Intro
Drawing has always been intimate and honest and we put this exhibition together simply because of that. Drawing can be traced back to Neolithic marks on cave walls to our present dream of where home is. As school children we made marks to interrelate our presences with the environment. As adults, drawing gives value to thought and its desire to articulate memories and visions. From grocery shopping list to conceptually mapping a city, we constantly have drawn and redrawn to navigate the everyday. In They Have Brought Erasers With Them Dusadee asked six artists, whose practices are grounded in drawing, to come south — roughly 1,500 kilometers south of Bangkok where they are mostly based, to Kuala Lumpur to make a calling. It is a calling to the medium that is rare but abundant around our part of the world.

Covid-19 and Drawing Dusadee Huntrakul, 29 March 2020
THIS IS A CRAZY TIME. Myself and the five, there are six in total, other artists in this exhibition can’t even go to our own show. We have already bought the tickets. My university announced that traveling to countries on the restricted list would put us at risk of the Covid-19 virus; Malaysia included. We were super excited at first but later scared about traveling, and so decided to go to Malaysia just before the university made their announcements. At the time, we were listening to the news and looking at the restrictions on various embassy alerts. A few days before the trip, we decided not to travel to not put the public at risk if we were to become carriers and spreaders of the Covid-19 virus. However, the exhibition must go on. So, instead of carrying art into Malaysia, we had to ship everything. As I’m writing this, the show opens tomorrow and things have still not yet arrived. My first visit to Malaysia had the great (late) Ise take me out to Kampung Baru. A few other friends also took me to amazing barbecue pork places, where the head chef came out only to cut the pork and then left the kitchen. There were more amazing noodles and sweets than I could imagine. At a later time, during an Architecture Seminar hosted by UC Berkeley in Kuala Lumpur, I brought my wife to Kampung Baru to look

at old houses and somehow with the kindness of the owner, we were given the opportunity to go inside an old yellow house. We were left feeling very grateful to get to know the walled city in relation to Malaysia’s vision on urban planning. I have always wanted to come back. Before Covid-19, there was PM 2.5, a shooting at the Terminal 21 Mall, The Coup and its questionable and insufficient government, droughts, floods, unfair labor practices and wealth distribution, multiple corruption cases, the killing of Qasem Soleimani and Trump’s policies, protests in Hong Kong and it’s relationship to China, climate change, shift in sourcing/producing regenerative energy and food production, and the list goes on. However, Covid-19 makes me certain that we, living in Southeast Asia, deserve better public infrastructure. Corrupted policies must be abolished as well as we must imprison corrupted public officials. I really wish that justice is truly on the people’s side. Best public policies must be written asking and accomplishing what we want/need. What do we want? When I started talking to Joshua of A+ Works of Art, the conversation was about how it was rare to see a show devoted to the practice of drawing in this part of the world. There are probably thousands of reasons why that would make sense. I told him that I have always wanted to put on an exhibition that has to do with drawing together. This was because I believe that drawing has to do with how we value the dreams of our children. As Emma Dexter said, “Drawing is everywhere”, this makes me see the world even more. By spreading tales of drawing from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur, we hope to spread visions based on a medium that is as old as thinking. I know that our They Have Brought Erasers With Them, comes at a crazy time, as this writing might as well be a drawing, our exhibition has the stories above and so much more.

Kamolros Wonguthum b.1992 Bangkok, Thailand
She received an MFA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths university and currently lives and works in London. Her feminine approach towards structures of power employs an autobiographical approach in not victimising the use of personal narrative. She wants to empower social value systems and concepts that are possibly considered vulnerabilities. Her practice aims to subvert aspects of gendered stereotypes, shifting how we objectify what we see. Wonguthum’s work encompasses: installation, photography, video, writing, drawing, poetry and collage on mixed media, the work often amalgamates together, sitting on the fringes of each discipline. Wonguthum’s choice in media, image and scale accentuates a starkly cute poetic of the social, teasing and daring us to indulge our imaginations.

