We recognised a need for a vibrant retirement community in Whangarei that offers both safety and fellowship. It has been a journey, but we are very proud of everything we have achieved here over the last 18 years.

Being a family-owned and operated business, we offer that personal touch with the opportunity for the residents to see us directly, work alongside the Residents Committee, and support them with their activities. We encourage residents to participate and get involved, aiming to create a warm, inclusive atmosphere that enriches everyone’s well-being.

Can you describe some of the daily activities and events that

Our residents enjoy a rich tapestry of activities—from creative arts like painting to leisure pursuits like bowling and pool. They revel in our luxurious indoor heated pool, state-ofthe-art cinema, and lively social gatherings including happy hours and exercise classes.

Our residents particularly treasure the opportunities for social engagement—be it through happy hours, communal dinners, or themed gatherings.

Celebrate Age, Let’s Engage!

Gaining popularity every year, attracting hundreds more silver celebrators and expanding from three days in November to two weeks in September, Whangārei’s Silver Festival is bigger than ever – this year offering 68 events.

“The two-week celebration, tailored to seniors, is a heartfelt celebration of our older adults, recognising their invaluable contributions to our community,” says Council’s Positive Ageing Advisory Group (PAAG) Chairwoman, Lesley Armstrong.

The group sparked the District’s first Silver Festival in 2021, to help rebuild the morale of the senior community following the COVID-19 outbreak, and has been quick to adapt it to suit the needs of those who take part. “First it was three days long, but we received feedback that it was too short for

people to get to a good range of activities. Last year, we extended it to two weeks, allowing people to pace themselves a bit, and even more groups lined up to host events. This year, we moved it into spring and have a grand finale event planned for 1 October, the International Day of Older Persons, and still the event is growing.”

Ms Armstrong said many community groups and clubs in the Whangārei District are keen to embrace the joy of community and the richness of life that the Festival offers. “We have a fabulous array of activities to explore, to connect and, most importantly, to have fun!”

The Silver Festival isn’t just about having a good time; it’s a step towards building age-friendly cities and communities. These communities embrace

the diverse needs of older adults, recognise the valuable contributions seniors make to our society and promote autonomy and inclusion. Do what makes you happy Kem Ormond Deciding to retire can be quite a big decision for some and for others. . . they are counting down the days.

When you decide to retire and take up some new challenges, the one thing you need to make sure is that you do what matters to you!

You need to find meaning and purpose in your retirement and this is your chance to think outside of the square and even spread those wings.

Travel. . . with a twist Not everyone can afford to travel to some warm island where they serve cocktails in oversized glasses and the sand is golden between your toes. But there are other ways to travel which are just as exciting, but different!

Why not consider house sitting. . . this can take you all over New Zealand and what a great way to meet new people. You could also house swap with a friend for a change of scenery. . . let’s hope your friend lives in a nice scenic area of New Zealand!

In summer you could look into seasonal jobs,some come with accommodation and what a way to enjoy summer and earn a few

dollars along the way.

If you are lucky enough to be able to travel overseas and you have family in Spain or the UK or Europe. . . . you could relocate seasonally, so no winter. I would be up for that!

Grow a friend base Retirement gives you the time to rekindle your friend base, people who you may have lost touch with or friends you haven’t seen in a while. It is a chance to join some new clubs, meet new people and get out and about.

Plant a vege garden Even if you have limited space, find room to plant a few veges. You will get alot of joy out of sharing you freshly grown produce with neighbours and friends.

Learn a new language You are never too old to learn and learning a new language can be fun. You will meet like minded people and I know in my town, a French speaking group meet for coffee and croissants and this gives them an opportunity to use their new found language skills.

Get that book on the press With all your new found time, maybe you could finish off that book that you started, but have not finished. That is what I am planning to do in my retirement. I am going to sit under a lovely shaded tree, with a cool drink, laptop, and finally finish a book that has

been a long time in the planning, in fact I am sure typewriters were still being used when I started it!

Enjoy your retirement and remember. . . do what makes you happy, life is too short for the boring stuff!

Retiring as a couple Kem Ormond Planning for retirement requires thought, it is hard enough when you are a single person, but when you are a couple, it can be a delicate road to tread. Made harder if there is an age difference and one partner retires while the other carries on having to work. For some it makes no difference but for others, it needs effective communication and forethought!

