ets are as much a member of a person’s family as their children, and Dr. Deborah Mitchell is determined to provide the same level of care for people’s furry friends. Mitchell is the founder and owner of Tides Mobile Vet, a company that brings pet care to the home. “Most veterinarians are inspired by their love of animals and science, but for me, it had as much to do with the human-animal bond,” Mitchell said. “There is nothing comparable. The love that people have for their pets is pure, and supporting that bond is my privilege.” Mitchell’s mobile vet practice can manage all non-emergency medical conditions, like skin and ear infections, gastrointestinal problems, allergies, arthritis, chronic diseases, pain management, vaccine programs, annual wellness exams and blood testing. “A mobile vet has many advantages for the client, their pet and for myself,” Mitchell said. “The personal one-on-one time of a veterinary house call allows for a more indepth interaction. Many pets are stressed by going into a veterinary hospital, or they struggle with mobility issues that make it hard for them to get in and out of a car. Imagine the logistical nightmare of bringing your three cats in for their annual exam. All that falls away with a house call.” She added that house calls allow her to address issues related to daily living, such as nutrition, weight management and

Young sisters publish kid-friendly cookbook By KIMBERLY TYSON

kimberly@appenmediagroup.com

A

s competitive cooking and baking shows with pint-sized contestants continue to pop up on television, it’s no wonder why sisters Esme, 12, and Calista Washburn, 17, were inspired to cook up a little book of their own to help young cooking enthusiasts and future chefs. The sisters entered the world of publishing with “20 Recipes Kids Should Know,” a collaborative effort between Esme, a middleschooler and amateur chef, and Calista, a recent high school graduate and aspiring 6 | northsidewoman.com | january2020

photographer. Esme’s passion for preparing delicious dishes was sparked by her grandmother, who taught her how to cook. Those lessons in the kitchen laid the foundation for what has become an avid interest in culinary arts, which continues to blossom as Esme gets older. “She started teaching me when I was little, and many of my favorite memories are of cooking with her,” Esme said in the book. “As I got older, I started to read cookbooks from cover to cover, as if I was reading a chapter book.” Big sister Calista not only provided a vivid portrait of each finished recipe, but also helped

her little sister in the kitchen by sampling all of the recipes Esme created. The girls, who reside in New York, realized that there was a need for a simple-to-follow cookbook that provided kids with basic cooking skills and easy, step-by-step instructions for complete meals. “Many of the cookbooks made for kids consisted of random recipes for snacks and sweets —and didn’t actually teach you how to make a meal,” said Esme. “20 Recipes Kids Should Know” offers its young readers detailed cooking instructions, safety tips, a measurement guide and a checklist to follow prior to starting a recipe and

after its completion, as well as a glossary of terms and cooking techniques – all of which help make the cooking process fun and easy. Filled with classic, gourmet recipes like Pancakes Two Ways, Creamiest Mac and Cheese, Mouthwatering Marinated Steak, Amazing Mashed Potatoes, Easy As Apple Pie (with a made-from-scratch crust), and Super Strawberry Shortcake (pictured), young cooks can expand their culinary skills by choosing breakfast, lunch, dinner, appetizer, side dish and dessert categories. Esme’s unique commentary colorfully illustrates each recipe. Throughout the cookbook, she shares a glimpse of her family life by attaching individual memories to each dish, along with storage tips, options for alternative ingredients and recommendations for garnishes. Young readers on every cooking level won’t be disappointed. “20 Recipes Kids Should Know” builds a solid foundation of cooking skills that will give kids a sense of accomplishment in the kitchen and set future chefs on the path to a successful culinary career. ■

For the biscuits 2 cups (260 g) unbleached all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 2 teaspoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt 1 1/2 cups (360 ml) heavy cream For the strawberries 1 1/2 pounds (680 g) fresh strawberries 2 tablespoons sugar For the whipped cream 1 1/2 cups (360 ml) heavy cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions Make the biscuits 1. Preheat the oven to 400ºF (200ºC). 2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Make sure the dry ingredients are thoroughly mixed together. 3. Add the heavy cream, and stir until the dough is almost fully together, about 30 seconds. 4. Place the dough on a lightly floured work surface and knead for about 30 seconds. 5. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough until ¾ to 1 inch (2 to 2.5 cm) thick. Be sure to rotate the dough every couple of rolls and to lightly flour the work surface as needed to prevent sticking. Don’t use too much flour! 6. Using a 3-inch (7.5 cm) round cookie cutter, cut the dough into 8 to 10 biscuits. Be sure to just press straight down, and do not twist the cutter. Pull away any excess dough, then re-roll it and cut more biscuits. 7. Place the biscuits on a baking sheet. Bake for 7 minutes, then rotate the baking sheet and continue baking until just golden brown, about 8 more minutes. 8. Remove the biscuits from the oven and, using a spatula, place the biscuits directly on the wire rack and let cool slightly, about 5 minutes. While the biscuits are baking, prepare the strawberries 1. Rinse the strawberries thoroughly. Cut off the green tops, then cut the strawberries into quarters and place in a medium bowl. 2. Add the sugar to the strawberries and stir. (If the strawberries are in season and very sweet, you don't need to add sugar.) With a fork, in the same bowl, crush about a quarter of the strawberries, then let all the strawberries and juice sit together in the bowl. Make the whipped cream 1. In a large bowl, use a large whisk to beat together the heavy cream and sugar. Add the vanilla extract and keep beating until the cream thickens and soft peaks form. Assemble the shortcakes 1. Split the cooled biscuits in half and place the bottoms on individual plates. Spoon a generous amount of strawberries on top of the biscuit bottoms and top with a small amount of whipped cream. Add the biscuit tops, plus more strawberries and a dollop of whipped cream, and serve. Note: Extra biscuits can be enjoyed on their own — they are delicious with butter. They can also be wrapped in a double layer of plastic bags and frozen for up to two months. january2020 | northsidewoman.com | 7

