at the start with his father who was a visionary leader in the medical recruitment industry. But outside the office, Jackson gives much of his time to a variety of community and civic groups in the community. A lifelong resident of North Fulton, Jackson is impressed by the area’s growth and emergence as a business engine for the entire region.
What are your thoughts on North Fulton’s transition from a sleepy Atlanta suburb to a
business hub?
I grew up in North Fulton, so except for four years in college and two years in Texas chasing a girl (my wife) this has been home for me. Over that time I have witnessed first-hand the explosive growth. There is a lot of benefit and opportunity to the growth but obvious challenges in keeping up with infrastructure.
What are some of the challenges?
I remember when 400 was finished and connected 285 to 85. That created incredible development up the 400 corridor. Overall I think we have done a good job keeping up, but I am concerned that we aren’t doing enough to build the transportation infrastructure needed for the next 25 years. From a business standpoint, North Fulton is a wonderful place to be. There is an incredible quality of life here, so there are lots of talented people who live here or want to live here.
That was the genesis of what is now Jackson Healthcare.
How did you get involved in healthcare management?
Has the debate over medical insurance affected your company in any way?
I grew up surrounded by the healthcare industry. In 1978 my father started the first company in the country that recruited physicians to come work at hospitals. He sold that company when I was a teenager and went on to start businesses in various other areas of healthcare. In 2000, when I was finishing my MBA at Emory, he asked me if I wanted to come work with him to start a company that leveraged technology in healthcare services.

SHANE JACKSON

The national policy debate about healthcare for the past eight years has certainly impacted us, and caused a lot of uncertainty in the industry. In the beginning there were questions over whether it would pass, would the Supreme Court overturn it, would there be a reversal if Mitt Romney won, etc. Then we had to see what would happen when it actually became law. Imagine running a business for six years of not knowing how you were going to get paid, and that your destiny was being controlled by people in the government who know very little about what you do. We are facing that kind of uncertainty again under a new administration that is trying to figure out how to “repeal and replace.” On the plus side, we have been able to continue to provide a high quality of service and grow despite the uncertainty and changes.
Outside the “office,” how important is community involvement?
I believe the best way I can make a positive impact in this community is to run a business that believes strongly in giving back — beyond writing a check to a charity. Through Jackson Healthcare Charities we support dozens of charitable organizations locally and globally, and we also encourage our 1,100 associates to serve our community. Our associates perform service projects on company time, go on team service and medical mission trips around the country and the world, and incubate several charitable organizations within our company. Last year we launched Video Medical Missions (VMM) that connects doctors and other healthcare providers with people in need all over the world. I believe it will revolutionize healthcare for people around the world, who otherwise would never have access to top-notch medical attention.
So, in your free time, where will we find you?
Shane Jackson and wife, Celeste, with children, from left, Langston, Chapman and Emerson. 16 | northsidewoman.com | may2017
I managed to climb Mount Kilimanjaro last year, which was amazing! However, most all of my free time is spent with my family. You are very likely to find me at a ballfield coaching or watching my kids play sports. Up until a couple of years ago I was a pretty avid triathlete, competing in several races a year. I still workout regularly, but it’s hard to get in a three-hour bike ride when we have basketball, softball and soccer games all day Saturday! I also like to take my family on lengthy camping trips in our motor home where we can all unplug and enjoy quality time together. ■

Her responsibilities will be to oversee the entire medical staff at the hospital including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and others. She also chairs the Medical Executive Committee for the hospital and is part of the Executive Leadership Team. “Dr. Dunson-Allen has dedicated her career to her patients and will have a great impact on the quality of patient care for the North Fulton community,” said Lindsey Petrini, interim president of WellStar North Fulton Hospital. “Our physicians, nurses, leaders and team members agree she’s an asset and look forward to benefiting from her passion for patient care.” Dunson-Allen had been on staff at North Fulton Hospital since 2001, and will continue at WellStar North Fulton. “I execute projects and programs and the day-today functioning related to physicians and healthcare providers,” she said. “(The acquisition is) exciting. The WellStar corporation is a very good corporate entity. They have a great plan for North Fulton Hospital, now WellStar North Fulton Hospital, to continue to grow in the community and provide outstanding services across the board.”
The hospital is one of the few in the state fully accredited for trauma, she said. Additionally, it is an accredited stroke center, offers inpatient rehab services, has an intensive care unit, cardiology services, has a “5star” women’s health division and the lowest cesarean rate in the state of Georgia. “We have in-house midwifery care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so women have an opportunity to labor a little longer and usually because of that have a successful vaginal delivery,” Dunson-Allen said. “We are really proud of that.” The hospital also strives to help its team members in personal development. “This is significant to help them identify talent, reward it and support people in the organization who are trying to move forward in their educational and professional growth,” Dunson-Allen said. “This will help retain them as employees and they won’t have to hire new people all the time and train them. It’s nice to have your own timeline and develop your own internal group of staff members.” While the hospital has a lot of programs, it has always been community-based, she said. “We’ve always been focused on providing service lines that are necessary for taking care of people in a community,” Dunson-Allen said. “We are focused on quality and safety. That focus is good and is the direction hospitals need to go in the future to continue being successful and continue to provide the quality of care we want patients to have.” In addition to this new role, Dunson-Allen will continue to run her private practice, Providence Women’s Healthcare practicing OBGYN and midwifery, which has three locations in Alpharetta/Roswell, Dunwoody and Johns Creek. ■

