Talbot County is borders the Chesapeake Bay with five river systems, agricultural fields, and forested wetlands that provide a stable base for selected business growth. Talbot County target industries include aviation and marine services, agriculture, food production, bio and life science, small manufacturing, and environmental services. The county’s private sector industries generate $2.0 billion in economic output.
Located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore with access to the I-95 corridor, Talbot County offers a strategic location within 70 miles of Washington, D.C. and has access to more than 90 federal labs and research facilities within a 90-mile radius. The area is in commuting distance to the Annapolis/Baltimore/Washington, D.C. corridor and the Mid-Atlantic market. Eight industrial parks offer secure sites ready for the development process with infrastructure capacity and access to major roadways. Talbot County offers the lowest real property tax rate in the state and the second lowest income tax rate.

Talbot County offers eight business parks and five commercial shopping centers, all located in Easton. The Town of Easton provides for water and sewer capacity, high-speed internet, cable, electric and natural gas. The business parks are immediately accessible to U.S. Route 50 with links to U.S. Routes 301 and 13 for north/south transport and I-97 and I-95 for access to Mid-Atlantic markets.
The Easton Technology Center is located adjacent to the Easton Airport and offers Class A office space on two- to three-acre sites with bundled parcels available up to 60 acres. UPON ENTERING TALBOT COUNTY, one cannot help but notice the lush green fields of soybeans and corn of summer. Cutting through the county’s 269 square miles of land are Talbot’s four rivers: the Miles, Choptank, Wye, and Tred Avon. Along with these rivers, there are hundreds of tributaries, which add over 600 miles of shoreline. This idyllic landscape provides opportunities for a wide variety of outdoor recreation, from water sports and hunting to cycling, picnicking, golf, and ice skating. Thanks to a prime location along the Atlantic Flyway, autumn in Talbot County is heralded every year by the arrival of flocks of Canada geese, ducks and other migratory birds.
To fully appreciate the history of the county, one must explore the panoramic waterways and view the eighteenth and nineteenth-century estates whose inhabitants depended on the rivers for commerce, communication, and transportation.
The exact founding date of Talbot County is lost to time. The earliest recorded reference to the county dates to 1661, when a writ was issued to its sheriff. The county is named for Lady Grace Talbot, the sister of Cecil Calvert, Second Baron Baltimore, and the wife of Sir Robert Talbot, an Irish statesman. Originally, the county was much larger, encompassing all the land between the Choptank and Chester Rivers. However, the territory was deemed to be too large, and a portion of the
northern end of the county was lopped off and reorganized as Queen Anne’s County in 1706.
The town of Easton was created to be the county seat of Talbot County. After the separation and reformation of Queen Anne’s County, a new courthouse closer to the geographic center of the newly reshaped Talbot County was needed. The two acres that would become Easton were chosen for their central location and the ease with which they could be reached from any part of the county. A courthouse was completed for the 1712 court session, and the village of Talbot Court House sprang up around it. As time passed and the village grew into a town, it took on the name Easton, for its geographical location in proximity to the neighboring town of St. Michaels. The streets named North, East, South, and West are the old village’s original boundaries.
Very little of colonial Easton remains today. Numerous fires swept through the town over the years, destroying most of the original wooden buildings. The courthouse for which the town was built was demolished and rebuilt in 1794. The new, larger building still serves as Easton’s courthouse to this day.
Hotels and businesses grew around the
courthouse and by 1810 Easton had become the largest town on the Eastern Shore. Easton Point, located at the confluence of two branches of the Tred Avon River, became a busy port—in 1817 the steamboat Surprise began its run from Baltimore to Annapolis to the point.
Easton played its part to support the U.S. war effort during the Second World War, hosting a small military airfield constructed just outside of town. The airfield was used primarily for aerial reconnaissance and submarine spotting, but also contained a small prisoner of war camp. German soldiers, captured from the European Theater, were put to work on base construction projects, as well as being loaned out to local citizens for farm work. After the war ended, the military handed over the airport to the county government, where it still serves the local community today as Easton Airport.
The 1950s brought the Bay Bridge and the new Route 50 to connect the bridge to the ocean. Fortuitously, highway commission planners abandoned their initial plan to run the new highway straight through town, connecting it to Washington Street. Wrapping Route 50 around Easton’s edge allowed the town to maintain the charming character of its downtown district. Today, those ambitious building projects have allowed Easton to grow and access the major metropolises across the bay while retaining its personality and heritage.

