O

ctober 12, Columbus Day, has always been a special holiday for me. In 1980, we launched our design and architecture business on that day. Each year we celebrated Columbus Day, planning for toward a new horizon. In, October 1993, we set our sails for Europe, where we have been ever since. This year we are having a show of paintings in our new Italian home in Rocca Malatina over the Columbus Day weekend. Cristoforo Colombo, as he is known here, is a lesser character than we think of in the USA. Even so, Italians do know of Christopher Columbus. When I was in Verona last week, I saw a prominent “via Cristoforo Colombo” sign. There are Christopher Columbus streets in Milan, Rome, Bologna and of course Genoa, where he came from. Unlike other European countries in the imperial age of the 15th century, Italy herself had no interest in global exploration. Years before, Marco Polo made his journey, for business purposes while “discovering” the Far East. When the time came, “Cristoforo Colombo” sailed under the Spanish flag on a new route to India. In Genoa last year, we visited Christopher Columbus’s house, which was probably not really his house, but was in the original neighborhood and might represent the architecture of his time. Much of the lore which surrounds Christopher Columbus is apocryphal. In fact, Christopher Columbus’s greatest contribution to the world was his discovery of the trade winds, which allowed for a quicker crossing of the Atlantic. Columbus made several journeys to Hispaniola (now Haiti/Santo Domingo), believing each time he’d arrived in India. It was that other Italian explorer and cartographer, Amerigo Vespucci, who dispelled that myth and lent his name to the Americas.

xplorers of today research new communication technologies, the function of the brain, as well as means to reach the frontiers of outer space. Business interest fuels their coffers, along with some government research.

Columbus has become unpopular, even hated, bearing the responsibility for the fall of the Native American civilization in favor of Western civilization. Little did he know he set the world’s biggest wave of globalization in motion. New plants, bugs, diseases and technologies took over as the native civilization of the Americas toppled. It is impossible to stop progress, or turn back the clock; it is better to celebrate the good that has become.
