Bream Bay: Where White Sands,
Beaches and a calmer lifestyle are among the drawcards luring many people to Bream Bay over summer. Ruakākā, with a population of about 2800, is known for its long, white-sand beach and relaxed atmosphere.
Calm Living and Community Shine
L
ocal Fresh Choice co-owner Grant Egan says the township is a place where everyone knows everyone.
“There’s a lot of locals who are here and have been here for a long time,” he said. Egan purchased the business about 10 years ago and lives right by the beach. Locals aren’t the only customers at Fresh Choice – the shop services people from Waipu through to Maungakaramea.

One Tree Point Joss Evans and Ken Foote took a leap of faith when they moved two years ago to Northland. Photo / Brodie Stone
“I know over the summer period, the holidaymakers come here for the ishing, the beaches and all that sort of thing [but] I think that people come to live here because it’s out of the city,” he said. “Everything’s here, you don’t need to go to town to get anything.” Egan said the township had been quiet this year, like a lot of other places but he thought 2026 was going to be a good year. One Tree Point residents Joss Evans and Ken Foote were running errands at Ruakākā Town Centre when they spoke to the Northern Advocate.
They’re sleeping better and have downsized.
“The beaches are quite close, it’s a 30-minute drive, so not far to go,” they said.
Moving into 2026, the pair were keen for the community to be more informed about the developments happening around them.
Two Birds cafe director Jaspreet Singh recently sold the business but was staying on to train the new owners.
“If you’re informed about what’s going on, you can process it yourself,” Evans said.
“From my perspective, this area is really quiet and nice. You won’t see any .... rush or crowds,” he said.
Whangārei resident Peter O’Donnell was enjoying the sun at Ruakākā Beach when approached by the Northern Advocate. He tried to visit the spot at least once per month. “It’s good for the soul.”
The pair moved to Waipu Cove about two years ago from Auckland, wanting to escape the rat race and improve their quality of life.
Having lived in Whangārei since the 1980s, he would often camp at Uretiti Beach with his family.
“It was a leap of faith,” Evans said.
“We’ve always been out this way, camping and ishing,” he said.
Foote grew up in Waipu and knew the area well. He said Waipu had experienced a lot of growth over the years. The couple made a second move, about six weeks ago, to One Tree Point saying it was “100% better” for them.
Two Birds Cafe director Jaspreet Singh is expecting a busy summer period. Photo / Brodie Stone
Customers were more commonly retirees but often changed to a younger crowd during the summer. Singh wanted Ruakākā and One Tree Point to receive more exposure in the year ahead. “Everybody is going to Whangārei,” he said. He wanted to see things like signs on the highway encouraging people to visit the town.
LOOKING FOR A QUALITY E-BIKE?
“It’s just the relaxation, the white sand, it’s never overcrowded.” Cousins Liv Huys and Alice Bland from Whangārei were also visiting the beach.

