ENERGY RATING SYSTEMS For many New Zealanders, energy efficiency is top of mind, and increasingly a factor when it comes to making purchasing decisions. The same concern applies to windows and doors, given the impact that glazing can have on the comfort levels of your home. WEERS allocates between one and six stars to a job lot of windows and doors. This system has been adopted by the Window Association of New Zealand and uses its own star logo.

The more stars, the better the thermal efficiency. Look for the WEERS rating on your window quote or in a separate report from your local manufacturer. ■■ Allows consumers to see the precise rating for a job lot of windows and doors ■■ Endorsed by the Window Association of New Zealand.

35

KLIMA SERIES If thermal efficiency is among your top priorities, Klima Series is the smart bet.

Based on a premium series from Europe by KÖmmerling and optimised for Kiwi conditions, Klima is the ultimate performer when it comes to keeping out the winter cold. Being made of highly durable uPVC, Klima Series windows and doors can also withstand the harshest sunlight.

Features include: ■■ Thermal efficiency: perfect for use in the New Zealand climate, particularly where there are cold temperatures ■■ Healthier homes: an affordable investment to create a warmer, healthier home ■■ Noise reduction: offers very good levels of noise reduction ■■ Durability: can withstand New Zealand’s harshest sunlight without discolouring or degrading, due to the fact it is made of highly durable uPVC. FINISHES

INTENSITY

You can never have too many options, which is why we offer a comprehensive range of colours and finishings.

FADING AND BOWING

MANNEX A low sheen surface finish highly resistant to marking and scuffing – specifically for use on entrance doors. There are a wide variety of colours available. Please ask your manufacturer for a colour brochure to see our full range of Mannex powdercoat options. Please note that the finish of the Mannex powdercoating will look slightly different to the powdercoating on your aluminium joinery.

There are six bold bright colours in this Dulux DURATEC range, ensuring excellent colour retention and are exceptionally hard wearing.

Dark colours may not be suitable for doors that are exposed to prolonged direct sunlight as this may cause the colour to fade, so careful consideration needs to be made when choosing your entrance door colour/s. Doors with a thermal break built into them may experience slight temporary bowing due to the difference in temperature between the inside and outside of the door, especially when exposed to direct sunlight. We stress that this is only a temporary effect and the door will revert back to its normal shape as the aluminium cools. This may occur primarily with dark colours, so can be minimised by selecting lighter external colours or increasing cover over the door area.

See our Entrance Door brochure for further information

SURFACE FINISHES POWDERCOATING You can never have too many options when it comes to choosing a colour for joinery – which explains why powdercoating is such a popular surface finish for Kiwi homeowners. No other treatment offers such a diverse palette. And when it comes to Altherm, colour is just one of the alternatives to mull over. Matt finishes, for example, have been introduced as an alternative to satin for the popular colours, offering a more consistent look. And there’s also a Mannex finish that creates a low sheen surface highly resistant to marking and scuffing – perfect for entrance doors. For the majority of residential developments, the highly popular DURALLOY powder grade will be more than adequate. However, for buildings in particularly exposed locations, such as coastal holiday homes vulnerable to salt spray, additional protection makes sense. Premium grade DURATEC powder offers more advanced weathering capability and a superior warranty, and has proved popular for high-end houses and apartments near the beach. (It may well be required, in fact, depending on where your building project is located in relation to coastal corrosion zones. Please see our Care and Maintenance brochure.) Finally: when you are choosing your aluminium joinery colours, always assess swatches in natural light.

See our Popular Colours brochure for further information

60

ANODISING

Silver Black

Anodised finishing is a highly popular choice for architectural projects, and with good reason: that glowing matt sheen looks terrific on aluminium. As for colours and film thicknesses, there are plenty of options: Silver, in 12 and 25 microns. Bronze in light, medium or dark, 12 and 25 microns. Black, 25 microns only. Champagne, in 25 microns only. For properties in coastal, industrial or other corrosive environments, 25 microns is recommended, and may even be required to qualify for a warranty. (Note: the anodised coating has a 10-year warranty for 12 micron anodising, and 20 years for 25 microns.)

GLASS OPTIONS

Clear Single Glazed Glass 4mm clear

Glazing choices are an important option to consider. Options to reduce UV, minimise heat loss, to all year-round comfortable decisions that impact your project. Thermal performance is becoming increasingly important to many homeowners. We offer a variety of performance glass options to suit most requirements. Please contact your local manufacturer for further advice and information.

Clear float glass is transparent and offers high visible light transmittance. As such most Ultra Violet (UV) light and solar heat passes through it. Economical has a high heat loss in winter. Clear but Single, Glazed Glass

Double glazing offers year-round thermal advantages. Benefits include significant reduction in UV light and a good retention of internal heat. As a bonus, it also dampens sound. Within the general category of double glazing, there are plenty of options to further boost your home’s thermal efficiency. Low E (the ‘e’ stands for emissivity) glass, for example, enhances the insulation value for a modest premium. Further wins can be had by using argon gas in your double glazing. Argon creates an additional barrier to heat loss and heat absorption, achieving good thermal performance gains.

Warmth is one thing, but safety is key. All Altherm windows and doors come with glass that complies with NZS 4223, the glazing standard cited in the New Zealand Building Code.