Historic homes and attractions, museums, recreational and cultural facilities make this area attractive to all ages and provide a soughtafter quality of life. Easton has faced many changes over the years, but it has always been the vibrant center of commerce and politics in Talbot County.
St. Michaels has been an active port in Maryland since the town was founded in the 1770s. It gets its nickname, the “town that fooled the British,” from a curious incident during the War of 1812. Before dawn on August 10th, 1813, a British fleet under the command of Admiral George Cockburn assaulted the town in the Battle of St. Michaels, with the intention of crippling the town and its shipyards. Despite their superior firepower, the British were unable to do any significant damage. Legend holds that this failure was due to ingenuity on behalf of the local townsfolk, who supposedly dimmed their lights and hung lanterns in trees outside of town, causing the British ships to overshoot their targets. The blackout was supposedly so effective that only one house was struck. That home, known as the Cannonball House, still stands in St. Michaels, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Over the years, the economy of St. Michaels was based on shipbuilding and seafood. Log canoes built in St. Michaels and used as workboats in the 1800s evolved into the sport of log canoe
racing later in the century. Today, as in so much of the Chesapeake Bay region, fishing has given way to tourism as the primary economic driver in this picturesque port town where vessels visit from all over the world. The world-class Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum captures the history of life on this beautiful estuary.
St. Michaels offers quiet charm and a safe, peaceful haven for a daytrip, weekend, or longer vacation. Strolling down the streets of town gives visitors an opportunity to step back in time. Many of the shops on Talbot Street are historic houses which have been converted into businesses. Historic sites, enchanting inns, bed & breakfasts, and museums give you the feeling of what was once a thriving colonial village and is now home to many who are a bit resistant to the hustle and bustle of modern life. Many fine restaurants, world-class accommodations, and interesting shops add to the ambiance, making St. Michaels a visitor’s delight.
In addition to shopping and dining, the beautiful Miles River and St. Michaels Harbor offer a unique experience to boaters, sportsmen, and outdoors enthusiasts of all stripes. The town is bordered by the Miles River to the east and Broad Creek to the west. For the serious sportsman, excellent fishing and guided hunting make St. Michaels a year-round getaway. In a 14-mile stretch between St. Michaels and Tilghman Island, there are also quaint little villages to explore such as Claiborne, Wittman, and Sherwood.
A charming, tree-lined and water bound village, Oxford has a
population of less than a thousand. As the oldest town in Talbot County and one of the oldest towns in Maryland, it has a long history of maritime activity. It is also the home of the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry, America’s oldest privately owned ferry service, which has been in existence since the town was founded over 330 years ago.
Oxford marks the year 1683 as its official founding, when the Maryland General Assembly formally designated it as a seaport, although it was in existence for perhaps twenty years before that date. A year later, Oxford and Annapolis, then known as Anne Arundel’s Towne, were selected as the only ports of entry for the entire Maryland province. Up until the Revolutionary War, Oxford was a prominent international shipping center surrounded by wealthy tobacco plantations. Today, the town is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
Notable early citizens included Robert Morris, Sr., a Liverpool shipping firm’s agent who greatly influenced Oxford’s growth; his son Robert Morris, Jr., who was known as the “Financier of the Revolution;” Rev. Thomas Bacon, a clergyman who wrote the first compilation of the laws of Maryland; Jeremiah Banning, a sea captain, war hero, and statesman; Matthew Tilghman, known as the “Father of Statehood” and the “Patriarch of Maryland;” and Colonel Tench Tilghman, aide-de-camp to George Washington, best known for delivering the message to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia of Cornwallis’ surrender.
The American Revolution marked the end of Oxford’s glory. Gone were the British ships with their variety of imported goods. Tobacco was replaced by wheat as the cash crop. Businesses went bankrupt, cattle grazed in the streets, and the population dwindled.
After the Civil War, Oxford emerged from its long slumber to nearly a century of a new prosperity signaled by completion of the railroad in 1871 and improved methods of canning and packing which opened national markets for oysters from the Chesapeake’s bountiful beds. Business boomed, houses sprung up like never before, and tourists and boaters arrived in droves. But it was not to last. In the early part of the 20th century, the oyster beds played out, the packing houses closed, and the railway and steamships eventually disappeared. Oxford became a sleepy little town once more, inhabited mainly by the watermen who work the waters of the Tred Avon.