The sweet life in Roswell

Schakolad knows what makes customers happy By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
L
ife doesn’t get much sweeter when your days are spent surrounded by chocolate and all things decadent and delicious. For Jeannie Korac and her husband, Craig, operating the Schakolad Chocolate Factory in Roswell for the past three years was a significant departure from their previous corporate life. But it was a decision they’ve never regretted – even the long hours they spend making sure recipes are perfect and customers are happy. In fact, Jeannie says there is something therapeutic about Jeannie Korac owner of the Schakolad Chocolate Factory in Roswell. chocolate. “Chocolate heals all!” laughed Jeannie, whose corporate experience includes the financial world of Wall Street. “Making and designing chocolate is a wonderful and relaxing change from the corporate world. And our clients [always] leave our shop feeling happy.” Originally from New York, Jeannie and Craig moved to Roswell 25 years ago where their four children were born and raised. The two had never ventured into the food industry but had experience in small business ownership, having run a telecommunications business for years. Jeannie had helped out at the Roswell Schakolad during rush times, then jumped on the opportunity to operate the store when the situation arose. Today, Jeannie and Craig continue the tradition of a “personal, boutique, and unique chocolate experience” every time a customer walks into the store, calls on the phone or taps into the website. “Our chocolates are made fresh on premises using a three-generation European recipe that calls for the highest quality ingredients and attention to design detail,” Jeannie said. “Our items do not come pre-packaged from a factory, but are prepared and dipped right here in Roswell.” The Schakolad franchise in Roswell is the only one in Georgia, but other locations can be found across the country, and even internationally. Jeannie said there are some items found in every location, but individual operators are allowed to expand the “menu” to fit their community. “We abide by the basic items featured on the corporate website but expand our selection with the season and customer requests,” Jeannie said. “This ability keep us tied closely to the Roswell community and their needs. The community is our customer.” This flexibility allows the Koracs to be innovative and creative when meeting customers’ requests. Jeannie said some of their most popular chocolate flavors came directly from their clients. She points to a regular customer who had Schakolad re-create his favorite childhood flavor — cranberry orange truffle — which is now among the store’s best seller. The menu at the Roswell location includes over 50 different varieties of truffles as well as custom chocolate creations, holiday and special occasion molded novelties, edible photos and frames, creative gift baskets and sugar-free items. “On the yummy side I would say our Ganache is the most popular,” said Jeannie. “The endless variety of flavor combinations combined with heavy cream base ensures the velvety texture with each bite is as delicious as the first. “ The Roswell Schakalod is truly a family business, with their four kids helping out on occasion, and Bill and Jeannie spending way beyond the standard 40-hour week inside the store making sure all is right. “Never be surprised to see my husband in back making ganache, my older children helping with our birthday parties and our youngest helping customers decide on their favorite of the day. Chocolate is part of our life now,” Jeannie said. Looking to the future, the Koracs say they are looking forward to simply continuing to serve their regular clients, as well as expanding their reach to newer customers. “We are blessed with a very loyal customer base and have an ever expanding corporate clientele,” Jeannie said. “This summer we will be expanding our selection of small gifts and assorted seasonal items to make us the one stop shop for every occasion.” ■

Group aims to get youth involved in raising awareness By KATHLEEN STURGEON
kathleen@appenmediagroup.com
E
ven from a young age, Dania Ibrahim has been passionate about helping others. That’s how the Johns Creek High School senior became involved with the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund Youth Committee. The group is a non-political, non-profit organization dedicated to fighting the medical and humanitarian crisis facing children in the Middle East “We meet regularly to plan our events, designate work, do any necessary research and to reach out to other youth to help make our events successful,” Dania said. “We also help by meeting with the children that come to Atlanta for treatment, making them feel comfortable and welcome. We aim to be their family away from home.” The youth committee was started five years ago with the purpose of getting the youth involved in organizing and implementing different activities to create awareness and raise funds, Ibrahim said. She has been involved with the group since its inception and is currently a copresident.
Her co-president, Ayah Ibrahim, no relation, is a senior at Centennial High School. She, too, has strived to be a leader in her community. “Attending a public high school as an Arab-American Muslim has required me to step outside my comfort zone, take chances and build bridges,” Ayah said. “As an Arab-American, being born into two very different cultures, has helped me embrace a diverse world. Growing up in a socially conscious environment influenced my motivation and decision to establish the first youth chapter within the International Palestine Children’s Relief Fund with my best friend, Dania.” Both of Dania’s parents were born in Palestine. She’s visited multiple times and has seen firsthand the need for an organization like this. “Because of the casual format of our events, we have been able to attract a wide variety of people,” Dania said. “That includes friends from our schools and neighborhoods. It calls attention to the limited healthcare available to the children of Palestine and neighboring countries.” The group’s future plans include garnering the support of a larger audience and continuing to grow their events, Dania said. Ideally, they’re hoping to have a bigger, well-known 5K someday. For now, they’ll focus on their two main events of the year which are a trivia night and a 5K walk/run, which have become annual events due to their success. They also play an important role in helping with events put on by the overall foundation board, such as the yearly gala and chili cook-off. “Giving the youth a voice in their community and opportunities to learn the soft skills of leadership, cooperation and dedication set them up to be successful individuals all while selflessly serving a purpose greater than themselves,” Dania said. ■

