“Waco: The Aftermath” (Showtime — series premiere, April 16)

This new series, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the events at Mt. Carmel that began on Feb. 28, 1993, focuses on the fallout of the Waco, Texas, disaster — the trials of the surviving members of the Branch Davidian sect and the rise of homegrown terrorist Timothy McVeigh. The five-episode series also provides a broader context for the growth of the American militia movement, which foreshadows attacks such as the Oklahoma City bombing and the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Featured stars include Michael Shannon, John Leguizamo and Giovanni Ribisi.

Carol Burnett will mark a big bir thday in a big way

Q: Is it true that the special marking Carol Burnett’s 90th birthday is going to be shown on her actual birthday? – Kim Ferris, Fruita, Colo.

A: It is. April 26th is that date, and NBC will broadcast the two-hour tribute to the comedy icon, which was taped at the star t of March. We spoke with her soon after that, and she told us that she was “gobsmacked” by the event and the turnout of celebrities who wanted to give her their best wishes. She also said that she was pleased that the occasion was a true “show” in per formance terms.

Among the many guests you can expect to see when the result is televised are Julie Andrews (Burnett’s longtime “chum,” as she puts it), Katy Perr y, Cher, Kristin Chenoweth, Bernadette Peters, Billy Por ter, Jane Lynch, Aileen Quinn, Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, designer Bob Mackie, Ellen DeGeneres, Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Lily Tomlin, Marisa Tomei, Sofia Vergara, Steve Carell, Susan Lucci, Tracee Ellis Ross and “Carol Burnett Show” colleague Vicki Lawrence.

A: The “Mar vel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” alum has signed up for a role in “Interior Chinatown,” a Hulu series based on a bestselling novel by Charles Yu, who also ser ves as an executive producer of the project. She’ll play a police detective in the saga of a man and his relation to his family’s decidedly unusual histor y.

Bennet also supplies one of the voices in the for thcoming animated film “The Silk Road Rally,” a racing stor y that includes J.K. Simmons, Sharon Horgan and John Cleese in its vocal cast as well.

CBS’ three ‘FBI’ shows join forces for a night

CBS’ “FBI” teams usually work different cases on Tuesday nights, but a rare crossover event is about to unite the three series.

On April 4, the Dick Wolf-produced crime dramas span continents – and, in two cases, switch time slots – to tell a new story. “FBI: International” leads the night as “FBI’s” Jubal and Nina (played by Jeremy Sisto and recurring guest star Shantel VanSanten) head for Italy to join Forrester (Luke Kleintank) and the “FBI: International” team to seek a missing, Rome-based U.S. businessman. The disappearance may be linked to a potential terror plot in New York, where “FBI’s” Maggie (Missy Peregrym) is prompted to summon Remy of “FBI: Most Wanted” (Dylan McDermott) for help, counting on his background in dealing with global gangs.

“It actually spans (the production of ) four or five episodes over all the different shows, because we can’t all be filming (the crossover story) at the same time,”

Noting that her own “FBI” series is “fast-paced anyway,” Peregrym acknowledges that each of the franchise’s shows has its own tone and style and she adds with a knowing laugh, “Ours is just chaos. We get a script two days before we start filming it, and we just hit the ground running. And we’re all excited when we complete it.”

In terms of the characters from the parent “FBI” drama and their involvement in the crossover, Peregrym reports that the shared story is particularly “Scola-heavy,” referencing the federal agent played by John Boyd. Regular “FBI” viewers will realize that he has more than a casual link to the “FBI: International” hour, since Nina is pregnant with Scola’s child.

Getting to work with regular cast members from the other “FBI” shows is “fun, definitely,” Peregrym attests: “We show up and make the best thing we can. Everyone comes with an idea of their character, and we just roll with it. We all have our processes and insert certain things into the script that might not necessarily be written. So, Dylan will do what he would do on his show on our show.”

Missy Peregr ym is among the stars of a new crossover stor y uniting the three “FBI” shows Tuesday on CBS.

Peregrym is grateful that the crossover comes near the end of the “FBI” season, rather than right after she returned from maternity leave last fall after the birth of her second child. “That would have been very hectic,” she confirms. “I still can’t believe I came back to work three months after having the baby, but she’s doing really well, and we’re kind of getting into the next phase of things.”

Hosted by Chef Alex Guarnaschelli and Tuscan-born Chef Gabriele Bertaccini and shot on-location in Italy, this new competition series brings 10 up-and-coming culinary stars together in a breathtaking Italian villa where they’ll compete against one another as individuals and in teams to prove their mastery of Italian cooking. From real-life nonnas to a head butcher of a three centuries-old family butcher business, they face challenges accompanied by a local experience steeped in tradition.

Memorabilia owners indulge their passion on MeTV’s ‘Collector’s Call’

The collections of pop culture memorabilia get more elaborate and more expensive as MeTV’s “Collector’s Call” returns for its four th season.

Premiering Sunday, April 2, on MeTV, the new round of 26 episodes brings back host Lisa Whelchel to meet the people behind these collections, which this season include an aviation enthusiast with an actual 747, a handheld videogame fan who holds two Guinness Book World records and a sci-fi/horror aficionado whose trove of memorabilia is wor th over $20 million.

It is that man, former child actor turned director/ producer Rich Correll, whose Icons of Darkness exhibit in Hollywood is the subject of the season opener. Among the items in his possession are an actual mechanical T-Rex from “Jurassic Park,” props and

wood memorabilia collector and appraiser Joe Moe, who made a bid on one of Correll’s items. As for Whelchel, she was so impressed she decided to return with members of her own family in tow.

She says almost all the collectors she’s encountered on “Collector’s Call” have one thing in common – a passion that is “tied back to something in their childhood. You know, either a relationship or a memor y of just an affinity toward a character that really meant something to them as a kid and they just want to hold onto that feeling from childhood. And so they collect more and more and more of what the trigger was for that good feeling.”

Adventurers take on the brutal elements 49th State in USA’s ‘Race to Sur vive Alaska’

Alaska is not only the largest by area of the 50 states but also is home to some of the most diverse climates and environments on the planet. And many of them are on display in an adventure competition series coming to USA Network.

In “Race to Survive Alaska,” which premieres Monday, April 3, eight teams of two trek along 100 miles of Alaskan coastline through inhospitable terrain, from swamps and suffocating rainforest to mountain ranges and glaciers, to claim a spot in the finale where they’ll have a chance to win a $500,000 grand prize.

During this time, they’ll have to live on provisions and what food they can forage and catch, be on the lookout for threatening wildlife such as bears and fight off constant physical and mental exhaustion, which can result in infighting between teammates.

And the competitors here are a mix of elite athletes and survival experts, which executive producer Brian Lovett (“Deadliest Catch”) says made for an interesting complement of skills.

“Part explains. you get somebody to survival what leaves and everything to eat or where to forage or to hunt which would then give them an edge because they’re resting and replenishing better than some of the faster teams.

So we’ll see who would gain an edge in this race. ”

Following each of the teams in this series, which was filmed last summer in the state’s southeast, were a camera person and a guide/medic, which not only helped the production team keep track of the locations of all the racers but also advise them on what to do in an inevitable bear encounter

“If (they) did spot a bear,” Lovett says, “they’d know how to react, whether that be with bear spray or knowing when you should or should not do something like that. ... You’re not going to try to scare off that bear; you’re going to leave its area and go around.”
