Explore our beautiful coastline

H

awke’s Bay boasts a stunning 360-kilometre stretch of coastline that offers an incredible variety of beaches, each with its own unique character. From wild surf spots to tranquil bays, these beaches are a major draw for locals and visitors alike. Ocean Beach is a vast sweep of golden sand backed by rolling dunes and open countryside. It’s a favourite among surfers thanks to its consistent waves, but it also appeals to walkers and families looking for a natural escape. Nearby, popular Waimārama Beach offers a more familyfriendly vibe with safe swimming zones, a small coastal settlement, and summer lifeguard patrols. Its relaxed holiday atmosphere makes it perfect for picnics and beach barbecues. Closer to Napier, Marine Parade Beach is less about swimming and more about its scenic waterfront. The beach is dangerous and is deemed unfit for swimming. This shingle beach is lined with attractions like the Sunken Gardens and the Pania of the Reef statue, the National Aquarium and mini golf. There’s also a viewing platform that’s a popular place to visit as it offers sweeping views of the ocean. For those seeking a quieter experience, Haumoana Beach provides a rugged shoreline popular for fishing and long walks, while Te Awanga Beach serves as a gateway to the famous Cape Kidnappers gannet colony. Further north, hidden gems like Waipatiki Beach and Tangoio Beach offer secluded beauty. Waipatiki is surrounded by native bush and feels like a secret retreat, while Tangoio combines sandy shores with nearby forest walks and waterfalls. For true isolation, the Mahia Peninsula is hard to beat. Known for its excellent surf and

Waimarama Beach. off-the-beaten-track charm, it features numerous small beaches tucked between dunes and rocky outcrops. Central Hawke’s Bay boasts a rugged yet inviting coastline dotted with beaches that offer something for everyone. Among the most popular are Te Paerahi (Pōrangahau Beach), a vast sandy stretch perfect for long walks and swimming, and Pourerere Beach, known for its familyfriendly vibe and easy access. Kairakau Beach is a favourite for those seeking adventure, offering opportunities for kayaking and snorkelling, while Blackhead Beach and Aramoana (Shoal Beach) provide quieter escapes ideal for fishing or simply soaking up the serenity. Nature lovers will appreciate the Te Angiangi Marine Reserve, located between Aramoana and Blackhead, where rock pools teem with marine life and snorkelling reveals an underwater world. For those who enjoy remote beauty, Mangakuri and Whangaehu beaches deliver a sense of isolation and raw coastal charm. These beaches are not just summer destinations; they are year-round havens for walking, birdwatching, and photography. With sweeping views, golden sands, and a backdrop of rolling hills, Central Hawke’s Bay beaches combine natural beauty with a relaxed atmosphere, making them perfect for day trips or camping adventures. Whether you’re after surf, solitude, or scenic picnics, this stretch of coastline is a true gem of the North Island.

Indulge in quality, local produce

T

hroughout the Bay there are people dedicated to creating traditional, quality foodstuffs thanks to the excellent growing conditions for fruit, vegetables, vines and produce in general. As the region’s reputation for fresh, quality produce grows so too does the number of people setting up business providing quality goods such as hand-made chocolates, French bread and pastries, cow and sheep cheese, olive oil and so on.

For those who prefer to explore the region personally there’s a good choice of products on offer such as figs which are grown in Havelock North and are processed into a fabulous range of jams, chutneys and salami di fichi. Olive products are available at several outlets and there’s an excellent range of oils, drizzles, relishes and antipasto treats. There are several olive oil producers, many award winners, producing fine oil, including extra virgin. While in Havelock North sample a selection of Arataki’s finest honeys and choose your favourite from clover, rata, rewarewa, manuka, and many others, all available at the Arataki Visitor Centre. Hohepa’s award-winning cheeses are equal parts creamy and deep with flavour and character, so it’s worth sampling a few varieties at their onsite shop and select your favourites. Hohepa is on the way to Napier just past Clive on SH51.

The Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market in Hastings offers a relaxed atmosphere, not unlike a traditional village market. Shoppers can browse at their leisure, indulge in breakfast or a sweet treat, listen to live music, and talk to the growers of seasonal fruits, vegetables and seasonal products. Sample and buy fresh, farm picked produce such as capsicum, chillies, limes, figs, mushrooms and herbs along with all sorts of vegetables, fruits and nuts. There’s a great range of jams, preserves, freshly baked breads and pastries along with dressings, vinaigrettes, olives and olive oil. There’s organic meat, bacon, sausages, venison small goods and even duck eggs to be tasted. That’s the great thing about the market as most products can be sampled before buying.

There’s also a similar but smaller market, the Napier Urban Market on Saturday at Clive Square.

Hawke’s Bay: a Great Wine Capital of the World

I

n 2023, Hawke’s Bay was inducted into the prestigious Great Wine Capitals Global Network - joining elite regions like Bordeaux and Napa Valley. This accolade recognizes not only exceptional winegrowing but also worldclass tourism and cultural vibrancy. The Best of Wine Tourism Awards, now in its second year, shine a light on the diversity, innovation, and quality of the visitor experiences that continue to position Hawke’s Bay as one of the world’s Great Wine Capitals. Hawke’s Bay holds the distinction of being the country’s oldest and second-largest wine region. Vines were first planted by Marist missionaries at Mission Estate in 1851, and the region has since earned a global reputation for premium Bordeaux-style reds, Syrah, and rich Chardonnays. History and heritage Early growers like Mission Estate (1851), Te Mata Estate (1896), Church Road (1897), and Vidal Estate (1905) established a strong foundation for Hawke’s Bay’s wine legacy. Today, over 90 wineries, ranging from boutique to large-scale operations, continue the pioneering spirit, anchored by generational families. Climate and terroir Hawke’s Bay enjoys a temperate maritime climate with warm, dry summers and long autumns ideal for ripening late-maturing varieties. Soil diversity is key: alluvial plains, gravelly terraces, sandy loams, clay and limestone in hillside areas. The famed Gimblett Gravels sub region, composed of free draining river gravels, delivers powerful, structured reds. Grape varieties & wine styles Hawke’s Bay grows around 38 grape varieties, with Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Syrah, and Pinot Noir being predominant. • Red blends - Bordeaux-style blends of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, often with Malbec