Get out and try dog sports in the new year By DR. JOANNE ROESNER Loving Hands Animal Clinic www.lovinghands.com

T

he new year is a time to start new habits and new hobbies. It’s a time to commit to health and wellness for both you and your pets. Dog sports are an endeavor that can meet this need. Sports encourage bonding, physical activity and promote health for both animal and human family members; and there are many different sports to suit the needs of any dog and owner. Agility is one sport with which many people are familiar. It involves both the handler and the dog, and is a very bonding experience. Using only voice and body signal commands, the handler directs the dog through a series of obstacles, which can include jumps, weave poles, teeter-totters, tunnels and A-frames. In competitions, contestants are graded on both accuracy and speed. It is truly exciting to watch. Any breed can participate in agility, but dogs who do best need a desire to run. A local group holds trials in the covered arena at Wills Park, if you wish to see this firsthand. Another well-known, but often not completely understood, dog sport is Schutzhund. This sport was developed in Germany as a test of German shepherds’ working ability for police work. Most people are familiar with the dramatic protection portion of Schutzhund, in which dogs subdue a person wearing a padded bite suit. But this is only a part of the sport. Dogs must also demonstrate 8 | northsidewoman.com | january2020

tracking ability by following a scent trail to find a specific article and alert the handler. In addition, they must demonstrate obedience in the presence of other dogs, people and gunshots as they navigate an obstacle course. Dogs that succeed at this sport typically have high drive, intense focus and an ability to respond to commands. Obedience training and competitions are other activities for dogs and owners. There are obedience classes at dog shows, and the American Kennel Club awards obedience titles. The first of these, the Canine Good Citizen, or CGC, is not awarded at a trial, but is tested by a certified trainer. In addition to performing basic commands, dogs must master 10 skilled behaviors, such as a five-minute stay in the absence of the owner, interaction with other dogs and people and appropriate reaction to distractions. Obedience trials are utilized to earn higher-level titles. Each title indicates proficiency in different higher-level behaviors. Other dog sports to consider are flyball, dock diving, disc dog, lure coursing and tracking. Flyball is a four-dog relay race in which dogs run a four-hurdle obstacle course, hit a spring-loaded box that throws out a ball, catch the ball and run the course back to the handler. Dogs with a good nose and high drive are perfect candidates for tracking. In this sport, a scent trail is laid and the participant is required to find the item or person whose scent is laid out. Lure coursing requires dogs to chase an

inanimate lure, which is pulled by a string on a spindle. The lure changes directions and makes turns during the course, and dogs must continue to follow. Dogs that enjoy swimming and jumping excel at the sport of dock diving. They are evaluated for the length of their jump off a dock after a thrown buoy. Previously called frisbee dog, disc dog sporting events involve retrieving a thrown disc. Dogs can participate in choreographed routines or may compete for height or distance of catch. Participants do best if they have a high drive, energy and retrieving ability. If you choose to pursue dog sports in the new year, local trainers, clubs and competitions exist and can be found on the Internet. YouTube offers a plethora of information and remarkable dog sport videos. Whichever sport appeals to you, I wish you and your dog many happy hours. â–

A single day of photos worldwide tells Disney staffers’ stories By KATHY DES JARDINS CIOFFI Contributing Writer

T

he mystery of what it takes to make Disney magic unfolds in the pages of “One Day at Disney,” a new book that’s bringing Walt Disney’s wonderful world to coffee tables everywhere. As the name implies, the 224-page bestseller written by journalist and editor Bruce Steele — as well as its companion Disney Plus documentary film and short series — captures a typical day in the lives of nearly 80 Disney employees around the globe. That day was Feb. 21, 2019. After four years of secret planning, camera crews scrambled on the same day in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Paris and Madrid, as well as the Bahamas, Costa Rica and dozens of U.S. locations to chronicle life behind those “Cast Members Only” doors. In addition to the international photography, “One Day at Disney” also shares the stories of those staffers, known as Disney cast members. Steele, the book’s author, has worked at local newspapers and national magazines including the Alexandria Daily Town Talk, in Louisiana; the Asheville Citizen Times, in North Carolina; Out magazine, based in New York City; and The Advocate, where he was the editor in chief, based in Los Angeles. For the past three years, he’s been contributing to Disney Twenty-Three magazine, work he credits with leading to “One Day at Disney.” A week after the book’s debut, after appearances on “Good Morning America” and 15 radio shows in one day, between book signings at Walt Disney World and Disneyland, Steele took time to reflect on all things Disney.

What is “One Day at Disney,” and how did it come about?

The idea came from Disney CEO Bob Iger about four years ago. It took that long to pull the book together, and I got involved about a year ago. The big day was Feb. 21, and all the hundreds of beautiful, amazing photos in the book were taken on that one day. It was an ordinary Thursday — no holidays, no movie premieres, no sports finals — so we could capture Disney cast members, as company staffers are called, just going about their typical duties.

There are almost 80 people profiled in the book. You can’t have interviewed them all on one day. How did that work?

