Lockdown in 2020 was a time for Joanne Beswick to hunker down, sew and think about her future.

ewing has always been part and parcel of her life as her gran worked in a Hastings sewing factory for 42 years and her mother was also an avid sewer “Sewing is something I’ve always been around I remember when I was little cleaning nan ’ s industrial overlooker that was full of dust and lint ”

After lockdown she started a one-year diploma at EIT but enjoyed it so much she stayed on at the IDEA school studying fashion for another two years and graduated with a Bachelor in Creative Practice in 2023

Initially Joanne found it difﬁcult to decide on a particular direction at EIT but the more she learned about sustainability the more it made an impact We need to think about clothing sustainability and “textile waste is one of the major polluters in the world,” she says “The amount of textile waste is ridiculous ”

While preparing for her end of year collection at EIT Joanne, an avid op shopper, bought a groovy orange duvet cover for $30 and set about creating stunning outﬁts

Currently Joanne is manager of Basic Needs in Te Awanga, a café selling just that-basic needs Within the store is a rack with Joanne’s garments for sale Her brand is called Bobby Jo and currently Joanne is something of an expert at repurposing tablecloths
