Workplace romance leads to wedding bells By CANDY WAYLOCK

or many happy couples, the office often serves as the intersection of career paths and wedding aisles, and happily-ever-afters. Such was the setting for Milton native Blake Swayne (our cover bride) and Richard Thomas Fisk, III, (RT) who are busy planning an October wedding. They first met in 2015 when Blake, a 2014 graduate of Georgia Southern University, took a position in sales for a hotel in Jacksonville, Fla. There she met RT, a key executive at the hotel and someone she would work closely with on a daily basis as part of the small management team. “He was the assistant general manager, and I was the new cute sales coordinator — we worked five feet away from each other five days a week,” Swayne laughed. Love at first sight? Not exactly, but close. “I wouldn’t say ‘at first sight,’ but it didn’t take long for me to realize

I’m so glad they found each other... they are a perfect match.

how kind, thoughtful and generous RT was to everyone around him,” Swayne said. “He caught my eye not long after I started working there.” For RT, the interest was a bit more immediate, sparked by Blake’s personality and a laugh that left a mark from the beginning. “Blake definitely caught me off guard the first time we met,” said Fisk, who never imagined a love connection at work would lead to marriage. “I can’t say that I knew [immediately] she was the one for me, but I knew there was something special about this girl.” The two soon began to date, with the first test of the relationship coming just a few months later with a job opportunity for Fisk several states away. That prompted Blake to seriously evaluate the relationship and realize he was the man she wanted to be with, and possibly marry. “[I knew] when he told me he was offered a job in Virginia and moving away,” said Blake of the moment the thought of permanence entered her mind. “I knew I would be looking for a man like RT for the rest of my life, and I would be stupid to let him go.” She made the decision to move to Virginia with RT, knowing the opportunity put him closer to his home and family. For RT, her decision made the move even better. “Telling Blake about this great job opportunity was tough and complicated because it meant I would be moving,” said RT, who grew up in Virginia and graduated from Virginia Tech. “When Blake told me she was moving up to Virginia to be with me, I knew that she was committed to us. She took a huge leap of faith on me, and that meant a lot to me.” The relationship strengthened from that point, and RT made the decision to propose to Blake around the Christmas holidays, surrounded by her family and the people she loved. “I really wanted Blake to be surprised,” said RT “Every December she takes a trip to New York with some of her family, so I thought that would be the perfect opportunity.” He called her father, Greg Swayne, and stepfather, Kurt Pacey, to ask for their blessing, found the perfect ring, and carefully prepared what he wanted to say to her when he proposed. The plans nearly were upended when the bag carrying the ring did not arrive on their flight to New York City – but was located soon after. Working with her family, RT found the perfect proposal site, a raised area of sidewalk on the corner of 6th Avenue and W 55th Street, next to a fountain and in front of a lighted Christmas tree. Walking with Blake to dinner, RT took her to “their spot” on the premise of getting a photo, then dropped to his knees and pulled out the ring. “Her tears made my hands shake even more, but luckily I didn’t drop the ring before putting it on her finger, and that’s where it’s been ever since,” RT said. For Blake, who never suspected the trip to New York would end with a ring, the element of surprise was real. “It was perfect and everything I thought a proposal would be,” she said. For mom, Suzanne Pacey, it was the perfect ending to their courtship and the perfect beginning to their new life. “I’m so glad they found each other...they are a perfect match,” said Suzanne, who lives in Milton. “RT is the person I would have picked for her...he loves her so much.” Blake and RT recently purchased a home in Staunton, Va., where they share space with their new puppy and keep busy with home projects on the weekends. Blake works as the group sales manager at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel, and RT is employed as the assistant general manager of White’s Travel Center. They are planning their Oct. 21 wedding at Winridge Manor in Lynchburg and are already looking to the future...and possible expansion plans. “We have our hands full right now, but eventually, children are definitely on the table. I know our parents are chomping at the bit to have some grandkids running around, so that is definitely something in the five-year plan,” Blake laughed. ■

“All cakes are not equal”

