Organising your wedding is probably the biggest event you’ll ever have to plan. Even if you’re having a small wedding there’s much to think about and organise. It can be overwhelming with so much to arrange and you’ll probably need help from a number of sources.

Theme and Colour Selecting your theme is an important step to achieving a memorable wedding

A

theme will help with your planning, and make that perfect day of yours more memorable for you and your guests.

The sky is the limit as far as a theme goes and you probably have numerous ideas already. You could create some drama with a black and white theme, or an Art Deco theme with vintage cars and dry martini cocktails or even create a village fete with flags and bunting.

Another way to create a theme is to focus on a joint interest such as a sport, horses, a favourite band or piece of music.

Your theme will link with the colours you choose for your dresses, the flowers, the guys outfits, invitations, decorations, transport and the cake.

Your venue could also be a key to choosing a theme. A beach wedding might call for a casual style of dress with a seashell theme, maybe even tropical flowers followed by cocktails and a seafood barbecue.

Creating a mood board or scrap book is an effective and fun way of visualising how certain colours and textures would look together. You can

add pictures of bouquets, dresses, shoes and cakes.

Experiment with clippings and pin them on a board alongside fabric swatches or keep track of great ideas on Pinterest.

Your wedding budget Planning a wedding is a big financial undertaking, so you'll want to get the most for your money and not be plagued by unexpected expenses

I

f you decide later to cancel or alter any of the arrangements with your venue, caterer, photographer, chauffeur, will you get your money back?

Make sure all quotes are GST inclusive and not added later when payment is required.

Be aware that extra time and distance to your venue can incur increased charges for transport, photographer, celebrant and catering. Once guest numbers are confirmed with the caterer you will be charged per head for that number, even if someone doesn't attend on the day.

Standard marquee hire may not include linings and a dance floor.

Hire of tableware, cutlery and glasses may incur loss and breakage fees. You may also need insurance cover with some companies.

Wedding and engagement rings Love is never ending, just as a ring has no end

A

t the engagement stage few couples give thought to the wedding rings, often leaving their purchase until closer the wedding. While this is good for the pocket, after all you don't want to shock the groom with a double purchase of bling, it does pay to have an idea of the wedding ring you want when shopping for the engagement ring.

Consider if you will want to wear the engagement ring and the wedding ring together. If so, they will have to not only fit well together on the finger but complement each other. Most choose the same metals, but yellow and white gold can also look chic depending on the design. If the setting and style of your engagement ring is very detailed, a plainer wedding ring will offset it better.

However, if you are going to wear your wedding ring on its own, you may want something more interesting than a plain band. Jewellers report that

wedding rings with stone settings are now more often requested than plain settings.

Also consider if you want 'his and hers' rings that give a nod to each other's design to reflect your romantic bond. You can also request for your rings to be engraved, with the wedding date and initials or something personal to you both.

very bride wants that once in a lifetime dress. Finding it may take you on a search of many different options, whether you buy, hire, make, borrow, inherit or have it designed.

Having a gown designed and made just for you is the ultimate in individuality, but naturally it will cost you more than a readymade dress.

hile you may head for bridal shops and designers to source gowns for your girlfriends, dresses are back "in" and there are numerous places to go looking on their behalf.

You will certainly find signature bridesmaid collections while you are looking for your own bridal gown. The advantage of that is finding a similar style to your own, a complementary design or fabric and the dresses being available in a range of sizes and colours.

W

ho could resist the sight of a flower girl and page boy walking hand in hand down the aisle, it’s almost too cute. However, using small children also comes with risks such as moodiness and fidgeting. For those prepared to take the chance there’s plenty of choice of cool, comfortable and appropriate clothing for boys and girls.

You can create a dress for your flower girl in the same design as your dress if it’s appropriate, or use the same fabric in a suitable little girl style. Thai silk, dotted voile, satin, and tulle are popular combinations.

Alternatively keep the dress simple and match a detail from your own

gown such as a lace bolero or overlay, a rosette or appliqué, crystal beads or pearl buttons to shimmer and shine.

Lace wedding dresses can be purchased at bridal and ballet shops or made at the same time as your own gown. But for a less expensive option, find a simple white or cream dress in children’s wear shops or department stores and trim with your own choice of embellishments.

To add colour, match a sash to your bridesmaid’s gowns or flowers or loop the skirt over a petticoat of lace, pastel print or ribbon trim.

