Updated SUV range has it all

Isuzu utes are practical – and comfortable too.

If you are looking for a tough ute or SUV that can handle anything New Zealand conditions can throw at it, you should have Isuzu at the top of the shopping list.

Newly updated for 2024, the D-MAX remains a stalwart if you are looking for a dependable but comfortable ute.

Thanks to a 3.5 tonne braked towing capacity, a 5-star ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) safety rating and equipment levels that would put many other new cars to shame, the D-MAX is unbeatable.

The seven seat MU-X large SUV shares these same traits but adds a bit more practicality for the family.

Both the D-MAX and MU-X are powered by a three-litre turbo-diesel

engine paired with a sturdy six speed Aisin automatic transmission.

The D-MAX is available in a range of body types including single, space and double cab variants. There are also 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrain options along with a selection of equipment levels meaning there is a D-MAX for every buyer.

The D-MAX range starts with the workhorse LX which is as ute as they come and is available in single cab, space cab and double cab body types.

Then there’s a step up to the LS-M

Also included is a vastly updated suite of connectivity and multimedia features, including updated infotainment and driver display systems.

The other horse in the Isuzu stable, the seven-seat MU-X large SUV, is tailored to hauling the family around in the utmost luxury. This doesn’t mean it can’t deal a bit of hard work though with excellent 4x4 credentials and the ability to tow a sturdy 3.5 tonnes.

Drivers can rest assured that both the D-MAX and MU-X are as safe as houses and enjoy a maximum 5-star ANCAP safety rating. A wide array of active safety technology is included across both models as standard ensuring that every journey is as safe as possible.

In the official ANCAP statement announcing the D-MAX’s and MUX’s maximum 5-star safety rating, ANCAP commended Isuzu for ensuring high level safety features, technologies and performance across the entire range.

Why wine has its head in the clouds

Amazon Web Services cloud tech brings new boost to wine industry.

The wine industry is undergoing a digital transformation driven by cloud technology – as seen in the partnership between New Zealand’s largest producer of high-quality wine, Indevin Group, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The benefits were particularly evident during recent record harvests, enhancing the quality and efficiency of Indevin’s operations, thanks to the collaboration with AWS.

The relationship shows how technology can empower winemakers to adapt to evolving challenges while maintaining the integrity of their craft.

Indevin, known for brands such as Villa Maria, Esk Valley, Vidal and Thornbury, had to face the daunting task of managing a rapidly growing and extensive harvest operation, when there were also seasonal challenges posed by climate change.

Two years ago, the company started a transformative journey with AWS to digitise and streamline its operations, with the goal of driving efficiencies, enhancing quality and reducing costs. By harnessing the latest cloud technology, Indevin sought to bring together the artistry of winemaking with the precision of science, ushering in a new era of innovation.

In 2022, New Zealand celebrated its largest wine harvest ever, with record-breaking industry yields. At the same time the global demand for this country’s distinctive Marlborough sauvignon blanc continued to grow.

Central to Indevin’s digital transformation was the implementation of real-time data analytics, facilitated by Internet of Things (IoT) sensors used across vineyards, harvesters and wineries. They provided critical insights into various aspects of the harvest, including vineyard conditions, harvest bin utilisation and transport logistics.

By consolidating this data on AWS, Indevin created a comprehensive “single source of truth,” enabling unprecedented visibility and control over the entire harvesting process.

This real-time monitoring not only improved operational efficiency but also enabled proactive decisionmaking, allowing Indevin to mitigate risks and optimise resource allocation during the fast-paced harvest period. Cloud technology has also facilitated advancements in sustainability and resource management within the wine industry. Indevin leverages AWS’s predictive analytics capabilities to forecast demand accurately and optimise daily operations, minimising waste and maximising efficiency.

Visual dashboards provided by Amazon QuickSight enable Indevin’s employees to monitor operations remotely, so they can respond swiftly to changing conditions and optimise resource allocation in real time. This agility is crucial in a dynamic industry where timing is paramount, and where any delay in harvest can compromise the quality of the final product.

As well, AWS IoT Greengrass enables Indevin to place sensors within wineries, collecting data throughout the winemaking process. This provides valuable insights into production bottlenecks and inefficiencies, allowing it to identify and address issues promptly.

By leveraging cloud technology, it can maintain the rhythm of its operations and uphold its commitment to delivering exceptional quality wines to consumers. “Cloud capabilities have revolutionised how we manage our harvests, with our employees able to monitor operations on their mobile devices from anywhere,” says Jason Cook, group winemaker at Indevin. “This gives us the agility we need to act quickly and get the most from every hour of harvest.”