Knees-friendly
hiking along the Chattahoochee
Nearby trail offers great hiking…with no sore knees at the end! By STEVE HUDSON
Outside Georgia Contributor
I
do dearly love to hike. It’s always fun, though (depending on the trail I choose) my knees may remind me the next day that they’re not as young as they used to be. Darn those knees. Truth be told, there are some days when I have to listen to them. Some days they remind me that what I want is not an epic adventure in the Georgia equivalent of the Andes Mountains but, instead, some sort of kinder, gentler, more knee-friendly hike. I was talking with a lady in the grocery store (her name turned out to be Emily) about that very topic just the other day. We were waiting in the checkout line with other customers in front of us, so we had a moment to chat as people in grocery store lines often do. We made small talk as the line inched forward, first discussing grandkids, but then she looked at me for a long second and asked, “Aren’t you the guy who writes about the outdoors?” Writers love to be asked that kind of thing “Well, yes, I guess I am,” I said. “I thought so,” she said. “And now I’ve got a question for you. Where’s a good place to hike? Not for the grandkids, but for me, you know. I like to hike, but I’m not as young as I used to be and those mountain trails just get me these days. Where would you recommend?” Now that’s a great question. Where is a good place for a bit of kneefriendly hiking fun? I thought about that for a second, mentally running through a list of essential qualifications (good trail surface, easy access, safe environment, and so on) and one place jumped immediately to mind. “I think,” I said, in most considered writer-type voice, “that I know the perfect trail for you.” And so here’s a look at one of my favorite knee-friendly trails in the north Atlanta area – the Cochran Shoals Fitness Loop Trail in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, right off I-285. The three-mile Cochran Shoals Fitness Loop Trail is one of the most heavily used CRNRA trails, and it’s easy to see why. It takes the form of a long loop which stretches along the Chattahoochee River between Interstate North Parkway near I-285 and Columns Drive. One leg follows the river; the other follows a parallel course several hundred yards inland. A cut-through connector near the downstream end of the loop allows you turn it into a sort of figure-8 should you desire. 22 | northsidewoman.com | may2017
FINDING THE TRAILHEADS Columns Drive trailhead from I-285: Take Exit 24 (Riverside Drive) and go north for about 2.2 miles to Johnson Ferry Road. Turn left onto Johnson Ferry Road. You’ll soon cross the Chattahoochee. Immediately across the river, turn left onto Columns drive. Follow Columns Drive for roughly 2.6 miles. Columns Drive will end at the Columns Drive parking area. Interstate North Parkway trailhead from I-285 westbound: Take Exit 22 (Northside Drive/ New Northside Drive/Powers Ferry Road) and continue onto Interstate North Parkway. The parking area is on the right off Interstate North Parkway just west of the river.
However you choose to parse your hike, you’ll find that the hiking is easy and knee-friendly. It’s no surprise that this trail is popular with joggers, walkers, cyclists and even parents pushing strollers – and with seniors who have discovered that it’s a great place to enjoy hiking near the river without the rigors of serious mountain terrain. What about access? Two parking areas – one at the end of Columns Drive on the loop’s upstream end and one just off Interstate North Parkway near the south end – provide easy access to the fitness trail. Because this area is so popular, these parking areas may fill up on weekends or weekday afternoons with cars waiting for a space to open up. But even during the busy times you usually don’t have to wait too long. And what’s the trail like? Here’s a quick guide, starting at the parking area off Interstate North Parkway and going counterclockwise. From the parking area, a wide gravel connector leads upriver to the loop itself. As you traverse the connector, you’ll see picnic tables on your left and, behind them, a rocky bluff where overhanging rock ledges form rock shelters which were used by Native Americans in centuries past. Side trails allow you to approach them for a better look. Soon, you’ll cross a bridge over a feeder stream. Beyond that bridge is the loop itself. We’ll hike the loop counterclockwise, so continue straight ahead. This portion of the loop follows the Chattahoochee upstream, crossing several feeder streams as you go. The largest of these is Terrell Mill Creek, and just beyond it you’ll see the cross-loop connector turning off to your left. The connector makes it easy to enjoy a much shorter hike, if you wish. Since it carries you through some wetlands, it’s a great place to look for wildlife. But I digress. For now, stay on the main loop and continue upriver. Eventually, the trail will start to swing left. Soon thereafter you’ll come to the Columns Drive parking area (off to your right if you’re hiking counterclockwise), but go left to continue the loop. Still level and smooth, the loop now begins its downstream leg. As you go, you’ll spot several smaller trails turning off the main loop to connect with more rugged parts of the Cochran Shoals trail network. The main loop, however, continues straight ahead and remains level and easy to follow. Soon, you’ll come to the other end of the cut-across connector trail. Beyond that intersection, the trail again crosses Terrell Mill Creek. Once across, the route swings left and takes you back to the Interstate North parking area connector trail. You can call it day and return to your car…or you can stay on the loop and hike it again, perhaps exploring the crossloop trail too. Since the line was moving slowly, I had time to tell Emily pretty much all of this. “It sounds like the kind of trail I’m looking for,” she said. “Would the grandkids enjoy it too? “I think they would,” I answered. “I’ll bet they’ll have a blast. And nobody’s knees will be protesting in the end.” “Amen to that!” she said. ■