Sweet Events has unique offering of wedding cakes By KATHLEEN STURGEON

kathleen@appenmediagroup.com

B

aking is a piece of cake for Susan Thompson. The owner of Sweet Events bakery in Johns Creek has been trimming cakes since the age of 16 when she first started working as a cake decorator at a Dairy Queen. A local baker taught her how to do some garnishing, and she was hooked. Later on, she went to school to study accounting and ventured into the corporate world, eventually making her way up to a senior management position. All the while, she was continuing to make cakes on the side as a hobby mostly. But in 2014, she decided to make her passion a full-time focus and left her job to create Sweet Events. “It just wore on you, and there was not a lot of joy in my life,” Thompson said. “I had to sit back and think about what brings me joy and what can I support myself with. Baking really came back to the forefront. I enjoy helping people make something that is already special to them even more special.” Getting to see the couple’s joy is a big factor for Thompson. She wanted to create more positive experiences for clients. “It’s really about making that day special,” she said. “Seeing the bride and groom’s faces light up is so awesome.” Part of making the experience special is creating unique orders, something she’s able to do by having her own business. She’s able to offer couple’s what they want, rather than being restricted by bakery limitations. “At a custom bakery, we can adjust the level of sweetness and make the cake look exactly like you want it to look, not what fits into our pricing models,” Thompson said. “If the cake is a big deal to you, it is worth going with a custom bakery that is going to spend the time and make the cake exactly what you want. It’s going to be more expensive, not that much more, but you’re going to get exactly what you want.” All cakes are not equal between a grocery store, a bakery or a custom bakery like Sweet Events. A lot of times, couples get something that tastes great, but is pretty plain looking .Or something that looks incredible but isn’t tasty. And cheap is not always good, Thompson said. “It’s all about the bride and groom and what’s unique about them and what they like,” she said. “I try to incorporate all of that. A franchise or a store bakery is very set in what they can offer. They can’t go outside the box because everything is set to manage costs and have certain hours spent on a cake, and that’s it. With a custom bakery that’s not the case.” With all of this flexibility, Thompson is able to offer almost anything a couple might want. Clients choose from three packages: classic, expressions and dream cake, to determine how elaborate they want their dessert to be. She’s able to deliver the creation for free for 15 miles, but past that, she charges a fee and sometimes suggests they might want to get their cake closer to the reception. She holds consultations with the couples leading up to the big day, but she can scrap the plan and start over up to three weeks before the wedding. “There are trends out there, but if those don’t fit you that’s fine,” Thompson said. “There is something out there that will fit you better and will be really cool. A custom bakery can sit down and be creative with you.” One of her most recent cakes included traditional cake as a layer, but also brownies – because that’s the bride’s favorite – and cheesecake – because the groom doesn’t eat cake. She’s currently working on a dessert bar for a wedding where the couple is only offering sweets and no sit-down dinner. “There’s just so much you can do,” Thompson said. “The big part of it is getting past the boundary of what is typical, and going into what we can do. It’s like the perfect combination of Legos and Play-Doh, with engineering and conforming the food form to what the client wants.” Working out of her home is another unique aspect to Sweet Events. Thompson is able to have clients come over to discuss their choices, deliver completed cakes without store hour restrictions and will soon be offering classes to teach cake decorating techniques, like icing. “It’s about making it really special for the couple,” she said. “They might not get custom guidance from other places. We sit and discuss all the aspects of what the cake will look like. I want the best for your wedding.” To learn more about Sweet Events, visit sweeteventsjc.com or facebook.com/pg/SweetEventsJohnsCreek. ■

drawings of the human body, and established his first business venture. That led to several other projects and new adventures that have kept him busy ever since. His most important role currently is “father of the bride,” as he helps plan the upcoming wedding of his daughter, Blake, who graces our cover this month.

When did you move to North Fulton, and for what reason?

We moved to North Fulton in 2000 to get out of the bustle of Buckhead and enjoy the openness of the land and smaller town feel of the area which we wanted for our children. Combined with its excellent public and private schools, close enough to Atlanta and close enough to the mountains of North Georgia where we spend much of our time on weekends.

How did your career in medical illustration begin? Northside Man: Greg Swayne, medical illustrator, entrepreneur City of Residence: Milton Hometown: Grosse Point, Michigan College: University of South Carolina; Medical College of Georgia (masters in Medical Illustration) Career: Co-creator and founder of A.D.A.M. and other technology-based companies Family: Wife, Lisa; 2 daughters, Blake and Nora; son, Tanner

10 | northsidewoman.com | february2017

As a young medical illustrator doing freelance work in the late 1980s, I began experimenting with early digital illustration. Many of my clients were seeking anatomy illustrations and it seemed a digital library might be a very useful tool. I assembled a team of 10 illustrators, and after several years we assembled an entire human body in computer format, which allowed the user to see the entire body, layer by layer. A.D.A.M. (Animated Dissection of Anatomy for Medicine) quickly became the industry leader, used by Yahoo health, AOL health and WebMD to name a few.

What keeps you busy today?

Following my retirement from A.D.A.M. in 1999, I joined

Blake with her dad, Greg, in Central Park last year.

up with Jeff Arnold, who founded WebMD, and worked closely with him to build several other companies including HowStuffWorks.com and Sharecare, a social Q&A healthcare platform created by Jeff and Dr. Mehmet Oz. Today, I work with innovative startup companies in the area to assist them in navigating the various growth phases that start-ups and middle-stage companies move through.