Haren Samarasekera, head of enterprise for AWS New Zealand, says Indevin is a great example of a Kiwi company using the latest cloud technology to optimise operations and enhance competitiveness in the global market. “Cloud technology is not merely a tool for efficiency but also a catalyst for innovation, enabling organisations to unlock new possibilities and drive sustainable growth,” he says. “Indevin’s success story serves as a testament to the potential of cloud technology to transform traditional industries and pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.”

The tractor punching above its weight

New connectivity capabilities sets Case IH models apart.

Farmers visiting Fieldays are being urged to pounce on Case IH’s most powerful AFS Puma to discover for themselves power, performance and prestige.

The AFS Connect Puma tractor has just been launched into the Australian and New Zealand markets, with a range of new design features and performance updates, including the connectivity capabilities of its larger Steiger, Magnum and Optum stablemates.

“The Puma has always punched well above its weight when it comes to performance and versatility in the

mid-range of our tractor models, and now with the addition of the AFS Connect platform it’s made an already strong tractor even better, offering customers everything they could once only find in our larger tractors,” says Lawrence Polga, Case IH Australia/NZ product manager for Puma tractors.

The new AFS Connect Puma models will also come with continuously variable transmission (CVT) as standard. A new 260hp model will be introduced, where previously the range stopped at 240hp. There are also bigger rear tyres, a stronger front axle and on the higher horsepower models in the range a bigger back axle as well.

The most exciting upgrade though is around the Puma’s technology capabilities, with the Case IH AFS Connect telematics package allowing for instant two-way data transfer between the tractor and the AFS Connect online management portal. This gives owners and farm managers complete control over farm, fleet and data management.

Tractor performance and implement operating data are immediately, securely, and continuously sent to the online portal for monitoring by the owner and/or operator. “So, they can make management decisions more precisely and with greater speed, supported by instantly accessible and accurate data, both current and historical. You can also monitor realtime information such as the location of the tractor, its fuel levels and other key management and performance data,” Polga says.

The Fieldays Rural Advocacy Hub in collaboration with Federated Farmers of New Zealand brings together different groups championing, educating and supporting those in and across the rural sector. Working together under one roof as one team and serving as a platform for discussions and initiatives aimed at amplifying the voices and concerns of the country’s rural communities. With nearly a dozen exhibitors in the hub for its inaugural year, there will be representation for young farmers, rural women, a voice for the future of farming, and many more.

From pizza, burgers, tacos, curries, to low and slow BBQ, it’s time to get stuck into the flavours of Fieldays. With Good George Bars at three convenient locations at Fieldays with a range of food trucks alongside, you won’t need to walk far to get well-fed and watered. Animals

Animals are not permitted at Fieldays, except for certified disability-assist dogs.

Bus services

Use your Fieldays ticket to catch a free bus to and from Fieldays from various bus routes around the Waikato. Check out the full Park ‘n Ride timetable and locations on our website.

Emergencies

In case of an emergency please dial 111 and provide your location as 125 Mystery Creek Road, Ōhaupō, state the nearest intersection being Airport Road and Mystery Creek Road and provide your contact details. Then contact the event office on 0800 00 44 44 or 07 843 4497.

First aid

For general first aid visit Exhibitor Services near the corner of E street and M road or call 0800 004 444 or 07 843 4499 for further assistance.

Food and beverage

Food vendors are located across three large Food Courts, and also at the Village Green backed by OneNZ. Coffee carts are located throughout the venue. There are three Good George Bars at Fieldays, each with food vendors alongside (see the Map for locations).

Helicopter

A designated helicopter landing zone is located beside the Waikato River jetty (near Gate 7). For access to this helipad, please contact Helicorp on 0800 NZHELI or 07 843 3447. For enquiries about catching a jet boat to and from Fieldays, please contact Camjet on 0800 CAMJET.

Information Centre

There are three Information Centres at Fieldays, these are located at North Entry, South Entry and inside the Pavilion.

Mobility scooters

A limited number of Mobility Scooters are available for hire while at Fieldays from Mobility Centre, Hamilton - these need to be pre-booked prior to arriving at the event. Call Mobility Centre 07 903 7050 or email hamilton@ mobilitycentre.co.nz to book. Hire scooters will be available to collect (with prior booking) at the bottom of Gate 2 hill, behind the Good George Bar & Eatery.