When do you retire?

Everyone has different circumstances, but you do need to sit down with your partner and make some decisions well in advance of retirement.

Many couples decide to retire together so they can enjoy doing activities together like travelling and spending time with family.

Others are quite happy if one works a little longer or maybe they are younger and not eligible for superannuation yet.

Finances As a retired couple you do need to discuss and decide on how to manage your finances. This does require careful thought when the time comes and there is no longer a pay cheque coming in.

Decisions that need to be made If you are both going to retire at the same time, you need to decide if you are going to change from maybe two cars to one. Are you going to stay living in the same house or look for something smaller?

Household chores Communication is needed when it comes to the household chores. Often a working partner will expect more chores to be done by the partner who has retired, but this is not always the case, and this can cause a little friction in the home. If you discuss this and sort this out right

from the start, it will make for a happier life!

Retiring together means the chores can be shared but you do need to decide who is going to do what.

Too much togetherness?

Pursuing separate interests and social groups for retired couples is a really healthy option and it means that when you come together again, you have interesting things to share and talk about. It could be that one partner goes off to a gardening club once a week and the other enjoys a local book club. Making sure you both spend quality time apart on a regular basis opens

up all sorts of possibilities that can make you feel better as a person and enrich your relationship.

Purpose and structure in your week Retirement is meant to be a time to take life at a slower pace, indulge in your hobbies and enjoy your family and friends. Honest communication with your partner is essential and there may be a need for compromise.

It is not always going to be smooth sailing and having some structure and purpose to your week can help your relationship.

Valuable assets for a happy retirement Kem Ormond Along and happy retirement is going to take more than money. Yes, you are going to have to have to crunch the numbers when the time comes and yes, you may have to tweak a few things here and there, but there are so many other things you need to think about as well Staying healthy A lot of retirees would say that having good health when you retire is number one in their books. It’s never too late to get moving and eat right. You now will have the time for leisurely walks, some yoga or pilates or even a few laps of the local pool.

Time to have a small vege garden so you can eat fresh and healthy meals and share surplus with friends.

Having a furry or feathered friend.

Once you retire you will have the opportunity to finally get a pet if you so wish. A small dog is on my retirement list as I will finally have the time to walk and train a new puppy and at the same time get some exercise myself.

If you are a retiree on your own pets make wonderful companions whether furry or feathered.

Hit the books . . . or movies I am looking forward to the day I can spend hours in a nice sunny corner with my nose in a good book and not feel guilty. I try it now, but I look at the washing pile, dishes in the sink and my unmade bed and get a cause of the guilts.

Then there are the senior rates at the movies . . . wahoo! I will be up for that.

Having a purpose I am not retired yet so have very little spare time, but every Christmas I help with the Community Christmas lunch which I really enjoy. I think if you have a little spare time, a few hours a week doing some volunteering is a really good way to stay connected to your community.

Whether it is helping at your local school, op shop, library, drop-in centre or even helping someone who needs assistance learning a few more computer skills, it is a really fulfilling way to spend a few hours.

It doesn’t mean you have to be doing it every day, but go for a co ee one morning a week with friends or get together with a group for an early morning walk or maybe a combined meal once a week.

Social connections Now you have some time on your hands, catch up with some of your friends you may have lost touch with. It is important to keep up with social connections otherwise days can be long and lonely.

Learning and interests Here is your chance to take up painting, join the local writing group or try your hand at pottery.

All the things that you have wanted to try but lack of time prohibited.

Try something new, a great way to keep your mind active.

And finally, attitude Enjoyment of your retirement boils down to attitude. You can either stay at home doing those mundane chores every day or you can venture out, catch up with friends, try out that new café, join the library and enjoy your new sense of freedom!

You are never too old to LEARN! People often think that after a certain age you struggle to learn new things. In fact, the opposite is true. Older adults are just as capable of learning new things and can thrive in new environments.

They also have the wisdom and life experience to make an effective contribution plus the time to enjoy activities outside of work and home. Keeping busy can actually keep you young as you age.

Learning new things challenges your brain. Did you know that you can improve your chances of maintaining a healthy mind by managing your health, daily exercise, eating a healthy diet, getting sufficient sleep, staying socially engaged and learning new things? Research from the University of Auckland has revealed that exercising your brain is just as important as a physical fitness regime.

