Auckland Home Show 2019 3

We love our homes! New Zealanders love their homes – and is it any wonder? You don’t need to read the dozens of studies around the globe that link home ownership with improved health, wellbeing and prosperity to know it’s a good idea to have your own roof over your head and floor beneath your feet. And this fact hasn’t changed! Despite huge demographic changes in Auckland in recent years, your home is the biggest investment you’ll ever make, and the interior, exterior and everything in between makes for an endless source of fascination. We should know - the Auckland Home Show celebrates a mighty 40th show this year. We started only a few years after colour tv came to New Zealand, when nearly every home came equipped with a Hills Hoist washing line and Goodnight Kiwi still put us to sleep each night. Yes, we’ve seen it all come and go, and we’ve been proud to see the many decorative ideas, the myriad of colour schemes, the new technology and the garden trends… and so much more!!! And this year, the Auckland Home Show welcomes TSB as presenting partner - an independent bank with 100% New Zealand ownership. TSB recently won the Consumer NZ People’s Choice Award for Banking for the fourth year in a row, and the KPMG New Zealand Customer Experience Excellence Award. These values strongly reflect the trusted brand and customer experience that we achieve at the Auckland Home Show. So, we’re very proud to have you join us for our 40th show and can’t wait to show you everything we have in store. See you at the show and happy home making!

Lushness and textured finishes abound this year – enjoy!

Tactile trends

Working that wood

A home that feels expensive pays attention to texture and indulges in items that exude a rich atmosphere. These days it is easier than ever to achieve a high end look in your home by simply playing with texture, giving a space dimension, creating comfort and visual interest. Soft furnishings are the most straightforward way to achieve this look with furnishings, cushions, throws and wall hangings. Next, move your focus to the walls, where Venetian plastering, battened walls, wainscoting, painted boards and wallpaper create an inviting, premium backdrop. Carpets and rugs should be heavily textured, shaggy or deep pile; and don’t forget the ceiling with crown moulding, coving or cornices.

Cushions from Republic Home, Stand 239

Doors, cabinets, walls - as the biggest outward facing surface areas in most homes, they provide the biggest opportunity to make a design statement. Plain wood or wood-look is creeping back into style on simply everything - but this time subtle enough to be future proof. As with many things in the design world, we have the Scandinavians to thank, as their simplistic, streamlined and natural aesthetic has heavily influenced this resurgence. But there are a few evolutions to help the 2020 versions remain contemporary, like choosing from a light, neutral palette of raw and natural patinas with low intensity cerused finishes for surface depth.

Green carpet The advanta ages of carpet are many; they are comfortable, soft underfoot, provide great insulation and deaden sound. But carpets shouldn’t just be considered for their practicality, they are a design element that takes up a decent portion of a room. Just like in aces in the home, products that are eco-friendly and most pla ous of their impact on the environment are on the rise – conscio and carpets are no different. The range of carpets made from recy ycled materials and are recyclable themselves has grown matically, and the most popular is the rope like sisal dram pet, made from plant fibres. Once coated with sealers carp o make it fire-retardant and stain-resistant it is a great to ooking and practical carpet that also loves the earth. lo

Visible Warmth Realism and nature combine in a new gas fireplace range Rinnai’s new Linear 800 fireplace features a unique new burner technology that creates a hyper-realistic flame. But even better than that, it’s inspired by driftwood from the New Zealand beach.

Low impact

The fastest growing demand in home design is for products that offer luxury, beauty and style without harmful consequences for nature. To achieve this, homeowners are looking backwards with renewed interest in retro natural materials like rattan or cane and choosing to invest in pieces that are recycled and refurbished, reducing demand for cheap new products created solely for short term use. At the same time there is a solid view to the future, supporting experimental materials created from existing waste or sustainable resources, handcrafted elements over mass manufacturing and anything with a social conscience.