Missing persons

If you need to report a missing person, or if you are separated from your group, go to the New Zealand Red Cross site located at E43.

Opening times

Gates to the event are open Wed to Fri 8am to 5pm and on Sat 8am to 4pm.

Parcel assist

To help make departing Fieldays as seamless as possible we have added the following service: Shuttles will be operating on a continuous loop at both Gate 1 and Gate 2 hills, offering a convenient pick-up and drop-off service for visitors from the event platform to the top of each hill.

Parents rooms

Parents rooms are located inside the Pavilion and at New Zealand Red Cross (site E43), with the following facilities:

• Hot water

• Microwaves

• Changing tables

• Comfy seating

There are also additional change tables in selected toilets at Fieldays. Refer to the map.

Parking

Ample free parking is available at Fieldays. Keep a lookout for buses shuttling visitors from the furthest car parks to the Fieldays gates. Mobility access parking is available for CCS permit holders and is accessible through Gate 2 off Mystery Creek Road.

Recycling and waste

Fieldays is working towards decreasing our waste to landfill. If you have any recyclable or compostable material, such as glass, plastic or cardboard, the clearly marked bin stations and volunteers will help you to ensure it is placed in the correct bins.

Smart Band

The Fieldays Smart Band offers an innovative and interactive way for visitors to easily connect with their favourite exhibitors at Fieldays.

Don’t let traffic stress you out when heading to Fieldays. Prepare for delays, and allow extra time to get here and back.

Free Buses

Catch a Regional or Hamilton City bus to the Hamilton Transport Centre, then jump on a bus to Fieldays. Departing every 30 minutes from 7am to 11 am, returning from 1 pm to 5.30 pm a bus is the most stressfree way to go.

Regional buses include; Raglan, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Paeroa, Te Aroha, Morrinsville and Huntly. Just present your Fieldays ticket to take this free ride. Go to busit.co.nz or call 0800 205 305 for more info.

Free Park ‘n Ride

You can park for free at the following locations: The Base (Te Rapa, Hamilton), Cambridge BMX Club (corner of Milton and Lamb St) or Te Awamutu (i-SITE, Gorst Ave) and catch a free Fieldays bus.

Departing every 30 minutes. To Fieldays: buses run 7 am – 11 am from Fieldays: buses run 1 pm – 5.30 pm to these above locations.

Self-drive

Parking at Fieldays is free and is open from 6am each day. Check www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/journeyplanner before you start your journey. *Tip: travel early to avoid possible queues and have a good playlist loaded!

Helicopter

Rural Advocacy Hub backs farmers at Fieldays

New hub brings agriinterest groups under one roof.

A dedicated Fieldays Rural Advocacy Hub will make its first appearance at the event this year in collaboration with Federated Farmers.

It will bring together the various rural organisations advocating for farmers and championing their interests as one team, under one roof, for the first time. It will also serve as a central platform for discussions,

announcements and initiatives to amplify the voices and concerns of this country’s farmers and rural communities.

With almost a dozen exhibitors in its inaugural year, there will be strong and diverse representation of exhibitors at the hub including Federated Farmers, Young Farmers, Groundswell, Rural Women, Future

Farmers NZ, Farmers Weekly and many more.

Peter Nation, New Zealand National Fieldays Society’s chief executive, says it’s great to be able to work alongside Federated Farmers to deliver a dedicated advocacy space like this.

“This new hub delivers on Fieldays’ purpose of advancing agriculture

through both education and collaboration. We know it’s incredibly tough out there this year. It’s never been more important for farmers to be heard and to have advocates amplifying their voice.”

With Federated Farmers being New Zealand’s leading rural advocacy organisation, they were a natural fit to partner with to bring the hub to life.

“Fieldays provides the opportunity for connection and collaboration, and this hub will live those values,” he says.

Wayne Langford, Federated Farmers president, says the hub builds on its vision to unite rural advocacy groups as one team supporting farmers: “Farmers want to see the different advocacy groups who represent them working together constructively to get the best outcomes we can for our rural communities.

“If we work as a team, with everyone playing in the right position, we can achieve a lot more for farmers than any one organisation can working alone. We’ve all got our own positions and roles to play in the team, but we need to be working together and communi tinuing to build on the concept in the future.

Farmers are invited to come and discuss the issues affecting the future of farming in New Zealand at the Fieldays Rural Advocacy Hub at site D70, in the Gallagher Building.

