Lost (2015) Manit Sriwanichpoom

This photographic series was born from an accidental error during an attempt to scan and digitize old glass negatives from 1964 – 1968 taken by Liang Ewe (1911 – 1992), photographer & owner of a photographic studio in Phuket, Thailand. Ideally, the modern digital scanner would accurately transfer historical data from the analog to the digital format; we honestly believe that the resulting data would be correct & match exactly the original source. In reality, the digital format can be corrupted, distorted & manipulated at any stage of the process: scanning, transferring, transmitting, viewing & printing.

Sudden gaps of information in the image files occurred at random on Liang Ewe’s portraits, neglecting to convey certain bodily parts: the eyes, the mouth and sometimes the whole face is missing, creating the sense that bits of these people are trapped on another dimension of space and time. Like images from a horror movie, a face without a mouth has no eyes to gaze out from, another face has eyes but no mouth with which to utter a sound.

Ironically, although we can obtain perfect digitally-scanned images of them, we’ll never know the identities and the tales of the people in the photographs, since the studio manager never kept records of his sitters: their names, their ages, where they’re from and what they did. They were just customers. We know what they look like but the faces are unnamed.

In a country like Thailand, history is of kings and rulers of men. We tend not to promote or encourage the writing of the history of commoners, as if their stories are meaningless & worthless to remember. The discovery of Liang Ewe’s negatives is the rediscovery of a past that has survived imbued within 2-dimensional glass plates. In the 19th century when photography was invented, some viewed it with the superstitious fear that their soul would be stolen, lost, trapped by the camera within the frame of the photograph forever. The series ‘Lost’ confirms that what photography records becomes the past the instant the camera shutters close. We still know nothing about these people, lost in the digital twilight zone.

Man Dies Twice The old saying goes that men die twice from the earth: the first time when breathing stops and the soul leaves the body; the second time when their names are no longer spoken. After this second death men are gone forever.

Even though death is inescapable, men are going to find many ways to extend their time as long as they can, just as in ancient Egypt kings inscribed their names on the sacred buildings of their civilization, and many kings since then have written their names in stone.

When photography appeared in early 19th century, after a few decades of development it seemed to be a more interesting answer for the second death than names on stone; easy to make and cheaper than the expensive monument.

Photography became the tool for the creation of identity in the modern world as people learned how to deal with the immortality that photography can confer. They began photographing loved ones who have passed away, and posing them as if they were still alive, as in postmortem photography; or placing photographs on the grave stone in the hope that the departed would be forever remembered.

In The East Just a few decades after the first man appeared in photography, Oriental people began experiencing the strange western instrument comprising a big wooden box, black cloth, tripod, being worked over by a weird western man with ridiculous actions. Soon people could see themselves or others as captured by photography. Some believed that his soul was trapped in the image but, like the western elite, the king of Siam1 at that time quickly learned the importance of photography. He posed for many portraits in western dress 32

for political reasons, the photographs sent to leaders around the world as a diplomatic tool, to present to the world that his kingdom was civilized and that he was a person who understood you (the west) as an equal. However as a Buddhist who believed in the circle of life, the king of Siam did not use photography to perpetuate his own remembrance; even realistic monuments were never displayed during his reign.

In modern times Siam’s elite were the first group to widely use photography.

Like his father before him, the next king2 used photography to represent himself around the world, but he took it further than the previous king; he selected the best photographers for his portraits; he took pictures of his royal family and he loved to pose candidly for his consorts.

Almost a century after the Oriental elites learned to use photography as the storehouse of their memory and keeper of their names, photographs of the king3 were given to ordinary people, placed in government offices, schools, even on the streets. The royal images also adorned official calendars and magazine covers twice a year. So photography appears to be the successful way to immortalise royal names. Furthermore, photography can bring the dead back and make them live again outside the frame of the image.

Sometimes an image in photography can forge a new relationship with the present world beyond its frame and create a different meaning, such as the photograph of the king4 cooking picnic style in his leisure time 100 years ago which has become a mascot in the restaurant business. They hang this photograph on top of the wall beside his grandson’s image5; thus the name of the king from 100 years ago can be spoken again.

To be spoken of again, however, depends on the collaboration between the past and the present. The new middle class of present day Siam, which had played no part in Siam’s long history, feel the emptiness at the heart of their world. They’re rich and educated; now they need means to express themselves, their identity and their loyalty. Their connection to a historically enduring institution is a necessity of life. Hence it’s a necessity to cite the name of a king from a hundred years ago. Such things do not happen of themselves; they must be created and their effects produced.

The Ordinary Never Exists Almost 200 years after the invention of photography, everyone in Thai society uses photography. To immortalise their loved ones, they use their pictures on the gravestones or on the temple wall containing their relatives’ ashes.

However, unlike the elite they do not use the complicate method to memorialise the dead. It seems so nice that photography can make the ordinary man immortal because his or her face is there for all time. But photography has its own voice and language. The language of photography seems simple and easy to understand because it always contains the object of the real within it, for example the face, place and time. But without reference to the meaning of all objects inside the photograph, no one of the future would understand 33

that language, without such understanding, no one would ever again utter the name of the one in the photograph.

Like the Greek gods on Olympus, their greatest fear is that man would no longer speak their names, which means they’re going to disappear, be gone forever. For man, photography might just be the simplest way to keep themselves alive. For the elite or royal with the power to use photography’s full potential to burnish and maintain their system’s immortality, coupled with the void in the lives of the modern middle class Thai, photography has become an essential instrument of statecraft, bringing back great names to immortal life among us.

Besides, it’s an impossibility that the ordinary man’s name would ever be heard of again. These are people whose names were never cited even while they were still alive. To this day millions of photographs of ordinary people have been created. Millions of anonymous faces. As time passes, they are finally as unknown to the world as ever.

On one hand they’re never gone away; they are still there in the photograph.

They never change and remain untouched by time, yet many of faces seem trapped inside the photograph, so that their existence has remained, even as many of the images fade away in time while some are gone forever. Even so, as in the series ‘Lost’ by Manit Sriwanichpoom, some faces can return to life from the past through collaboration with the present; some images saved at whim by someone with some system of technology, for a specific visual purpose. For the ordinary man, some faces may remain to be seen by any and everyone, but here they have become elements in support of the new image’s principal aim, both in meaning and in aesthetics. Certainly, they are there, but they do not exist, as if they are not there.

Artist Profile Born in Bangkok, Manit Sriwanichpoom is one of Thailand’s leading photographers, and the best known in the international art world, having exhibited worldwide including in the Centre Pompidou (Paris, 2010), The 6th Asia Pacific Triennial (Australia, 2009), Photoquai (Paris, 2007), Gwangju Biennale (Korea, 2006), the Venice Biennale (2003), Photo Espana (2001), the Hayward Gallery (UK, 1999) and Bienal de Sao Paulo (1998). His solo shows include Phenomena & Prophecies at the Singapore Art Museum (2010); Lambs of God at the Centre for Contemporary Photography (Melbourne, Australia, 2008); Bangkok in Pink’ at the Yokohama Museum of Art (2002) and Man in Pink at Galerie VU’, Paris (2007).

Founded in 2017, A+ WORKS of ART strives to engage contemporary practices and discussions in new media art, especially photography, video, installation and performance art.