So what is it like to be the Father of the Bride?

I am happy and proud to see Blake getting married, but I am also very grateful she has found a man who I know will always put her first. They are a great pairing and I am looking forward to the wedding day itself and to the many family times ahead with Blake and R.T.

And finally, what advice are you giving to your daughter as she starts a new life chapter?

My hope for Blake and R.T. is that they always grow together. My advice for them is to build shared interests and never lose sight of what makes a successful marriage which is to put each other first…before work… before children…before all else…put each other first. ■

ree bridal shoes By LORI WYNNE Style Contributor

O

ne of the most consequential purchases a bride will make for her wedding day is her pair of wedding shoes. Her shoes will determine how gracefully she can move through an extremely demanding event. She will stand, walk, and dance. She may ascend or descend a grand staircase and may need to climb in and out of vehicles, cross lawns, bridges, and uneven terrain, navigating both indoor carpeting and hard ballroom floors. All of this in a dress that usually has more volume, length, and weight than her day-to-day clothing. Her wedding dress will be hemmed to only one pair of shoes. If she changes heel elevations part way through the event, her skirt will drape differently causing bunching, dragging or even tripping. Ideally, the bride should choose a single pair of shoes that can carry her throughout all the challenges of her day. If her shoes are uncomfortable, they can ruin her wedding experience, subtly undermining her confidence, making her appear wobbly, nervous, or even awkward. And, as we all know, foot pain can drain the joy out of any special occasion.

So what to do?

Lady Jane Custom Footwear has been providing lovely pain-free dress shoes for nearly 10 years, and is a great resource for the wedding party. An entirely woman-owned enterprise, Lady Jane produces hand-made custom shoes in the United States. Atlanta resident Mary Jane Caldwell founded the company dedicated to the idea that women at every age should be able to enjoy gorgeous dress shoes that stop or significantly reduce the pain and damage that are inherent in designer fashion shoes. Her podiatrist orthopedic surgeon approved designs incorporate superior NASA-developed cushioning and shock-absorbing materials. Straps, ties and a variety of heel heights and toe shapes help insure an individualized fit. She also has developed special designs to deal with pre-existing foot issues. Her collection of over 100 materials and leathers Mary Jane Caldwell founder of Lady can coordinate with any gown or outfit. Each pair Jane Custom Footwear. of shoes is made to the customer’s individual specifications. Production time requires about eight weeks. The base price for all the styles averages around $400. If extra labor, such as extensive pattern revision, is needed or if the order is rushed, there are additional charges. Not a fan of high heels? Lady Jane Customer Footwear has designed a low-heeled shoe that replaces ballet flats. Everyone knows that ballet flats are not that comfortable because they do not offer arch support and can lead to plantar fasciitis from the constant pressure on the heel bone. Her patented design allows a roomy toe-box, a minimal heel for proper posture, stride and over-all foot comfort. The best part is the many fabric and leather options available to a bride. A bride chooses a gown that reflects her individual style, her wedding shoes should reflect the same. ■

Anthology brings women together

Local women share stories in book By KATHLEEN STURGEON

kathleen@appenmediagroup.com

F

eeling beautiful in one’s skin is something many women struggle with daily. From puberty, to pregnancy to growing older, at some point in every woman’s life she may not feel her best. The anthology, “Beautiful in My Skin: An Anthology in Learning to Love Yourself,” is seeking to help women when they need inspiration. The book is a collection of stories from 21 women from all walks of life. The first volume was launched in September 2016. The stories were compiled by Tiffany Lovell, a life coach, young mother of five and a woman who “had her own incredible journey to loving herself,” according to one of the contributors, Lori Wynne. Wynne, a Milton resident, penned a section in the book titled, “How I became a fashion consultant, one stitch at a time.” “(The women) share their journeys of selfacceptance, feeling beautiful in their skin and having the courage to be the person they were meant to be and fulfilling their life’s missions,”

14 | northsidewoman.com | february2017

Wynne said. “All of the stories share a different journey for each woman. Some are spiritual journeys, others are more pragmatic. There is something for every woman in this book. I think of it as a ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ for women looking to fulfill their life mission through self-acceptance.” Wynne was invited to contribute to the book because of her line of work as a personal wardrobe consultant. “I help people every day look and feel their personal best,” she said. “I truly believe that when you feel confident in what you are wearing, you exude confidence, and that confidence comes back to you by how others treat you.” In the book, Wynne talks about her own experiences learning about fashion, sewing, life lessons from her mother and finding new passions, topics a lot of women can relate to. Still, Wynne wondered if she would be a good fit for the book. She thought her story had to be about overcoming a big trial or struggle in her life. She didn’t let her doubts stop her, though, and she felt her message for women to follow their passion to a fruitful career, regardless of age, was powerful.

