Welcome to Parenting! T
Inside Baby Showers
hat age, from newborn to five, is often said to be the most magical part of parenthood.
You get to watch your bundle of joy grow from a tiny baby into a high-spirited preschooler. He or she is constantly growing, learning and enthralled with life. In this publication, Newborn 2 Five, we have put together advice, combined with sound research, to help parents along the way. You will find helpful information and tips on budgeting, maternity care, feeding, baby sleep, and more. Newborn 2 Five provides you with activity options for preschoolers in the Bay of Plenty as well as positive parenting tips and early childhood education (ECE) options. There is a huge range of ECE choices in the Western Bay of Plenty and throughout the middle of this publication some local childcare options are highlighted. Keep this book as a useful reference. We hope it helps contribute to the immense delight your children will bring you. Remember that you are not going to get it right all the time, but make sure you enjoy the journey.

Baby Showers B
aby showers are a great chance for new mums, close friends and family to get together and celebrate the impending arrival. Showers can be as simple or as elaborate as you like, and friends and family are usually only too happy to leave their serious hats at the door, and try out some silly games. Here are five fun baby shower games to try:
1. Game: Bottle Races What you need: Baby bottle for each guest filled with a drink How to play: Each guest takes a bottle and drinks as fast as possible. The one who finishes first wins a prize.
2. Game: Dirty Nappies What you need: A variety of chocolates (dark, white, nutty, caramel), newborn nappies How to play: Place melted chocolate in nappies and have each guest examine and smell the nappies to guess which type of chocolate is in each nappy. Make sure to number the nappies to keep track of which nappy has what type of chocolate in it. The person with the best nose for ‘number twos’ wins.

3. Game: Guess the Baby Pictures What you need: Baby photos of all the guests (ask guests to bring this in their invitations) How to play: Hang up the photos at the party and have guests guess which photo belongs to who. Alternative: Use photos of celebrity babies and guests guess who the celebrity mother is.
4. Game: Guess the Mother’s Measurements What you need: A ball of string or wool, scissors How to play: Pass around a ball of string and a pair of scissors. Ask each guest to cut a length of string that they think will fit around the expectant mum’s belly. The winner is the person closest to the actual belly circumference, at belly-button height around the mother.
5. Game: Taste Test What you need: 6-12 jars of baby food with labels removed, permanent marker, spoons How to play: Number each baby food jar, ask guests to grab a spoon and start sampling. The guest with the keenest taste buds wins a prize for getting the most correct.

Call the Midwife! N
ew Zealand women have free access to professional maternity care from a Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) from early pregnancy right through until four to six weeks after the baby’s birth. Lead Maternity Carers can be midwives, general practitioners (GP) or obstetricians.
Most women choose an independent midwife as their LMC. Midwives usually work with their midwife partners in small group practices. To practise as a midwife in New Zealand, a midwife must have an annual practising certificate issued by the Midwifery Council of New Zealand. Whoever you end up choosing as your midwife, they need to be someone who you feel you will develop a good rapport with and someone you trust completely. You will probably need to meet with a number of midwives to determine who the best fit is for you. As a starting point, you could get recommendations from friends or do a search on findyourmidwife.co.nz. Once booked or registered with a midwife, she will be responsible for your care throughout your pregnancy. She will undertake regular assessments of you and your growing baby’s wellbeing, refer you for a range of tests (such as blood tests and ultrasounds), and discuss the results with you. She will provide you with information about what to expect during pregnancy, labour and birth and the early weeks after your baby is born.
Options for birthing in Tauranga include at home, the Bethlehem Birthing Centre (if you have no complications during pregnancy) or at Tauranga Hospital.
Your midwife will work with you to make a plan for your labour and birth. New Zealand woman can choose to give birth either at home, in a small maternity unit (primary maternity facility) or a hospital maternity unit. Your midwife can provide labour and birth care in any setting. If you give birth in hospital, your midwife will work alongside the hospital midwives ensuring you receive the care you need.
The majority of women who birth at a maternity facility remain there for a few days after the birth, receiving assistance with feeding and caring for their baby. Your midwife will continue to provide care to you and your baby in your home for up to 6 weeks after the birth, then your care will be handed onto your GP and a Well Child service provider, such as Plunket.
5 topics to ask about when choosing your midwife: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Birth Philosophy (what is her view on labour and birth? Does it match with yours?) Experience (how long has she been practising as a midwife?) Prenatal Care (how often does she need to meet with you?) Labour and Birth (who is her backup and do you get to meet them before the birth?) Postnatal Care (how often will she visit you after the birth?)

