TWO GENERATIONS OF DESIGNERS Architectural Graduate Tess Fenwick on Collaboration, N.Y.C. and Ideas
Local architecture practice Neil Fenwick Architects is keeping it in the family. With the recent addition of Architectural Graduate and daughter, Tess, the office now has two generations of designers. “We really enjoy working together, there are twice as many ideas and there is always someone to give critical feedback so that ideas are fully developed.” Neil Fenwick Architects are finding that the generation gap is also an advantage, Neil has a lot of experience in the discipline, and is very keen and willing to pass on his knowledge. “I am very lucky whereby I can ask unlimited questions, I am learning so much every day and I really value that.” Tess graduated in 2012 with a Master of Architecture (Professional) (Second Class Hons) from UNITEC and is currently working towards her registration. Tess recently returned to Hawke’s Bay from working in New York City. There she worked for a small boutique Architectural practice on a 9 story
single family townhouse on the Upper East Side in Manhattan. “NYC was invigorating in all aspects, it was a very exciting year – working and socially!” With her work on residential and commercial projects, Tess thrives on problem solving and enjoys the challenge of successfully answering a client’s brief. “I love the interaction with clients, from hearing what they require or how they live, to then producing exciting solutions that answers each specific brief.” Tess prides herself on her design skills and having the ability to produce high quality, bespoke concepts and ideas that she likes to see through a project to completion. “I am detail orientated and am particularly enthused by a high level of quality, interesting materiality and textures, juxtaposition, lighting and the play of light, colours and clean lines.” In her spare time Tess likes to keep fit and healthy. She enjoys the gym, plays hockey, cycles and runs. She has a particular interest in fashion, design and interiors.

The well –considered building form is expressed using material and details of human scale, providing a sense of texture, play and delight. The continuation of the wall battens to the roof of the structure is also clever, allowing for good ventilation and security.

Lifesty le Haumoana Reserve Park Toilets Set between the coastal road and iWay cycle path, and the sea, this new toilet services coastal walkers and cyclists together with the overnight freedom campers that park in the reserve. Designed for The Hastings District Council it replaces an outdated, dark and smelly public toilet facility that originally serviced the reserve. Robustness and practicality dictated the choice of precast concrete panels for the walls with a roof floated above to let air and light freely enter the building between these two elements to add to the experience of users and to reduce the need for mechanical ventilation and artificial lighting.
The site is both coastal and rural with the kiwi rural red shed referenced in form and colour. The ‘cubicles’ are split with a covered area between, to break the visual bulk and to provide shelter. Whilst the concrete walls address durability they do not solve maintenance issues with regard to grafitti and these walls are ‘decorated’ with recesses cast into the concrete panels which are left natural in colour, clearcoated in Uracryl, to take away the blank canvas they would offer taggers. Above the solid colour of the concrete walls is natural timber. Stained Tonka hardwood battens sitting between the walls and plywood soffit provide a delicate lattice of contrasting light and shade. The plywood soffit is stained too, allowing the pattern of the grain to be seen.

Lattey have been helping design and build community and private assets in the Bay for almost 70 years. The innovated approach we take has seen us provide alternative screw piling design to large scale projects, such as the milk powder dryer foundation for Fonterra in Paihatua, but also include providing the same screw piling services to local residential houses.

Liz is the `go-to`designer when an inventive solution is required. Yet she insists on a practical & functional kitchen too. Her work spans the lower North Island. Winning Designer of the Year was an achievement. She is experienced with colour & soft furnishings so she can provide the complete solution for many projects.
Marie loves her Kitchen Studio kitchen so much she has joined the team. Her original dream was to be an architect; however, kitchen architecture has won the day. She specialises in small spaces with clever & creative solutions. Having been a nurse she listens intently and is very empathetic. Her clients love her.
Mischelle has a continuing love of kitchens & design. She had her own design & installation business on the Kapiti Coast. Plus she knows all about Mitre 10 kitchens having worked there too. However, she missed the contact with clients in their homes. Decisions are best made in the home where problems can be resolved & solutions planned. In her spare time Mischelle is off on her motorbike.
Beth designed kitchens in Auckland for many years & was a member of Certified Designers Society. Returning to Hawke’s Bay was, for her, coming home. Married to Alan, a dedicated kitchen installer, means that no facet is over-looked. Beth’s favourite style is a country look with butler’s sinks, traditional cooker, cornice & beautiful detailing.

Barking Mad Landscapes is actually a very good choice, if you are looking to put your project in the hands of a team that will take it from dream to reality, and expertly cover all the steps in between. Barking Mad was established in 2003 by Roger and Tara Kennedy, inspired by their desire to design unique landscapes to suit clients’ individual needs and lifestyles - and then build them. They do this by working in close conjunction with their clients and establishing strong working relationships with them. Their skills and determination paid off, with landscape awards and more clients seeking their expertise including major businesses such as Unison, the DHB, Sileni Winery and Off the Track restaurant. The business grew, employing eight staff including four landscapers and two registered builders. “We have a dedicated team who are focused on delivering a premium result,” says Roger. “We care about what we do and we enjoy doing it.