Fieldays Hubs have something for everyone

Careers and education in the primary industry one of seven Hubs at Fieldays.

No matter your age or occupation Fieldays has a hub for you. The concept of grouping exhibitors together who have a common area of interest has long been part of Fieldays, with three hubs, centred around careers, health and wellbeing and innovation.

But that’s now grown to seven hubs after the highly successful launch of Sustainability Hub in 2023 and newcomer the Fieldays Rural Advocacy Hub appearing for the first time this year.

“It’s a great way to provide space that can help facilitate conversations among like-minded people,” says Steve Chappell, Fieldays Programme Manager.

A big part of the hubs’ success can be attributed to their providing something new to get visitors excited every year.

“Whether you’re a schoolkid looking at your career choices or are older and thinking about a career change, there’ll be plenty that will be of interest,” Chappell says.

Those wanting to expand their search and gather more information on their area of interest will once again be able to use the Fieldays app to find more of the exhibitors dotted around the site.

“The big change is the involvement of Ngāti Hauā,” Chappell says. “It’s a fantastic partnership for us.”

Chappell says the hub is not just for farmers but will have plenty of interest for urban visitors when it comes to how everyone can play their part in environmental protection and enhancement.

The Sustainability Hub will once again be on the corner of M Road and E Street, next to the Village Green.

The Hauora Taiwhenua Health & Wellbeing Hub debuted at Fieldays in 2017 and grows larger every year with 48 exhibitors taking part in 2024.

All manner of health issues can be canvassed here with experts and visitors can take the first step towards a healthier future with free hearing tests and blood pressure checks on offer. The hub is on E Street near N Road.

The Fieldays Digital Futures Hub in the Pavilion is still in its infancy, growing and evolving each year to showcase the innovation and technology options in the Primary Sector. Agritech New Zealand will once again be the overarching body here, helping put a range of different connectivity solutions in front of farmers so they are more aware of the increasing range of apps and programmes.

Some great success stories have come from small beginnings here in the past and most certainly will in the future.

The Forestry Hub will be at the site entrance at G80 with 25 exhibitors taking part. It was launched two years ago and since then has given many students a closer look at the career opportunities available in this sector as well as showcasing to the general public the ways in which forestry and wood-processing contribute to the national economy.

Health is wealth for farmers at Fieldays

Thousands expected to check-out the Health & Wellbeing Hub.

Growing from strength to strength there will be 45 exhibitors in the Fieldays Hauora Taiwhenua Health and Wellbeing Hub this year, a jump from 30 last year.

Health conditions from top (macular degeneration) to toe (orthotics) will all be covered making the hub even more of a one-stop health shop.

The hub first made an appearance at Fieldays in 2017 and by last year’s event 25,000 visitors out of a total of 105,000 had checked out just what was on offer there.

“Rural people are hard to reach,” says Mobile Health Group’s chief executive, Mark Eager. “But those who come to Fieldays are so hungry for information.”

“It’s surprising the number of people who walk in who are not engaged as they’ve been looking at tractors,” Eager says. “But once they’re in the hub they are.”

In the past there have been queues to get a worrisome mole or spot checked out or to have a free and probably long overdue blood pressure check.

Last year paediatric physicians on site in the hub recorded an average of 170 discussions daily where they were able to alleviate parents’ concerns about vaccinating their children. They will be back again this year along with the popular Blow-Up Brain

display which can help start difficult conversations about forgetfulness and brain function.

Brain Tumour Support, Cure Parkinson’s, Dementia NZ, the Neurological Foundation and Health NZ’s Mental HealthManaaki Raatonga aa iwi will all be represented while if the mental health of a rural neighbour is causing concern, the Rural Support Trust will be giving farmer-tofarmer advice once again along with Lifeline Connect.

There’s increased concern in the medical field that with recent workforce shortages on-farm, more farmers are turning up late for appointments or missing them altogether. That means conditions can be very advanced by the time they’re seen so early detection needs to be targeted.

To help with this a new exhibitor will be Ka Ora Telehealth Group where people who can’t get an appointment

to see their doctor in the short term can find out more information on the health issues concerning them.

It’s very common for family members to encourage each other into the hub for a hearing check which will this year be available at two sites. For the first time there will be the offer of hearing aids being fitted with free use for the duration of Fieldays - and the option to buy rather than return them.

Also making its first appearance in the hub will be the new Waikato Medical School, which after signing a memorandum of understanding with the coalition Government is looking to interest rural youngsters in training as doctors.

