CentralHawke’sBayDistrictCouncil’sJobsinCentral Hawke’sBay(JobsCHB)teamiscelebratingafternot onlyexceedingtheirrequiredtargetbutdoingitafull sixweeksaheadofdeadline.
Theteamachievedbeyondtherequiredoutcomesin boththeCommunityEmploymentProgrammeandthe ConnecttoLearnInitiativeFundProject,wellaheadoftheir 30Junedeadline,citinglocalcollaborationandcommunity connectionsastwoofthereasonsfortheirsuccess.
JobsinCentralHawke’sBayisacommunityled programmeconnectingthebusinesscommunitywithlocals seekingmeaningfulemployment.
Theprogrammeprovidessupportwithrecruitment, trainingandinworksupportforbothemployersand
CentralHawke’sBayMayorAlexWalker,right,withtwoofthesatisfied employeeshelpedintotheirjobsbyJobsinCentralHawke’sBay.
employees.Althoughthisprogrammefocusesonsupporting youthunder25,itcanprovidesomeassistancetoanyone lookingforemploymentwithinthecommunity.
TheprogrammeisfundedbytheMinistryofSocial DevelopmentthroughtheMayor’sTaskforceforJobs(MTJ). TheMTJcontractrequirestheteamtohelpplace45youth (under25-year-olds)intosustainableemployment.
Instead,theteamsettheirownofgoalofplacing51youth intojobs.Theychosethisnumberbasedonhowmanyunder 25-year-oldsinCentralHawke’sBaywereontheJobseeker benefitinMarch2023,whichtheyfeltmoreaccurately highlightedtheneedwithinthecommunity.
JobsinCentralHawke’sBayworkswithotherlocal providersandsupportagencies,facilitatingtheSkills, TrainingandEmploymentNetwork.Thenetwork’saim issustainableemploymentoutcomesthroughtraining, supportandcollaboration,andtogethertheyareachieving highlyforthecommunity.
PPNZplantmanagerPaulMacDonaldsaid“Duringthelast 12monthsoneofthegreatestachievementsforPasture Petfoods(PPNZ)wasbeingabletoemploylocalrangitahi.
“Fifty-eightlocalswereemployed,ofwhich30were betweentheagesof16and22.Thiswouldn’thavebeen possibleifitweren’tfortheteamatJobsCHB.
“Likemostemployerswedidn’tevenknowtheseyoung peoplewereouttherelookingforemployment.PPNZhas benefitedfromtheJobsCHB’shelp,especiallywithchanging itspreviousemploymentculture.YouthofCentralHawke’s BayandalllocalsareluckytohavetheJobsCHBteam advocationontheirbehalf,”MacDonaldsaid.

Apowerfulnewexhibitionisshaking thingsupatMTGHawke’sBayTaiAhuriri. Shockwave:Hawke’sBay’sGreatQuake, 1931openstothepublicon28June2025, andbringswithitanunmissable,immersive experience-thebrand-newShakeHouse. InpartnershipwiththeNaturalHazards CommissionTokaTūAke,MTGinvitesvisitors tostepinsidetheShakeHouseandfeelwhata largeearthquakeislike,allwithoutthedanger. It’sanunforgettablewaytoconnectwiththe realityofHawke’sBay’smostdevastating naturaldisaster,whilelearninghowwecan prepareforfutureevents.
Thisredevelopedexhibitionexpandsonthe personalstoriesofloss,survivalandresilience fromthe1931earthquake,wideningthelensto sharethebroaderHawke’sBayexperience.It exploresthesciencebehindthequake,Māori knowledgeandstorytellingthroughRūaumoko, thegodofearthquakes,andpracticalways wecanprotectourselves,ourhomesandour whānau.

