About APL Window Solutions

For more than 50 years, APL Window Solutions has been dedicated to designing and manufacturing window and door systems tailored for New Zealand homes and conditions. Since 1971, we’ve grown from a family-owned Waikato business into one of the country’s leading providers of window and door solutions.

Our focus on quality, innovation, and continuous improvement drives every part of our operation, from exploring new materials and finishes to refining our manufacturing processes. Everything we supply is designed and tested to meet the New Zealand Building Code, ensuring reliable performance and long-term durability.

In 2020, Architectural Glass Products (AGP) was established to complete APL’s vertically integrated window system offering. Glass is fundamental to any window solution, and AGP brings some of the most advanced glazing technology in the country - including Low-E options for improved thermal performance, insulated glass units with argon gas, and warm-edge spacer technology that reduces heat transfer and minimises condensation - all made in a purpose built, world-class manufacturing facility in Cambridge.

Through our brands - Altherm Window Systems, First Windows & Doors, and Vantage Windows & Doors - we work with a nationwide network of independent manufacturers who share our commitment to craftsmanship and service. Together, we’re helping shape the future of New Zealand’s homes and buildings.

About Profile Group

Profile Group is the parent company behind APL Window Solutions, bringing together a family of specialised businesses that together, create New Zealand’s only fully integrated window system. While APL has long delivered industry-leading aluminium window and door solutions, the addition of Architectural Glass Products (AGP) marked a pivotal step, enabling us to control and coordinate every component required to engineer a complete, high-performance window system.

Within Profile Group, each stage of the process - from aluminium extrusion, component design, and surface finishing to glass manufacture, unit assembly, logistics, and distribution - is handled internally. This level of integration provides confidence in complete system compatibility and consistency. It also ensures every element is designed with a unified approach to design and is tailored specifically to the demands of New Zealand’s varied climates.

APL and AGP ensure the frame and glass are designed to perform together, not as separate components. The window and door systems are designed with high-performance glass technologies in mind, ensuring the two parts operate as a single, optimised unit. This alignment is critical for achieving reliable thermal performance, compliance outcomes, acoustic control, and long-term durability. In practice, it means architects can specify with certainty, knowing the window system has been designed, tested, and validated together to deliver predictable real-world results.

Our commitment to sustainability

As the country's largest manufacturer of aluminium windows and doors, we believe we have a responsibility to improve the way we do things and reduce our environmental impacts.

We're rethinking what we make and how we produce it. We are reconsidering what we buy, and how we can reuse more of what is leftover.

We are measuring ourselves, committing to targets and openly sharing our learnings so that we not only reduce our own impact as a group but reset industry expectations and provide a model for circular success.

Our goals

Our approach to sustainability is guided by these three pillars, they drive decision-making and actions we take as a business. Within each pillar are a number of initiatives that collectively have the power to make a big impact within our industry, and the country we call home.

Span Tables

Span Tables outline the maximum length or span that profiles can be built to, and therefore the size of the relevant window or door.

Span Tables should be used as a guide for the suitability and compliance of the product. Span tables relate primarily to mullions, transoms and door stiles.

Span Tables for all products are available on EBOSS.

Three simple steps for using a Span Table

1. Select the centres of your product. Centres refers to glass width between mullions and stiles i.e. panel width e.g. 1500mm centres as highlighted on the Span Table below

2. Select the column in the Span Table relating to the wind zone, the product will be located in e.g. Very high wind zone as highlighted on the Span Table below

3. Select the intersection on the Span Table where the centre and the wind zone meet. This will give you the maximum height you are able to achieve using this product e.g. 2245mm maximum height as highlighted on the Span Table below

ThermalHEART® Technology

Our innovative ThermalHEART® technology uses a high-performance polyamide insulator at the core of the aluminium system, reducing heat transfer through the frame. The result is a warmer, healthier interior environment, achieved without compromising the clean architectural lines aluminium is known for.

