From first timer to seasoned pro, you can enjoy hundreds of kilometres of scenic trails for free.

None us are at peak fitness all the time so it makes sense to take advantage of the technology to make the hill climbs more enjoyable.

The new electric or ‘e’ mountain bikes deliver up to 80 newton metres of torque meaning you pedal lightly and they do most of the hard work.

For most rail trail riding a hard tail is fine but if you encounter steeper rougher terrain your rear end will really love you to invest in a full suspension e-bike to soften those bumps and jumps.

You can access the fabulous new trails of the Waitangi Mountain Bike Park opened last year or tackle the rail trail from Opua to the west coast.

treasure trove home to glow worm caves, local Ma¯ori artists, craft shops, food and coffee. It is famous for its toilets designed by Hundertwasser and the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway’s steam train Gabriel. On to Kaikohe, the highest point on the trail.

The main local attraction is heritage.

Kaikohe, including a pioneer village with restored historic buildings, Ma¯ori artefacts, gumdigging equipment and a blacksmith’s shop. Not far from Kaikohe are the hot pools at Ngawha Springs.

Okaihau is a friendly country town with a cafe´ serving homemade delicacies and it’s special claim to fame is a fire service museum (located in the nearby Waihou Valley).

● overnight spot for multi-day riders keen to explore the entire 140km of trail. On across the fertile Hauraki Plains, past the rural town of Ngatea to Kopu, at the foot of the Coromandel Ranges. Here you can admire the historic single-lane swing bridge next to the sleek modern structure spanning the Waihou River, an important route for transport in the past times. A branch left takes you a mere flat 7km to Thames. Thames has retained a wealth of historical buildings from the gold-mining days.

The trail continues south, following old railway lines on to the historic goldmining towns of Paeroa, Te Aroha, and Waihi.

At Paeroa, the trail forks, and the dramatic eastern section through the Karangahake Gorge to Waihi is home

to some of the country’s most scenic and interesting walks.

If you run out of steam on this section you can always climb aboard the historic Goldfields Train, which runs twice daily from Waikino to Waihi, and transports bikes too.

WAIKATO RIVER TRAILS There are few better places for cycling than the banks of the mighty Waikato River. From native forest and birdlife to hydro dams, suspension bridges and exhilarating downhills, there’s plenty for mountain bikers to enjoy.

The 100km of off-road trails take in five lakes, five hydro dams and several small towns and villages, showcasing some of the best of the Waikato heartland.

IGHTSEEING by bike on the Hauraki Rail Trail is one of the best ways to appreciate the diverse land and seascapes of the southern part of the Coromandel.

It is the flattest and easiest cycle trail in the country, and with its close proximity to Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga, it is readily accessed. The four leg ride can be completed in a leisurely three to four days, and accommodation, advice, bike hire and shuttle transport are available along the way. The trail also gets you up close to some unique natural highlights and relics of the region’s gold heritage.

A

trip to the Hamilton and Waikato region isn’t complete without a few days spent exploring by bike.

There are hundreds of kilometres of trail to discover, along with three of the country’s ‘Great Rides’, offering cyclists a close-up look at the region’s picturesque scenery and fascinating past.

Whether hurtling down forest-clad hills or meandering alongside winding rivers and through rolling farmland, the region’s tracks and trails offer memorable experiences for riders of all fitness and skill levels.

Laid-back riders and family groups will love the sights of the Hauraki Rail Trail which takes in both rural and goldmining history along the way.

Cyclists including the township of Te Aroha as part of their Hauraki Rail Trail journey can also enjoy the geothermal wonders of the natural mineral spas to sooth aching muscles.

Te Awa — The Great New Zealand River Ride offers great views of the mighty Waikato River as in both Hamilton City, and Lake Karapiro near Cambridge. The wide concrete path is perfect for family groups looking for an easy ride.

More serious riders will enjoy the challenge of the Timber Trail, which follows and old logging tramway through the Pureora Forest Park for 85km of varied riding while the rugged Waikato River Trails offers excitement

for keen mountain bikers and families of intermediate riding ability with impressive swing bridges, hydro dams and plenty of hidden gems.