The Fieldays Hauora Taiwhenua Health and Wellbeing Hub will be in the same position as last year on E Street near N Road with emergency services such as the Search and Rescue, Fire and Emergency NZ and Hato Hone St John right next door.

Test out a trike

When Liam Carter was five he started riding a trike.

“It made a big difference,” he says. “I could get around; I had my independence, and I could go out and meet people.”

Keen to show other people the advantages they too could enjoy, the 16-year-old with Cerebal Palsy founded Ride Your Trike, and for the first time will be in the Fieldays Hauora Taiwhenua Health and Wellbeing Hub..

He’s been a vocal advocate for increased cycling safety for the last two years and partners with River Riders at Hamilton Gardens, renting trikes that can be ridden alongside the Waikato River. As well he’s also involved in the Try a Trike School Programme where pupils can safely have a go at sampling a different mode of transport for themselves.

At Fieldays he’ll have a mix of locally manufactured and imported trikes on show as well as hi-spec e-Trikes which feature a throttle control. Visitors will be able to try them out, ask him for further information and buy if they wish.

Nothing lame about herd health

World-class technology can save dairy farmers shedloads of money through early detection of cow lameness. Research shows lameness costs the New Zealand dairy industry millions of dollars every year – and identifying just one lame cow early may save farmers in excess of $500 per head.

OmniEye’s new brand identity, Herd-i, is focused on reducing lameness as well as those costs and chief executive Andrew Christie says the change of brand shows its commitment to revolutionise dairy farming by bringing intelligence, innovation, and intuition to everything it does.

Its automated livestock monitoring system leverages computer vision, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning to identify locomotion traits and trends for individual dairy cows. It was set up in 2021 and was trained using tens of thousands of vet scores to provide daily locomotion data for dairy herds. This aids early detection of lameness and other animal traits and welfare issues so treatment can be started promptly before more serious animal health issues develop. Not only can this cut farmers’ costs but can also save time

for them, their staff and vets they may otherwise need to call in.

The non-intrusive Herd-i camera can be easily installed at a milking shed’s exit race. All that’s required is a good on-farm internet connection, a hardsurface exit race which must be longer than six metres and mostly flat and cows walking preferably in single file.

The video footage the camera records is then streamed to the cloud, where machine learning models detect and score cows identified using existing EID readers. This information is then fed into a reporting dashboard which

gives a locomotion score between 0 (healthy) to 3 (very lame) for each cow, using the DairyNZ locomotion scoring system. So remote monitoring of individual cows is possible as well as historical trends with all this information able to be easily viewed.

The tens of thousands of data points collected allow farmers to make early and informed decisions about herd health and wellbeing, leading to better outcomes and improved profitability through minimising production losses.

Early intervention with a quick response can directly affect their bottom line by preventing losses that can cost well over $500 every time there’s a lameness incident. Christie believes there’s potential, in reducing dairy cow lameness, to save farmers who are milking 1000-cow herds more than $40,000 a year.

Herd-i system’s development by a team of experts, including vets, gives farmers the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly data-driven and digital-led sector, he says. It’s recently recorded a 471 per cent increase of locomotion scores recorded year on year, hitting a total of 10 million.

The computer vision technologies it uses are already world-class, and late

last year it partnered with Waikato Milking Systems at a time when it was already recording more than one million locomotion scores a month.

“As specialists in lameness detection, the innovation pipeline has been a real focus area for us,” Christie says. “Our commercialisation and growth have come through hard work and great partnerships, and so our new identity was designed to better reflect our ambitions. We’re rolling out an enhanced customer dashboard and insights, recently deployed notifications for users to be alerted to issues introducing a number of partner integrations with drafting and herd management systems, and we’re readying the ship for the Body Condition Scoring (BCS) launch in 2025.”

These advancements were crucial steps in delivering a comprehensive suite of tools that would set new industry standards.

Sixth fencing title on line for reigning champ

More than $30,000 in prize money up for grabs.

Current world fencing champion Tony Bouskill, pictured, will be trying to make it six wins in the Golden Pliers by Wiremark single competition at Fieldays this year.

He and his father, Shane, will also be looking to take out a sixth Fieldays Silver Spades doubles championship.

Tony, who’s based in Tutira, northern Hawke’s Bay, has claimed a rare trifecta in the past, being the first to finish (first-off the line), while also taking out best quality award and then becoming overall winner. This is unusual because being a time penalty event, points are applied and keep being added after the first person comes off the line, meaning the first to finish will often sacrifice quality.