Nonprofit offers multitude of services By CANDY WAYLOCK

S
enior Services North Fulton Community Relations Director Heather Terry is taking on a large undertaking. “Typically, when people think of the North Fulton area, senior hunger does not come to mind,” Terry said. “The truth is one in eight seniors in North Fulton worry about where their next meal will come from.” The public is usually surprised to learn the nonprofit’s volunteers delivered over 30,000 Meals on Wheels to people’s homes in 2016, Terry said. Additionally, they served over 19,000 hot meals at their four senior centers in Alpharetta, Milton, Roswell and Sandy Springs. All in all, the group satisfied the food need for about 780 seniors in North Fulton in 2016. “But we know there are more people out there that don’t know about our services,” Terry said. “Our job won’t be done until we identify every senior in need and eliminate senior hunger in North Fulton.” And that’s just one program offered by Senior Services. The group also has transportation, centers and in-home help. Terry took on this large responsibility only nine months ago. She was working in the senior care industry doing marketing and sales for nine years before she received a call out of the blue to interview with Ron Harlow, executive director of Senior Services North Fulton. Harlow was looking for someone connected in the community that could help find more seniors in need and, as the programs grow, help with fundraising. “I had been working in sales for 18 years, I had never worked for a nonprofit before and I really didn’t think it would be a fit for me,” Terry said. “I could tell right away Ron had a passion for taking care of seniors and that his team at Senior Services North Fulton was doing something very special. After the interview I called my husband from the parking lot and told him I was taking the job. After 18 years of selling to people, I was moving to an agency where we give to people.” Many of the group’s clients don’t have family in the area to support them, Terry said,

PROGRAMS THAT SENIOR SERVICES NORTH FULTON OFFER: • TOPS (Transportation Options for Seniors) — This is a medical transportation program designed to get seniors in North Fulton to and from their medical appointments. • GATE (Get Around Town Easily) — This is another transportation program that utilizes vouchers to facilitate travel pretty much anywhere around town. The client purchases a $100 transportation voucher book for $25. Clients use this service to travel to the grocery store, pharmacy, hair appointments, church and to visit with friends. • SENIOR CENTERS — The group operates four senior centers in North Fulton – Alpharetta, Roswell, Milton and Sandy Springs. The senior centers are a great place to meet new friends, engage in fun activities and receive a hot lunch. Transportation can also be provided to and from the centers. • CARE MANAGEMENT —The group has four care managers on staff that provide personal assessments to certify seniors for services, coordinate care to meet their needs and to help them live as independently as possible. • IN-HOME SERVICES — Arrangements can be made for personal care, homemaker services and respite care for seniors in need and their caregivers. • MEALS ON WHEELS — This is available to anyone age 60 and older who resides in North Fulton (Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, Mountain Park, Roswell and Sandy Springs) who are unable to prepare meals for themselves or who are having trouble affording groceries. • MEALS ON WHEELS FOR PETS — Yes, that is correct! Pet food is expensive and heavy. Often times a pet is the only companion our clients have. Senior Services doesn’t want anyone to give up their furry friends because they are having trouble affording pet food.
ABBY BREAUX PHOTOGRAPHY
and often the contact they receive from Meals on Wheels volunteers might be the only human interaction they have all day. “We hear from our clients all the time that our volunteers are angels,” Terry said. “Yes, they are showing up at the door with a meal, but it’s more than just a meal. It’s someone to talk to, it’s someone that is there to make sure they are okay and it’s a friend that cares. I got involved because seniors are some of our most vulnerable members in the community. I want to do my part in making sure they are cared for and not forgotten.” In addition to emotional support, the seniors often need help financially. Hundreds of Baby Boomers are turning 60 every day in Georgia and senior need is increasing every day, she said. “Most seniors are on very small fixed incomes,” Terry said. “Their social security checks are not increasing each year, but the cost of their healthcare and medications are. Can you imagine having to decide between paying for your diabetes medication or buying food? Senior Services North Fulton takes some of the pressure and anxiety off the seniors we support with our various programs. It’s amazing what a little added support can do for someone. A prepared meal each day, or having transportation available can be a game changer for so many that want to remain in their homes, or for those who cannot afford to move to an assisted living community.” To donate or learn more, call 770-993-1906 extension 223, or visit ssnorthfulton.org. ■

