Iam honored and excited to serve as the 2023 Calvert County Chamber of Commerce Board Chair. Having lived in Calvert County my entire life, it is important to me to see our local businesses prosper. The mission of the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce is to be the influential voice of business, creating economic vitality by promoting the business community and its members. With record high inflation, ongoing supply chain and employee shortages, our community needs a strong ecosystem of business leaders and employers, now, more than ever. It is our goal to assist all members in their continued success and contributions to our community & quality of life. Our Chamber is one of the strongest voices for the businesses and organizations in our area. It is important for us to band together as a business community, celebrate our achievements and accomplishments, and promote policies that will address the challenges we face today. We advocate for all businesses, both large and small, on vital issues such as local initiatives, and state legislation. Whether your business is new to the area, or you have been around for a long time, please do not hesitate to contact us if we can assist in any way.

The Chamber Board of Directors is comprised of bright, professional men and women who work across all aspects of business and nonprofit organizations. They give their time, talent, and energy to make the Chamber an asset to its members. It takes more than the board, however, to make the Chamber work for all businesses at its full potential. Please consider joining one of our various committees. The Business Advisory Committee, Non-Profit Alliance, the Membership Engagement Committee, Women to Women, and the Events Planning Committee are eager to welcome new members who are ready to expand on the solid foundation that has been laid by past and present members. Joining a committee is only one way to be involved. I highly encourage you to attend our lively and successful, well-planned events. It is through introductions made at various gatherings that long-term, deep-rooted, and prosperous relationships are born. In 2023, we will re-envision some of our annual events to ensure members are getting the most out of their membership. Please read our e-blasts, fill out our surveys, and call us to discuss your ideas or needs. I eagerly await working with the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce members, Board of Directors, and our exceptional staff this year as we continue to gauge and creatively respond to the needs of our membership. WHAT IS THE CHAMBER?

Uniting business and professional people and firms

The Chamber is a non-profit, action oriented membership organization serving as the leading spokesman and representative for business in Calvert County.

A voluntary organization, it unites business and professional people and firms into a central agency which lends itself to improving business and building a better community. It directs its energies toward improving the community in which business is conducted.

The Chamber enables its members to accomplish collectively what no one could do individually. Its strength lies in attracting the greatest number of firms and individuals into a membership to create a pool of resources from which can be drawn ideas, energy and financing. The Chamber is People—its membership.

To best understand what the Chamber is, you need to know what it is not. The Chamber is not a government agency, a branch of City Hall, nor a political organization. It is also not a civic club or professional society, a social or service organization. Its budget depends almost entirely on the financial investment of its members.

What Is The Chamber?

The Chamber is a vital, dynamic organization with over 700 members and representatives. Collectively, it represents nearly 14,000 employees working together to develop a productive climate in Calvert County in which to conduct business. Most important, the Chamber is people - people just like you.

The Chamber unites the business community, creating a unique central agency working to improve business, build relationships, and a better community.

Primarily, the Chamber’s role is to serve, represent and be the leading advocate for business in Calvert County. We work closely with elected officials at all levels of government, economic development & tourism to help the business community find the resources to survive, prosper and grow.

How Much Does It Cost?

Membership investments are considered a business expense. The investment varies, depending on the size of your business and the category into which a business falls. A small enterprise is not expected to invest the same amount as a large firm.

Also note that Chamber members will receive a return on their investment by participation in Chamber activities and members-only pricing for business benefits.

Calvert County Profile

Calvert County is Maryland’s smallest county in land area with 213 square miles. It is home to more than 92,000 people and has one of the highest standards of living in Maryland. There are more than 5,200 businesses in the county and a labor force of at least 1.8 million resides within a one-hour drive. Major industries include defense contracting, information technology, tourism, administrative services and utilities.