There are shorter rides to enjoy too — from mountain biking on Mount Te Aroha and in the Cougar Mountain Bike Park near Tokoroa to urban adventures on Hamilton’s riverside cycling and walking paths or at the compact, off-road Hamilton Mountain Bike Track, also known as Pukete Mountain Bike Park.

Other mountain bike parks such as Te Miro, north east of Cambridge, and those found around the base of Mt Pirongia are also growing in popularity, providing both advanced and beginner tracks, whilst Raglan boast several trails including the

Pipiwharauroa Trail which will get riders up close and personal with the giant wind turbines of the Te Uku Windfarm.

Raglan is also home to the region’s newest trail, Te Ara Kakariki, which opened in December 2016 and overlooks the township’s famous surf beaches.

Young kids are also catered for with the Gallagher Bike Skills Park located outside the Avantidrome, New Zealand’s Home of Cycling, just north of Cambridge. This great little park is the perfect place for children to learn basic cycling and road biking skills in a safe environment.

Great cafes can be found nearby many of the trails, providing a great spot to refuel during your ride, while

lodge style accommodation, bike hire and shuttle services are also available around most of the region’s major trails.

Hamilton city offers the perfect location for cyclists looking to base themselves somewhere central and ride more than one trail. Many of the accommodation providers are bikefriendly with Novotel Tainui Hamilton and Hamilton Gardens both offering a bike hire option for making the most of the inner-city river trails. There are plenty of dining and entertainment options on offer after the day’s ride is done as well as a myriad of other activities and attractions in the city and wider region including Hobbiton Movie Set and Waitomo Caves to round out a short escape or family weekend away.

HAKATANE is fast getting a name as an excellent base to mix cycling with other holiday pursuits — on land

and sea.

The upbeat eastern Bay of Plenty town is just 40 minutes’ drive from the start of the Motu Trails Great Ride and 75 minutes from the Moerangi and Whirinaki tracks.

Onepu Recreation Park is barely 20 minutes away.

At the same time, on a breakaway based in Whakatane, you’re ideally placed for a host of stunning natural and cultural activities as well as riding.

A visit to volcanic White Island (Whakaari) is truly remarkable, while the forested bird-haven of Whale Island (Moutohora) is special in an altogether different way.

Experience Mataatua’s resounding ‘legends carved in light’ show; and take a journey of sacred sites, culture and cuisine, with NATIVConnectioNZ. You can kayak, paddleboard, surf, fish or take a charter yacht. You can sit on the sand or go for a trail run on the sublime Nga Tapuwae o Toi track, which roams the forest and coast between Whakatane and Ohope.

Then, decide your next day of biking!

You’ll find a great cycle cruise right in the heart of Whakatane. The Warren Cole trail runs 4.5km beside the Whakatane river. This is a very popular ride for locals and visitors alike, passing by saltmarsh, wharves and the i-SITE, which conveniently has hire bikes.

Several other rides are handy from town. The sealed roads alongside Ohope beach and Ohiwa Harbour make great cruising, with hire bikes from Port

Ohope General Store & Cafe. Also from Ohope, a neat 9km loop takes in the gravel of historic Burma Rd, which was first surveyed in the 1870s and today passes through forest roamed by wild kiwi.

The other end of Burma Rd rises over a farmland ridge and links to Rawhiti Forest in the high hills behind Ohope.

Here, you will discover purpose-built trails to challenge even sturdy legs (a $5 permit is required).

With the epic adventures of Moerangi, Whirinaki and Motu trails within reach, you can head out not-tooearly in the morning, hit the trails for

the day, then return to Whakatane and relax with quality dining and accommodation.

Whirinaki Forest Track is a super choice if you’re with family or more recreational riders. This purpose-built trail is 16km of easy riding, with options to further cut distance. The forest is sensational.

The Dunes Trail section of the Motu Trails is also family friendly, with heaps of opportunity for beach time.

You can make a bigger day of riding the Motu Trails by heading to the Pakihi Track, rated by singletracks.com as one of New Zealand’s top-12 MTB tracks.

Through much of the year, you can even do a Motu Trails weekend package with Air Chathams, flying down from Auckland on their historic DC3 and riding the trails, with all accommodation and transfers included (airchathams.co.nz).

