Quiet Hours

All persons who are present in the residence halls will observe quiet hours between the hours of 9 p.m. and 8 a.m., Sunday - Thursday, and midnight to noon, Friday and Saturday. At all times, residents need to be considerate of others' needs and respect the rights of others by being aware of the noise level on the hall.

Quiet Hours Continued

At no time should there be an excessive amount of noise that will disrupt others. As an informal rule, noise that can be heard beyond two doors down from your room is likely excessive and potentially bothering other residents in the building. Residence Halls and floors may expand these hours (i.e., longer quiet hour periods)

Please be respectful of other guests and programs sharing the residence halls.

Beds & Furniture

Beds may be lowered, but will not be raised. Beds should never be adjusted by guests.

Requests may be submitted during your check-in, or through a maintenance request Furniture must remain in assigned rooms

Air Conditioning

All halls are equipped with air conditioning

Please ensure the air conditioning remains on during the duration of your stay

Elevator Safety

Elevators are tools for the safe conveyance of guests

Security cameras are installed in all elevators. Elevators are commonly damaged by jumping or over-filling

Damaging an elevator puts guests and staff at risk and may result in significant repair charges.

Maintenance & Housekeeping

Maintenance

Our Facilities Teams work 7a.m. - 4p.m. MondayFriday, and are on call for emergencies. Thresholds for emergency maintenance and housekeeping are at the discretion of the Conference Director.

While we may not be able to repair facilities issues after hours and on weekends, we make our best efforts to accommodate your stay. If you encounter a facility issue, notify a staff member immediately so that we can assist you.

Common non-emergency issues: Toilet not flushing, dripping faucet, air conditioner will not go below 70 degrees

Common emergency issues: biohazards (vomit, urine, blood) in common spaces, significant water leakage, elevator entrapment

Safety & Emergency Preparedness

In any emergency, you should ALWAYS call or text 911.

Prepare Ahead

Learn campus emergency conditions and terminology. Unlike public K‑12 institutions, Appalachian State University does not typically lock down the entire campus during emergencies.

Understand the App State Siren Warning System. If you are near campus, you may hear sirens tested once a month. The tones used for testing differ from those used during actual emergencies. Learn more about the siren system.

Plan your response in advance. Think ahead about how you would react if an emergency occurs while you are on campus.

Know your surroundings. Take note of:

Building exits

Fire extinguishers

Emergency equipment

Areas that may provide shelter or protection

Staying Informed

Monitor official university communications.

University Communications will distribute emergency information as soon as possible and provide regular updates.

Visit App State Alert. This is the University’s official emergency messaging website, updated through the Office of Public Affairs and the Emergency Operations Center.

Rave Guardian App: This app is available for the Boone and Hickory campuses and includes features such a two-way texting service to report suspicious activity and a safety timer, which will notify people you trust to check in on you.

Notifying Appalachian Police about suspicious behavior or possible criminal activity can prevent incidents from escalating.

If evacuation is not possible:

Seek safe shelter

Stand by for specific instructions from the University

Follow official directions.

The University may establish media centers or volunteer reception areas during major events.

Appalachian Safety App

In any emergency, always call 911 first. However, the Appalachian Safety App provides an additional layer of personal safety and connection.

The app allows users to:

Contact Appalachian Police and local emergency services

Check in with family and friends

Access campus safety and wellness resources quickly

Download the FREE Appalachian Safety App for Apple or Android devices.

Tips for Using the Appalachian Safety App

Guardian Feature:

Appalachian Police should only be selected as a Guardian when the user is physically on campus.

APD cannot respond to off‑campus situations.

Privacy Protection:

APD can only view a user’s profile when the safety timer alerts them or when the user requests emergency assistance.

Enable push notifications to receive important campus safety alerts directly through the app.

Thank you for taking an active interest in campus safety and preparedness. We encourage you to explore campus emergency resources further and reach out with any questions, comments, or ideas at any time. Your awareness and preparation help keep our community safe.