“While my life hasn’t been trouble-free, I refuse to have those dark times define me,” Wynne said. “(Lovell) encouraged me to share my journey to my profession and what advice I would give to women who were searching for their own life mission. Looking back over my life, I see how my different life experiences led me to the positive place I am now. It’s never too late to pursue a new talent or passion.” And while this isn’t the only book of its kind, the raw honesty in each story speaks to all kinds of women of different ages, Wynne said. A second volume is currently in the works. “There are golden nuggets for each reader to glean and learn from,” she said. “After the book went to print and started to sell, the curator had many women who came to her to ask if she will do another volume. They have stories to share and wanted to be included, too.” ■

things to do the night before your wedding day

T

ou’ve crossed off one thing after another on your wedding to-do lists, but now as the day approaches in less than 24 hours, here are five things to remember to do before you climb into your wedding dress and let out a confident “I Do” to your very own prince charming.

& w tip s f o om r en

3. Get a good night’s sleep

Or at least try to tuck yourself underneath those covers at a decent hour.

4. Write a love note to your groom Something short and sweet. Reminding the guy who will be waiting for you in a freshly-cleaned tux that he is the love of your entire life.

5. Say a big “thank you”

Before the wedding-day chaos kicks in, be sure to thank people in advance for sticking by your side through this adventure. Give an extra hug to your bridesmaids and pop a kiss on the cheeks of your family members. ■ Source: www.brides.com

1. Eat a healthy meal

Though the greasy pizza and the bag of cool ranch Doritos might be screaming your name, stick to the fresh fruit and the whole grains. They won’t have you waking up with a food hangover like a Big Mac and a side of fries will on your wedding day.

2. Pack a bag or clutch of personal items.

Put together your reception clutch and your post-reception bag and hand it off to your wedding point person, who can help make sure it’s waiting for you in the bridal suite or in your hotel room. Toss a bunch of must-have items into a small tote bag in case anyone needs them. Grab a handful of Band-Aids, safety pins, packets of Advil, and of course hair ties.

If you can dream it... we can create it!

How to include your pet in your wedding BY CANDY WAYLOCK

& Tails! I

candy@northsidewoman.com

n one of the more memorable scenes in the movie “Bridesmaids,” golden retriever puppies are given as parting gifts at the wedding shower, much to the delight of Melissa McCarthy’s character who scoops up seven. While the scene garnered lots of laughs, the fact is pets are part of a growing number of weddings for today’s brides and grooms who consider their pets an important part of their family. For LT Townson, an Alpharetta-based wedding planner, the request to include pets in weddings is not unusual among many of her clients. “I get several requests a year to include a pet, mostly dogs used as ring bearers,” said Townson of House of BASH. Townson has been a wedding planner for seven years. Venues are generally accommodating, and Townson said she has never had an issue with having four-legged guests among the celebrants. Of course, additional planning is always required when dealing with pets who may have a mind of their own. “We just make sure we know the details of who is ‘handling’ the pet prior to [and after] the ceremony, who is walking the dog down the aisle, ensuring the photo schedule accommodates the pets, and other planning that takes everything into consideration,” Townson noted. But still, the decision to include your pet does require serious thought, and it depends on a number of variables to ensure their presence does not disrupt the happy day. Here are a few things to consider from bridalguide. com before walking down the aisle with Fido (or Fluffy).

Does your venue allow pets?

While most private facilities set their own rules and may be more amenable, public facilities, such as parks and community centers, may have “no pet” rules that might not be waived for weddings and receptions. If that is the case, consider including them in the pre- and post-wedding photos so they will always be a part of the memories. Just make sure you find out well ahead of time the rules of the venue to avoid an issue on the wedding day.

How will your pet react?

Is your pet social or a serious scaredy-cat? Don’t put your pet into a situation that stresses them out and potentially disrupts your entire ceremony. Go through several “dry runs” before the day to get them used to the scene. Consider limiting the time the pet is in the spotlight, have a quiet place they can go, and make sure there is a handler assigned to the pet the entire time so the bride and groom can enjoy their day.

Carefully consider “dressing up” your pet

Your wedding may not be the time to put the tuxedo and tiara on your pets if they are not used to wearing costumes or clothing. The experience (and stress) of so many new sights and sounds may be aggravated if they are uncomfortable. Again, the costumes can be quickly incorporated into photos if you really want your pooch in a tux with tails.