LET THERE BE LIGHT Let there be light – and plenty of stud height. Those were the overwhelming priorities for the owners of this award-winning, Cameron Cotton-designed Mt Maunganui home.

The result achieved by Cotton in close collaboration with his clients is a house dominated by a stunning double-height living and kitchen area, with views all the way through to the garden. Declaring the house ‘best residential new home’ in the Bay of Plenty, the judges of the Architectural Design Awards described those views as “heroic”, but the tag could just as easily be applied to the joinery and glazing. Massive floor-to-ceiling Metro Series windows and doors were required to create such a spectacular space, all bolstered by ThermalHEART technology with low-E and Argon-filled double glazing to create a comfortable interior in the winter months. If the owners have one regret, in fact, it’s that they didn’t stick with the thermally-efficient theme. “In retrospect, we should have used ThermalHEART in the rest of the house as well,” say the couple, who went for standard Metro Series products with clear double glazing elsewhere. (Products used include sliding doors, hinged doors, fixed windows and awning windows, all powder-coated Matt Black.) But that’s a mere aside. Because whatever the weather throws, all that wonderful glazing and that heady stud height make this an inspirational home to inhabit. “The floor-to-ceiling windows at the front and rear mean we have views of the front section, and can look right through to the back fence. That’s quite uplifting – especially on a cloudy day.”

EASY LIVING Long gone are the days when group homes were built to a ‘one-sizefits-all’ set of plans – as shown by this stylish and idiosyncratic house at Richmond, near Nelson.

Custom-designed by a major firm, the home includes an eclectic mix of windows and doors from the Altherm range, including both Residential Series and Metro Series products. A stunning Plasma entry door in Mannex Navy Blue sets the scene. Complemented by a Metro Series frame in Matt Black, including sidelights and overlights, the effect is clean, architectural and robust, thanks to the heavy-duty styrofoam core that helps give all Plasma doors their strength and excellent acoustic and thermal qualities. Throughout the rest of the house, joinery has been deployed in ways that are both attractive and highly practical. One example: a set of wideopening bi-folds between the dining space and the covered outdoor relaxation zone includes the clever Altherm lay-back feature, meaning they can be folded back rather than project on to the patio. The result is an obstruction-free opening, allowing the owners to ‘clear the decks’ and enjoy those legendary Nelson outdoor summers.

On the outside, the designers went for white fascias around all the windows and doors, creating a sharp contrast with the dark weatherboards and Matt Black frames. Corner soakers and soffits were also painted white for added impact. One design request the owners insisted on from the start was for a walk-in scullery. Handily, this cosy food preparation area includes a two-panel bi-fold window for easy transfer to the barbeque area immediately outside. Now that’s easy living!

ADVENTURE IN A SMALL BOX That’s how the architect describes this retreat near Punakaiki. Designed by James Warren of Upoko, this six metre by six metre upscale cabin is dwarfed by its bush setting. But what it lacks in physical size it more than makes up for in terms of capturing the essence of West Coast living. Immediately beyond the building platform rise lush tree ferns and mature nikau, and that sense of camping in the heart of the forest is enhanced by the use of wide APL Architectural Series sliders downstairs, and a Metro Series sliding door upstairs. In the living area, access to the outdoors is simplified by the absence of obtrusive aluminium corner posts, while

the tracking system allows panels to fully retract back over walls, creating the appearance of ‘disappearing doors’. The owners previously spent years holidaying simply on the site, and wanted a bach that maintained that unfussy, natural approach. Timber appears everywhere. The upper sleeping floor, for example, is clad in warm cedar, which is nicely matched by anodised light bronze joinery from the Metro Series. Downstairs, they’ve gone for a different color, choosing anodised Silver joinery for the heavy-duty, 2.5 metre APL Architectural Series sliders. The result is a beautifully simple box in the bush – just add adventure.

IF YOU CAN SEE THE MOUNTAIN‌ When someone goes to the trouble of installing home glazing so stupendously large it has to be fitted by a crane truck, you just know they have a good reason. In the case of this wonderfully transparent farm home near New Plymouth, there were in fact two compelling arguments: Mt Taranaki and the ocean. To capture both the stunning mountain backdrop and sea view in front, designer Paul Rust went big on floorto-ceiling glass, using the super-strong APL Architectural Series windows and doors in heights of 3.3 metres. Continuing the no-half-measures theme, more than 80 per cent of the exterior envelope of the living area and bedrooms is glazed.

Inevitably, there were challenges working on such a scale, and particularly careful thought had to be given to the manufacture of two large banks of stacking sliders for both sides of the pavillion. With six panels involved and a combined length of over 13 metres, each bank tipped the scales at well over two tonnes. Having decided to assemble the units on site rather than at the factory, the Altherm manufacturers then employed that aforementioned crane and a sucker bank to fit the panels in place.

To minimise upstands at floor level, the sliders were recessed into the floor pad, creating a flush sill effect. That same seamless look continues on the house’s exterior, where the local Altherm manufacturer fitted colourmatched facings between window units and at the four outside corners of the main wing. To frame all of the clear double-glazing (the glass has a laminated inner pane and Argon fill), the designer specified DURATEC Matt Black powdercoating for the joinery, while an Arctic White Plasma door makes a crisp statement at the entrance. The final result is a dwelling that is both bold and sleek, befitting those contrasting views of mountain and sea.