Calvert County is a peninsula, bounded by the Chesapeake Bay on the east and the Patuxent River on the west. Steep cliffs and woods predominate on the bay side while along the Patuxent, rolling fields slip gently down to the river. The county’s many creeks provide refuge for wildlife as well as scenic areas for boating and fishing.

Containing approximately 213 square miles, the county is nine miles wide at it’s widest point, and 35 miles from the Anne Arundel line to Solomons.

Location

Calvert County is located 30 miles southeast of Washington, D.C. The county’s location offers strategic geographic proximity to Baltimore, Annapolis, and the PAX River Naval Air Station in Lexington Park. It is also accessible via major transportation networks including I-95, US 301, Maryland Routes 2, 4, 5, 231 and 235, and the Port of Baltimore.

Utilities Providers

Electricity- Most of Calvert County is serviced by Southern Maryland Electric Co. (SMECO) with the northeastern corner of the county, including the municipalities of North Beach and Chesapeake Beach, served by Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE).

Gas- Natural gas service is available in the central and southern portions of the county. Expansion plans are underway to extend gas to other sections of the county as demand increases.

Water and Sewer- Provided in the major town centers of Prince Frederick, Solomons, Lusby, Chesapeake Beach and North Beach and in Calvert County Industrial Park and the Patuxent Business Park (PBP).

Waste Disposal/Recycling- Calvert County Division of Solid Waste & Recycling.

Highway Access

MD Route 2 connects with U.S. 50/301, and MD Route 4 connects with U.S. 301 and the Capital Beltway (I-495). The Thomas Johnson Bridge over the Patuxent River connects MD Routes 2/4 in the southern part of the County with MD Routes 5/235 in St. Mary’s County.

Nearly 60 local and long-distance trucking establishments are located in Southern Maryland.

The closest rail depot (CSXT) is in adjacent Prince George's County in Upper Marlboro, approximately 30 minutes away.

Public Transportation

Keller Transportation currently operates Maryland Transit Administration commuter bus routes from the Southern Maryland counties of Charles, St. Mary’s and Calvert to Washington, D.C. The commuter service operates Monday through Friday, from the Southern Maryland area to Washington DC in the AM and from Washington DC to the Southern Maryland area in the PM. Hospitals

CalvertHealth is an independent, not-for-profit community health system located in Prince Frederick, Maryland.  Founded in 1919, CalvertHealth has been taking care of Southern Maryland families for more than a century.  In addition to its beautifully modernized private hospital rooms, CalvertHealth offers an intensive care unit, an observation unit, family birth center and a behavioral health unit for adolescents from 13 years of age as well as adults in two separate spaces. Higher Education

College of Southern Maryland (CSM) operates a growing campus in Prince Frederick. CSM offers technical studies, occupational programs and enrichment courses leading to an associate’s degree and has partnerships leading to bachelor’s degrees with regional four-year institutions.

The Calvert County Election Board registers any eligible person who wishes to vote, and is responsible for all registrations for County, State, and National Elections, as well as the registrations for the Municipalities of the County. This office also helps persons seeking elective office with candidate filing and maintains electoral information.

Recreation and Culture

Calvert County is best known for its attractive location on the Chesapeake Bay and Patuxent River. Because of its unique attractions, Calvert County provides excellent recreational opportunities for boating, sailing, charter boat fishing, swimming, crabbing, canoeing and more. An active Arts Council and community based groups support outdoor and theme concerts, theatrical productions, art shows, and crafts and antique festivals throughout the year.

Archaeological/Ecological Attractions

These include: Flag Ponds Nature Park, Calvert Cliffs State Park, Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum, American Chestnut Land Trust, Chesapeake Biological Laboratory Visitor Center, Battle Creek Cypress Swamp and Chesapeake Beach Railway Trail.

Public Schools

Calvert County offers an outstanding public school system, which operates 13 elementary schools, 6 middle schools and 4 high schools. A comprehensive curriculum combining basic subjects, advanced studies and a fundamental understanding of how technology interfaces in both personal and professional lives of students helps prepare them for future success.