Good maternal nutrition is important for preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding. Introducing partial bottle-feeding could negatively affect breastfeeding and reversing a decision not to breastfeed may be difficult. Those First Few Weeks A
newborn baby in the house can be a real shock to the system and many new parents find this a trying time. It is hard to believe the sheer amount of work involved, the relentless lack of sleep and the constant worrying if you’re ‘doing it right’.
Then there is the crying. You find yourself going through a checklist in your head many times a day. Is he/she hungry? Tired? Hot? Wet? You may find it handy to keep track of feeds and sleep to figure out your baby’s routine, so when baby cries, you may have a fair idea why. Nowadays, there are lots of useful online apps available to help with this, but pen and paper work just as well. Here are some things to think about before bub comes home:
Sleep (or Lack of)
During pregnancy, many people will say ‘you’ll never sleep again’. While not entirely true, you should expect significant disruption to your sleep. Those first few weeks with a newborn at home, are an eye-opening experience. Survival Technique: Rest or do something relaxing when the baby naps during the day. Even a 20-minute power nap will help perk you up for the rest of the day.
Don’t try to be Supermum
Housework should take a backseat when you have a baby. Now is the time to enlist family or friends you trust to help.
Remember the saying: ‘It takes a whole village to raise a child.’ This is the time to get the village involved. Survival Technique: Plan ahead during your pregnancy and stock your freezer with ready meals. If you can afford a cleaner in the first six weeks it is well worth it.
Happy Mum, Happy Baby
The physical recovery from giving birth, the sleep deprivation, along with the realisation you are now responsible for another human can throw you through for a loop. Survival Technique: A short walk, coffee with a friend, or even a relaxing bath will help boost energy levels and do you the world of good.
Adding a Toddler to the Mix
For some of you, this is your second (third, fourth…) time around. And you have a toddler to look after too. Many parents find the jump to two children, as much of (if not more than) a shock to the system as your first one. Survival Technique: Have a few ‘special’ story books, snacks or toys to occupy your toddler while baby is feeding. Many ‘second time’ mums also find baby wearing comes in very handy, as baby is close but you are hands-free and able to get out and do things with your toddler. Remember, things do get easier as babies grow into toddlers and you become an expert in figuring out their needs. A popular mantra among new parents is ‘This too shall pass’.
Feeding Time Skin to Skin
Your newborn baby should be placed straight onto your bare chest as soon as they are born. This skin-to-skin contact with you is good for your baby’s physical health and encourages your baby to breastfeed. An alert baby’s natural instincts help them to locate, latch on, and breastfeed. Your midwife will be there to help you.
The First Milk
Colostrum is the first milk that your baby gets. This special milk is yellow in colour and is thick and sticky. Colostrum protects baby from infections and gives your baby their first food. When your baby is breastfed early and often, your breasts will produce mature milk around the third or fourth day after birth. Your milk will then increase in volume and will generally appear thinner and whiter in colour. You will not run out of milk – the more you feed your baby, the more milk your breasts will make.
Formula Feeding
For a variety of reasons, there are mums who cannot breastfeed. Others choose to supplement breastfeeding with formula, or simply choose to formula feed. There are lots of infant formula options available. Talk to your midwife or GP about choosing the best formula option for your baby. Bottle-fed babies cannot control their milk intake in like breastfed babies can. This means they may take larger

amounts of formula milk. Look for signs your baby has had enough, such as slowing down or resting. These pauses give your baby time to feel whether they’re full.
Baby’s Hunger
It is important in the first few days that your baby feeds whenever they need to. New babies need to feed about 8–12 times every 24 hours. This means you will need to feed your baby during the night. Some days your baby will need more feeds. Babies show hunger signs when they are ready for a feed. Common hunger signs include the following: Early Signs • Smacking or licking lips • Opening and closing mouth • Sucking on lips, tongue, hands, fingers, toes, toys, or clothing Active Signs • Rooting around on the chest of whoever is carrying him • Trying to position for nursing, either by lying back or pulling on your clothes • Fidgeting or squirming around a lot • Hitting you on the arm or chest repeatedly • Fussing or breathing fast Late Signs (Calm Baby before Feeding) • Moving head frantically from side to side • Crying

