On-Trend Kitchens

The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, and in New Zealand, this is reflected in the evolving design landscape for 2025 As winter draws to a close, several key trends are emerging - blending innovation, sustainability, and bold design choices that are set to define kitchens through spring and summer

Statement Colours & Layered Textures

While the classic all-white kitchen remains a timeless choice - as seen in our accompanying article featuring a white butler’s pantry - in 2025, New Zealanders are increasingly gravitating toward rich, earthy tones and layered textures Think deep greens, matte blacks, terracotta, and tactile surfaces like ribbed timber and handmade tiles. These elements bring warmth, depth, and personality to kitchens, especially when used in backsplashes, feature cabinetry, or even as contrast in a hidden pantry space. Sustainable, Local & Low-Waste Materials

INTERIORS –

What’sTrending

In 2025, interior design in New Zealand is evolving with a fresh blend of earthy sensibility, bold creativity, and a deepened commitment to sustainability. Kiwis are leaning into designs that reflect personality, place, and purpose Here’s what’s trending across Aotearoa homes this year:

Eco-Elevated Living

Sustainability remains central - but it’s more refined and design-driven than ever Think beyond recycled materials: homeowners are choosing locally sourced timbers, New Zealand wool textiles, natural plasters like clay or limewash, and energy-efficient systems designed for the local climate. Architectural salvage is booming, and repurposing vintage furniture is seen not only as eco-conscious but also as a way to inject soul and story into a space.

Soft Minimalism

Minimalism hasn’t disappeared - its just become warmer. “Soft minimalism” in 2025

is about clean lines softened by tactile materials: organic linens, rounded silhouettes, and a palette of sand, stone, and moss green. This calming aesthetic aligns with the need for homes to feel like sanctuaries.

Biophilic Boost

Connection to nature continues to shape interiors. Indoor gardens, living walls, and large native plants like nikau or kawakawa are being used to blur the line between indoors and out. Expect to see more natural stone, raw timber beams, and daylightmaximising layouts—even in compact city apartments.

Zellige Tiles Go Local

Zellige tiles are still trending, but with a Kiwi twist. Designers are pairing the handmade Moroccan texture with New Zealand clay tones—ochre, flax green, and deep ocean blues. Used in kitchens, bathrooms, and even fireplaces, the imperfect beauty of Zellige taps into our appreciation for authenticity and craftsmanship.

Painted Ceilings & Trim

The ceiling-as-a-statement is evolving This year, expect to see coloured trims, mouldings, and even interior doors painted

in rich hues—like forest green, navy, or terracotta—rather than entire ceilings. It’s a subtler way to bring depth and interest to a room while highlighting architectural features.

Earthy Reds & Sunset Tones

Red continues its rise, but in more muted, nature-inspired shades: burnt sienna, clay, paprika, and brick. These earthy tones feel grounded and comforting—perfect for living areas and bedrooms. They pair beautifully with native timber and natural fibres creating warmth without overpowering.

Statement Rugs, Not Floors

While bold flooring is still in play, in 2025 it’s rugs that are doing the talking. Largescale rugs in abstract or indigenous-inspired patterns are a key feature. There’s growing support for NZ-made or ethically sourced rugs, with a preference for wool and other natural fibres

Colour Zoning Over Drenching

Colour drenching has evolved into colour zoning—using different hues to define areas within open-plan homes. Think a sage green reading nook, or a soft blush kitchen against a neutral living space. It’s an easy

way to create intimacy and visual flow in multifunctional spaces.

Heritage Reimagined

Heritage luxe has become more personal. Instead of full Art Deco or 70s glam throwbacks, Kiwis are curating vintagemodern hybrids—mixing heirlooms, retro finds, and new pieces that echo the past Materials like rimu, velvet, and glass are common, but it’s all about balance and storytelling, not themed interiors.

Tech-Integrated Serenity

With smart homes becoming more mainstream, there’s an increasing focus on discreet technology. Hidden speakers, smart lighting that mimics natural light cycles, and integrated climate controls are helping to make homes more comfortable and energyefficient—without disrupting the aesthetics

Interior trends in New Zealand for 2025 reflect a collective desire for balance: between old and new, natural and technological, calm and character. As Kiwis seek more sustainable, personal, and functional living spaces, design is moving toward authenticity - spaces that feel as good as they look.

Built on Experience. Driven by Vision.

