olidays overseas are still off the agenda and many families are choosing to stay close to home this year what with the current uncertain conditions. However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing as it gives people a chance to take a well-deserved treat and explore their own backyard. Here are a few, slightly indulgent options to consider.

Although only a short drive from Hastings the beachfront settlements of Haumoana and Te Aw wanga offer a relaxed lifestyle by the sea. Both are popular fishing and surfing destinations.

In Central Hawke’s Bay there are some magnificent beaches to enjoy but the trip there could be an hour or more. Enjoy Kairakau Beach, Mangakuri with its sandy beach and rocky shore or Pourere Beach where you can fish, swim, surf and launch boats from the beach.

Aramoana Beach, Blackhead Beach with its Te Angiangi Marine Reserve and Porangahau Beach, which has fishing events during summer are all popular destinations.

awke’s Bay is blessed with a large selection of beaches stretching from the Mahia Peninsula in the north to Porangahau in the south.

Those famiiliar wiith New Zealland d coastal conditions know to check whether the beach they plan to visit is safe to swim and families might like to see if the beach is patrolled by a surf lifesaving club.

There are several beaches that are patrolled during the summer months including Westshore, Ocean Beach and Waimarama Beach.

Ocean Beach, a small community on the east coast, is a golden sand beach with many baches and holiday homes. It’s a y isolated sp pot with no shop ps but it is fairly very popular. There’s a strong rip current that attracts surfers.

Further south is popular Waimarama Beach with its long, sandy beach and views to Bare Island (Motuokura). This is undoubtedly the most popular beach in summer as people can swim, surf and enjoy a picnic in a shady park.

Pekapeka Wetlands

Ōtātara Pā Historic Reserve

The wetlands cover 98 ha, mostly now owned by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council but some portions on private land. It is a remnant of a former extensive wetland system covering the majority of the Pekapeka is one of the few remaining large, inland wetlands in Hawke’s Bay. Pekapeka is the second highest ranking wetland in the Department of Conservation (Hawke’s Bay) Heretaunga Ecological District. A restoration project since the 1990’s (led

by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and with community support) aimed to improve the wetland’s capacity to regulate flood waters and increase the natural biodiversity. Some dead willow trunks are evidence of the huge clearance of willows that was needed to reopen the wetland.

Ōtātara Pā Historic Reserve encompasses one of the largest pā complexes in New Zealand.

The pā spans an upper pā (Hikurangi) and a lower pā (Ōtātara). Visitors to the pā can see the remains of te erraces, dwelling sites and food storage pits and imagine the lively community that Ōtāttara once was.

The pā complex covers over 40 hectares and is one of the largest and oldest in Hawke’s Bay. It was favoured for its strategic location, providing expansive views and access to a range of natural resources. This meant it was regarded by many iwi as the greatest pā in the dis strict and ownership was strongly contested at times.

Tangoio Falls and Scenic Reserve tracks State Highway 2, 25 km north of Napier.

Discover Te Ana or Tangoio Falls on a short, easy walk suitable for kids, or take a longer walk through native bush on the Tangoio Walkway. There’s a large signposted car park and picnic tables. Dogs are prohibited. Tangoio Walkway can be accessed from the picnic / parking areas at either the southern end of Tangoio Falls Scenic Reserve or opposite White Pine Bush Scenic Reserve.

The walkway passes through native forest, open grassland and pine plantations, redwoods and other species. The track is steep in places and a stream crossing requires care after rain.

ake the first splash of summer fun in a region where the locals will tell you it’s an endless summer. From the land of the first light, kia ora, welcome. We invite you to discover our unique corner of Aotearoa – New Zealand. Tairāwhiti Gisborne is rich in history, culture, cuisine and adventure. Tairāwhiti means “the coast upon which the sun shines across the water”. Which is apt since we are the first in the world to see the sun. Also commonly called East Coast, Eastland, the Tairāwhiti region extends from east of Ōpōtiki in the north to the Mohaka River in the south. What lies between is an almost untouched paradise of spectacular surf beaches, inland wilderness, fertile vineyards and farms, marae and settlements, gorgeous lakes and rivers.

Tairāwhiti is a region of many firsts.

In addition to welcoming the sun, Gisborne saw some of the first Māori to land after their epic Pacific navigations in the fourteenth century. Their many descend dantts now mak ke up allmostt hallf off the region – an authentic expression of what it means to be a bicultural nation. It’s also where, in 1769, James Cook anchored his ship Endeavour and came ashore for the first meeting on land between Māori and Pākeha. The beginnings of our modern nation truly started here.

TAI AIRA IRĀWH A HITI MUSEUM

The exhibition Tū te Whaihanga: a recognition of creative genius, has now been extended until May 2022.

T

ū te Whaihanga displays treasured Māori artefacts s that left Aotearoa New Zealand 252 years ago on HMS Endeavour. The ey returned home to Tairāwhiti in Octob ber 2019, on the 250th anniversary off the first onshore encounters between n the crew of the Endeavour and tanga ata whenua in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa Gisborne.

The collection of taonga are on loan from five museums in England and one in Germany. They inc clude eight painted hoe paddles, rākau (weapons), kākahu (cloaks), tātua (belts s), whakairo (carvings) and adornments.

Museum Directorr Eloise Wallace says that there have been n plenty of visitors

over the year and for many seeing the exhibition has been quite an emotional experience. “People are really amazed to be able to see the creativity and ingenuity of taonga that were crafted over 250 years ago.”

The development of Tū te Whaihanga was led by Hei Kanohi Ora Governance Group which comprises of Tūranganui-aKiwa mana whenua and Te Aitanga a Hauiti and was developed in partnership with Tairāwhiti Museum.

The exhibition runs until May 2022.

Entry to local residents and children 12 and under is free.

For others there is a $5 entry fee.