Rinnai’s brief for the new Linear 800 fireplace, was to create super realism, but with an organic feel. To achieve this, they utilised highly innovative technology that Rinnai has named FlameTech, where the ceramic log itself is the burner. Instead of the log sitting on the fire, the flames emanate directly from the log itself. This leading-edge technology is brand new in New Zealand and revolutionises the realistic woodburning effect. In modern gas fires, the logs are the central element, so the team took their inspiration from New Zealand’s natural, beachy landscape identity. Rinnai’s FlameTech logs took two years to develop, moulded from real driftwood collected on a West Auckland beach. Pebbles were also selected, and also moulded from the real artefacts, to keep the whole look as real as possible. Rinnai is constantly researching what people want from their fireplace and what is important, from both a performance and aesthetic perspective. Performance is easier of the two – people want heat and a focal point, but the aesthetic part is more subjective and personal. Rinnai has always made a point of using energy wisely and making fireplaces energy efficient with fan systems and heat exchangers, so that they also function as heaters. Many fireplaces are marginal on the heating side but hungry on energy resources. Rinnai fireplaces are not just showcase pieces in the lounge, they are functional appliances that heat the home well. To find out more about the new Linear collection and other innovative gas fireplace ranges, visit Rinnai at Stand 330

Ready, steady, grow! Plants elevate a stylish interior into somewhere to rest and rejuvenate, and are an easy, affordable way to freshen up your interiors. To turn your home into a forest filled with fabulous foliage, you are looking for plants that can thrive without constant maintenance or direct access to sunlight. Most foliage plants do best in bright, indirect light, like south facing windowsills. Desert cacti and most succulents are sun lovers and need a sustained period of direct afternoon sun. Some plants don’t fare well in the bathroom because of low light and humidity but others, like potted palms or maidenhair ferns, positively thrive for the same reason. Tropical plant pals like ferns are the biggest fans of humid air and will make a happy home in your bathroom as well an exotic addition to your decor.

Don’t know your green from your greige? Never fear! Here’s a few of the latest colour trends from Resene to help you get inspired.

Embracing the dark

Tone on tone

Interiors going out

Talking points

Dark hues are cocooning in bedroom and living spaces, creating spaces to hunker down and relax in, away from busy life.

While neutral colours are still popular, there is a trend to using more variations of a colour to avoid a bland colour scheme.

As nature comes indoors, we also see our interiors start to head outdoors, with outdoor living spaces and rooms that look like they could be inside a home, but are designed to be enjoyed outdoors.

Wallpaper features are continuing to be popular with a fresh line-up of designs to choose from. Styles range from faux finishes through to quirky conversational pieces that bring a sense of energy and life.

Battens up

For the love of timber

Classic complements

Unleash your inner artist

Dimension and design are being added to dark feature walls using battens. Battens can be arranged in a variety of designs and add sophistication, style and beautiful shadowing to enhance dark feature walls.

Rather than painting over it, the latest trends are to clear finish timber, to protect the timber and keep a natural look and sheen.

Colour blocking has evolved from a myriad of blocks of different colours into more randomly placed blocks of colour, larger and used in place of art as a feature on their own.

The trend in hand-painted wall murals is for a relaxed, anything goes, freehand style including small painted features that meander over your walls to sections of colour, doodled lines and curves that move across spaces from wall to floor, wall to wall or wall to ceiling.

Resene’s light touch makes illumination easy Light switches are globally understood. We aren’t saying they should go away, but if you have ever fumbled for one in the dark or behind a piece of furniture, then Resene SmartTouch is for you. How does it work? Simply apply basecoats of Resene SmartTouch conductive coating, connect into the switch plate and overcoat with your choice of Resene topcoat or wallpaper. Then tap to turn the lights on and off!

Resene SmartTouch is ideal for areas such as hallways, open plan living areas, bedrooms and garages. It can cover large parts of the wall to enable tall and short, young and old, mobile and mobilityimpaired occupants and guests to turn the lights on and off, even if they can’t easily reach a normal light switch. Check out the demo panel on display on the Resene stand, 288 in Hall 2 at the Auckland Home Show.

Hot Product Fisher & Paykel’s Classic Freestanding Cooker blends modern functionality with an iconic, heritage look, for a cooking appliance that delivers perfect results and stands out as the hero of the kitchen. Available in your choice of black, white, red and stainless steel.

Fisher & Paykel - Noel Leeming, Stand 301

This year the Auckland Home Show has more major kitchen brands than ever before, offering a stunning selection of everything for the kitchen. Samsung joins the lineup, presented by Noel Leeming, Kiwi inspiration from Fisher & Paykel, colour and Italian style from Smeg, award winning brilliance from ASKO, innovation and design from Whirlpool, German brilliance from Bosch, and more!