As part of the public school system, the Career and Technology Academy in Prince Frederick, serves students throughout the County, providing course work in automotive mechanics, carpentry, data processing, drafting, electronics, food services, health occupations, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics, masonry, printing and graphic arts and cooperative business education.

CALVERT COUNTY HISTORY

Historical overview

Calvert

Eis one of the oldest counties in the United States

stablished in 1654, Calvert County is one of the oldest counties in the United States. Native people lived in Calvert County 9,000 years ago, according to evidence unearthed by archaeologists at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum. Calvert County’s earliest identified settlers were Piscataway Indians. Indian tribes established villages at intervals along the Patuxent River with the largest being at the mouth of Battle Creek. They grew corn and tobacco on rich farmlands that were to prove very attractive to colonists arriving from England in the early 1600’s.

John Smith is reported to be the first Western man to lay eyes on Calvert County’s peninsula, describing it in his journal as he saw it in 1608 during his exploration of the Chesapeake Bay. The first

English settlement in Southern Maryland dates to somewhere between 1637 and 1642, although the county was actually organized in 1654. Established by Cecelius Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, English gentry were the first settlers, followed by Puritans, Huguenots, Quakers and Scots. In 1695, Calvert County was partitioned into St. Mary’s, Charles and Prince George’s, and its boundaries became substantially what they are today.

The original location of the county seat was Calvertown, Calvert Town or Calvert Towne, on the Patuxent. When this proved to be inconvenient the county seat was moved in 1722 by an Act of the Assembly to a tract known as “Williams’ Old Field” which was designated as the site of a new courthouse.

CALVERT COUNTY HISTORY

The town created by this act was named Prince Frederick. The Courthouse was finally completed in 1732.

British troops invaded Calvert County in 1780, during the Revolutionary War. A second invasion took place during the War of 1812, when Calvert County became a battleground, both on land and sea. The battle of Barney’s flotilla at the mouth of St. Leonard’s Creek was an exciting and important point in county history. Recently divers discovered the remains of the famous flotilla at the bottom of the creek where Barney’s men scuttled their barges to keep them from falling into British hands. During this engagement, the county court house and jail were burned.

The main crop in Calvert County was tobacco, a labor-intensive crop that resulted in a reliance on slavery to make it profitable. This made the county very vulnerable to the forces that tore at the nation, resulting in the Civil War. Although Maryland was officially aligned with the North, many countians sympathized with the Confederate cause. A prison camp for captured southerners was

built at the mouth of Battle Creek, near the site of Calvertown.

When slavery was ended, profound changes swept the countryside. Out of necessity, the economy of the county turned away from large plantations dependent on cheap labor and to the livelihood available in the waters. In 1867 Captain Issac Solomon established a commercial fishery in the southernmost part of the county, which became known as Solomon’s Island. A cannery and a fishing fleet combined with boat building to create a bustling economy.

Life in Calvert County continued without much change into the 20th century. The introduction of the automobile made inland travel more attractive, although the lack of good roads made for a rough ride. In 1936, the county had only 15.2 miles of paved roads. Electrification did not come to the county until 1939, when Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative began service in the area. A toll bridge was built across the Patuxent River at Hallowing Point in 1951, connecting Calvert and Charles Counties. A

workboat or ferry was the only direct link with St. Mary’s County from Solomons. As recently as 1972, children in Solomons commuted to school in St. Mary’s County by boat.

The Second World War brought real change to Calvert County. In 1942, Solomons became the training site for Navy and Marine detachments, with the establishment of an Amphibious Training Base at Dowell. The invasion of Normandy was simulated on the lower Cliffs of Calvert. This influx of personnel and dollars brought a new prosperity to the county.