AneweraforDannevirkecarefacility
LastNovemberMasonicCareLtd purchasedthePromisiaEileenMary ResidentialCareandRetirement VillageinDannevirke.Thefacilityisnow knownasEileenMaryMasonicCare. AttheoutsettheTrusthadaplanforthe upgrade,includingnewhospitalbeds, newclinicalequipmentforthenurses andmajorrefurbishment.
FacilityManagerDarleneAmboysays thatsincethenconsiderableinvestment hasbeenmadetoupgradeand modernisethefacilitywhichhasbrought aboutanimmensetransformationthat staffandresidentsareveryhappywith. Phaseonehasjustbeencompleted, whichsawrefurbishmentofall theoffices,thestaffroom,and managementoffices.Thenurses’station hasbeenenlargedsotheynowhavea large,comfortableareatoworkin. Allinall,it’sbeenveryexcitingand despitesomedisruptionstheoverall outcomehasbeenverypositivefor staff,theresidentsandtheirfamilies. Darlenesaysthatfamilieswerevery
understanding,whichhasbeenmuch appreciated.
Therearemoreimprovementsdue,and theyarealllookingforwardtophase twowhichwillseetherefurbishmentof communalareas,includingnewcarpet, upgradedlivingroomsandfoyers.The diningroomwillbeupdatedandwill receivenewfurniture.
Sincethechangeofownership,they havesourcedaclinicalleadand increasedclinicalstaffinadditionto sourcingextrahelpinadministration andhousekeeping.
DarlenesaysMasonicisverysupportive andinreturntheteamhaveembraced theMasonicphilosophyandvision:care, community,compassion.

EveryWednesdayeveningduring warmermonthsdozensofdogs andtheirownersgatheratRussell ParkinWaipukurautoattendbasic obediencelessons.Infact,everyyear about50–100peopleandtheirdogs attendthecoursewhichisbased onclickertraining.Oftenthedogs areyoung,ortheymightberescues PresidentoftheclubKayGriffithssays. Followingtheobediencesession therearevarioustrainingsessionsfor clubmembersincludingfoundation classes,astartersclassandanovice
class.Theclubhasprovedpopular overtheyearsandisnowinits26th year.
Aftercompletingthegeneral obedienceclassespeoplecan jointheclubandhavetheirdogs participateinagilitytraining. There’saverystructuredtraining programmecateringtoalllevels,be theybeginnersormoreexperienced dogs.Competingispartandparcel oftheclub,andtheyholdthree competitionsayearbutalsooften traveltootherclubstocompete. Agilityisarealteamwork,saysKay, whocompeteswithasix-year-old dogheadingKC.“Thebondbetween dogandownerisamazing,it’s prettyincredibleandtheslightest movementfromtheownerthey respond.”
Anagilitycompetitionseesdogs directedaroundacoursethatcontain jumps,tunnels,contactequipment suchasthedogwalkandweave poles.Eachdogworkstheirwayup throughfourlevelsofcompetition, fromstarters,throughnovice, intermediateandthetoplevel,senior. Jumperscompetitionsonlyfeature jumpsandtunnelsandcaterforthree levelsofskill;A,BandC.Tomake competitionevenfairerthedogsare
allocatedaheightclassinwhichthey participate-small,mediumandlarge. NZDogsetstherulesmakingit faircountrywide.Travellingfor competitionsisawayoflifefor manyclubmembersandit’savery socialweekendforparticipants. Thereareover40clubsalloverNew Zealandwhorunagilityclassesand competitions.

Clubsiteof156acreswascreated byworkersusingshovels,spades andwheelbarrows.
Sincethentheclubhasflourished andhas140memberswithabout 30whoregularlyflyRossMacdonald ChiefFlyingInstructor(CFI)says. Memberscomefromalloverincluding Dannevirke,Napier,HastingsandNapier. Inits90-yearhistorytherehaveonly beenthreeCFIs.Ross’cousinDon MacdonaldtookRossupforaflight whenhewasstillathighschooland “thatsparkedthebug,”Rosssays.The firstCFIwasJimFranklinthesonof foundingmemberJRFranklin. RosshimselfhasbeenCFIfor23years andhasbeenflyingfor50years.He’s theonlyinstructorandnowhe’sretired hasmuchmoretimetotrainwhich helpsspreadtheworkload.Currently theyareexperiencinganupsurgeof interestandhaverecordnumbersof studentslearningtofly.