Motu Trails

YCLING along Opotiki’s Dunes Trail, you can’t help but be impressed by the huge sweep of the coastline.

On a fine day, you look out over the ocean to Moutohora (Whale island) and Whakaari (White Island). The East Cape ranges fade back, layer by hazy layer.

You have up to 10km of coastal riding — plus 10km return. The trail is gravel, rising up and down the dunes almost the whole way. In the summer peak, it’s busy, but much of the year, there’s ample space to take in the natural splendor.

The Dunes Trail is one of three sections making up the Motu Trails, one of the 22 Great Rides on Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail. The other two sections are very different.

The Motu Road Trail starts from the top end of the Dunes Trail, heading inland 65km to Matawai and reaching a highpoint of almost 800m. This is a challenging, fantastic ride with a century of history — the original road to link between Opotiki and Gisborne, and for many years the highlight stage of the Rally of New Zealand.

Many cycle groups start at Matawai (altitude 500m) or Motu settlement and head down to Opotiki, often splitting their trip for the night at Toatoa Farmstay (toatoaaccommodation.co.nz).

At Motu, Motu-vation Cafe´ and Store is in the settlement’s original store and post office, while round the corner there’s friendly accommodation ideal for groups at Motu Community House (both listed at motutrails.co.nz/service-providers).

From Motu, it’s well worth making the short side trip to Whinray Scenic Reserve and Motu Falls, where the first bridge over the Motu River was built in 1876.

The third section of the Motu Trails is the Pakihi Track, which starts high in the forested Motu Rd. This is a remarkable 21km single-track journey through

Cycle or walk the beautiful new MotuTrail network which starts at the wharf next to our Holiday Park, and continues round the stopbank and across the new Pakowhai ki Otutaopuku bridge to Snell beach, where you can stop for a dip, or walk a little further for an Ice Cream atTheTirohanga General Store.

Alternatively follow the easy Dunes trail, which leads on to the old Motu Coach road and Pakihi track (for the more experienced riders andTrampers).

sensational wilderness and alongside the Pakihi stream, followed by gravel and country road back to Opotiki.

Many groups get a shuttle drop-off to the highpoint of the Motu Rd, from where it’s almost all downhill to the top of the Pakihi (600m altitude) and the track-end (less than 100m altitude). The track is not particularly technical, but it’s rated advanced due to steep drop-offs beside the track. It’s definitely not a ride to rush anyway, a remarkable, lush environment with a good chance of encountering birds from kereru to weka, and if you’re lucky, whio (blue duck) and karearea (New Zealand falcon).

If you’re fit and game, you can ride the 90km Motu Trails Loop in one day — Dunes Trail, up the Motu Rd to the Pakihi Track, and back down the Pakihi. That’s a big day though! Many riders take two days, stopping overnight at Toatoa Farmstay.

At Matawai, the southern entrance of Motu Trails links to Rere Falls Trail, which is an excellent New Zealand Cycle Trail ‘Heartland Ride’ stretching on to Gisborne (see Eastland page).

From Opotiki, two companies offer experienced shuttle transport and bike hire: Motu Trails Hire & Shuttle (hireandshuttle.co.nz) and Motu Trails Limited (motucycletrails.com). Both are quality providers and can help you enjoy the best Motu Trails experience.

From Gisborne, Cycle Gisborne offers bike hire and tours. If you’re seeking a full-service guided group tour, on Motu Trails or around Eastland, talk to Cycle Gisborne.

ROM heartland roads to fun forest trails and easy coastal cruising, the Eastland region has many reasons to bring a bike.

A good place to start is gravel/ backcountry road riding — surging in popularity around the world. Eastland has several choices, highlighted by the Rere Falls Trail, which is a Heartland Ride on the New Zealand Cycle Trail.

The Rere Falls Trail follows a backcountry route between Matawai and Gisborne. It includes about 25km of gravel roads, has some grunty hills and, at Matawai, links to the Motu Trails.

You can ride Rere Falls Trail in either direction of course, but from Matawai you’re soon onto Te Wera Rd and Wharekopae Rd, heading for Rere Rockslide and Rere Falls.

Rere Rockslide is a 60-metre natural slide on the Wharekopae River, a great little adrenalin rush for those who love a buzz — and sure entertainment for those watching. From the rockslide, you have a short ride to the Rere Falls and picnic area, then a few small climbs before reaching Eastwoodhill Arboretum.