Hidden kitchen With an ever-increasing number of appliances or technical gadgets in our homes and space at a premium, designers are coming up with creative ways to integrate, hide or have devices perform double duty. Mostly born out of the heavy shift towards open plan and apartment living, there has been a growing demand for appliances to be less visible in living spaces. With a couple of exceptions, the new face of luxury in the kitchen is appliances designed to recede into the background instead of stand out. Induction cooktops continue to be increasingly popular because of their seamless look, while appliance companies already offer dishwasher, fridge, microwave and oven configurations that fit behind cabinetry doors or provide colour options to help them blend into the kitchen.

Samsung – Noel Leeming, Stand 301 SMEG Dolce Stil Novo, Stand 460

TREND ALERT! All Things Copper, Stand 725

Go for gold In Olympic year, it’s all gold in the kitchen! Precious and industrial metals are more popular than ever before, with gold, copper, bronze and graphite showing, not just in taps and mixers, but in basins, sinks and exposed pipes as well.

Smart stuff As one of the rooms you spend the most time in technology will play a key role in the evolution of kitchen design. Smart appliances, Bluetooth/WIFI connectivity and remotecontrol operations will soon be commonplace as will the ability to personalise everything to your taste, from how you like your morning espresso to ordering groceries you like from the local supermarket. There will be a massive skew towards technology that promotes water and energy consumption, grows food inhouse, minimises waste and even does recycling for you.

14 Auckland Home Show 2019

Linear lighting Task lighting is important for a kitchen – ambient overheads don’t highlight specific workspaces or improve aesthetic appeal. Particularly if you have a kitchen island, LED linear pendant lights are the go – they can mark out different areas within an open space, focus light on task areas, offer atmosphere for entertaining and fit effortlessly with the seamless kitchen theme of 2020. LEDs are directional and reduce the need for reflectors and diffusers, so they can be efficient but understated... and they come in a range of designs that means you aren’t limited to a super modern look. Consider dimmers if available and put a switch at the entryway to the kitchen and a bit closer to the actual light so you don’t have to cross the room to turn it on and off.

Make a statement with your island lighting with Wave, from Flua - Stand 245

No hardware Entering the next decade, we will find kitchen hardware being replaced with subtle edge pulls, push to open doors, inset, cutout or recessed handles for an uncluttered, sleek, seamless cabinetry. Hardware as a visual design element is out, anything that blends with cabinetry is in – it’s a simple and functional way of making a quiet impact.

Statement air extraction Extractors have been an often-ugly necessity in the kitchen to ventilate the buildup of steam, smoke and smells created by cooking. In seasons past designers worked hard to create extractor fans that can be easily camouflaged by over-hob cabinetry in line with the rising trend of integrated appliances (see Hidden Kitchen). But the latest selection of rangehoods are so unique and beautiful you simply have to show them off. Almost a piece of functional art, expect to see a lot more statement hoods emerging in kitchens around the country.

Samsung makes their fridge the heart of the connected home

Blum, Stand 460

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home… Well, you could say therefore that the fridge is the heart of the heart! Samsung’s next generation Family Hub, powered by the new Family Hub 4.0 software update will change everything you ever thought about fridges. The top of the range SRF825BFH4 is Samsung’s largest and most advanced refrigerator yet, offering 825 litres of space. And yes it chills things perfectly, but it is the advanced connectivity that makes this fridge a showstopper. Family Hub 4.0 provides phone mirroring support, which allows the Family Hub to answer phone calls and control third-party apps from a compatible Galaxy S6 smartphone and above. Premium speakers make for an enhanced in-kitchen entertainment experience, whether for Netflix, podcasts or cooking playlist. And you can talk to it as well, using the Bixby voice command to assist and help with a range of day-to-day tasks, from finding the nearest restaurant to checking tomorrow’s weather forecast, or connect the family by sharing notes, pictures, videos, and music via the new Family Board functionality. See The Samsung Family Hub refrigerator on the Noel Leeming stand, 301, at the Auckland Home Show.