ThermalHEART® is available across four ranges, with each range sharing the same core design principles for exceptional versatility. The three standard E2/AS1 installation ranges can be used within one project while maintaining a consistent aesthetic and meeting performance requirements.

Benefits of ThermalHEART® technology include

Thermal efficiency

ThermalHEART® insulates the window system which helps to keep cool temperatures out in colder months, and decrease solar gain in warmer months, assisting in yearround warmth and comfort.

High performance

A comprehensive, highly versatile product suite engineered to maintain strong performance even in demanding weather conditions.

Year round comfort

ThermalHEART® technology minimises heat flow through the frame, creating a more stable internal temperature in your home.

Versatility

Our three standard ThermalHeart+® ranges share the same core design principles, giving the ability to mix-and-match within one project and maintain a consistent look.

Aesthetics

Clean, modern lines, and the ability to choose different colours on the interior and exterior when using Metro Series ThermalHeart+® and APL Architectural Series ThermalHeart+®

Aids in managing the risk of condensation forming

ThermalHEART® technology can aid in managing the risk of condensation forming, therefore reducing the risk of mould growth.

Your windows and doors are a complete thermal system with each component contributing to the overall performance and comfort of your home. Some profiles in a ThermalHeart+® window or door system are not required to be thermally improved. As a home’s thermal performance is determined by the whole house lot of joinery, this doesn’t impact the overall thermal efficiency of a house.

AGP Glass

AGP Glass

Architectural Glass Products (AGP) is designed to work alongside APL frames for a complete high-performance window system. AGP and APL are both exclusively available through the Altherm, First, and Vantage network nationwide.

Glass Selection

Glass selection for residential projects has now been simplified through changes to the Building Code H1 energy efficiency standards.

Wherever you are in New Zealand, your project will meet the required R and U values if you use The AGP System® glass with either Solux-E® or Solux Ultra®, alongside ThermalHeart+® frames.

Glass Types

In addition to code-compliant and thermally-compliant Low-E glass (Solux-E® and Solux Ultra®), the following glass types are offered for specialised use or on customer or designer request:

Tinted Glass

This is mainly chosen to further reduce solar heat gain and glare inside a building. Available in grey, green and bronze.

Reflective Glass

This has a mirror-like appearance and reflects and absorbs a major proportion of solar short-wave radiation. Markedly reduces visibility from outside to inside the building. Available in grey, dark blue and bronze.

Toughened Safety Glass

Available in most glass types to meet human impact safety requirements.

Laminated Safety Glass

Panes consist of two or more sheets of glass permanently bonded together offering safety in conformity with human impact safety requirements, and increased acoustic performance.

Obscured Glass

Patterned or etched for privacy purposes.

Obscured glass options include Narrow Reeded, Opalucent, Acid Etch, Grey Acid Etch, Stippolite, Mistlite and Cathedral.

APL Architectural Series combined with The AGP System® with Solux-E®

The AGP System®

The AGP System® is a double-glazed unit which is made using world-class components and industry leading, global technology. AGP developed this state-of-the-art product for New Zealand's varying conditions. The AGP System® is comprised of four key components;

Solux-E® or Solux Ultra®

AGP offer two Low-E options that contribute towards the thermal efficiency of your home. Both Low-E coatings are virtually invisible, and are applied to the inside surface of the exterior glass pane, protecting it from the elements.

Argon gas

An inert gas which is used as an insulator to create an additional barrier to heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, improving thermal performance.

ATS - Architectural Thermal Spacer®

A warm-edge spacer that bonds the two panes of glass together forming a double-glazed unit.

ATS - Architectural Thermal Spacer® creates an airtight bond to ensure the best retention of argon gas.

Bonded to glass and secondary sealant

A proven formulation used to ensure durable bonding between glass panes. This creates an airtight seal for the space between panes, providing additional protection for the primary seal.

AGP Glass

AGP's Low-E products

Solux-E®

Year-round comfort and energy savings

Solux-E® has a low emissivity (Low-E) coating applied to the glass, which is virtually invisible. The Solux-E® coating reflects the heat back to the inside, reducing winter heat loss through the glass. The reverse happens during summer helping to limit overheating.