What Kind of Mother ARE YOU?
herchild
A
recent Harvard Business School study on the “Impact of Working Mothers” concludes that children of mothers that work outside the home are more successful in the workplace than those of their peers, earning as much as 23 percent more and possessing more powerful positions. Hmmm…do you feel this is true? In today’s world we have a wide variety of “moms” …. possessing powerful positions in and outside of the home! Over 22 years of Peachtree Park Prep, the universe of moms at our preschool has evolved from one with an overwhelming majority of moms working outside the home to a much more diverse group. There are now a blend of “working moms” who have moved their office to their home, moms who now work part-time or have left the workforce entirely, to home-schooling moms, to moms that travel for their careers, and pretty much everything in between. Have you ever spent a day in the life of a “working mom”? Have you ever spent a day in the life of a “stay at home mom”? It would be hard to make a determination on which is the easiest, most diverse, most stressful, and most rewarding experience, not to mention which one of these “moms” has the most so-called positive impact on their children! I am the product of a stay at home mom…..I never went to preschool…and I was one of a very few of my peers that went to Kindergarten. My mother was and is the quintessential Southern mom. She was at home cooking and cleaning as we all went off for the day, she made a lot of my clothes (as well as my Barbie’s clothes), she volunteered for everything at my school, she kept my first son while I went back to work. She is 82 and my grown boys still have favorite things for her to cook especially for them. Did she have an impact on my ability to be successful in the eyes of the business world ~ I don’t think so. Did she have an impact on my ability to be a great mom in the eyes of my sons ~ absolutely. What has the most impact on children? The love of their mother….whichever role she chooses to take in the eyes of the family. Happy MOTHER’S DAY ~~ — Kay Paschal, Peachtree Park Prep

Knowing CPR and first aid important for pet owners
By DR. JOANNE ROESNER, DVM, DABVP Loving Hands Animal Hospital www.lovinghands.com
H
ave you ever agonized when your pet was ill or injured because you did not know how to help? Would you know what to do if your pet suddenly ceased to breathe, or if your retriever had a tennis ball stuck in his/her throat? And do you know what is truly poisonous to your pet, and what is just dangerous? Unfortunately, the answers to these questions are not common knowledge, and looking them up is nearly impossible in a true emergency situation. The American Red Cross urges all pet owners to include their four-legged companions in their overall family safety and health plan. Owners should know everything from basic first aid, to more advanced care, and what supplies to keep on hand in case their pet has an emergency. In an effort to help our clients and patients, Loving Hands Animal Clinic in Alpharetta developed a first aid and pet CPR course 20 years ago, and has helped hundreds of families (and their pets) over the years. During the training events, veterinarians from Loving Hands train participants in safe handling and moving of injured pets. They learn common toxic substances, what to do, and how to contact ASPCA Animal Poison Control in the event of an emergency. Bandaging, splinting, and
wound care are demonstrated. Attendees are given the opportunity to practice CPR on a dummy dog, to identify normal vital signs and to safely perform the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge airway obstructions. Emergency interventions for seizures, heatstroke, vomiting, diarrhea, and other internal emergencies are also outlined. A manual to keep at home is provided. A public training event is held in the spring each year, but an abbreviated presentation can be done for private groups including social or neighborhood groups. As with all of our community events, this training is free of charge. If you would like a copy of our manual, please email staff@lovinghands.com. Knowledge gained can not only save the life of your pet, but any injured animal you encounter. A basic knowledge of pet care can take away the feeling of helplessness because you will know how to intervene safely. â–

Sarah is nine years old but in perfect health with lots of years left to give to a new forever family. Minimally invasive options in gynecologic medicine
T
he field of gynecologic medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds over the last several years. Gone is the necessity for large incisions and long recoveries. According to Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga and Dr. Annie Kim of Modern Ob/Gyn, minimally invasive procedures are almost always the best options for patients. Heavy bleeding and painful cycles can now be treated with same day procedures that require no downtime. “There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times,” Dr. John Reyes said. “da Vinci robotic surgery is also an amazing service.” Endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts and other common issues are sometimes best addressed with robotic surgery. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci gynecologic robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes pioneered the implementation of this fastgrowing service in our community. Patients benefit from robotic surgery by having less risk for complications, short overnight hospital stays, faster recovery times, and minimal pain. Modern Ob/Gyn dedicates its gynecologic practice to minimally invasive surgeries and is an experienced leader in our community for robotic gynecologic surgery, performing these procedures at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth. The physicians at Modern ObGyn enjoy providing second opinions and consultations because they believe it is vital to make patients aware of their choices. “We really value educating our patients so they understand their medical issues, why certain treatments are better than others, and what their options are for treatment,” said Dr. Ingrid. ■