Let your guests know pets will be included

While you may love and adore your pet, others may have allergies or simply a fear of animals. So letting guests know your pets will be included allows them to be seated away from the pets, or have the opportunity to come with allergy medications close by. ■

F

or nearly two decades, the Village Tavern restaurant in Alpharetta has been the go-to place for special occasions, celebrations or simply a night out with friends and family. But many people would be surprised to learn that while the restaurant is certainly a North Fulton institution, it is part of a national chain of restaurants with locations in seven states and overseas.

2. 3.

The concept, though global, is unique Kevin Buckley, genera l manager in each location, said Kevin Buckley, of Village Tavern in Alp haretta. general manager of Village Tavern in Alpharetta. “Each individual restaurant is different in design, and the feel and look of one is different from the other,” Buckley said. “Our menus are regional specific, and we strive for that ‘neighborhood feel’...not cookie cutter.” At Village Tavern in Alpharetta, Buckley said the aim is a “polished casual restaurant” without the pretentious or stuffy feel of similar upscale restaurants. Here, diners can relax among friends and family, enjoying good food, service and value. “We want our guests to walk away with a memorable experience...not just a meal,” he said. Village Tavern opened on Haynes Bridge Road in Alpharetta 17 years ago. While some menu items have come and gone, many remain from the original menu providing the consistency that Buckley said is a focus of the restaurant. He noted the menu is reviewed on a consistent basis, allowing Village Tavern to stay on top of dining trends, and to keep the menu fresh and vibrant. New to the menu include a host of

gh consistency appetizers, flatbreads and a group of “Tavern specialties” that are often rotated. The dessert menu has also expanded over the years as diners look for new after-dinner options. But there are a few selections that Buckley said will likely always be available on the menu, and which brings customers back time and again. “If we removed our shrimp and grits, we might see a small revolt,” laughed Buckley, referring to the mainstay ensemble of sautéed jumbo shrimp, applewood smoked bacon, mushrooms, green onions, organic stone ground grits and Gruyere cheese. He points to the consistency in every aspect of Village Tavern as a key part to the success of the restaurant, from the service, to the food, to the affordability and value. “We have been successful with

integrating ourselves into the Alpharetta community,” Buckley said. “A location convenient to work and homes, but worth the long drive to come and see.” He knows the lifespan of most restaurants is short, noting the vast majority of restaurants close within five years of opening. But for those that defy the odds, like Village Tavern, the success formula is relatively simple – find what brings people back again. “[It happens] first by being a great place to work,” said Buckley, emphasizing how important the customer service aspect is for success. “Happy employees give great experiences.”

Looking to the future, Buckley said there is little reason to change what’s working for Village Tavern, other than continuing to build upon a solid foundation. “There is no need to reinvent the wheel; however we are always striving to improve upon it,” he said, noting a patio addition will open this spring, and the catering options will expand. “And, always, we will look for ways to [consistently deliver] an immaculate experience at Village Tavern for our customers.” ■

Julie Haley focuses on ‘culture’ with Edge Solutions By CANDY WAYLOCK

candy@appenmediagroup.com

A

s co-founder and CEO of Edge Solutions, Julie Haley is focused on creating a company that measures success through integrity, diversity and community service—not dollars. “We solve our customers’ problems with technology; we are agnostic, creative, and bring the best innovation to our customers early, so they can shine,” said Haley, a former attorney who founded Edge Solutions in 2008 with husband, Michael, an information technology executive. The Haleys opened Edge Solutions after deciding their complimentary work styles would work well in a joint venture. “We both had suffered from [previous] toxic work environments, and we wanted to surround ourselves with positive, entrepreneurial people who enjoy solving problems, and build a culture where we all looked forward to Mondays,” said Haley. They opened their firm right before the economy tanked, leading to the demise of numerous tech start-ups in the aftermath. “By then, we had obtained the necessary certifications, had a small credit line, had hired our first two employees...there was no turning back!” said Haley, who moved to North Fulton in 1993. But the downturn had an upside for Edge Solutions, which was able to hire top tech talent who, through no fault of their own, notes Haley, found themselves looking for employment. The company opened in a 110-year-old former warehouse off Old Roswell Street in downtown Alpharetta, with affordable rent to keep overhead low. “It was a mess!” laughs Haley. “But we fixed it up with IKEA, used furniture and had our kids’ friends helping us paint.” Edge Solutions now occupies the entire upstairs, and is comfortably ensconced among the more than 600 tech firms which also call Alpharetta home.

Julie Haley, co-founder and CEO of Edge Solutions.