and Cabernet Franc, noted for ripe fruit and age-worthy structure. • Syrah - elegant, peppery, and floral, reminiscent of northern Rhône wines. • Chardonnay - full-bodied, opulent wines with stone fruit and citrus notes, balanced by crisp acidity. • Sauvignon Blanc & aromatics - fresh, vibrant whites with tropical and herbaceous profiles. Key Sub Regions • Gimblett Gravels: renowned for full-bodied reds. • Bridge Pa Triangle: ancient alluvial soils producing elegant reds. • Coastal areas: ideal for premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Leading wineries & wine tourism With over 35 cellar doors, visitors can explore iconic names like Mission Estate, Te Mata Estate, Church Road, Craggy Range, and boutique gems such as Black Barn and Elephant Hill. Food-and-wine trails, cycling routes, and events like FAWC (Food & Wine Classic) make Hawke’s Bay a must-visit for wine lovers. For more information and a guide to cellar doors see www.hawkesbaynz.com and hawkesbaywine.co.nz

Say hi to your neighbour, give them a wave, share your baking, offer some help and ask if they need anything. Make a little time in your day to look out for each other because good neighbours have good neighbours. If you are worried about an elderly neighbour, seek advice from the Police or Age Concern.

FAMILY FUN

Arataki Honey The Arataki Honey Centre is an enjoyable experience for all ages to visit and learn about bees and honey! Bees are vital to our world food supplies and are used all over the globe to pollinate valuable food crops. Learn about the process of making honey and best practice beekeeping with close-up indoor displays and an observation window looking out to the outdoor hives. In summer at selected times, you can even watch the beekeeper at work! On your way out you can visit the shop and tasting room, with honey tasting stations to sample free honey. There’s plenty of choice when it comes to honey on sale- Manuka honey, specialty honey, classic Kiwi honey, comb honey and propolis and pollen products. Group visits can also be organized in advance and there’s a selection of tours to choose from.

The Faraday Museum of Technology Look back in time and immerse yourself in Hawke’s Bay’s very own museum of technology. This is a favourite place to take the kids to learn about and explore the evolution of technology. It’s a place of discovery where history comes alive through hands-on experience. Rather than read and look at pieces of history, they encourage you to touch, hold items, pull levers, and truly discover how things would’ve been in days gone by. There’s a huge variety of technology and interactive equipment to keep the family entertained for 2 - 3 hours! The Faraday Museum Shop is a treasure trove of curated items such as vintage toys, games and quality NZ made products as well as Faraday Museum souvenirs - plenty of interesting gifts to take away. Open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 9am-3pm.

Splash Planet

Birdwood’s Gallery

There’s a selection of swimming pools throughout the Bay but for many the highlight of summer is a visit to Splash Planet in Hastings.

Just 3kms from Havelock North Village, at 298 Middle Road, Birdwood’s Gallery offers a gallery, a sweet shop, a café and there’s a sculpture garden to explore. The sweet shop is an old-fashioned colonial cottage serving an array of oldfashioned lollies (sweets) such as sour grapes, jet planes, jersey cream caramels and toffee bon bons.

Splash Planet is an amusement park with a host of activities that the whole family can enjoy. While water-based fun is the main attraction there are fun karts, jeeps, tiny town, beach volleyball and a flying fox. Mini golf is always popular and being an 18-hole course there’s fun for all the family. There’s plenty on offer for little ones as there’s a new interactive island with two small slides and a huge tipping bucket. Tiny Town is a toddler’s paradise for the under 7’s and is fully enclosed. Water based activities include the double dipper, sky castle, super cruiser, bumper boats, a sky tunnel and the lazy river. Take a picnic, pre-book a BBQ or purchase food and drinks from two cafes.

Birdwood’s offers one of Hawke’s Bay’s most picturesque settings in which to enjoy their tea, coffee and lunch service. Enjoy full table service in the indoor conservatory, sunroom, garden room, outdoor terrace or verandah areas. There’s an expansive organic kitchen garden producing much of their salads, citrus, herbs and edible flowers. Birdwood’s is fully licensed although their licence does not allow for BYO.

Giant Brewery and Public House in Havelock North is an independent, locally owned and operated brewery. Enjoy a range of brews including PILS, NZPA and IPA. There are beers from other breweries, wines and cocktails and good food. www.giantbrewing.co.nz. Brave Brewing created a new space late in 2020 on the site of the old Herald-Tribune building in Queen Street, Hastings. Matt and wife Gemma started the business in their garage and their good reputation grew. The beer was well received and these are their third premises. The tap room and eatery, part of the Tribune Precinct, are extremely popular. Roosters Brewhouse is a small, long established, brewery and bar also offering food. It’s located on Omahu Road, Hastings. On offer is a range of brews including-draught, lager, IPA, non-alcoholic ginger beer and hot and cold drinks. roosters.co.nz. Hawke’s Bay produces a large quantity of apples so it’s no surprise that this is also a centre of excellence for cider making. Three Wise Birds make cider from apples grown in Hawke’s Bay and Paynters craft authentic cider using traditional cider apples. They received the Champion Cider trophy at the 2024 Cider Awards in Nelson. Before taking off on a tasting adventure check the opening days and hours as not all establishments are open seven days a week.