Liz van Welie Aquatics is passionate about people learning to swim, especially working with parents and their babies. When you have done the research and learning we’ve done there is a very real purpose to our lessons, helping parents to understand what their child is learning, progressing towards toddlers and preschool age being independent in the water and on to being competent swimmers for life in our purpose built aquatic centre.
Learning to swim at an early age is so important: ‘It has been reported that within the first years of childhood, approximately 90% of the neural pathways in the brain will be set for life. Those pathways determine how a child thinks and learns, but more importantly, they will shape who they become through the neural network built by their earliest physical and sensory experiences.’ A Moving Child is a Learning Child Gill Connell and Cheryl McCarthy Research supports additional benefits from learning to swim: “Children were anywhere from 6 to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions. On average, swimming children were 11 months ahead of the population in oral expression, 6 months ahead in mathematics reasoning and 2 months ahead in brief reading.” Professor Robyn Jorgensen Griffith University

Sleep Tips
F
or many parents there’s nothing more peaceful than a sleeping baby. However, getting your baby to that point (and staying there) is a challenge every new parent faces. You do not have to go through parenthood exhausted and sleep deprived. There are a number of things that contribute to your baby’s sleep pattern or habits. If you want to make changes to your baby’s night time sleep then here are some things you will need to consider:
Naps – if nap timings or lengths vary, then this inconsistency makes it hard to develop consistency at night. A regular nap pattern can help a baby learn what to expect and to settle to sleep more easily. You need to offer enough day time sleep as overtiredness from short naps, or not enough naps, contributes to night time issues. Settling to sleep – does your baby require help to settle to sleep? If they need your help to settle at the start of sleep, then they will probably wake again after one sleep cycle (45-50 mins during the day or 2-4 hours at night) because they need your help to resettle again. Try to gradually back off assisting them to sleep, which could be rocking or feeding until drowsy, and work towards them going down more awake so that they can attempt to settle themselves to sleep. Hunger – does your baby wakes at 10pm, 3am and start the day at 7am? Do they have a full feed at 7am? If yes, then they probably still need the 3am feed. If no, then you can probably wean from the 3am feed. If they are over 4kg, wake every 2 hours and demand to be fed then they are more likely using it to help them resettle rather than hunger. Sleep environment - is your baby’s room warm enough? Is it quiet? For young babies, are they swaddled? Is it dark?
Timing - is bedtime early enough? A bedtime before 7pm works well for most babies to avoid overtiredness. There are no rights or wrongs with baby sleep. You should do what works for you and your family. Do not rush to change things if you don’t feel that you have a problem.
Ending the Dummy Run A
a fabric comforter, preferably a breathable cotton fabric like muslin, and no larger than 30cmx30cm (so that it is safe to have in the cot).
Why is this happening?
To help your baby to learn how to replace their dummy you can use the steps below: 1. Place the dummy in their hand and guide it to their mouth for 2-3 days 2. Place the dummy in their hand so that they can put it in themselves for 2-3 days 3. Place the dummy on the mattress beside them and pat the mattress to indicate where it is, so they can reach over and grab it for themselves
What can we do about it?
Use this method at the start of sleep and if you need to go and see them during the night.
dummy can often be a great sleep tool in the first few months of a baby’s life, and can even be a life saver for parents! But as a baby gets older, it can start to create problems rather than solving them. If you find that your baby settles well at the start sleep but then wakes after one sleep cycle, 40-50 mins during the day or 2-4 hours at night, then the dummy could be part of your problem. Your baby loves their dummy. So much so that when they go to sleep with it, but wake later to find that it is no longer there, they miss it and want it back again. The problem is that they don’t know how to replace it by themselves. From 7-8 months of age you can teach them to find and replace their own dummy. By teaching them control of their dummy, they will be more likely to replace it themselves when they wake and then resettle without needing your assistance.
How?
It will be much easier for your baby to find and replace their own dummy if it is attached to something like a ‘sleepytot’ or
Some babies can learn this from a slightly younger age than 7-8 months, so feel free to give it a go but don’t feel too discouraged if it doesn’t work, just try again in a few weeks. Childcare Options I
t can be hard to know where to start when choosing an early childhood education (ECE) service for your child, but it is important to choose one that supports your child so that they can be safe and nurtured, as well as join in and learn alongside other children.
What types of ECE services are available?
There are all sorts of ECE services available in New Zealand all offering different services including:
education and care centres home based education and care kindergartens Kohanga Reo Montessori playcentres Steiner kindergartens Te Kura (the correspondence school)
How do I choose the service that’s right for my child?
With so many different types of services available, it may be hard to choose the best one for you and your child. It might help to think about what will work best for you and your child and what is important to you both. You could consider: The kind of service you want – do you want home based care or a larger daycare centre?
14
Newborn 2 Five
The location of the service – do you want it close to your home or workplace? How long you want your child to attend – do you need flexible hours? You and your child’s needs – do you want to attend with your child? Opening times – do they run through the school holidays? Structure – is the emphasis on free play or is it more structured? The fees you can afford To find an ECE service in your area go to https://parents.education.govt.nz/essential-information/findan-ece-service-or-school/.
Costs
Childcare will be one of the biggest expenses if you return to work after having a baby. Costs and conditions vary widely among childcare centres so it pays to shop around. Work and Income have a Childcare Subsidy to help cover the cost of preschool childcare for low to middle income families. To see if you are eligible, go to https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/products/a-z-benefits/ childcare-subsidy.html. The government also subsidises all children over the age of 3 years, who attend ECE with ‘20 Hours ECE’. The cost can be fully subsidised for up to 6 hours a day and up to 20 hours a week.