“Alpharetta is booming, and we are now surrounded by artists, amazing restaurants and food trucks---our vendors and clients love visiting,” said Haley. A native of Washington, D.C., Haley was the daughter of public school teachers, and spent three years in Greece where her parents taught at an international school. There, her view of the world expanded. “We would travel every weekend, holiday and summer in our Volkswagen camper,” recalls Haley of her time overseas. “Those years were so impactful---and raised my curiosity and risk-taking quotient.” Her interest in technology is rooted in her early days as an attorney where she would spend hours deep in research in law libraries. When Lexis Nexis came out with the first search engine for legal issues, a lightbulb went off. “It didn’t take long to realize that technology is making the biggest, most positive impact in every industry and in every profession,” said Haley, who now counts Lexis Nexis among her clients. In the technology field, she has found the perfect environment for a personality that craves innovation and optimism. “I went to law school with rose-colored dreams of saving the oppressed and changing the world,” said Haley, a 1987 graduate of the South Carolina School of Law. “But it was not satisfying. Lawyers are rewarded for how many hours they bill, rather than how well they help their clients.” She does not see herself as a pioneer for women in technology, saying many came before her, opening the doors and fighting the early battles. But she does worry that the needle has barely moved on the number of women in tech jobs– despite years of focus on the issue. “Only a quarter of today’s technology jobs are held by women, so I have been very active in Georgia’s Women in Technology Association,” said Haley, who was named the organization’s Woman of the Year in 2015. Her interest in education is as strong as her interest in education. After moving to North Fulton, she hung up her law shingle while she raised her two children, and became highly involved in improving public education for Georgia’s children. “I am passionate about education, because providing a quality education for all children is the best way to support an informed citizenry, thriving democracy, and a booming economy,” said Haley, who worked with the North Fulton PTA Board and the Georgia PTA. She mentors young women, gives talks and seminars at area schools, and has established an annual $5,000 college scholarship to a women going into the tech field. Haley also serves on the Board of Directors for Gwinnett Technical College. Looking to the future, Haley sees Edge Solutions continuing to grow, but always under local control. She believes handing ownership to outside entities (who regularly call with buyout offers) would disrupt the established culture. “Our employees are like family,” said Haley. “Eventually, maybe 10 years down the road, we will consider selling to our deserving employees. I always like to ‘dance with those who brought you’!” ■

Interiors

orth Atlanta is a hub for trendy-yet-refined interior decor. With plenty of brick and mortar stores to choose from, the difficult part is picking which styles best reflect your personality and taste. Below, experts offer their views on designing for the Life Styles of today.

Selecting bedroom furniture: king, queen or.....

W

hen assisting my clients in making furniture selections for the bedroom I always stress the importance of space planning. Many costly mistakes can be avoided when precise measurements are taken. Determine the placement of the bed keeping in mind the difference in dimensions between a king, California king and queen size bed. A king size bed usually measures 85 W x 90 D, a California king is longer and measures 94 D. A queen size bed usually measures 67 W x 90 D and there is not a California queen. Beds will vary in height depending upon their style and mattress being used. A platform style bed will always be lower than a panel or posted bed. Complete beds which include headboards, side rails and foot boards, will be higher than a headboard attached to a mattress frame. Choosing a bed is much like finding the perfect chair, comfort, style and functionality all play in determining the perfect fit. A current trend is the upholstered bed, available in many frame choices from tufted to tailored with a

great selection of fabrics to choose from. Do not be afraid to select fabrics, most can be treated by a guaranteed protection plan. After you have decided on your bed consider the space you have available on either side for night stands. Here are some guidelines to consider regarding bedside tables keep the height even or slightly below the height of the mattress. Keep in mind that bachelor’s chests are always larger than night stands and can provide extra storage while making a stunning statement when space permits. Night stand dimensions range from 30 W/ 32 W, while bachelor’s chests measure 38 W/40 W. Whether you choose symmetry or would like to use two different bedside pieces be sure they are equal in height and in proportion to one another. Be sure to balance your lighting on either side of the bed. I often add artwork or mirrors over the nightstands and chests bringing another visual dimension to the room. If drawer space is needed a dresser and chest of drawers may be added to the

room, many bedrooms have large closets and extra storage in not a necessity. You may want to choose a console or media chest to bring balance to the room. I prefer to use a freestanding or wall mounted full length mirror rather than placing

He is a 6-month old retriever mix who was rescued by Angels Among Us Pet Rescue and is now searching for his forever home. He weighs about 35 pounds now, and will likely be only 50 pounds when he is fully grown. His foster mom says he is nearly housetrained, loves his crate and will stay there quietly, and enjoys walks and car rides. He is a retriever, so a house with lots of activities, and maybe hikes in the woods, would be the perfect home for Capulet. Newly Engaged! New Smile!

