The story of Appalachian Log Structures begins more than 30 years ago, when our founder, Fletcher R. Parsons, put his 40-some years of experience in heavy-timber manufacturing and wood preservation into a log home company. Today, that company is still providing what he envisioned – durable, high quality log structures for residential and commercial use. But that’s just the beginning.

Appalachian Log Structures has furnished log home materials for customers all across the country and abroad, as well. We’ve invested years of hard work and research to achieve high quality manufacturing techniques. We’ve established ourselves as a leader in the log home industry, and we insist upon having a one-on-one relationship with each of our customers.
The Excitement is Building. Planning your Log Home We’re not one of those log home manufacturers who will sell you a kit and wish you the best of luck. We form a partnership with you and work with you – from the way you see your home, to the way it lays out in the blueprint, to the way it will be erected at your site. And while we don’t assemble the log home on your lot, we can help you locate a builder, and we provide a technical assistance visit during assembly.
The most important step in building a log home is planning. It is also the most time-consuming – but it is the first step to making your best move yet!
Work the Plan. Pre-Qualify Contact a lending institution to check on current interest rates, mortgage loan options, and secure pre-approval for a loan. This will help you develop a realistic budget for your home. We can provide you with a list of “log friendly“ lenders.
Choose a Floor Plan Work with one of our sales consultants to create the floor plan you want – choose one of our predesigned plans, or develop a custom plan. We will work with you to create the floor plan that meets your budget and your expectations. We will develop a quotation for the log package materials needed, and work with you to choose a log thickness (8” or 6”), log profile, and corner style. A note about square footage: The total square footage description for each model is calculated based on total floor area for the first and second floors. This is not the same as total living area, which can be calculated several different ways.
Order Blueprints Finalize your floor plan and place an order with an Appalachian Log Structures sales consultant for preliminary blueprints. A preliminary set includes four (4) elevations, a floor plan design and a foundation plan. Preliminary blueprints are not for construction use. A full set of blueprints is available after a deposit is placed on the package.
Develop Construction Costs ALSI does not provide contracting or building services, so you will need to select a general contractor for your project. Contact your local Home Builders Association, other log home-owners, or your local building supply store to develop a list of potential contractors. We can help you find a contractor as well. Talk with several builders and have them review your blueprints. Be sure you discuss: · · · ·
Building permits Site preparation Erection of the log package Mechanicals (electrical work, plumbing, heating/ cooling) · Interior finishes (including kitchen, bath, lighting fixtures, floor coverings, fireplaces and trim packages) · Landscaping If you will be your own general contractor, these same steps should be taken to develop costs and a workable timetable.
Choose a Builder & Develop a Timeline When it comes to something as important as your home, don’t select a builder based solely on price. Be sure all aspects of the building process have been covered, and that you feel comfortable with the communication level you have with the builder. Carefully check references. You’ll be working together to build something special, so make sure you have (or can establish) a good working relationship. Every log home is built on a different timeline, based on its size, design, job site and more. Be sure that you have a realistic timeline for your construction.
A Word about Building Codes Appalachian Log Structures’ log and beam components are structurally designed to meet or exceed most of the minimum building code requirements. Your contractor, local building official, and local home inspector should review and inform you of any unique conditions or alterations that are required to meet structural code requirements or construction methods adopted by your community.

Doors The standard ALSI entry door is our classic country cross buck, but there are many different styles from which to choose. Patio doors are offered in sliding, swinging, or French style. You can also upgrade your door with special crystal, bevel or leaded glass options or sidelights.
Interior Finish Appalachian Log Structures offers several styles of interior log paneling that can be purchased as an option to continue the full log look on interior dormer walls, gables, and on framed interior partitions. (And remember that kitchen cabinets, appliances, floor covering, light fixtures, plumbing, electrical and masonry work are not included with our homes – you will need to work with your contractor to select and purchase these items.)
Garages Many of our standard plans show an attached garage. If your floor plan does not, we will be glad to work with you to design a garage (attached or detached) to meet your needs.
Fireplaces We do not supply materials for fireplaces, however, because of their popularity in log homes, many of our standard floor plans show suggested locations. You will need to work with your contractor to determine location, type and materials if you choose to have a fireplace.
Dormers & Gables Dormers and gables are designed to provide additional functional living space, areas for windows and ventilation on the second level of a floor plan design with a steep roof pitch. Choose from three designs: · Gable · Doghouse · Shed A gable is a triangular wall beneath the peak of the roof, commonly shown with stationery glass to enhance lighting.

This difference saves you – and your contractor – time, effort and money. We not only extensively precut the components of your log wall system, but also precut window and door jambs, loft joists and rafters. Your sales representative can provide you with a complete list of precut items.

We pride ourselves on our precise milling, our log grading, Borate pressure treating and the convenience that’s built into our precut, lettered and numbered log building packages. Every home is cut to order and every package is checked thoroughly before shipping and backed by our 5/25 Year Warranty. Once the specifications for your home are determined, and the design has been generated to blueprints, the logs are smoothed and shaped into the log profile you have chosen. The shaped logs are then cut to designated lengths and joints and corners are cut to interlock. Logs can also be purchased in random lengths. Our Ripley location features three structures – our Corporate Office, Visitors’ Center, and our Model Home. The distinctive grouping serves as a local landmark, and is open to visitors on a walk-in or appointment basis. Our staff and sales representatives will be happy to sit down with you to help you plan your dream home.
We also have a Regional Sales Office in Gaffney, South Carolina. This office was established to answer the need for log housing for our southern neighbors.