Theairfieldhasseveralhangersand fourplaneswhichmeanstraineepilots don’tneedtosupplytheirownplane!
TrainingforaPrivatePilotLicence(PPL) couldtakeseveralyearsaspeople generallyonlyfly/trainonceaweek. However,justrecentlyoneperson passedhisflighttestafteronly14 months.Theapproximatecosttogaina PPLcouldbebetween$15-$17,000.
Rossistrainingseveralhighschool students.Anytraineemustbeableto seeovertheinstrumentpanelsand
reachthepedals.Flyingsolocannot beundertakenuntiltraineesare16and aPPLcannotbeawardedtoanyone below17.

RuahineAnimalRescuecelebratesbig wins-andoneremarkablevolunteer
It’sbeenaseasonofcelebrationforRuahine AnimalRescue,theheartofanimalrescuein CentralHawke’sBay.Thisgrassroots,volunteerpoweredorganisationhasachievedseveral majormilestonesinrecentmonths,thankstothe dedicationofitsteam,andtheongoingsupportof theCentralHawke’sBaycommunity.
OneofthebrightestmomentscamewithCarma AndersonbeingnamedVolunteeringHawke’sBay’s 2025IndividualVolunteeroftheYear.Carma’s selflesscommitmentextendsfarbeyondthe rescue,shealsovolunteersasteamleaderof theFireandEmergencyNZRecoveryTeamand previouslyasTeamLeaderoftheNewZealandRed CrossDisasterWelfareandSupportTeam(DWST), embodyingwhatitmeanstoserve.
WithinRuahineAnimalRescue,Carmahasprovided fostercareforover20dogs,helpingthemrecover andthrivebeforemovingontolovinghomes.In June,shetookontheroleofActingChair,helpingto steertheorganisationintoanexcitingnewchapter.
“Carma’scontributiontoRuahineAnimalRescue hasbeennothingshortofextraordinary,”said aspokespersonforthegroup.“Herleadership, warmth,anddrivemakeheratrueforcefor good,notjustforanimals,butforeveryoneinour community.”
Butthegoodnewsdoesn’tstopthere…Asof30June 2025,therescuehasalreadysurpasseditstotalfor allof2024,with68animalsrescuedandrehomed, andmorestilllookingfortheirfurreverhomes.This milestoneisatestamenttothepowerofpeople comingtogetherwithasharedpassionforhelping animals.
Theorganisationhasalsocelebratedbecoming anofficialregisteredcharity,openingupnew opportunitiesforfunding,partnerships,and
long-termsustainabilityandaspartofnational volunteeringmonth,tothankthepeoplebehindthe scenes,theyrecentlyhostedaVolunteerAfternoon Tea,achancetohonourthededicatedlocalswho givetheirtime,homes,skillsandheartstomaking rescuespossible.
Now,therescueiscallingonthecommunityonce again.

GoingquackyforDuckDay
EveryOctoberWaipawatransforms intoahuboflaughter,community spirit,andcheerfulchaosduring themuch-lovedSpringFlingDuck Race.Knownlocallyas“DuckDay,”this quirkyeventhasbecomeacherished tradition,drawingcrowdsfrom acrosstheregiontothebanksofthe WaipawaRiver.
Thisyeartheeventcelebratesits30th anniversary,markingthreedecadesof rubberduckracing,fundraising,and communityconnection.Thisyear’s DuckDaywillbeheldon11October.
TheDuckRaceisthehighlightof theWaipawaSpringFestival,partof thebroaderSpringFlingseriesthat showcasesCentralHawke’sBay. NellyJullParkbuzzeswithactivity from9a.m.to2pm,featuring100 marketstalls,foodvendorsandlive entertainment.