By DR. JEFFREY JORDAN

I

nvesting in a healthy, beautiful smile may be one of the smartest moves brides and grooms can make as they plan their big day! Advances in orthodontic treatment can offer a beautiful smile faster, and more affordably, than ever before. Long after the flowers have faded and the reception lights are dimmed, a gorgeous smile is a gift that stays with you happily ever after. Clear aligners and tooth colored braces made with ceramic brackets are practically invisible, and these are popular options for adults. Even the orthodontic wires can be tooth colored so people don’t even notice that you are in treatment. The time between appointments is now longer than it used to be, usually six weeks, due to improved treatment mechanics. That is good news for working people. More good news is how quickly patients begin to see an improvement in their smile. One in four patients is now an adult! The American Association of Orthodontists attributes the rise in adult orthodontics to the improved selfesteem and self-confidence that comes 28 | northsidewoman.com | february2017

with orthodontic treatment. Patients tell us their social lives improve after treatment, and we can see the changes that happen as people just smile more often and with more self-confidence. Jordan Affordability of treatment is a frequent question, and there is good news here too. Orthodontists are one of the few healthcare professionals that offer payment plans, making monthly payments quite manageable over the treatment time. Many employers are including adult orthodontic coverage in their dental plans in addition to Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) that allow employees to set aside pre-tax dollars that can cover treatment. At the end of the day, this is a lifetime investment in your health and appearance. Your wedding day is a perfect opportunity to have the ‘picture perfect’ smile! Your wedding day is also probably the most photographed day of your life. Why not make those photos sparkle forever with a healthy, beautiful smile? ■

ne inclusive fee. No levels of care and a 2 year rent Guarantee. All this to simplify your life! Does it seem like your loved one’s need for care is continually changing along with the cost associated with that care? Are you caught off guard with additional expenses during these tough economic times? Are you questioning how long you will be able to afford quality care for someone that means so much to you? Finding the right mix of “peace of mind” and economic value for the services rendered to a frail loved one can be a difficult situation. Often times, families searching for care for a loved one are lured in with incentives such as special introductory rates and waived entrance fees. Only to find that considerations for specific care weren’t accounted for causing additional fees quickly escalating the overall cost of care. To avoid surprise expenses it is imperative that families carefully explore all options available. This can seem to be a daunting task but in the end the security of knowing your care choice is one that you can feel good about long term is the worth the extra effort. A move can be hard on an aging loved one, every effort made to assure it is a positive long term decision will be worth it. Hearthstone Personal Care Community prides itself on easing this process by providing peace of mind and financial certainty for our families thru transparency of care at one simple all-inclusive rate. A Homecoming: Dr. Brent Taylor returns to A Family, friends and the communities of north Atlanta are celebrating as Dr. Brent Taylor and his family have returned home to where they grew up and are starting a firstclass dermatology, Mohs surgery and vein care practice. Brent grew up in Roswell and attended Marist School where he was valedictorian. His wife Ashley was born and raised in Alpharetta and graduated from Milton High School. Together the Taylors are raising two rambunctious boys, Beckett 3, and Gavin 1. After completing twelve years of higher education, Dr. Taylor and his family explored life in Florida. He practiced as the Mohs surgeon at University of Florida in Gainesville and worked in the busiest private practice in Jacksonville, Florida. The desire to be with family and friends drew Dr. Taylor and his family home to north Atlanta. They are opening a practice in Alpharetta to serve the community that has for so long supported them.

Dr. Taylor’s resume is impressive to say the least. He graduated from Harvard College in 3 years and attended Vanderbilt School of Medicine on a full, merit-based scholarship. He received his first choices for postgraduate training and was able to work with renowned Mohs surgeons during both his residency at the Medical University of South Carolina and during his ACGME accredited fellowship in procedural dermatology at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California. He is double-boarded, board certified in dermatology and certified by the Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine in vein care. He is one of the first Mohs surgeons in Georgia to offer true Mohs surgery for melanoma with in-office specialized stains to detect cancer cells and maximize a patient’s chance of cure. Melanoma patients are treated and, in most cases, repaired within a single day. Generally, no outside pathology is needed.

Is the SMILE you see in the Mirror, the Smile you wish you had? By DR. R. DAVID REMALEY