With nearly 50 years of business, Homeworld Design & Build is one of Northland’s most trusted and respected residential building companies Proudly family-owned, the team is known for their personalised approach, quality workmanship, and ability to bring ideas to life whether it’s a new build, a premium addition, or a complex site If you’re thinking about your next project, come and have a friendly chat it all starts with a conversation.

Homeworld has been building in Northland since 1976 what’s the story behind the company, and what values have carried through the decades?

Homeworld was started back in 1976 with a simple goal to provide affordable, quality homes for the local community Nearly five decades later, our values remain the same do it properly, be upfront and honest, and stand by your work. It’s never been about being the biggest it’s about doing right by the people who trust us with one of their biggest investments.

What does it mean to be one of the few remaining family-owned building companies in the region how does that shape the experience for your clients?

Being family-owned means our name is on every project and we don’t take that lightly. It’s personal Our clients aren’t just numbers in a system; they’re real people with dreams, challenges, and expectations We take the time to build strong relationships, and many clients stay connected long after the project is finished That sense of care and accountability is what defines us

What can clients expect from your fullservice design and build process? How do you guide them from the first idea to the final handover?

Our process is designed to take the stress out of building. It starts with a conversation understanding your lifestyle, your vision and your goals. We can work with your preferred designer, recommend trusted architectural partners, or guide you through our extensive range of predesigned plans. From cost estimates through to interior styling and project management, our experienced team keeps the journey organised, transparent and enjoyable

Not all builders want to take on a tricky site what makes Homeworld well-suited to challenging builds like steep sections or coastal blocks?

Challenging sites are where we shine. We’ve built on steep slopes, clifftops, and tight urban sections. With an in-house team of experienced professionals, we problem-solve early and work confidently with councils engineers and geotech specialists. We’re not afraid of a challenge we thrive on it

We hear you also offer premium additions what inspired that direction, and what kind of projects do you take on?

Some homeowners are choosing to stay put and improve what they already have. We had clients asking us for help they loved their location but needed more space. That’s where the idea of offering premium additions came from. These aren’t quick patch jobs; we take the same thoughtful, architectural approach we apply to new builds. Whether it’s adding a guest wing, a home office or a garage with a studio above, we ensure the new space enhances both the functionality and style of the home.

What makes a Homeworld additions different from a standard renovation?

A typical renovation often focuses on fixing or updating what’s already there.

What we offer is more strategic and designled. We look at how an extension can improve your home’s layout, future-proof

your lifestyle, and add long-term value. We don’t just tack on a room we integrate the extension seamlessly with the existing home, both aesthetically and structurally. It’s about quality, longevity, and making sure the end result feels like it’s always belonged.

If someone is unsure whether to renovate, extend, or build new how can Homeworld help them make the best decision for their lifestyle and budget?

The first step is always a conversation We take the time to understand your goals, what’s working (and not working) in your current home, and what your budget can realistically achieve. Because we do both new builds and additions, we can give honest, unbiased advice on which path is better for you whether it’s a smart upgrade, a transformative addition, or starting fresh with a brand-new build. Either way, you’ll get a clear plan, a transparent process, and a team that’s genuinely invested in helping you make the right choice.

What’s a butler’s pantry?

Abutler’s pantry can be a fantastic addition to any home, offering a range of benefits that enhance both functionality and aesthetics. Here are some of the key advantages:

Enhanced organization

A butler’s pantry provides additional storage space, helping to keep your kitchen clutter-free. With extra cabinets, shelves, and countertops, you can store items that might otherwise take up valuable space in your main kitchen. This includes fine china, glassware, serving dishes, and small appliances. By having a designated area for these items, you can maintain a more organized and efficient kitchen

Improved entertaining

One of the primary benefits of a butler’s pantry is its utility for entertaining. It serves as a staging area where you can prepare and plate food, mix drinks, and store serving ware. This allows you to keep the main kitchen clean and presentable while hosting guests. Additionally, a butler’s pantry can be equipped with a sink, dishwasher, and even a small refrigerator, making it easier to manage food and drink preparation and cleanup without disrupting the flow of your event.

Increased home value

Adding a butler’s pantry can increase the value of your home. This feature is often seen as a luxury addition, appealing to potential buyers who appreciate the extra space and functionality. A welldesigned butler’s pantry can make your home stand out in the real estate market, potentially leading to a higher resale value.

