SimontoldOneRoofhisparentshad justtwohomesduringtheir61yearsof marriage.

TheylivedinInvercargillforalongtime, butinthelate1990sdecidedtomoveto Queenstown-Lakes,buyinga1.14haplotof landonSpeargrassFlatRoad.

ArrowtownarchitectMaxWildewas commissionedtocreateauniquehome.

“PeterandJillwantedtocapturethe feelingofaEuropean-stylehousewiththick walls,heavytimberbeams,andwooden joinery,”hesaid.

“Theywantedahousethatwasn’tyour run-of-the-millKiwihouseofthetime.It reallydoeslooklikeanoldEuropean-style property,likeinAustria,wherethey’vegot thoseverythickwalls.”

Thehome,dubbedTavistock,wasbuilt withatimberframeworkandHebelblock, thenplasteredontheoutside.

“Someofthehigher-endtourpeopleused tolovetakingclientstherebecausethe estatehasanamazinggarden.Sometimes mymotherwouldplaypianoforthem, andofcourse,they’dalsolookatdad’s paintings.”
