Whanganui food safety consultant Roy Biggs was heavily involved in the poultry industry and government joint strategy that changed New Zealand’s reputation as “the campylobacter capital of the world”.

Biggs is an award-winning food technology expert who worked in the poultry industry for Tegel Foods for 19 years before “retiring” and setting up on his own.

“There has been a huge amount of change for the good,” Biggs said.

“There is recognition by senior management in all the food industry that the best way of protecting your brand is making sure you don’t hurt people when they’re eating your product.

“I’m very proud of the campylobacter strategy we developed. There’s a lot less campylobacter from poultry than there used to be. Nine thousand fewer people a year are getting sick.

“Salmonella on chicken is down from a baseline of 17 per cent in 1996 to an annual average of less than 0.2 per cent for the last five years. It’s due to hard work by a lot of people.”

Biggs said the growth of social media had also had an impact on the food industry.

“It’s so easy now for people to say what’s happened to them and for the message to spread. It’s a very powerful way of expressing yourself.”

Biggs began his career in the United Kingdom, working in the dairy and salmon processing industries. A “mid-life crisis” when he was in his 40s saw Biggs and his family move to New Zealand.

After working for a short time as an immigration consultant in Whanganui, Biggs was employed by Tegel and soon became the company’s head technical manager.

“I was involved in negotiations with the Government and major customers and in overseas marketing activity so we could sell raw chicken to Australia.

That took seven years.

“I’m still contracted to Tegel and other major poultry companies are also clients. I’ve also worked for pasta, pate, honey and cleaning products companies.”

Biggs has clients in Auckland, Papua New Guinea, Cambodia and the United Kingdom. He also has one client in Whanganui and says he would like to help other local businesses with risk management programmes and custom food control plans.

The International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) has recognised Biggs’ commitment to excellence in food safety with its 2018 International Leadership Award. The award will be presented in Salt Lake City, Utah, in July.

He won the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology’s JC Andrews Award in 2017. The award recognises institute members who have made a substantial contribution to science and technology and leadership in the food industry.

Biggs said the food industry was “great to be in”. “I’ve just been really lucky,” he said. “I’ve been in the right place at the right time with the right skills.”

Hidden killers are lurking in Whanganui district water tanks, prompting a warning to keep tanks maintained and clean. Richard Campbell has come across a number of tank horror stories since he and his wife Anna started up SafeH20 in Wanganui last year.

Danny and Julie Perkins noticed soon after moving to their Turakina Valley property four years ago that the whole family was getting sick.

“All five of us were sick,” Mrs Perkins recalls, “we just couldn’t shake it”. Symptoms included vomiting and diarrhoea, and when they persisted for more than two weeks, the family started to suspect their water supply.

“There was no funny taste, and the water wasn’t brown”, says Mrs Perkins, “but we decided to start boiling the water to see if it made a difference”.

The symptoms went away, and the family kept on boiling their drinking water - especially for the three children and visitors, who inevitably got sick if they drank the tap water.

“It just became routine to boil the water,” says Mrs Perkins. “I would always have several containers on my kitchen bench that I poured the boiled water into to let it cool, and we just used that for drinking and cooking.”

Richard Campbell says “The challenge with rural tanks is that over time, sediment from sprays, chemicals, ash, dust, animal and bird droppings, dead rodents, birds and vegetative matter forms a dense layer on the base of the tank. This sediment is a breeding ground and food source for potentially harmful bacteria that can make users of the water supply extremely unwell.”

“There are so many misconceptions out there. For example, many people think that because they have a filter, the tank doesn’t need cleaning. However, they don’t realise that sediment actually stops the filter working, meaning whatever is in your tank, such as pesticides, nitrates, giardia, campylobacter, E.coli and salmonella, will come straight out of your tap.”

The danger lies not only in drinking the water; even showering or washing your hands in contaminated

water can be harmful. While healthy adults in their prime can build up certain immunity to the bacteria, children, the elderly, and those with a compromised immune system are especially at risk.

Mrs Perkins remembers looking on in shock as Richard Campbell siphoned out litre after litre of black water from their water tanks. “I couldn’t believe it; I thought, ‘what am I doing to my family?’”

After having their tanks cleaned, the family have gone back to drinking tap water, and have had no further symptoms. “Water has always been first choice in our house; I feel so much better knowing my children can safely drink the tap water now,” says Mrs Perkins.

Richard says that Kiwis can be nonchalant about tank cleaning. One of his aims this year is to get people in Whanganui thinking more carefully about the health and quality of the water that they’re using.

Protecting yourself against scams There are so many scams – how do I spot one?

The commonest scams include emails asking you to send money to a friend or organisation, letters saying you’ve won a prize, or calls or visitors saying your computer needs fixing or your house needs painting. They’re run by people trying to steal money or get your information.

If a stranger tries to sell you something, beware. If an offer sounds too good to be true, or sounds weird, it’s almost certainly a scam.

A bank or Inland Revenue will never contact you to ask you to confirm your password, credit card or account details.

How can I protect myself?

Scammers can sound very plausible. So it’s best not to give any information about yourself to strangers – especially on the phone, at your door, or on your computer. Put the phone down, close your door, or delete the email.

Genuine businesses won’t put pressure on you. They’ll be happy to prove who they are. They’ll let you speak to a manager, and they’ll give you time to consider what you want to do.

Good Blue light (blue-turquoise part) is essential for overall well-being. It is necessary for regulation of the sleep/ wake cycles, mood and cognitive performances. But light can also be the cause of premature eye ageing.

Blue-violet light was recently identified as being harmful to retinal cells. Causing longterm damage to our eyes, it can accelerate the onset of age related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