I did a lot of the interviews by telephone, but I was in Walt Disney World the week of photo day, so I got to meet some cast members there and see them on their jobs. That included Dr. Natalie Mylniczenko, a veterinarian at 10 | northsidewoman.com | january2020

Disney’s Animal Kingdom, who was examining a rhino on photo day, and Heather Bartleson, the facilities coordinator at the parks’ Holiday Services Warehouse. She’s in charge of ordering and tracking every bit of holiday décor for Walt Disney World and the Disney Cruise Line. She gave me a tour of the warehouse, and it was like that scene at the end of “Indiana Jones” — crate after crate of nothing but Christmas and other holiday decorations, from trinkets to 60-foot trees. It was pretty cool.

What do you want readers to learn from the book?

I just got back from a book event at Walt Disney World, and I got to visit again with Katie Whetsell, the actress who plays Dory in “Finding Nemo: The Musical” onstage at Animal Kingdom. She told me that she hopes the book makes people realize that every cast member has an interesting story to share, and I thought that about summed it up. Katie’s story is one of the most remarkable and moving profiles in the book, but I won’t spoil it for you.

Was this just about the parks?

No, the book encompasses every division of the Walt Disney Company, so that’s the parks across the world, as well as Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar, ESPN, ABC, Imagineering, publishing, movies and more. We got photos and fun interviews with everyone — from a security guard at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank to Bob Iger himself. We included celebrities like Brie Larson, Robin Roberts and Anthony Anderson from “black•ish,” as well as a candy

maker, park maintenance workers and the Lucasfilm receptionist who doubles as The Hulk and a Transformer when they need him to do motion-capture performances to guide their special effects.

Was there one person who stayed with you the most?

There were so many that I give a different answer every time I’m asked that question. There’s Cyril Soreau, whose full-time job is to carve Disney characters into the rinds of pumpkins and watermelons in Disneyland Paris, a job he invented for himself. There’s Thom Self, a machinist who scuba-dives into the Disneyland Jungle Cruise after midnight every night to check the machinery. There’s a world-class architect named Laura Cabo who’s designing Disney’s new cruise ships and wound up jumping into the North Sea as part of her job. I’m biased, but I think every cast member has a compelling narrative, many of them starting with what fascinated them as children, whether steam locomotives or Disney cartoons or fixing broken pencil sharpeners.

It’s not just a book about working for Disney. It’s a book about focus and dedication and chasing your dreams. I hope people find it both inspiring and entertaining. You know, like a Disney movie. “One Day at Disney” is available at local booksellers and online retailers. ■

HER GUIDE

New year, new you...get cooking! By CHARMAINE JACKSON Contributing Writer

I

t’s a new year. In fact, it’s a new decade. The start of a new year is the time when we reflect on the past year and make resolutions to change our lives for the better. Some of the most common resolutions are to lose weight, exercise more, save more money, learn a new skill and spend more time with friends and family. One resolution idea to consider that will help you achieve some of these other goals is to get cooking. Research published by public health nutrition experts at Harvard and Johns Hopkins universities has shown that cooking at home more often leads to healthier overall lifestyles. People who frequently cook meals at home generally eat healthier and consume fewer calories than those who cook less. When people cook most of their meals at home, they tend to consume fewer carbohydrates, less sugar and less fat than those who cook less or not at all – even if they are not trying to lose weight. Home cooks also tend to cut back on costs as they’re cutting back on calories. Cooking at 12 | northsidewoman.com | january2020

home is less expensive than eating out. It can also be a lot of fun when everyone pitches in and cooks together to make a meal. The act of cooking is a very social activity and can create positive life-long memories. Think about one of your favorite meals growing up. Can’t you remember the exact smells, tastes and people you were with in clear detail, and all the good memories you had? If you want to get cooking more or just learn new cooking skills, consider signing up for a cooking class with your friends and family at one of the local cooking schools. You can learn how to make a wide variety of foods from around the world, including sushi, tapas, Chinese, Thai, Italian, Spanish, Creole and more. You can also learn cooking techniques, such as how to use knives or make pasta, along with baking, braising, sautéing and roasting. For children and teens, there are cooking camps, and couples date night classes offer hands-on instruction to make your own meal as well as demonstrations only where you can learn how to make vegetarian meals, gluten-free, healthy and fresh meals and how to use herbs and spices. HER HEALTH

Natural supplements are increasingly popular ways to take health into your own hands, says Dr. Michael Murray, N.D.

Six top wellness trends to watch for A

ccording to the National Institutes of Health, only about 20 percent of your life expectancy is dictated by your genes; the rest depends on your lifestyle. Increasingly, people look to improve the length and quality of their life through certain products and habits. Here’s a look at six popular roads to wellness: 1. Back to nature. Dr. Chloe Evans of the Shetland, Scotland National Health Service says getting out into nature can help alleviate conditions ranging from high blood pressure to depression. “The benefits [of nature] are that it is free, easily accessible, allows increased connection with surroundings which hopefully leads to improved physical and mental health for individuals,” she says. 2. Personalize nutrition. When it comes to maintaining a healthful weight and well-being, foods that are good or bad for one person may not be for another. Personalized diets can help. 3. Dress for health success. New technologies may let clothes correct your environment. Engineers from MIT created a “smart” jacket that automatically adjusts itself to suit your body temperature, the outside temperature and your movements. 4. CBD is in. No longer illegal under the Controlled Substances Act, cannabidiol (CBD)—which doesn’t induce a psychoactive effect—is increasingly used to target specific ailments. 5. Aromatherapy makes scents. At the Cleveland Clinic’s

