Dissertation: “Research on homelessness in Athens, housing issues and the right to the public space”
It is about a multi annual Research Programm about mapping Rhenea island. Rhe nea is an island next to Delos. There is located the necropolis of the sacred island of Delos a UNESCO world heritage site. The research Program includes every year work on the field for a month during July, and then continuing working for several months with the data collected on the field. I am responsible there to imprint and restore var ious (mostly Hellenistic) monuments. Also i am investigating the traditional cycladic agricultural buildings restoring them in a way to deal with the accommodation issues of the region.

The Summer Workshop “Historic towns in the post-Covid era. Post-Covid ideas for the walled town of Chania” investigated the old Venetian town of Chania as place that could host and accommodate students, in contrast to its current excessive touristic development. We proposed a student house complex and emphasize at the in terac tion between private and public space.

In collaboration with Stavros Lagkadinos and Konstantinos Sigalas we designed the new car bodyshel for the vehicle of team TUCer. Our design won the 1st prize in the competition organized by the Studio of Parametric Design, the Digital Fabrication Lab and the School of Production Engineering & Management. Till then we founded the design department of TUCer team and worked for a year optimizing the design till its manufacturing. We organized exhibitions, graphic design and illustrations of the team. The car is participating in the European Contest of Shell Eco Marathon.

This landscape design includes three “embankments” that transcribe the his toric Venetian fortifications both in shape and scale hosting multiple activities. At the same time creating a link between the city and the seafront and distribute to the general spatial organization. This connection is also achieved through the design of a green park between the Ve netian Walls and the Embankments. This park highlights the Walls and creates a smooth transition from the city to the harbor. Preserving the historical char acter of the old harbor, a square is de signed taking as reference the traces of the demolished Venetian Arsenals. The seafront is organized and subdivided hosting various activities between fish ing, sailing, water sports and ferry boats.

In collaboration with The Archaeolog ical Society at Athens, during the re search program in Vathy Astypalaia, September 2021, Prehistoric walls of stone defining the masterplan of the Acropolis of Vathy were imprint ed and 3d models were created.

STRATEGY

Arsenals typology includes longitudinal walls, interrupted internally by arches, to serve transverse communication. The distance between them is about 10m while the distance in between the walls buttresses is about 6m. The design of the new building complex is based on the typology of those longitu dinal walls on an average grid (arsenals, buttresses) defined at 8m. A semi-open space is created between the Arsenals and the building, indicating the historic gap between the buildings. A shelter is placed in this area expressing concep tual bridging and historical continuity.

It is about a scenario for Kibera slum in Nairobi proposing to replace the slums in the region of Kianda with structures that could provide a significant im provement of the living conditions of its inhabitants and a smooth integration of the area to the existing urban tissue.
A series of maps were created asso ciated with the population, the struc tures, the networks, education, health, density and economic activities. Then plans were made with reference to each specific sector providing an inte grated sustainable planning based on the needs of the area and its inhabi tants. Uses of a supra-local nature are mainly located on the perimeter while internally three neighborhood centers are created, connected via a central pedestrian walkway and a flea mar ket. On the riverside, a park is created and on the west, areas for cultivation.

Mapping homelessness in Athens map cretaed: 05/2021-06/2021 | Apostolopoulos Ioannes 1 km

A historical retrospective is attempted starting from the Neolithic revolution where primitive humanity transitions from nomadic life to the creation of settlements. The concept of proper ty and permanent residence appears and with it we could argue that the first vagrants appear too. Drawing on philosophical currents such as Cynicism, movements such as that of the Beats, the Hippies, and prominent vagrants, an attempt is made to understand vagrancy as a defection from constructed social institutions and, on occasion, perhaps even towards the search for lost contact with nature. At the same time, the respective systems and their prob lematics that led in different historical periods to the rise of the phenomenon are analysed.
Gradually we are led from vagrancy to home lessness, the various practices of its manage ment at a global level and the case of Athens are analysed. Practices such as Housing First, the Staircase approach, the role of social enter prises, structures and various housing practic es. Positions from Architects and artists, both design and theoretical, are presented while thoughts on housing precarity, public space and the acceptance of diversity in it are developed.
RESEARCH HOMELESSNESSON IN ATHENS

abstract
The survey refers to Homelessness in Ath ens. By interpreting the term “homelessness” we could argue that this phenomenon is re lated to the lack of shelter. And this may be partly true. However, homelessness is a dia chronic phenomenon certainly much more complex than the quick interpretation we get by analyzing the term and as such it is exam ined in this research. Using an interdisciplin ary approach of extensive field research and interaction with the streets through the archi tectural lens, a comprehensive interpretation of the phenomenon of homelessness is at tempted. Athens is the case study of this re search giving a unique identity to this study of an otherwise international phenomenon.
