An administrative Uruk pictographic clay tablet relating to farm produce. Written on both sides with proto-Cuneifom script; lentoid cross-section. Uruk was an ancient city by the Euphrates River, modern day Iraq and roughly south of Bagdad. Proto-Cuneiform writing was an early form of Cuneiform writing that began in the Mesopotamian regions, it was widely used for economical records such as this tablet itself. A pottery figure in buff colour depicting Astarte. The figure has bird-like facial features with big round eyes and a perforated headdress. Astarte was a prominent ancient Near Eastern goddess, originating from Phoenician and Canaanite civilisations. She was worshipped for her role in love, fertility, war and the cosmos. Typically, she was depicted as a poised and regal figure with symbolic elements like doves and ears of grain, symbolising fertility and prosperity. In some representations, she holds a shield and spear, indicating her association to warfare.

An agate stone seal with a cone-shaped body is adorned with an image of the Lamassu, a mythical creature from ancient Mesopotamian mythology. The Lamassu is depicted as a human-headed winged bull, with powerful muscles and a regal posture. The figure is depicted facing to the left, with wings outstretched and a bow at the ready. Its human head is adorned with a crown or headdress. The stone seal is threaded onto a delicate gold hoop with overlapping terminals to secure it.

A substantial grey schist of Bodhisattva Maitreya. The bodhisattva stands on a plinth that is adorned with a central seated Buddha, framed by pairs of devout followers. The figure of Maitreya has gracefully cascading robes. His face is characterised by downcast eyes, beneath softly arched brows. The adornments, such as the braided necklace and the urna centered on his forehead, are suggestive of his status. 460. CHINESE BUDDHIST STELE


Northern Wei Dynasty, Ca. 386-534 BC

An exceptionally well-formed stele, carved in four registers, all of which depict scenes from the life of Buddha. The uppermost panel shows the Buddha Shakyamuni under the legendary Bodhi tree, surrounded by figures. It was under this tree that the prince and spiritual teacher Siddartha Gautama sat and attained enlightenment, transcending his earthly life and becoming the Buddha. The scenes below are all of similar construction, featuring the Buddha at the centre, flanked by two followers on each side, framed by an arch. This arch decreases in complexity, with an intricate, spiralling pattern adorning the top of the second register, followed by a plain design on the scenes below.