Solux-E® is standard with The AGP System®

Year-round comfort

Solux-E® works to minimise heat flow allowing you to stay warmer through winter and cooler through summer. You'll have less warm air escaping in the winter and less heat entering through the glass in summer without the need to use tinted glass. The measure of heat entering through the glass is known as the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC).

Solux-E® helps to retain heat, achieving a more stable home temperature and yearround comfort.

Maximises natural daylight

Solux-E® provides excellent Visible Light Transmission (VLT)* and clarity, keeping the view clear and spaces light and bright.

Smaller energy bills

A more constant temperature means less energy used to heat and cool your space, providing energy savings year-round. Reduced energy consumption puts less demand on New Zealand’s power grid, reducing the environmental footprint of your project.

Protects against fading

Solux-E® reduces the amount of damaging light coming through the glass reducing fading in soft furnishings and fabrics.

APL Metro Series with The AGP System® with Solux Ultra®

Take your project's comfort a step further with an upgrade to:

Solux Ultra®

The perfect blend of clarity, overheating control and fading protection

Due to its superior solar control, Solux Ultra® is the best choice to control overheating and is highly recommended for buildings with higher window-to-wall ratio (WWR).

Controls overheating

Stay comfortable inside with a further 23%* reduction in overheating. High insulation levels and large window areas in modern projects design can result in frequent overheating. Solux Ultra® works hard to let natural light stream in with less heat entering, reducing overheating and also minimising the need to use air conditioning.

Protects against fading

Solux Ultra® delivers an additional 10%* increase in fading control, protecting your interior furnishings to keep them looking better for longer.

Retains heat

Solux Ultra® reflects the warm air back into the building, rather than escaping through the glass, retaining heat by a further 9%*. This reduces the energy needed to keep your space warm in cooler months.

*For statistics and technical data, please refer to comparison data in section 1.17

Maximises natural daylight

The brilliantly neutral colour of Solux Ultra® sets it apart from other Low-E glass and ensures you enjoy natural light and unblemished views all while delivering improved temperature and fading control.

Aged Care and Education

Aged Care Sector

APL Window Solutions offers a range of products designed to comply with New Zealand standards and design best practice for aged care facilities and homes occupied by the elderly. All products are available with high-performance glass from AGP, for a complete window system.

New Zealand has an increased demand for aged care facilities and appropriately designed products because of the rise in our ageing population. The design emphasis is on enhancing secure, healthy and comfortable environments that are easy to move around in. We have a number of products designed to make living easier for the elderly. APL is a Lifemark product partner.

Secure ventilation

■ Ventilation can be a problem in homes occupied by the elderly and often windows are kept closed for long periods. Passive ventilation options are a good solution, offering year-round comfort.

Enhanced accessibility

■ Flush sills reduce tripping hazards and cater for walking frame and wheelchair use. Available for hinged doors, sliding doors, and near-flush interior sliding doors (Magnum Doors)

■ Lifemark recommends minimum door widths of 810mm clear opening.

■ A flush entry door threshold is desirable with recessed drain or elevated floating deck for a level entry (generous overhead weather cover recommended)

■ Near-flush interior track available for Magnum sliding doors

Convenient hardware

■ Security and ease of operation of door and window handles and locks are priorities in ‘New Zealand Standard NZS4121:2001 Design for Access and Mobility-Buildings and Associated Facilities.’ We offer a range of hardware suitable for the aged care sector.

■ The Urbo Helix window fastener with no visible flap or wedge is recommended as a user-friendly choice for the elderly.

Interior comfort - thermal options

■ In colder parts of the country, products from APL’s high thermal efficiency ranges need to be considered. These include Residential and Metro Series ThermalHeart+® windows and doors with thermal insulation to optimise interior temperatures and comfort, including Metro Centrafix®

■ Klima® uPVC windows are rated to a maximum 6 energy stars under WEERS (Window Energy Efficiency Rating System) when used with Low-E double

Glazing for interior comfort

■ Aged care facilities often have limited cross ventilation, increasing the need for higher solar control to reduce overheating and operating costs.