Eastwoodhill (eastwoodhill.org.nz) is a must-stop, the national arboretum of New Zealand, with more than 3500 northern hemisphere species and many kilometres of walking trails. They have accommodation and this is a popular place to split Rere Falls Trail into a twoday bike ride.

Across the region, Cycle Gisborne (cyclegisborne.com) offers a range of excellent cycle tour and hire options.

Their one-day Eastwoodhill Express ride is an easy way to experience Eastwoodhill then pedal easily on to Gisborne. After an exhilarating descent of Ngatapa Hill, you visit awardwinning wineries and then meander the Poverty Bay flats, discovering the wealth of produce and flavours of this popular aromatic wine region.

At Matawhero, not far from Gisborne, the Rere Falls Trail route passes close to The Jolly Stockman hotel (jollystockman.co.nz), which up on the roof has the country’s biggest New Zealand Cycle Trail logo. They’re proud Motu Trails official partners and offer friendly accommodation and tasty meals.

If you’re more into easy cycle cruising, you have several options — all of them short, paved, and pretty.

Near town, the Oneroa cycle and walkway overlooks Waikanae beach and has artwork and carvings. The Muriel Jones Kaiti to Wainui Cycleway, and the Alfred Cox Cycle and Walkway are also relaxing jaunts in this sunshine heartland.

If you’re seeking off-road mountain bike trails, head 10km from Gisborne up Waimata Valley Road to Mander Road, where Gisborne MTB club has about 15km of trails on forestry land with everything from family-friendly to

Timber Trail & Mountains to Sea

XPERIENCE a giant’s eye-view and a glimpse into New Zealand history.

Timber Trail Snuggled in the Pureora Forest, west of Lake Taupo in the Central North Island, is the perfect choice for walkers and bikers looking to unwind and refresh the mind and body, as well as soaking in some New Zealand history.

Saved from logging by protesters in the late 1970s, this forest is now one of the most majestic and popular sites for intrepid locals and visitors.

Starting at Pureora Village, riders will experience the grandeur of the Pureora Forest, stumbling across fascinating sites such as old tramway lines and ancestral Maori land.

If heights don’t faze you, a highlight of the trip will be the 55 metre high suspension bridge above the Maramahata Stream. Tick off a New Zealand landmark as you’re at it, as it happens to be the longest traversable suspension bridge in New Zealand.

The whole trail takes two days to cover, but you can pick and choose sections of the trail to suit your time frame and fitness level. There are various accommodation choices along the way, either on or off track. Take a look at the website to choose what’s best for you.

Mountains to Sea A true feast for the senses, the Mountains to Sea Trail offers a sumptuous variety of terrains for bikers of all levels to take in. The trail begins in the Tongariro National Park, offering views of Mount Ruapehu and forest scenery, and ends at the Whanganui Coastline.

The entire trail from Mountain to Sea takes from three to five days, but can still be enjoyed in smaller adventures, with many options for day trips with the family. A gentle option for taking little ones is the level 2

15km Old Coach Rd trail from Horopito to Ohakune.

For more advanced riders, the iconic Mangapurua is well-worth ticking off the list.

This 36km, level 3 track leads through Whanganui National Park, and most excitingly, over the Bridge to Nowhere, towering over dizzying ravines. Not only does this track wow visitors with natural history, but it also offers a precious glimpse into the past, as it is the settlement site of returned World War I soldiers who made a home there in 1917.

The final leg of the trip takes you from natural forest to modern city, with a jaunt through the artistic town of Whanganui. A most rewarding finale to the ride is the sparkling Tasman Sea vista.

This part of the trip can be done as a quick two hour jaunt, starting from the village of Upokongaro (where there’s a great pub ready to welcome adventurers!).

HANGANUI would have to be one of the greatest places to cycle in New Zealand. With mainly flat areas around the city and hilly areas into the suburbs you can cycle from town to the beach and along the river boardwalks. Great for a family outing or even a little competition amongst friends. There are plenty of cafe´s, studios and galleries to visit as you cycle by or at the end of the day to relax and have a cool beverage.

