S TAT E M E N T iaab is an international exchange and studio program which offers visual artists from Basel and the surrounding region the opportunity to spend a number of months working abroad. iaab was founded by the Christoph Merian Foundation in 1986 with the construction of a building containing studios in the St. AlbanTal in Basel. Since then it has expanded steadily, with studios in the nearby locations of Arlesheim, Freiburg i.Br. and Riehen. Since 1998 the project has been supported and financed by an extended group of patrons, consisting of the Cantons of Basel-Landschaft and Basel-Stadt, the Riehen authorities, Lรถrrach, Freiburg i.Br. and the Christoph Merian Foundation. On behalf of this group, the program is managed by the Christoph Merian Foundation. iaab permits contacts between artists from different countries and cultures. It promotes an intercultural and interdisciplinary dialogue about art and carries it forward. Against this background, the iaab intentionally fosters contacts with countries that have a non-western culture. The basis for exchange and dialogue is provided by partnerships with similar organisations abroad. These partnerships have been broadened and intensified over the years. Our exchange program reacts flexibly to changes in the production of art and on the art market, regularly embarking on new partnerships. The range of its widely dispersed exchange locations abroad consequently remains up-to-date and is continuously subject to new impulses.

Eva Scharrer: PASSAGES

Eva Scharrer

CHOICES PROJEKTRAUM M54, MÖRSBERGERSTRASSE 54, 4057 BASEL,November 3 to November 11, 2007

Special Event: Wednesday, November 7, 2007, 7 pm: Renatus Zürcher: Rock craze in Positano. My stay at the Castel Clavel and the consequences. The third iaab choices exhibition PASSAGES was curated by Eva Scharrer, an independent art historian, curator and art reviewer, who has been living in

Basel for the past two years and who has worked as a curatorial assistant at institutions such as P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center New York, Kunstverein Freiburg and Kunsthaus Baselland. Eva Scharrer has curated exhibitions herself, for example «Submerge. New Art from New York» in 2002 at the Kunstbunker Nuremberg, has written several catalogue texts and writes regularly for magazines such as Artforum International and Modern Painters, New York, the KunstBulletin, the C Magazine, Toronto, Regioartline and the Basler Zeitung. This year, she was co-curator of the Sharjah Biennale 8 in the United Arab Emirates. The word «passage» evokes different aspects of travelling and being away: a spatial gateway situation (portal), the passage of time, what travellers assimilate along their way (au passage), and finally the travellers themselves (passengers). The works shown in the exhibition were either developed in the host country, or reflect how artists, during their stay aborad, dealt with impressions they brought along with them. It provides snapshots of places, spaces and people, in which things found in the host country and their history encounter the fleeting impressions of the artist passing through. iaab has cooperated with Projektraum M54 and Tweaklab for the organisation of PASSAGES.

The cycle «choices», which was launched by iaab in 2005, is a platform that invites personalities from the Basel art scene to present a subjective choice of iaab artists in an exhibition. Every year, a representative of the following categories is responsible for curating the exhibition:

2005: IAAB INSTITUTION‘S CHOICE (Dokustelle, Ruth Buck) 2006: IAAB ARTIST‘S CHOICE (Lena Eriksson + Chris Regn) 2007: IAAB CURATOR‘S CHOICE (Eva Scharrer) 2008: IAAB GALLERIST‘S CHOICE 2009: IAAB COLLECTOR‘S CHOICE

Eva Scharrer: PASSAGES

The exhibition PASSAGES shows a selection of works by Basel artists who in the course of the past year visited Beijing, Berlin, Douala, Fremantle, Helsinki, Istanbul, Johannesburg/Cape Town, New York, Montreal, Paris, Rotterdam and Tbilisi under the iaab international exchange and studio program. In addition, an iaab scholarship holder from Istanbul who is currently on exchange in Basel and an artist from Leipzig – a future iaab partner city – have also been invited to participate. Renatus Zürcher, who used his travel grant to visit Positano near Naples, is reporting on his project by means of a presentation accompanied by a film. The term «passage» denotes a transitional situation in space or time. In the context of this exhibition, it refers to the artists’ six month stay in their respective host country as well as to different aspects of traveling and being under way – and not least to the spatial passages that the works develop on the spot. In making my selection, it was important for me that the works should reflect the place where or for which they were created. In addition, I looked for works that would interact with one another and with