A

large portion of your budget will be allocated to your reception so the choice of venue needs careful thought. You’ll have an idea of your theme by now, which should help decide where to hold the reception.

Think about the closeness of the reception venue to the ceremony, the time of day, type of food and entertainment you’d like.

Would you like a formal sit down meal with table service or a buffet which might be less expensive or will you hire caterers?

This is wine country and therefore vineyards are extremely popular for weddings and receptions. Conveniently close to town our wineries offer indoor and outdoor options, award winning wines and first rate cuisine with fresh produce.

However, we’re fortunate in Hawke’s Bay to also have a great selection of hotels, restaurants, lodges and historic homesteads alongside function centres, gardens, clubs, halls for hire and marquee hire.

When you visit your shortlisted reception venues check what is included in the price per head. The functions team should give advice on how much alcohol to order per head for toasts, during meals etc. If you’re on a tight

budget ask if you able to take own alcohol.

Decide on whether there will be a cash bar and make the arrangements clear to your guests in the invitation to save embarrassment.

If you are hiring a marquee you may need to factor in hire of wedding furniture, crockery, glassware, table linen and toilets, lighting, heating, flooring, tables, and chairs.

There are local hire companies offering everything from vases to chair covers, candelabras and more.

If it’s a large wedding with a formal meal you’ll need a seating plan. Traditionally the bride and groom and close family generally sit at the top table.

Try and group people on tables according to whether they are friends or relatives and take into account any family feuds. You don’t want to waste much time having people find their seats so you could number the tables or give them names somehow related to your theme. Post a plan at the entrance to the reception so guests can check where they are sitting beforehand and use personal name tags to help your guests find their seats.

Contemporary cakes You can have your cake and eat it too!

T

raditionally the tiered, iced fruitcake was a ‘must have’ at weddings although they have gone out of fashion as couples want something that reflects their personalities.

But where to start as there’s so much choice and so many flavours and designs?

Options include round, square, stacked, cup-cakes, profiteroles, meringue, ice-cream, sorbet, chocolate, red, yellow, pink. How about a carrot cake, lemon or banana flavour, a fruity theme or something to match your wedding gown? The only limit these days is your imagination.

There are some excellent cake designers in Hawke’s Bay who are only too happy to discuss your ideas and offer samples for the all-important taste test. Most of them will also have an album of photos so you see a range of their work.

Practical considerations include the number of guests and whether the cake will be served as dessert. If you are getting married in the height of a Hawke’s Bay summer consider the temperature and choose a cake that will not melt before the end of the reception.

After the meal, the bride and groom traditionally make the first cut together. This first piece is shared between the couple with the groom feeding the bride first, then the bride feeding the groom.

East Pier is currently undergoing a multi-million dollar redevelopment creating a 24 bedroom luxury hotel. Evoking mood and atmosphere, flowers are traditional at weddings

N

o matter what your budget, flowers are generally an important aspect of your wedding adding atmosphere, creating impact and visual appeal.

Traditionally they were a sign of fertility, warded off evil and masked unpleasant odours!

There are many considerations when selecting flowers for your big day such as the overall wedding theme, the colour scheme, the season and whether it’s a formal or informal celebration.

A good florist will help you choose what’s best for you and your budget. You might ask to see a portfolio of their work before settling on a florist you think will do a good job. Word of mouth and personal recommendation is also a good way of picking a floral artist.

Talk to friends who have recently married and see who they recommend. After you’ve decided on your theme and colour schemes visit your chosen florist with colour swatches and chat about your options.

You will need to plan your flowers carefully and order for the bride, bridesmaids’ and flower girls, the groom, best man, attendants, page boys, mothers and grandmothers, fathers, grandfathers and ushers.

Don’t forget the all important floral decorations for the wedding ceremony and reception venue.

The mane event Your hairstyle should complement the style of your dress

lan your hairstyle well in advance of your wedding day especially if you are thinking about growing or colouring your hair.

There are many options and aspects to consider such as a hair style that links in with your overall theme and the style of your gown. You could be contemporary, have a vintage or retro style or go bohemian. One of the major decisions is whether to have your hair loose and flowing for a natural look or an updo for a more sophisticated look.

Collect clippings of hair styles you think would suit your big day and take them along to your stylist who will be happy to help work out the best style, colour and cut.

Arrange for a trial styling to ensure you are happy with the hairstyle you have chosen and make sure you have firm bookings for the wedding day.

When you’ve decided on your style take any accessories to your stylist so she can cut your hair to suit to ensure you look perfect on the day.