“You should be able to have the speed and do a good job,” he says.

“I didn’t start out that way as I was just trying to catch up with the older guys.”

Ground conditions on the day will have a lot to do with the result.

“If it’s raining it makes life a bit harder, but if it’s cooler and foggy that can make things better,” he says.

While he says he’s never really trained before the event, this year the 34-year-old has been concentrating on building up his fitness through running and playing some squash.

In 2019 he became World Fencing Champion at a competition held in Germany, following his father to the title (who won in 2015 and was second in 2017). It hasn’t been held for the last four years due to Covid but will take place in 2025 with this year’s Golden Pliers winner qualifying to take part.

Shane, who’s also based in Hawke’s Bay where he and wife, Joelene, run S & J Contracting, has won four Golden Pliers competitions in the past. In 2016 when he won, Tony was second; their positions were reversed with Tony coming first in 2022 and Dad second - a result 53-year-old Shane puts down to old age.

Shane started taking part in fencing competitions in 1998. “I was in the industry and just turned up on the day,” he says.

and Cambridge Fencing Competition earlier this year. They were also second in the Hawke’s Bay Doubles Competition and finalists in the New Zealand Rural Games held in Palmerston North.

But their concentration is now firmly on the doubles at Fieldays, an event they won five times in a row until last year when they came second behind Jeff Joines and Mark Lambert.

The Bouskills don’t talk to each other while they’re competing. “We just know what we’ve got to do,” Shane says.

But both agree that if something goes wrong that’s when the talking really starts.

Heats for both the singles and doubles competitions will be run by New Zealand Fencing Competitions (NZFC) on Monday. The Fieldays Silver Staples cadet competition is held on Wednesday morning then Thursday morning sees the Golden Pliers by Wiremark kick off. The Fieldays Silver Spades is on Friday with a doubles team from the United States, the winners of US Platinum Doubles Championship, taking part, adding an international flavour.

Prizegiving will be held at the end of the day where a range of impressive trophies and over $30,000 in prize money will be presented.

Calibre of farmer-led innovations on the rise

Over 60 new farm-based ideas competing for prizes at Fieldays.

The Innovation Hub regularly tops the list of the most visited areas at Fieldays and this year it will be showing off a new look and feel to appeal to an even wider audience.

While it’s in the same place, at the corner of M and D Roads, the area has been redesigned and rebranded to enhance visitors’ experience.

Over 65 entries have been received this year, well up on the 50 on show in 2023, says Steve Chappell, Fieldays Programme Manager. “Despite tough times farmers are still coming up with innovations. In fact, the need for resourcefulness and self-sufficiency stimulates innovative thinking.”

Traditionally creations straight out of the farm shed have been entered in the competition and have gone on to have a big impact, helping to transform the primary sector. But last year there was a further increase in innovation entries from the

sustainability and green-tech areas, highlighting the diversification being seen now.

A big drawcard of the hub is its collaborative atmosphere even though all the entrants are competing for the same prizes, Chappell says.

“It’s great for the first timers to be situated alongside a company that has a global presence. Year after year, we are continually amazed by the exceptional quality of our entrants. Fieldays is built on innovation, and this is the ultimate platform to showcase ideas.”

Another change this year is the evolution of the previous judging process. To make judging more robust, a short-list of five innovations on show in the hub and on other sites will be selected as finalists, and go through online and in-person judging, before the final winners are announced.

New level of technology in pest traps

Latest traps can detect the difference between pets and pests.

Advances just keep coming in pest control – and NZ AutoTraps is showing off three of its best at Fieldays.

Its AT220 has gained acclaim domestically and abroad for its effectiveness and convenience dealing with pests such as mice, rats, possums, feral cats and mustelids. Customers range from homeowners to the Department of Conservation (DoC) and prominent iwi groups.

It’s self-resetting – meaning reduced labour costs as it only requires maintenance checks every four to six months. That leads to reduced pest numbers, higher yields for farmers and flourishing native species.

The AT230-ChipCheck model has a microchip reader at the entry of the trap, so should a microchip from a domestic pet be detected, the trap is de-activated. This makes it ideal for use in both urban and rural areas.

AutoTrap’s latest addition, the AT520-AI, being unveiled at Fieldays, is state-of-the-art – AI-enabled for intelligent pest targeting and with remote monitoring features. The company has partnered with Predator Free 2050 to enter its new model for an Fieldays Innovation Award.

All three models can be seen at the Innovation Hub and the Predator Free 2050 site E38.