Innovations Lab, researchers came up with plant-based aromatherapeutic solutions to treat specific symptoms, such as pain, nausea and anxiety. Recent studies of people with knee replacements suggest the right scent can reduce pain and relieve anxiety. 6. Be smart about supplements. “High-quality supplements and vitamins, herbs and homeopathy, and sports nutrition products can be trusted partners in your natural wellness lifestyle,” explains Michael Murray, N.D. Dr. Murray is considered one of the world’s leading authorities on natural medicine. He has published more than 30 books including “The Textbook of Natural Medicine,” used by hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals the world over. Wellness solutions for just about all the key aspects of your life are available through iHerb, a leading wellness destination serving 150 countries for over two decades. Based in the U.S., iHerb’s quality control includes product testing by a third-party lab for ingredients, purity and labeling; climate-controlled warehouses and distribution centers; and assurance of freshness and transparency with close expiration date monitoring. Airbrush makeup creates flawles By LORI WYNNE Contributing Writer

O

n the fashion runways showcasing the trends for 2020, the makeup artists had a heyday emphasizing the eyes with oversized winged eyeliner, chunky glitter eyeshadow and rhinestone freckles. While the color and technique varied from designer to designer, one thing was constant — flawless skin. Even if one might shrink at the thought of glaring eye adornment, we can all get behind the desire to create fresh naturallooking skin. To create a flawless canvas for some of the more daring makeup trends, Scott Law, the co-owner of Voila Salon in Roswell, recommends airbrush makeup. Law and his business partner Manuela Davis have been serving their clients for 27 years. “Our clients have become our friends,” said 14 | northsidewoman.com | january2020

Law. “We are now serving our third generation of clients. Our clients are our walking billboards. When people ask them who does their hair, color and special occasion makeup, we want to make sure they look their best.” Airbrush makeup is light and beautiful, Law said. “It looks so natural, and covers blemishes and rosacea,” he said. “It’s long-lasting, even through a workout.” While there are a variety of companies selling airbrush makeup products, Law uses the Temptu.com brand airbrush makeup sprayer. Temptu has been providing airbrush tools for makeup professionals for 35 years. An easy-touse consumer product is now available. The airbrush tool can also be used to apply contour, blush, highlighter and eyeshadow. Law said the Temptu airbrush sprayer can easily create a smoky eye or evening look. According to the website, the Temptu sprayer

can also be used to create a flawless eyebrow with the use of a template. The sprayer is a small cordless, USB rechargeable handheld device, priced around $200. The kit includes the sprayer, liquid foundation, blush and highlighter. Twenty-four foundation makeup shades are available in easy-to-install cartridges. A myriad of shades are available for blush, eye shadow, contour and highlight. Each vial lasts about three months. The website has a short questionnaire to aid in finding the correct shades, and a shade match guarantee.

How to use it:

Test the sprayer on the back of your hand. Familiarize yourself with how fast the liquid foundation is released from the sprayer. With the sprayer about a hand’s width (four fingers) away from the side your face, spray in small circular motions.

Pro tips for laundry room perfection

By TRACY HARKNESS Contributing Writer

W

hen it comes to designing beautiful spaces in homes, it is easy to dismiss or ignore the laundry room altogether. Doing laundry is not an enjoyable activity, but it is unavoidable as we spend hours each week washing, drying and folding. I am a firm believer that you should love the space you live in. By creating a functional, beautiful space, the chore of laundry can seem a little less daunting and mundane. If you’re considering a laundry room renovation, these design basics can put you on the path to laundry room perfection. Flooring is important in a laundry room. A ceramic tile floor is the most maintenance-free. You don’t have to worry about linens dripping and ruining the floor. Plus, installing a fun, playful tile can add character to a once-boring room. If you have room, put in a sink. This will change your life. A sink makes it easier to soak muddy baseball pants or scrub other stains without having to dirty your kitchen sink. I prefer a front load for both the washer and dryer. It is so much easier to keep up with sorting and folding clothes if you have counter space in the laundry room, and front-loading appliances allow a nice area to fold. Adding a countertop over the appliances also gives you a built-in look. Another feature that ups the laundry room’s functionality is a rod to hang clothes. Whether you need a place for those delicate hang-dry only clothes or just need to hang items as they come out of the dryer, a hanging rod is the solution. Lighting is very important in this workhorse of a space. Even if you are lucky enough to have natural lighting in your laundry room, you will still need overhead lighting. A beautiful light can be a focal point and also serve a valuable purpose. While the laundry is a particularly functional room, don’t forget the little things that can add beauty to your space. Pretty baskets will help hide the clutter and keep your cleaning essentials tucked away. Even pretty canisters to keep detergents organized add interest. Although adding greenery and art is not a must, it will certainly make your laundry room feel special! ■ 16 | northsidewoman.com | january2020

What developers have recently realized is the 55+ market needs an overhaul as it is often perceived as “assisted living” which could not be further from the truth. The new 55+ renter is

still working, has discretionary income and has reached a point in life where they no longer want the mortgage or maintenance, rather they want to travel, volunteer or pursue their passions which often time might have been put on the back burner to raise their family. Evoq Town Flats in Johns Creek was conceived as a luxury rental option unlike anything currently on the market. The goal was to provide condominium-quality rentals with a boutique feel and resort-level amenities, including a self-serve Tap Room with beer & wine selections, heated saltwater pool, concierge services, 2 Guest Suites for friends

and family, even Peloton bikes and OnDemand Fitness. In addition, knowing the level of luxury our residents are coming from, we put just as much detail into the flats, offering 23 unique floor plans which include spacious 5-piece master bath suites, stainless appliances including 5-burner gas ranges, 11’ ceilings, even a wine-refrigerator in certain floor plans. If you are ready to “evoke” what’s next for you, give us a call at 770-869-2785 or visit www.evoqliving.com and schedule a time to come see all that EVOQ Town Flats can offer you. ■

orth Atlanta is a hub for trendy-yet-refined interior decor. With plenty of brick and mortar stores to choose from, the difficult part is picking which styles best reflect your personality and taste. Below, experts offer their views on designing for the lifestyles of today.