COMMUNITY AT THE HEART OF BREAM BAY A Ruakaka Surf Lifesaving Club lifeguard on patrol at Ruakaka Beach. Photo / Michael Cunningham
What truly makes Bream Bay special is not only the long beaches or the wide harbour, but the people who bring energy, warmth and commitment to this growing coastal region. Community spirit is woven into everyday life - from Waipū’s Scottish heritage events to the family-friendly gatherings at Ruakākā’s surf club, to the neighbourly networks that continue to strengthen in One Tree Point and Marden Point. Waipū: Tradition and Volunteer Power
Waipū, with its remarkable roots in the 19th-century Nova Scotian settlement, remains one of the most historically and culturally rich towns in all of Northland. Its historical signi icance is carefully preserved in its local museums and celebrated through vibrant cultural festivities. The annual Highland Games, a major regional draw, perfectly re lects the community’s strong sense of enduring place and pride in its unique ancestry. This township truly thrives through the tireless efforts of its dedicated local volunteers. These individuals form the backbone of local life, whether they are meticulously organising large-scale festivals, supporting crucial heritage and preservation projects, or actively building opportunities for youth through local sports initiatives and essential community groups. The dedication ensures that while the town grows, its rich story and
welcoming small-town charm remain intact for future generations. Moreover, the local school is often a hub, providing facilities and fostering events that draw people from the surrounding rural areas into the village centre, ensuring a continual cycle of engagement and support.
Ruakākā: Growth, Energy, and Coastal Safety
Further down the coast, Ruakākā’s signi icant and steady population expansion has introduced a palpable, renewed energy into local schools, various sports clubs, and vital community services. This growth has prompted an increase in local amenities while strengthening existing ones. The Ruakākā Surf Lifesaving Club plays a particularly pivotal, year-round role, not only carrying the crucial responsibility of keeping the popular beaches safe for residents and visitors throughout every summer season but also serving as an
COAST, COMMUNITY, CONNECTION essential pathway for local young people. It provides exceptional training, leadership development, and a powerful sense of purpose for aspiring young lifeguards, instilling in them a deep respect for the ocean and a dedication to service. Additionally, the nearby Ruakākā Recreation Centre stands as another signi icant community anchor. This modern facility hosts an expansive range of activities, covering everything from adult itness classes and yoga sessions to essential after-school programmes for children and even large-scale regional events and markets, ensuring there is a space for every member of the community to connect, learn, and grow.
One Tree Point and Marsden Point: The New Village Vibe
One Tree Point and Marsden Point are increasingly attractive destinations, drawing in a diverse mix of families, retirees seeking a peaceful coastal retirement, and remote workers who deeply value the relaxed lifestyle and robust, active neighbourhood atmosphere. The intentional growth here has encouraged an exciting proliferation of new local businesses, charming cafes, and talented artisan producers to set up shop locally. This dynamic in lux is helping the community to lourish economically while,
critically, providing high-quality jobs close to home, reducing the need for commuting. The development of new shared spaces, like local parks and accessible coastal walkways, has further fostered social interaction, turning these areas into true, integrated villages. There is an unmistakable sense of optimism and planning for the future here, driven by residents who are invested in seeing their surroundings develop thoughtfully and sustainably, always with a strong focus on maintaining the superb quality of life that irst drew them to the area.
The Essential Backbone of Volunteerism
Across the entire Bream Bay region, volunteers are, without question, the essential backbone of civic life. Their efforts span an incredibly wide and critical range— from the rapid-response local ire brigades and passionate coastal and environmental groups, to dedicated school committees, and various charitable and service organisations. Their work is often carried out quietly, without fanfare, yet it is absolutely essential to the region’s stability and health. This immense, shared investment of time and energy signi icantly strengthens local resilience, deepens connection, and ensures

that necessary services are maintained beyond what local government can provide alone. It is this pervasive culture of giving back that truly de ines Bream Bay’s social capital.
A Consistent Sense of Welcome
What truly stands out, perhaps above all else in Bream Bay, is the remarkable ease with which newcomers become fully integrated into the existing community story. The sense of welcome is strikingly consistent and heartfelt, regardless of
whether someone has lived in the area for four decades or only just arrived last summer. This embracing culture ensures that the region avoids the pitfalls of rapid development by actively integrating new faces and ideas. In a rapidly evolving and changing coastal region, the warm and resilient heart of Bream Bay remains its people—friendly, deeply forward-thinking, and unwaveringly committed to nurturing and sustaining a thriving, connected, and welcoming coastal community for everyone.

H
idden beneath the lush Northland hills near Waipu lies a glowing underworld born from passion, persistence, and respect for the land. Ian and Cindy Fox, the couple behind Waipu Caves Farm Park and the Milky Way Glowworm Cave, have spent years transforming a rugged 300-acre property into a sanctuary where conservation, adventure, and education intertwine. Adventure is woven into Ian’s DNA. After decades guiding people through caves, cliffs, and rivers, he turned his skills to