Reasons why women may experience hair loss By DR. DANYO
North Atlanta Hair Restoration
T
here is no way to avoid all of the physical changes associated with aging. Some changes are irreparable, but others can be remedied with proper treatments. This is particularly good news for women suffering from thinning hair. The most important factor in restoring thinning hair is to discover the cause of the problem. Hair loss in women has many underlying causes; some are easier to resolve than others are, but those suffering from hair loss should not lose hope, help is available. The causes of women’s hair loss divide into two categories. Those conditions that can resolve themselves over time with little or no professional intervention, and those which require medical or professional intervention to halt hair loss and ideally, grow more hair. Hair loss catalysts in the first category include; pregnancy, anemia, physical/emotional stress, over styling, and a lack of protein in the diet. In these cases, restoring hair growth can be as simple as making lifestyle changes. Medical advice is best for some causes, and hair regrowth typically occurs within several weeks or a month of resolving the cause. Hair loss with origins in the second category will need professional intervention for hair re-
growth. Some of these causes are: Autoimmune-related hair loss The medical term for this is Alopecia Areata. It is thought that it is caused by an overactive immune system. The overactive immune system mistakes hair for an invasive foreign body and destroys it. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome An imbalance between female and male hormones causes this condition. An overabundance of androgens, combined with insulin resistance, can lead to hair
loss as well as other medical conditions such as ovarian cysts or diabetes. Hypothyroidism This is the medical term for having an underactive thyroid gland. When the thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones, hair loss can occur. It doesn’t cause hair loss in the common areas of the crown or hairline. Instead, loss happens throughout the scalp. Medications Some types of medication are linked to hair loss. The most common of these are beta-blockers, birth control and other hormonal medications, methotrexate, lithium, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including ibuprofen, and some antidepressants. A medical professional should diagnose these causes, as a variety of medical needs may need to be addressed. Hereditary and Aging Only 45% of women reach the age of 80 with a full head of hair. Hair loss is a natural part of the aging process for
Pinhole Surgical Technique Halting Gingival Recession in a single visit By DR. USHMA PATEL WITH Center for Advanced Dentistry
R
ejuvenate your smile and oral health Nothing can make a smile and face appear older than receding gums. The progression of gum recession can eventually weaken your teeth, causing greater sensitivity, root damage and even tooth loss. Using the revolutionary Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST), Dr. Ushma Patel can treat receding gums with a minimally invasive procedure. It also replaces the need for traditional gum grafting surgery that relies on cutting and suturing, which often results in painful recovery. With the Pinhole Surgical Technique, you can repair your gums in just an hour or two, with minimal recovery. Dr. Ushma Patel is one of few doctors in the United States offering the breakthrough Pinhole Surgical Technique as a treatment for receding gums. The long term success of the treatment has been observed to last for years, with uniformly excellent and predictable results. The procedure itself only takes a few minutes per tooth, with minimized recovery time and no lasting discomfort. Although you have the option to treat one area of your mouth at a time, it is generally easy enough for Dr. Ushma Patel to restore all affected areas of recessed gum tissue in just one visit. 38 | northsidewoman.com | may2017
many people. How dramatic this is can depend a lot on one’s genetics. In these cases, women are fortunate to have more successful hair restoration treatment options than ever. The ease, affordability, and results of newer treatments have caused women to flock to hair restoration clinics in record numbers. Once a medical reason has been eliminated, it is time to choose a hair restoration clinic. We specialize in Unshaven FUE. This is a type of hair restoration procedure that allows us to transplant hair without shaving any part of the scalp. You can be back to work and social activities with minimal downtime. Best of all, no one needs to know. For more information please join us at the expo on May 6th from 10a-2p at The Metropolitan Club in Alpharetta; you are invited to come by my booth or come to my talk scheduled at 11am. You are also welcome to call us for a consultation, 678845-7521. ■
Treatment is performed with local anesthetic, and the average amount of time the entire treatment lasts is from one to two hours. Typically, the only posttreatment medication you will need is perhaps a couple of Tylenol or Advil to ease any minor discomfort. In addition to being a very fast and minimally invasive treatment, the results are predictable and stable. Many cases have shown that the Pinhole Surgical Technique can effectively restore full gum coverage for several years after treatment. How the Pinhole Surgical Technique works First, any affected teeth are thoroughly cleaned and prepared by numbing the gum tissue with a local anesthetic. Next, a tiny, pinhole-sized entry point is made in the gum tissue above the affected tooth. Dr. Ushma Patel will then use a specially designed instrument patented by the inventor of the procedure, Dr. John Chao, which frees the connective gum tissue. The instrument gently repositions the gum tissue so that it covers the exposed tooth root, restoring the gums to their proper position. Next, Dr. Ushma Patel will carefully insert tiny collagen strips beneath the repositioned gum tissue. The collagen strips act as structural supports that help to stabilize the newly formed position of the gums. Once this is done, the procedure is complete! Dr. Ushm Patel can treat up to 14 affected teeth in one session. There is little to no post-operative discomfort at all, and once finished, you are ready to smile again with confidence! Call us for a free consultation with Dr. Patel to see if Pinhole Surgical Technique is right for you! 770-884-6623. ■