Defining an open space…

W

hen searching for a home or renovating their own space, clients are looking more and more for a home with an open concept. A space that has a nice flow, one that is great for entertaining and also reveals an updated look. Homes with kitchens, dining areas, and living rooms that are open into one another create an environment where family and guests are very comfortable. Open spaces can become a challenge to decorate and place furnishing without a vision and a plan. How will the spaces be used? What will separate the living areas? These are often asked questions and here are a few suggestions. When it comes to decorating open spaces, it is essential that you provide some kind of a visual definition to the different spaces. Rugs are always a good way to easily define different parts of the same area. There are many colors, styles, patterns and textures to choose from which will enhance your room and its furnishings. Selecting different flooring materials also separates one space from another. Tiles are always good choices for foyers and kitchens, they can be laid in a variety of ways forming designs from the simple to the elaborate. Hardwood floors also define spaces by framing an area with inlaid boarder and center. Simply changing the direction of the way floor boards are laid from one area to another creates the illusion of a separate space. Another way to accomplish a space

definition is varying ceiling heights. Two story great rooms with beamed or coffered ceilings often transitions a large room into several separate living spaces. Tray ceilings in a dining area or bedroom create divisions in the space. Lighting is also very important to set off different areas in the same room. A row of pendants on a kitchen island or a beautiful chandelier hung over the eating area which opens to another living space immediately creates a visual division. Strategically placing your furniture can also separate and provide barriers in an open space. Table lamps and floor lamps placed appropriately create a deliberate separation in an area. Open shelving units work well as room dividers, objects placed on the shelve can be

viewed from either side without completely obstructing the view. Floating a sofa can provide a passage way between spaces, placing a console table behind it provide visual interest as well as a place to add lighting. The same effect can be achieved by floating a pair of chairs with a table between them. Painting your walls with different colors can give you the illusion of separation between rooms, be cautious many mistakes are made by choosing strong contrasting colors, choose instead subtle complementing shades of the same color. Texturing a wall with wall paper or stacked stone it is another possibility. Open spaces can be made cozy and comfortable, great places for family and friends to gather when careful effort is put into the planning. ■

HER MONEY

Increase your savings by 1 percent Pay off one debT Cleanse your credit card:

New Year’s resolutions for your financial well-being By ALLISON BAINES Contributing Writer

A

ccording to Inc.com, dieting was the No. 1 new year’s resolution going into 2019. Believe it or not, after dieting and eating healthier, saving money came in at No. 4 on the list. Here are a few tips to start off the new decade, so you can save more money in 2020. 1. Increase your savings by 1 percent: It’s important to increase your overall savings by a few percentage points every year, so you don’t fall victim to lifestyle inflation. Pay yourself first, and even if you can’t afford to increase your savings by a large amount, still try to increase your savings by 1 percent. This works best by setting up an automatic savings plan from your checking account, so you don’t see the money at all. 2. Shop your bills: January is the perfect time to shop your bills. Take a look at your cable bill, phone bill or any other bills you have in your house. Has the amount increased since the last time you looked at it? Shop the services with other companies, or call the customer retention line to try to lower your bills overall. 3. Cleanse your credit card: This is one of the easier items on this list. Take some time to review your credit card statements, and 22 | northsidewoman.com | january2020

cancel one recurring charge for any services you didn’t use in 2019. 4. Decrease food and entertainment expenses: This is a big expense for many households in the Atlanta area. Try going to the grocery store once a week, instead of multiple times a week. This is a very easy way to lower your grocery store spending, so you aren’t buying snacks you don’t need. Because let’s be honest, snacks at the store look great — even if you aren’t hungry! 5. Pay off one debt: Make it a goal this year to pay off one of your debts. If you have a debt with high interest rate, look into a zero interest credit card balance transfer. There are credit cards that will offer you a no-interest rate period, but remember, you must pay off the entire card balance before the promotional period ends. Otherwise, you will be charged interest on the entire amount that you put on the card when you made the balance transfer. As always, at oXYGen Financial, we help you breathe easier about life and cleanse your budget for the new year. ■ Allison Baines, wealth plan design specialist at oXYGen Financial. SHE's FIT

TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT THIS YEAR, Weightlifting By KAREN ESCOBAR Contributing Writer

M

any people tend to associate weightlifting and its equipment with Arnold Schwarzenegger-style body builders. They either feel like they could never achieve that muscle-bound look — or they just don’t want to look like that — so they stay away from the weights at the gym. Big mistake! Below are common misconceptions about weightlifting, and reasons why you might want to consider hitting the weights next time you’re in the gym.

Weightlifting is only for men

Not true! In fact, lifting weights is not only a perfectly acceptable activity for women, it is a very important one. It can help prevent loss of bone mass, which plays a role in reducing the risk of osteoporosis. It’s also super empowering for women to feel stronger.

Weightlifting doesn’t help you lose weight Wrong. When you combine weightlifting

with a healthy diet and cardio workouts, you’re on an express trip to weight loss. As you lift weights, you burn calories. The best part is you continue to do so, even after you’ve put the dumbbells down. When you lift weights, you improve your fat-to-muscle ratio. Remember, muscle is denser than fat; so if you don’t see the numbers you want on the scales, look for them in your clothes size or waist measurement instead.