Oxford today is still a waterman’s town but is enjoying a new resurgence based on tourism and leisure activities. Its quiet charm, fresh air, summer breezes, and clean water provide a haven from the hustle and bustle of city life for boaters, weekend visitors, and residents alike. You can watch the sailboats arriving from all over the bay or dine at the various local restaurants the town has to offer. If not staying at one of the marinas, visitors can check into one of the fine inns or bed and breakfasts, and then enjoy a stroll down Morris Street to the park, take a ride on the ferry, or see a play at the Community Center.
Bicycling is a favorite sport in Talbot County, with many picturesque back roads to tour, as well as bicycle lanes along the Oxford and St. Michaels roads. A bicycling weekend is a favorite getaway for many who visit this area. For those not interested in cycling, the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry provides a picturesque route across the Tred Avon River to Royal Oak and St. Michaels.

Tilghman Island is truly an old-fashioned waterman’s community. Located at the westernmost tip of Talbot County, Tilghman Island is a three-mile long stretch of lowland nestled between the Chesapeake Bay and the Choptank River. The only way to access the island is by the bridge at Knapps Narrows.
Tilghman was admitted to Talbot County in 1707. Its namesake is Matthew Tilghman, an American plantation owner and delegate to the Continental Congress who inherited the island in 1775. After his death, the island passed in and out of family hands until the 1840s, when it was sold and reorganized into a traditional community. Surrounded by water, residents of the island have always been dependent on the sea for their livelihood. Over the years, occupations have focused on crabbing, oyster tonging and dredging, seafood packing, and vegetable canning. Boatbuilding was a necessity on the island, two of the most popular types being the log canoe and the skipjack. Visitors delight in seeing those unique vessels at dock or under sail.
Housing varies from modest bungalows to new subdivisions and historic houses offering bed and breakfast with a view of the Choptank River. Rambling around the area by bicycle or car is a good way to see this quaint waterman’s village. Full service marinas make Tilghman Island a natural stopover for boaters, and few places in the state offer such an incredible fishing experience.
Trappe began as a small crossroads hamlet in the 1750s, becoming an incorporated municipality in 1827. While its exact origins are unknown, the town’s name is attributed to one of three possibilities: the local occurrences of wolf trapping, a Trappist monastery, or a particularly renowned local inn. The Trappe area produced two governors of Maryland within a ten year span: Samuel Stevens, who served from 1823 to 1825, and Daniel Martin, who served from 1828 to 1829 and from 1830 to 1831. In the early 1900s, it produced a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Frank “Home Run” Baker. Baker was a member of the Philadelphia Athletics team when he hit his celebrated home run against the New York Giants in the 1911 World Series.
At the north end of Main Street is the 15-acre Home Run Baker Park, used for Little League baseball, soccer, basketball, and other youth recreational activities. At the south end of Main Street is Nace Hopkins Memorial Park. There are two other public parks in Trappe and four churches, with many programs for children, youths, adults, and seniors.
Of great interest to local folks and area visitors is the Rural Life Museum of Trappe, MD., Inc. Founded in 2006, its slogan is “Building Our Future by Preserving Our Past.” The museum is home to many artifacts, pictures, and documents that illustrate the lives of local farmers, watermen, and cannery workers. The community of Cordova, located just east of Route 50 in the northern part of Talbot County is known for its peach and apple orchards and homes set in a peaceful rural area. The town began as a Catholic outpost in the colonial era and has seen recent development.
The community of Queen Anne straddles the borders of Talbot, Queen Anne’s, and Caroline Counties. The town was founded in 1882 when the Pennsylvania railroad built a station at the site. When Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia trains ran through this town, scows were used to haul grain from down river to the railroad. With approximately 250 residents, it remains mostly a quiet residential community, apart from the hustle and bustle of large town life.
In Wye Mills, the Wye Oak State Park is the hub of this tiny community hidden just off Route 50. The community owes its name and founding to the historic Wye Mill, the oldest continuously operated gristmill in the country. It still operates to this day, primarily as a living museum. The mill is one of five locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Miller, Wilton, and Wye historic houses, as well as the Old Wye Church. Constructed in 1721, it has served its local Episcopal congregation ever since. Fully restored to its colonial appearance in the late 1940s, it stands as a testament to local history.
There are many other small communities throughout the county that warrant your attention. Along St. Michaels Road, don’t miss Royal Oak, Neavitt, and Wittman. Scattered among these quaint towns there are many new housing developments. The road to Oxford also boasts several new communities, including Cooke’s Hope, the Easton Club, and Waverly.