■ The AGP System® with Solux Ultra® works hard to admit natural light while limiting heat gain, avoiding the need for tinted glass that reduces clarity. As glass drives most heat transfer in buildings, correct specification is critical for longterm performance.

Aged Care and Education

Education Sector

APL has partnered with Massey University to understand the education sector better and identify the best products for schools and tertiary institutions. As a result, we have created some guidelines for product specification in the Education Sector.

Healthy ventilation

■ Optimum levels of ventilation for student health, comfort and learning are vitally important

■ The Covid-19 pandemic has underlined the benefits of continuous fresh air circulation through open windows in classrooms

■ The ‘Healthy Schools’ project part-sponsored by APL and carried out by Massey University’s School of Engineering and Advanced Technology carried out extensive monitoring of air quality in numerous schools, and tracked the build-up of CO2 under a variety of conditions

■ Excessive CO2 concentrations are known to lead to cognitive impairment. Now, however, concerns over preventing cross-infection from student carriers of Covid-19 are a new driver in the move to optimise fresh air in the learning environment

■ Covid-19 has transformed the design and operational management of learning environments to ensure consistent air quality is maintained

■ Studies have shown that even with students wearing masks and distancing in a classroom layout an airborne virus from droplets and micro droplets will spread dangerously with closed windows

■ With windows open the viral concentration from droplets and micro droplets remains densest near the infected student but the contaminants are diluted in the rest of the room

■ There are many window formats appropriate for education facilities e.g. high level, remotely controlled ashes, hopper windows, awning and sliding windows, as well as passive ventilation options

■ Trickle ventilators can help provide a useful level of background ventilation. Options include Aerovent (head or transom of fixed windows), Sashvent (bottom rail of awning windows), and Ventient (range of installations possible).

Open windows are the easiest form of ventilation.
Ventient with acoustic baffle in APL Architectural Series window.
Aerovent in transom. Sashvent is a convenient and straight forward passive ventilator.

Strength and durability

■ Windows and doors must be able to cope with heavy use. They must be commercial grade in order to offer good durability

■ Ministry of Education guidelines specify windows with minimum 40mm frame and doors with minimum 50mm panel thickness

■ APL recommends Metro Series windows, which have a 40mm frame platform. These can be coupled with Magnum Series hinged doors which have a 50mm panel thickness and a wide stile option which allows the use of heavy-duty 60mm backset lever handles and locks.

■ For extra strength and resistance to impact, it is recommended that bottom rails on hinged and sliding doors be doubled in height with a rail extender

Enhanced accessibility

■ Mobility-friendly thresholds for hinged doors are available as well as for flush sill sliding doors and near-flush interior sliding doors (Magnum Doors). This also reduces tripping and falls.

Interior comfort

■ In colder parts of the country, Metro Series ThermalHeart+® may need to be considered

■ Commercial systems that include sun control fins may have a place on medium to high rise education projects

■ Reduce glare and improve overall thermal and solar comfort within classrooms with AGP's Solux-E® + Tint range.

Social Housing and Multi-Unit

Social Housing

Social or public housing has its own set of distinctive requirements, with window and door products that are robust and contribute to a safe, healthy and adequately ventilated interior environment.

New Zealand has a large and growing social housing stock. Modern and more convenient windows are being retrofitted into older dwellings; fully customised and optimum product ranges are being specified in new builds. On this page are some of our recommendations for products suitable for the social housing sector.

Residential Series and ThermalHeart+®

■ Residential Series and Residential Series ThermalHeart+® ranges are good options as they combine robust frames and profiles with economy of pricing. They are suitable for a wide spectrum of housing projects. Residential Series ThermalHeart+® offers extra thermal efficiency in colder parts of the country.

Metro Series suitability

■ Because Metro Series windows and doors are rated for heavy duty applications they may be appropriate in situations where hard wearing or robust treatment are likely to be encountered. They are also suitable for larger formats and more exposed locations. Metro Series also has a ThermalHeart+® option available for colder environments.