To make sure visitors feel more invested they will get the chance to have their say in the People’s Choice Award by voting for their favourite innovation through use of their Fieldays wristband. The highest polling entry will win $2,000 and one randomly selected voter for any innovation will receive a voucher up to the value of $500.

They’ll be able to visit all entries not on show in the Innovation Hub through use of the trail on the Fieldays app which will overlay the different site locations on a site map for easy access.

The four Innovations Awards categories remain the same with the Prototype category being the incubator of new ideas and earlystage concepts, and the Early-Stage category highlighting innovations which have launched commercially within the last year.

Growth & Scale category entries are already making their mark both here and overseas with commercial success in at least two countries within the last four years and are now ready to take on new markets.

The Young Innovator of the Year Award will once again recognise just how important it is to foster the next generation of innovators in the primary sector. This category is open to entrants in all three categories who are aged 19 and under.

The Innovation Awards are supported by sponsors Amazon Web Services (AWS), Gait International, King St. Advertising, NZME, Sprout Agritech, and Blender Design. Together with Fieldays they provide over $70,000 worth of cash, support and promotion including expert advice, product design and development, marketing and media support. Trust aims to help restore Waikato River to its natural state

Ngāti Hauā Mahi Trust is set to take on a much larger role in Fieldays this year through its involvement in the design of the Sustainability Hub.

Its focus will extend to being part of the spear-shaped display in the hub showing how despair at rubbish found in the Waikato River, such as wrecked cars and dumped supermarket trolleys, can be turned to abundance through planting and restoring the river’s banks to their natural state.

The descendants of Ngāti Hauā Paramount Chief Wiremu Tamihana Tarapipipi Te Waharoa (1805-1866), the trust continues to honour his vision of Kingitanga, manaakitanga (hospitality), and kaitiakitanga (guardianship).

For many years Ngāti Hauā, now led by Tumuaki Hone Thompson, have performed the karakia opening Fieldays as well as offering cultural support to the New Zealand National Fieldays Society. “We’ve been there from the get-go,” says Keri Thompson, the Morrinsville-based trust’s chief executive.

Since 2012, the trust has planted over 900,000 plants into a number of Waikato wetland and riparian projects with its nurseries producing up to 200,000 seedlings a year. It employs 15 permanent staff with numbers increasing during the planting season. Work is being carried out on 10 active projects spread across the Waikato and which involve local and regional councils and individual landowners.

The area the Ngāti Hauā iwi have inhabited for more than four centuries and which the trust now works stretches east along the eastern banks of the Waikato River, to include the Matamata-Piako district and south to Cambridge and Maungatautari.

There are five marae - with the catchments around them traditionally being large repo (swamps) - connecting Ngāti Hauā to other iwi as well as being important travelling routes.

A major part of the trust’s establishment was to revive connections which were lost due to

colonisation and later industrial development. So, it is dedicated to renewal of the environment through the growing of plants which it believes have a key role in transforming waterways, vegetation and people and to reaching out to the wider community for the common good.

This involves native plant supply and planting, pest management services and site preparation and management on projects that are culturally significant to Ngāti Hauā. It has two native nurseries at Morrinsville and a partnership nursery with Fonterra at Hautapu. All the plants grown and planted by the trust have been eco-sourced from within the Waikato district with some species’ seed coming from as close to where they will be planted as possible.

Thompson is encouraging Fieldays visitors to come to the Sustainability Hub to get a closer look at the many ways the banks of the Waikato are being restored as well as getting an idea of the work still to be carried out. Each day will start with a karakia which other exhibitors are welcome to attend.

“It’s all about being united, starting off the day and getting on with it,” she says.

While the trust won’t be selling plants on site, there will be an opportunity for visitors to sponsor a seedling which will then be planted as part of the Mystery Creek planting Project being run by the Fieldays Society.

How science is helping farmers

Collaboration between some of NZ’s best brains will show farmers how to reduce emissions and improve their business resilience.

Some of New Zealand’s best science and innovation to help boost on-farm profitability, protect the environment and reduce agricultural greenhouse gas emissions will be a feature of Fieldays this year.

The Science for Farmers site is a new collaboration between the Ministry for Primary Industries’ (MPI) On Farm Support service and research partners AgResearch, AgriZeroNZ, LIC, Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research, Massey University and the New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre (NZAGRC).