Most brides prefer to have their hair done together with their bridesmaids on the day of the wedding. Many stylists, and makeup artists, will visit you at home or wherever you are preparing for the wedding to save stress.

Bridal Make up should be special Makeup artist Vania Bailey has some tips to help you look gorgeous on your wedding day

I

f your big day is coming up soon here are a few tips to help you get through one of the biggest days of your life.

While the men play golf, watch the rugby and take only 10 minutes to get ready the bride’s day is the complete opposite. So here is some good advice- on your wedding day every bride should look herself – gorgeous!

Don’t try and look trendy or different from your usual style. Long lasting makeup is a must so it still looks amazing well after the ceremony.

Your makeup needs to look timeless in the photos, so that in 10 years’ time you can look back and still love how you looked.

I recommend having a makeup trial at the same time as your hair trial so you can get a picture of what you will look like on the day.

A run through with both makeup artist and hairdresser allows you to be happy and confident with your look for your big day.

Remember, there is a big difference between everyday clothes and a wedding dress, so there should be a difference in your makeup and hair do.

Follow my tips that will help any ‘bride to be’ prepare for her big day: Hydrate

Waxing

Drink lots of water daily to hydrate the skin. You can also try green tea or add a slice of lemon in your water to help it go down easier. This will also help to flush out toxins.

Make sure all waxing and facials are done at least a week before. If you are getting Botox, you need to get this done a month before, in case there is any bruising. Also remember it takes two weeks to work.

Alcohol Limit your intake of alcohol and watch the calories fall off. Alcohol is very hard on your liver, especially in females as we also have hormones to deal with and we tend to crave more fatty, sugary foods.

Take relaxing baths Soaking in Epsom Salts will help exfoliate and smooth the skin, whilst milk powder can also soften skin.

Light a candle and relax. It is very important to slow down and appreciate your surroundings.

Exercise 2-3 times a week to both strengthen your body and calm your mind. Try to get as much sleep as possible and eat healthy. Eat lots of wholegrain and stay away from white carbohydrates. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables; remember you are what you eat!

Trial your lashes If you want lashes, you have the choice of semi-permanent or lashes that you wear for just the one day that your makeup artist will apply for you.

If you are not 100% comfortable wearing lashes, don’t wear them. Just a few lashes in the corners of the outer eye will help lift the eyes.

Pack a makeup bag It is a great idea to pack a small makeup bag for touch ups on the day.

Keep it simple – blotting paper, a compact, lip colour or gloss, cotton buds, tissues and mints. To finish, bring along a small bottle of perfume.

Now to all of you newly engaged brides to be – get booking and trialing!

Don’t be afraid to book 12 months in advance, it is very common in this industry. I have brides booking me 2 years in advance.

Your vows are the key promises that are the foundation of a happy marriage.

Chat with the marriage celebrant to check the out the requirements as far as vows are concerned. Legally there could be a couple of important words that need to be included in the ceremony and your marriage celebrant will be happy to advise you.

If you decide to write your own vows it can be difficult to get started but

bear in mind they should be simple but meaningful.

Discuss and agree with your partner whether you’ll both say the same words or each write individual vows. You should agree on the general tone such as romantic or light hearted.

he music for your ceremony should express love and commitment which could mean a live performance of a favourite song or a CD, traditional hymns or for traditionalists a wedding march. If you have chosen a church wedding options include an organist, string quartet or a solo singer or musician.

Your wedding theme could influence your style of music or band - jazz, a DJ or hire a juke box? After the meal is time for people to relax and start partying so the choice of music should encourage people to get to their feet.

For the reception music, if you are hiring a DJ or a band, when your guests RSVP, ask them to name their favourite song and add it to the playlist. You may choose to make your own iTunes compilation to play during parts of the reception.

Looking picture perfect Choosing your wedding photographer or videographer is right up there with choosing Mr Right. To help you make the right decision, top Hawke's Bay photographer, Eva Bradley, has some tips

ots of brides start by telling me they aren't photogenic. But my response is always the same; when have you ever been photographed a thousand times in a day, by an experienced professional, while you're wearing a designer gown with perfect hair and makeup?

You are going to look amazing, end of story. But finding the right person to capture that for you is an important decision and it's worth considering a few key things before booking a photographer or videographer.

1. Fall in love with their work The best photographer is one whose work gives you an instant emotional reaction. Fall in love with their style in the same way you fall in love with your dress.