The desire to get back to nature and to eat what you sow yourself, has seen a resurgence in green houses throughout the country. Choose from toughened safety glass or twin skin polycarbonate models to suit any section.

Outdoor flow. Is it a garden or simply an extension of the home?

Up the Garden Path. Brilliant planting and textures make magic for this garden path

Is the backyard dream changing in New Zealand? What did they want and what do they want now? The big back yard is no longer a necessity. The focus with clients these days is on an all year round entertainment area that can add another room to your house. Bigger decks/patios and outdoor kitchens are the new musts for Kiwi back yards. Is the perfect lawn still the most important feature of a modern home? Is that changing? People these days don’t have the time to keep that perfect lawn anymore. If anything the trend is going towards something more low maintenance. With the enhancement to the realism of Astro lawn, clients are choosing a lawn that will always look perfect and requires no mowing.

What’s the first thing you consider when planning a garden? Levels, with any landscape design levels, is always the first thing we consider. Transition from decks to the house. Level out areas with retaining for playable spaces. We let the levels dictate our design and then choose areas to focus in on to make the most impact. What’s the most common mistake people make in their gardens? Starting multiple small projects with no common theme! With Pinterest and Instagram, people see ideas that they think they can replicate in their home. They start multiple small projects but at the end, realise that it doesn’t quite look right on their properties. Ideas only look great when they work in unison to a common theme.

Three key garden trends to watch Backing black Too often we think of white as the default paint colour for outdoors, but just as interiors are embracing a moody, darker palette – it’s time to take your paintbrushes outside and paint it black. From fences to sheds, pergolas to dividers, black is a must for every contemporary outdoor space and will provide a striking backdrop for existing furniture, lush foliage and jewel-coloured flowers.

Privacy please Everyone should have the right to not be observed or disturbed in their own home, but urbanisation has made privacy a challenge. While it’s said ‘good fences make good neighbours’ it’s sometimes not enough to protect you from the gazes of next door. High planters create different areas and keep an area looking tidy , or create a living screen with a dense variety of climber.

Outdoor kitchen The popularity of outdoor kitchens has risen alongside our love for entertaining, allowing space for guests to gather and socialise while food is prepared, rather than crowding indoor kitchens that are usually getting more compact. Considering shelter, warmth, lighting, seating and eating surfaces, an outdoor kitchen can extend your living space and add value to a home.

Blinging up the bathroom is often the most challenging, but also the most rewarding of projects. Here’s the main trends to watch this year!

Terrazzo terrific Terrazzo has long been a trend in composite countertops and floors for commercial spaces, but thanks to its durability and wide variety of colour options, it is invading the residential market and taking the bathroom by storm. Whether you choose the terrazzo treatment for tiles, sink surrounds or just accessories, it’s confetti-like appearance adds a touch of happiness to any space. For a bathroom or en-suite that is truly joyful, pair terrazzo with neo mint.

Wonderful wood For many the idea of putting wood furnishings and decorative features into the bathroom may conjure up the image of a sauna; but wood is just as trendy and chic in the bathroom as it is in other areas of the house. It can make what is traditionally a cool space warmer and more inviting, add texture, ground bold style choices and add to a feeling of wellbeing. And it doesn’t only fit in with décor that’s rustic and raw; wood is suitable for a wide range of aesthetics and style sensibilities, from a blonde finish that keeps a monochrome aesthetic bright and airy, to darker woods adding dimension to a light focused design. To ensure bathroom wood retains its appearance, it is particularly important to have good ventilation, regularly oil it and ensure it is never wet for a long time, but with more and more of us are craving nature in our living spaces like never before, wood is a wonderful material to incorporate into the littlest room in the house.

Tile Space, Stand 354

Minty fresh If you like a fresh, crisp look to your bathroom the trend forecasters have great news! Goodbye Millennial Pink: the start of the new decade welcomes Neo Mint as the colour of the year, a soft pastel green that celebrates the appeal of Mid Century Modern with a firm Neo Mint eye to the future. Neo mint is well suited to bathrooms due to its optimistic character and associations with nature and the outdoors, offering a zingy energy that will be a welcome sight in the mornings. Add small doses by way of accessories such as towels or shower curtains to break up existing white, or go all out with spearmint tiles and sinks, baths and toilets in pale jade.