the exhibition space and that – in keeping with the exchange program’s purpose – would also open up new perspectives. On entering the room, visitors find themselves confronted by boarding that alters their line of sight and that bears a plaque commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall. It belongs to Hildegard Spielhofer’s multi-part installation Berlin Walks. In a combination of literary and pictorial references, the five-part work looks at locations in Berlin that seem inconspicuous today but that have a turbulent history. The panels are arranged in accordance with their geographical location on the map of Berlin. «Bornholmer Strasse» and «Falkplatz» refer to the course of the Berlin Wall and its subsequent dismantlement. «Volkspark Hasenheide» in the rear of the room refers to Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, the so-called father of gymnastics, and his patriotic vision of a united German nation. The full work includes two other parts, one about the Friedrichshain People’s Park, with an episode about Berlin’s «rubble women» as a reference to the caesura of the Second World War, and a second one about

the Leipzigerstrasse, but due to space constraints we have only been able to exhibit three walls here. Flanked by these arenas of German history, visitors jump abruptly to the African continent. In Cameroon Martin Blum filmed a one-legged woodcutter on his way to work and, in order to present his video, has constructed a kind of African kiosk decorated with advertising for chemical foodstuffs sold by global giants like Nestle. Further back the rear Philipp Gasser and Bruno Tremblay have mounted an installation composed of individual works and one joint work that were created during their time together in Johannesburg and Cape Town. A story lies behind every one of them. A painted banner brought back from China by Karin Suter is suspended from a roof beam, giving painting a spatial dimension. (Another banner is to be found in the courtyard of the M54.) On the wall to the left, visitors will find drawings and drawn-over photographs by Hagar Schmidhalter, as well as a video of a New York street scene in Soho, where her studio was located. Next to them hangs a photograph of the inside of a Georgian bus.

The photograph is part of Claudio Rasano’s series «Living Inside Tbilisi». Maja Rieder’s large-format, almost abstract graphite drawings of Modernist suburban architecture were created in Helsinki. On the opposite wall Cécile Hummel, using photography and painting, has woven impressions gained in Paris and elsewhere into a dense mural installation entitled Passenger. Martina Gmür’s acrylic drawings recount little episodes during her stay in Montreal, while Judith Wälti’s Walk – a walk along a beach that is half performance and half documentation – was created in Fremantle. The work’s conceptual aspect – at each stop, the artist took one photograph l ooking forward and one looking back – to some extent sums up the exhibition’s spatial concept. Above the entrance to the cellar, visitors will find two works by Christine Camenisch – a slide show and a video on a surveillance monitor that is repeated further down in the cellar and that shows a stroll along one of the corridors in the Cîté des Arts in Paris. Christina Schmid’s slide show was also created in Paris; the interiors it features inspired the two specially made seats. Finally, Isabel Schmiga’s instal-

lation of ties deals very humorously with the somewhat overwhelming machismo to which she, as a woman, was exposed in Istanbul. Bernhard Bretz’s and Matthias Holliger’s work above the entrance door was a late passenger, not reaching us until the day the exhibition opened. Since the iaab program is about an exchange, and not just about studios for Basel artists in foreign countries, I decided to modify the concept of the choices series slightly by also inviting two special guests: Gökce Süvari from Turkey, who is currently living in a iaab guest studio in Basel, has installed two works in the entrance corridor. Lutz Rainer Müller from Leipzig is not connected with the iaab program in any way. As a guest artist, he therefore decided on a parasitic-collaborative action. Instead of traveling to Basel, he used the money he would have spent on a hotel to commission two Basel architects to build a »weekend house” for him from which he could survey the exhibition. The team of young architects Johannes Feld and Georg Schmid from the newly founded F.A.B. – Forschungs- und Architekturbüro Basel / Zurich – accepted the assignment, their first for a house, at very short notice.

I should like to take this opportunity to thank them once again for their spontaneous, highly original and energetic contribution. The passage up to the house can already be seen in the corridor and will be transmitted via the Internet to Lutz Müller in Leipzig. I hope that the various motifs and themes that constantly recur in the exhibition – walking and strolling, exchange and collaboration, house building and (sub-)urban architecture, as well as feelings of anguish and surveillance – will merge here to stimulate exciting interaction. I should like to thank Anna Bonacci, Ruth Walther, the iaab, M54, Tweaklab and all the participating artists for their trust, their support and their fantastic cooperation.