Prae Pupityastaporn b.1981 Bangkok, Thailand
A Thai painter whose works are mostly the depiction of the overlooked domestic scenery and landscape. Her ďŹ gurative paintings are produced with overlapping thin layers of acrylic colors and some solid elements that are inspired by various medias ranging from random photography, architect structure, landscape, daily life situation and literature. Pupityastaporn’s paintings are the rearrangement of ordinary objects and scenes with undeďŹ ned elements, some of which are derived from photography and other sources to create an obscure result that has no continuity of a story.

Orawan Arunrak b.1985, Bangkok, Thailand
Orawan Arunrak’s work is largely inspired by her everyday life. Using tools like pencils, pens, paper, but also photography and the internet, she creates works that take the forms of drawing, painting and installation. Her practice is aimed at engaging in dialogue with local inhabitants in an attempt to merge the space of art and non-art. Repeatedly crossing national, cultural and spiritual borders, Arunrak’s work has examined likeness and difference within and between varied locations in both Asia and Europe where she has lived in recent years, and based on relationships she has with these places.

Unchalee Anantawat b.1982, Thailand
Unchalee Anantawat’s practice can be seen as anti-aesthetic. While it is somehow reject- ing traditional aesthetic in a sense, it is on the other hand developing its own unique way of visual composing. She has been working conceptually without proper plan to exercise her artistic freedom, the freedom that she doesn’t have to follow any particular process of working, yet to yield the unexpected outcome. Humor and material are highly important to her works. Inspired by her perception of humour in human made objects which sometimes show weirdly and subtly malfunction or malformation, she tries to deliver those humorous moments with her works. Her usage of material is one of her vehicle to deliver the absurdity, she only selects the material that resonates with her humorously. Unchalee’s works depict herself in various situations, those mundane situations were exaggerated into out of the world colourful scenarios. She creates characters to populate in her world and to create narratives within it. Since she has been creating her own world in her own terms, Unchalee has been working her way from making twodimensional imageries then later adopted three-dimensional environment. Collaborators and Curator Profiles
Gallery VER is an artist-led initiative, with the intention to bring forth a collective stream of ideas and dynamism in how contemporary art and culture are defined and viewed. Through exhibitions, projects, one-off activities, events, and institutional exchanges, it seeks to initiate strands of programming under the best possible processes. The gallery space provides and supports a discursive platform that invests in both artists and curators to realize innovative exhibits and projects relevant to artistic and conceptual practices.

Bangkok Citycity Gallery seeks the excellence, supports the emergence, and encourages the potential. Open to all forms of artistic creation, the gallery combines the intrinsic qualities of form, information, and transformation into art production which serves multiple objectives of art as advocacy. Founded by Op Sudasna and Supamas Phahulo in 2015, situated in the heart of Bangkok city, Bangkok Citycity Gallery has fused conversations, communities, and pluralities of contemporary culture into a hybrid of commercial gallery and project space. In 2016, in partnership with Studio 150, Bangkok Citycity Gallery co-founded Bangkok Art Book Fair. In 2018, the gallery founded OPEN FIELD, a non-profit organisation, to support knowledge production and contemporary culture. Ghost:2561 is the first initiative supported by OPEN FIELD. Nova Contemporary aims to cultivate the reciprocal exchange of Thailand’s contemporary art and culture to southeast Asia and beyond. We pride ourselves in showcasing both established and emerging artists through our diverse programme of exhibitions and event — with a primary focus on exceptional Thai artists. It is our hope to bring art education to the general public and contribute to Thailand’s ever growing vibrant art community. Dusadee Huntrakul (b.1978, Thailand. Lives and works in Bangkok, Thailand) While he is not busy guest-lecturing, raising an almost two year old son, growing things by parking lots, or making his own art, he curates exhibitions that he truly wants to see.