Easy cycle rides can be had around the city, mountain biking for the adventurous and the family around two coastal dune lakes — Lake Wiritoa and Lake Pauri, plus other more demanding tracks. The Whanganui River Rd and route to Whanganui is part of the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail — the most diverse in the country. Many may have ridden the Ohakune sections but the trail is not complete unless you finish at the Tasman Sea. From Pipiriki it is an 87km ride to the coast and well worth the experience. The road is abundant with history and early Ma¯ori and European culture alongside the most navigable river in the country. Don’t pass Jerusalem (Hiruha¯rama) without stopping — Suzanne Aubert, better known as Mother Mary Joseph, established the congregation of the Sisters of Compassion in 1892 and the Foundling Home in 1886 which housed and cared for abandoned children from around New Zealand at that time. The convent and Sisters of Compassion still reside there and guests are welcome to visit the grounds and church.

Visit the atmospheric and beautiful Ranana Marae (always ask permission first) and the Kawana Flour Mill. The mill was constructed in 1854 and now shows the original waterwheel and grinding stones. Matahiwi is the next stop, where a building was transported by riverboat in 1923 to be used as the local school for many years. Today it is a cafe´ and gallery open to visitors and you’ll also see the old riverboat, the Riverboat Queen used in the movie of the same name.

awke’s Bay is a region of diverse and magnificent landscapes, from mountains and hill country to inland and coastal plains, occupying about 14,000 square kilometres on the eastern side of New Zealand’s North Island.

From Mahia in the north to Porongahau in the south, Hawke’s Bay’s 360km of coastline and beaches border the Pacific Ocean.

STEP BACK IN TIME Hawke’s Bay is internationally regarded among Art Deco enthusiasts the world over for its distinct architecture. In 1931 the Hawke’s Bay Earthquake destroyed much of the cities of Napier and Hastings. What resulted was a region rebuilt in the Art Deco style which was the architecture of the period. Napier today has 140 original Art Deco buildings, while Hastings has a similar number in the

Rimutaka Cycle Trail

FOLLOW THE OCEAN: Follow the spectacular Pacific Ocean coastline between Ocean Beach and Orongorongo.

IDE a quintessential Kiwi ride featuring all types of New Zealand landscape: a river valley, bush-clad mountains, lakesides, farmland and a spectacular coast. The Rimutaka Cycle Trail is right on Wellington’s doorstep and offers you the perfect opportunity to mix riding with culture, cuisine and shopping in and around our capital city.

Beginning on Petone’s foreshore, you can access the 115km trail by catching the train from Wellington Railway Station and cycling to the start point at the wharf. Nearby Jackson St, a popular and picturesque boulevard of boutiques, cafe´s, bars and restaurants, is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat and a locally roasted coffee before hitting the trail.

Head north alongside the Hutt River on a well-defined cycle path, before heading through the Rimutaka Ranges and tunnels via the historic railway route and enter the Wairarapa Valley at Cross Creek.

You have a choice of turning left and following the 9km off-road limestone trail to Featherston where you can refuel and even learn about the trail you’ve just been on at The Fell Locomotive Museum or you can turn right and head south, following the shoreline of Lake Wairarapa. The road weaves through rolling countryside, past historic farms many of which offer accommodation and past the turn-off to Wharekauhau Luxury Lodge where you’re also welcome to stay the night.

The trail heads back to Wellington around the Pacific Ocean coastline from Ocean Beach and you’re rewarded with views across Cook Strait to the snowcapped mountains behind Kaikoura before finishing at Orongorongo. This section crosses a remote, rugged and wildly beautiful landscape not accessible before the cycle trail came through.

Here you can be met by Cycle Rimutaka or Green Jersey Cycle Tours which offer a range of guided or supported tours. They’ll pick you and drop you up at the Wainuiomata Coast Rd car park or you can carry on exploring more outdoor adventure activities in Wainuiomata and beyond.

One of the best aspects of the trail is its multiple access points, meaning you can tailor your trail ride to suit your riding appetite and fitness level. You can ride it in one day or cruise the trail over two, three or four days, allowing time for side trips to the wine village of Martinborough, the pretty colonial township of Greytown or out to NZ’s first lighthouse at Pencarrow.