Versatility

A butler’s pantry is a versatile space that can be customized to meet your specific needs Whether you use it as a secondary kitchen, a bar area, or a storage space, it can be tailored to fit your lifestyle.

For example, if you enjoy baking, you can equip your butler’s pantry with specialized tools and appliances. If you frequently host dinner parties, you can use it to store and organize your entertaining essentials.

Aesthetic appeal

A butler’s pantry can enhance the overall aesthetic of your home. With thoughtful design and highquality finishes, it can serve as a stylish extension of your kitchen and dining areas. You can choose materials and colours that complement your existing decor, creating a cohesive and visually appealing space. The addition of decorative elements, such as glassfront cabinets or a tiled backsplash, can further elevate the look of your butler’s pantry.

Convenience

Having a butler’s pantry adds convenience to your daily routine. It provides a dedicated space for meal prep, making it easier to manage cooking tasks without crowding your main kitchen.

Additionally, a butler’s pantry can serve as a convenient spot for storing and accessing frequently used items, reducing the need to constantly move between different areas of your kitchen.

This can be especially beneficial during busy times, such as holidays or family gatherings, when you need extra space to prepare and serve food.

Turning Housing Visions into Reality

How Cato Bolam helps Northland projects succeed – from concept to completion

Every great housing project starts with a vision That vision must navigate challenges – from local planning rules to designing homes that work with the site, fit the budget, meet market demand, and stand the test of time.

In Northland, our in-house experts bring deep economic insight into the development and build process. We combine smart design with the coordinated planning of every aspect of development to anticipate challenges, solve problems, and transform visions into quality housing outcomes.

One of the essential first questions is:

What can I do with my site?

Knowing what’s possible from the start sets the tone for the whole project –and can mean the difference between progressing with a viable project or avoiding costly mistakes

These two projects show what’s possible when the right team is behind a housing vision in Northland.

Partnership in Action – Ngāti Hine Health Trust’s Social Housing

When Ngāti Hine engaged Cato Bolam to lead their Moerewa social housing development on Ranfurly Street, the brief was clear: create quality housing for the community that will last generations.

We provided architectural, planning, engineering, and surveying expertise to create a development that blends medium-density living with a thoughtful, locally responsive design. The project delivers a well-planned neighbourhood

of 35 homes – from single-storey three and four-bedroom houses to two-storey two-bedroom terraces – alongside a community centre and outreach clinic.

Ngāti Hine offered the whakataukī ‘Ngāti Hine Pukepuke Rau’ – “Ngāti Hine of a hundred hills; each hill has its own chief.” This proverb inspired the housing forms, which echo the undulating lines of the surrounding hills. Durable materials and smart engineering were incorporated to

ensure these homes will continue to serve the community well into the future. By working closely from the outset, we aligned the design with Ngāti Hine’s principles and delivered the project on time, on budget, and with lasting community benefit

Quality Outcomes – 447 Kamo Road, Whangārei

This smart, medium-density development at 1–2/447 Kamo Road makes the most of its site, meeting market demand while enhancing the neighbourhood.

Argento Ltd engaged Cato Bolam to provide planning, surveying, engineering, and environmental solutions for the transformation of a single-home property into seven quality dwellings – a carefully balanced mix of detached and terraced homes, each with its own freehold title. The result is a design that focuses on functionality, privacy and amenity, with well-landscaped outdoor spaces and architectural variety that enhances local housing choice and supports Whangārei’s future growth.

What’s Possible on Your Site?

Every successful development begins with understanding your site’s potential. That’s why Cato Bolam offers free feasibility assessments – giving you a clear picture of what’s possible on your site, potential yield, and design options before you commit (terms and conditions apply). This step is essential due diligence, helping you avoid costly surprises and make confident decisions

With offices in Whangārei and Mangawhai, we combine local knowledge with multidisciplinary expertise to help our clients achieve their goals and add lasting value to Northland’s communities.

BATHROOM BLISS: Design, Plan, and Transform

There can be no doubt that renovating a bathroom is a major undertaking. It requires thorough planning, plenty of research, and coordination between various trades. Many people choose to bring in professionals to help with the design and build process, often relying on them to manage the project from start to finish - a wise move given the logistics involved

Today, many designers offer 3D visualisation services to help you envision your new bathroom. There are also a number of online 3D planning tools available, allowing you to map out room dimensions, fixture placements, and more. These tools can be a valuable asset during the early planning stages

It’s important to remember that a bathroom must be both functional and visually appealing. Taking into account the specific needs of your household is crucial.