JeMMa’s Homecare “M
y grandchildren are the love of my life.” Lilly speaks about her experience. “I started with JeMMa’s in 2013 as an Educarer only receiving WINZ money, my girls were single parents and young - I told them to get a qualification while I look after their children, I wanted to help.” “Being able to be with my grandchildren is the best part about what I do, having grandchildren is awesome - well spending time with them is even better.” “Working for JeMMa’s has opened up a lot more things to do like playgroups and art classes, the pools and the gym, we go to the parks and music is another thing we do. I’m starting Playcentre with them as well; it’s about giving them as many opportunities as I can.”
“Under JeMMa’s Grandparent Programme I am able to go out with the children. JeMMa’s money allows me to put petrol in my car and go out for the day with my grandchildren, it’s awesome. For me it’s not about the money it’s about my grandchildren.” “It’s an awesome programme; it would be nice if more grandparents did it.” You could be paid to have your Grandchildren during the day. Call anytime if you are interested in finding out the details on how to earn money while looking after your grandchildren using JeMMa’s Grandparent Programme. 0800 JEMMAS (536627)

Fern Garden Preschool A
multi-award winning group of childcare centres was founded right here with our very own Fern Garden Preschool. Husband and wife owners Nikeeta and Dr. Darius Singh, with three generations of teaching history in both their families, have a single (and simple) vision: “…to give children more amazing experiences and opportunities that we ever had…”, starting right here.
In 2017 Being in a leadership position, Fern Garden is once again transforming its centre environment to achieve stunning ‘wow’ factors as designed by award winning architects and of course the dedicated leadership team and teachers at the centre. This will all be revealed with a launch in August 2017 and is set to raise the bar (again) in innovative learning and teaching spaces.
In 2011, they embarked on a journey in Tauranga to deliver on their vision and promise to our communities. Their first national award came after their first year of operations with their patented invention of an online learning system which helps parents and teacher’s visualise and discuss children’s strengths, interests and opportunities faster than ever before. Fern Garden’s invention took out the top innovation award by the NZ Early Childhood Council and was presented by the Hon. Hekia Parata, Minister of Education.
2013 - 2015 After winning several national awards for their centres inspired by Fern Garden’s philosophy of sustainability and innovation, the group made FINALIST for two categories in the Westpac Business Excellence Awards: ‘Excellence in Innovation’ and ‘Excellence in Business Leadership’, and they WON ‘Best Emerging Business’.
“Fern Garden will always be like our first baby and be our proudest achievement. This is where we started our vision to lift aspirations and hope for all children and families – especially those who are struggling”, says Nikeeta. “To have come so far in a few short years, with a national award each year is mind blowing, but very humbling, and we feel so blessed that all these accolades are going straight into our children’s experiences every day at the centre that the Ministry of Education, ERO, awards judging panels, parents and most importantly, our children, can all see”. Call the team on (07) 576 1976, fill out an enquiry form on the website www.chrysliscare.co.nz, or pop in anytime for a tour to see ‘childcare like you’ve never seen before’.
It’s no wonder that the last 6 years has been an exciting journey for the proud owners and teaching team, and even more so to see Fern Garden play such a lead role in the growth.