At the park, she leads school str camps and cave tours, helping visitors of all most intr ages build a deeper connection with the slo natural world. Visit By 2018, after 15 years in the nursery tour to th business, Ian was ready for a new challenge. “I was bored,” he admits with a grin. “I Cathedr wanted my own big conservation and Farm Par recreation project.” The property that explorer became Waipu Caves Farm Park wasn’t and num even on the market, but as seasoned cavers ClimbNZ familiar with its systems, Ian and Cindy knew its potential. From mu cathedr They purchased the 300-acre farm in a created m private sale, later selling small sections to the fund development and securing another 30 conserv acres to protect a second cave. Their goal together was clear: create a space where outdoor recreation could coexist with environmental protection. From that vision emerged one of Northland’s most enchanting natural attractions, the Milky Way Glowworm Cave. Once a cramped, muddy crawlspace, it has been transformed over ive painstaking years into a pristine, walk-in show cave. Visitors now descend 125 metres underground into the Milky Way Chamber, where thousands of glowworms shimmer like a night sky. Originally dubbed “Two Tone Cave” for its mix of greywacke loors and limestone walls, the restoration required clearing decades of debris, from collapsed silt to rusted farm relics, while safeguarding delicate formations and native fauna.
COAST, COMMUNITY, CONNECTION “Conservation costs money,” Ian says. “And conservation is about killing things.” He’s referring to the relentless battle against invasive pests such as pigs, goats, rats, and wasps. The effort has paid off: birdlife, insects, and glowworms are thriving once more. A new section, the StarBurst Cathedral, opens before Christmas, extending tours to 250 metres underground. The vast chamber, bristling with slender stalactites and crystal straws, showcases some of New Zealand’s most intricate cave formations, nature’s slow art sculpted drop by drop. Visitors can choose between a 35-minute tour to the Milky Way Chamber or a 70-minute journey to the StarBurst Cathedral. Above ground, Waipu Caves Farm Park offers its own playground for explorers, with three limestone crags and numerous boulders now listed on ClimbNZ. From muddy crawlspaces to glowing cathedrals, Ian and Cindy Fox have created more than a tourist attraction, they’ve built a testament to how vision, conservation, and community can thrive together under one luminous roof.

Unlocking rural subdivision opportunities in Northland Rural subdivision can be a practical way for you to add value to your land in Northland. Whether you’re subdividing your land to create an asset for your children, pay down the mortgage or create a lifestyle block, now is the time to understand your options.
R
ural subdivision is rarely a simple numbers exercise. Minimum lot sizes matter, but so do the realities on the ground. Things like topography, access, servicing, natural hazards, waterways and established vegetation can shape what is feasible and what will be supported through consent. A good outcome starts with understanding your site properly and designing with its strengths and constraints in mind. Working with Northland’s coastal and rural character Northland’s coastal and rural environments
add another layer to subdivision planning. Many properties include wetlands, estuaries, streams, or remnant bush. These features are worth protecting, and when well planned for, they can also add value. An environmental enhancement subdivision pathway typically involves ecological restoration alongside the creation of new lots. It is a practical route that helps protect what makes your land unique while adding future value. Coastal sites can add value through views and location, but they may also be restricted by coastal hazards that need specialist assessment before subdivision can proceed.
Planning rules are changing Rules are also shifting. With planning reform underway nationally and the new Kaipara District Plan and Far North District Plan moving forward, consent pathways for rural land will continue to evolve. That can mean new opportunities in some areas and tighter expectations in others. The key is to get clear, current advice early, so you understand what applies now and how to future-proof your options. Even if you are not ready to subdivide immediately, starting the conversation gives you time to plan for market timing and regulatory change.
The value of an integrated approach What makes the biggest difference is an integrated approach. Rural subdivision touches planning, surveying, engineering and ecology. When those disciplines work together from day one, you reduce delays, avoid rework, and get a clearer line of sight into cost, risk, and timelines. A Taste of Passion: The Story
Behind Olives on the Hill
Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Brynderwyns, just outside Mangawhai Heads, Olives on the Hill is more than just an olive grove, it’s a testament to family, community, and a deep connection to the land. interior, creating a tranquil ambiance for both olives and visitors alike. Today, approximately 700 olive trees stand tall across the Kingsview Estate. They produce consistently strong, fruity yields from the Frantoio variety and a more understated, buttery lavour from Leccino.
W
hat began as a spontaneous discovery during a countryside bike ride has blossomed into a thriving enterprise, crafting premium olive oils with care and attention.
In April 2012, the founders took a leap of faith. They purchased a neglected grove, once planted around the turn of the century and set to work restoring it. With only a second-hand tractor, basic storage, and crates for hand-picked fruit, they dove into research, learning about olive varieties, cultivation, and pressing. Their irst harvest was a true community affair: friends and family rolled up their sleeves to help, enjoyed lunch beneath the olive branches, and toasted the day with the irst drips of freshly pressed oil.
Central to their craft is a beautifully balanced Grove Blend extra virgin olive oil, which incorporates not just Frantoio and Leccino, but also Pendolino, Manzanilla, and Ascolano olives grown within the grove. Each harvest tells the story of the land, the seasons, and the caring hands behind the fruit.
Since those humble beginnings, Olives on the Hill has continued to nurture and re ine its wooded sanctuary. The duo carefully pruned the older, grey branches, allowing dappled sunlight to ilter into the grove’s
Harvest time is a celebration, a blend of mechanical ef iciency and classic hands-on picking. More than just an oil producer, Olives on the Hill is a community hub. What started as a small grove producing delicious olive oil has
now become the premier supplier to the olive industry of harvesting, pruning and storage equipment. Olives on the Hill and The Grove Supply Co go hand in hand; with the business operating out of Mangawhai they supply groves around the country. And not only olive groves, but several distillers and other fruit growers have also come to the Grove Supply Co for their storage needs. Olives on the Hill and the Grove Supply Co aren’t just nurturing olives; they are cultivating connections, crafting quality, and planting roots for future generations to savour every drop of liquid gold.

