From apprentices to executive stylists, a lot has changed over the past 13 years - and some things haven’t. • Unique will be heading to Auckland in May for a one-day cutting course run by Clip Joint (Vidal Sassoon training)—we can’t wait to see what she brings back!

• Tash is off to Auckland in April for a Pivot Point 3-day cutting seminar-it’s a huge opportunity as they’re only offering this to eight trainers nationwide! This will be a great refresh on the fundamentals and a chance to upskill the whole team.

DNA Lockdown in 2020 was a time for Joanne Beswick to hunker down, sew and think about her future.

ewing has always been part and parcel of her life as her gran worked in a Hastings sewing factory for 42 years and her mother was also an avid sewer. “Sewing is something I’ve always been around. I remember when I was little cleaning nan’s industrial overlooker that was full of dust and lint.”

After lockdown she started a one-year diploma at EIT but enjoyed it so much she stayed on at the IDEA school studying fashion for another two years and graduated with a Bachelor in Creative Practice in 2023.

Initially Joanne found it difficult to decide on a particular direction at EIT but the more she learned about sustainability the more it made an impact. We need to think about clothing sustainability and “textile waste is one of the major polluters in the world,” she says. “The amount of textile waste is ridiculous.”

While preparing for her end of year collection at EIT Joanne, an avid op shopper, bought a groovy orange duvet cover for $30 and set about creating stunning outfits.

Currently Joanne is manager of Basic Needs in Te Awanga, a café selling just that-basic needs. Within the store is a rack with Joanne’s garments for sale. Her brand is called Bobby Jo and currently Joanne is something of an expert at repurposing tablecloths.

Joanne used to be called Bubby Jo and then Bobby Jo and later Bob and that’s where the inspiration for the label comes from.

In fact, in line with her sustainability philosophy, Joanne creates garments, mainly tops, using beautiful old tablecloths she finds in op shops. Many are beautifully hand embroidered yet end up in op shops. “You can’t buy fabric like that these days or it’s expensive if you do.”

In addition to recycling tablecloths there’s another benefit in that she aims to keep prices reasonable. It’s difficult competing with global fast fashion brands like Shein or Temu and “you have to do something different.

With fashion you can’t guarantee sales and people just don’t have money to spend.”

Joanne likes to think about the stories the tablecloths have witnessed. “I like to imagine all the people who have sat around that table.”

Occasionally there will be a tablecloth with a stain that can’t be removed. Joanne is rather down to earth about this and points out that it’s a tablecloth and “it is what it is.”

Joanne does a lot of op shopping and raids her mums and grans cupboards and wardrobes. “I do love vintage fashion. Fashion

goes around in circles and always comes back,” she says. “These days you can wear anything and it’s fashionable.” Her collections for the end of year fashion show at EIT were definitely vintage inspired.

In addition to having a big collection of scarves Joanne has “a ridiculous fabric collection and she collects “a bit of vintage clothing.” She collects items you’d probably never throw out such as a beautiful woollen coat that she’ll keep forever.

She has two favourite jackets including an oversized denim jacket and a mustardcoloured coat that she bought years ago. It’s a wardrobe staple and will never go out of fashion.

Joanne works from home where she shares a garage that resembles a man shed. Here she has her sewing machine which came from the factory where her ran worked. Her overlocker was also passed down from gran.

While working at fashion full time isn’t possible right now, she hopes to be able to take up sewing full time and include an alteration service in the not-too-distant future. “I love sewing, it’s fun.” https://www.instagram.com/bobby_jo