Two other improvements that dramatically affected the county were the construction of MD Rt 4, and the Thomas Johnson Bridge. Md. Rt. 4, a 38 mile-long four-lane highway begun in 1964 and completed in 1987, runs the length of the county and is named after Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein. CONTACTING OFFICIALS

A guide to effective phone calls to elected officials

Although writing an email is a better way to make your views known to legislators, when a vote is scheduled to take place immediately, calling your representative’s office is effective.

Points to keep in mind. Unless you are a personal friend of the legislator, it is not necessary to speak directly with him or her. You can leave a message about your concerns with the legislator’s staff member who handles the particular issue in question.

• Try not to argue. Just express your opinions by stating why you feel the way you do and state what action you want your legislator to take.

• Seek Assurances. Make sure that the message will be transmitted to your legislator and request a response in writing. It is very important when calling a legislator’s office to remember two cardinal rules:

• Be sure to give your full name and address and,

• Keep your call short and to the point.

Writing an email is an excellent way to make your views known to legislators. Here are a few pointers:

Emails are Powerful

Emails have become the primary form of contact for a legislator with the voters in his/her district and, as a result, the main sources for assessing the views of his or her constituency. Your email can and should be part of that input.

When to Email

Generally, write early. Begin to encourage approval or disapproval of a Bill while it is in committee. Try to time the arrival of your letter for mid-week. Mondays and Fridays are heavy mail days and are also the days legislators travel back and forth from home.

Identify Yourself

If you are writing on your own behalf or as a president of an organization or chairman of an association, say so.

Identify your Subject

Somewhere in the first paragraph, state the name of the legislation about which you are writing. Include the Bill Number, if you can. Sometimes several Bills are introduced that deal with the same subject matter.

Keep It Short

Write your email about one issue.

If you are concerned about three issues, write three emails.

Use Facts

Arguments that cannot be substantiated are dismissed. Be sure of your facts, but do not overload the email with them.

Be Reasonable

Don't ask for the impossible. Don't tell a legislator to vote your way "or else." Do be firm, confident, positive, and courteous.

Ask for a Reply

Indicate to your legislator that you would appreciate a reply containing his or her position on the issue. As a constituent, you have a right to know your representative's views.

Follow-Up

Let your legislator know how you feel about his or her vote on a bill, whether you approve or disapprove.

Also on the grounds is the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory, a state-of-the-art archaeological research, conservation and curation facility. The lab also houses a number of major collections acquired through private donation to the Maryland Historical Trust. All of these collections are available for research, education, and exhibit purposes to students, scholars, museum curators, and educators.

Chesapeake Biological Laboratory Visitor Center

The Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) Visitor Center, located on the first floor of the historic Solomons House, offers guests the opportunity to explore exhibits highlighting the health of the Chesapeake Bay, environmental research, and an oyster reef aquarium. Visitors will discover who CBL scientists are, what they are researching, and why it is important.

Flag Ponds Nature Park

Once a pound-net fishing station on the Chesapeake Bay, the park displays a remarkable variety of natural environments from sandy beaches to freshwater ponds and the forested heights of Calvert Cliffs, hiking trails, fossil hunting, observation platforms, wetlands boardwalk, fishing pier, a beach and visitors center with wildlife exhibits. Picnic tables and grills provided. No lifeguards or nettle nets. Swim at your own risk. Limited wheelchair access.

American Chestnut Land Trust

The American Chestnut Land Trust offers free access for hiking 22 miles across a 3,400 acre preserve as well as guided canoe trips on Parkers Creek. Guided nature hikes are offered seasonally led by ACLT Master Naturalists and volunteers. Native people used the area around Parkers Creek for thousands of years before European settlers arrived in the 1600s. Parkers Creek is named for the English settler William Parker, who received a land patent in 1651.