Porthouse Bar & Eatery Where Community Comes Together
W
hen Steve and Helen Whitehead bought the Porthouse Bar & Eatery on Marsden Highway, it was meant to be a short-term project. After 19 years of owning a bach at Ruakaka while living in Auckland, they had moved north to semi-retire in Te Kamo. Life was good – family time, their son thriving at Huanui College – but boredom crept in. So, they took on the Porthouse as a challenge. Then Covid hit.
What could have been a disaster turned into something remarkable. Locals rallied
around their favourite watering hole, and Steve and Helen became more than owners – they became part of the fabric of the community. Today, walking into the Porthouse feels like coming home. “Everyone knows everyone and are so helpful,” Helen says. It’s the kind of place where you’re guaranteed to see a familiar face. Their commitment goes far beyond pouring drinks. They’ve driven customers to cancer treatments in Auckland, hosted fundraisers for those facing health challenges, and made the Porthouse a true meeting place. The venue offers something for everyone: a
private games room, function space, garden bar with stage, dining area, and a sports bar vibe for catching the big games and races on the big screen.
manager’s full quali ication. He’s become a familiar face around the bar, a young, motivated guy not afraid of hard work and full of banter – just like the Porthouse spirit.
Planning a celebration? Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries – Porthouse is the perfect spot for big events. And this summer, the team is excited to serve Hyoketsu on tap, adding a refreshing twist to your favourite drinks.
What started as a short-term project has become a cornerstone of the Marsden community. So, whether you’re after a cold drink, a hearty meal, or a place to celebrate life’s moments, Porthouse Bar & Eatery is ready to welcome you.
Even their son, Craven, has grown with the business – starting in the kitchen washing dishes, now in the inal stages of his duty