There are some great ideas you can implement with your technology, for example, why not start a blog? Write about your adventures and musings in retirement and see how many other retirees you connect to who are living similar experiences all over New Zealand – and the world.

You could start writing that book you have talked about for so long or why not start a family tree, genealogy can be so interesting.

You could even start a YouTube channel or get into social media and join in on the TikTok and Instagram crazes.

Then there are smart watches, smart televisions, and smart speakers. The list is endless if you love technology. And once you have mastered these, there will always be someone who needs a hand with theirs!

Learn a new skill Technology opens a world of opportunities when it comes to learning a new skill.

You can watch YouTube videos on how to repair something, or you could learn a new language, so you are all ready for that overseas holiday.

Why not teach yourself how to play the guitar or a piano or even the flute.

New to technology If you are retiring and have been in a job that has involved little or no technology but now have the time to learn, there are a variety of community learning networks that will be able to support and assist you to confidently use technology.

A lot of these classes are run by volunteers and o en classes are free of charge.

Health and technology Technology can greatly benefit older people, making it convenient and safe to connect with healthcare professionals and have virtual visits from the comfort of your own homes.

Time to bowel screen Bowel screening can help find cancer early when it is easier to treat.

The bowel is part of the food digestive system. It joins the stomach to the anus (bottom) and helps waste material (poo) to leave the body.

Bowel cancer, also called colon, rectal or colorectal cancer, starts when cells in the bowel begin to grow out of control. The cells can turn into a polyp (growth) and some polyps may turn into a cancer over a number of years. Regular bowel screening, provides an opportunity to find and treat bowel cancer at an early stage.

The National Bowel Screening Programme is a free programme offered to 60- to 74-year-olds who are eligible for publicly funded health care and aims to detect precancerous changes or bowel cancer at an early stage.

If you are 60 to 74 years old and are eligible to take part, you will be sent: • an invitation letter • a consent form • a free bowel screening test kit, with instructions on how to complete it.

• The test is clean and simple to do at home.

What are the symptoms of bowel cancer?

There may be no warning signs that you have bowel cancer but common symptoms include: • a change in your normal bowel habit that continues for several weeks • blood in your bowel motion These symptoms can be caused by other conditions, but it’s important to get them checked.

If you have any bowel symptoms that concern you, discuss these with your doctor as soon as you can, don’t wait to receive the free bowel screening test.

How common is bowel cancer?

New Zealand has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world, with more than 3000 people diagnosed with it every year and more than 1200 dying from the disease.

Bowel cancer is more common in those over the age of 60 years.

There is no certain way to prevent bowel cancer, but you can reduce your risk of developing by: • having a healthy diet high in fruit, vegetables and fibre • regular exercise • being smoke-free.

If you have had extensive inflammatory bowel disease, or have a family history of bowel cancer, you may have a higher risk of developing bowel cancer.

How do I do the test?

The bowel screening test detects tiny traces of blood present in your bowel motion (poo). These tests have an expiry date, so it is important that you complete and post it the same day. The laboratory can’t process tests which have passed their expiry date and you will be sent another test to complete.

To do the test, you need to: • collect a small sample from your bowel motion (poo) using the test stick, and put it into the tube • put the sample in the zip-lock bag, along with the dated and completed consent form • post it as soon as possible in the reply-paid envelope provided.

You will be contacted with your result and told what this means for you. You may also receive a call from your doctor or a nurse.

What is the Difference?

By challenging the brain with new activities, you can help build new brain cells and strengthen the connections between them. This may counter the harmful effects of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia pathologies. Activities that stretch your mind such as reading, crosswords and puzzles, and activities such as bridge, mah-jong and chess are excellent. By challenging your brain, you can learn some great new things such as learning a new language or taking up a new hobby or sport.

Kem Ormond Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life, while Alzheimer’s is a specific disease. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia..

Think of an umbrella Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a group of symptoms that a ect how well our brains work. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease – which around two-thirds of people with dementia have.

Dementia is progressive, which means that for most people the changes gradually spread through the brain and lead to the symptoms getting worse. Dementia is different for everyone – what people experience, and how quickly they are a ected is unique to them.

What they can do, remember, and understand may change from day to day. When someone you care about is diagnosed with dementia it can be a hard piece of news to deal with.