C

osmetic dentistry is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve your appearance. A beautiful, bright, white and healthy smile can increase self confidence and overall life satisfaction. Many regular dental treatments can be cosmetic in nature and can enhance your existing smile. One of the easiest and quickest procedures is to professionally whiten your teeth. Other treatment including modern, BPA- free tooth-colored fillings are virtually invisible when compared to traditional silver fillings. Tooth-colored crowns or caps can be placed instead of gold or silver. Roswell Dental Care offers some of the best treatments available to greatly improve your smile and the way you feel about yourself. Our office offers exceptional combination of state-of-the-art technology with an overall wellness approach to dental health and appearance. Once you have achieved that cosmetic update it is vital that you take precautions to keep it beautiful. 1 Follow good oral hygiene practices. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss at least once daily to remove plaque. 2. Beware of many over the counter teeth bleaching products that are highly PH acidic. These products can cause tooth surface loss and sensitivity. 3. Limit your daily consumption of coffee, red wine and dark colored sodas and drinks such as cranberry juice tend to discolor and stain your teeth over time. After drinking these beverages, it is a good idea to clean and brush right after. 4. Blueberries, cherries and other highly pigmented foods tend to also discolor and stain your teeth over time. After eating these foods it is also a good

idea to clean and brush right after. 5. Should you choose to drink carbonated drinks and dark colored sodas do so with a straw! This will allow food dyes to bypass teeth altogether. 6. Don’t smoke. Besides staining your teeth, smoking causes bad breath and increases the risk of gum disease and numerous types of cancer. 7. Many foods act as natural detergents to clean teeth. Chewing foods like apples, carrots, strawberries and celery help to naturally maintain a healthier cleaner and whiter smile. 8. Chew sugarless gum, this helps clean the surfaces of your teeth by stimulating saliva in your mouth. 9. Drink lots of water! Rinse your mouth thoroughly. Oh, and some of us had to suffer the indignity of something known as “headgear.” And if that wasn’t enough, this “treatment” (more like torture) went on for years. But all that has changed with the advent of metalCorbett free orthodontics and, especially, a procedure known as Invisalign. With the Invisalign process, most patients can now achieve straight, properly aligned teeth without any of the ugly metal bands and brackets. And instead of the usual years, it can take as little as a few months. By using a series of clear, removable aligners, Invisalign straightens your teeth. Patients report that the aligners are nearly

Fighting isolation with technology

By SUE MCCORMICK SYNERGY HOMECARE

S

ometimes the most valuable gift you can give is your presence. To those who are socially isolated, a personal connection can be the most precious thing in the world. Millions of people 50 and older (about 1 in 5) are living in or at risk of isolation. This poses a health hazard equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Older isolated people have much higher rates of mortality from breast cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease and other chronic diseases. They are at greater risk for depression and dementia, emergency room visits and elder abuse. Any of us can wind up suffering from social detachment through such lifechanging events as giving up a driver’s license, losing a spouse or a job, taking on caregiving responsibilities or developing a chronic illness or disability. One way to reduce isolation is by using technology that can help someone stay in touch with family, friends and

the outside world. Although this is often intimidating to many older adults, there are ways to teach them without overwhelming them. There are so many resources available McCormick to our seniors that will give them the step by step processes to use computers, tablets and smart phones as methods of connection to friends and family. One company that is offering classes in the Metro Atlanta area is BLUE HAIR TECHNOLOGY https://bluehairtech.org/. This organization hosts classes in various places throughout the area and have helped hundreds of older adults navigate the new world of technology. Synergy HomeCare has a large roster of caregivers who go into your loved ones home to help them with daily living activities, many of which have the ability to teach them how to use this technology. Sue McCormick and Stacy Fotos are the owners of Synergy HomeCare North Atlanta and provide nonmedical homecare to the seniors in the North Metro Atlanta area. Their caregivers assist people of all ages with any activity of daily living and their goal is to keep your loved ones safe and in their home for as long as possible. Many times overthe-counter medications will resolve the issue. But, when in doubt, have your rash checked out. A less common condition, psoriasis, could be the culprit. An autoimmune disease, psoriasis causes raised, red, scaly patches to appear on the skin, affecting 125 million people – or two to three percent of the population. The disease, typically seen on the outside of the elbows or knees, and the scalp, can also appear on other areas of the body. Psoriasis and Children Symptoms in children include severe scaling of the scalp, diaper dermatitis, red and scaly patches on the trunk and extremities as well as pitting and discoloration of the nails. One-third to one-half of all young people with psoriasis may experience a flare-up two to six weeks after an earache, strep throat, bronchitis, tonsillitis or a respiratory infection. “The clinical spectrum of psoriasis can vary from few patches on elbows and knees to involving the whole body and the joints,” said May River dermatologist Dr. Paola Bonaccorsi M.D. Ph.D. “More and more we are learning that chronic inflammation associated with psoriasis predispose to heart disease and other systemic problems. “Psoriasis can have a huge psychological impact on both adults and kids,” Bonaccorsi said. “Science has given us wonderful new medication to manage psoriasis and give our patients the gift of clear skin.” May River Dermatology Johns Creek treats most diseases of the skin, hair and nails as well as diagnosis and management of skin cancer. The practice, located at 10160 Medlock Bridge Road is now accepting new patients. For more information please call 470282-5729 or visit www.mayriverdermatology.com ■