Bowl basins

Viego, Stand 365

Especially in ensuites and compact cloakrooms, bathroom sinks are also saying goodbye to the traditional rectangle and hello to the round with lay-on washbasins. With an extensive palette of contemporary pigment options, white is yesterday’s news too. Some designers have been taking this trend to another level completely by creating above counter bowl basins that look like actual bowls, richly decorated with designs from ancient Chinese porcelain to pre-historic Peruvian ceramics. When paired with exposed plumbing and wood or glass counter tops, you have a piece of functional art that doesn’t let the size of the bathroom deter you from evoking a luxury spa-like sanctuary.

All Things Copper, Stand 725

Right round Freestanding baths are back on the international design scene but are far from space-efficient – hence the rise of Asian-style round soaking tubs. Designed to be compact, these baths allow homeowners to join the freestanding trend even in a bathroom with restrictive dimensions. Visually appealing, a round bath makes for an organic contrast to the straight lines of a standard bathroom. Typically deeper than they are wide, bathers sit upright cocooned by water and able to maneuver comfortably. All-around access makes them a practical choice for those with children, although steps should be considered for those who find it difficult to climb in and out of the tub unaided.

High tech Starting from the heated floor up you can already have advanced electronics in your privy in the form of motion sensing faucets, app-controlled LED lights, voice-activated temperature control, Bluetooth connectivity with your iPhone or MP3 player, televisions integrated into your vanity mirror and more. Don’t forget high-tech toilets with touchless flushing, remote control functionality, hygienic rimless bowls and a built-in UV self-cleansing bidet! This technology is designed to make your bathroom experience more convenient in every conceivable way, and will only get more prolific and affordable over time. Kohler Veil Intelligent Wall Faced Toilet, Stand 425

Auckland Home Show 2019 19

A small space shouldn’t mean you can’t fit great design.

With these revolutionary St Michel Swing & Spin toilet vanities, St Michel makes every square centimetre count. This ingenious design has a curved gloss basin to maximise hand-washing space, but it’s still slim enough to tuck into the tightest corner of your smallest room. For all–in-one convenience, the cabinet cavity accommodates either a hand towel hook or a toilet roll.

Floating Style

Modern, functional bathroom furniture has never looked this good with the London Vanity from St Michel. Delivering a perfect blend of modern and traditional elements, the all-new London Bathroom Furniture Collection is New Zealand-designed and made. A realistic render of a home building project

Love Me Render

3d rendering is the latest tool in an architect’s arsenal when creating innovate design solutions.

Whether it be a dream project to persuade investors, images of your extension to show your neighbour, or a council requirement helping you to communicate your design, 3d renders can make all the difference, showing realistic computergenerated images and animations of the project in brilliant detail - from every angle. Darren Paddock and his team at 3dfactory have been growing their business, working mainly on high end residential renovations and 3d visuals for

investors and developments, with a couple of small interior extensions to fill in the gaps. The way it works is that architects supply the plans and Darren’s team does the rest, creating anything from simple 3d images, through to animated walk-thoughs and fly-overs. Darren says the best part of an architectural design project is the interaction with clients and discovering how they operate in the space. “I’m fascinated with how people live, and endeavour to help design beautiful and functional spaces to suit the everyday needs of the users,” he says. Cedar Spectacular Cedar is making a comeback as people turn their backs on monolithic cladding and look to real timber for cladding and features.

with Ryan Bickley 360PMCC

What’s the first question you ask when addressing a new project? We like to ask our clients things like, how they feel about the house (long term family home/ renovating to sell), what their intentions are with the spaces they are renovating, and if they have considered the future or long term outcomes for the proposed project. What’s more important, price, speed or quality when planning a project? Quality is always number one. We pride ourselves on the quality of workmanship delivered. At the end of the day, and in many years to come, we want to be able to stand back proudly and say, ‘We built that’. Moreover, we aim to establish a great working relationship with our clients that will see

Major developments like Hobsonville Point are full of cedar homes using cedar to create a modern aesthetic, and there are several cedar-clad homes listed as finalists for the Home of the Year Awards. We asked Mark Ralph of TimberTech to tell us the ins and outs of this amazing building timber: Cedar is a superior insulator, great at absorbing sound and infused with natural insecticides to ward off nasties. Staining can also be used to create a traditional or thoroughly modern look.