Are you done taking care of everyone else? M
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) A blue stop sign for skin cancer
ost women have difficulty taking care of themselves. Maybe you think you aren’t one of them… but are you? 1. Do you take care of everyone else before you take care of
yourself? 2. Do you put children’, spouse’s, or work schedules on the calendar and then work yours in where there is space? 3. Do you want to take some time off, but guilt makes you postpone it? 4. Do you spend money on other’s activities, but not on your own? If so, then you are long over-due for some “me-time”. And I mean quality “me-time”. You deserve a dedicated date on the calendar for your activity. Please note that this does not include working out, because that’s still work. I mean a date on the calendar for your mental sanity, where your soul is touched, and you feel like that younger version of you again. It’s time to slip away from your family, friends, obligations, and worries. Put all this on hold for just an hour and come back to yourself. That is the beauty of a spa treatment. Yes, you are the glue to keep it all together, but appreciation starts with you. If you don’t think you are important enough for an hour, then no one else will. Put your foot gently but firmly down, tell your family, and most importantly tell yourself that in order to be the best care-giver, the kindest person, and to be true to yourself, you must put a firm date on the calendar and stick to it. Imagine it - for just one blissful hour, you are the focus of attention. You get to be pampered, worried about, and cared for. Life will roll on around you for that brief period, and you will be bouncing back with vigor, energy, and happiness in your own life. ■
I
t is often after a patient’s first Mohs surgery that I am asked a very important question: What can I do to prevent future skin cancer surgeries? Besides jumping into a DeLorean and convincing your adolescent self to use sunscreen and wear a hat, one of the best options for resolving much of your sun damage lies in none other than more exposure to light! But sun worshipers need not get too excited – this is not the light of more sun exposure or of indoor tanning beds but rather photodynamic therapy (nicknamed PDT or blue light therapy). The question of whether someone has skin cancer is not always black or white. Often, there are shades of gray. Yes, many moles are simply healthy, and a few other growths prove to be melanoma. However, for most people and for most concerning growths, skin cancers progress through early “precancerous” stages when they can be more easily treated and can be addressed non-invasively and non-surgically. Many skin cancers begin as a “pre-cancer” called an actinic keratosis or “AK” – a rough or discolored area that usually arises in an area of sun-damaged or sun-exposed skin. Often, a heavily sun-damaged individual will have ten or twenty actinic keratoses. AK’s typically grow slowly with perhaps 1-2% progressing to skin cancer per year.
To put it simply, if you have 10 AKs on your body, you have a 10%-20% chance per year that one will develop into a skin cancer. This slow growth rate means that there is time to treat AKs before they become skin cancer. If individuals with red TAYLOR or rough sun-damaged skin address their sun damage now, they will have less reason to regret their fun summer memories later. Active individuals such as the residents of our area enjoy family time outdoors, golfing, going to the pool, and outdoor exercise. These minutes clocked under the sun add up. Luckily, a single PDT treatment can erase 75% of pre-cancers in a single area in just one treatment. So what exactly is PDT? During PDT, a nurse or physician applies a liquid medicine called ALA to the area to be treated: often the face, scalp, neck or décolletage undergo therapy, but other areas such as the arms may also be treated. The ALA incubates and sits on the skin for one to four hours. ALA is absorbed by unhealthy cells during the incubation phase. A blue light specially designed to activate ALA is then applied for about fifteen minutes. Blue light of 410-420nm in wavelength activates the ALA, causing it to damage the unhealthy cells and allowing them to be eliminated and replaced by healthy skin. Blue light therapy is selective -- it causes the destruction of precancerous cells without significantly damaging surrounding healthy cells. After PDT treatment, a patient should

completely avoid the sun for at least 48 hrs, as the treatment will mimic a moderate sunburn. It takes roughly 4-6 weeks for patients to see the overall improvement in their skin but depending on the degree of sun damage, the effects can be dramatic! An added benefit of PDT is an overall healthier complexion, more even skin tone, reduced acne (PDT treatments are also used for acne issues), and a more youthful appearance. Usually covered by insurance, PDT is an excellent treatment option for someone looking to eliminate pre-cancers and decrease the chances of future skin cancers. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, we are proud to offer BLU-U, the gold standard in PDT treatment. Does it seem like your loved one’s need for care is continually changing along with the cost associated with that care? Are you caught off guard with additional expenses during these tough economic times? Are you questioning how long you will be able to afford quality care for someone that means so much to you? Finding the right mix of “peace of mind” and economic value for the services rendered to a frail loved one can be a difficult situation. Often times, families searching for care for a loved one are lured in with incentives such as special introductory rates and waived entrance fees. Only to find that considerations for specific care weren’t accounted for causing additional fees quickly escalating the overall cost of care. To avoid surprise expenses it is imperative that families carefully explore all options available. This can seem to be a daunting task but in the end the security of knowing your care choice is one that you can feel good about long term is the worth the extra effort. A move can be hard on an aging loved one, every effort made to assure it is a positive long term decision will be worth it. Hearthstone Personal Care
’ve always loved my mom’s smile, but this time last year she made a new patient appointment at my office under an assumed name, an alias! After the initial surprise and laughter, we decided to proceed JORDAN as usual. I guess she was ready to restore her smile to its former glory. At each new patient appointment we take a series of 10 facial and intraoral photos and an x-ray to observe the roots and bone level. After reviewing the information and discussing the options, we proposed a treatment plan involving Invisalign. She decided to go for it, so we scanned her teeth with our intraoral scanner (no impressions!) and sent her scan with our detailed prescription to Invisalign. A few weeks later we received the complete set of aligners and placed some attachments on some of her teeth (she refers to them as barnacles). Each aligner is worn for 1 or 2 weeks and moves your teeth .25 mm. My mom had a total of 22 active aligners and 6 overcorrection
aligners. We delivered three or four aligners at a time and sanded between her lower teeth a little as was prescribed. I am so proud of my mom, Peggy Jordan, and she loves her newly restored smile! ■