Bathroom (and kitchen) renovations can be costly, so it’s wise to establish a clear budget early on to keep spending under control.

There are many components to consider - flooring, wall finishes, showers, baths, vanities, sinks, tapware, lighting, heating, and ventilation The good news is that the popularity of bathroom renovations has led to an incredible variety of options at a wide range of price points.

• Freestanding baths – a strong focal point that adds a touch of luxury

• Wall-hung vanities – particularly with natural timber finishes

• Circular or oval mirrors – often with integrated LED backlighting

• Rainforest-style showerheads – offering a spa-like experience

• Raised vanity basins (vessel sinks)

continuing to be a popular choice

• Double sink vanities

ideal for shared bathrooms

• Soft gold, brushed brass, and gunmetal finishes – stylish choices for tapware and accessories

• Rimless toilets – for easy cleaning and a sleek look

• Wall-hung toilets – space-saving and modern

Cosy Cushions

Soft furnishings can easily transform a room from bland to extraordinary.

Cushions, rugs, throws, chair covers, bedding and pillows are all examples that can be practical, comfortable and decorative.

With the ongoing trend for neutral interiors dressing up a room with soft furnishings and adding a splash of colour, is almost a necessity. But there are signs that this trend is on the way out with colour making a comeback. It’s possible to brighten up a room by experimenting with colour and texture and all without breaking the bank.

Sustainability is a consideration these days and we’re seeing natural materials coming to the fore which might be explained by the need for people to feel more grounded. Look out for colour palettes including beige, olive green and other colours related to nature.

There’s a huge range of scatter cushions available at all price points. It needn’t cost a fortune to give your lounge or bedrooms a makeover every now and then.

Available as squares, circular or rectangular the choice of fabric, pattern and texture is almost overwhelming Trending right now are natural, earthy colours and textures along with plenty of imitation fur -perfect for snuggling down on a cold winters day.

Floor cushions and rugs are seeing a revival too with a huge choice available from Turkish rugs to hand knotted and plenty of options to be right up to date with colours for kids, geometrics and neutrals.

A throw is basically a small, decorative blanket that can be draped over a sofa or chair and doubles as a blanket if needed. Hugely popular, they are often fringed, rather than hemmed and could be considered as essential to many who like to be on trend with their interior decoration.

They are particularly useful in winter as they can be used as snuggle blankets

Bedrooms are receiving much more attention these days and there’s plenty to enhance the décor be it masculine, feminine or for the children. Bedding, duvets and duvet covers, pillows, and cushions can transform a functional room into a comfortable haven.

There’s a huge range of duvets to choose

from- summer weight, winter weight, synthetic, and natural wool. Duvet cover sets can quickly ring the changes and add a whole new dimension to a bedroom too.

Having favourite pieces of furniture, such as lounge suites, re-upholstered rather than throwing out and buying new is another option.

Choosing Colour for Warmth & Harmony in Your Home

Colour isn’t just decoration – it’s mood, atmosphere, and personality all rolled into one. The right palette can make a room feel bigger, brighter, and more inviting, while the wrong choice can leave it feeling cold or disconnected

Current Colour Trends

2025 is all about warmth and connection. We’re seeing a shift toward:

• Soft earth tones warm beiges, caramel, and clay for a grounded, timeless feel

• Dusky pinks & terracottas adding a touch of romance and comfort

• Rich greens & deep blues inspired by nature, bringing calm and balance

• Warm whites & creamy neutrals for a light, fresh backdrop that still feels cosy

Tips for Choosing the Right Colour

1. Start with the feeling you want –Do you want your living room to feel lively and energising, or calm and restful?

2. Consider natural light – Warm tones work beautifully in south-facing rooms, while cooler tones can balance bright, sunny spaces.

3. Layer your palette – Mix a main wall colour with complementary trim, soft furnishings, and textures for depth.

4. Bring the outside in – Draw inspiration from your surroundings –coastal blues, lush greens, or earthy rural hues.

At McNabb Decorating, we don’t just paint walls – we help you design a space that feels like home. Our colour consultants work with you to select shades that suit your style, lighting, and lifestyle.