Weightlifting makes you bulky

their output with a decent amount of musclerestoring shuteye. The good news is that lifting weights will help you sleep better. And once you’re well-rested, you’ll have more energy to hit the ground running (literally) in the mornings.

Weightlifting leads to injury

Wrong again. With the assistance of a good coach or trainer, weightlifting can actually prevent injury. As you can see, there’s no excuse not to include weightlifting as part of your workouts. Add weightlifting to your exercise routine in 2019 and you will lose weight, feel healthier and have a stronger, more toned physique. See you all in the gym.■

It’s true that lifting weights is the best strategy for gaining muscle mass. To encourage this, your trainer will have you lifting for shorter periods of time, at higher levels. This type of training will sculpt your body. If your goal is to stay toned, it’s all about lighter weights and more repetition. Stick with it, and you’ll trim down while creating a more toned form. ohns Creek’s Hope KempHanson, who is in her junior year of fashion design at Savannah College of Art and Design, was named one of two winners in the Adidas x Woolmark Performance Challenge Nov. 14, 2019, in Munich. The international competition organized by Adidas and The Woolmark Company is aimed at early-career creative thinkers in the sports and performance categories. As co-winner, Kemp-Hanson has been awarded a six-month paid internship with Adidas in Germany. The annual competition brought together 1,060 students from 115 tertiary universities in 21 countries. In 2019, their assignment was to develop a product from a combination of hightech and merino wool for the activewear market, in which wool as a fiber currently has a relatively small market share. chosen, was named co-winner and awarded a six-month paid internship with Adidas in Germany. In September, the finalists attended workshops and conferences in Shanghai. In November, they presented their innovative concepts — which ranged from energy-generating merino wool base layers to seamless knitting technology through body-mapping — to an esteemed industry panel in Munich. Kemp-Hanson said her apparel design entry aimed “to blend urban streetwear with skateboarding equipment by creating a line of hidden impact protection that portrays a satirical look at the story of South Korean skateboarders.” Sports fashion wasn’t always Kemp-Hanson’s passion, though. In fact, her initial interest was haute couture,

for which she had her first fashion internship at 14. Then as a senior at Johns Creek’s Chattahoochee High School, she debuted a formal dress line. Her focus took a sportier turn when she signed to play soccer at SCAD. She shifted to designing sportswear using smart textiles with a concentration on sustainability. That shift resulted in her being chosen for the 12-week Pensole Fall 2018 Design Intensive in Portland, Oregon, a highly competitive program founded by D’Wayne Edwards, the former Jordan Design Director at Nike. Last winter, Kemp-Hanson was also named to a design cooperative sponsored by Pensole at Boston’s New Balance headquarters, where she placed first in apparel design. How to be a relationship visionary By ELAINE WILCO Contributing Writer

G

reat relationships don’t just happen; they are developed. One way to kick off your new year’s relationship resolutions is to create a relationship vision together. This is an exercise for two, developed by John Gottman, a psychological researcher and clinician who studied couples for decades and has written some wonderfully helpful books on making relationships work. Start off separately. Each of you write down all factors that would make a love relationship deeply satisfying. Some of the items you list will be features of your relationship as it is currently, and some will be things you wish you had. Either way, write each item in the present tense, as if it already is happening. This is a vision, so you are imagining that you are able to peek into the future and see your future selves enjoying the great relationship you have created. Also, be sure to state your vision in positive terms. For instance, say, “We settle our disagreements pleasantly,” rather than, “We don’t fight.”

You may have some items that are concrete and even relatively trivial (like, “We enjoy listening to music together.”). Some may be more abstract and essential (like, “We treat each other with respect.”). In total, each person should list 10 — 20 items. Next, sit down together and compare lists. Which items are on both lists? Is there anything on your partner’s list that you wouldn’t want as part of your relationship? Which items are most important to each of you? Finally, which items would be most challenging for the two of you to achieve? When you have completed this exercise, you will have created a roadmap for your relationship. The “challenge” items will be your to-do list, and your new year will be off to a great start! ■

HER CAREER

Powerful body language for female presenters By KATE TUNISON Contributing Writer

W

omen are often trained to think that small is beautiful. Whether it’s buying jeans a couple sizes too small (remember the muffin-top?), teetering on too-tiny shoes or downplaying our own accomplishments, we’re often more comfortable when we hide or make ourselves small. We need to think differently. Big is beautiful, especially when you’re presenting in front of an audience. How do you make yourself big? When we ask this question, we’re not talking about physical size. Being big is a matter of presence, not poundage. How do you improve your executive presence? Here are some ways to get started: Standing while presenting is preferable, so be mindful and stand up straight. Hunching and slouching makes you look weak, sloppy and indifferent. Widen your base by keeping your feet about hip-width apart and save your extra-high heels for another occasion. By widening your base, it helps to ground and balance you, creating more presence and credibility. Placing your feet close together may feel safe, but it makes you look small and not confident. If circumstances dictate that you present while sitting, then sit up straight — it will help you breathe better, too. Sit in your chair with about a third of the seat space between you and the back of the chair, feet flat on the ground. If you’re sitting, twisting your ankles and legs into a pretzel makes you look tight, and your body will hold onto the tension. Once again, you are sending a message to your audience that you are hiding. Get loud. Project your voice so that the audience members at the back of the room can hear you without straining. If they must strain