Dr John Roche, MPI’s On Farm Support director and chief science adviser, says the initiative aims to better connect scientists and researchers with farmers and grower:

“The Science for Farmers site will enable farmers and growers to learn firsthand about the science helping New Zealand’s agricultural sector become even more efficient and adapt to change,” he says.

“It will have interactive features, giving farmers more information about practical actions that can be taken now to reduce on-farm emissions. Importantly, it will provide details about tools and technology being developed to help the sector in the future.”

The site will cover pasture, genetics and other mitigation tools that can sustainably increase on-farm profitability, while improving long-

term business resilience.

A diverse pastures exhibit will see Massey University and AgResearch share the science and innovation behind the latest pastoral practices, giving farmers options around their most important home-grown feed.

“Breeding climate-friendly sheep and cattle that can reduce emissions without sacrificing productivity is the focus of a segment presented by LIC and AgResearch,” he says. “An exhibit hosted by AgriZeroNZ and NZAGRC will share information on what’s coming next, with future potential tools and the research pathways behind successful, adoptable emission reduction options, environmental stewardship and the latest research investments.

“Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research is also part of the site and will give farmers and growers practical tips to increase soil carbon and build resilience to climate change, such as small plantings of diverse trees.”

An interactive activity at the site, delivered by On Farm Support regional advisers, will also help farmers understand what their emissions are today and the steps they could take to reduce them.

The family on a winning run at Fieldays

His father won the Tractor Pull in the 1990s, now Dan Reymer wants to in 2024.

Dan Reymer is proud to be known as Tractor Pull leader at Fieldays. With his family, who run a contracting business in Pirongia, southwest Waikato, he is steeped in the history of this popular event.

His father Steve, now in his 50s, won the event back in the 1990s with his brothers Andrew and Bill taking out second and third places. And while Steve doesn’t compete anymore, he’s still one of a group of volunteers who help out with running the Tractor Pull, particularly the care and attention paid to grooming the track.

“I think he still enjoys it,” Dan says.

“It’s a good time of year because there’s not much going on with work. It’s a good excuse to clean and tidy the tractors and afterwards we can sit around and give each other stick. It’s all good friendly banter and we can have a good catch-up session because we’re all in the same game.”

History of the Tractor Pull

Tractor pulling is often regarded as the oldest motorsport globally, tracing back to the 1860s when farmers engaged in friendly competitions to showcase the strength of their draft horses.

The objective was simple: determine whose horse could

pull the greatest weight over the longest distance. The Tractor Pull was introduced to Fieldays in 1975. From its humble beginnings of small horsepower, manual gear boxes, two-wheel drive and mechanical problems, we fastforward to an era where we see

Reymer Agriculture is a third generation contracting business, set up by the late John Reymer senior. His son, Bill, took over in the 1970s and in turn his sons, Chris and Mike entered the business in 2005. Urged on by his father, Dan started competing in the Tractor Pull as soon as he got his license back in 2014. “I wasn’t that great because it was all new,” he says. “It’s a lot to do with setting up the tractors beforehand rather than just driving them. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes, for example setting up the horsepower to weight ratio. And modern tractors are a completely different game without a manual gearbox.”

He came second in a tight competition in 2022 and he’ll be back again this year on the same tractor he drove in 2023, which is a smaller size but delivers more horsepower. “This time I’m thinking of what I could do to change things,” he says. “I want to see if I can get it to work better for me.”

His hopes were boosted by winning a regional competition in January: “I’m going to take the same approach as (he did) there and hope it works.”

First thing on the morning of the competition he’ll be working out whether to let his tyres down or add more weight to get more traction. “There’ a lot of luck in it as well,” he says. “And the weather can change things by the hour or even the minute.”

Much of the pleasure, alongside taking out a title of course, is the enjoyment of the large crowd which gathers to see the races. There are four categories: weight adjusted, weight transfer, modified and pre-1985 tractors. Competitors battle it out over three days of heats on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before the finals take place from 8am to

1.30pm on Saturday at the river end of M Road.

The modified class is a firm favourite with the crowd’s attention level noticeably lifting when drivers bring them out to show what they’ve got.

“It’s really good when the crowd gets involved. But it’s also a good place to sit down and relax while you’re watching,” Reymer says.

His company regularly enters around seven or eight of its drivers in the competition, with other contracting firms doing the same, creating a longstanding professional but friendly rivalry. “It’s a good time of year because there’s not much going on with work. It’s a good excuse to clean and tidy the tractors and afterwards we can sit around and give each other stick. It’s all good friendly banter and we can have a good catch-up session because we’re all in the same game.”