Specific products

■ Secure and consistent background ventilation is important in living spaces in social housing. Factors influencing this relate to potential tenant turnover and the State commitment to a high quality interior environment. Passive ventilation options and robust hardware need careful consideration.

Glazing suitability

■ Where maintenance allowances are minimal you need a robust, high-performance glazing solution. Toughened glass is heat treated to increase its strength compared to ordinary annealed glass. It is resistant to impact and thermal stress fractures. When it does break, it disintegrates into blunt fragments reducing the risk of injury.

AGP's low-e toughened glass, such as Solux-E®, will meet specification requirements for social housing.

Multi-Unit projects and Apartments

Multi-unit projects and Apartments

Multi-unit developments are on the rise, in part through the encouragement of Government and local authority policies. The projects are seen as an effective way of addressing New Zealand’s housing shortage. Such developments offer scope for the use of a wide range of APL products influenced primarily by project budget, marketing considerations and target purchaser. Some of the products suitable for multi-unit application include those outlined here.

Healthy ventilation

■ Optimum levels of ventilation for occupant health and comfort are important, as well as for the prevention of mould and mildew

■ The Covid-19 pandemic has underlined the benefits of fresh air circulation in all shared domestic environments and enclosed access ways and common areas

■ Studies have shown that airborne virus transmission from droplets and micro droplets will spread dangerously with closed windows. Open windows or a level of background, passive ventilation are important.

■ Trickle ventilators can help provide a useful level of background ventilation. Options include Aerovent (head or transom of fixed windows), Sashvent (bottom rail of awning windows), and Ventient (range of installations possible).

Enhanced accessibility

■ Mobility-friendly thresholds for hinged doors are available as well as for flush sill sliding doors and near-flush interior sliding doors (Magnum Doors). This also reduces tripping and falls.

Management of overheating

■ An increased focus in thermal performance over recent years has also resulted in higher risk of overheating. With clear or tinted IGUs, apartments have been trapping heat and significantly overheating the internal spaces. High performance low-e glass, such as AGP's Solux Ultra®, is designed to combat this solar heat gain.

■ With population density increasing, consideration for acoustic performance is becoming more prevalent. Thicker glass substrates can be used and/or laminated glass components. However, colour rending of glass and visual light transmission (VLT) remain important for visibility.

Surface finishing

Powdercoating

New Zealand’s most popular surface finish for windows and doors. It’s a baked-on coating that’s tough and durable and comes in a wide range of colours. Powder options are as follows:

Duralloy Plus+ / Protexture: Used on most domestic and smaller commercial projects. Carries a 15-year film and colour integrity warranty. Suitable for applications more than 10m from high tide level. Protexture powder coatings from the Duralloy range have been introduced for use on entrance doors. Are for areas where high mar and scuff resistance is required.

Duratec: A highly durable polyester system for more severe coastal and multi-storey exposures. For properties greater than 10m from high tide level. Carries a 20-year film integrity warranty (Colour integrity warranty will be less in duration and colour dependant).

Fluoroset FP: This is a 100% fluoropolymer powder coating with outstanding colour retention and film performance. It is designed for use on headline commercial-type projects in environmentally challenging locations. Fluoroset FP offers a 20year warranty on colour, film integrity and gloss retention.

Popular Colours: A colour range is available which has 40 colours. These are more economical in price than lesser sought colours and have more readily available colour-matching hardware. A booklet of over 80 powdercoat colours is also available.

Chromate-free: APL has a chromate-free pretreatment for the powdercoating of its aluminium extrusions. Toxic chromate formulations have been phased out and non-hazardous pre-treatments adopted. This upgrade is part of a wide-ranging APL strategy to reduce its environmental footprint.

Anodising

Anodising is a very durable and colour-fast finish that has been proven over many decades. It is popular in high end residential developments where its durability and metallic sheen are seen as desirable attributes. APL offers the ‘frost’ finish as standard.