he Surgeon General's Report on Oral Health states that good oral health is essential to good general health. And specifically for women, a growing body of research has linked gum disease to a variety of health problems that affect women. Because gum disease is a bacterial infection, it can enter the bloodstream and may be a factor in causing other health complications: • Heart disease: People with gum disease may be more at risk for heart disease and have nearly twice the risk of having a fatal heart attack. Heart disease is also the number one killer of American women.1 • Stroke: One study found a casual relationship of oral infections as a risk factor for stroke.2 • Diabetes: People with diabetes are more likely to have gum disease and may make it more difficult for diabetics to control their blood sugar. Gum disease may also be a risk factor for diabetes, even in otherwise healthy indviduals.3 • Respiratory problems: Bacteria that grow in the oral cavity can travel to the lungs causing respiratory disease such as pneumonia - especially in people with gum disease.4 • Pregnancy outcomes: Pregnant women who have gum disease may be more likely to have a baby born too early or too small. Gum disease may also trigger increased levels of biological fluids that induce labor.4 Because gum disease is usually painless, many women may not even realize they have it until it reaches an advanced state. Your best defense is to brush and floss daily and see your dentist regularly. How do My Oral Health Needs Change Throughout My Life? Women have special oral health requirements during the unique phases in their lives. Changes in female hormone levels during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause exaggerate the way gums react to plaque. So at these times, women need to be especially thorough when brushing and flossing every day in order to prevent gum disease. Other important information you should know: • Menstruation — some women find that their gums swell and bleed prior
to their periods, while others experience cold sores or canker sores. These symptoms usually go away once your period starts. REMALEY • Oral contraceptives — inflamed gums are one of the most common side effects. • Pregnancy — studies show many pregnant women experience pregnancy gingivitis, when dental plaque builds up on the teeth and irritates the gums. Symptoms include red, inflamed and bleeding gums. Prenatal care is especially important. • Menopause — oral symptoms experienced during this stage of a women's life include red or inflamed gums, oral pain and discomfort, burning sensations, altered taste sensations and dry mouth. • Osteoporosis — a number of studies have suggested a link between osteoporosis and bone loss in the jaw. Researchers suggest this may lead to tooth loss because the density of the bone that supports teeth may be decreased. When combined with gum disease, osteoporosis speeds up the process of bone loss around the teeth. Your mouth is the gateway to your body and is directly related to all systemic problems. Maintaining good oral health habits now is especially important because unhealthy bacteria in the mouth not only can harm your teeth and gums but may be associated with serious medical conditions. Research has shown that infections in the mouth may be associated with heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pneumonia and other health problems that are common in older adults. It really only takes a few simple steps, including brushing and flossing at least twice daily, visiting your dentist regularly and eating a healthy diet. Roswell Dental Care can help you keep that healthy smile for a lifetime. Dr. David Remaley has been treating patients like family for over 30 years in Roswell and the North Atlanta area. .We ALWAYS welcome new patients. 5 Signs that a Family Caregiver is burnt-out By SUE MCCORMICK Synergy Homecare
H
as caregiving for a loved one taken a toll on you? Caregiving for a loved one can be one of the most rewarding jobs on the earth. You learn what it truly means to be selfless. But eventually being available at all hours of the night, sacrificing your own life, and putting your needs second begins to take a toll. No this doesn’t mean you are a bad person! It means that eventually we all burnout a little and we need to find a way to recharge our engines. Maybe you need a weekend off where you bring in a professional to help, or possibly another family member can step up and take some of the pressure off. Many times the signs of burnout can be tough to notice. Here are five simple things you can look for to know when it’s time to get some extra help. 1. Mood Changes Everyone can be a little moody, but constant changes in your mood might mean that you are getting a little burnt out. Sometimes it can feel like you are so busy caring for someone else that nobody is caring about you. Well first and foremost you need to care about yourself! It’s impossible take care of anyone if you are neglecting yourself. Bringing positive energy when caring for someone else is extremely important. 2. Memory Loss Forgot what you ate for breakfast? Can’t remember the last time you took a shower relaxed for a couple mins? Caregiving can make your life feel like it’s moving a mile a minute. It’s easy to lose track of your own life and daily routine. Try to find a healthy routine that not only has you worrying about all your caregiving tasks, but let’s you take some time to reflect about your own day. 3. Illness If you find yourself getting constantly
sick, that may be a sign that you are going too hard and too fast. The human body can only take so much abuse and eventually your body can start fighting against McCormick itself. Constant stress and depression can lead to illnesses. Listen to your body and make sure you are evaluating your health. The last thing you want to do is get a loved one sick as well. 4. Skipping Meals Skipping meals is never a good option. The one thing every caregiver needs to get through the day is energy and there is only once source of energy in the human body! Skipping meals can lead to all types of medical issues and mood changes. Make sure you keep you body fueled to get you through the day. 5. Sleep Deprivation Sometimes when you are night time caregiver it can be very difficult to get a proper night's rest. Still your body needs it’s sleep to function properly. If you find yourself unable to sleep at night, take a nap, or even settle your thoughts before bed that may be a sign it’s time to take a step back. Remember these are only a couple of symptoms that you may be suffering from caregiver burnout. Most importantly you need to listen to your body and make sure you know when it’s time to ask for help! Sue McCormick and Stacy Fotos are the owners of Synergy HomeCare North Atlanta and provide non-medical homecare to the seniors in the North Metro Atlanta area.