Colours: mimic untreated cedar with Kauri Gum, go modern with grey Flint or black Foundry, or opt for trendy silver Pioneer. To protect your home and to keep it looking beautiful year-round, cedar should be treated at least once every two years. To understand if your cedar needs maintenance, look for the tell-tale signs of cedar going dull, patchy colour developing, silvering, mould, mildew, cupping, or cracking. See cedar at Timbertech, Stand 758

them utilising us for their future projects. We hear stories about how hard it can be to doit-yourself with the current permitting regime? What’s your advice to a DIY warrior. One of the biggest hurdles faced by DIY renovators is dealing with the consent process. The building industry has been under immense pressure in the last 20 years due to some building methods failing. This, in turn, placed pressure on councils to ensure that planned work being consented would meet the new (more stringent) tests to allow a consent to be issued. Some might argue that the consent process has been taken a step too far, however, it does also remain that there is a direct responsibility placed on the council to ensure all practices carried out

will meet the requisites of the Building Code. My advice to the ambitious DIYers is to stick to projects that do not require consent, and projects that will not attract scrutiny from prospective purchasers if you decide to sell your property. What’s the one piece of advice you wish every renovator knew before they started? Always ask the question, what lies beneath? Before you go ripping that wall down or pulling that window out, ensure that you have thoroughly investigated everything you can around what you are about to do. Having reno botch-ups rectified is very costly and in most situations will set you back more than if you had a professional do it in the first place.

A home you can run from your phone Technical innovation has been moving at an incredible speed over the last 25 years. Entire generations never knew ‘landline phones’ or even the concept of a physical map. With cloud computing, always-on internet and simple advanced technology for sensors and devices, we are starting to see the beginnings of the next generation of smart homes emerge. The Smart Home IoT ecosystem Today we are only at the beginning of the Smart Home generation. The end state is going to be a home that is customized to you and your family. The home of the future will sense when you are home, which room you are in and anticipate what activity you will be doing. You will not be managing your Smart Home, it will be managing you. Home security for the connected home A basic security system today has motion sensors in rooms and cameras strategically placed outside, along with a siren. But the Smart Home adds a smart lock that will track who enters the house, with

personalised user codes or shared through the App - that means no more key under the doormat! Ideal for guests or Airbnb. Lighting and environment control Lighting control is an easy demonstration of your ‘smart’ home, but it can be a huge energy saver. Add your lights into your IoT ecosystem, for example, and have them switch on as the garage door is activated, so you can see when you get out of your car. Easy to use entertainment, media and home theatre As the range of viewing options has increased these can come along with a dauntingly

complex set of actions to switch between TV inputs. With aesthetically recessed speakers and hidden equipment, your lounge still looks like your lounge, until you press an app on your phone and see it transform… Power usage, heating and cooling Solar, energy storage and variable rate pricing open up new opportunities for smart home technology to help save energy and reduce costs. Rather than exporting electricity back to the grid for a low return, you can detect when the house is generating an excess and use it to cool or heat the house, or to run other large electrical loads. Minimising peak energy

usage not only saves cost, it is good for the environment. Smartlife and the Open IoT Ecosystem The challenge for the smart home industry today is how to allow all your devices to interconnect within the same ecosystem. As always in these large domains you will find multiple systems that try to push you towards one manufacturer, protocol or service, but a Smartlife hub manages a wide range of protocols and accepts many offthe-shelf devices. SmartLife can make sense of the connected home. See SmartLife on Stand 283.