to hear you, they will quickly turn their attention to other things, like scrolling through their iPhone or chatting with their neighbor. In other words, they will turn you off. I once taught a class with a female whose voice was so soft that I could barely hear her a few feet away. She came across as timid and boring, and the audience quickly lost interest. To project louder, breathe deeply from your diaphragm, not your chest. Wearing clothes that are tight around your waist constricts your ability to use your diaphragm muscle in breathing and projecting. Always dress for professionalism and comfort. Take advantage of the space around you. Use your hands, arms and elbows to help illustrate your points. You don’t have to gesture dramatically as if you are guiding airplanes on the runway, but experiment using your full range of motion, and then adapt them for the size of your audience and venue. If you dance, practice yoga or do anything active, try some of these moves when practicing, and experiment with how extending your arms can change the way you look and feel. Record yourself and watch it back — you will see a world of difference in how you come across to your audience. The point to remember here is that creating a powerful presence has little to do with the size or shape of your body and has a lot to do with how you use your body and your voice. When you’re in front of a group, big is beautiful. And memorable. ■ As owner and president of PresentingPlus! Pregnancy Diet By KORTNEY ROGERS, CNM

A “

healthy diet is a vital part of your pregnancy journey. It is important to make sure baby receives adequate vitamins and minerals through your diet, even while taking a prenatal vitamin. Some key nutrients you need are calcium, iron, Vitamins A, C, B6, and B12, and Folate. To make sure baby and mom are getting proper nutrients, an easy rule of thumb is to have a plate full of colorful foods. For example, for breakfast have two hard-boiled eggs with a half-cup of blueberries. For lunch, have a colorful spinach salad filled with a variety of vegetables. A good dinner suggestion is a protein with colorful vegetables and long-grain rice. Shopping the outside perimeter of the grocery store is a good strategy to get the most nutritious ingredients needed to maintain a healthy diet in pregnancy. Sticking to water and avoiding sugary beverages and caffeine is also very important. Everyone needs a different amount of water according to their activity level and what they’re used to drinking. On average, you need about 60-100 ounces of water per day while pregnant. Eat foods high in protein that are long-acting, such as cheese, yogurt, peanut butter, and nuts to help with nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Eating foods with potassium in it, such as bananas and drinking coconut water, can help relieve the discomfort of leg cramps. You can also try consuming calcium-rich foods such as leafy greens, nuts, grains, and low-fat milk to help with leg cramps and muscle spasms. A cup of almonds throughout the day is an excellent way to incorporate more protein into your diet, which not only helps with day-to-day pregnancy symptoms, but it also helps with recovery after delivery. For more suggestions on specific nutrients and amounts that you need and that can help with pregnancy symptoms, please ask your Modern ObGyn provider."

Winter skin: Why even Santa flies south in the Winter

W

inter in Georgia is a time when dropping outdoor temperatures cause us to turn up the heat and inadvertently turn down the humidity. According to the EPA, humidity should be kept between DR. TAYLOR 30% and 50% for general health and comfort. Unfortunately, for people with eczema, lower humidity levels may be insufficient to keep skin from becoming dry, itchy and cracked. Dermatologists often suggest that patients with eczema set an indoor humidity target of at least 45-55%. Humidity can be simply measured with inexpensive gauges picked up at a hardware store or online, and humidifiers and vaporizers are great additions as long as they are frequently cleaned and mold is not allowed to grow within units. More advanced central heating and air systems even have settings that can help help reach humidity and temperature targets, sometimes decreasing the need to purchase additional machines. The most basic intervention for most patients’ dry skin is simply not to wash the areas that are dry and cracked with soap and 30 | northsidewoman.com | january2020

water. Soap strips good oils from our skin, and hot water has the same effect. Our faces, chests and backs make a lot of oil and rarely develop eczema whereas the rest of the body makes less oil and is consequently susceptible to oil loss during bathing or washing. Unless you’ve been gardening and are muddy, you don’t need to scrub your legs and hands with soap in the shower. Just let the soapy water from your shampoo run down your body, wash your groin and armpits and rinse off in warm but not hot water. Then, pat dry. Don’t scrub dry. Immediately moisturize. Moisturize at least once more during the day and before bed. When washing dishes, use gloves. After using the restroom, consider moisturizing antibacterial hand sanitizers instead of hot water and soap unless C diff or similar concerns necessitate soap and water. Other creative interventions include getting a little bit of sunlight and decreasing allergen presence in your home and on the bed. Sunlight in excess causes skin cancer, but in moderation sunlight decreases inflammation in eczema-prone skin. Allergens like dust and dander can cause eczema flares for some people. An allergist can test for allergens and sensitivity to dust and dust

mites, and for such people hypoallergenic bedding covers, frequent laundering and vacuuming can help decrease eczema. For many patients, topical steroids, calcineurin inhibitors, antistaphylococcal regimens and other doctor-prescribed interventions may be necessary, and your friendly neighborhood dermatologist is happy to assist. In extreme cases, an extremely exciting new intervention (dupilumab) is advisable for the truly miserable eczema sufferer. The average annual humidity at the North Pole is 65%, so as long as Santa doesn’t turn the heat on, the air at least starts out moist. Unfortunately, if one of those elves gets tired of working in the cold, heating the workshop will quickly cause the humidity inside to drop, so you can bet Santa has a humidifier or two hard at work during the coldest months, which incidentally (at the North Pole) is all of them except June and July. If you or a loved one has skin cancer, a vein complaint, or other skin issue, consider Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta. Dr. Brent Taylor is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon and vein specialist. ■

Ever wondered about Marionette Lines?