Cove Point Lighthouse

Tour history at the oldest working lighthouse in Maryland. Built in 1828 by John Donahoo, the 40 foot brick tower is surrounded by an iron lantern containing a lens manufactured in Paris in 1897. Buildings at the Cove Point station include a 1901 fog signal building, a brick generator/ fog signal building, keeper’s home and two bedroom cottage. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Calvert Marine Museum

Rich maritime history and diversity of life in the Chesapeake Bay come alive in the only museum on the East Coast that is home to two lighthouses. See skates and rays, models, paintings, woodcarvings, aquariums, fossils and boats. The Maritime History Gallery travels through the history of the Patuxent River and the Chesapeake Bay beginning with the time of contact of the Pawtuxunt Indians and Captain John Smith. Outdoor exhibits include a boat basin, river otter habitat and recreated salt marsh.

Drum Point Lighthouseon grounds of Calvert Marine Museum

Constructed in 1883 at Drum Point to mark the evidence of the Patuxent River, the screwpile cottage-style light is one of only three remaining from 45 that once served the Chesapeake Bay at the beginning of the 20th century. Decommissioned in 1962, the lighthouse has been beautifully restored, complete with furnishings of the early 20th century. Listed on the National Register of Historic places.

Enjoy a one-hour cruise around Solomons Harbor and the Patuxent River aboard the only Coast Guard-licensed loghulled vessel in America. Built in 1899, this National Historic Landmark was later converted from sail to power and served as an oyster buy-boat until 1978. Departs from the Calvert Marine Museum dock, weather permitting.

Bayside History Museum

The mission of the Bayside History Museum is to provide all citizens with an understanding of the role the Chesapeake Bay environment had in shaping the cultures of the bayside communities from Fairhaven to Plum Point from prehistoric times to the present. Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center

Annmarie Garden, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, is located in scenic Solomons on the Chesapeake Bay. The sculpture garden features a walking path that meanders through the forest, past sculptures including works of art on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art. All ages will enjoy a variety of award-winning special events, gallery shows, engaging public art programs, a gift shop, the artLAB (to create) and the beautiful gardens.

Old Wallville School

The facility is the oldest standing one room schoolhouse for African American students in Calvert County and one of few such structures in Maryland.The schoolhouse was built by African Americans in the early 1880s and remained in use until 1934. Interior furnishings reflect its appearance in the 1930s.

One-Room Schoolhouse

Port Republic School No. 7 was built on its present site circa 1868 and opened for children grades 1 through 7. It remained in continuous use until 1932. Authentically preserved, the schoolhouse is filled with memorabilia.

Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum

The museum shares the story of the Chesapeake Beach Railway and amusement park in the early 20th century, including photos and artifacts. The museum building is the only surviving station from the old railway and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Calvert Cliffs State Park

Hike through this 1,460 acre wooded state park to the majestic Calvert Cliffs on the Chesapeake Bay. The massive cliffs, from which the park is named, dominate the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay for roughly 24 miles in Calvert County and were formed 10 to 20 million years ago when all of Southern Maryland was covered by a warm, shallow sea. When the sea receded the cliffs were exposed and began eroding. Today these cliffs reveal the remains of prehistoric species including sharks, whales, rays, and seabirds that were the size of small airplanes. The cliffs contain more than 600 species of fossils. Thirteen miles of marked foot trails are open to the public for hiking. The park is also ideal for picnicking, fishing, and fossil hunting from the beach only.

Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary

Step back in time at Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary. At the northernmost limits in the United States for the natural range of bald cypress trees, this 100-acre nature sanctuary recalls a time some 100,000 years ago when cypress swamps were common over large parts of the region and now-extinct animals like mammoths roamed the landscape.

Today, thanks to The Nature Conservancy which acquired the property in 1957, the Sanctuary’s primeval beauty is a protected home to more familiar wildlife. As you walk on the quarter-mile boardwalk trail, listen to nature’s harmony of calling frogs and songbirds. With quiet patience and sharp eyes you may even catch a glimpse of some of the abundant life supported by this wetland.

On your walk, examine the intricate beauty of seasonal wildflowers or just gaze up at the inspiring 100-foot canopy of cypress trees that can reach an age of over 1,000 years.