Cololight is the 2019 CES Innovation Award winning product. Cololight pieces can be spliced together to create various shapes and amazing lighting effects. Use voice control via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant to change the colour of the light, or alternatively, use the touch sensor on the device or simply leave it on

a smart mode where colours will change along with music – with 16 million colours to choose from. Mood lighting, party lighting, romantic lighting, all possible with Cololight. See the Cololight at Lava Solutions, Stand 1036

Smart care for loved ones

Intelligent devices are more than fancy gadgets; for the elderly, they also offer the promise of freedom. Advances in home automation products are making it easier to feel safer in our homes, automate routine tasks, and help us gain insight into our behaviour. Security devices like sensored door locks and streaming cameras mean that the young at heart can stay in their own homes longer. With a home automation system, you can even integrate cameras or motion sensors, so that caretakers or family members are quickly alerted if a door is left open, a window is accessed, or if there is movement in specific areas of the home. Meanwhile, environmental sensors, like carbon monoxide detectors and automated stoves can alert caretakers to potential hazards - even from afar. Voice Controlled Lighting is perfect for when your loved one can’t reach the switch after a fall. Or for example, the home can notify you if your loved one leaves a door unlocked between certain hours. Heating and cooling can automatically respond to the weather conditions outside, security lighting can also activate when the sun sets or at specific times of the evening, so they

don’t have to worry about remembering to turn it on every night. And if your loved one has hearing problems, program the lights to blink when someone rings the doorbell and a video intercom can show them who’s at the door, and more! It’s certainly looking like the future holds some promising developments, but in the meantime, there is a great opportunity to make your loved one’s life easier, safer, and more connected now. The nine flags of kitchen design Meticulous planning is the key to creating a new kitchen that looks great and functions efficiently. John van Doormaal from Innovative Kitchens has learned a thing or two about kitchen design during his more than 30 years in the business. He shares his top tips for creating a super-successful new kitchen:

FRIDGES They’re big and sometimes ugly and they’re an important centrepiece for your kitchen design! Decide whether to show, or hide the doors and whether you want just a fridge and freezer, or added features like cool drawer, blast freezer, chilled water and more!

FREESTANDING STOVE Once every home had one and then the fashion moved to separate hob and oven… but now, incredible contemporary freestanding stoves are back and they’re awesome.

HOB Unlike a freestanding stove, a hob can be put almost anywhere in the kitchen. Make sure you position it where it is safest and most accessible.

RANGE HOOD You’ve got to have good ventilation in a kitchen nowadays, especially with a gas cooker… But range hoods can be noisy and they need to be ducted. Consider the options before you plan your hob placement!

Keep it Hidden Keep the clutter off the benchtops and hide the small appliances for a serene kitchen workspace. Box shelving system from Blum – Jones Family Business, Stand 460

6 7 8

BENCHTOPS These days the sky is the limit! Stone, engineered stone, melamine… even wood! There are many surfaces ranging from cheap to extravagant. Make sure you choose a quality product for this very visual item.

SINK MOUNTING There’s more to a sink than meets the eye! Do you want it to sit ON the bench, be inset into it, or inserted underneath? Think before you buy!

SPLASHBACK This is a very visual item, but also important for protecting against fire or water. Consider whether you want tiles, coloured glass or even a picture of your favourite beach. Almost anything is possible!

Steel Yourself Slender steel frames make these kitchen chairs perfect for small dining spaces. From Design Denmark, Stand 460

Some kitchens these days have no visible handles at all. Do you want to see your handles or not, and if so, how will they be part of the overall effect of the kitchen?

LED LIGHTS It’s important to have good lighting on your workspace, but do you also want to throw a bit of colour on the subject? Colour your kitchen with an under-bench glow...

Big Business in Tiny Homes

What makes a Tiny Home? They’re usually characterised by clever use of space that delivers a one or two bedroom home in an incredibly small area. They’re always made with exceptional levels of insulation, they’re usually solar powered and they’re often on wheels to get around local body issues and permits. Whether this movement is driven by economic reasons – due to high cost of building or renting – or whether it’s a desire to go off-grid, the Tiny House is now being seen as a viable housing option.