M

arionette Lines are those deep lines around the corners of your mouth and chin that seem to become more pronounced the older we get. It may not happen to everyone but as we age, the ligaments near the chin and mouth can loosen and fat deposits in the face begin to diminish. Over time, people with marionette lines will start to see their skin sag, deeper lines and sometimes an angry appearance. There are some steps you can take to reduce the appearance of marionette lines, such as a regular schedule of preventative, antiaging skincare combined with a healthy lifestyle. However, marionette lines are largely a product of genetic predisposition. If you have deep marionette lines, there are some treatments to help. 1. Facelift is an option but comes with unnecessary risk and high cost. 2. Topical Creams are also available but it’s important to note they won’t eliminate marionette lines, but it can substantially reduce their unpleasant appearance. Among the more popular topical creams that can be used are retinol and collagen. Another effective topical cream is alpha-hydroxy acid, which helps bring increased moisture to the surface of the skin to enhance facial plumpness. 3. Chemical Peels and Dermabrasion are effective treatments to mitigate the appearance of marionette lines. Both procedures effectively remove dead skin, and neither carries substantial risk or side effects (other than mild skin peeling and irritation). 4. Injectables are typically the best option to reduce marionette lines. Smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines using neurotoxin

injectable fillers is one of the safest and most common skin rejuvenation treatments in the United States. At Youthtopia Med Spa, we offer BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® injectable treatments to create smoother, more youthful skin. 5. The “Vampire Facial” is another great solution to reduce the appearance of Marionette Lines. The facial combines PRP Injections (platelet-rich plasma) & Microneedling and is the Hands Down Gold standard for anti-aging treatments. PRP is found in the serum portion of your blood and when applied to your skin, it stimulates cell turnover enhancing the tone of your skin and giving you a fresher appearance. When getting your wisdom teeth out, you can ease pain without opioids “

W

ill it hurt?” is often one of the first questions people ask when told they need a medical procedure. One problem: the mere thought of pain can intensify its feeling. It’s enough to make some people put off medical care—including minor dental surgery. Doctors and dentists understand. They’re healers by nature and don’t want to inflict pain on their patients if they can help it. Fortunately, dental pain management has come a long way in the past century. Novocain was formulated in 1905. And when highly effective painkillers such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, and acetaminophen with codeine became available, dental surgeons began prescribing them for pain relief from wisdom tooth extraction and similar procedures. “Today, we know the danger that comes with opioids—and that absolutely anyone can become addicted,” says Gregory Theis, DDS. Dr. Theis is director of dental services for Delta Dental of Wisconsin, the state’s largest dental plan. “Tragically, that includes teens and young adults who were first introduced to opioid painkillers with a legitimate prescription, often following wisdom tooth extraction,” he adds. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 45% of initial opioid exposure is linked to a dental procedure such as wisdom tooth removal or other oral surgery. For some, that exposure can lead to a lifetime of dependency and drug misuse. A large study by Stanford University School of Medicine found that 6.8% of young people who got an initial opioid prescription from their dentists sought additional prescriptions for opioids after filling their first one. Just 12 months later, 5.8% of those individuals were diagnosed with opioid abuse. Among a comparable control group, only 0.4% of young people who didn’t receive an opioid prescription were diagnosed with opioid abuse during the same period. With a greater understanding of opioid dangers, dentists and their professional organizations such as the American Dental Association (ADA) are acting to combat abuse and limit unnecessary prescriptions. Their campaigns are working. From 2012 to 2017, U.S. dentists have reduced their opioid prescriptions by nearly half a million. “Educating dentists, our customers, and our members on the dangers of opioid abuse is a top priority right now,” says Dr. Theis. “We’re teaching people that over-the-counter painkillers like naproxen and ibuprofen can be very effective for dental pain management.” What if you’re terrified of experiencing any pain—and your dentist says you need your wisdom teeth removed? According to Dr. Theis, that’s one procedure you may be able to delay—or avoid entirely. Dentists once routinely extracted wisdom teeth: the third molars that usually emerge between ages 17 and 24. But that practice is changing. “Unless the wisdom teeth cause problems with the jaw or other teeth, or they become infected and are painful, patients may be able to delay the procedure a few years, until the teeth break through the gums,” explains Dr. Theis. When the molars emerge from the gums, removal is often far less complicated and less painful. That means general anesthesia and strong painkillers can often be avoided. And sometimes, he adds, you can just let those wisdom teeth erupt and function like other teeth. Or you may be one of the lucky 22% of the population who never develop wisdom teeth at all. If you ever do need dental surgery, be your own wellness advocate— ask for pain relief alternatives to opioids. If you must take them, use precautions: • Take only the prescribed dose or less • Beware of side effects with other medications

Gregory Theis, DDS says getting wisdom teeth out may not be nearly as painful as many fear.

• Stop taking painkillers as soon as possible • Safely dispose of leftover medications. ■

any of our patients desire the opportunity to achieve a more beautiful, youthful smile and are excited to learn of the benefits of a smile makeover. Since a smile makeover involves the combination of multiple dental cosmetic treatments to address a variety of concerns, the ultimate costs associated with the procedure vary for each patient DR. REMALEY depending on the extent of treatment needed. Some of the factors that can impact the total cost of cosmetic smile makeover include: • Which combination of procedures you choose for your treatment plan • The location of the affected teeth • Any laboratory costs that are necessary During the initial smile consultation process Dr, Remaley and Dr. Hood will review your smile makeover options in detail, allowing you to make an educated decision about your teeth and gums. At that time, they will begin to create your customized treatment plan. A member of our team will then come up with an overall cost estimate and talk with you about your payment options. Our doctors are extensively trained in cosmetic dentistry and have helped many patients completely renew their smiles!