2. Look at lots of photos!

Professional photographers and videographers will have a website (not just a Facebook page) and won't just show you a 'Greatest Hits' collection but a full wedding day (preferably at your venue).

Make sure the work you are shown comes from real

weddings, with all the pressures that come with a fast-paced wedding day.

3. You get what you pay for In Hawke's Bay there is a huge variation in price for wedding photography and video - some charge under a thousand dollars, some over $4,000. While time spent on the day and items included in the package contributes to the quote, mostly you're paying for the experience, reputation and skill of the person behind the lens. A top photographer can make a low-budget wedding look incredible but an inexperienced one can make even the most lavish one look disappointing.

4. Seek out word on the street Ask friends and other wedding suppliers to recommend a photographer or videographer, or give you feedback on those you are considering.

5. Book early Photographers and videographers are usually the next thing booked after the venue. It's not uncommon for good ones to be booked more than a year in advance.

Arrive in Style The theme, style or atmosphere of a wedding is often reflected in the mode of transport chosen for the bride's arrival

Y

ou might want to make your entrance or exit in unique style, but it is wise to check out availability and practicality when making your choice of wedding vehicle.

Classic or vintage cars - These tend to be booked up well in advance so act quickly once you’ve decided on the date for the wedding.

Double-decker bus or coach - A bus, a fun way to get around, can also transport your wedding guests, ensuring they find their way to the ceremony and reception and that they are delivered safely back to their accommodation.

Boat - If you’re going near waterways, arriving by boat could be just the ticket.

Horse and carriage or horseback - For a truly romantic start to your ceremony nothing can beat arriving in a horse-drawn carriage.

Helicopter - What about a chopper for serious thrills and a grand entrance? If there’s a distance to travel it could also be quite practical.

Two wheelers- For something even less conventional, you might consider a vintage motorbike and sidecar or a tandem bike.

Whatever type of transport you choose, you will still want comfort, punctuality and reliability.

Grooming the groom Today’s grooms are keen to create a look that suits their own personality while enhancing the bride’s outfit

T

hese days most grooms are not afraid to express their own style and it seems that anything goes from suits and ties to shorts and jandals. Much depends, of course, on the theme of the wedding, the venue and the degree of formality.

The groom usually wears something to distinguish him from his best man and groomsmen. They might wear the same suits but different coloured shirts or perhaps a differently styled jacket.

Men too come in all shapes and sizes and care should be taken to choose a suit, or outfit to suit body type. A tall, thin guy might suit a double breasted jacket and pleated trousers but a shorter male may suit a longer jacket and tailored trousers.

Small touches make all the difference such as coordinated ties, matching socks or special cufflinks which work together to blend with the tone of the ceremony and overall colour scheme.

Just as the bride needs to work on a health and beauty program so does the groom. Both the bride and groom both need to be in tip top condition, fit, healthy and looking their best. Why not work out together as a couple or diet and exercise together?

Let’s not forget the hair which will need styling several weeks ahead of the wedding to give it time to settle for the photographs. Extra care with the cut and conditioning will ensure all the men look their best.

A manicure will have his hands looking good for the photos. Don’t forget the all important finishing touches such as shoes, socks, cufflinks, watch and a belt.

New Owners excited about their beautiful venue The Old Church is an iconic venue in the Hawkes Bay and it attracts wedding s from all over NZ and returning wedding couples from offshore.

New Owners Moira Irving and Garry Walker are excited about taking on this lovely venue.

They come with plenty of experience with Moira having owned the beautiful Waiau Country Estate in Taranaki.

Moira and Garry wish to make the villa available for smaller more intimate weddings and functions of up to 40.

Well known chef Andy Glover has been employed as Head Chef. Jacinda Esau who has been at the Church for the last three years managing our weddings is Restaurant Manager and Wedding Planner. Along with Moira and Garry they make up a very experienced senior team.

While The Old Church is a perfect wedding venue it is far more than that. On a lovely day dining outside in the grounds is a perfect option. On a balmy evening dine under the stars. Choose to be seated in the conservatory or in the body of the church itself under the magnificent chandelier.

Planning checklist Even the simplest wedding requires careful planning to ensure everything runs like clockwork 6 months or more before your wedding: • Decide on the type of wedding, number of guests, style of reception and a budget.

• Choose the venue and time for the ceremony and reception.

• Check venue and caterer availability and book.

• Select and book a celebrant or meet the minister or priest at your church.

• Secure your best man, groomsmen and bridal attendants’.

• Draw up a provisional guest list.
