EastCoastHirehasalsoaddedtothe midsizelandscapingandconstruction range.Popularnewitemsincludethe BobcatskidsteerandDitchwitchwalk behindmini-skidsteer,aPredatorstump grinder,andalargebattery-operatedHilti JackHammer.The1.7tonneand2.5 tonnediggershavebeenupgradedtonew Yanmardiggerswithtiltinghitches.They canbefittedwithaugerheadsandaugers rangingfrom100mm–600mm.A4WD all-terrainscissorlift,compactenoughtobe cartedonatrailer,hasrecentlybeenadded totheAccessfleet.Thisoffersflexibility andcostsavingsontransportercharges. AcrossNewZealandAprilwasabusy monthofweather,butforGisborne oneofthemostnotableaspects wasthewarmth.While,individually,the daysdidn’tquiteworrytherecordbooks, themonthturnsoutaboveaverageforthe timeofyear,partlyduetoarunofwarmand stickynightsovertheEasterHolidays. Clearandsunnyweatherwasthestory formuchofthesecondweekofthemonth. But,assooftenisthecase,thiswasalso whenwehaveourcoldestnight.The clearskiesallowedasmuchas10hours ofsunshineanddaytimetemperaturesof almost22°Cbutbeneaththosestarryskies thetemperaturedroppedtothecoldestof theyearsofar,just4.6°C.

Aprilwasaslightlywetterthannormal month,around117%ofitsnormalApril rainfall.Muchoftherainarrivedinthelead uptotheEasterWeekendastheremains ofCycloneTammovedacrossthecountry. However,withthecloudiestandwettest weatherclearingbyGoodFriday,therest oftheEasterholidaysweremarkedbydry, warmandsunnyweather.

Deepinthehillsof Tairāwhiti,aquietnetwork ofhuntersismakinga powerfulimpact.

It’scalledKaiConnect,andoverthe pastthreeyears,ithascontributed 15tonnesofvenisontofoodbanks— ensuringfamiliesinneedhaveaccessto nutritiousmeals.

Theinitiativewasfoundedbytwo couplespassionateabouthuntingand givingback—ComandTuiKeenan,and RobandLisaDaunton.

“Wealllovetohuntandsawtwomajor needs—deernumbersneededreducing, andfoodbanksneededmoresupport,” Lisaexplained.

Buttheirmissionextends beyondhunting.They’vealsobuilt Kaiwhakangau,anoutdoorclothing brandthat’sgainingtractiononsocial media.Morethanjustapparel,it’sa movement—eachgarmentsoldhelpsput foodonsomeone’stable.

“Every$100spentatKaiwhakangau meansakiloofmincedvenisongoesto afamilywhoneedsit.Forsome,it’sthe onlymeattheyget,”Lisasaid.

Theideaforthebrandwasbornduring ahunttrip,whenTuiandLisa,tiredof borrowingtheirhusbands’gear,realised agapinwomen’shuntingclothing.

“Mostoutdoorbrandscaterto men—bigsizes,noshape.Wewanted somethingthatactuallyfitwāhine,”Lisa said.

So,theydesignedhuntinggearfor women,including,asTuiputsit,a topwithabuilt-inhandbag—idealfor carryingtissueswhenwipingkids’ noses.They’vesinceexpandedto includemen’sandchildren’sranges.

Rightnow,thehuntsremainselffunded,butthedreamistomakethem financiallysustainable,ensuringthe missionthrives.

“WewantGizzypeopletoknowthey havetheirownoutdoorclothingbrand— onethatgivesbacktothecommunity,” Lisasaid.

Theirworkalignsdeeplywitha teaoMāoriworldview—reducing deernumbers,providingkai,sharing knowledge,andsupportingwhānau.

ComandTui,livinginland,havegood accesstovenison,Tuiisamember oftheWellBeingTeamatWaikirikiri School,sheensurestheschoolchiller staysstockedwithvenisonforstudent lunches.Shealsoteachesparentshow toprocessthemeat—passingdown valuableskills.

LisaandRobhuntprimarilyon PuketoroStation,inlandfromTokomaru Bay.Yearsago,stationownersasked Lisaforhelpmanagingexcessdeer, knowingthecouple’scommitmentto helpingothers.

Sincethen,LisaandRobhavebuilta stronghuntingcommunity,withhunters eitherjoiningthemordonatingtheir excesscatch.

Theirhuntsspanseveraldays.With thelocalshepherdshappytoshare wheretheanimalsare.

Noonegetspaid—theyallcovertheir ownammunitionandsupplies.

“It’sallaboutpassion,community,and givingback,”Lisasaid.

Takingtheshotistheeasypart.The realwork—retrieving,skinning,and butcheringadeer—requiresskilland seriousmahi.

Atnearly60,Lisastillthrivesonthe challenge—evenelbow-deepinadeer, downagully.

“Wehuntsmarternow,usingropesfor

retrieval.Ouryoungerhuntingmates— 18–35-year-oldmenanddads—arelike family.

“I’mtheMum.Mymantra?Lookafter meonthehill,andI’llfeedyouwell.”

Theirlasthuntyielded22deer. Thankfully,Robinstalledawinch systemintheirchiller,easingtheheavy lifting.Lisa,aself-taughtbutcher, processeseverydeerherselftoreduce costs.

Theygetthevenisonmincedata

butcherforasmallcost,supplyingfood banksliketheSalvationArmyandHouse ofBreakthrough.