Tiny Steps When Build Tiny first came to the Auckland Home Show two years ago, their cleverly designed house was a hit and they’ve never looked back. “We’ve been busy over the last two years building many custom tiny homes, in fact, we’ve never built two the same!” says Gina Stevens. “We pride ourselves on this fact, making sure that every client has something truly unique to suit their needs,” Gina says. “We no longer have ‘models’ to pick from, we’ve morphed into a bespoke building company, and our core team of three has grown into a team of nine. The “Kingfisher Tiny House” they’re bringing to the show is an actual home built in their Katikati workshop for a client who’ll take possession of the home for the first time the Monday following the show. It’s fully off grid, has two sleeping lofts (one that you can walk into rather than crawling) and with the addition of a pull-out sofa, it could actually accommodate up to six people! “We’ve learned a lot about building tiny homes since the last show,” says Gina. “Notable changes are the light weight construction materials we use, and the trailers we build on. We also use a new innovative detachable trailer, so you can actually jack the house up and pull the trailer out for maintenance.” The Build Tiny team are becoming accidental internet stars with a massive online following. “Every time we complete a build, we film a video tour to show off all the features. They usually have a reach of around 50,000-200,000 views each, but one with a net loft had unprecedented viral success with more than 13 million views!” Build Tiny now has 21 homes installed on properties in Auckland, Coromandel, Hawkes Bay, Tauranga, Katikati, Wellington, Motueka, and Dunedin and have many more builds on the schedule for the remainder of the year. See Build Tiny in The Street.

Living the Ecopod Life Steve Brackebush of Ecopod Concepts started making pods after an O.E. showed him the incredible potential of new building techniques from around the world. Learning to build log homes in Canada, it sparked his passion for building cabins. And later, in Europe he discovered alternative building techniques and developed an appreciation for high quality work that doesn’t cost the earth. Then, back in NZ, some friends asked Steve if he could create a cabin for them. “I recognised that there was a real need in the market for good quality, well-designed relocatable buildings, so I decided to address the demand by setting up Eco Pod Concepts,” says Steve. “I now have a team of experienced, qualified builders and support staff who have helped make this dream a reality. What is the most important thing to get right about pods? “Bringing down construction costs and building smarter is key, with factors such as all-weather building, economies of scale and sub-contractors coming to a central location, all contributing to cost savings.” “We are also focused on the aesthetic and are passionate about good design. We want them to fulfill the needs of our clients, look amazing and be just as functional. “I think we will definitely see people downsizing their living spaces, as people enjoy independence and free themselves from large mortgages, as the cost of land and building continues to rise. I’d like to see more timber construction as it’s versatile, beautiful and more sustainable than many other materials. EcoPod is offering the chance to win a weekend for two at Woodside Bay on Waiheke for people who sign up at the show. See Ecopod on Outdoor Site 15.

EcoSpace Matters Gavin Barr of Ecospace has always had a strong drive to follow his intuition and create off grid solution housing and minor dwellings since his apprentice days. “The housing market we are participating in is becoming more and more financially inaccessible for those who need it most,” says Gavin. “Buying a home in today’s market can cost in the ballpark of 6-8 times a household income, not to mention the ecologically-unsustainable practices of the construction industry, and the increasing amount of pressure that society is placing on the environment. “We love construction, and we are truly passionate about providing an adequate solution to the current issues faced by many Kiwis in today’s housing climate.” Gavin says that no two people are the same, and so listening and accommodating people’s specific needs is the ethos behind all of their projects. Ecospace offers a range of different units, from a 10m2 ‘Granny Flat’ to a 21m2 Tiny House with mezzanine bedroom upstairs. All are customisable to suit our client’s needs and wants. So, what are the key principles to making a successful tiny home? “Efficient and practical use of space is a key principle that needs to be considered throughout the design and construction process of any good tiny home. However, we believe it is just as important that potential tiny home owners are committed to the positive lifestyle change that tiny homes have to offer. Each stage of the building process is undertaken with sustainability in mind. Units are architecturally designed by Eco Habitats - specialists in eco-friendly architecture and they have done away with traditional timber and steel stud applications for the primary structure of the units. Instead, they use Formance SIPs, an environmentally friendly product with superior durability, maximum warmth, and energy efficiency of the building envelope. “We live in a society today that is hell-bent on filling every bit of space that we have, without considering the negative impact it has on us and the environment that we live in. Studies show that the average floor area for New Zealand houses doubled in size between 1974 and 2011, whilst occupancy inside those houses reduced. To put it simply, larger houses are being built to house fewer people. The impact that this has on the environment is well documented; from energy use to waste created in the construction and maintenance of larger homes. “Switching to a tiny home involves a conscious decision to simplify one’s lifestyle, and understanding that bigger is not always better,” Gavin says.
