Facilitating rehabilitation T he Stewart Centre @ EIT provides rehabilitation for people who have had a brain injury. The service holds contracts with government agencies including ACC and the Ministry of Health. The Stewart Centre @ EIT operates Mondays to Fridays. People who are referred to the Stewart Centre @ EIT come with their own individual needs and as staff we see our role as facilitating their rehabilitation journey by providing opportunities and structure to ensure successful outcomes. We provide a weekly programme of group activities that are meaningful and purposeful and which are seen as a vehicle to enable rehabilitation. Programmes have been established as a result of initiatives from clients, wha¯ nau, family members and therapists, as well as staff seeing a need and responding to opportunities.

the importance of Co enzyme Q10
C
oQ10 is a vitamin-like compound that plays critical roles in our body. Our heart, nerves, brain and muscles have very CoQ10 demand because they have the greatest energy requirements. CoQ10 has 2 main functions: • It is essential to make the energy needed by our cells. Our cell engines called mitochondria change food energy into the energy we need to live. CoQ10 plays a vital role in moving hydrogen to make our energy. This is much like the fuel hose in your car bringing the fuel to the engine. • The ability to carry electrons means that CoQ10 can also act as an antioxidant protecting cholesterol from inflaming and damaging blood vessels. Low CoQ10 can be caused by disease, age and commonly used medications especially cholesterol-lowering medicines. Reduced CoQ10 is often felt as weak and aching

are your veins bothering you? A question I’m frequently asked is how do you know when you should have your veins treated. Well if they are bothering you, in any way, then it makes sense to have a vein assessment, including an ultrasound scan, to identify the degree of the problem.
For some patients the appearance of their legs is the issue i.e. the concern is a cosmetic one. Doctors have a tendency to underestimate the importance of patient’s cosmetic concerns and won’t tend to discuss things unless you initiate the conversation. So if you want better looking legs ask your doctor for a referral or seek out a vein clinic that will provide a sympathetic ear. There is no need to be embarrassed by varicose or spider veins every summer when you want to wear your shorts or swimming togs.
For other patients the symptoms of varicose veins may become a nuisance. Symptoms such as: ache, throb or heavy, restless legs especially after a long day at work in standing occupations. Other classic symptoms are itch and varicose eczema, swelling of the feet and ankles, pigmentation and skin texture changes of the lower leg. Ultimately the skin can deteriorate sufficiently that varicose ulceration develops. This is a serious complication that should definitely provoke an assessment and preferably treatment of the varicose veins to allow the ulcer to heal. Obviously then if you are getting troubling symptoms from your varicose veins don’t wait for an ulcer, get a vein assessment, including an ultrasound scan and treat the problem appropriately. Treatments these days are office based and much more affordable
and simple than they used to be. Surgical stripping is no longer necessary to fix varicose veins and the non-surgical techniques provide faster recovery and greater economy for the patient.
Modern non-surgical techniques are less invasive and have minimal downtime. Procedures take 30 to 90 minutes in the doctor’s office followed by a 30 minute walk and then it’s back to your regular duties. The procedures are pain free once the local anaesthetic takes effect. The patient is required to wear compression stockings for 2 weeks following the procedure and walk at least 30 minutes daily. Very straightforward!
only realistic option for treatment. Fortunately many of the vein doctors (Phlebologists) are covered by medical insurance and some are Southern Cross Health Society “Affiliated Providers”. Amino Acids along with stimulation. Over the 56 years they have been operating in New Zealand, they have found it to be most successful with no detrimental side effects like other prescription drugs therapies.
Hair loss affects many men and women in New Zealand. Whether it’s caused by a genetic predisposition to thinning, hormonal changes (including menopause), general stress, imbalances of nutrients available to the hair roots, scalp disorders or tension of the skin crownal area, it is clear that the earlier that treatment is started, the better the results.
After a consultation with a qualified Clive Trichologist (specialist in hair and scalp disorders), clients are recommended a treatment programme that works on fighting both the genetic and external factors that are likely to be causing hair loss and baldness, as well as helping stimulate hair growth and improve the circulation to the affected area.

We have a unique set up that allows our students to have a supportive inclusive education between our Base School and 9 satellite classes in local mainstream schools. This allows our students to progress through our school pathway (primary, intermediate, secondary and tertiary) according to their age and ability. Our teachers and specialist team offer our students a holistic education with a focus on the New Zealand Curriculum as well as supporting students to increase their independence.

Living the best life possible