COAST, COMMUNITY, CONNECTION
Living Between Coast and Country Bream Bay’s appeal lies not in a single defining feature, but in the way contrasting landscapes come together to shape everyday life. It is a place where the coast and the countryside exist in quiet harmony, offering a lifestyle that feels both expansive and grounded.
A
long the shoreline, the sea plays a constant role. The changing light across the water, the pull of the tides and the steady presence of open horizons create a sense of calm that de ines the coastal experience. Beach walks, time on the water and moments spent simply watching the weather roll in are woven naturally into daily routines. The coast here is not a destination to visit; it is part of the backdrop of life.
Step just a little inland and the environment shifts. Open paddocks, shelter belts, native bush and wide skies introduce
a different pace, one de ined by space and stillness rather than movement. This rural setting provides a welcome counterbalance to the coast, creating room to slow down, re lect and reconnect with the land. It is this breathing space that many residents value just as highly as proximity to the sea. What makes Bream Bay distinctive is how seamlessly these two environments connect. There is no hard line between coast and country; instead, the transition feels gradual and natural. A short drive can take you from the sound of waves to the quiet of farmland, from salt air to the
scent of grass and earth. This closeness allows people to enjoy variety without compromise. The balance between these landscapes also shapes the way people engage with their surroundings. Outdoor living takes on many forms, whether it is time spent on the beach, walking rural roads, tending gardens or enjoying uninterrupted views across open land. Life feels less scheduled and more responsive to nature, guided by daylight, weather and season rather than clocks.
In a world where lifestyles often feel increasingly compressed, Bream Bay offers something refreshingly different. Living between coast and country provides contrast, perspective and a sense of freedom that is becoming harder to ind. It is not about choosing one way of life over another, but about enjoying the space in between - a place where the sea and the land work together to create a setting that feels balanced, timeless and deeply connected to its environment.

Waipu Treatment Rooms Bula Vinaka and Kia Ora, Jiutatia Ledua is a proud native Fijian, born and raised in the city of Suva, with ancestral roots in the sacred outer islands of Yacata and Matuku. While raised in an urban environment, she later came to understand that healing is not something she chose, but a calling placed upon her life.
B
oth her grandfather and mother were traditional healers. At the age of 15, Jiutatia received a blessing from her grandfather, passing on healing gifts she did not yet fully understand. At the time, neither of them knew that just three years later she would begin her journey into beauty therapy—an unexpected path that would become the vessel through which her calling would be expressed.
In 2004, Jiutatia graduated from the South Paci ic Academy of Beauty Therapy and has since gained more than 22 years of experience working across Fiji, the Cook Islands, and New Zealand. As her professional journey unfolded, she grew to recognise the deeper spiritual purpose behind her work. Grounded in her Christian faith, Jiutatia believes her healing gift is given by God and guided by prayer, humility, and service to others.
Today, Jiutatia blends ancestral wisdom with modern therapeutic practice, guided by her belief that healing touch is a gift from God— one that brings peace, restoration, and renewal. Through faith-led intention and compassionate care, she creates a safe and nurturing space where clients can experience physical healing, emotional release, and spiritual renewal.

COAST, COMMUNITY, CONNECTION
Why More Families Are Choosing Bream Bay By now, the reasons people are drawn to Bream Bay are well understood. Its beaches, open spaces and relaxed coastal pace have long been part of its appeal. What has changed is how many families are no longer seeing the area as a weekend escape, but as a place to build long-term futures.
A
cross Ruakākā, One Tree Point and the wider Bream Bay area, family life has become irmly established. Children are growing up with the coast as their backyard, while parents enjoy a lifestyle that balances work, schooling and recreation without the pressures often associated with larger centres. Daily routines are shaped as much by the natural environment as they are by work schedules, creating a rhythm that many families value.
Housing remains a signi icant factor. For many, Bream Bay represents the opportunity to secure a quality home with space to grow, whether that means a larger
section, a modern build or proximity to the water. As development has progressed, the housing mix has diversi ied, supporting families at different stages while still retaining the area’s coastal character. The strength of local schools, sports clubs and community organisations continues to underpin the area’s family appeal. These networks help newcomers integrate quickly, while long-standing residents contribute to a strong sense of continuity and pride. As the population grows, services and amenities have followed, reinforcing Bream Bay as a practical and well-supported place to live.

Connectivity also plays its part. With Whangārei within easy reach, families can access employment, healthcare and education options while enjoying the bene its of coastal living. Improved infrastructure has made commuting increasingly straightforward, allowing residents to maintain professional ties while choosing a different pace of life at home.
What ultimately sets Bream Bay apart for families is the sense of belonging it offers. Community events, local initiatives and everyday interactions re lect an area that is con ident in its identity and optimistic about its future. For families who value lifestyle, connection and long-term opportunity, Bream Bay continues to prove that it is not just growing — it is maturing into a place where people are proud to stay.
