WATER MATTERS

T

here’s much debate and discontent surrounding water issues as pressure increases on farmers and horticulturists to work towards water conservation and improve the quality of waterways through stock exclusion, riparian planting and other protection measures.

If the Water Conservation Order (WCO) comes into effect restrictions or prohibitions will be put in place on how water from the Ngaruroro and Clive River can be used, which could result in a vast number of jobs being lost. Nearly 400 submissions were received on the application and were a close split between opponents and supporters.

Opponents had been vocal in condemning the project, running a high-profile “No to WCO” campaign claiming the order would decimate primary production in Hawke’s Bay, and they held a tractor rally in Hastings at the end of last month to highlight their concerns.

A large number of submitters - including many from the horticulture sector opposed the WCO on the lower part of the Ngaruroro but supported or were neutral on it for the upper reaches.

The first stage of special tribunal hearings into the Ngaruroro River Water Conservation Order application will begin on November 14 after a decision to split the hearings into two - the first to consider matters relating to the upper reaches of the river.

With the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council voting to move on from the Ruataniwha Water Storage Scheme and focus its efforts on other priorities, water supply and storage issues are likely to dominate conversation and on-farm decisions in the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, new research indicates planting ma-nuka could reduce the impacts of farming on waterways, as well giving farmers an additional income stream.

In addition to the fertiliser applied to support pasture growth, animal urine can add nitrogen to soil at rates in excess of pasture’s ability to use it. Plant & Food Research scientists have contributed to a collaborative programme, led by University of Canterbury professor Brett Robinson which found that, after heavy application of urea, the soil around ma-nuka and ka-nuka trees contained dramatically less nitrate than around radiata pines used for comparison.

Farmers have previously used pine as a supplementary crop but log prices have decreased, while the markets for ma-nuka honey and essential oils have increased, making it another option for supplementary plantings. The potential to reduce nitrogen leachate and improve downstream water quality provides an additional benefit for planting or preserving ma-nuka.

How does your water taste?

In Hawke’s

Bay, when you turn on the tap, you would expect beautiful fresh artesian water to flow. For people dependent on local municipal supplies the water now tastes of Chlorine. The Havelock North water crisis has left a bitter taste in the mouths of many people and will change the way we think about water for many years to come. Poor water quality can be a problem and is just as common in rural water supplies.

As the human body is 60% water, we are rather dependent on H2O for good health, but water is also good at carrying soluble minerals, chemicals and other matter, such as the substances that contaminated the Havelock North water supply. One of the most effective means of protecting municipal supplies from bacterial contamination is to Chlorinate the water where a residual of disinfectant maintains some safety across a large network. The disadvantage ag being g that we are left with the taste of Chlorine orine and in some cases some reaction to this chemical in the water.

As not all water is created equal we use IANZ Accredited Laboratories to identify the contaminants in a supply and design the water treatment to suit your application; so when you turn on the tap, all you are getting is pure, clean water.

The water in our region most commonly comes from bores, rainwater or springs. The quality of the water from each varies widely. Bore water is generally safe in Hawkes Bay but the quality is variable, from being some of the best water available to issues of water hardness, staining and taste and odour. Springs in Hawkes Bay generally yield ‘hard water’ and can often be contaminated by ground water runoff.

When considering rainwater just look at which way the birds perch when sitting on your gutter. Rainwater is one of the best sources of pure water, but once it runs down your roof it becomes contaminated with bird excrement, yo rotting tree matter and any number of other hazards, ro such as lead on older roofs, however these issues are su easily addressed by appropriate water treatment. ea While water quality sounds like a murky subject, any Wh contamination in your water supply is easy to fix. Lime co can be removed from water with a softener, making it ca good for drinking, washing and gentler on your plumbing go and appliances. Water Softeners are very effective at not an only eliminating water hardness but also great at on removing Iron and Manganese the two elements that re most often cause staining in your house. Harmful mo elements such as heavy metals can often be removed from water with Reverse Osmosis using easily installed point of use systems.

E.coli is easily combatted with an ultra violet steriliser, which kills harmful bacteria with light, not nasty tasting chlorine and cysts easily filtered out with the correct filtration. And as for that chlorine, we have carbon filters to get rid of that too.