There are several options for colours and film thickness: Silver, in 12 and 25 microns. Bronze in light, medium or dark, 12 and 25 microns. Black, in 25 microns only. Champagne, in 25 microns only.

For properties in coastal, industrial or other corrosive environments, 25 microns is recommended, and may even be required to qualify for a warranty. (Note: the anodised coating has a 10-year warranty for 12 micron anodising, and 20 years for 25 microns.)

Anodising is unavailable in Residential ThermalHeart+®

Care, maintenance and warranty

Joinery care and maintenance

Window and door frames should be cleaned each time your windows and doors are washed in order to remove atmospheric dirt and grime. A soft brush with warm water and a mild household detergent are recommended. Rinse with fresh water.

■ DO remove obvious deposits as they occur including cement-based products

■ DO mask windows if painting. Use only methylated spirits, isopropanol or water to remove fresh paint splashes

■ DO NOT use abrasive steel wool, scrapers, scouring liquids or aggressive solvents, thinners, petrol, etc. These will all damage the windows and doors and the surface finish

■ DO NOT expose your joinery to excessive heat, heaters or hot air guns as these may damage the surface finish of the joinery.

Cleaning once every three months should be sufficient, however, in coastal or industrial environments more frequent washing will be required. The frequency of washing in these harsh environments should be determined by the degree of salt and/or other contaminant build up on the windows and doors, but ideally should be at least once a month. Washing should include the rinsing of all window and door cavities to avoid salt build up and corrosion.

Powdercoated joinery can be damaged by some sunscreens. Avoid touching the surface where possible and wash any sunscreen residue off powdercoated joinery immediately after contact.

Warranty

Our Windows and Doors comply with the New Zealand Building Code and the relevant New Zealand standards, NZS4211, Performance of Windows, and NZS4223, Glazing in Buildings – Parts 1-4.

The window systems are extensively tested to perform in New Zealand’s diverse weather conditions, meeting requirements for strength, deflection, weathertightness and air leakage. A warranty for all windows and doors is provided under normal conditions of use against failure of materials and workmanship for a period of 5 years.

The surface finish of aluminium extrusions is covered by a separate performance warranty which is dependent on the actual finish selected. A hardware/componentry warranty is offered against defects in manufacturing, functionality and surface finish for a period of 5 years, providing care and maintenance guidelines have been followed (plated ‘soft’ finishes excluded).

AGP Glass care and maintenance

After house construction is completed make sure any stickers and cork/foam pads have been removed. Rinse the glass thoroughly with clean water to ensure that builder’s debris and dirt are removed.

Cleaning once every three months is recommended for your glazing. In coastal or industrial environments more frequent washing will be required.

To clean your glass, we recommend soaking the glass surfaces with clean water to loosen dirt and debris. Then wash the glass using clean water, glass cleaning squeegee or clean cloth, and one of the recommended cleaning products listed below. Rinse with clean water and wipe dry with a clean squeegee ensuring the glass is dry and water droplets are removed to avoid permanently marking the surfaces.

Recommended products for cleaning glass are:

■ Glasscorp Universal Glass & Mirror Cleaner GCGC / GC5 / GC20 / GC200 (glasscorp.co.nz)

■ Or 10-parts clean water, 1-part white vinegar

■ Or 9-parts clean water, 1-part Methylated Spirits

Do not use abrasive steel wool, scrapers, scouring liquids or aggressive solvents, thinners or products containing hydrofluoric acid, fluorine derivatives, any abrasive elements, or products with high acidic or alkaline content. These are likely to damage the glass.

Warranty

AGP back their world-class double-glazing products with a 12-year warranty – two years longer than the industry standard or legislative requirements. AGP’s double-glazed units have been designed and successfully tested to perform in New Zealand’s most diverse conditions.

IGUs supplied by AGP meet, or exceed, the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code and New Zealand Standards NZS 4223, Glazing in buildings - Parts 1-4 included, Joint Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 4667 (Quality requirements for cutto-size and processed glass).