I have three of my family members with dementia all at the same time . . . all at different stages and all struggling in their own way.

The decline in cognitive memory means the gradual loss in thinking, reasoning, or remembering. While the diagnosis may not be completely unexpected, it can still be difficult for all parties

Caring for someone with dementia I would call it a roller coaster ride caring for someone with dementia. You ride along quite smoothly and then it’s gets extremely bumpy.

Don’t feel you have to deal with it all on your own.

There is plenty of support in the community to assist such as your local Alzheimer’s and Dementia organisations, as well as your local NASC (Needs Assessment and Service Coordination Service).

What are the signs While many forms of dementia have a slow onset, some warning signs to be aware of include: • Memory loss that affects your daily living • Frequently misplacing things • Difficulty performing your regular daily tasks • Difficulty with understanding language or communicating with others • Changes in mood and behaviour • Disorientation to time or place

How can you reduce the risk?

As we get older, our risk of developing dementia increases. But evidence shows there are things you can do to help reduce this risk. These include keeping active, eating healthily, and staying mentally active and social.

They arrive smiling and leave laughing, they help each other, relate well, are enthusiastic in participating and have an excellent attendance record. This extends outwards to the community and our level of community involvement and collaboration has never been higher than now.

There are several points of difference that make the service unique, including the level of quality and the type of care. The Centre provides complex care, based on creating opportunities that help clients to keep their physical and mental faculties sharp, therefore slowing any progress of their condition/s.

To meet demand we have a new additional service which is an extended day service whereby we can assist in caring for those who require care while family members attend meetings and appointments. This is available by appointment, or impromptu, as needed to assist.

The later stages of dementia Dementia is a progressive condition for which there is currently no cure, so it’s important to be prepared and to know what to expect at the final stages. Things will not be so overwhelming if you plan well in advance and take up the help and advice from local agencies trained to deal with dementia.

Eyes & ageing

Changes that occur in our eyes as we grow older can have a big effect on our vision.

From the age of about 45 years, you should have youreyes testedevery few years to check how well you can see and to look for signs of common problems such ascataracts,glaucomaandmacular degeneration. All of these problems can be managed better if picked up early.

Keep your eyes healthy Did you know? Your eyes need three times as much light when you’re 60 as they did when you were 20?

• Use good lighting.

• Eat well –especially fruit and vegetables.

• Wear sunglasses – reduce your risk of cataracts.

• Quit smoking – reduce your chances of developing cataracts and other eye conditions.

• Stay a healthy weight – being overweight increases your risk of diabetes, which can lead to sight loss.

• Exercise – this stimulates good circulation, increasing oxygen intake which is important for eye health.

• Sleep well – as you sleep, your eyes are continuously lubricated and irritants, such as dust or smoke that have accumulated during the day are cleared out.

Presbyopia (age-related long-sightedness) Get regular eye tests and wear the correct lenses As we age, the ability of eye lenses to focusdecreasesgradually. This makes it hard to focus on things that are nearby (known as presbyopia) and is the reason many people over the age of 40 need reading glasses.

Reading glasses: • help the eye to focus on things that are nearby • need to be gradually increased in power as the eye loses its focusing ability • do not speed up or slow down the changes happening in the eye.

Cataract Clouding of the lens within an eye is called a cataract. Your risk of getting cataracts increases with age and many people over the age of 60 years have cataracts.Some cataracts may require surgery.Surgery is usually only advised when the vision has become so blurred that it’s difficult to carry out normal visual tasks.

Glaucoma Glaucoma is a condition in which the pressure inside the eye is too high and causes loss of vision.

Glaucoma can run in families and is seen more commonly in the over-50 age group.

Most people are unaware they have the disease until it is in an advanced state.

It’s important to have regular eye examinations and be screened for glaucoma, especially if there is a family history.

In most cases the condition can be successfully treated with eye pressure lowering drops.

Macular degeneration In the over 60-year-old age group, gradual loss of central ‘sharp’ vision can occur. This is usually caused by changes in an area at the back of the eye called the macula. The macula helps with the sharp focusing needed for reading and other fine visual tasks.

If you experience a sudden change in your vision, eg, distortion, reduced near vision or blurred central vision, you should see your doctor or ophthalmologist without delay.
